A8: Artists Impression Introduction: ●
Your challenge for this assignment is to paint an ‘artists impression’ of your planned sculpture depicting it in/at a location of your own choice.
●
The painting you create will support your current sculpture coursework and will form part of your overall assessment.
●
This assignment is a ‘summer project’ meaning that you are expected to work on this painting throughout your summer break, and return in September with your finished painting.
●
Below are some examples of ‘Artists Impressions’ for sculptures to help you begin your own assignment.

Task List: There are many ways to begin this assignment, below are some examples of possible ways that you could take your work forward: 1. Begin in your sketchbook with a clear ‘title-page’ called - ‘A8: Artists Impression’ 2. Then start by mind-mapping possible location for your sculpture that you feel may be relevant. Use a well known online mind-mapping tool www.bubbl.us to help you with your presentation. Create your mindmap and then print out a copy for your sketchbook. Or if you feel confident design/create your own mindmap from scratch. Whichever way you decide to complete this task, you should include/suggest a range (5-6) alternative/possible locations for your sculpture to be depicted in/at. 3. Next source/find examples of the possible locations that you included in/on your mindmap. Present these into your sketchbook and include comments that explain why they are relevant to your sculpture (why did you choose them?). Select your favourite image/location and present this seperately on a new page leaving some space for you to draw/sketch/recreate the image using whatever medium (pencil/ paint/colouring pencil etc) that you wish. The key here is for you to re-create your chosen location/picture demonstrating that you can work from observation. Below is an example how your page may/should/could look:

4. Your next development task (in your sketchbook) should help illustrate (visualise) your sculpture within your chosen location. This can be achieved using a few methods, for higher marks consider doing examples for each suggestion/method (below).

Method 1 (above)- Working directly on top of your chosen location/image. Print out your chosen location/image large enough to fill a new page in your sketchbook. Using pencil draw/sketch your sculpture directly on top of your image/location. Develop your sketch into a more refined drawing by improving the quality of your line. Use a range of tones to create a 3D effect and add other effects such as shadows.

Method 3 (above)- Using computer software (such as Photoshop, or an online equivalent such as http://pixlr.com. Import your chosen location/ image into the program and then take a photograph of your sculpture (one of your previous development studies, or produce a new study/drawing of

A8: Artists Impression your sculpture for this task). Import the photograph of your sculpture into the program as a new layer so that it sits on top of your location image. Then remove the background of your sculpture picture so that your location picture comes through behind. This is an excellent method for you to use to illustrate your sculpture that demonstrates a range of possible scale/sizes and positions/compositions 5. Once you have completed the previous tasks (above), you should be confident and ready to begin work on your main painting. Using the canvas provided (if you loose it, get another from the Range or similar art suppliers, this would also be the perfect place to obtain your own set of acrylic paints and brushes etc. 6. As with any painting, you should begin your work by ‘lightly’ sketching out the outline for your work. Don’t worry if you make an error as when you apply the paint you should find that this will cover-up your pencil line anyway, however do not press down too heavily with your pencil as this may damage the canvas, and if your line is too heavy/strong then this may be more difficult to cover-up when you apply the paint. 7. After you have sketched out yout work, refine your line with much more control, the neater your line the easier it will be for your painting as you will have a clearer/ neater line in which to apply your paint inside or around. 8. When you are ready to begin the application of paint, work from the background towards the foreground in layers. For example, do not paint your sculpture first (this should be the last thing you apply paint to/on), instead paint your chosen location, and if it includes a scene which is outdoors, the part furthest in the distance is likely to be the sky, so paint that first. 9. When painting try to mix/make and use a range of ‘tones’. The general rule here is to paint from dark to light by mixing and blending your tones while your paint is still wet. If you need to take a break, be sure to finish the section of your work in full to prevent difficulties (for example making the same tone/colour) later on. 10. Be sure to include features in your final painting to help give your sculpture a sense of scale/size. For example the inclusion of a figure placed somewhere local to your sculpture will give a dramatic effect. Notice how in the example below I have included a girl sitting down, looking up towards the sculpture.

A8: Artists Impression Guidance: ●
Explore a couple of possible themes (initially).
●
Consider combining two themes/ideas together.
●
Your final outcome should be a large ((A1 Size) canvas painting using acryilc paints.
●
Discuss your ideas with friends, family and teachers.
●
Begin your work early enough in the summer to allow sufficient time to conduct all work required (sketchbook and final outcome).
●
Plan your work, decide early on when you will work on this assignment and stick to your plan/schedule.
●
Take regular breaks, for example working for an hour at a time should be plenty.
●
Set-up your canvas in a secure space/place so tha tit does not get damaged, but also somewhere that you can see it frequently so that you dont forget about it. Having your work (in progress) will provide you with opportunity for reflection on what you have doen so far, and may help you make key decisions about how you will develop your work next.
