A2: Contextual Investigation

What are the ‘Origins’ and ‘Purpose’ of Human Form in works of art, and how do contemporary artists follow these ‘origins’ and ‘purposes’? - Produce a written assignment that explains the ‘Origins’ and ‘Purpose’ of human form as subject matter by artists throughout history.


A2: Contextual Investigation

Guidance: ● ●

SIZE: 1000(min) to 3000(max) words. STRUCTURE: Must include an introduction, main body of text, critique, opinion, facts and examples of work. A title page, list of contents, glossary, bibliography and conclusion are also required. ● RELEVANCE: The core subject must include strong reference/ links and connections to an Artist, or Artists that used ‘Human From’ as subject matter for their work. ● PRESENTATION: This assignment must be typed using a word processor, and printed out on A4 paper, collated and stapled. Colour copies (for images) is not essential, but, desirable. Your full name, class name, student ID and date must be included on all pages. ● TIME: When you receive the deadline for this assignment, ensure that you submit your work on/in time.


A2: Contextual Investigation Support/ suggestions: Research - Explore and discover artist throughout time/ history that used the theme of Human Form within their own work. Go to a library, visit galleries, museums, use the WWW. Be specific - Choose ONE artist to focus your work on during the initial writing. Provide facts, opinion and critique (yours and others) about the artist and their work. Make connections - Using your chosen artist and their work as the starting point, provide links and connections to other artists that worked in a similar way, or used similar subject matter for their work. Explain your links/ connections. What do the artists have in common? What do they do that is the same/ similar? What are the differences? Why did the artists use the ‘Human Form’ in their work? What were/ are they trying to say? Any/ all references used/ sourced from websites/ books etc must be referenced, or ideally hyperlinked back to the original sources. Include examples of artwork - Try to use examples of artwork created by the artists that use for you assignment. Explain these works of art, critique them using your own opinion and, the opinion of others. Provide arguments for, and against meanings/ reasons for the artwork. Explain how the artwork was made. What materials were used? Why did the artist(s) use the materials they did? How big/ small is/was the work? Where can this work be seen in person (RL) and/ or via the web. All images used must include a reference to where they were sourced. If you find images using a search engine, you must include the actual website of the work, not the search engine name/ search url. Conclude your work/ assignment - Include a conclusion that ‘wraps-up’ your work and brings everything together. As a general guide your conclusion should be approximately 1qtr of the entire of the assignment. Make references back to your main body of text, artists that you wrote about, examples of work that you included. Try to include/ explain or reinforce the original question: What are the ‘Origins’ and ‘Purpose’ of Human Form in works of art, and how do contemporary artists follow these ‘origins’ and ‘purposes’?


Glossary - For this section of your work, try to include as many ‘keywords’ or ‘unique’ words in the form of a list, including your understanding/ knowledge of these words. Bibliography - For this section of your work, list all/ any sources. Images, text, opinions, facts and quotes. You need to explain where you obtained your information from.
