The Middlesex Street Estate is named after the street bearing the same name that runs along its eastern boundary. Middlesex Street is an old byway that points to the end of London and the start of the East End. In 1608, the street was called Petticoat Lane and was famous for being a commercial district where used clothing was mainly sold and exchanged. Petticoat Lane was devastated by a major epidemic in 1665, the rich fled, and London lost a fifth of its population. In the late 17th century, Huguenots arrived here to escape persecution and many settled down. The area had already been associated with clothing, where dyeing occurred, and cloth hung on the hook of the surrounding fields.

From the mid-18th century, Petticoat Lane became the centre of clothing manufacturing and the market provided services to can sell new clothing to the wealthy people of the city. By 1830, Petticoat Lane was renamed Middlesex Street. This was to record the boundaries of Whitechapel. Markets continued to flourish and the new wave of Asian immigration, which began in the 1970s, restored the region’s vitality, almost centred on Brick Lane. Sadly, however, the market is suffering from high external competition and online shopping these days.

The goal is to create new opportunities in the area, which is now less visited by many people, unlike the long-standing street market. We were asked to make changes by decorating stores, Market Stalls and apartments. I aim for space where visitors can think of street vendors and the surrounding and find differentiation, familiarity and fun there. Currently, not many people visit this building and road directly, but there are many passers-by who use many business areas and stations around them. A slightly different concept from the previous Market stall, which will target passers-by and lure them to use naturally.

1. Functional as a Moving Space

Like a cube that is assembled in various shapes, different characteristics combine to develop into one shape.

We can feel relaxed, relaxed and composed when we drink tea, as the tannin controls brain neurotransmitters and stabilizes the nervous system to ease tension.

Central London and Petticoat Lane Market have a large number of floating people 2. The role of Open Space in Petticoat Lane Market Petticoat Lane Market has complex functions such as transportation, relaxation, trading, and meeting. It can serve as an important open space for visitors by creating a cafe in a space consisting of buildings and roads.

Inspired by such a future plan based on the current situation in London, Cube proposes a new Market Stall model in cantilever form. The concept of this design is flexible, transformable, and can clearly distinguish its purpose of use. The display and counter models have created a space where the size and layout of the shelves can be combined to create and sell space for sale. This is the most important space, making it clear that the space for customers and sellers.

In addition, various benches provide a suitable area for people’s purposes. The standing chairs provided space for passers-by to rest on their backs with coffee for a while. And transformable benches are places where shoppers can rest by putting their luggage up for a while.

These pieces of objects can create new shapes depending on how you assemble them. The concept of design, which is evolving as it is newly assembled and able to accept new things, comes from the Cube and is similar to London’s future plans.

A bakery at Petticoat Lane Market Petticoat Lane Market has long been famous for selling cloth and woollen etc. Not all the people in the market came to buy them. For example, Polly Nathans Fried Fish Shop was formerly famous at the Petticoat Lane Market. Such famous restaurants can pursue natural visits by marketers and, on the contrary, famous restaurants can induce natural visits to the market. In addition, bread is a food that many people can eat simply. Therefore, effective approaches and intimate bakery can attract enough people’s attention.

Classic & Modern Style The classical style and simple and functional interior style is applied. With it, can feel relaxed, traditional, and sophisticated at the same time. The classic style usually uses finishing materials and furniture to create an atmosphere. The modern style gives a cold feeling by using marble and metal materials, but the classic finish gives you a warm feeling, therefore can enjoy a rich feeling.

This bakery is designed primarily for people’s efficient movement here. They will be encouraged to move efficiently in the store and minimise the inconvenience they may feel in the process. Besides, it was designed to take into account the materials and atmosphere of Middlesex Street Estate. Furnitures The height and structure of the shelves where bread is displayed should not be inconvenient for customers. It should have a visible angle and a comfortable structure to choose from. The display stand was considered along with the guest’s movements.

The store’s design and interior maintained the luxurious and classic feel of the “Taupe” line. The Petticoat Lane Market in front of the store is a densely packed centre of shops. It continuously strengthens differentiated bakery concept and presents a new trend in the bakery market.

Moving Line A simple moving line can keep customers from being confused and lead them to certain products. This bakery’s moving line not only allows customers to pass through all the bread but also controls their movements. The distinction between customer and seller’s moving line leads to a simple and neat moving line.

Open kitchen Revealing the bread-making process to guests can not only give them trust but also give them fun. It was also considered important to separate customer and employee movements so that they do not overlap. Especially, this place has a characteristic that is open but not open. Baking space and Viewing space are divided into glass, so you can see each other well, but the moving line will not overlap.

Middlesex Street Estate, located on the border between Middlesex Street and Petticoat Lane Market, with about 880 residents. A brutalist building built in 1967-72, which is more desolate from the appearance of the architecture and the East End, located on the border of the city. The name Brutalism implies that Western architecture, which traditionally pursues elegant beauty, is brutal, wild and brutal. The architectural features of Brutalism include raw material use, extensive application of exposed concrete, non-formative, and the ability to don’t hide the functional facilities that had been hidden in the building.

The heyday of Petticoat Lane Market in front of Middlesex Street Estate had provided a wide variety of goods and stalls that could have provided everything a family needed to shop. It has attracted people’s curiosity with many attractions, but unfortunately, it has been severely damaged by external competition with other markets and the popularization of online shopping. This affected the lives of High Streets everywhere, and the store owners had to sell off and leaving the market with little to offer.

There are studios on the sixth floor of Middlesex Street Estate. It is the smallest room here and seems suitable for one person to live in. Considering the size of the window in this direction and the structure of the corridor in this direction, it is difficult to expect sunlight. This is the direction viewed from the Podium. The window is much larger than the front. In addition, can see the Podium in the kitchen through the window.

The character who will live in this studio is a female athlete. Many sports centres in London have had a lot of influence on her living here. Also, various games in London are also good ways to relieve her stress. Considering the size and location of the studio on the sixth floor of Middlesex Street Estate, it must be a suitable house for her. She likes to take a bath after exercising. She, who works out a lot, wants to spend most of her time resting at home and tries to have a balanced diet every day.

* What she needs Bathtubs, spacious beds, spaces for simple exercise, kitchens for balanced eating habits, various storage spaces To accept these requirements in this studio, you must have a spacious kitchen and be able to use it in a variety of ways. The studio’s kitchen will be a space for meals, relaxation, and various hobbies. The bathtub and arrangement of the bathroom should be placed to provide a comfortable shower after exercise.

Modern & Minimal Style

Living Room

Modern style is a simple and functional interior style that gives you a sense of openness and sophistication with monotone colour. Modern style mainly uses materials that look cold, so it matches natural materials to give a rich feeling.

This studio room is a relatively small house, requiring effective furniture and arrangement. Considering the main character’s professional characteristics and lifestyle, the house should have room for rest, relaxation, diet and fresh food, and low impact exercises. And this living room can satisfy it.

With minimal design. Through the overall tone down, it creates a modern feel and brightens up by utilising the white.

Unlike the outside, which is difficult due to frequent exercise, the house brings relaxation and comfort to the client. It offers a wide bed and a variety of contents that can do many things on it. The bedroom is considered the most important place for the client to stay at home for the longest time.
