Editor's Notes I am always astounded and very grateful for the quality of the artists and writers that contribute to Artinzene. I would like to thank all of our contributors, sponsors and readers for being a part of Artinzene. This month we have Jeska Valk as our featured artist who has recently exhibited at Lume Gallery in Byron Bay and previously at the Dust Temple in Currumbin. Jeska’s work is incredibly intricate paintings and she manages to create the most life-like paintings that almost appear to be photographs. Jeska shares her story of the protection of the environment inspires and drives her creativity. Through Veruschka Normandeau’s photography she explores the very essence of coconut and the vibrational energy that this sacred plant excudes. Our regular Naturopath Rhianna Smith gives us insight into Natural Healthcare for Pets and also the benefits of trying alternative health therapies.

Growing up surrounded by the beautiful beaches of the Southern Gold-Coast and the tranquility of the forests of the hinterland, Jeska Valk has developed a strong appreciation and awareness of the importance of the natural environment. Her striking oil paintings beautifully and skillfully reflect this passion and serve to highlight the pressing need to protect and cherish the natural world. The Gold Coast’s rapidly increasing population and growing human footprint, while often unnoticed by many, deeply concerns Jeska, so she creates images honouring those who strive to protect the environment as well as images that send a strong social message about the devastation wrought on fragile ecosystems such as the oceans and rainforests.

As an emerging artist, Jeska’s work gained local prominence as artist-inresidence at the Village Markets in Currumbin in 2014 - 2015 where her work began to evolve into the intricate, detailed portraits we see today. Since then she has won the People’s Choice Award at the Hinge Gallery Dust Temple’s ‘Inaugural Portrait Competition’ and held two solo shows. Her paintings tell stories of destruction, beauty, strength and hope. Jeska’s most recent exhibition “Beneath the Surface”, showcased at

ART the Lume Gallery in Byron Bay, focuses on the impact humans have on the oceans. By looking beneath the surface Jeska strives to expose the destructive effects our everyday actions have on this delicate ecosystem. Inspired by the exceptional people she met in the environmental movement Jeska developed a stunning, thought provoking series devoted to local activists entitled “Earth Warriors” which was exhibited at The Hinge Gallery - Dust Temple in Currumbin, Queensland in 2016. “I’m an optimist - humans destructive impact on the earth’s natural environment may be nearing the irreversible stage, but I hold strong hope for new mindsets and a new generation to create a healthier future for our planet.” Jeska hopes that through her work she will increase awareness and generate support for the organisations working hard to help save our environment. “Raising awareness about the efforts that people are making to minimize and even reverse environmental damage, is an important step toward a new and sustainable way of thinking. I want people to be more conscious about the way that we use and dispose of our resources.”

Images of Jeska’s work have been published in the 2013 and forthcoming 2017 editions of “Semi Permanent”, a book showcasing designers, artists & creative icons from across the globe. A percentage of profits from the sale of her paintings is contributed to environmental projects such as ‘The Ocean Clean Up’, an organisation founded by Boyan Slat who, at 17 developed technologies to remove plastic from the ocean. One system he designed could theoretically remove approximately half the “Great Pacific Garbage Patch” in 10 years. Visit www.theoceancleanup.com to find our more. No Other

by Veruschka Normandeau The vibrational essence of coconut trees is that of “uplifted spiritual awareness”. Excerpt of it’s applications: About twenty years are required for the coconut palm tree to reach a state of full bearing - a perfect symbol for Coconut essence’s quality of perseverance. “Patience, endurance attaineth to all,” promised the Spanish saint Teresa of Avila. Coconut, then helps us to commit to resolutions and solutions and to believe that they are here to be found.

18

artinzene/ Issue #10

The positive Coconut state is splendid for completing tasks. We live in an age when one’s word means so little. We make promises and then break them. We start projects and then quit. In a recent Broadway play, the female lead confessed to her friend that she had once been married. “How long?” he asked. “Oh, I don’t know,” she replied, “but it seemed like weeks.” Of course this is a joke, although a sad one, revealing a certain lack of commitment and the express need for Coconut Essence.

