Art Evolves A s We D o by Sacha Beverley - Artist

artinzene/ Issue #9
ART Creating art is an ever evolving process of self discovery! Whether intentional or not the style of most artists either gradually or spontaneously drifts, morphs and changes as the creator becomes more authentic and in touch with their true self. This has been increasingly evident for me over the past 6 years of finding my feet and my style as an artist and a woman. I’ve been on a journey of experimentation and creative exploration ‘trying on’ (so to speak) all different materials, techniques, surfaces, styles and subject matters, trying to find what ‘fits’ and what’s most comfortable for me. I have come to the conclusion that creating realism is like wearing a tight, itchy woollen jumper while creating abstract art is more like wearing a big, baggy cotton t-shirt…..and I’m a t-shirt girl! I’ve found that in order to be true to myself and my innate personality I need to create expressive, abstract art where I can switch off my brain and not think too much about the outcome of the painting. For me, abstract art removes the burden of perfectionism and gives me the greatest sense of freedom. It allows the painting to be what it will be, without trying to make it look like ‘something’. It’s been a learning process of quietening my own inner critic and letting go of the fear of making mistakes.

ART Another self-realisation is that I am often impatient, I lose interest quickly and jump from one thing to the next so I prefer to finish paintings quickly, instead of having them sitting around in my studio unfinished for months. Now when my creative inspiration strikes and the paint flows effortlessly and the artwork evolves easily, I allow myself to be ok with finishing quickly. I use the word ‘allow’ because it’s been a conscious decision and a permission slip I have had to write to myself. I used to think that ‘good’ art needed to take a long time to create and that if something could be created and finished in one painting session then it didn’t have any value. I have chosen to remind myself that all creative expression has enormous value and that the more I value myself, the more that I value my art. I’m learning to let go of my limiting beliefs and the negative mindset that was holding me back and be grateful for the times when beauty can be created in an instant.

ART This winter I spent the holidays with my partner’s family in Columbia, South Carolina. The matriarch of the Southern family had just passed and I attended the funeral with their small family. She loved the south and had no interest in two of her grand children relocating to Hawaii. In the climate of the tension between Standing Rock, a newly elected president and the great fear of the unknown and especially the helplessness in protecting our most precious resource - water. The disbelief, the frenzy, the outrage, the old outdated traditions…..and my muse Amy, saying good bye to her Granny, the South and about to venture thousands of miles away onto where new earth is being formed, the Big Island of Hawaii, there was nothing more sensible to do than to mark the passing of the old guard and to invoke the new earth at the local original water treatment station in central Columbia, with a statue of Columbus standing guard outside the building. We are the seeds that were planted in the 60’s, and these versions are still unfurling in a time of confusion, scarcity and the impending loss of our sacred natural resources. What can we do, but honor those that have gone before us, invented, created, failed, discovered, built, held up traditions, made break-throughs...how do we face our inherited demons? How do we escape this situation? How do we fight it? What will it take for a true inner revolution? ARTINZENE / Issue #9
33
Art Viva la revolution! May you enjoy this visual journey in the water plant, with the Congaree River along side us, honoring our grandmothers, our ancestors and invoking the truth and only the truth of what matters, what can create real change. We weave in and out of times, building new commitments and structures of miracles on a cellular level as we release the old. We honor the Goddess, we heal the waters with our loving attention and pray for the divine masculine to rise and protect our planet earth, and move from corporations to cooperation. What can we do? -Love ourselves (easier said than done) -forgive everyone including ourselves -Stop pleasing others out of fear we won’t be loved -spend time doing what brings you joy, make space for it -Affirm the divine masculine whenever you see it, celebrate it. Acknowledging it gives it more power. -Commune with nature, she will never lead you astray -Consider taking flower essences to help your emotional body. One energy I layered into the ethers with these images is Sensitive Plant, a detested weed here in Hawaii, yet a powerful plant medicine ally. I have made some tincture for the new year! It helps - Reduce the effects of toxic electro-magnetic radiation such as from cell phones, wi-fi, microwaves. - Helps balance diurnal cycles, assists in regulating melatonin production.

