In memory of Helen Alveranga There are some artists who have supported the E17 Art Trail since its inaugural year in 2005. As we go to print we’ve learned that painter Helen Alveranga has passed away. Helen’s hyperreal representations of the natural world have captivated us year on year and have gained recognition with awards including SAA Best Professional Artist of the Year 2016. Infused with our STEAM theme, painters, sculptors, poets, choirs, photographers, designers, ceramicists, and dancers welcome you to enjoy exhibiti ons, performances and workshops in the studios and streets, parks and pubs, cafes and shopping centres, faith spaces and community places. STEAM is the acronym acknowledging the infl uence of creati ve disciplines in STEM subjects: Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths.

“I was indulging my own interests in choosing the STEAM theme this year, but was delighted to fi nd that it resonates with so many people who have enjoyed responding to it.” Laura Kerry, Creati ve Director, E17 Art Trail. Across Walthamstow, arti sts, makers and neighbours have been conducti ng their own experiments, tests and research as they prepare their exhibits and events. Local residents are applying their creati vity in exploring phenomenons in zoology, physics, chemistry, ecology, geometry, analog and digital technology. Whilst debates rage nati onally about the value of investi ng in the creati ve arts in educati on, 23 local schools, colleges and nurseries have determinedly found ti me and resources to share the incredible creati ve work of their young arti sts in the festi val. Our STEAM theme has proved a ferti le opportunity for Arti llery to begin to foster links with researchers in nearby universiti es, new relati onships that we hope may inform future collaborati ons in our neighbourhood. Parti cipati on in the E17 Art Trail has grown to truly epic proporti ons whilst the festi val conti nues to operate on a modest budget combining funds gratefully received from our local authority, local sponsors and registrati on fees. As we go to print, we calculate 1 in 15 local residents are creati vely contributi ng to the programme, and we expect this to rise! So we are hugely grateful to the incredibly talented local volunteers who have shared their ti me, energy and specialist skills to help make sure that this phenomenal programme is enjoyed fully by visitors. Cover Artist Profile: Helen Maurer I’ve had a studio in Blackhorse Lane for 6 years. There are around 28 artists in our building and we are opening our studios as part of the E17 Art Trail on the weekend of 16-18 June (venue 4). When I’m not in the studio, I spend quite a lot of time in the Salvation Army on Forest Road! I collect a lot of things from charity shops such as glassware, furniture and other objects to include in installations. I love not knowing what I’ll find there. My ideas develop through experimenting, by projecting light through glass to see what happens. I often use projectors to try and get something large-scale from the smallest source, and movement and sound to create a more immersive experience. The work featured on the cover forms part of a garden of glass and light, originally created for a 12th century church in York. It’s always interesting to make something for an unusual location, as the architecture and the history of the space inspires the idea and takes the work in a new direction. In the church, for example, there was a small garden painted on a fragment of glass, high up within the medieval windows. Someone restoring the window must have painted it. I liked the idea of creating my own secret garden so I worked on a series of light installations that could be ‘planted’ within the space, and this was later re-configured within a gallery space. Much of the foliage was collected while walking my son to school in Lloyd Park.

Helen Maurer was born in Portsmouth then studied Fine Art and Theatre at Brighton University, before completing an MA in Glass at The Royal College of Art. She has exhibited internationally and collaborated on a number of joint projects with other artists, choreographers and musicians. She lives and works in London and is represented by Danielle Arnaud contemporary Art.

Where I Work Where I Work is a celebration of Walthamstow’s creative community. Carmel King has been documenting artists and designers working within the borough for the past year and is working towards making a book of the series. As well as focusing on the breadth of products being made locally, the series examines the work space and how an artist’s studio or workshop determines the scale of the work created. As property and rents rise, artists have to move and adapt to the spaces available, or build a space at home. The E17 Art Trail provides a rare insight into these creative studios and artistic practises. The Art Trail highlights the variety of work spaces within the borough, from shared studios to garden sheds. A series of photographs will be shown alongside interviews by Rebecca Coffee, on the BBC Live Screen, Walthamstow Town Square throughout the Art Trail.
