Message from our funder Waltham Forest Council If you didn’t already know, this year Waltham Forest is the Mayor’s first ever London Borough of Culture. Exploring the themes ‘Radicals’, ‘Makers’ and ‘Fellowship’, the programme is a collaboration between local residents, artists and creatives; creating a once in a lifetime celebration of the place we all call ‘home’. The year is intended to shine a light on the character, diversity and cultures of the borough – the things we have in common and the things that make us different – through a year-long celebration of the real cultures of London by the people who live here. This year’s E17 Art Trail is bigger than ever and set to be a major highlight in the London Borough of Culture 2019 programme. COME ON IN: WELCOME TO THE 15TH E17 ART TRAIL Each year of the E17 Art Trail we are overwhelmed by the creativity and energy of the artists, makers, and residents who live here. It seems fitting that we will all be enjoying the 15th E17 Art Trail in the same year that Waltham Forest is London’s first Borough of Culture. Without a doubt, the connections, collaborations and support of the artists, audiences and volunteers involved in the E17 Art Trail make this the place of talent, community and creativity which earned us a place in this wider cultural spotlight.

Year on year the E17 Art Trail grows and embraces its residents and visitors. WONDER {OF ART & SCIENCE} Wonder. It’s at the heart of any artist’s brief: I wonder what happens when… – It’s the nervous excitement of getting ready to open a show: I wonder if anyone will turn up.

the work of our local creative community and take this to be a litmus test for contemporary art and science.

– It’s the invitation every artist makes to you, the audience: to stop a while, enjoy, wonder… interrogate…unpack…respond.

Our Idea Sparks Talks, in preparation for this festival, have examined the process of creative enquiry and experimentation into, for instance, neuroplasticity or the phenomenon of light. In March, our immersive creative learning environment: Wonder with Light sparked earnest experimentation by learners from seven local schools, nurseries and colleges, and also in seven community sessions for local groups and families. It evoked irrepressible curiosity among all ages: from 3 month olds to adults and brought the wow! of Wonder! to our wider networks.

– It’s at the heart of every human enquiry. Wonder and curiosity precipitate into questions which in turn inform experiments. The first findings are shared for constructive review, this scrutiny prompts new experiments, and the results can be illuminating. Both an artist and a scientist will be familiar with this process. So we’ve been increasingly perplexed by the conventional understanding that science or the arts are mutually exclusive disciplines. Or that one has more rigour than the other. We are reassured to find plenty of evidence to discredit this assumption in

COVER ARTIST: SIMON PEMBERTON Simon was born on The Wirral near Liverpool and moved to London to study BA Design then MA Illustration at Central St. Martin’s College of Art. He now lives and works in London’s east end with a studio overlooking London Fields. His illustration work has been commissioned by a wide range of major design, publishing and advertising agencies worldwide. Simon has won many awards including the V&A Editorial Illustration Award, many Association of Illustrators’ Best of British Illustration awards for his advertising, design, book covers and editorial work and has been selected for American Illustration awards ‘AI34’ and recently shortlisted for the V&A Book Illustration Award. Simon is a biker of mountains, forest dweller and lover of tea huts.

Grandad’s Island at the Walthamstow Garden Party Lloyd Park, 13-14 July We love how the E17 Art Trail brings neighbours together and makes local talent visible. So we’re delighted to have London Borough of Culture funding to do exactly that across the whole borough with our new project Grandad’s Island: From Page to Pavement. Inspired by Grandad’s Island, the award-winning picture book by local authorillustrator Benji Davies, will you join us in launching this ambitious project at Walthamstow Garden Party?

Artemisia visits Waltham Forest In 2018 the National Gallery acquired the first painting in their collection by Artemisia Gentileschi, one of the most celebrated artists of the 17th century. Through spring and summer 2019, Self Portrait as Saint Catherine of Alexandria is visiting a series of unusual and unexpected venues across the UK, including a girl’s school and a health centre. She will finish her journey in Waltham Forest for the E17 Art Trail. UP FOR SEEING MORE ART IN WALTHAMSTOW AFTER THE E17 ART TRAIL? London’s largest free contemporary art festival, Art Night, is coming to Walthamstow on Saturday 22 June for one night only. The festival is formed of the Curated Programme of 12 projects, curated by Helen Nisbet, and a further 40+ projects selected as part of Art Night Open. The projects are diverse and often participatory, including outdoor performances, new musical compositions, video installations, club nights, and billboard art.

With internationally acclaimed artists such as Barbara Kruger, Cory Arcangel, Joe Namy, Emma Talbot and Alice Theobald celebrating and drawing inspiration from the area, the festival will occupy familiar places where people are brought together in everyday life, often collaborating with the community to create artworks. These will include Walthamstow Market, St Mary’s Church, Walthamstow Library, The Mall and many others.