Why the mirror images in my pics? I just love it, because we all have two sides, which can be labeled infinitely - the yin and the yang. We have to embrace our paradox by holding them side by side, in neutrality. That which is awakening and dreaming and that which is held hostage by conformity, fear, survival, fitting in. That which wants to strive and be good and that which is a lazy scoundrel. These images hold the intention of holding both equally and not making one right r wrong, but holding the possibility of blossoming into a co-creative new world, by awakening the heart, by asking for support from those who have gone before us, opening to a greater wisdom to help guide us. We are saying good bye to the old ways, because we must. No shame in it, yet it takes compassion for our former selves and courage for our future self. In the new year, I went under a pine tree to console myself with my cold...I received a present under the tree, it whispered a line to me, reminding me of a phrase by Joe Dispenza, and this message unfurled itself. May this help you as we enter this year of the fire rooster:

Health Food As Medicine By Rhianna Smith
I’m a naturopath who really loves food as medicine. If I can avoid giving my patients a supplement and use a food instead, I will! In certain cases, supplements are necessary to encourage a return to optimal health, but as soon as the supplements have done their job, food as medicine can keep you there! I believe all natural wholefoods are medicinal. They nourish our bodies, provide us with the building blocks of all our cells, give us fuel for energy, and provide vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, and antioxidants in abundance. All natural foods give our bodies something special and unique, but there are a few foods out there that are really potent in their medicinal effect. For optimal health, I recommend having these foods regularly in your diet. Turmeric This is seriously a longevity food. Organic fresh turmeric or organic powdered turmeric is a potent anti-inflammatory, a powerful antioxidant, a liver detoxifier, a warming circulatory stimulant, and is used for healing, repair and for its anticancer properties. You really can’t go wrong including regular turmeric in your diet. 48

Many like to add a small knuckle of fresh turmeric to their juices or smoothies in the morning, while others add a pinch to warm water, lemon and raw honey to assist in detoxification and appetite building before breakfast. Powdered turmeric is used in many Indian and Ayurvedic recipes. Add turmeric to curries, soups and slow cooked meals. And don’t forget about delicious turmeric lattes! Green Tea This is another anticancer food item that has potent antioxidant properties. Green tea also helps modulate the metabolism, burn fat, detoxify the liver and keeps you looking younger! 2 cups per day of organic green tea gives you all you need to support general health. For those sensitive to caffeine, there are some organic decaffeinated varieties that you can enjoy without the caffeine kick. Just a note, green tea flavoured items, or bottled green tea does not have the same benefits as freshly brewed organic green tea. Always choose the closest option to nature- leaves in a bag is perfect! Coriander It’s interesting with coriander, people usually either love it or hate it. I’m lucky I love it because it has some awesome medicinal qualities. Coriander is a powerful liver detoxifier, and in fact, it has been shown to bind and remove heavy metals from the body. health Coriander is best eaten fresh. The dried variety is not nearly as potent. Add fresh leaves to Thai or Indian dishes, give salads a kick with some chopped coriander leaves, or juice it with celery, carrot and beetroot for an awesome healthy tonic. Fresh coriander is something to try growing at home. It is quite happy in a pot of well drained soil out of direct, harsh sunlight. Papaya I’m taking about red papaya, that delicious tropical sweet hit! Papaya is full of papain, enzymes that help with the breaking down of other foods. Often people take papain to improve their digestion, why not just a regular bowl of papaya when summer comes around? This is another many Australian may be able to grow at home. From mid to north NSW, all the way up to the top of Australia, papaya trees will happily grow in the backyard. To enjoy it’s medicinal benefits, papaya is best eaten alone, about 1-2 hours away from other food. Try having it as a morning or afternoon tea snack. Lemon The juice of this amazing fruit is acidic to the stomach, helping to increase hydrochloric acid levels when taken in a little water before meals, and then alkalising in the
body once absorbed. Lemon juice in warm water first thing of a morning can help stimulate liver detoxification and encourage a bowel movement. Many people add lemon to their fresh juices, to give them an alkalising hit (try a mix of watermelon juice and lemon juice- amazing!). Lemon can be used mixed with olive oil as a simple, healthy dressing on salads, and can be added to your drinking water to help encourage the body pH to become more alkaline. Just a word of warning though, lemon juice in water sipped throughout the day can reduce the enamel on teeth when taken long term. Cinnamon I love this herb! Cinnamon can help balance blood glucose levels, reduce blood fats, slow down gastric emptying for longer energy from foods and stop sweet cravings! It is fantastic for people with high cholesterol, diabetes, hypoglycemia, sugar cravings and cardiovascular disease. You may wish to add it to smoothies, sprinkle it over chia pudding or porridge or even fruit salad. Organic is definitely the best. Get more medicine out of your food. Your body will thank you!

