AS TEXTILES A1: ASSIGNMENT BRIEF

A1: Response to Surface/Texture (Term 1-2) This first assignment will start off your exploration into the given theme. Throughout the assignment you will produce a variety of development/experimentation work that will lead to your own response to your chosen area of enquiry. Remember your outcome can take its shape and form in the sense of a wall hanging, image transfer, textile sculpture, stitched painting, cushion or garment. There is no limit on scale or media; cross boundaries with your materials and techniques. Remember this is ART TEXTILES! Throughout term 1-2 you will be expected to produce the following in terms of quantity of work. However, this will vary from pupil to pupil:  Full A3 sketchbook with evidence of: 1. First and second hand observational drawing 2. Experimentation in a wide range of media including machine embroidery, fabric manipulation, print, embellishment, painting, collage and photography 3. Strong links visually/written to the work of other artists, craftsperson’s and photographer, demonstrating competent analytical skills 4. Evidence of planning and recording of your idea/thoughts

 A final outcome or sustained piece of work in response to the given theme. The time spent on your final piece could be anything from 10 to 20 hours.

AS TEXTILES A1: ASSIGNMENT BRIEF Sketchbook Pages: Your sketchbook is a creative document that contains both written and visual material. It accompanies the

main coursework project and should include items such as: drawings, paintings, media trials, photographs (Note: photographs taken should be clearly labelled, so examiners know the work is yours and reward you for it; those sourced elsewhere should be referenced or acknowledged as second-hand imagery); and references to the work of others. It is a place for exploring, planning, drafting and developing ideas – for testing, practising, evaluating and discussing.

Some guidance to your pages:

 Every page should have a background, painted, dyed, printed  Every page should have a title  Every page should contain an element of drawing/sourced imagery  Every page should be annotated Remember not every drawing/sample you do needs to be a finished work of art. You can use your book for rough notes, thumbnails and quick ideas too.

AS TEXTILES A1: ASSIGNMENT BRIEF Supported studies: You can support your exploration of your theme in a variety of ways.  Lively and experimental observational drawings Draw with a variety of media in and outside of your sketchbook, the more the better. Play with composition, space and your use of colour. Gain inspiration form the work of others and the techniques that they use.

Materials: Pencil, charcoal, oil pastel, paint, watercolour, ink, chalk. Use different materials to create marks/textures; feathers, sticks, fabric, card etc. Your drawings can take the form of textures; can be very abstract or very detailed.  Photographs of inspiration This could be from still life, the outside environment or anything that inspires you and is relation to your chosen direction. Talk about your photographs, manipulate them using Photoshop, bleach them, draw over them, scratch into them, collage on top of them, photocopy them and play with the scale.

AS TEXTILES A1: ASSIGNMENT BRIEF  Experimentation with materials Respond to the work of other artists, your own observation drawings and imagery through the use of textiles. Draw with the sewing machines, sew into your books. Experiment with a wide range of techniques such as embellishment, print, batik, weaving, fabric manipulation, dye techniques, resist techniques, photo manipulation, and image transfer.

 Communication The key skill of communication is integral to the study of AS Art Textiles and will be assessed as specified in the mark scheme.

This involves, amongst other skills, the ability to: 1. Summarise the information found in many different types of sources – e.g. books, galleries, internet, journals 2. Use accurate and relevant information in the best format for the piece of work you are doing 3. Make sure that written work is legible and that its meaning is clear 4. Choose suitable images to illustrate your ideas clearly

In order for you to gain the maximum marks for your coursework it is important to meet the criteria set by the examining board.
