"The Art of Madzinga" Written by Michelle Ward & Madzinga
6
artinzene/ Issue #14
ART
I first came across Madzinga’s artwork in a café in Palm Beach where I was also exhibiting about 5 years ago. I immediately loved his quirky colourful fun textured style depicting Combi Vans, African Animals and people enjoying life. I later also went to an exhibition of his at the Dust Temple in Currumbin where he had a lot of much larger paintings on display which were also very impressive.
“My name is Madzinga I was born on in Bulawayo, in Zimbabwe. All of my life I have been involved in the arts which has been my pathway, to directly engage with other’s in the community. I began painting at the age of six, encouraged by my father who was a painter and recognized my talent. How my inspiration begin when I was very little I used to watch my father draw and paint a lot, so from watching my father I fell in love with colour.
It was about 3 years later that I ended up working alongside Madzinga on the set of Thor Raganok in the sculpting department. We became friends and since then I have photographed his clothing line and been to his most recent art exhibition at the Treeview Gallery on Mt Tamborine where he was live painting during the opening.
One day my father was not in his studio and I had an opportunity to paint a painting, but I couldn’t paint like my father painted as didn’t know much about paint, so I moved to the wall and I really messed up the walls. I painted a very big abstract painting on the walls which got me in a lot of trouble with my father.

Art
When I had finished painting my painting, my father discovered it and he was very angry with me painting on the walls. I asked forgiveness and I was forgiven. So this how it all begin for me. As soon as I could draw better and paint I was introduced to the National Art Gallery in Bulawayo where I had an intimate relationship between interpreting art and making art and here is where I developed my appreciation for fine art. The National Art Gallery in Bulawayo’s collection offered hundreds of ideas made manifest through material means. If people were to have a meaningful encounter with these works, we needed to know how to look at and interpret them to engage with these ideas. So from this program at the gallery I was trained to think visually and to understand how to encounter a work of art. How colour can make life and living more enjoyable and happy. How to use colour to share stories of my culture and how colours are known to have an effect on the community. I also learnt that colour can greatly assist people with brain disorders, emotional and behavioural problems, mental health issues, learning or physical disabilities, lifelimiting conditions, brain- injury or neurological conditions and physical illness.

Art I also discovered the knowledge that light enters through our eyes, however it’s important to note that light can also enter through our skin. Given the unique frequencies and vibrations of various colours, people believe that certain colours entering the body can activate hormones causing chemical reactions within the body, then influencing emotion and enabling the body to heal.
an understanding of how to activate hormones which will cause a chemical reaction within the anyone who sees my painting. My paintings have been inspired by the different lifestyles my culture, how I lived in my childhood and experienced life living the city and my life in the village where there was a lot of storytelling and myths of knowledge passed onto us by our elderly.
This knowledge made me want to serve the community, people with developmental, physical and emotional disabilities, as well as individuals, children, young people, adults, the elderly, couples, families and groups using the unique frequencies and vibrations of various colours through my art work and other forms of creativity.
Life in the city offers adventure, variety, culture, diversity, economic, social networking with a business district which has a trendy shopping mall, several modern architecture buildings, bars, coffee shops, markets, banks, international hotels and restaurants. All these different lifestyles offered me hundreds of ideas which have manifested throughout my paintings.
I was enrolled at the National Art Gallery in Bulawayo program until I finished high school and then when I finished high school I enrolled at the Mzilikazi Art and Craft Centre where I was further educated by the next generation of thinkers with quality arts education, like identifying and understanding colour. Knowledge in the arts education and advancing philanthropy and that art media as its primary mode of communication . This was a life changing moment for me finding out the effects of colour therapy and healing also known as chromotherapy or light therapy is a type of holistic healing that uses the visible spectrum of light and colour to affect a person’s mood and physical or mental health. Each colour falls into a specific frequency and vibration, which many believe contribute to specific properties that can be used to affect the energy and frequencies within our bodies. So, within my paintings I express myself, motivate, inspire, educate and tell a story. I now have 10

Some of my paintings show how people experience life‘s challenges and also people living in the village,’ what they face through their life in this community. Things like services and equitable access to opportunities is a big problem for the community living in the village. In the village most people make a living throw framing, selling fire-wood and the community around is vibrant with generations-old African customs and traditions which are alive and well which makes the village community the friendliest and the happiest you will find anywhere. It’s an was educational experience for local and other people who visit to witness life day-to-day in a rural village environment and some of my paintings show life in the city currently, that there is a large gap between needed and current services and infrastructure. One result of this gap is most people are not employed therefore they have to hustle to make a living, so these people can’t afford to buy house crisis. This produces slums, often near expensive gated communities and suburbs.

