Kia Ora This year is all about collaboration. The words collaboration and art together invoke a strong feeling of excitement within me and have always been a focus for me personally in everything I do when I am promoting the arts.
I came across something very exciting that I wanted to share with you. It is a new international web based platform called HITRECORD.org. What’s exciting about this is it’s a place for artists of all levels to come together, connect with others all over the world and collaborate on joint art pieces - and even get paid to create these fantastic works! I am looking forward to seeing what comes out of creative minds working together to create. I have a strong feeling that something magical is going to happen to the world - and we will see a whole new generation of creative brilliance come through. Following this theme, there are so many collaborative projects going on in Selwyn this month - Music on the Green Lincoln, Selwyn writers networking, Hip-hop workshops, exhibitions, pottery workshops and more. Even more exciting, is the release of the first ever Arts Directory for Selwyn. Whether you are looking for tuition for yourself or your child, needing to learn a wedding dance, looking for galleries to visit or wanting to commission a piece of art for your home or business, it’s all in the guide. This year keep your eyes open for all of the wonderful opportunities that arise as a result of a team of people, organisations and groups coming together to embrace the arts in our community.

Inspire Hip Hop Workshops People in Selwyn will be able to hone their hip-hop skills at a series of workshops and performances happening in February. Three South island tutors and two dance crews are bringing their creative passion for hip-hop and breakdancing to Darfield on 13 February and Rolleston on 20 February. The line-up includes 10 year-old local sensation Manaia Davies from Glentunnel, who will be taking hip-hop workshop for beginners; Kbigs who will be taking a breakdancing workshop, and Elly Hanssen who will be taking an intermediate to advanced hip-hop workshop. Dance crews Swarm and Reality will put on free performances open to the public at the conclusion of the workshops, as well as performances by Kbigs and Manaia.Manaia, supported by her mother Yerane, applied to Creative New Zealand for funding to hold the workshops. The workshops are also being supported by the Selwyn Arts Trust. Creative Communities Fund Administrator, Stuart Westoby says this is a great opportunity to support those who are passionate about dance in Selwyn. “It is projects like this that the Creative Communities Fund was set up for, as it supports local art activities and performers within Selwyn District.” Manaia Davies’ passion for dance, singing and drama is rapidly making an impact on the stage and in the community. She won the Greymouth 2015 Hip Hop 12 and under category and the Shakedown 2014 Hip Hop under 13 category. She also scored 94 per cent on the Trinity College of London Speech and Drama exam for grade three. “I love hip-hop because I instantly feel a connection with the movement and the music. I love teaching hip-hop so I can share this passion with others. ” Manaia has a passion for teaching- she teaches a beginners hip-hop class in Springfield. She has a strong vision to help others and give everyone the chance to be exposed to hip-hop dance at a high level. “People love hip hop because it is seen performed by artists and in video clips all over the world. I know that New Zealand is special as it hosts some of the best hip hop dancers and choreographers in the world. We will be bringing this standard to the kids in Selwyn and I am hoping people will become more confident within themselves and develop a passion for hip-hop like I did. I want to expose their hidden talent.” Christchurch breakdancer Kbigs is holding a breakdance workshop. He began dancing 15 years ago at the age of 19. He has performed in Seattle, Korea, Los Angeles, New York, Singapore and now here in Christchurch. Singer, songwriter, dancer, and choreographer Elly Hanssen is an established member of the dance scene, after graduating in the top seven from Sydney’s leading international performing arts college, Brent Street. Elly then moved to Atlanta, USA and after joining the Culture Shock Dance troupe was able to establish relationships with leading performers in the dance industry. She has toured throughout the United States with various artists including Keri Hilson, Lloyd, Mase, Queen Latifah, Trillville, Outkast and Bow Wow, as well as working for Real Deal records - boxer Evander Holyfield’s record label. Elly is also the Director of Moorehouse Dance Studio and has studios set up in Christchurch and Brisbane. Two dance crews, Swarm and Reality, will be putting on performances at the conclusion of the workshops. Swarm have performed at various arts and cultural festivals in New Zealand, Australia, USA, Korea and Singapore and are known for their dynamic, energetic and inspiring shows. They have opened for or performed alongside artists such as Guy Sebastian, Keri Hilson, 50 Cent, Lloyd, Bow Wow and Mase, to name a few. Cost is $15 for all three workshops or $5 each. The performance at the end is free for parents and friends to watch. (See advertisement and workshop times on next page)

IBIS - a solo exhibition by Selwyn Teen, Henry Turner Henry’s Turner’s first solo exhibition at Selwyn Gallery, featuring realist and surrealist painting, drawing, prints and sculpture. Selwyn Gallery, Darfield, Friday 5 February – Thursday 3 March 2016 Henry Turner is Canterbury’s wunderkind and Selwyn Gallery is thrilled to hold his first solo exhibition here. Barely a teenager, Henry has already achieved so much in his career as an artist and Selwyn Gallery has received many enquiries about this show. Henry is passionate about nature, art and the environment and is equally concerned about conservation, sponsoring the set up of a trap-line for Arthurs Pass Conservation Trust with money from his art sales. He has been an acute observer and an artist since his earliest days. He loves the pageantry and drama of the theatre and circus and in this exhibition one can see how he brings the two together. “Ibis’ shows us his love of nature, and birds in particular, both in the realist depictions we have come to recognize from Henry, and also a new and exciting surrealist departure. Also we can hope to see some sculpture this time around. The media have come to know and respect Henry Turner; he has received many awards and recognition

World Buskers Roadshow A Huge Success The First World Buskers Roadshow in Selwyn took place on 20 January at the Lincoln Event Centre & Domain, Lincoln. The day was a fantastic success, attracting a large number (c. 1,500) of Selwyn locals who enjoyed a funny, high quality programme of entertainment by the international professional buskers and amazing local talent in a perfect setting. Local performers, Ashy Batchelor, Holly Kimber, Cingston and Manaia Davies were exceptional and the response from the crowd reflected this. The food vendors produced beautiful food and the summer sun added to the atmosphere. Later in the day the comedy club attracted a different crowd with the MC—”Go Canada” really getting the crowd going with her quick and quirky one– liners. The acts engaged fully with the crowd—and also took the time to inspire and engage with the young Selwyn local acts. The entertainers commented at the end of the show that they had enjoyed this day the most of any performances they have done this season. The Lincoln Event Centre & Domain was the perfect facility to hold this event for our community with plenty of room for the many guests who attended.
