Thank you An enormous thank you to all the artists, participants, festival partners and audience who support and enable our talented community. An incredible 7,000 people are making work and performing in the E17 Art Trail. An astounding 2,500 people are volunteering their time to organise and host all 300 invitations in this year’s programme. We could never have imagined this level of participation when we began 12 years ago. We wish you every success in your individual and collective creative ambitions for 2017.
Messages from our funder Waltham Forest Council is delighted to be supporting the E17 Art Trail again in 2017. The E17 Art Trail is recognised in the borough and beyond as making a significant contribution to local arts and culture, and improving the quality of lives of Waltham Forest residents. It showcases and celebrates the amazing talent, creativity, diversity, ambition, and hospitality of so many of our residents, creating a sense of pride for local people and attracting new visitors to the borough. In the spirit of William Morris, the E17 Art Trail is all about creative participation for residents, which reflects Waltham Forest’s aspirations for ‘Art for All’.

In memory of Helen Alveranga There are some artists who have supported the E17 Art Trail since its inaugural year in 2005. As we go to print we’ve learned that painter Helen Alveranga has passed away. Helen’s hyperreal representations of the natural world have captivated us year on year and have gained recognition with awards including SAA Best Professional Artist of the Year 2016. Her family are determined to share her work on the art trail again this year. Please check our website for details. We will always remember Helen’s talent and generous welcome. Our thoughts are with her family and friends. 2

WelCoMe To a WalThaMsToW PhenoMenon Over 7,000 arti sts, residents and workplaces in Walthamstow are inviti ng you to enjoy every element of the E17 Art Trail 2017. Infused with our STEAM theme, painters, sculptors, poets, choirs, photographers, designers, ceramicists, and dancers welcome you to enjoy exhibiti ons, performances and workshops in the studios and streets, parks and pubs, cafes and shopping centres, faith spaces and community places. STEAM is the acronym acknowledging the infl uence of creati ve disciplines in STEM subjects: Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths.
“I was indulging my own interests in choosing the STEAM theme this year, but was delighted to fi nd that it resonates with so many people who have enjoyed responding to it.” Laura Kerry, Creati ve Director, E17 Art Trail. Across Walthamstow, arti sts, makers and neighbours have been conducti ng their own experiments, tests and research as they prepare their exhibits and events. Local residents are applying their creati vity in exploring phenomenons in zoology, physics, chemistry, ecology, geometry, analog and digital technology. Whilst debates rage nati onally about the value of investi ng in the creati ve arts in educati on, 23 local schools, colleges and nurseries have determinedly found ti me and resources to share the incredible creati ve work of their young arti sts in the festi val. Our STEAM theme has proved a ferti le opportunity for Arti llery to begin to foster links with researchers in nearby universiti es, new relati onships that we hope may inform future collaborati ons in our neighbourhood. Parti cipati on in the E17 Art Trail has grown to truly epic proporti ons whilst the festi val conti nues to operate on a modest budget combining funds gratefully received from our local authority, local sponsors and registrati on fees. As we go to print, we calculate 1 in 15 local residents are creati vely contributi ng to the programme, and we expect this to rise! So we are hugely grateful to the incredibly talented local volunteers who have shared their ti me, energy and specialist skills to help make sure that this phenomenal programme is enjoyed fully by visitors. For digital navigati on, try StoryMap; or augment your exhibiti on visits with online footage of E17 Art Trail arti sts at work via our YouTube channel, connect to both via www.e17artt rail.co.uk. This phenomenon can only be experienced for 16 days, don’t miss it! Make ti me to enjoy the warm welcome of arti sts and makers across our town. STEAM into Walthamstow and enjoy the trail!

Cover Artist Profile: Helen Maurer I’ve had a studio in Blackhorse Lane for 6 years. There are around 28 artists in our building and we are opening our studios as part of the E17 Art Trail on the weekend of 16-18 June (venue 4). When I’m not in the studio, I spend quite a lot of time in the Salvation Army on Forest Road! I collect a lot of things from charity shops such as glassware, furniture and other objects to include in installations. I love not knowing what I’ll find there. My ideas develop through experimenting, by projecting light through glass to see what happens. I often use projectors to try and get something large-scale from the smallest source, and movement and sound to create a more immersive experience. The work featured on the cover forms part of a garden of glass and light, originally created for a 12th century church in York. It’s always interesting to make something for an unusual location, as the architecture and the history of the space inspires the idea and takes the work in a new direction. In the church, for example, there was a small garden painted on a fragment of glass, high up within the medieval windows. Someone restoring the window must have painted it. I liked the idea of creating my own secret garden so I worked on a series of light installations that could be ‘planted’ within the space, and this was later re-configured within a gallery space. Much of the foliage was collected while walking my son to school in Lloyd Park.
Helen Maurer was born in Portsmouth then studied Fine Art and Theatre at Brighton University, before completing an MA in Glass at The Royal College of Art. She has exhibited internationally and collaborated on a number of joint projects with other artists, choreographers and musicians. She lives and works in London and is represented by Danielle Arnaud contemporary Art.

Where I Work Where I Work is a celebration of Walthamstow’s creative community. Carmel King has been documenting artists and designers working within the borough for the past year and is working towards making a book of the series. As well as focusing on the breadth of products being made locally, the series examines the work space and how an artist’s studio or workshop determines the scale of the work created. As property and rents rise, artists have to move and adapt to the spaces available, or build a space at home. The E17 Art Trail provides a rare insight into these creative studios and artistic practises. The Art Trail highlights the variety of work spaces within the borough, from shared studios to garden sheds. A series of photographs will be shown alongside interviews by Rebecca Coffee, on the BBC Live Screen, Walthamstow Town Square throughout the Art Trail.

In our Lab, a slide show reveals the abstract beauty of deadly viruses. You can inspect the molecules in everyday objects and see beautiful creatures through a microscope. An artist’s photographs show the camera lens’s view vs. that of the human eye. theresamhudson@gmail.com
Sat-Sun 10am-10pm, Tue-Fri 12pm-10pm
The intention is to inspire people to look at everything from a new perspective. We can get caught up with daily challenges but if we see our life from a different perspective and see the big picture, everything is beautiful.

Fabulous collection of paintings and drawings by an Adult Art Class [Arts Commune] based in Chingford. Come and see what we are all about and take on a painting challenge.
Guest artists show sculpture in the garden. Sam Zealey’s ‘Concord’ is a 2m high folded steel aeroplane and Patrick O’Sullivan’s ‘Spanish Steps’, a construction that pushes the idea of painting as a structural object.

Watch a film, step inside the film and start painting it or just watch people painting the film. Join Hassan Vawda in this interactive live painting installation. The earlier in the day, the more child-friendly the film.
Mark uses digital photography to make work that is both image and object, representation and invention while attempting to extend photographic time beyond fractions of a second.