Art In my art works you can see a lot of colour movement, outlines—called contour lines—to define the figures and shapes in his paintings. So, I focus on the emotional quality of the scene and I take some time to study the poses or figures of the environment around me that I might best express that feeling I am feeling through colour. “ “I’ve named my style of art Madzinga Art because this is me,” he said confidently. “I have my mentors, like Monet, Picasso, Van Gogh, Da Vinci, and I’ve fused what they’ve taught us into one.” “It’s not like I hate reality but this takes me to my own planet,” he said. “If I can use the word ‘evolution,’ I evolve to a different consciousness and there I get to see things which very few people can see. So I get to translate them onto the canvas so the viewer—the beholder—will get to experience that moment when I have finished.” I would like to thank Hilltop on Tambourine, Mikztrikz. DJAntman, Desire Beauty Salon, Creative Soul Café, National Gallery in Bulawayo and Michelle Ward very much for your support and hope you enjoy the MadzingaArt Biography: Madzinga was born on the 15th of January 1985 in Bulawayo, in the Math South region of Zimbabwe. He began painting at the age of six, encouraged by his father who was a painter and recognized his talent. Soon he was introduced to the National Art Gallery in Bulawayo, where Jonathon developed his appreciation for fine art. He received tertiary art training at the Mzilikazi Art and Craft Centre, and was a resident artist at the National Gallery of Bulawayo. Since 2002 Madzinga has exhibited in Zimbabwe, Botswana, South Africa, The Netherlands, UK, Dubai, Canada, USA, and Australia. Art is expected to be original, unique.
"Artful Sounds" Written by Leif Morris
Never a copy, or an all too familiar. So why do not feel the same towards music? Why does copying another person’s music seem to be not only be accepted, but heralded? How must the songwriters feel, knowing each night, their pieces of art, are being sold cheaply as a commodity to any who will pay and for any price, if not free. Is music deemed lesser than art? A place for the immoral to run rampant, to copy and steal at will? Surely the art form of song writing is deserving of more, than to be washed down the streets as last drinks are called? What of the artists? What of those willing to expose their vulnerabilities, bear their souls and not hide behind the oh so safe, covers? Where shall the artists play? Who will listen to their calls? What of the joy of discovering a new song, story, singer and sound? Have we forgotten the songwriters, in our fervour to be entertained? Despite the cost? Maybe it’s time we remembered that feeling of connection we experienced, the first time we heard, we felt, the artist.

"Finding Her Power"
Art
Written by Louise Moriarty She had searched her whole life. It was only now that she was beginning to navigate her own intuition. Life was hers, offering her all the answers‌‌ Most days! Letting mind take over, had led her down too many dark alleys. How to be herself. Amplify what was her own innate genius. There were still days where she woke up so down on herself for not walking her talk, not being able to demonstrate the love she so desperately desired. Such a pressure from herself to be the powerful example she knew she was capable of. It was on one of these days that her expectations for herself put so much pressure on her, that she was pinned to her bed. Pissed off that she had reached for porn last night. It amplified her feelings, that sense of relief, that only answered momentarily, then sunk her back into a disappointed mind that always wanted more. She decided coffee was not enough. She was not even conscious during the ritual of making it, Just another routine in a day designed to create enough signifiers that she was doing okay. She heard the cockatoos out at the lake and decided to head out of the house, its walls suffocating her into a false sense of things being in their place. Too many things on her list of things to do, to make her feel whole, complete. As she opened the back door, immediately she came upon the bush turkey, its presence in her garden a constant menace to new growth, and yet, her own need to give it all away, represented in its medicine. 18
artinzene/ Issue #14
She remembered how many times when relationships had run their course, the bird had appeared: cleared the garden, dug the dirt, ready for new plantings. Her coffee finished ,she left the cup behind the rock ,and followed its path down towards the park, to see if new seeds could be found. To her surprise she found someone painting, and the woman was painting a bush turkey. Walking out and trusting what nature had put on her path, willed her own synchronicity and reminded her of what she loved to do when she felt free. The woman told her she worked with a friend, a shamanic sage, a poet, who could pinpoint the essence of your animal dreaming in words. Together they could create an art work that was a spirit reading and a healing painting of affirmation of the power of your animal totem. An artwork that would continue to inspire you to start your day in your power. Awake and conscious. She knew she wanted this for both herself and a friend. When she received the artwork her power was illuminated. In few words so much was revealed and clarified. Areas where she had felt stuck seemed to slide away, her essence acknowledged and uplifted. So much power awakened. Motivated and inspired she leapt forward into her life with her animal totem ,her constant ally.