ART No Other By Veruschka Normandeau of Magicwood Studios Active Earth Prayer documented and infused with vibrational essence of Palm tree I chose these majestic palm trees for this setting. Palm trees are regal, majestic and full of grace and thus I refer to them as Santa Maria, full of Grace. I honor them for their beauty, resilience and unwavering giving of support, shade and bountiful coconuts, which qualities are too numerous to mention. She is a giving tree. I have never seen an unpleasing silhouette and they always appear to be dancing in the wind. This gorgeous park on the Big Island of Hawaii feels like heaven on earth. Neatly planted palms, lined up, ushering you in as you go to soak in a massive hot spring called Warm Ponds directly on the wild Pacific that is the geo-thermally heated by our active volcano, with a flow ten miles down the road‌.the new earth being born. I figured that these palms, post sunset, would make strong and graceful allies and witnesses for an active earth prayer with two pixie beauties, strangers to each other, bearing their souls and mirroring each other’s woes. ART Coconut gives a clearer, more spiritual focus. It will help to give you the energy to endure, or to rise above every test. It shows us the value of seeing a challenge through to its conclusion, no matter how difficult it is. Poet Robert Frost put it well: “The best way out is always through.” Affirmation: “I see every obstacle as an opportunity to rise in inner happiness and freedom!” Do we ourselves feel full of grace, compassion and presence? Or do we feel darkness, disappointment, shame and grief, making us defensive, protective and suspect of everyone’s intention. How do we bridge the gap of not enough to generous contentment, passion and curiosity…. connection with others and the world. We live in a world of separation, competition and a sense of not being able to figure it all out, and keep that feeling of disconnect to ourselves at all costs…. Then how can we heal? How can we rise from our pain like a lotus? We need those breaks of grace where someone can hold that space for and with you, judgement free. ARTINZENE / Issue #10

Art We require to be validated in order to move on. We need human understanding to feel like we belong here and are a part of this race. Unfortunately, most of us are simply too ignorant which comes off as an air of arrogance, when our own worthlessness is as close as our very skin, carrying a facade of strength, while alienating others. We are all closed and we all lose and maintain the islands we are all on. What do we have to risk to reach out and connect? Our hearts cracking, our true self opening and releasing false labels…. Our own self-judgement is kept in check when we hang on to our beliefs that we most likely inherited from the voices of our parents. Rivalled with the judgement we are regularly doling out on others….. “Look at them, I can’t believe they would do such a thing, don’t they know they can’t get away with wearing that, look at that asshole cutting me off… why on earth would she stay with that guy???” What if one person suspends judgement and truly inquires ”What is up for you?” Can you accept that other person’s feelings and their bad day and experience? Can you relate? Can you forgive them? Then can you validate your own feelings that you deem as wrong? What part of you is practicing self-preservation while still remaining completely stuck and miserable unable to receive love? 22

Featured are these two beauties Amy and Caitlyn, standing barefoot in front of each other, in flowing gowns, with these lovely coco-trees holding space. It was effortless to open up to a stranger. Then the stranger repeated back, all of their current challenges and outrages. There was laughter, there were tears. and there was absolute understanding, identical topics and feelings. Women connecting, accepting each other, being seen, heard and releasing all negativity as compost back into the ground, in an absolutely safe space. We are an embodiment of mother, of mother’s message, we need to honour and accept ourselves and open more leniently and compassionately to all others after validating our own feelings and perceptions. Moving from competition to collaboration and allegiance and standing tall like these cocos, in equal power and beauty, is our destiny and birth-right. This is a call to action to drop the judgement - it is spiritual violence. When we look to nature and connect to our true nature, all false is exposed. It may take some unfavourable feelings of pain to release that which is not real, but acquired, yet every part of it will be worthwhile for the sweet victory.