All the Best Stories Start with Chocolate How does one become known as a Chocolate Wizard? Kyle Lazich, qualified Herbalist, healer/educator and founder of Superb Chocolate, shares his journey with Chocolate and passion for spreading Love and Chocolate around the world. The story begins when Kyle was first introduced to chocolate as a ‘sacred medicine’. Kyle was immediately entranced. He describes how he stopped experiencing chocolate as merely ‘chocolate’... and started experiencing it as life. Kyle’s passion for medicinal herbs had already seen him explore the world of sacred, wild-craft medicine through various cultures and some of the greatest healers. Yet all this time, Cacao (chocolate) had escaped his loving attention.
After awakening to chocolate as a sacred medicine, Kyle then fervently set out to learn everything he possibly could about the sacred cacao bean from long-lost Ancient Maya and Aztec wisdom. The ‘Chocolate Wizard’ was inspired from a meeting with a shaman back in 2014. He spent days upon days perfecting the art and science of chocolate making. He then decided to take it a step further, and began to fuse the undeniable-healingpotency of cacao with other powerful plant-based medicines to create mouth-watering therapeutic concoctions of Life. Life was forever changed for Kyle. His enchanted relationship with chocolate had unexpectedly transformed the relationship with himself into a delicious love affair. “Chocolate is a gateway to the subconscious. It gives a higher vibration to the emotions.”