ART Louise Moriarty has been writing personalised poetry portraits that amplify your essence and empower your evolution for over 10 years. She has written over 8500 poems for people that continue to inspire them to recognise and strengthen their innate genius. She does her ‘Stepping Stone’ work with you that allows you to move from places you feel stuck to places you are free to be more of yourself. 0417 830 040 louise.m66@bigpond.com www.wonderfilledworld.com
Poem: L Moriarty
Michelle Ward has been creating evocative imagery since she was 5 years old. Throughout her life she has been developing her own intuitive connection with the spirit world. She imbues her painting and artwork with colour that moves you through healing. Her background in natural therapies, including energy healing, body work, reiki are all alchemised into her artistic expression. Her works are art therapies and enable you to tap into your own creative potential and express your inner essence. Together they create cherished totem animal paintings, with poetry that is a channelled spirit reading that lasts a lifetime. Be surprised by what animals enters your awareness and the significance of it for you. Artinzene Michella

Why I Love
Transformational Festivals by Matiu Te Huki When I first stepped into the music scene as an 18 year old living in the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island I was playing cover songs in pubs to drunk people (often as a drunk person) and it was a lot of fun. Apart from struggling to breathe whilst singing as smoking indoors was still happening in those days, I was happily getting paid to party. It was free drinks, beautiful women and usually an after party to indulge in where there were more free drinks and even prettier women. Now, a couple decades and 3 sons later, that scene does absolutely nothing for me at all.

Nowadays my favourite music scene is an alcohol free, week long (or at least 3 days) outdoor music festival. Why? Firstly, because I love playing music for and with people who are there for the music not the alcohol. I love playing on expansive booming stages where people are able to fully express themselves through dance and movement and appreciate the music vibes we are sharing and really hear the lryics. I have come a long way since playing in the pokey corners of bars whilst people were often shouting their conversations over the music, spilling their drinks on the dance floor and were consumed by pokie machines oblivious to the musician playing. A good music festival offers so much to me as a growing man. Firstly I love feeling called to show up as a certain type of man at these gatherings. I love holding space for the women to feel safe to flow. Acknowledging the men for their conscious presence and therefore role-modelling this behaviour. I love connecting with the brothers, learning from them, standing strong with them as we look out for the village around us.

Art I love the opportunity to share my musical gifts, often inviting other artists to collaborate on my sets and also being invited to jump up with other amazing musicians.
I love sharing my haka/masculine-feminine workshops. Going deep in a short amount of time with open souls and witnessing the positive effects these musical and workshop offerings have on people. I love to dance my arse off for hours on end. Connecting with people on the dance floor. I love finding the best food stalls to eat at, and love feeling called to shine and carrying that feeling with me long after the festival ends. I love the opportunity to share my Maori heritage through my offerings ,keeping the culture alive and helping people to connect deeper to spirit, land, ancestors and each other . I love the long, oxytocin releasing hugs! And yes I love being around so many beautiful, blooming, dancing women for the mutual loving acknowledgements, mutual seeing and being seen and the often exquisite energy exchanges.