Health Natural Health For Pets By Rhianna Smith

Being a naturopath I am fully committed to using natural medicine for my own health, and the health of my family, friends and patients. But when my partner and I became the proud caretakers of a 7 year old Staffordshire bull terrier named Rex, I was able to explore a whole new world of natural remedy application. After falling in love with him almost immediately, it was heart wrenching one morning when we woke up to find Rex coughing violently. At first we thought it might have just been something he sucked into his wide, laughing mouth, but as we took him for a walk, he continued to have episodes of deep hacking coughs. That evening it got a bit worse, his cough came every time he was excited or ran. We realised with that ‘new parent’ type of panic that our dog was sick! Immediately I started thinking of vets and medicines and the bills that would bring in. Then in the midst of the worry, I remembered I was a naturopath! I guess panic in regards to our pups health clouded my usually rational mind. 32

artinzene/ Issue #10

health

After researching his symptoms, I decided it sounded like a case of kennel cough. I had been told that kennel cough was going around some of the dog walking parks, and although it wasn’t the same park we went to, it is not hard to think of a kennel cough season the way we think of flu season for humans. Researching further, I discovered some common homeopathic remedies are specific for kennel cough, as well as certain herbs common in herbal throat spray designed for humans, that could be used to numb and sooth the throat of animals too. I started dosing Rex with these homeopathics at the recommended amount, 4 times a day. After the first day of 4 doses, he was 70% better, by the third day he wasn’t coughing at all. From my research, kennel cough will usually last 2 weeks at least. I was absolutely blown away with how well this remedy worked on him, and how quickly. The herbal throat spray he hated (understandably, many humans hate it too!) and the little I had left in the cupboard ran out after the first day so I’m not sure how much that played a part, but the homeopathics worked for sure!

So what do you do if you want more specific treatment for your beloved pet? You could join a natural medicine community for pets on Facebook, or get yourself some first aid kits for animals from online stores such as Holistic Animal Medicines, or locate your closest holistic vet. In regards to our Rex, in the time we have had him we have also treated a few hot spots with a natural ointment containing essential oils such as tea tree and lavender. Once I have also given him Emergency Essence Flower Essences during a thunderstorm as he is frightened of thunder. It works a treat to calm anxious pets down. Diet wise, he often gets some green smoothie for breakfast (which he loves), plenty of bones for healthy teeth, some dollops of coconut oil or raw eggs for a shiny coat as well as fish oil and glucosamine for his joints. He is not a young dog, but we plan on spending the next 7 years with him at least, so our priority is keeping him in the best health possible. Animals respond extremely well to homeopathic medicine as well as specific herbal tinctures, supplements and dietary support. That being said, animals do not have the same biological make up as us, so it is best to check with someone who knows before dosing your pet up with some of your own supplements or naturopathic treatments. Certain remedies that aid us can harm them, so getting advice first is always wisest. There are holistic vets around, but personally I like having a little first aid kit at home to use first, and then contacting the vet if needed.

Give it a Go

By Rhianna Smith

As a naturopath, I often hear “Oh, I have tried such-and-such (a product, a treatment, a modality) and it didn’t work for me.” When I was studying to be a naturopath, if a patient would tell me something along these lines I would believe them without question, but now with years of experience behind me, I always want to dig a little deeper. It often comes back to the what, when, and how long when you are looking at natural medicine. If you are currently taking a supplement, trying a different eating style, or getting some new treatments in any modality, and you are not sure if the particular therapy is working for you, go through the points below to find out if you really have given it a good enough go to gauge its efficacy. Sometimes things take time… This is the most important aspect of giving something new a try. How long did you do it for? What the new thing is, will also influence how long you should try it for, but generally I suggest trying something new for at least 3-6 months before making a judgement on how it works. I know that may seem like a lot of time and money to ‘waste’ if the modality doesn’t end up meeting your needs, but in my experience, this time frame will give you a clear answer as to whether this treatment is right for you. In regards to natural supplements, different supplements should be used for certain periods of time before expecting to see results. The specifics for individual supplements can be explored more with your naturopath or nutritionist but for example, iron supplements should be taken for at least 4 months to allow iron levels to increase in the blood. Red blood cells have a 120 day turn over rate, which means the body needs 120 days taking iron to make significant biological changes. Taking iron for one week will not do anything in the case of low iron levels. People often feel better well before this time, but to make changes on a deep level, it is best to give it 4 months. 36

