Professor Fikeni
The year 2016 presents Artscape with yet another opportunity to continue in its quest to provide world class theatre productions as well as interactive and educational skills development programmes aimed at the youth, emerging artists and professional artists. Productions and programmes include all performing arts genres and are fully representative of the diverse cultural heritage of our country. Artscape is one of the examples of what arts, culture and heritage can do towards contributing to the nation building process through the promotion of unity, diversity and social cohesion. Artscape also recognises the immense challenges facing the youth of today from social to economic issues and we are consciously making a contribution, albeit in a modest way towards resolving some of the challenges. We also mark, amongst the anniversaries, the 20th anniversary of our Constitution, which continues to be our beacon light of hope. This year we also celebrate the anniversaries of other important events in our country’s history, such as the 40th anniversary of the June 16 1976 youth/student uprising and the 60th anniversary of the 1956 Women’s March to the Union Buildings in Pretoria. These events, amongst others, have all contributed to the liberation of our country and the democracy we all enjoy today. The youth programmes offered at Artscape are geared towards celebrating our youth and aim to empower them with the skill-set required to advance their chosen artistic forms. Artscape also celebrates the 10th anniversary of the annual Artscape Women’s Humanity Arts Festival in 2016 which will highlight the 60th anniversary of the 1956 Women’s March. On behalf of Artscape Theatre Centre and the Artscape Council Members, we welcome you to join us on this journey of showcasing our country’s rich artistic diversity; empowering our youth; supporting and promoting our local artistic talents to ensure the sustainability of Arts, Culture and Heritage in South Africa!

Marlene Le Roux
As the newly appointed CEO of Artscape Theatre Centre, I will proudly continue to promote the development of Arts and Culture in the Western Cape using the Artscape Theatre as the catalytic vehicle to achieve this. We act as both nurturer and promoter in the value chain of arts, heritage and culture. South Africa, being a culturally diverse nation, has an extremely rich arts, culture and heritage sector which blends into a melting pot of artistic creativity of all genres of the arts. Artscape has exciting productions and training programmes planned for 2016. These productions and training programmes have been achieved by forging partnerships with government, national and international stakeholders within the performing and visual arts industries. We have also initiated annual festivals such as the Heritage Festival which takes place during the month of September to celebrate our culturally rich heritage; the annual Women’s Humanity Arts Festival which celebrates humanity, women and the disabled as well as Youth Day programmes which celebrate and showcase the artistic talents of our country’s youth. The year 2016 heralds the 40th commemoration of June 16th. The Women’s Humanity Arts Festival celebrates it’s milestone 10th anniversary in 2016 which coincides with the 60th anniversary of the 1956 Women’s March to the Union Buildings in Pretoria. Our skills and training programmes focus on educating and empowering the youth and emerging performing artists to ensure they are adequately equipped to operate and compete at an optimum level in the world of arts and culture. The training programmes offered at Artscape Theatre align with the vision and mission of the South African National Government Department of Arts and Culture which is to contribute to sustainable economic development within the arts and culture sector. It is my pledge to continue celebrating our country’s emerging and professional performing artists. I invite and welcome you to join me in continuing to ensure that the Artscape Theatre Centre fulfills its mission to provide audiences and communities with the highest level of artistic excellence in all aspects of performing arts!

Nothing But The Truth and Missing Venue Theatre Playwright John Kani Director Dr John Kani
A season not to be missed! Western Cape Education Department schools are invited to attend the production of Nothing But The Truth. Missing will be open to the general public. For the first time in the history of Artscape, Dr John Kani’s work will be celebrated. Dr Kani will direct and produce Nothing But The Truth and will act in his play Missing. NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH This is the story of two brothers, Sipho and Themba Makhaya, that reads very similar to that of Abel and Cain. They hail from a lower-middle class family in a township in Port Elizabeth. Sipho, the eldest son, has to sacrifice going to university in order to help boost the family coffers by joining the workforce. The younger brother, Themba, gets the opportunity to go to university, where he joins the political struggle, eventually reaching its’ highest echelons. Themba becomes an overnight sensation and is lauded and applauded as a struggle hero – until he is forced to leave the country due to the pressures imposed on him by the Special Branch. Meanwhile, Sipho continues living his ADE DIARY 2016

