Since 2013, between 1 in 12 and 1 in 5 of the shops on the British High Street have closed, leaving the centre of towns and cities across the country empty and abandoned. As austerity bites and online shopping becomes the norm, the future of these areas is uncertain and other uses will need to be found.

The high street was once the centre of the community - the post office, the pub, the grocer provided places to meet and pass the time. We are interested in exploring the potential for public and community buildings to fill this void and for cultural buildings to enrich people’s lives.

On the Whitechapel Road, London, the studio worked to develop proposals for a site currently used as a car park. These spaces were designed to serve the needs of the local community and enrich their lives. Craft centres, co-working spaces, dance facilities and cooking schools were envisaged in courtyard garden spaces that are open to the public.

The brief for the final project of the year was a building within Basildon town centre that combined different uses - a new typology that could start to answer some of the problems of a mono-cultural High Street. Bringing public functions together with a common room or canteen, the projects have the potential to provide a new focus to the High Street.