artinzene/ Issue #10

health In regards to diets, I would be giving any new way of eating a minimum of 6-8 weeks before making a decision about it’s use for you. For example, an elimination diet will remove all the allergenic foods from your body, but you need to wait 6-8 weeks until you body clears out the allergenic complexes it has created in response to these allergen foods! Yes, you might be avoiding the guilty food item, but its immune complexes are still circulating in your body, in some places, causing symptoms. You may need to be 100% committed… Check with your practitioner about how strict you have to be with your new treatment. Is it really going to work if you give it a half-hearted go? Will one tablet per day work just as well as your recommended 3 per day? Often the answer is no, sorry. If you’re avoiding an allergen in your diet, for example, it needs to be out of your body 100% for at least 6-8 weeks. Even the tiniest bit of the offending item will have you back to square one, needing to start all over again. There is not point trying to judge a low allergen regime if you decide to have that allergen every now and again. The same goes with supplements. I know sometimes it is hard to take your supplements at the recommended dose, every day, but find out if you need to be strict for a certain period to gain the best effect. If your problem is only mild, the occasional missed dose may not matter, but in certain conditions, for example in detox, taking the supplements occasionally just won’t cut the mustard. The practitioner cannot always be 100% right first time… This is another reason to stick to a modality for a decent amount of time. All practitioners do their best to hit the nail on the head the first time round, but if they don’t (and this happens, we are not perfect), please make sure you go back, give feed back, and allow your practitioner to try again. ARTINZENE / Issue #10

39

health

I know it’s easy sometimes to think “Well that doesn’t work, I’m not going back there!” But the fact that the treatment has not worked, gives your practitioner a vital piece of information about what is really going on for you. They may very well hit the target the next time, due to the fact that the first time didn’t work. Be open and communicative… This is so important. Talk to your practitioner! Don’t be scared of giving them negative feedback. Never lie and say things are going better than they are. We learn from your experiences, so if everyone kept telling their praccies that such-and-such treatment worked ‘fine’ when really it didn’t, your praccie will keep recommending it to other clients. If you’re uncomfortable about giving negative feedback, send an email or a text. Our job is to help you, and we all try our absolute best to do that.

What is Chakra-Puncture? By Rosie Bason

Chakra puncture is a complementary healing modality that I have been receiving for over 7 years. As a practitioner, we don’t make claims on what it can or can’t do, but what I can share is my own personal experience. Chakra-Puncture is very gentle and I have found it to be super supportive with many of my life issues and health conditions. It helped me when I stopped smoking, and it was a great support when I gave up drinking. It was amazing after being in hospital and when I had nerve damage and I know it played a major effect on my fast recovery when I couldn’t walk for a while. Chakra puncture can be used in combination with medical issues if needed as it does not effect medication and is gentle and a great support in many different situations. I have personally seen a few of my friends with cancer really benefit with Chakra-Puncture during their chemo therapy sessions too, with their doctors telling them to keep doing whatever it is that they are doing. I have seen the results, and tested them myself and I have absolutely loved how I feel after each session so much so that I decided that I wanted to learn this modality so that I would be able to share it with others. So now, after completing over 250 practice hours, and a diploma in Chakra-Puncture, I am ready to offer my favorite modality to anyone who would like to experience it for themselves.

So What is Chakra-Puncture?

