Andrew Burashko is the founder and creative force behind Art of Time Ensemble. Born in Moscow, Burashko trained as a concert pianist across North America, making his solo debut with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra at the age of seventeen. As a soloist, Burashko performed with some of the world’s most renowned conductors, including Sir Andrew Davis, Pinchas Zukerman, and Yannick NézetSéguin. His eclectic musical interests have led him to share the stage with such diverse artists as Branford Marsalis, Peggy Baker and Madeleine Peyroux. In 1997, Burashko formed the Art of Time Ensemble to produce unique concerts that ignore the barriers between genres and disciplines, with the aim of exposing audiences to a broad range of artistic possibilities. Under Burashko’s direction, Art of Time Ensemble has become a Canadian destination for today’s most accomplished artists working in music, dance, theatre, film, and literature. In addition to its annual concert series in Toronto, Art of Time Ensemble has toured extensively throughout Canada and the United States, as well as in Russia and Finland.

Andrew Downing is a double bass player, composer and bandleader living in Toronto. Andrew graduated from the University of Toronto’s Jazz Performance program. He has studied with Jack Winn, Dave Young, Don Thompson, Shauna Rolston and Joel Quarrington. Andrew plays primarily in the creative jazz scene in Canada, but also performs in other genres, and is a member of the David Occhipinti Quartet and the Lina Allemano Four.

canadian children’s opera company The Canadian Children’s Opera Chorus is a world-class ensemble that introduces the magic of opera to children and youth through professional musical and dramatic education, and the performance of established and newly commissioned operatic and choral repertoire. Since 1968, The Canadian Children’s Opera Company (CCOC) has provided a permanent children’s chorus for the Canadian Opera Company. The first of its kind in this country, the CCOC has gone on to establish an internationally recognized commitment to the creation and production of children’s opera.

john johnson Juno Award winner John Johnson is proficient on all the saxophones from sopranino through baritone, as well as piccolo, flute, alto flute, clarinet, and bass clarinet. In the clubs, John can often be seen playing with Soul Stew, The Montuno Police, The Barlow Group, Michael Pickett, Cimmaron, Vector, The Boss Brass, and Manteca. He has performed with Molly Johnson, Holly Cole, Diana Krall, Aretha Franklin, Roberta Flack, Dionne Warwick, Peabo Bryson, Cal Dodd, Dianne Reeves, Bill Mays, the Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band, and has appeared as a guest artist with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra on numerous occasions. drew jureck a Drew Jurecka is a crossover jazz and classical violinist. He completed his Bachelor’s of Violin Performance at the esteemed Cleveland Institute of Music in Ohio. Drew has played and recorded with a broad spectrum of artists in many genres, from Dave Brubeck to Ron Sexsmith. For five years Drew played with Jeff Healey as part of his Jazz Wizards band. Drew can be heard on three of Jeff Healey’s CDs, including the Juno Nominated Last Call and movie and radio soundtracks including Franklin, Republic of Doyle, Make the Politician Work, Gunless, Degrassi, The Age of Persuasion, Flashpoint, Combat Hospital and Little Mosque on the Prairie.

john macleod

Originally from Nanaimo, British Columbia, Amy Laing earned her Bachelor of Music degree from the HARID Conservatory in Boca Raton, Florida, and her Master of Music degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music. Amy plays regularly with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and has played with the Canadian Opera Company, the Windsor Symphony, Niagara Symphony, Thunder Bay Symphony, and also held a short-term contract with Symphony Nova Scotia in Halifax. Amy is an active chamber musician, and was a member of the Madawaska String Quartet. She has performed or recorded with leading Canadian artists including Jesse Cook, The Barenaked Ladies, Jim Cuddy, Steven Page, Sarah Slean, Molly Johnson, Jim Guthrie, Amy Sky, and played a Canadian tour with Blue Rodeo.