Kyle describes how he began to understand himself more profoundly than ever before. He began to understand the deep chemical connection shared with plants, their mystical capacity to unlock our inner-wisdom, and the beautiful inter-connections between us all. Chocolate became a dream. A dream he could no longer keep secret. Although ‘chocolate’ was everywhere, Kyle knew people were missing the benefits of it’s true essence. “Chocolate has the ability to expand our hearts, open intuition to the divine, to ground us, and it is a sacramental plant medicine which has been used in Shamanic Meditations for centuries. Chocolate can align you with your pathway.” He believed if others could develop a deeper awareness of how to interact with the sacredness of chocolate, they too could truly experience the miracle this medicine has to offer. And so began the next chapter of the Chocolate Wizard’s adventure..
58
artinzene/ Issue #9
To share the deliciously-sacred, medicinalmiracle of chocolate with the world. Kyle made it his mission to seek and share the wisdom of this forgotten medicine. “With chocolate we can reconnect people to the earth. Chocolate, like plants, has its own message, that’s why the chocolate I make has its own ceremony and sacrament, intentions & mantras that are infused into it whilst I make it.” Follow the Chocolate Wizard on Facebook (Kyle Lazich) and Instagram (kyle_patrick_lazich) for updates on all Chocolate Workshops and Dance Parties. Inflammation, Aches & Pain ByMarilyn Gunston
Prescription anti-inflammatories have side effects particularly for gut health and long term use can be extremely detrimental to overall health. There are a number of natural foods and products that have benefits both for pain and digestive health. Try for organic if possible because you don’t want to be adding toxic chemicals into an already compromised body. Turmeric contains a compound called Curcumin. Research has found it to off many health benefits for Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue, Arthritis, Osteoporosis, digestive problems, cognitive dysfunction (brain power), eczema, liver and gall bladder function. It has long been used to treat inflammation and PAIN. Recent studies have found that capsules and tablets do NOT do nearly as good a job as the real powder. Supermarket quality is generally low in curcumin. Adding black pepper increases the bio-availabilty many times over. MSM (Methylsulfonyl methane) is a natural, organic form of sulphur, an essential element needed every day. Research on more than 12000 patients over 20 years confirms MSM can help many problems including arthritis, PMT, RSI, injuries, pain, rheumatism, IBS, indigestion, Lupus, alzheimers, brittle nails and lack of energy. MSM is important for maintaining the structure of body proteins. It can reduce pain and inflammation and muscle spasm. It is suitable for both humans and animals, and is used frequently on horses and dogs. Diatomaceous Earth is a natural, organic source of Silica and trace minerals. Often called DE, the Silica within it is the most important mineral for our bones. It promotes collagen production for bones, hair and skin while also regulating calcium levels in our bones to prevent osteoporosis. It can make joints feel much less painful and aids the self healing process. DE increases the ALKALINITY in out body, which is so important when dealing with arthritis and other acidic diseases. Sri Lankan cinnamon is the best and most effective real cinnamon (NOT CASSIA). Apart from assisting with balancing blood sugars and enhancing the immune system, it can improve blood flow to the joints...a common problem with arthritis. 62

The Healing Power of Nature By Kelly Rose When a day seems too hard, when a problem seems too big or when you’re thinking “When is this going to be over!”, just stop and take a look around you. Look outward. In the midst of those times, it’s easy to get caught up and think the whole world’s going to end. We’re all guilty of it when we are feeling upset or stressed. But looking outward, makes you realise how deeply you’ve been looking in; how cut off you have been from everything else going on around you. It reminds you how much time you’ve spent dwelling unnecessarily on the moments you couldn’t bear, but are already in the past. Looking out makes you see something other than you. Other people, plants, experiences, moments. You become reminded that you share this Earth- this universe- with trillions, upon trillions, upon trillions of living things, many of which have worse days than you, problems far more monumental than yours.
64
artinzene/ Issue #9
Looking out, you can see how big the sky is. Rain falls from it, that turn into floods which can wipe whole cities away. You can see the trees, some that have lived for centuries, and will live on after you’re gone. You can see the sun, as a small disc in the sky; when really we are but a spec, compared to it’s greatness.
health
Some of the mightiest things in the universe have survived far greater obstacles than we will ever know. And then, when what you are facing comes in to focus, things will be put into perspective and maybe, just maybe, the world won’t end after all.
Kelly is the writer behind The Real Health Collective, a series of lovingly documented thoughts, experiences and lessons learnt on a pursuit to personal health; which she soon found was simply a staircase to a pursuit much more important and much more meaningful - the pursuit to resurrect collective health. 65 ARTINZENE / Issue #9