ART Here is a list of my top ten Transformational festival survival tips. Note they are coming from a musician/workshop facilitators view point but I hope someone can get something out of them. 1. Take care of your health, keep yourself safe, even when its party time! 2. Take care of your gear. 3. Ration all your resources to last the distance ($, clean clothes, food, energy, medicines, etc) 4. Be extra nice to security people, festival crew, sound and lighting crew, food providers etc 5. Hug everyone, not just the pretty young women. 6. Do some stretches each day (extreme dancing and foreign beds can be rough on the body after a few days.) 7. If you can, turn up with a method of generating $ while there. For me its selling albums, for others its selling hand made jewelry, selling homemade chai, massages..... Being at a festival without $ isn’t as much fun as having $ for that late night chai and bliss ball or that must have clothing item for your partner who’s holding the fort at home. 8. Keep track of time and do your best to plan your day so you can maximise the music and workshops and try something new each time.

Type 2 Diabetes, Blood Sugar Imbalance & Cinnamon By Rhianna Smith Over the last 30 years, obesity has become a modern day epidemic in western society, and increasingly around the globe. In Australia, more and more people are finding themselves with blood glucose imbalances, which threaten insulin resistance and the development of type 2 diabetes. In 2015, 16,400 Australians died due to diabetes, with more than 55% of these incidences being in cases of type 2 diabetes. The overall population percentage has risen from 1.5% to 4.7% with the onset occurring in younger and younger individuals. The scariest part is that for the majority of people, this disease is preventable as well as treatable, or at the very least, manageable, with simple diet and lifestyle changes. Type 2 Diabetes, or “lifestyle induced diabetes, is a relatively common occurrence in populations all over the world that enjoy an affluent lifestyle, but depending on the population, it can be can be seen as a disease of the rich (in poorer countries) or a disease of the poor (in richer countries).

health The disease is often related to central obesity (weight around the tummy), high blood pressure, high blood fats (triglycerides), and low good cholesterol (low HDL). Complications from this disease if not well managed include a reduced life expectancy, vascular disease, coronary artery disease, stroke, and death. Insulin resistance means the body has a less than optimal response of insulin sensitive tissue to insulin. This resistance to insulin results in a resistance to the metabolism of sugars and fats. The pancreas still secretes normal or increased levels of insulin but the tissues are insensitive and often unable to respond normally. It has been shown that diet and exercise have a significant effect in deferring the onset of type 2 diabetes, in people with impaired glucose tolerance. If the disease has already been established, it can be reversed (if temporarily) through diet therapy alone in many cases. A healthy diet high in fresh fruit and vegetables, plant based diets, regular exercise, low processed foods, and a low sugar intake will all go a long way in the prevention of this disease and its precursor issues. In regards to simple naturopathic medicine, studies have shown that a certain species of cinnamon, Cinnamomum cassia, has been used in low levels to reduce diabetes markers such as HbA1C, serum glucose, triglycerides, LDL (bad) cholesterol, total cholesterol, and blood glucose levels. Other studies show that the use of this type of cinnamon WITH diabetic medication has shown improvements in all these areas as well. The general dosage used in these clinical trials was between 3 and 6 grams per day- ½ to a full teaspoon. The studies showed positive results after an average of 4 weeks of treatment. The lack of interaction with medication and the lack of side effects promotes cinnamon as a beneficial food as medicine for all people suffering from, and in the prevention of type 2 diabetes. So grab the cinnamon, sprinkle it on oats, pop it in smoothies, in bliss balls, or if you don’t like the taste, pop it in a capsule and swallow it down. Cinnamon alone may not make a significant difference if diet and exercise are less than optimal, it is important to remember that natural medicine promotes wholism; treating the whole. But, along with a healthy diet and moderate exercise, cinnamon (the cassia variety) may be a cost effective natural food to include in the diet, with significant health benefits!