42

Chakra-Puncture is based on the science of the Nadis, which is the science of our living energetic cells. Our body has over 40,000 nadis which just shows how much we are energetic beings.

artinzene/ Issue #10

health The purpose of Chakra-Puncture is to restore the energetic harmonious balance and order to the energetic state of being and this in turn has an effect on the physical body. In a Chakra-Puncture session, you can remain clothed and just wear shorts and a singlet as the therapist can access most areas whilst you are dressed. The needles are placed very lightly and only really penetrate the very surface level of the skin and is painless. Chakra-Puncture is not acupuncture and does not follow and form of acupuncture training of methodology or philosophy. Unlike Traditional Chinese acupuncture, the Chakra-Puncture needles are very pliable and are specially developed needles that are tube delivered and are only inserted at a depth of about 0.2 to 0.5mm. A new needle is used each time, that is sterile and is only opened at the time of use. Rosie Bason: Woman of the world, sailed right around and now feel my feet firmly on the ground. I like writing, painting, taking photos and walking down the beach, as well as getting my hands in the dirt and watching my garden grow. I work full time, own a business, offer Chakra-Puncture, Massage and Esoteric Healing. I am raising a child and learning each and every day that it’s not about what we do, but who we truly are.

So safe, so good, come try it for yourself, if you are interested or want to know more, please call Rosie Bason on 0411 720 799. Chakra-Puncture sessions are available at the Byron Bay Wellbeing Centre in the heart of Byron Bay. ARTINZENE / Issue #10

Hormonal imbalances can occur at any stage in your life. While it is uncommon in children, it can occur from birth but it is more often found later in life. The deficiencies occur when hormones are not secreted correctly - either reduced or excess secretion. There are many causes, including – adrenal exhaustion, excess alcohol, eating disorders, excess painkillers or other drugs, poor diet, gland problems, ovulation disorders, obesity or anorexia. Hormones are secreted by various glands and organs including the thyroid. The whole endocrine system works together to make the level of hormones and if only one of these glands is imbalanced, it can cause widespread health problems. Relying on synthetic treatments can often lead to higher risks of stroke, anxiety and much, much more. • To restore balance, there are a few natural ways to help...Increase consumption of fresh

Linger a while. Soak in the atmosphere. You’re here. Stay here. Yes, really stay here. How difficult can that be? Hook your senses to this moment. Drink in the whole landscape with everything contained in it including yourself. Every space or location has a tone that is made up of a set of distinct and subtle sounds, vibration, fragrance and feel that evoke a presence. We too become present. Even for a moment. Just a moment. And then another one. A by-product of this experience is to become rested with a regaining of energy, and renewal of spirit. Through becoming mindful, the bodily systems calm down, breathe quality becomes deep and smooth, tension is eased/dropped and quietening of the emotions and mind occurs. We become refreshed! Restored through a moment by moment activity. One of my favourite refreshing activities is Tea. Not only the enjoyment of the actual divine leaf itself, but the engaging rituals that stimulate the opening, settling and deepening of self, and the opportunity to be present in this larger dimension with another - a shared immersion. It is also a form of meditation, an expression of beauty and tranquillity in each unfolding moment, a torchbearer of respect and peace, relaxation, lots of fun, enjoyment, and stimulus for creativity all rolled into one. It is also an alluring act of what the Danes call ‘hygge’, when one recognizes the feeling of when the ordinary feels extraordinary. How cool is that? ARTINZENE / Issue #10

47

health Let me share a little cameo about the leaf.

So, back to a moment.

Tea is the perfect vehicle for shifting gear from one state to another. Camellia Senesis (Tea) has a recorded history of over two thousand years ago, initially being used as a medicine, and then for keeping an alert yet calm focus for hours of meditation by monks. On the world stage, Tea has played a diverse role in the last couple of hundred years being the soother of upsets or sorrows, the muse to all of the Arts, to the shifting sands of political and economic upheavals, health superfood and social and cultural engagement mediator. Of course, it has also been a major timekeeper in our day, which we know as the ‘tea-break’. A good opportunity to be present with the cuppa and leave the digital devices alone.

