Firstly........... a massive WELL DONE on the effort that you have put in this term to complete all units ready for assessment.
Now, for the next two weeks the name of the game is: “Unit 1”
You have worked with great enthusiasm this term. Let‟s keep this going throughout the Academy closure!
During the closure of the Academy you will miss 6 lessons of your course: Tuesday 29th March 2011 P2 Thursday 31st March 2011 P2 Friday 1st April 2011 P3 Tuesday 5th April 2011 P1 & P2 Friday 8th April 2011 P1 As such, this pack has been put together to help you continue with your project „Culture-Africa‟ throughout the closure.
This term, you have been introduced to a new project and given a project brief to read through. Please ensure you have this to hand over the academy closure as you will need it to aid you through the tasks that have been set. Unit 1 2D and 3D visual communication in Art and Design This is your experimental and developmental work in response to the cultural influences. To be able to use mark-making and making skills. Understand how ideas can be communicated using mark-making and making skills. Describe formal elements, materials and techniques when evaluating your own work. Unit 4 Produce an art and design outcome This is your final piece section where you produce final outcome
Be able to use specialist materials, equipment and techniques. Know how to plan and produce a final outcome using specialist working methods and processes.
TASKS: You need to complete the following set tasks in your sketchbook. Include on each page: ● Page background effects ● Large clear titles ● Your own thoughts/ comments/ opinion ● Sourced facts (including URLs‟ and/ or book titles) ● Annotations
1. 2. 3. 4.
T1: Mask Designs T2: Print Making T3: Mask Making T4: Evaluation of Final Outcome
T1: Mask Designs
Unit 1 - Understand how ideas can be communicated using mark-making and making skills. Unit 2 - Know how to plan and produce a final outcome using specialist working methods and processes.
Task 1 is in response to the two Unit statements above. In your journal you need to create 4 mask designs which can inspire and influence your final outcome.
Separate your A3 page into 4 sections Add a title called “Mask Design Ideas” Use a different shape as the outline for each mask, refer back to your visual research homework for ideas Decorate each mask using a variety of patterns sourced also from your visual research Add colour to your Designs with coloured pencil or watercolour Finish by adding annotation
“An annotation is notes that you make to yourself about your work. Creating these comments, usually a few sentences long, tells the person marking your book what you have done and how you have done it.”
What you have done? (talk about your designs for your final outcome) Why have you done it? (in response to your brief) What materials did you use? (or what materials will you use on your mask) What worked well? (e.g., design idea 1 is my strongest design…….and explain why?) What could be improved and how? Now you have done this task/Art work what will you do next to develop your work? (next explain how you will begin to make your mask papier-mâché and one of these designs will be used to add decoration)
T2: Print Making
Unit 1- Describe formal elements, materials and techniques when evaluating your own work. Unit 2 - Be able to use specialist materials, equipment and techniques. Know how to plan and produce a final outcome using specialist working methods and processes.
Task 2 is in response to the three Unit statements above. In your journal you need to document on a double A3 page the process of your “Print Making”. Note the key words “Describe formal elements, materials and techniques” This task below may help you gain an understanding of the process. Put these sentences into the correct order and draw some thumbnail sketches to go with them. 1. Press the tile onto the paper 2. Roll the ink using a roller 3. Use a clean roller to apply more pressure to the back of the tile 4. When the ink makes a ripping noise it is ready to roll on to the tile 5. Put work on the drying rack 6. Draw image onto polystyrene tile, using a sharp pencil or biro 7. Squeeze a small amount of ink on to a flat surface like a tile 8. Roll ink on to the tile ensuring you get it evenly covered 9. Wash and dry your tile and experiment with new colours 10 .Lay newspaper out and put aprons on 11. Lift the tile off of the paper
Add a title called “Poly Block Printing” You need to start by explaining how the „printing‟ links with the project brief. State how your final mixed media artwork is going to consist of a African Print combined with a 3D mask. With the print acting as a background and framework for your mask. Talk about your print designs and what influenced them. Why you chose that particular design for your print etc. You then need to talk about the process of making your Print. How you drew onto polystyrene creating a variety of marks to create an African inspired print. Then to finish off you need to explain the printing process. Remember to use the correct terminology and techniques. You may end with talking about whether or not you enjoyed the process and whether it was successful and effective.
You may also wish to „Google‟ the technique Poly Block Printing to aid you with this task.
T3: Mask Making
Unit 1- Describe formal elements, materials and techniques when evaluating your own work. Unit 2 - Be able to use specialist materials, equipment and techniques. Know how to plan and produce a final outcome using specialist working methods and processes.
Task 3 is in response to the three Unit statements above. In your journal you need to document on a double A3 page the process of your “Mask Making”.
Add a title called “Mask Making” You need to start by explaining how the „mask‟ links with the project brief. State how your final mixed media artwork is going to consist of an African Print combined with a 3D mask. Talk about your mask designs and what influenced them. Why you chose that particular design to decorate your mask etc. You then need to talk about the process of making your Mask. You used a mask template and covered it in cling film to protect the mask. You then used the process of Papier-mâché etc……… Then to finish off you need to explain the decoration process. What materials you used, effects such as stipple, or the ear buds to add texture. Remember to use the correct terminology and techniques. You may end with talking about whether or not you enjoyed the process and whether your mask was successful and effective.
You may also wish to „Google‟ the technique Papier-mâché to aid you with this task.
T4: Evaluation of your final outcome.
Why do we evaluate our work? An Evaluation should be completed at the end of an assignment. You carry out evaluations to reflect on the work you have produce and identify what you have successfully achieved and where you can make improvements. Evaluations are important to your progress, as they help you set targets to work towards in future assignments/Art outcomes. When evaluating your work try to answer the following questions: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.
What have I done in the Assignment? Have I met the requirements of the brief and how? What did I enjoy in the assignment? How did my sketchbook/developmental work help me produce my final outcome? What is successful about my final outcome? What improvements could I make to my final outcomes? If I started this assignment again what would I do differently? In future projects I plan to focus on the following targets to improve my work: a)……………………………………………………………………………………… b)……………………………………………………………………………………… c)………………………………………………………………………………………
Your Evaluation should be presented across a double page. Again add a title and be creative Use the questions above to guide you through this task. When talking about your final outcome, don‟t forget to state the process of how you put your print and mask together to create your mixed media artwork. Talk about how you stitched your prints together to create a collage which then acted as the frame for your mask. How did you attach your mask to your framework? (Stitch) What further detail did you add to your mask in response to your research? (Threads, Raffia, Feathers etc.