Shamanic Breathwork By Sharnee Horwood
Shamanic Breathwork is a transformative conscious connected breathing technique, incorporation breath, sound and movement to release old traumas, conditioning and negative patterns out of the cellular body, which then creates a sense of expansion and harmony within the spirit. This process cleanses all the layers of the body. Physically, we alkalise and oxygenate the body allowing for detoxification to occur, emotionally we clear stuck energy and repressed feelings creating the space for joy and balance into our lives, mentally we let go of negative habitual patterns and addictions that are no longer serving us and spiritually we open our awareness and consciousness to connect us to the deepest parts of ourselves and the universe as a whole. Each person’s shamanic journey is a highly individualized process and no two are ever the same. Some of the states of consciousness range from otherworldly bliss states to powerful energetic releases, clearing negative forces in the psyche. Rebirthing is a common occurrence, as is the life review where one relives or observes their lifetime experiences. Old patterns of dysfunction may be brought to the surface. Addictions are sometimes healed during this process, as feelings such as grief, fear, rage and anxiety are released.

Linger A While By Leif Morris While the Gold Coast is well known for it’s sparkling blue water and golden sandy beaches, just beyond the lazy beach days and bright lights, lies a piece of paradise that just may make you want to stay that little bit longer. “Linger A While” mountain chalet, is nestled in the artisan filled village of Mt Tambourine, a short drive up the escarpment from the coast. One can’t help but feels like time has gone by and left this homely place to breathe a little deeper and move a little slower, a welcomed reprieve from the hustle and bustle, off the mountain. Upon turning the car off the highway and heading up into the hills, the sense of connection with nature is hard to avoid. The greenery of the forest welcomes all, filling the lungs with that pure clean air that only the mountain air can bring.

An easy place to find, a private driveway hidden off the main street of the village, the chalet offers soothing tranquility the moment you’ve left your car. The lush green forest canopy embraces you into the scene, and reminds you that this is a place to turn off your phone, and take your time, there’s no rush. The all timber walkway, leading to the chalet, gives an exotic feel, akin to a place you may have been overseas, or from memory of adventure, a feeling of being transported from time, and now really is all that matters. Once opened, using the easy to access keys in the lockbox, its clear this is a slice of heaven that you will not be leaving in a hurry. Beautifully accented, the modern chalet feels like a 5 star abode, complete with welcoming chocolates on the cloud like king size canopy bed, a reminder of a time gone by, think Arabian nights. Well before bed time though, you will want to rest your bones in the oh so perfect sized hot tub. A quiet glass of your favourite wine, candles lit, and you’re floating on thin mountain air.

While you will most likely want to enjoy the local restaurants, all the options of the kitchen are waiting for your culinary creations. Add the gas fireplace, air conditioning, tv, dvd and radio, well, you really can stay in and do a whole lot of nothing, which is really something. Walking the street, taking in the local art gallaries, boutique shops and cafes, it really is hard to imagine how close this other world is to the Gold Coast. The nearby hikes to waterfalls are a feature of the area, and a good way to really get a feel for the mountain, and not too long or strenuous for the relaxing day hiker. All in all, after a visit to this charming village, and chalet of bliss, it really was hard not to book another night or two, but wait, someone’s beaten us to it. We left feeling so refreshed, it was hard to believe it was only one night, what a magical little secret that is Mt Tambourine. Don’t linger, to book yourself some peace of being and add a dash of romance to your life, we will be back, soon.

TRAVEL
A Walk in Seattle By Leif Morris Australians are island people, although it never feels that way, until we travel. The idea of hopping in your car, and driving across borders, through countries and even across continents, seems just too fantastic, yet when abroad, it feels like a completely normal kind of thing to do. So when we found out Pearl Jam where playing in Seattle, we hired a car and headed off to another world‌. Vancouver, Canada, is a great modern city, boasting an array of culture, be it food, art or music, as well as sports such as snow skiing in the local mountains, and seems like it has it all. Yet for all of those amazing attributes, it also houses another gem. This being access to Seattle, one of the United States great multicultural cities. The two and half hour drive from Vancouver was just the type of relaxed countryside viewing you come to expect in the north west, and a reminder of the differences between the two countries, some subtle, some not so much. If I had a dollar for every US flag I saw on the drive, I would have had enough to pay the fuel at least.

