2014 is an important milestone in South Africa – the celebration of 20 years of democracy. A democracy which was hard fought for and won by people like our beloved Tata Madiba, and many others. Artscape celebrates this democracy and the diversity of our people by presenting a variety of programmes throughout the year, which highlight our rich and vast heritage of culture, language and customs. It is by exploring these differences that we can focus on our similarities and through the medium of the performing arts contribute towards nation-building and a country which truly reflects our democratic ideals. My Word! redeSigNiNg buckiNghaM palace (The Life of Richard Rive) Venue: Artscape Theatre
ADE PROJECTS AND CO-PRODUCTIONS
My Word! Redesigning Buckingham Palace is a celebration of the life and work of legendary writer Richard Rive. At the same time it’s a salute to District Six, the heart of Cape Town ripped out because it stood in the way of grand apartheid fantasies. This one-man show borrows from an earlier work co- written with Sylvia Vollenhoven and performed by Basil Appollis, called A Writer’s Last Word. Basil Appollis is especially adept at capturing the equanimity with which Rive impacted the prestigious literary or academic worlds while keeping his feet firmly on home ground. Critic Theresa Smith of the Tonight says it’s a 4-star “evocative” performance. With his own larger than life presence and unique performance skills Basil Appollis evokes a ghostly feeling that we are watching a formidable author who is long gone but whose presence lives on. He is currently adapting Rive’s novel Buckingham Palace, District Six (the one on which his one-man show is based) for broadcast as a TV series. The show is written and produced by Basil Appollis and Sylvia Vollenhoven. Contact: Sylvia vollenhoven Tel: 021 762 4921 E-mail: Sylvia.vollenhoven@me.com

The Shakespeare Schools Festival (SSF) hails from the United Kingdom as an additional education program, aimed at improving language and social skills through the performing arts. SSF Southern Africa is EduCape’s flagship project, piloted in 2010 by founder Kseniya Filinova-Bruton with the objective of revealing the link between arts and education. Each year, the Festival encourages schools to perform abridged 30 minute versions of Shakespearean plays in local professional theatres. The Festival is non-competitive, providing a platform of equal opportunity where there are no boundaries to participation. When Vista Nova joined SSF SA in 2011, children with cerebral palsy, physical different-abilities and barriers to learning experienced the thrills of the stage. This year, the Festival extends its national reach to Johannesburg and Durban, with a record total of 26 performances from 30 participating high schools.

The production will showcase and honour Mr Jacobs for his tireless work within the disadvantaged communities on the Cape Flats by offering ballet classes to the youth of the area. Cecil Jacobs was born in District Six in 1940. He became a successful ballet dancer in an era when this was not an obvious profession for a young Black man to pursue. Cecil taught dance at the EOAN Group and the City of Cape Town as a senior instructor. With his wife, Brenda, he started the Outreach Community Bursary Project, which teaches ballet.

Community Ploughback Movement is ordinarily referred to as CPBM and is a non-profit and public benefit organisation which was formed in 2002. CPBM has adopted a multi-disciplinary, integrated, comprehensive and holistic approach which seeks to intervene in combating the hopelessness and apathy that the apartheid system instilled in the “township” communities. The aim of CPBM is to, as the name suggests, plough back into disadvantaged communities whatever skills their members acquire in life’s journey. The project was founded by Professor N Mtetwa who has a passion for community development, when she brought together a group of professionals from Gugulethu, Langa and Nyanga in an effort to use their skills and spare time to empower the communities they grew up in. Artscape High School Drama Mini Festivals, Main Festival and Gala Event 19 – 26 May
High School Mini Drama Festival and Gala Event Venue: Various
The High School Drama Festival gives learners an opportunity to create and present an original drama around a central theme on a professional stage. This year’s theme is Democracy, Demokrasie, Demokrasi. To afford more schools the opportunity of participating and to accommodate rural schools, mini community festivals take place during May. Of approximately 50 entries, 14 are selected to participate in the main festival in August at the Artscape Arena. Schools need to prepare a 30 minute maximum original production using the theme Democracy, Demokrasie, Demokrasi. We have chosen this theme so that drama groups will focus their texts through research. We want schools’ original ideas regarding how they view themselves in this world and more personally, in our societies. • An extract of 10 minutes should be presented as an audition piece at the mini festival. • The adjudicators will be looking for potential and promise during the mini festivals in May. Mini festival dates: – Artscape Arena (Cape Town) – Artscape Arena (Cape Town) – Artscape Arena (Cape Town)