John MacLeod has led a distinguished career spanning 40 years in the Canadian music scene. His first major national and international exposure was as a soloist with Rob McConnell and the Boss Brass, beginning in 1983. His playing can be heard on many Boss Brass albums including two Grammy Award winners. As a composer and arranger, he has scored music for everything from string quartets up to full symphonic orchestra. His big band arrangements can be found in the repertoires of professional and student groups all over Canada, the U.S.A. Europe and Asia. He has also completed several orchestral projects which he has conducted at Roy Thompson Hall and the famous Carnegie Hall in New York City. Since 2003 he has led his own 20-piece jazz big band The Rex Hotel Orchestra, which performs monthly at the Rex in Toronto. They have recorded 2 CDs, both of which were nominated for Juno Awards. Their debut album our first set was awarded album of the year in 2011.

steve mcdade Steve McDade has become an integral name on the list of top Canadian trumpet players. Born in Glasgow, Scotland and raised in Burlington, Ontario, McDade began playing the trumpet at the age of 12 with the Burlington Teen Tour Band, was featured as a soloist at age 14, and entered the Humber College Jazz Studies program at just 16. McDade has been a member of Manteca and The Boss Brass since the 1980s, touring the world with both bands and playing on their Grammy and JUNO Award-winning recordings. He has performed in major jazz festivals all over the world and has played and recorded with some of the biggest names, ensembles, bands, and orchestras on the arts and entertainment scene including Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Doc Severinsen, Diana Krall, Mel Torme, Ella Fitzgerald, The Toronto Symphony, Manhattan Transfer, and worked and recorded with Doc Kupka of Tower of Power.

john macmurchy John MacMurchy is a performer, composer and recording artist based in Toronto. A woodwind player, John concentrates on clarinet, tenor saxophone and baritone saxophone and is fluent in jazz and classical repertoire. He has released four CDs to critical acclaim and international airplay. John has worked with international artists as varied as Warren Vache, Howard Alden, Guido Basso, Henry Mancini, Cleo Laine, Linda Ronstadt, Carol Channing, Peter Appleyard, John Dankworth as well as being in demand as a sideman on the Toronto scene.

Country-singer/songwriter Jessica Mitchell is a storyteller – an open book. After signing with Slaight Music Publishing, Mitchell embarked on several writing trips to Nashville where she found herself inspired by the raw honesty and storytelling nature of the country music genre. She was the recipient of the 2016 COCA award for Singer-Songwriter of the Year award and was nominated for Roots Artist of the Year.

Christian Overton is one of the most in demand low brass players in Toronto, from clubs to theatres and TV commercials in all genres. He has played with Glass Tiger, Jully Black, Sloan, Bedouin Soundclash, Jane Bunnett, and Don Thompson. He holds a Bachelors Degree from Humber College and a Masters Degree from the University of Toronto.

mike murley An engaging, lyrical saxophonist, Mike Murley is one of Canada’s finest jazz talents and one of the most versatile players on the scene today. He has played on eleven Juno Award-winning recordings since 1991, the latest in 2013 for his trio recording Test of Time. Murley has recorded with veteran Canadian artists such as Ed Bickert, Guido Basso, and Rob McConnell. In contemporary music, Murley has collaborated with improvisers and composers, including pianist David Braid and guitarist David Occhipinti. In August 2011 Murley accepted a full-time lecturer position at the University of Toronto Faculty of Music. He has also taught at the York University, Humber College, and has been a visiting member of faculty at the Banff Centre for the Arts. brian o’k ane Brian O’Kane has been a member of bands led by Rob McConnell, Hilario Duran, Ron Collier and John MacLeod, in addition to working with such artists as Maria Schneider, Vince Mendoza, Kenny Wheeler, Aretha Franklin, and Kristin Chenoweth. Brian has performed with the National Arts Centre Orchestra, the KitchenerWaterloo Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra London and the True North Brass, and also played in such shows as The Producers, West Side Story, and Chicago. A faculty member at Humber College, Brian holds a Masters Degree from the University of Toronto.

