A4: Bentwood Box OVERVIEW: AIMS: ● The aim of the project is to allow students to learn about a culture from another part of the world: The North West Native American Indians (NWNAI). ● During this assignment you will investigate and learn about the NWNAI culture and specifically, learn about a traditional object use by the NWNAI called: The Bentwood Box. DEVELOPMENT: ● After a series of learning activities learning about the NWNAI culture, you are to design and build/make your very own ‘Bentwood Box’. ● Creatures play a large part of the NWNAI culture and the associated stories that go along with these creatures will help form the inspiration for your own design. ● After designing your Bentwood Box, you are then tasked in making a model based on your design. OUTCOME(s): Throughout the project the skills learnt and developed will help you create your 'Final Outcome' for this assignment, which is: ● A4: Bentwood Box model.


A4: Bentwood Box Prior to starting this assignment you should have completed previous tasks and work which are:

1. Knowledge and understanding about the NWNAI 2. Identification of creatures and animals used within NWNAI story telling. 3. Consideration and understanding about typical colours used by the NWNAI within their artefact's.

TASK 1: Choose 1 of the creatures (following pages) to use for the design of your own Bentwood Box. TASK 2: Copy/draw your chosen creature as accurately as possible into your sketchbook (aim to enlarge your creature to fill the page). TASK 3: Colour your creature drawing using paints or colouring pencils TASK 4: Along-side, near your picture write the meaning associated with your creature ‘neatly’ and ‘clearly’.

Sketching out: Start your work by 'lightly' sketching the outline of your chosen creature. Look carefully at the ‘design’ of your creature and aim to map-out your planned work as carefully as possible. ●

When sketching, do not press too hard with your pencil.

When all of your work is mapped-out, you are ready for the next stage/step.

Drawing: Ensure your pencil is 'SHARP'. Keep your pencil sharp throughout this step, and sharpen it often. Your line should be strong and thin, if your pencil becomes blunt, your line will suffer. Directly on top of your previous sketchy line, draw a neat accurate line. To do this keep your pencil in contact with the surface of the paper, turn the point of your pencil occasionally to ensure that you are always drawing with the sharpest edge of the pencil tip/ point. Drawing should be one continuous movement/ action. Refine: With your newly added pencil line on top of your sketch, it is time to refine your work further by using a clean rubber/ eraser. Remove your previous sketchy line using the clean rubber, if you have followed the previous steps, then your sketchy line should vanish leaving behind your stronger, neater line. Before you begin the next step, ensure that your accurate line is not too heavy, as you don't want it to come through the paint. Painting: ● Consider using the painting skills learnt during the previous project (Advanced Colour Theory): ○ Priming the page/ surface area ○ Working from light to dark ○ Loading your brush with a strong amount of pigment/ paint. ○ Keeping your brush strokes in the same direction ○ Turning your work around so that you can accurately paint towards the edge of your outline ●

Paint the lightest colours first, and work with one colour at a time. For example identify all the areas of your work that will painted with Yellow, and paint all of these places first, at the same time. Repeat the painting process until you have applied all required colour(s).

You may need to then return to each of the coloured sections of your work and paint a further coat/ application so that the strength of the colours is strong and bold. Painting multiple layers of paint can also help hide any messy brushwork.

A4: Bentwood Box ready to paint the bold, black lines on your work. Do this very carefully, take your time, and if needed practice on a spare piece of paper before you attempt to this directly on your work.

Follow the same principles as above, keeping your brush in constant contact with your paper/ surface.

TASK 5: Plan your ‘Design’ in your sketchbook. Using the template (found late in this document), accurately draw the ‘net’ or ‘plan’ for your Bentwood Box. Be sure to measure accurately. This will be your ‘prep’ or ‘practice’ prior to making your final Bentwood Box model. So be sure take your time and be careful. Identify any errors and/or mistakes during this ‘prep’ to prevent you making mistakes during your actual model.

Above is a ‘net’ or ‘plan’ for your Bentwood Box. Accurately draw this net into your sketchbook using a full page. Draw your previously chosen creature onto TWO of the main panels. On the next page(s) are some typical examples of ‘Ovoids’ used in NWNAI art and culture. Chose 3 of these ‘Ovoids’ to use for decoration on the ends and top of your box.

A4: Bentwood Box TASK 6: Building your Bentwood Box - After you have completed your ‘prep’ inside your sketchbook. To build your final Bentwood Box, work directly from your sketchbook ‘prep’ task on a plain sheet of A4 (size) drawing paper. Repeat the same steps/ procedure as you did for your ‘prep’ work on the sheet of paper: Sketch > Draw > Refine > Paint Then cut-out your box and ‘fashion’ it together by folding along the fold lines and gluing the tabs to hold the shape of the box. TASK 7: If possible take a photograph of your finished Bentwood Box (perhaps use your mobile phone, if you have one with a camera, or ask your teacher to help).