SPECIAL PROJECTS March
Artscape Wellington / Mbekweni Youth Band Venue: Wellington
The Artscape Wellington /Mbekweni Youth Band is a special Artscape project, that seeks to build social cohesion by bringing together youth from the Wellington and Mbekweni communities. Using music literacy and skills development as the vehicle it builds bridges between these communities and empowers the youth with valuable skills to enable them to access tertiary education and possibly further their careers and opportunities in the music industry. The project is presented in partnership with the Breytenbach Centre and woks under directorship of renowned jazz musician and educator, Ian Smith. Most of the band could all play instruments when they came to the band but they lacked the music literacy skills to take their performances to a professional level. The band was launched in April 2012 and practice sessions are held on Saturday mornings. Band members range between the ages of 12 and 24. One of the main challenges has been the lack on instruments. Most of the band members do not own instruments but despite these challenges the band has, over the past couple of months, developed an extensive repertoire and performed at the 2013 Woordfees in Stellenbosch, at the Afrikaanse Taalraad annual convention and the Cape Town Consular Corps Annual Ball at Pigalle Restaurant in October 2013. The band will be performing at the Suidooster Festival on 1 February 2014 in a production called Bolandse Klanke and at the Woordfees on 7 March 2014. It is a gripping account of the reconciliation of a son to his father, the essence of grace and the power of humour. Shona and European cultures collide in a dynamic fusion of music, spirited dance, exquisite aerial acrobatics and hilarious antics. This production is produced by Beulah Kleinveldt and supported by the Western Cape Department of Arts and Culture and Sport. 27 april credo: a Testament to the freedom charter – A musical testament to the Freedom Charter is a multimedia oratorio based on a poem by Brent Meersman with music by Bongani Ndodana-Breen. It is a poetic distillation of the Freedom Charter of 1955, a ground-breaking document which defined a vision for a just and equitable society for all the people of South Africa. Credo (Latin for “I believe”) explores the unifying values of the Charter that are now embodied in our current constitution. As we approach 20 years as a free and democratic society, it is fitting that we remind ourselves of the values that we share as the people of South Africa. This schools’ programme has been designed to help educators and learners understand our country’s journey to democracy through the Freedom Charter. We explore the meaning of the current freedoms that we enjoy and also our rights and obligations as citizens in a democratic society. Credo was developed by Pina Ya Thari and commissioned by UNISA for its 150th anniversary. For more information consult www.unisa.ac.za/credo

Into Isintu (College of Cape Town) The Gardens Campus, School of Education and Training, College of Cape Town has developed a children’s musical play with a multicultural theme called Into Isintu. The story takes place in Cape Town, the home of the Spirit of Table Mountain. Through the centuries the Spirit has resided within the mountain, witnessing the evolution of the city. In the Cape Town of today, he wanders through the city disguised as an old “bergie”, bemoaning the state of modern society and mourning the loss of the nation’s cultural identity. Like a pantomime, the characters will engage with the children in the audience, inviting them to comment and help the actors unravel the plot. The songs are popular tunes that the audience will recognise. The story climaxes with the realisation that Africa is a home to a number of cultural identities who regard the continent as their home. Using the words of Thabo Mbeki’s I am an African speech, the audience is reminded of their heritage and nationhood. Finally, the cast joins the Spirit in a lively rendering of the Waka waka – This time for Africa. 23 and 24 May (Arena)

2000 Years since the first literary mention of Odissi in the Indian treatise on creativity – the Natyashastra – India’s oldest classical dance form is brought to the modern stage in a transmedia theatre production by Odissi Niketan Africa- in association with the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra. A spectacular symphony of dance and music from both continents, this deeply moving story is a modern interpretation of Shakti, the mythological goddess of creativity. It traces the journey of Tara, a young African girl and descendent of India’s indentured labourers – who overcomes adversity to become one of India’s finest dancers. Born during apartheid on a wine farm in Stellenbosch, Tara’s rise as a dancer in the 21st century inspires a message of hope, through the power of creativity, to transform the world. It will premiere at Artscape as an officially accredited event of World Design Capital Cape Town 2014. Temple of Dance is the signature annual production of Odissi Niketan Africa, in collaboration with the Government of India and Shakti Capital (Pty) Ltd. The 2014 production also forms part of the centenary celebration of the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra. Contact: Merle o’brien Tel: 076 891 2583 Website: templeofdance.co.za

The mural project was initiated and sponsored by The City of Cape Town. Renowned local artists /musicians and selected artists are transforming the link parking tunnel between Artscape and the Civic Centre as a visual arts project. The design follows a thematic progression with the character and feel of indigenous Khoisan iconography – a colourful celebration of our original cultural heritage, taking in the cultural forms and shapes of dance, music, mythology and landscape. The theme depicts a movement “from darkness to the light” following the contours of the tunnel. Corporate sponsors are invited to contribute towards the completion and branding of this project.