Here we are in the beautiful coastal landscape of the most easterly point of this great Southern land. How can you and I go about exploring this environment, immerse in it, heighten awareness and become refreshed with whatever we partake to imbibe? As I mentioned, I am partial to a bit of ‘tea ceremony’, having done quite a few tea crawls through China, Japan and Taiwan. An idea to prepare for… the whales start waving at us in May…perhaps some tea picnics by the beach, the headland, and even on the rocks so we’re there to wave back. Enjoyment of being present and revelling in the ambience. Yeah, great plan. I’ll see ya there!

Lucia Light Healing What is the Lucia Light? Lucia Light is a lamp. A hypnagogic neuro-stimulator, with a low voltage central halogen light and 8 LED lights. A computer controls the intensity (brightness & dimness), combination and speed of the stroboscopic flickering lights. Each experience is very different. How does it work? Lucia supercharges the brain with light energy. The brain is able and known to heal the body, at any stage of illness. Light has played a central role in the treatment of various conditions e.g. mood disorders, insomnia, anxiety, depression, PTSD, tumours, compulsive and mental disorders. The range of applications is unlimited. Although Lucia does not claim to be a medical devise with the application of Light many conditions have shown significant improvement. Light Alchemy The Universe is all Light and Sound. All matter is fragments of Light. We are light beings with a body that is a transmitter and receiver of light energy. Light and consciousness reflect the dual nature of one and the same phenomenon. Light manifests as matter and energy. Consciousness, as body and mind. And just like light, consciousness thwarts any attempt to unveil its secret. Nobody knows the true nature of light or consciousness. At the climax of spiritual experience we again encounter light phenomena. 52

Awakening the Third Eye The pineal is a light receptor. A pea sized, crystalline, pine cone shaped structure, with rods and cones, in the centre of our brain. It regulates our hormonal, reproductive and sleep cycles. Dimethyltryptamine (DMT), a natural occurring psychedelic compound, is found in all living plants (peyote, mesclun, Ayahuasca, magic mushrooms) and mammals. Shamans and indigenous healers use these plants to reach a dimension of light consciousness, where all healing begins. DMT is naturally manufactured and released by the pineal gland, and is an integral part of our dreams, birth, death, psychic and visionary experiences. The pineal is believed to be the seat of the soul. The bridge to higher consciousness. Opening the 3rd eye is the key to awakening our psychic senses, allowing access to other realms and dimensions, and connecting to Spirit. In most adults, the pineal is calcified through fluoride in water, mercury in seafood, refined food, bromide, pesticides in food, sugar, alcohol, caffeine, tobacco etc. Bright light is believed to stimulate the release of DMT and awakens the pineal gland. Dr Rick Strassman M.D’s (The Spirit Molecule), 4 yr clinical study proved that DMT, consistently produced NDE’s and profound mystical, insightful, cathartic, healing experiences, in a supernatural light, to which shifts in consciousness were attributed.

Hormones

ByMarilyn Gunston

Hormonal imbalances can occur at any stage in your life. While it is uncommon in children, it can occur from birth but it is more often found later in life. The deficiencies occur when hormones are not secreted correctly either reduced or excess secretion. • To restore balance, there are a few natural ways to help...Increase consumption of fresh fruits, grains and vegetables. Select food free of chemicals • Take chemical free fish oil capsules and include Omega 3 rich foods such as chia, fish, pumpkin seeds and flax seeds (LSA is particularly well absorbed). Avoid Omega 6 oils such as canola, soy and peanut. • Maca root is beneficial, particularly in pure powder form, and is also rich in natural calcium. • Eat healthy fats such as coconut oil and avocado. • Adaptogen herbs are a class of herbs that promote hormone balance and protection...including Ashwaganda and Tulsi and the locally grown Moringa is showing great results • Vitamin D • Hormone balancing herbs including...Wild yam, Sage, shatavari, Vitex agnus castus, Smilax, Dong quai and Glycyrrhiza...these can be used transdermally in a Vitamin E base. • Exercise I have been a practising naturopath for over 30 years, having run my own, or worked in very busy clinics and health food stores here on the Gold Coast, Northern NSW, and Melbourne. Since returning permanently to Queensland, I have developed my own range of health food products including Cinn-man (with the strongest available Manuka honey), Vin-man, Witch Hazel, women’s organic skin care, DeFlamm (a natural antiinflammatory), Diatomaceous Earth, Iron Bark Plus+ (a natural, raw honey imbued with concentrated fruits and herbs rich in Iron, Vitamin C and Vitamin K), and a delicious raw cacao drink called Choco Less, made from all organic ingredients that actually helps with excess fat loss and tastes fantastic hot or cold. 54