mundane life in the township. His son from a previous affair is killed by the Apartheid government’s police, but he takes comfort from his daughter Thando, whose mother was the love of Sipho’s life. When Themba passes away in exile his daughter Mandisa brings his ashes home to be buried among his ancestors – and the past comes back with a vengeance. Nothing but the Truth is a thought-provoking story of our recent past, a historical education of Apartheid and the struggle for freedom of our people and an appropriate setwork for the democratic Republic of South Africa. MISSING Playwright John Kani Director Janice Honeyman
Missing is a new South African play written by John Kani. The play tells the story of Robert Khalipa who has been living in exile in Stockholm, Sweden for over 30 years with his wife, Anna Olson who has inherited her father’s large electronic and communications company and their daughter Ayanda, a doctor working in a hospital in Stockholm. Something that Robert has been waiting for all his life in exile has finally happened: Mandela has been released. South Africa is on the road to democracy. Going home has become a reality. Instead of a celebration, this new situation becomes the cancer that breaks the Khalipha family apart. To add insult to injury, Robert is not called by the ANC to come home and be part of the negotiations. What follows is a plot full of intrigue, lies, backstabbing, conspiracy and political in-fighting. Peter Tshabalala, a young comrade who was Robert’s assistant in the ANC office in Stockholm, plays an important role in the isolation of Robert by the organisation. How can the release of Nelson Mandela be the reason for this family to break up? Contact Tel Email

A dreaded leader of a local gang gets parole after seven years in jail. Everybody wonders whether Map has changed – or if he still is the old Map they knew before. The drama is set shortly after the forced removals from Cape Town to the Flats. It investigates the influence that social evils have on the community. It gives us a glimpse into the lives of the uprooted, their love and pain and their desperate yearning for a better life. The award-winning Adam Small’s Krismis van Map Jacobs touches on social issues such as unemployment and poverty – still relevant today – as well as the search for identity and forgiveness. Krismis van Map Jacobs focuses on the scars left by Apartheid on the Cape coloured community. The lead role of Map Jacobs will be played by Maurice Paige, who plays the character of Calvin in the South African TV drama, Isidingo. Kontak/Contact Tel E-pos/Email Kontak E-pos/Email

The Keeper of the Kumm (Khoi San Production) Venue Theatre Playwright Sylvia Vollenhoven Director Basil Appollis
She’s a battle-hardened, 21st-Century journalist. For years she used journalism to expose the evil that was apartheid. Now, in The Keeper of the Kumm, Sylvia Vollenhoven responds to an Ancestral Calling to explore the almost forgotten world of her Ancestors. Likely, the Ancestors of us all. In 1870 //Kabbo /Uhi-ddorro Jantjie Tooren, a revolutionary Bushman hunter of the /Xam people, fears that the fragile culture of his people — their very existence — is threatened. Their stories are being lost. And without their stories, he knows, his people will die. //Kabbo goes on a quest to find people who can write down Bushman stories while there are still people to tell them. 22 ADE DIARY 2016
Programmes and Co-productions The result is an archive recorded over a thousand days and nights. Today, more than a century later, the archive is entered into UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register. But few of his descendants know it exists, have ever heard of him. Now, across the centuries, // Kabbo reaches out to a writer – one of his descendants – to take up his Quest. Kumm is the word for story or anything told in the now extinct /Xam Bushman language that adorns our Coat of Arms. The narrative and impetus of the project speaks to the groundswell of awareness of Khoisan identity and marginalisation. Contact Tel Email

CREATIVE DEPARTMENT PROGRAMMES
New Voices “Enhancing Programme” Guided by the spirit of rectifying societal harms and inclusiveness in the arts, the New Voices advance programme is led by our vision of redressing our past illnesses through a multi-cultural, interdisciplinary and diverse aesthetic that embraces the totality of our society. It is a developmental programme that seeks to give voice to new theatre makers, directors, choreographers, scriptwriters and creative expression. The programme will also seek to develop and give platforms to narratives, aesthetics and languages that have been, and still are, marginalized in our creative industries. It is through this that the programme aims to restore the dignity and confidence of artists of multiple creative expression, and to excavate the buried stories in reclaiming their identity in the mainstream. This is an empowerment programme aimed at building on individual artistic potential, merits and inherent talents. It will create jobs while raising the standard of excellence. It is a programme that aims to bridge the gap between emerging work and the mainstream. Creating a bridge between amateur/student work to professional platforms. The programme also wants to assist in the transformation of emerging productions into high quality marketable productions through networking and creating opportunities for sustainable work and collaborations. Master Classes – Dance and Movement Each Saturday, Sibonelo Dance Project with the support of Artscape hosts a group of eager and excited children and youth from disadvantaged backgrounds who participate in dance and movement classes. From humble beginnings, these classes continue to grow on a monthly basis, with children coming from various communities in and around Cape Town. It is also through the programme that participant’s parents become familiar with Artscape and its programmes. The classes are conducted by Mzo Gasa and the Sibonelo Dance Project professional dancers, whose journey started with similar beginnings through the circle of learning and empowerment. They are also occasionally joined by practicing arts professionals for brief lectures and conversations in order to enrich the experience and skills of the young people involved. Participants of the master classes get exposed to mainstream theatre through our productions during full dress rehearsals, opening nights and festivals. In 2015, participants took part in Jazzart’s Azishe Festival 2015 with the production Alkebulan choreographed by Mzo Gaza and Sibonelo Dance Project. In 2016 the Public Art Dance Classes will include open air classes at the Piazza to activate our public precinct while parents watch from the restaurant. Contact Tel Email