African Theatre Initiative For over 20 years, the International Amateur Theatre Association / Association Internationale du Theatre Amateur (IATA/AITA) has supported a number of World Festivals of Children’s Theatre. Over 80 countries have participated in festivals since 1990. In 1992 at the Standing Committee for Children and Youth, theatre for and by young people has become an integral part of IATA/AITA’s Performing Arts events around the world. At the 20th anniversary of these vibrant and uplifting Youth People’s Festivals in 2010 it was again recognised that such festivals not only give a platform for young people from all over the world to share their creativity, but also stimulate and invigorate the development of young people’s artistic achievements in their respective countries. In 2010 the Steering Committee for Children and Youth with the support of colleagues in Uganda and Zimbabwe challenged Richard Finch to develop an African Initiative which would aim to raise the profile of Young People’s Theatre in Africa and also give greater prominence to this on the international stage. After initial discussions with IATA/AITA it was agreed that such a festival takes place in Africa at a time to suit the host nation. Groups from four to six countries mainly from Southern Africa are to be invited to attend. These would include Zimbabwe, Uganda and Burkina Faso with their experience

Adriaan Januarie is the founding member of Awesome Talents. The project is based in Malmesbury and seeks to promote the abundance of talent in this area. After conducting research, it was discovered that there is a need for opportunities and a platform for talent to be recognised in the Swartland. The research also found that there is a lack of entertainment especially in certain communities. The conclusion of the research project gave rise to the formation of Awesome Talents which strives to develop the young people’s talent in Malmesbury by organising events to showcase to different audiences the wonderful talent which exists here.

College of Magic Its approach to the education of marginalised young people through the power of arts is groundbreaking. Faced with such overwhelming odds, South Africa’s youth are blighted by a landscape of hopelessness and destitution. A future without hope is a scary one indeed. The College of Magic believes that young people need to understand that their circumstances are not the only factors that determine their destiny – they must be given the hope and skills to create, shape, participate in and plan their own future. A sense of wonder needs to be rekindled in young people and the understanding that in the magic of the performing arts, nothing is impossible. The College of Magic’s efforts span across the disciplines from magic through to the allied arts of juggling, mime, clowning, puppetry and technical theatrical skills. Its programmes have received worldwide acclaim having been featured on CNN, The New York Times, Canada’s Globe and Mail, International Herald Tribune, and most recently in the award-winning documentary Make Believe. The CPBM Cultural Ensemble is the performing arts flagship project under the auspices of the Community Plough Back Movement. CPBM has adopted a multi-disciplinary, integrated, comprehensive and holistic (MICH) approach which seeks to intervene in combating the hopelessness and apathy that the apartheid system instilled in the “township” communities. CPBM Cultural Ensemble- the performing arts. 2. Women Learning to Earn – sewing and designing of traditional afro chic clothing for sale. 3. School after care. 4. Food Security/ Food Gardening/ Healthy Living programme currently funded by IDT/ EPWP. The CPBM Cultural Ensemble is an intergenerational performing group whose main aim is to promote African arts and culture. The objectives of the Ensemble are: • To promote and preserve African traditions/indigenous songs and dances and jewellery in the form of beading. • To build the capacity of unemployed women, men and youth by using their God-given skills. • To raise awareness in the communities “townships” on how they can use traditional/indigenous arts and culture for their economic development. • To serve as an income generation for the performers who are mainly unemployed, as they do not possess the skills to compete in the formal sector. Files in the Secret Prussian State Archives refer to a Prussian Consulate as early as 1834. In 1884 the Consulate was upgraded to a Consulate General. During World War I, Switzerland represented German interests in South Africa. Records indicate that as early as 1920 an independent German Consulate existed but was closed at the outbreak of Second World War. On 18 August 1952 the Federal Republic of Germany opened a Consulate in Sea Point with Hans Fricke as its head. In August 1962 it became a Consulate General headed by Franz Malsy-Mink.