My Vulnerability Battle
Between Science & Spirituality
By Tessa Alexa Stanford 66
artinzene/ Issue #9
health When I spontaneously quit my psychology career last year, I remember someone saying “You’re off on a journey to enlightenment” I was like “Pfffft, you’ve got to be kidding.” It actually made me kinda angry; I got defensive. Enlightenment was definitely not on the agenda. Back then, I equated enlightenment to monks praying in a temple for days on end. No way, ho-say! Not for me. I wanted fun, adventure, and to transform our perception of emotional-expression from weakness to strength. I wanted to change the world with vulnerability. HA! The universe had other plans. After five years of statistics and evidenced-based research during my psychology degree and nutritional medicine studies, Science had become my expert in Truth. Yet, as soon as I left on my journey to ‘change the world’, my catfight with Spirituality began. The more I tried to fight Spirituality off, the more powerful it’s lessons became. I used to tell people that signs don’t exist. I would preach science and rationality. If we couldn’t see it, test it or gather reliable evidence to confirm its existence, then in my books, it didn’t exist. I dismissed anyone who I perceived to be too hippie or spiritual, and I laughed at anyone who believed in aliens or spoke to the ghost of their dead grandma. I even remember scoffing at my great aunty at Christmas once because she said her mood was affected by the moon. I told her astrology wasn’t real. Now I own a lunar diary. Now the moon and stars are some of my greatest teachers. Now people think I’m “crazy”. Now I teach others about enlightenment and the ascension process. Now I’m known to many as a spiritual teacher. Hold on...! What? I resigned from my career in psychology to change the world with vulnerability. Yet I naively had not expected it would be my own vulnerability that would lead to the profound changes in my perception which would enable me to transform the world with my teaching. ARTINZENE / Issue #9
67
I have invented myself and reinvented myself. And even though I know deep down it is my truth, coming out of the ‘spiritual closet’ has been one of my greatest obstacles. I’ve fought inner-demons I didn’t know existed. I’ve been in a constant duel between my human self and my higher self. I’ve burned the version of myself I knew to be ‘true’ to the ground. Again and again and again. I’ve allowed the fear of being seen as crazy, and the desire to avoid the intensely painful feelings of loneliness and disconnection, to prevent me from speaking my truth on multiple occasions. With Vulnerability by my side, pockets full of purpose and courage embedded in my soul, I am here to reinvent myself again. I now believe we are in a new era where science and spirituality become lovers. (Or at least really good friends.) Thanks to vulnerability, I now understand the ‘how’ behind my dreamy desire to create meaningful change in the lives of millions. Are you limiting yourself with labels, boxes, or dusty old limiting beliefs that no longer serve you? What would happen if you allowed vulnerability to spend a little more time with you? In The Slow By Jude McColm
When’s the last time you stopped, and really took stock of your accomplishments? Was it your last emotional/mental or physical breakdown? Probably not. You were too sick, tired, exhausted or in pain, to really take it in! The Earth moves slowly. Have you ever noticed? We humans, are the most driven mob of animals on the planet. Rushing for this, aiming for that. Exhausting every possible opportunity, in our thirst for more. We even strive for our peace! What’s happened to the calm time for reflection and acknowledgement? I’m too busy, I’m running late, I just have to finish this proposal/work task/event!

It’s in the NOT DOING where the muse arrives. It’s in the NOT DOING where the joy lies. It’s in the NOT DOING where you finally take stock of everything you’ve come to be, and everything you’ve worked so hard to achieve. It’s in the slow where ideas are processed, learning is opened and where the light triggers the flow. Synchronicities appear. Receptivity is abundant and headaches disappear.

health Ideas for creating and finding your slow: Let Go Where are you pushing the most? Where have you been striving so hard you can nearly taste the victory lap? This is where the slow is needed to most. STOP. Breathe. Let go. Allow all your hard work to be felt, infused and acknowledged. Yes, you’ve worked hard. You’ve pushed yourself to the limit and YES, you’ll be rewarded. Let go of the outcome. You’ve done everything you can to create your masterpiece, now let the cosmos take the reins. Have a cup of tea. A laugh with a friend. A night out dancing! Surprise your flame with a naughty love bite. Come back into your body and prepare to receive. Be Consistent Be consistent, not erratic. Slow thoughtful consistent action, delivered over a long period of time, will always create long term effects. Remember the tortoise and the hare?? Fill your days with the little pieces of the puzzle. The small heart-felt increments of love, that build to grace your life. Creation takes time, dedication and an unwavering commitment to yourself and your contribution to the world. Pull back in, breathe, and take consistent meaningful steps towards your greatness. Create your vision Hello overwhelm!! Overwhelm is the result of too much on the plate and NO VISION. How can you make decisions that support you when you don’t know where you’re going? You can’t. You take on too much. You say yes, when you should be saying no. You agree to projects that don’t feel right, and your energy starts to quiver and slide. Stretch yourself. Look out to three years. Slow down, go to the beach, breathe, and sketch your vision. • Picture a world of your creation... What do you see, who’s there, how do you feel? • What do you stand for, your essence, your groove, what do you bring to the world? • Where’s the bridge, where does your vision meet your reality?

