Kia Ora We have a full month ahead in Selwyn on the arts scene. We kick off the month with three key concerts, Music on the Green Darfield and Rolleston and the first Selwyn District Rock Concert. There are many exhibitions around the district this month at our local galleries and we have Mel Parsons back in town briefly, teaming up with old friends for her popular woolshed tours. Lincoln University and Lincoln High School both have great events on and entries are now open for the annual Arts Heart Exhibition. We also see the first of a series of “Arts on Tour events at the Lincoln Laboratory. With such a jam packed month there is no time for boredom! As always I encourage you to get out and support these events, as they are here for your entertainment! Which brings me to my next topic - Why the arts are a great way to spend your time. I'm not just speaking about going along to an event as part of an audience - I am talking about volunteering. Our district is so full of established and wonderful organisations that are keen to continue creating and embracing the arts but there is a need in our district - for volunteers. Why volunteer? My favourite reason would be - . To make a difference: By giving your time to enable others to enjoy, participate in and appreciate the arts, you can really make a difference in your community. Engagement in arts activities is proven to bring a wide range of benefits to participants, such as learning new skills, increased confidence and opportunities to socialise and meet others, as well as an increased sense of achievement and well-being. The arts help to build a stronger sense of identity, heritage and togetherness within communities. We are not talking about a huge commitment - maybe just an hour a month. So I encourage you to think about how valuable your contribution could be. Rachael Inch - Arts Coordinator

Ministry of the Mind Selwyn Rock Concert
This event is the first of an annual event for Selwyn District. The purpose is to showcase the local bands in Selwyn district and wider Canterbury area. It is a rock concert made up of four bands, (2 Selwyn district bands and 2 Christchurch bands) This concert gives these bands an avenue to a Selwyn District audience and also gives the people of the Selwyn district the opportunity to enjoy and see what is going on in their own community The concept was born after the earth quakes. Local resident and Selwyn Arts Trust Trustee, Duncan Sole, created the open mic nights in the Rolleston rugby clubrooms as a way for the musicians and fans of music to be able to get together and play, listen and talk about music. Once they up and running, Duncan wanted to create an event to showcase these amazing and talented. Duncan has spent a lot of time in ChCh City helping promote bands and working with them to help get them going. The long term goal is to turn this into an annual event with the hope of attracting some bigger names to headline the concerts. This will give our local musicians the opportunity to be part of something big and give them some exposure. The event is funded by the Selwyn District Council. The venue and time of day is to encourage families and people of all ages to come along and enjoy some truly word class local music. Local Business ‘THE LABORATORY’ is on the border of the Lincoln Green and will be open, offering guests a full range of refreshments and good food.

An Exhibition of Photography Maja Moritz, Sara-Jane Victoria Ludemann and Bianca van Leeuwen. Selwyn Gallery, Darfield, Friday 4 March – Thursday 31 March 2016 Opening Night Friday 4 March at 6pm. The subtleties and grandeur of the natural world have always been a source of interest for Bianca van Leeuwen. Her work has long dealt with themes of place, time, perception and repetition with an emphasis on man-made interjections within the natural landscape, echoing the idea of the human urge to impose order on nature: an object or end that is not only destructive but fundamentally unrealiseable. These ideas have been developed through the use of a range of media, beginning in traditional forms of printmaking before combining this with digital photography and film. In her most recent work Bianca has focused on darkroom based photographic techniques using negatives from a pinhole camera and liquid emulsion on a range of surfaces to create both prints and installations on found objects. In this exhibition we see her work on paper.
Maja Moritz' background is in photojournalism with more than three decades of experience in photography. She has travelled extensively, covering top sports events such as the Olympic Games, numerous world championships, World Cups and other major sports events. Born in Germany Maja now calls New Zealand home, living here since 2004 and being in love with the wonderful nature around us, she is now focusing on developing ‘nature art photography’, the touring of the ‘43 NZ Authors’ exhibition and workshops, training, tutoring and mentoring. This exhibition features Maja's photographic artwork about our 'oneness' with nature. Maja enjoys looking for symbolic meaning, drawing out the ‘essence’ of a subject. Her passion is revealing meaning beyond words though her photography.
Sara-Jane Victoria Ludemann has so far led a very busy life raising six children, nursing her Father, Mother and Sister and was a front line member of St John for thirty years. Now at the age of seventy-two, Sara-Jane has decided it is time to pursue her love of photography and Selwyn Gallery is delighted to host her first exhibition. SaraJane spends many hours wandering in the bush, climbing hills and lying in long grass to get the perfect shot, flora and fauna being her passion. Birds are her favourite subjects as they stretch photographic skills to the limit. Clearly loving a challenge, Sara-Jane has embraced the change from film to digital photography, transitioning from the darkroom to a computer. For Sara-Jane photography is the simultaneous recognition, in a fraction of a second, of the significance of an event.
‘A stunning photographic exhibition of nature, viewed from three perspectives - a must see’ says Ingrid Cole, Arts Coordinator. Please do come along to the Official Opening on Friday 4 March, from 6 – 7pm to be among the first to see the work. We will be open daily (except Mondays) from 10am to 4pm for the duration of this exhibition. An exhibition programme will be available on the gallery's website www.selwyngallery.co.nz or from the gallery and you can check us out on Facebook (Selwyn Gallery).
Music On The Green— Rolleston Reserve,Saturday 19th March 2016, 6 - 9 PM Mari Slack ; Alex Hardy ; The Reconstruction ; Cingston Brown. Mari Slack Pop meets punk, rock meets funk, Mari Slack is all about music! Though you'd think sitting in the pop-rock genre would make her sound like everyone else, Mari stands out with her power-vocals, her heart-felt and sometimes raw lyrics, and her love for the use of bizarre and unexpected chords. Add to this the power and grit provided by the band and you're left with one amazing sound-scape. Mari has performed at highschools throughout Christchurch and at various conferences and events in her homeland of Norway. She's soloed with a choir of up to 150 people, and has even briefly featured on satellite TV in Egypt. However, after years of performing other people's songs Mari found her own voice and launched out as a solo artist in 2013. Influences: Paramore, Demi Lovato, Mutemath, Björk,No Doubt, Avril Lavigne