The Founders and Directors established iKapa Dance with the aim of developing the arts and culture of South Africa through creating innovative, world-class technical contemporary dance inspired by South African issues and tales that could be created and performed by a culturally diverse group of young, talented artists. Whilst selecting these young artists it became clear that there was a need for social development through dance and by utilising the company’s ability and passion, iKapa began to use dance as a medium to teach life skills to the youth of areas affected by poverty and crime. Through the Training and Outreach programme, children learn an appreciation of arts and culture while being inspired to realise their potential and discouraged from partaking in anti-social behaviour. SOS Children’s Villages builds families for orphaned, abandoned and vulnerable children in need by helping them shape their own futures and sharing in the development of their communities. We give these children the opportunity to build lasting relationships within a family. Our family approach in the SOS Children’s Village is based on four principles: each child needs a mother and grows up most naturally with brothers and sisters, in their own house, within a supportive village environment. We enable children to live according to their own culture and religion, and to be active members of the community and help these children to recognise and express their individual abilities, interests and talents. We ensure that children receive the education and skills training they need to be successful and contributing members of society. We share in community life and respond to the social development needs of society’s most vulnerable children and young people. We establish facilities and programmes that aim to strengthen families and prevent the abandonment of children. uNiep (the uNioNdale iNtegrated eMpoWerMeNt proJect) UnIEP was originally intended as a co-coordinating structure for a number of existing projects, but it quickly became apparent that it had a much wider role to play – a holistic role which would address not only the immediate problems of unemployment, but also the longer term questions of the social environment, human development and commercial sustainability.
Many of the projects in the UnIEP stable are well on their way to becoming self-sufficient business units. The flagship is surely the restoration of the Royal Hotel which will become a tourist centre in Uniondale accommodating the Uniondale Tourism Office, tourist rest rooms, and a tearoom and retail showroom of products manufactured by UnIEP’s projects.
COLLABORATIVE INSTITUTIONS
The model is simple: UnIEP exists as a resource for local upliftment and as the co-ordinator and fundraiser for various separate projects which are either businesses-in-training (like Creative Fashions, which makes tracksuits and sports clothing to order) or the kind of self-help programmes which every community needs (such as a homecare programme for AIDS sufferers and a community kitchen).
There’s also Comfiserve, of course, and Creative Fashions, but there are others, too: Rooirivier Rooimiere, for example (literally Red River Red Ants – an obvious reference to that species’ famous industriousness), which produces quilts and curtains and has supplied such illustrious clients as George’s Fancourt Hotel. And Nomdo Meubels, which manufactures fine furniture out of blackwood (when they can get it these days), poplar and pine. These projects have been funded with donor capital – but once they’re able to stand alone, that’s what they’re expected to do. vuyaNi daNce theatre (vdt)
VDT is now recognised as an exciting and innovative dance company that produces great dancers and has good teaching techniques and is of good quality all round, with programmes including: corporate productions, performances, choreography and events management, community outreach programmes, open dance classes, theatre productions (national and international), dance workshops, lectures (administered by Gregory Maqoma) and dance trainee programmes. Vuyani Dance Theatre is funded by the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund (NLDTF) for a period of three years.
COLLABORATIVE INSTITUTIONS
Vuyani Dance Theatre has for the last 12 years provided a platform to establish artistic direction, to communicate qualities and values which addressed our fundamental humility, to be audacious and bold in dealing with contentious political and gender issues and, most importantly, to establish the company as an important element in the history of contemporary African dance in this country and beyond. These years mark our childhood memories which we hold dear as they define our innocence and serve as a constant reminder of the legacy we leave behind for future generations. These memories are the defining tools of the movement aesthetic, mixed in with a streak of the psychoanalytical and a highly developed curiosity so beautifully captured in our choreographed award-winning works. Founded by Gregory Maqoma in 1999, Vuyani Dance Theatre has become one of South Africa’s leading dance companies and has performed consistently over the last 12 years to great acclaim.

International Exchange Programmes • Liaison Arts Burgundy – France (Youth Exchange Project) Rationale: The Artscape Theatre seeks to develop an annual international exchange programme for local young artists and cultural activists. This will be done in partnership with the Burgundian cultural organisation for performing art, Liaison Arts Burgundy, and French organisation for youth education and empowerment, CEMEA. This a six months training programme. Ten historically disadvantaged young artists and cultural activists from the Western Cape would be given an opportunity to improve their skills and self-confidence through training in arts, art management, project methodology, new technologies and environment of culture in Burgundy. In collaboration with the Chrysalis Academy, this programme aims to place the students in the job market when they return from France, with a six-month internship being spent in a cultural organisation of the Western Cape. In return, Artscape would spearhead a six months training programme for young Burgundian artists, with the aim of exposing the young French artists to the cultural diversity of the Western Cape artistic field and partaking in programmes that promote social cohesion through the arts. Lastly, the Artscape Resource Centre would join forces with France’s Liaison Arts Burgundy (LAB) with the aim of connecting cultural organisations from Burgundy and the Western Cape. The two resource centres would provide a platform for artists and organisations aimed at developing international projects. • Brouhaha – Liverpool (Youth in the World Project) Rationale: The arts and cultural sector now amounts to around 4% of European GDP. Across the globe the cultural sector makes valuable and significant contributions to the social and economic wellbeing of society as a whole. Through developing the project participant’s artistic engagement, delivery experience and enterprise initiative we move the participants towards professional competencies and equip them with the skills to access employment.

We are sharing the theatre with another production, so lighting cannot be too extravagant, but our technical team does its best to satisfy everybody’s requirements. 7. We will contact you early in 2013 for details about your performance and your technical or other requirements. 8. We will need a little information about the school and the performance piece. We will inform you of when to send these. arTscaPe schools’ arTs fesTiVal DATES: 11, 12, 13, 14, August, 18, 19, 20, 21, 25, August and 26, 27, 28 August 2014. Gala event: 29 August 2014.
