he Iberian Peninsula, inhabited for thousands of years, was known as Iberia among the Greeks, as Hispanic among the Romans and as Sefarad among the Jews. The westernmost area of the Peninsula was soon called Extremadura in Spanish (meaning “the furthermost region”). This exclusive location provided Extremadura with a unique position as a legendary land where different worlds met and traditions and visions were freely shared. This is why Extremadura gives us an unprecedented view into our roots amid ancestral history, unaltered nature, traditional gastronomy and widely acclaimed cultural heritage. Tradition and modernity meet in Extremadura. A comtemporary, 21st century society looks into a global cross-cultural future while preserving its past and myths.

a Península Ibérica, habitada desde hace miles de años, era conocida como Iberia entre los griegos, como Hispania entre los romanos y, como Sefarad entre los judios . La zona más occidental de la península de pronto fue llamada Extremadura en español (que significa “la región más lejana”). Esta ubicación exclusiva proporciona a Extremadura una posición única como una tierra mítica donde los diferentes mundos se encontraron y tradiciones y visiones se comparten libremente. randson of the Kings who made possible the discovery of the New Continent, the future European Emperor was born in Gent, Flanders, and grew up into a cosmopolitan man whose thought encompassed the whole of Europe while simultaneously looking toward America. King Charles V provided ships to Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan to perform the first circumnavigation of the Earth. Under his reign, Extremadura-born explorers Hernán Cortés and Francisco Pizarro incorporated large areas of Central and South America into the Spanish crown, and the inclusion of the Philippines contributed to the popular conception that “the Sun never set in Spain”. Following a road through the La Vera area in Extremadura, Charles retired in the monastery of Yuste, located in the middle of a breathtaking mountain landscape. Extremadura´s Yuste is now a National Heritage Site and Charles V represents the very roots of a united multinational Europe.

El rey Carlos V proporcionó barcos al explorador portugués Fernando de Magallanes para realizar la primera circunnavegación a la Tierra. Bajo su reinado, los exploradores nacidos en Extremadura Hernán Cortés y Francisco Pizarro incorporan grandes zonas de América Central y del Sur en la corona española, y la inclusión de las Filipinas contribuyeron a la concepción popular de que “el sol nunca se ponía en España”. Siguiendo un camino a través de la zona de La Vera en Extremadura, Carlos V se retiró en el monasterio de Yuste, situado en medio de un paisaje de montaña impresionante. Yuste es ahora patrimonio nacional y Carlos V representa las raíces de una Europa multinacional unida.

xtremadura have a reputation for being entrepreneurs, travellers, and courageous and hard-working people. This can be traced back to the times where many of them headed for a better life in the New World. Many of the first settlers of America came from Extremadura. Hernán Cortés was indeed born in the town of Medellín in Extremadura, to a noble but not particularly rich family, and exchanged a promising life as a lawyer for an adventurous ship journey to the newly discovered American continent when he was only 18 years old. A distant cousin, Francisco Pizarro, was born in Trujillo, not far away from Cortés´ hometown, and grew up illiterate. He also sailed towards America and joined another Extremadura-born explorer,Vasco Núñez de Balboa, from Jerez de los Caballeros, in an expedition that led them to be the first Europeans to have reached the Pacific from the New World.

xtremadura tiene una reputación de empresarios, viajeros y gente valiente y trabajadora. Esto se remonta a los tiempos donde muchos de ellos se dirigieron hacia una vida mejor en el nuevo mundo. Muchos de los primeros pobladores de América vinieron de Extremadura. Hernán Cortés de hecho nació en la ciudad de Medellín en Extremadura, en una familia noble, pero no particularmente rica y cambió una vida prometedora como abogado por un viaje de aventura en una nave al recién descubierto continente americano cuando tenía sólo 18 años de edad. Un primo lejano, Francisco Pizarro, nació en Trujillo, no muy lejos del pueblo natal de Cortés y creció analfabeto. También navegó hacia América y se unió a otro explorador nacido en Extremadura, Vasco Núñez de Balboa, de Jerez de los Caballeros, en una expedición que los llevó a ser los primeros europeos en haber alcanzado el Pacífico desde nuevo mundo.

La cultura romana nos dejo restos milenarios Born as Gaius Octavius, the founder of the Roman Empire and its first Emperor soon conquered the Iberian Peninsula (Hispania) and most of the regions around the Mediterranean Sea (Mare Nostrum). With August, the Roman culture also reached the Atlantic Ocean. Despite being a divinized Emperor, Augustus wished to embody the spirit of the Republican virtue and norms, and he also wanted to connect with the concerns of the common people. Under Augustus, Rome assimilated many of the cultural manifestations of the conquered areas. Many roman cities and colonies established during and after his reign were named after him, including the Lusitania´s capital city Colonia Augusta Emerita, now Extremadura´s regional capital Mérida. Mild weather and rich soil, among other reasons, led Emperor Augustus to chose Extremadura when he decided to establish a new city for veteran Roman soldiers to settle down during their well-deserved retirement, after decades of service in the Roman legions.
Nacido como Cayo Octavio, el fundador del Imperio Romano y su primer Emperador pronto conquistaron la Península Ibérica (Hispania) y la mayoría de las regiones en torno al Mar Mediterráneo (Mare Nostrum). Con Augusto, la cultura romana también alcanzó el Océano Atlántico. A pesar de ser un emperador divinizado, Augusto quiso encarnar el espíritu de la virtud republicana y las normas, y también quería conectar con las preocupaciones de la gente común. Bajo el mandato de Augusto, Roma asimiló muchas de las manifestaciones culturales de las regiones conquistadas.

Muchas ciudades romanas, las colonias establecidas durante y después de su reinado fueron nombradas después de él, entre ellas la capital de Lusitania, la ciudad Colonia Augusta Emerita, ahora Mérida es la capital regional de Extremadura. Clima templado y suelo rico, entre otras razones, condujeron el emperador Augusto a eligir Extremadura cuando se decidió establecer una nueva ciudad para soldados romanos veteranos donde instalarse durante su buena merecida jubilación tras décadas de servicio en las legiones romanas.