IsiXhosa in Performing Arts isiXhosa, as one of three official languages in the Western Cape, does not enjoy the same stature or standard of accepted use that English or Afrikaans does on our commercial stages. This factor has been ignored by most and as a leading Arts Institution, Artscape is exploring ways of engaging rigorously with all the languages without fear. This project does not intend to silence the other predominant languages, rather it seeks to address the linguistic imbalance in a direct manner and establish Artscape as a fertile, multilingual artistic landscape. Consequently, Artscape will be a leading institution in redressing the language imbalance in the performing arts industry. Artscape has already started engaging in isiXhosa works by producing plays based on set-works being read in the Western Cape schools’ curriculum. The isiXhosa Classical production has been identified as an annual project where a classic isiXhosa novel is adapted into a full scale professional production with a full run of at least 13 to 20 performances. The broader public can therefore engage with the works in its live or literary form and will be available at Artscape, through public and academic libraries, universities of drama and literature, theatres and museums. The intention is to create a culture not just of consumption of the art through the stage versions but that people can engage with the work in its literary form. Contact Tel Email

The three month programme is divided into four phases starting with an orientation phase where students learn skills to build their resilience such as goal setting, basic health and well-being, first aid and personal mastery amongst many others; an outdoor phase where they head to the great outdoors to test their personal limits, discover their strengths and weaknesses, develop teamwork skills and experience the healing power of nature. Hiking, abseiling and canoeing are some of the experiences in the outdoor phase; a skills phase where students are taught various skills such as welding, carpentry, electrical circuitry, depending on their needs and aptitude and then a community phase where they are prepared for their lives back in their communities. The College of Magic The College of Magic aims to reach marginalised young people through the power of arts. Through its programme, The College of Magic wants to show young people that their circumstances are not the only factors that determine their destiny – they must be given the hope and skills to create, shape, participate in and plan their own future. A sense of wonder needs to be rekindled in young people and the understanding that in the magic of the performing arts, nothing is impossible. The College of Magic’s efforts span across the disciplines from magic through to the allied arts of juggling, mime, clowning, puppetry and technical theatrical skills. Maitisong Festival Maitisong (a place of entertainment in Setswana) is a theatre owned by Maru a Pula School. It is located in the heart of Botswana’s Capital City Gaborone. Maru a Pula School has always had a policy of outreach to the community since the school was opened in 1972. When the school realized that it needed a hall and there was no theatre in Gaborone, the Headmaster at that time - David Matthews - campaigned to raise money to build such a space. Money was raised in the USA and South Africa, and architect, Ian Marshall, drew up the construction plans. Building began in 1986 and on 22 March 1987, the doors of Maitisong were officially opened. The Maitisong Festival was then created to give the public an opportunity to witness new Botswana theatre at work and be inspired. Contact Tel Email Facebook Twitter Instagram Website

Un-mute Dance Project The Un-mute Dance Project came into existence in 2013, after Youngblood Arts and Culture Development funded the first phase of a performance creation entitled ‘Unmute’ in Cape Town and formally launched as a full time dance company in 2014. Un-mute was the first choreographic piece by Andile Vellem based on his experience as a deaf, professional dancer who has been dancing professionally for more than 13 years whilst being deaf. Through the Un-mute Dance Project, Andile found his voice as a choreographer using sign language as the source of the movement vocab. He has brought together artists from different backgrounds to find and explore what they would like to un-mute (feelings, perceptions, social norms and expectations), while striving to deconstruct what society perceives as dance.