Arts on Tour - Eb and Sparrow at the Laboratory- Lincoln Eb & Sparrow might hail from Wellington city, but their heart and musical home is set firmly in the country. With their pastoral, expansive ballads, rollicking good-time songs and a few tear inducing torch burners thrown in for good measure, the five-piece led by Ebony Lamb have been travelling up and down the country for the past three years. Slowly making their way to each and every town that'll have them, they've been winning over New Zealand audiences not only with their songs, but also with their cheeky wit, oft-hilarious tales and dynamite performances. Follow up on successful Hip Hop Workshops
Two hip hop/breakdancing workshops spread over two weekends supported by Creative Communities and The Selwyn District Council were huge success. Over 120 children of all ages participated over the two days. Three workshops each run by Manaia, KBigs and Elly were a massive hit and everyone enjoyed themselves while learning new moves. There was a performance at the end from REALITY and SWARM, where the whole community were able to come and watch for free and this was a fantastic opportunity for the kids to get inspired by others who have been training for a long time. The feedback from the community was that it was a great environment and atmosphere for kids of all ages to have a go at learning hip hop/breakdancing. “I felt like both Darfield and Rolleston communities really supported the event and we were constantly asked whether there would be any on going events in the future. As this was a dream of Manaia’s to get hip hop out to Selwyn and for kids to be able to get the opportunity to be inspired by what she loves to do, I feel like we have succeeded.” Says Yerane (Manaia’s mother)

Sue Wright, John Boyd and Deanna Griffiths showing 2 March - 27 March Paintings of mixed subjects and nature. A fusion of styles enable the viewer to enjoy an innovative exhibition. A mix of paintings and clay sculptures. Sue Wright “I like my work to represent a subject, whether a landscape, building or life painting, using both texture and colour. All subjects I find are enjoyable and challenging as I am self-taught.” Sue started painting 18 years ago in England sending small water colours to her young grandchildren in New Zealand. For 13 years now she has lived in Lincoln. John Boyd worked as a Civil Engineer for many years and, later in his career, qualified as a Landscape Architect. Johns drawings in this exhibition are to proclaim and celebrate the beauty of women’s bodies. “I have been sculpting portrait heads and figures in clay for a long time as a hobby and, initially, life drawing was largely an aid to this. I began to do it for its own sake when I joined the Cramner Studio Group where I was able to draw regularly in energising company with excellent models. My enjoyment comes from the immediate expression on paper of my response to the model’s presence – a process which, in its apparent simplicity, remains a source of wonder to me. “ Johns drawings have been sold in various galleries including the Bealey and Gallery O in Christchurch, as well as the Monterey Gallery in Auckland. He has also had successful solo exhibitions at the Cloisters Gallery in The Arts Centre in Christchurch. In recent years john has given drawings to the Women’s Refuge and the Medical Research Foundation where they have been auctioned for up to $2,300. Deanna Griffiths Currently living in Methven, Mid Canterbury, with her family. “I’ve been working with clay for eight years now. I love working with a 3D material and the way I can continue to build and challenge myself. I love nature and I get lots of inspiration from the beautiful countryside around Methven, as well as trips to see my family in Stewart Island with it’s amazing scenery and family history.”