dougl as perry Formerly Artistic Administrator for the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, Douglas was Artistic Director of ArrayMusic as well as a founding member of Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra with whom he performed and recorded for over 10 years. He has been Principal Viola of the Santa Fe Opera, the Kitchener Waterloo Symphony and the Canadian Opera Company and has numerous recordings on various labels, including J.S. Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto #6 with the CBC. Vancouver Orchestra. He produced a jazz CD with Juno Award winners Dave Young, Phil Dwyer and Michel Lambert and his recording of Harry Somers’ String Quartets with ACCORDES was nominated for a Juno Award. He has served on the Board of Directors of Harbourfront Centre and the Toronto Arts Council, is a Past President of the Recording Musicians’ Association – Canada. rob piltch Rob Piltch has worked with The Bernie Piltch Quartet, The Ted Moses Quintet and Blood, Sweat & Tears. He has worked as a session player with Kim Mitchell, Shirley Eikhardt, Guido Basso, and Rob McConnell, and has recorded two albums: Bells and Rob Piltch. Rob has also performed and recorded with Colm Wilkinson, Molly Johnson, Emilie-Claire Barlow, Louise Pitre, Steven Page, Sarah Slean, Sophie Milman, and The Art of Time Ensemble. His CD Chambers is available on iTunes and on CD Baby.

Terry Promane is an Associate Professor and Jazz Coordinator at the University of Toronto. A trombone, bass trombone and tuba player, Terry maintains a very active performing career as a member of Toronto’s most prestigious jazz groups, including the Dave Young/Terry Promane Octet, the Mike Murley Septet, the John MacLeod Big Band, the Kirk MacDonald Jazz Orchestra, and the Carn/Davidson 9. Many of these groups feature Terry’s original compositions and arrangements.

Jackie Richardson is an award winning actress and one of Canada’s foremost singers of gospel, blues and jazz whose career includes performances in radio, recordings, commercials, theatre, film, TV and live concerts. She has travelled across Canada performing in all the major cities and forces bases as well as countries around the world such as Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Thailand, The West Indies, Lebanon, France, South Pacific Islands and The USA. Jackie has also received NAACP, Juno, Betty, Dora, Jessie, Gemini, TBS Lifetime Achievement and Canadian Black Lifetime Achievement Awards and Nominations. She recorded a duet New York Stories with Micah Barnes (The Nylons) and sang Weeping on Bruce Cassidy’s (Blood Sweat & Tears) solo CD. September 2014, the CD Just Passing Through: The Breithaupt Brothers Songbook was released with Jackie singing the title song. She hosted the award nominated Jazz FM Radio Series Identities – Musicians Who Chose Canada. Jackie also received a Critics award for her portrayal of Big Mama Thornton at The Festival in Ottawa/Gatineau 2013). Jackie toured the Northwest Territories with Joe Sealy’s Africville Stories and returned with her daughter, Kim Richardson, to perform their show Mother and Daughter Reunion.

davide di renzo Davide di Renzo is an alumnus of the University of Toronto’s Jazz Studies program. He was the house drummer for the hugely successful Canadian Idol television talent competition, and has worked with many of the country’s top performers and recording artists including Jacksoul, Holly Cole, Ashley McIsaac, Melissa Stylianou, Dione Taylor, Heather Bambrick, Eliana Cuevas, Richard Underhill, Bill King’s Saturday Night Fish Fry, Sarah Slean, Carol Welsman, and Alanis Morisette, to list a few.

julian richings Julian Richings is a veteran Canadian actor committed to new Canadian work by emerging and established writers. His theatre performances include original productions of Judith Thompson’s plays, Lion In the Streets and Palace of the End, Michael Ondaatje’s Coming Through Slaughter, Inexpressible Island by David Young, and Kat Sandler’s Mustard. He has appeared in over a hundred films including Man of Steel, X Men 3, Hard Core Logo, Cube, Patch Town, and has had recurring roles in many television series including Orphan Black, Supernatural, Patriot, and Stephen King’s Kingdom Hospital.

Stephen Sitarski is Concertmaster of the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra and held the same position with the Esprit Orchestra and the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony (KWS). Sitarski became Artistic Director of the KWS Baroque and Beyond. Stephen frequently appears as soloist with many concertos in the standard repertoire as well as concertos written especially for him by Canadian composers. Stephen is a founding member of Trio Laurier, and is a regular participant in diverse chamber groups and festival events nationally and internationally with many of Canada’s finest musicians. Stephen is also on the faculty of Wilfrid Laurier University, Toronto’s Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory of Music.

