For our 10th year we have made a number of key changes designed to encourage us all to be a bit bolder in our Art Trail choices. E17 Art Trail is now mapped out as 8 mini-Art Trails under one large Art Trail banner. These mini-trails each come with their own distinctive character and sense of neighbourhood and we’ve included our favourite Art Trail pubs and cafés for you to rest and recuperate on route. Of course being 10 is a landmark birthday: we’re wondering what lies ahead. The landscape for East London has changed so substantially over the past 10 years – how can the E17 Art Trail grow and develop in a way that continues to express the ambitions of the people who live, work and visit here and have invested so much in its success ? We’d like to know what you think. This June our team of volunteer Festival Ambassadors will be inviting everyone they meet at Art Trail events or spot holding an Art Trail guide to join in the conversation. Give us your best idea and let us know what you think. We’ll be tweeting and posting (#e17arttrail) the best ideas during the Art Trail. At the end of the Art Trail we’ll be sharing the feedback and perhaps picking a few ‘winners’ to run with. Artists’ Open Houses stand at the heart of the Art Trail and are an enduring and evocative expression of all that is so rewarding about living in a creative community. Our 2014 theme – ‘inhabit’ – is a way of marking this with a programme strand (details page 6) that considers not just where we live but how. It can be no coincidence that the role of the Warner Family and their social as well as physical shaping of the Walthamstow community has emerged as such as strong element of the 2014 E17 Art Trail. Parallel to this runs a consideration of how we can best align the drive of urban expansion with a respect for our community’s history and we are delighted to be sharing this part of our programme with the London Festival of Architecture 2014 (www.londonfestivalofarchitecture.org).

This year E17 Art Trail is 10. From the inaugural Artillery E17 Art Trail in 2005, a one-day festival with 50 exhibitions, to the 2014 Art Trail showcasing work by 4,000 artists for an audience of more than 15,000, the E17 Art Trail has truly been taken to the hearts of those who’ve trod its path. Together we’ve seen art in front gardens, shop windows, on hedges and at bus-stops as well as in our flagship galleries. Each Art Trail there are pop-up events in shops, community centres, churches and outdoor spaces and a wonderful programme of walks, talks and cycle routes that open up the hidden and not-so-hidden areas of E17. Like you, we are in awe of how talented our East London neighbourhood is and we love how wholeheartedly ‘our’ E17 Art Trail has become ‘your’ E17 Art Trail too.

Inhabit When we were invited a response to the theme of ‘inhabit’ we knew we were setting a tough task. ‘Inhabit’ is about the now, the present moment, as much as it is about the where. We hoped it would spark work considering not just how we decide to make our home or shape our community but also about why we choose one particular place over another. Why here? Why now? Why Walthamstow?

Exploring Muslim Heritage Through Islamic 114 Home Décor Exhibitions, The Village Trail This new exhibition offers an intriguing insight into Muslim home decor over the past decades. An investigation into the significance of artefacts in the Muslim home, in particular the evolution of styles, the exhibition will include artifacts drawn from local residents’ homes. www.everydaymuslim.org

The responses – well, what did we really expect. They are a dizzying invocation of change presented in the uniquely challenging and inspiring way we have come to expect from E17 Art Trail contributors. Taken together these exhibitions, walks and events provide an exciting evocation of local life, providing a context for contemporary experiences against a backdrop of social, politicial, economic change that we will all recognise, and not just from recent Olympic-driven years.

Venue 164 (Events – Wood Street Trail) In the historic surroundings of St Peter’s in-the-Forest Church, this illustrated talk from Dr Neil Houghton (Walthamstow Historical Society) will consider why the Warner family chose to develop their land for housing and what impact this had locally.

W.E.: The Ex-Warner Project

William Morris Trail William Morris Trail is named after Walthamstow’s most famous son – the textile designer, artist, writer and socialist pioneer. The acclaimed, awardwinning William Morris Gallery at the south end of Lloyd Park sits in the middle of this Trail and if you haven’t visited it yet, then you certainly should – but there is so much more to see here. William Morris Trail is all about Artists’ Open Houses, a special part of the E17 Art Trail and at the heart of what makes us so distinctive. Now a world-wide movement, the concept behind the Open House is the opportunity for artists and spectator to engage in a more direct and immediate way. It’s about conversation, debate and, occasionally, tea and it’s certainly the most exciting and insightful way to appreciate the creative talent in the Walthamstow community. Chapel End Trail

Chapel End Trail runs along the most northern streets in Walthamstow and is home to local landmarks, the Town Hall and the Walthamstow Stadium. It has a focus on presenting creative work by children and young people: with exhibitions from all the area’s schools and colleges this is a great opportunity to recognise just how talented the younger residents of Waltham Forest are. In keeping with the family focus, you’ll find plenty of activities and exhibitions here to engage and intrigue younger spectators. Chapel End Trail is home to one of E17 Art Trail’s most popular family (Lego-themed) destinations and some rather friendly dinosaurs, a polar bear and a comic strip dog have also taken up residence here.

High Street Trail runs the length of Walthamstow High Street. Start at one end and enjoy quite literally, an E17 Art Trail kilometre. With local shops, businesses and homes acting as pop-up venues and gallery spaces, there are places to pause and reflect as well as those that present a more immediate ‘hit’ as you pass by. From a one-off artwork commissioned for an end-of-gable-wall to art growing on trees in the Town Square and unique poster-art in the Victoria Line underpass, this is about art as part of daily life, to be glimpsed and enjoyed as the river of London life rushes us all onward.

A series of photographic portraits taken for the E list magazine. Each has appeared in the regular ‘Local Hero’ feature, about local people and the contributions they have made to the community in E17.

Markhouse & Leabridge Trail

I love to make animal sculptures from recycled material usually used as plants pots. My venue is hosted in my little coffee kiosk called Madre Tierra.

There are two houses dominating Markhouse & Leabridge Trail – the domestic and the spiritual – and E17 Art Trail aims to equip you for both. The two churches in the area, St Barnabas and St Saviour’s, act as creative hubs with broad and diverse programmes of cross art-form work that aims to illuminate and inspire. Take your time enjoying the artwork on display but also stop to admire the architectural framework of these two, inspiring local landmarks. Come down to earth and we offer a conversation with an interior designer and two furniture workshops, with a wonderful chance to look at existing collections of artisan made pieces as well commission work from local makers.

Running from the Village to Epping Forest, it has strong roots in the artisan community due to the area’s industrial past.
