Dear Audience, Thank you for supporting this local creative community. Your support really matters, especially after the past year. Buying locally produced artwork helps local creatives to continue to work. Giving your feedback is invaluable to artists in developing their creative projects. Artists tell us that the E17 Art Trail is somewhere they can test their ideas with a generous audience and that the conversations they have with you influences their next steps. Most of the locations you visit will not be purpose built arts centres but are instead an intriguing mix of homes, studios, businesses and community spaces. Throughout their preparations for this festival, artists have been finding solutions to welcome visitors to their art works without compromising public health. As we go to print, restrictions have been cautiously lifted to Step 3, we cannot predict exactly what restrictions will be in place in July. Please help make this an enjoyable, safe festival by:

• Let the artist know promptly if you can no longer attend a booked time slot - your booking can be released for someone else to use.

• Please remember, some exhibitors have a limited number of time slots available - please do honour your booking. If you are struggling to book for an exhibition that you are especially interested in, do contact the artist to try and arrange a visit by appointment.

PoSSIBLE FUTURES: IMAGInATIon, InGEnUITy AnD DETERMInATIon

We were unsure what to expect this year - but wow! hundreds upon hundreds of artists and makers have signed up, either as individuals, in groups or as part of collectives of all age groups and from across the local community. The E17 Art Trail has always been a festi val that reveals the spaces in which arti sts, makers and creators work. Those treasured festi val moments as we step over the threshold into a family home where creati vity has thrived and fi lls living rooms, halls and gardens. Discovering hidden studios, exploring faith spaces and schools where people welcome us in.

And so, it has been with some trepidati on and uncertainty that we started to plan and adapt for this year’s E17 Art Trail. We never doubt the imaginati on, ingenuity, determinati on and resilience of our creati ve community. Each year they push the boundaries of what is possible and invent new creati ve off ers. We bring you “Possible Futures”.

We owe an enormous debt to every single person that contributed to our Crowdfunder last year, our local business sponsors and our funders who kept faith in Arti llery’s vision and which means we are able to host this year’s festi val and other neighbourhood projects. It also enabled us to stay connected even as physical walls and regulati ons may have kept us apart.

As we think of our theme - Possible Futures - it’s not just been the pandemic which preoccupies us. Arti sts and creati ves are squaring up to the challenges of the climate emergency, social injusti ce, inequaliti es and the precarious future of our creati ve sector. We profi led some of the passionate, socially conscious and engaged approaches of local and internati onal arti sts in a series of “Creati ve Climate” online discussions. Our panels shared diff erent ways creati ve networks are adapti ng their creati ve practi ce and inspired us with a sense of the possibiliti es of our own acti ons.

In March 2020, we began weekly check-ins on Zoom. Together we devised an online programme and by the summer of 2020 we launched a series of Arti sts Open Houses Online events. Not only did this give us and arti sts some experience in fi lmmaking or broadcasti ng live, but it enabled us to take a virtual step over those thresholds. The resulti ng fi lms are a very special record of the challenging circumstances of living and working through Covid-19 with many arti sts unwell, or shielding, adapti ng to working from home, or relocati ng to wherever they had caring responsibiliti es. We are hugely grateful for their generous act of sharing their personal experiences. And it conti nues to be a privilege to become part of those arti sts’ stories.

Care and well being is evident in the programme. It refl ects the support that can grow between parti cipants. Making connecti ons is an integral part of this festi val, it is one of the essenti al ingredients with which it conti nues to fl ourish. As are you.

CoVER ARTIST: MATThEW kRIShAnU Matt hew Krishanu is a painter based in Blackhorse Lane Studios, Walthamstow. The painti ng on the cover (Two Boys on a Boat, 2018, oil on paper, 21 x 30cm) is the fi rst version of an image Matt hew has painted three ti mes. A much larger version on canvas (Riverboat, 2020) is part of this year’s John Moores Painting Prize exhibiti on, and a small version on board, Two Boys on a Boat, 2019, will be included in the Hayward Gallery’s exhibiti on Painting in the UK opening this September. The painti ng depicts Matt hew and his brother on a rowing boat on a river in Bangladesh, where he spent his childhood. Matt hew’s recent painti ngs construct narrati ves exploring memory, childhood, religion and colonial histories.

Matt hew has twice been included in the John Moores Painting Prize, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool (2018 & 2020), and has works in collecti ons including the Arts Council Collecti on, Government Art Collecti on, Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, Huddersfi eld Art Gallery, The Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, India, and Jiangsu Art Museum, China.

This year we have increased our focus on accessibility and inclusion. Our advisors and project leads introduce some of these initi ati ves here.

