Moffie
Book of Rebellations
Inspired by author Andre Carl van der Merwe’s award-winning novel about the brutality of trying to survive as a gay conscript in the SADF in the early 1980s, Moffie is a dance play about love, loss, survival, sexuality and violence. While the dance version considers both historical and contemporary explorations of gay people in the military, it still has Andre Carl van der Merwe’s story at its heart. Don’t miss this highly controversial and acclaimed production by Standard Bank Young Artist Award Winner for Dance 2012, Bailey Snyman.
Set in 2024, this allegorical fantasy takes us to the world of Kanana, the land of promised freedoms, which is under the tight grip of Tlhogo Moimele, its benevolent ruler with an acute case of acoustic neuroma. Kanana is a land of sheep that muffle their screams and smile to the shadow of the knife, and goats that cover their festering wounds while bleating out the national song. Amidst the merriment, Gogoa emerges from a forgotten past, bearing the torch of one love to raise a rebel nation. With the children on his side, the cracks on Tlhogo Moimele’s face begin to emerge and Kanana’s future hangs in the balance…