Your vision gives you bearings. It helps you get clear on what you want. If you don’t know what you want, you’ll end up receiving what someone else wants. Clarity equals power. Slow down and take the time to design your next three years. November 2019 will come around, wouldn’t be awesome if YOU designed what it looked like for you?

The Stop DOING List The Stop Doing list is an idea I learned from Danielle La Porte, and I’m so grateful I stopped long enough to listen. Are you doing things that deflate you, drain you and exhaust you? Where in your life can you ask for assistance, hire help or just stop doing it! As a girl from a split family, I grew up watching my mum DO everything. She worked, she cleaned, she cooked, she created, she cried and she danced. There’s a massive part of me that calls to that way of living. There’s guilt attached to the thought that I can’t do everything. I SHOULD be able to do everything. Cook, clean, love, care, support, create, dance, evolve. But, there comes a time when it’s important to say “No more”. As Danielle says, “if you resent something you’re doing, the resentment won’t go away. It’s time to stop doing it, breathe a sigh of relief, and do what creates more joy in your life”. Write a list of all the things you do, that drain you, that you don’t enjoy, that you resent. Find a way to stop doing one of them this week. Just one. Feel the empowerment of letting go and choosing joy over suffering.

Write Yes, you have something to say. Write it out. Write down your fears, your joys, your awesome wins and your fabulous failures. Jot down your nightly dreams and intuitive inspirations. Clear your mental blah. Get it out of your head! Clear the space for new ideas, new innovations and new inspirations. Mental clutter consumes energy. It takes up precious space holding you back from living your vision. Old belief structures and old painful experiences, retrigger patterns of behaviour. Set your intention to clear your mind and write for yourself with love. Take time for your body Your body carries messages, pain and experiences. Energy gets stored in all the nooks and crannies of your joints, mussels, fibres and cells. It’s time to call on your most trusted body therapist for nourishment and support. It could be a massage, reiki treatment, physio appointment or private yoga session. Choose your groove and choose it regularly. Therapists are healers. Allow their magic to lift old wounds and create space, where space is needed. The slow gently lifts sad moods, allows reflection and grace to open, and connects you to the universal energy that wants our best and brightest selves at the forefront of who we are. Drink water. Watch the trees bend in the wind. Feel the light breeze touch your skin. And remember what it took for you to get here. The sweat, the tears, the love, the passion. You’re the most perfect reflection of all your past experiences rolled into one unique vibrant vessel of love. Its time of honour your courage, and embody the new vibration that is YOU today.

What would it mean to you, to finally clarify exactly want you want? To be crystal clear on where you want your life to go, and what you want to achieve? How much time are you currently wasting not knowing what you want? A Life Coach is not a mentor or a counsellor. Your coach will not tell you what you need, nor will they advise you on what to do. Your coach will inspire you, encourage you and motivate you to take action on the goals YOU set. They’ll question your motives and encourage you to speak your truth. They’ll hold you accountable to your decisions and encourage you to take ownership over your dreams. Above all, your coach will help you find clarity. Clarity equal power. Focused clarity, will allow you to do more, in less time. Succeed quicker and feel more fulfilled, all on YOUR terms. Cairo/Egypt A Dream Come True By Brendan McMullan Seeing the Pyramids at Giza was a childhood dream come true. The magic of their very existence has always fascinated me and finally I can tick it off the bucket list. The most famous Pyramid is the Pyramid of Giza found on the out skirts of Cairo and is deemed one of the ancient wonders of the world and for good reason. Arriving in Cairo I wasn’t sure what to expect the city is very diverse, A modern city coming into the 21st century battling the elements of the desert which makes it impossible to keep clean and seems to leave a dark stain on all the old imperial buildings from a time gone past. The architecture is very grand and would have been impressive in its time but the old buildings have not been maintained and the city seems to be in disrepair. If your planning to visit Egypt you have to make the decision on either staying in Cairo for a couple of days and just seeing the pyramids or spending a few weeks visiting other historical sights such as Valley of the Kings in Luxor about 6 hours drive south of Cairo where Indian

