E17 Art Trail 30 May – 14 June 2015 The Inside Story, brought to you by Walthamstow’s artists in open houses, studios, galleries, streets and local businesses.
Thank you Once again the E17 Art Trail is celebrating the creativity that grows and thrives in our borough. We are proud to be part of the rich tapestry of inspiration and originality that inspires us year on year and we feel lucky to be able to draw together the creative threads as Walthamstow opens its storytelling heart. An enormous thank you to all of the participants, venues and partners who support and enable our talented community to display its inventiveness.
Funders Message Waltham Forest Council is pleased to be supporting the E17 Art Trail 2015, which promises to be another great success. The art trail is recognised in Waltham Forest and beyond as making a significant contribution to local arts and culture, and improving the quality of lives of its residents. It showcases and celebrates the talent, creativity, diversity, ambition, and hospitality of so many of our residents, creating a sense of pride for local people and attracting visitors to the borough. In the spirit of William Morris, the E17 Art Trail is all about creative participation of residents, which reflects Waltham Forest’s aspirations for ‘Art for All’. Cllr Chris Robbins Leader of the Council and Portfolio Lead Member for Culture. www.walthamforest.gov.uk

The inside story The theme of this year’s E17 Art Trail is Storytelling. Everything, whether visual, readable or edible comes with its own intrinsic history and story and this year’s offering is bringing that idea to the forefront. The storyteller is deeply embedded in our culture and in our own lives, it represents the best of our creativity, our triumphs and the ability to transcend adversity to rise phoenix-like. Storytelling is an open-ended theme that can describe the development of an artist’s practice as well as their approach to working and subject matter. It’s about sharing the stories of where we live and responses to the world around us. Exploring the trail you’ll get the inside story direct from artists opening their houses and studios, and discover the background to local creative businesses and workshops hosting special events. Alongside the diverse range of visual arts exhibitions you will find storytelling on your way home from work or school, local histories revealed, artist and maker demonstrations, reminiscence projects, and invitations to make your own creations and memories. There is both an intimacy and an inclusivity in the world of storytelling and one which this year will transform Walthamstow into literally hundreds of tales. This is the trail of the tale. Enjoy!

Schools & Students The E17 Art Trail is a rich resource for teachers and learners. For 16 days the creative purpose of Walthamstow’s many hidden artists’ studios become visible. Artists invite people into their work places to reveal their creative practice and techniques, their works in progress, sketchbooks, maquettes and samples, and finished pieces. This can be an inspiring opportunity for students of all ages. Rarely can a gallery visit give this insight into the creative process. Artists of all disciplines welcome visitors to discuss their work and influences and to demonstrate their methods. Use this Trail Guide to find artists’ studios in your school’s neighbourhood. Contact the E17 Art Trail team if you would like help in arranging a class visit. Exhibitions at George Monoux College and Vestry House Museum have extended opening times for school groups by appointment. Other artists may be able to accommodate this on request. Tell us what got your learners talking and creating as a result of your visit. Whether it’s via facebook, twitter, email or a postcard, we’d love to hear. Budding critics are encouraged to submit their reviews for publication on the E17 Art Trail blog. Meanwhile, encourage students to see how their peers have prepared for the E17 Art Trail on the E17 Art Trail Schoolyard blog. In 2014 the E17 Art Trail was the proud recipient of Kelmscott School’s Community Award recognising the collective contribution all art trail participants have made in championing local talent. Each year we adapt our resources to support schools and learners to benefit from the rich offer of the trail programme. Help us devise future initiatives with your suggestions and insights. We hope the E17 Art Trail influences and excites the ambitions of our young artists. www.e17arttrailschoolyard.blogspot.co.uk

Can you help finance the next chapter? The Story Pavilion: E17 Art Trail’s extended programme We’re planning a new destination at Artillery Island for the Walthamstow Garden Party: the Story Pavilion. The Story Pavilion brings Walthamstow’s stories to Beyond Barbican’s international festival. Talented and acclaimed local performers, writers, and artists welcome audiences to escape into new narratives and compelling legends. Walthamstow’s storytellers look forward to touring to neighbourhood sites to extend the reach of the E17 Art Trail programme over the summer months. In keeping with the E17 Art Trail’s open access ethos, the Story Pavilion will be free at the point of use. You can support this venture through crowdfunder, just choose your role: Donate £100 to be an E17 Art Trail Champion and receive an A3 limited edition print of Linda Hughes cover art. Donate £30 to be an E17 Art Trail Friend and receive an E17 Art Trail 2015 tote bag. Donate £10 to be an E17 Art Trail Ally. www.crowdfunder.co.uk/the-story-pavilion
Cover artist profile Linda Hughes studied illustration at Edinburgh College of Art, and animation at the Royal College in London. She has worked as an illustrator, animator and art lecturer. She has enjoyed living here since 1998, creating a series of prints and drawings about Walthamstow. She recently completed an animated film for the Poetry Society, and is working on a hand-drawn film about the fairground coming to Kirkcaldy, Fife where she grew up.
Our story continues… …at the Walthamstow Garden Party. The E17 Art Trail story is not confined to the festival dates. The preparations, anticipation and memories continue throughout the year, so this year we are extending our public programme. Escape to Artillery Island to feast on more storytelling and local produce during the Walthamstow Garden Party 18 –19 July in Lloyd Park.