Tom Szczesniak has performed as a musician on the scores of over 100 feature films, numerous television shows and over 1,000 commercials. As a player, he has also been much in demand by some of the finest international performing artists, as well as performances for former U.S. Presidents Richard M. Nixon and Lyndon B. Johnson. As a composer and arranger, Tom has used his writing skills to enhance a wide variety of cinematic, televised, commercial and theatrical productions, and has been an integral part of several highly regarded music production houses. In 1993, Tom formed a company – ParkerSzczmith Music Inc – and since that time, has been composing, conducting, playing and arranging under the auspices of this successful and award-winning company. Tom has been honoured to be a multiple recipient of the Socan Award for Film and Television Music and the Emmy Award for Beetlejuice 1991.

rob somerville Rob Somerville has been performing for over 30 years. During this time Rob has backed many major artists such as Natalie Cole, Paul Anka, Nikki Yanofsky, The Temptations, The Nylons, The Four Tops, Frank Sinatra Jr. and Matt Dusk. Rob has played with such notables as Peter Appleyard, Pat LaBarbara, Kenny Wheeler, Gap Mangione, Tom Scott, Robben Ford and Larry Carlton to name a few. Currently Rob is a member of The Juno Award winning John MacLeod Jazz Orchestra, and The Writers Jazz Orchestra. Rob has also played in theatre orchestras for such shows as The Producers, Chicago, A Chorus Line, and Anything Goes. Rob will be in his seventh season at the Shaw Festival this coming summer.

liam titcomb Liam Titcomb is a Canadian musician and actor who released his first self-titled album in 2005 at age 16, and the following year he received a nomination for Best New Solo Artist at the Canadian Radio Music Awards. An actor as well as a musician, Liam played the character Will in Strange Days at Blake Holsey High, and also starred as Jones in the CBC Television drama Wild Roses. Liam has toured alongside artists such as Great Big Sea, Tom Cochrane, David Usher & Colin James. During 2010, Liam divided his time between London and Nashville, composing songs for his latest album Cicada, which was released on Nettwerk Records in October 2012.

Kevin Turcotte has been regarded as one of Canada’s most proficient performers for nearly two decades. He studied music at the prestigious Banff School of Fine Arts and later, at the University of Toronto, where he joined the faculty in the 1990s. He has performed on over 75 recordings and in countless club and concert appearances. He has toured extensively throughout North America as well as with the Dave McMurdo Jazz Orchestra on the band’s 1991 Russian tour, in South America with Time Warp, with Don Byron in Italy.

Perry White’s expressive tone and lyrical approach to playing the saxophone has kept him busy performing in Canada and around the world for over two decades. He has performed and recorded with a who’s who of the Canadian jazz and modern music scene as well as a diverse crosssection of international artists including: Hilario Duran, Dave Young, Kevin Briet, The Shuffle Demons, Bill Mays, Mouse on Mars, Hugh Fraser, Phil Dwyer, Holy Cole, Michael White, John Alcorn, John MacLeod, Dave Mcmurdo, Mr. Something Something, Aretha Franklin, Michael Buble, Raise the Roof, The Boss Brass, Reg Schwager, Planet Earth, Steve Wallace, Rob Armus, among many others.

david wall David Wall is a composer, lyricist, singer and vocal coach. As lead vocalist of the Bourbon Tabernacle Choir he toured Canada extensively, appearing regularly on television and radio. He has performed and recorded with an impressive cross-section of artists. As a composer, he has worked with directors such as Simcha Jacobovici, Avi Lewis, Michael Maclear and John Greyson and has written many scores for film and television. Recently he has contributed original Yiddish songs and settings of modern Yiddish poetry to his Jewish music projects, including collaborative work with acclaimed jazz pianist Marilyn Lerner.

tom wil son Tom Wilson struck Canadian rock gold in the ‘90s as the leader of the much-loved Junkhouse, and later found a whole new audience as a crucial component of rootsrock super-group Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, who have enjoyed recent success with their album KINGS and QUEENS, a collaboration with some of the finest female artists in the field of Americana and Roots Music. Wilson released solo albums in 2001 and 2006, and his 2005 collaboration with Bob Lanois, The Shack Recordings, was critically acclaimed. As the vocalist and guitarist for LeE HARVeY OsMOND, he released A Quiet Evil, The Folk Singer and Beautiful Scars.