Step Back into Australia's Working Class History By Brendan McMullan My two favourite things to do is explore Sydney and find abandoned buildings, Sundays are the best day for this. We have a awesome Ferry network that can take up and down the harbour to see some breath taking views and if you know where to look plenty of unused buildings giving you a slice of history of times gone bye. Sunday is the best day to go exploring because your public transport is capped at $2.50 for the whole day, including trains, buses and ferry’s so no excuse to get out and explore this amazing city. Cockatoo Island is a little known gem that sits in the harbour close to Balmain. The rich history and many uses make it an awesome island to explore. First established as a prison for convicts in 1839 to help alleviate the over crowded Gail on Norfolk Island and then in 1870 turning into an Industrial school for girls and finally its main purpose in early 1900’s turning into a Commonwealth Naval Dockyard where Australia’s first war ship was made and served as a ship building and repair centre all the way through world war 2.The island was documented in 1992 and sat dormant for many years until 2001 where The Sydney Harbour Federation Trust assumed control and underwent major restorations and reopen the island in 2007 to the public.

There are a few of the original buildings still sitting unused and abandoned on the island, the island is pretty big and takes a few hours to explore. A blend of the original convict settlement with the industrial warehouses gives you a unique time line on the island of which its uses changed over time. The best thing is that it is completely free to enter and a lot of the buildings are open and you can explore at your own leisure. The original tools and machines still sit there from the last day of work when they were once a busy factory turning out ship parts for the Navy. The whole island is literally a time warp of a way of life that many working class men and woman had to endure to make ends meet. You can imagine the sparks flying and the sounds of metal tools being used, but today its very quit place with 360 degree views of the harbour and its very relaxing, the occasional grown from the huge metal structure as you walk through the factories and the pop up coffee shops made out of shipping containers is a very eclectic place to stop and have lunch and a cuppa. The island caters for every one young and old, perfect for photographers looking to get some artistic shots and adults just wanting to explore and feel like a kid again. Its open every day and regular ferry’s come and go every 30 minutes from Circular key.

I grew up in Central West NSW in a small town called Orange. I’ve always had a passion for photography growing up and playing sports. Photography has always been away to express my self and I love taking portraits as its a great way to connect with people and capture a slice of the beauty in the every day. As I have retired from playing Rugby I have found another challenge in Yoga, mental and physical strength in one, giving back to my body from the years of impact sports. Photography is always an on going journey for me, the deeper I explore my self the deeper I connect with people and my surroundings around me, I hope my photography will help motivate people to get out and explore the world. Bali Is Changing Me

By Tessa Alexa Stanford

TRAVEL People ask me why I spontaneously moved to Bali. I reply “because my intuition told me too. It’s my answer to most things these days. Following my heart has transitioned from a taboo rebellious act into a natural, wildlyauthentic way-of-being. Of course, I must admit, there was one moment just before I got on the plane that I wondered whether I was running away. Was there something in my life in Australia that I was avoiding? I now know that I was not running away, I was running home.

TRAVEL

The truth is, Bali is changing me. It has been two months already and I know there will be many more months to come. The more I surrender to her, the more she guides me, holds me and nurtures me. She is reconnecting me to all that is, all that I am and all that I can be. She tells me she is here to provoke and deepen my trust, more than ever before. Herein, lies my success and happiness she says. I feel lighter, sparklier, shinier.