Possible futures Exhibition Since August 2020, our network has been discussing diff erent soluti ons for sharing artwork with audiences. A large scale group show was one such soluti on. We have appreciated collaborati ng with Dark Yellow Dot and Gnome House to realise the Possible Futures Exhibiti on. “Dark Yellow Dot is a platf orm I established to create opportuniti es for emerging arti sts by partnering with individuals and community groups like Arti llery of the E17 Art Trail that care about bringing real arti sts into real spaces, making art accessible to real people.” Lauren Little, Dark Yellow Dot and curator Possible Futures Exhibition

Worthy - NBAM Worthy was an ‘analogue’ project reaching people who were being digitally excluded during the Covid-19 pandemic, providing an opportunity for those who live with long term health conditi ons to be a part of a community focused art by post project that considered ideas of worth and value. “The E17 Art Trail is a great way of bringing our parti cipants together and sharing the mail art project with the community, refl ecti ng on the past year and what worth and value means.” Neesha Badhan, NBAM

Access We have encouraged our arti sts and makers to do as much as they can to provide access to their exhibiti ons and events, taking into account that many have limited resources, and many Art Trail acti viti es take place in people’s homes and private studios. Because it won’t be possible to provide access for all at all exhibiti ons and events, one of our prioriti es has been to provide more informati on about accessibility, in order to support people to make informed choices. “Everyone should have the opportunity to be involved in creati ve acti viti es, and it’s our collecti ve responsibility to make this happen. It’s my hope that this will enable us to welcome more disabled people and others who have access requirements to access as much of the E17 Art Trail as possible.” Sarah Teichler, Access Consultant & Inclusion Advisor

Artist support Farah Ishaq has led on Arti st Support as we prepare for the festi val. More than any of us, she has been at the end of the phone, picking up emails and messages, comments and queries on our social media platf orm. “It’s been thrilling to support our arti sts and organisers over the last six months and I’m excited to see the array of works developed by newcomers and experienced Trailers alike. From piloti ng peer groups and bringing together expert panels, we have had to fi nd new ways of helping creati ves develop their thoughts into events and feel some sense of connecti on. I can’t wait to see the events take place and I look forward to seeing how the festi val arti sts develop post-Art Trail too!” Farah Ishaq, Artist Support

An Art Trail in Minecraft “When I was thinking about how to produce the E17 Art Trail my son said “Why don’t you just do it in Minecraft ?” like it was the most obvious thing in the world. So, we’re developing a project for minecraft enthusiasts and hope to share some of the things created at the William Morris Gallery for the festi val. MEET THE ARTISTS Each year of the E17 Art Trail we have the opportunity to celebrate diverse artists and art forms all over Walthamstow. As part of the festival preparations, we commissioned a series of photo portraits and short films to share stories of artists taking part, or who have taken part, in the E17 Art Trail. The photographers are both based in Walthamstow. Jane Sharp is a freelance photographer, and a single mother recovering from cancer surgery. You can see her latest work exhibited at Mothers Hub on the Wood Street Trail for the festival. Laura Martinez Da Silva is a young Venezuelan woman who is in the early stages of establishing her practice which includes exploring subjects around family, remembrance and migration. Laura is exhibiting at Big Creative Academy, Blackhorse Trail. Our filmmaker, Natalie Sloan of Little Red Hen Films brings her film making skills to work locally with good causes because she believes in the power of capturing the stories of ordinary people who do extraordinary things as well as creating opportunities for young people to break into the film industry and for those needing to work more flexibly.

Jim Jack photographed by Jane Sharp Jim Jack first studied painting at Walthamstow Art College. Within weeks he had moved into sculpture which has been his focus ever since. His work is inspired by the variety of forms he finds in nature. “My practice has always included an element of outreach work. The creativity I encounter has always fed back into my work, it always means that I am not working in a self-inflicted bubble.”

Sba is a textile artist. “My creativity and passion is fuelled and inspired by my Muslim Indo/British heritage. I enjoy the networking aspect of the E17 Art Trail, I meet like-minded individuals that may be cross-disciplinary as well as being from a different background, who are willing to collaborate on projects.”

Rasheeqa Ahmad/Hedge Herbs is a trained herbalist with a passion for how we nurture wildness in our neighbourhoods. With a team of local residents she has created a Community Healing Garden. “Community for me is about sharing joy, support, self-sustaining circles of resources and knowing where the skills and the strengths are, so we can bring them to where they are needed.”

Sam Griffiths AKA Griffics photographed by Laura Martinez Da Silva Sam Griffiths established Griffics to create playful products, artwork, activities and workshops. He says: “I think play is a really important part of our lives. It helps us think more flexibly, engage with the world more positively, it’s active, it’s how we learn about the world and I think it’s one of the best ways to help shape it”. 6

The E17 Art Trail is a rare opportunity for them to work together. Says Yaarit: ”The Art Trail is a great initiative and I think it brings people together. It makes art more accessible and it makes your neighbours more accessible too. In this way it has a really positive effect on the community”.

Lloyd Ramos photographed by Jane Sharp Lloyd Ramos is a photographer. Two of his recent photos were selected for the Taylor Wessing Photo Prize at The National Portrait Gallery and are part of a series he has been working on which he plans to exhibit at the E17 Art Trail. “The series is focused on and around the act of shopping on the High Street amongst the backdrop of Covid-19.”

Veronica describes herself as a ‘jack-of-all-trades’ artist. “I have worked with Waltham Forest Carers using art in a therapeutic way. If you were focused on the art, people could let go of something that was upsetting them and know other people understood. One of the other reasons I’m an artist is the sociability of it. The E17 Art Trail gave me the confidence and then the rest is history.”