Bryden Baird is a trumpet player, composer, and arranger, and has acted as Musical Director for Steven Page (formerly of the Barenaked Ladies) and Feist. When not on the road, Baird maintains an active studio career in Toronto. Some recent projects he’s composed for include the film Gunless (with Greg Keelor of Blue Rodeo), Chantal Kreviazuk’s symphony tour and the Art of Time Ensemble.

With his ability to play numerous musical instruments, Kevin Fox has worked with a variety of artists from Sarah Harmer to Tom Cochrane to Celine Dion. Kevin recently toured with Chantal Kreviazuk and Raine Maida. As a composer/arranger, Kevin has composed music for film and arrangements for artists such as Damhnait Doyle, Lennie Gallant, Shaye and Dolories O’Riordan of The Cranberries. In June 2004, Kevin released his debut album Come Alive. In 2008 he released his second album, Songs for Cello & Voice, which earned him much critical praise.

robert carli Robert Carli leads a diverse career as a performer and composer for film and television. He performs as saxophonist regularly with several ensembles, including the Toronto Symphony and the National Ballet of Canada Orchestra. His music has received numerous awards and nominations, including 5 Gemini Awards and 2 Canadian Screen Awards. In addition to and eclectic mix of Canadian films and TV shows, he has composed music for over 100 episodes of Murdoch Mysteries. a aron davis Aaron Davis is an eclectic composer, arranger, and keyboardist, best known as a founding member of the groups The Holly Cole Trio and Manteca, and as a Gemini-award winning composer of music for film. Some of his arranging credits include Alison Krauss, Canadian Brass, Natalie McMaster, and the Art of Time Ensemble. He has recently worked with classical vocal superstar Measha Brueggergosman on her album of jazz and pop standards, I’ve Got a Crush on You (Kelp Records), and a cross-Canada promotional tour.

jonathan goldsmith Jonathan Goldsmith is a gifted musician and producer, and one of the country’s most sought-after film & television composers. He has won three Gemini Awards, among many other accolades. Some of his credits include scoring Sarah Polley’s feature films Away From Her and Take This Waltz, and producing albums for Bruce Cockburn, Jane Siberry, Hugh Marsh, and Martin Tielli. Jonathan is a founding member of the Art of Time Ensemble and has been involved in numerous projects with the organization as a performer, arranger and composer. steve mackinnon Steve MacKinnon graduated in Composition from the University of Toronto before going on to write and produce many award winning recordings, including Marc Jordan’s Reckless Valentine (for which he shared the Juno Award for Producer of the Year), Serena Ryder’s If Your Memory Serves You Well, and recordings by Molly Johnson, Sophie Milman, Natalie Cole, Olivia Newton John, RyanDan, The Rankins and more.


arrangers jim mcgr ath Jim McGrath is a Toronto-based composer who divides his time between writing music for film and television and composing for the concert stage. His compositions have been performed by a wide range of ensembles including Ottawa’s Thirteen Strings, The Montreal Chamber Orchestra, The Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, and the Hamilton Philharmonic. Jim scored the CBC hit comedy/drama Republic of Doyle, as well as the critically acclaimed series Degrassi, for which he won the Gemini Award for Best Original Score for a Dramatic Series. dan parr Dan Parr is a frequent contributor to Art of Time Ensemble concerts, Previous efforts include arranging and composing credits in Herrmannthology and War of the Worlds (2011 & 2012), Songbook 6: Steven Page (2011), and Cantabile: An Evening of Italian Music (2012). More recently, he composed music for Margaret Atwood’s Thriller Suite, presented in The Poem/The Song (2014).