TRAVEL Jones was filmed or head 2 hours north to the beautiful beaches of Alexandria. You can easily book tours from your accommodation and they there is lots of different options based on your budget. After speaking to local tour guides i released very quickly how much I didn’t actually know about this rich ancient culture and the amount of historical land marks found in Egypt,But I normally like to learn things first hand and not out of a book so I would have to make up for lost time. We where told the best way to explore the pyramids was to do a camel tour around the 14 km squared national park,I use the term national park very lightly as there has been no investment in the park except a fence around the parameter to keep free loading tourist out.Non the less the camel ride was pretty fun a little touristy for my liking but non the less. The approach was pretty spectacular with the back drop of the dessert but is some what spoilt by the proximity of the local housed built pretty much on the door step of the Sphinx. Going into the Pyramids was my favorite part climbing down a small narrow walk way then into the space of what used to be a tomb was pretty surreal. The first thing you notice is the temperature drop from the heat out side to cool pleasant conditions underground. The walls are lined with thousands of hieroglyphics which are ancient inscriptions of the lives of kings and queens which used to rule the land. You don’t need to understand what they say to get a real feel for the culture.Standing looking at this art work makes you wonder what life would have been like and how advance this culture was to create something so grand, and so well built to last the test of time. Its like your in a time warp just for a moment.

TRAVEL Inspired by a charity challenge to raise $10,000 for the Hamlin Fistula foundation and the love of adventure Ethiopia was a must, through a series of synchronicities and events this fundraiser was also the birth of our now popular Sound Healing group ‘Conscious Vibes’. Day one getting acquainted with each other and the busy capital of Addis Abba, like most cities there’s a mix of class and wealth and poorest of the poor, there is a larger percentage of the poor and destitute than we are used to in western countries but the smiles and spirit of these people was alive and well.

TRAVEL First up was a visit to the Hamlin Fistula Hospital, we were treated to a full traditional lunch on the grounds amongst the beautiful hospital gardens, mostly planted by Catherine herself. The adventures begin. A short flight south to Arba Minch, greeted by 4 land cruiser wagons transferring us to our accommodation.. wow. Stylish stone villas amongst lush surrounds overlooking the ancient forest and Lake Abaya surrounded by mountains. From here we drove the winding mountain track to visit the beautiful Dorzy village set the green lush surrounds, the elderly can be seen tending to their gardens, weaving cotton and sewing as young children wave, smile and play, this remaining my favourite places. The locals demonstrated how they make their ‘bread’ from fermented fake banana tree flesh and cooked for us in their small traditional woven hut housing the entire family and cows under one roof! Next, we took the spectacular scenic 7hr drive up to Jinka, stopping on our way to visit the Konso tribal village, a remarkable world heritage area known for its rock wall ‘terraces’ landscaped in mountains as far as the eye can see. The village walls were also stone with timber archways and small huts, the people were lovely and a photo could be had at a small price. Their fascinating culture is still present today with very little influence from the outside world. Our voyage took us through Turmi, Koricho, Konso, Yirgalem and back to Addis Abba visiting the many unique and cultural rich villages on the way. The beauty and magnificence of Ethiopia and her people cannot possibly be conveyed in this short article. Come and experience yourself later this year on our group tour; please connect for more info.