TRAVEL Follow the sounds Seattle has much to offer, from beaches to baseball, markets to live music, its up to you. The history of the city is quite amazing, with the entire city being built upon the old one, due to major fires in 1889. Tours down below, including ghostly stories are popular for all and recommended for a very different view of the city. Above ground, the Pikes Market, which is famous for its fish throwing antics as well as a smorgasbord of international delights is a definite tourist hot spot and will be a place to easily make your wallet lighter. Definitely worth a stroll, and maybe you will get a coffee at the worlds first Starbucks? Although be prepared for the lineup down the footpath! Next stop, The Museum of Pop Culture. The MOPC is something I would recommend to any traveler, as it is quite an amazing integration of art, music and design. The Jimi Hendrix and Nirvana exhibits shine, really showing the impact these great musicians had on the world. The interactive musical exhibit is one of a kind and is as must for all to try. Don’t forget to go up in the space needle, on a clear day; it’s a spectacular view.

TRAVEL Culture at every turn With a population of 5million people give or take, you can be sure to find something to do, regardless of your tastes. The array of international foods on offer is always a cities high point, and Seattle is not lacking in its selection. The people of this city genuinely love their hometown, and have embraced and accepted all cultures here, and have also led the way with social issues. It feels like a big art and music city, mixed with a healthy love of sports. The Seattle Mariners Baseball stadium is always full of supporters and might be worth taking a day to relax on your trip. Some classic Americana right there. But how can I talk about Seattle with out mentioning the grunge music scene in the 90’s? Enter Pearl Jam, arguably one of the best bands to come from the area, is now leading the way with social change by supporting the homeless crisis, which is gripping this city. We were lucky enough to see the band play at the baseball stadium, and to a packed house of 47000 people no less. To see such a band in such a place was special, and to know 11million dollars was raised from the event, makes it worth noting the power of art and music. Seattle has a heartbeat loud and strong, and will welcome you with open arms.

How the F... Do I Want To Be Loved By Tessa Alexa Stanford This Is How I Want To Be Loved One Day: A Reply I want to be loved like this: Unconditionally, from our very first kiss. I want to dream about kissing you long before it’s ever occurred, and for our first kiss to be etched in the memory of us, and the stories we tell, with no hope of ever being dulled or blurred. I want to be loved boldly, courageously, intimately. Saunter into my life and notice my greatness without me noticing you. Be inspired. Be fascinated. Be enchanted. And when our eyes meet and you see how deeply I see into your soul, perhaps be a little bit terrified, too. But don’t run away. Stand your ground with me. Challenge me, question me, provoke me. Have enough audacity to know you are deeply worthy of being with me and to know that you will to do whatever it takes to be the one standing my by side by day, and lying by my side by night. Stand before me as the hero of your life as I stand before you the hero of mine, so together we can change the world simply by being us, and allowing our love to magnify.

And on the days I take too much on and I come home in tears with a torn cape and my spirit out of shape, please be there. Be the first to visit the stars with me but also the first to catch me when I fall. Be there, when I try to run away from myself by running away from you. When my walls come crumbling down and I fall in a heap of humanness at your feet, please take me into your arms and create harmony from my tears and my fears. As my inner warrior shatters into tiny pieces, please show me your fierce softness to remind me of my own strength to put myself back together again. Be the cosmic symphony of knowing what my soul needs.

LIFESTYLE This Is How I Want To Be Loved One Day: A Reply And when I’ve spent too long by myself, remind me to have fun. Force me to take breaks. Take me on adventures so I can have fun losing myself in you. I want to spend hours, days, weeks intertwined, confined and reminded of you. You in me, and me in you. Every inch of my body knowing every inch of you. I want to climb the stairway to heaven with you, and then keep climbing. I want to find a new stairway with you with a different view. Maybe I’d like to write a song about those stairways with you, too. And what about a beach, listening to a live band play Stand By Me with the waves crashing at our feet, feeling that we’ve been here before, tender and raw, deep down knowing that our souls knew all along... that the sound of our heartbeats together, make our favourite song. I want to be captured by you, made into poetry and sacred art, and I want you to lose sleep wondering how you will ever find the words to express the magic of my untamed heart. Write for me, write to me, sing to me. Be on my. team. Let me show you what unconditional love truly means. I simply wish to be loved like that. Tessa Alexa Stanford