70

She lovingly holds me as I stumble around harnessing my own power like an infant learning to walk for the first time. Her energy raises me, meets me and allows me to fall and crumble when I’m not sure which way to go next.

TRAVEL

She is patient as I learn to come home to myself. She is compassionate as I learn to heal the deepest parts of me. She is magnificent. As I sit here today in deep reverence, I feel a profound inner joy surface from the very essence of my soul. A joy which has been suppressed, squandered and suffocated all my life from a little too many I-needto’s, I-have-to’s and I- should’s. She reminds me daily that there is nothing I need to do, nothing I have to do, nothing I should do. All is already done. I am here to be, to 71 ARTINZENE / Issue #10 feel, to experience.

TRAVEL

Trusting myself enough to trust this is, of course, both the inherent battle and the key to freedom. She is allowing me to truly understand that by following my excitement, my desire, my joy in every single moment, I will create the life and legacy I am here to create. There is no need to doubt, question or judge the path I’m on. My intuition will guide me home always. And just like that, in one magical moment of presence, I noticed how the vibrant red coffee cup placed perfectly in front of me matched my red fingernails, I sensed the sun’s warmth and light encompassing me, and I felt the familiar vibration of Coldplay’s “Yellow” move from the speaker and exquisitely through my cells.

TRAVEL

This pure joy exuding from my soul bursts through my physical form, and I laugh. I feel the immense beauty of life through me and I feel myself as the immense beauty of life. I observe myself as pure consciousness experiencing itself in physical form. I observe myself as oneness. I observe myself as Love. I am the most physically alone I’ve ever been and yet, I’ve never felt more connected. I’ve never felt less alone in my life. After all, they say aloneness is just our soul calling for all-one-ness. Have you felt the call deep in your soul to run home too?

The Malawi Adventure

By Steven Rufus

In 2014 I made a life changing journey to Africa, spending almost three weeks in Ethiopia. Along the way I visited Tanzania and Malawi, an experience that is dear to my heart. From Tanzania’s chaotic Dar es Salaam, with a population of 5-6 million and no trains, subways or overpasses, it took us 16 hours to travel 600 kilometres to Iringa. The traffic was crazy! I lost count of the accidents we witnessed.

TRAVEL We travelled west past massive sisal plantations (producing fibre for rope, baskets and mats); up into the Udzungwa Mountains; through boab forests and over the Great Ruaha River. Passing through towns and villages we saw women carting water on their heads, fires burning for cooking and shacks of all shapes and sizes. We eventually reached The Old Farm House, an English-run guest house with great amenities including hot water and the best hot chocolate in the world! The next morning we drove through lush forests and tea, corn, banana and vegetable plantations before crossing the border into Malawi and stopping at Chitimba Beach campsite, on the edge of Lake Malawi. This massive fresh water lake, which takes up twenty percent of the Malawi’s total area, could easily be mistaken for the ocean, stretching all the way to the horizon. Measuring 706 metres at its deepest point it is Africa’s second deepest lake and the third largest by area. Further south at Kande Beach we swam about 800 metres out to a small island where we snorkelled and played beach volleyball. Adults and children alike welcomed us, including a young man (whose hand was wrapped up from a snake bite) who showed us around his village and introduced us to local foods.

I picked up some carvings and paintings from some incredibly talented local artists who rely on selling their wares as their only source of income. As there is little wealth and few places to buy basic goods, the locals are keen to trade with visitors. I traded some shirts, sunnies, a pair of socks and a USB stick.

TRAVEL

On a morning stroll we had a taste of village life helping to unload fish from dug-out canoes and spending time with families as they washed clothes on the beach. I loved Malawi’s beauty and simplicity and I could easily disappear into village life. If you’d like to join me on my next tour to Ethiopia, please contact me: getrufus999@gmail.com
