May 2016 — ISSUE Thirteen

Notes from the Arts Advisor Arts Coordinator Notes Kia ora Just over midway through the year and the arts scene in Selwyn shows no sign of stopping! Recently the Selwyn District Council held a working artist workshop at the Lincoln Event Centre. This was a huge success and over 67 creatives all agreed to meet again with future workshops. Matariki was also held for the first time and was a sellout with over 300 people. Don’t forget that 04 – 10 July is Māori language week! Check out Selwyn Libraries for basic greetings. www.selwynlibraries.co.nz

Over the July school holidays we see lots of opportunities for children to immerse themselves in the arts during the Kidsfest activities and with what the various community groups in Selwyn are doing. Following on with the Youth theme we see a great showcase of youth talent in Selwyn at “Winterval”. Winterval—Youth Music Festival Sunday, 24 July 2016 from 4pm to 8:30pm, Lincoln Event Centre - 15 Meijer Drive, Lincoln, 7608 Aestival is an evening showcasing local youth held in Selwyn, New Zealand, in January each year. Originally just a summer event, New Zealand weather and encouragement from locals has inspired an indoor mid-winter evening, which we like to call 'Winterval", the interval between aestivals. Aestival was founded in 2015, the idea starting at the local high school's music evening; so much talent, and so few opportunities! It was decided by the youth that they needed to do something, to have some kind of event where talented youth from Selwyn and beyond could perform for an audience, get their names out there and hone their skills. Now for the second year running, and supported by the Selwyn Youth Council, Selwyn Arts Trust and Arts Heart, Aestival will be showcasing talented youth and accomplished musicians from all over New Zealand. This is a completely non-profit event, and all funds from ticket sales will go to the musicians, as a big thank you for their time, and to support their future music ventures. Tickets are available on Eventbrite, and at the door. www.eventbrite.co.nz/e/winterval-music-festival-tickets

Floral Group, Springston An enthusiastic group of Springston Floral Art members met at Springston Hall on the 19th May to meet the challenge to create an 'Impose' design. An 'Impose' design means members are asked to create a design with identical materials which are supplied by the club.Similar to 'Master Chef' not knowing the ingredients beforehand. On this occasion members selected their container (so to speak) from a huge pile of interesting pieces of driftwood. Other plant materials of muehlenbeckia, flax, leucadendron as well as the focal point of mauve hued small brassica heads complimented the design. This was a really fun night as members needed to be creative 'on the spot' with the plant material supplied. Springston Floral Art Group meet monthly at Springston Hall on the 3rd Thursday of the month. In the winter months June, July, August, the club meets at 7pm. Come along and observe if you wish, just give us a call to let us know you are coming. If you are interested in this art form, contact: Shirley Barnes 03 347 3441 or Jenny Benny 03 329 5635

Selwyn Gallery Exhibition Philip Beadle, Pamela Hueston, Vicki Knudsen 1-28 July 2016. Opening Friday 1 July 6pm – all welcome An exhibition of nudes. Philip Beadle works in oil, water-colour, dry-point and monotype. His immediate environment is Christchurch, where he lives, with its cityscapes, the Canterbury Plains, the Southern Alps and Banks Peninsula - all sources of subject matter and inspiration. Philip regularly travels and paints around New Zealand and has had several trips overseas gathering material from which he has painted. “Capturing the light striking a range of subject matter has always interested me whether it is the landscape, nude or cityscapes. I'm interested in our emotional response to the often fleeting memories we retain of something we have seen and how it affected us” says Philip. Light is very important to him and he enjoys painting in a warm low evening or winter light to resolve form, colour and light, creating exciting painting surfaces with abstract qualities. Painting for pleasure started in 1995 for Pamela Hueston, when she joined the Akaroa Art Group. The beautiful scenery of Banks Peninsula was inspirational to her and Pamela went to many weekend schools run by the Ashburton Art Society. After the tragic death of her youngest son Tim, Pam fulfilled her lifetime dream of formal art training. She attended Aoraki Polytechnic in Timaru for five years, with part time tuition by the renowned artist Paul Van den Bergh, resulting in a Diploma in Painting and a Diploma in Fine Art with distinction. Pamela describes herself as a realist but likes to combine the abstract in to her work, using predominantly oils, “I am basically a Realist although I explore the abstract world and hopefully can combine a bit of both. I love the beauty of form, the rhythm, movement, the song and flow in painting.” In this exhibition, Vicki Knudsen uses the models she has drawn at The Cranmer and Ilam Life Drawing groups that she attends. After sketching, she transfers chosen pieces into paintings or drawings on cotton paper at home. The paintings that follow often take on their own identity and bear little resemblance to the original, artistic license comes into play. Vicki has exhibited many times in mostly group exhibitions both here at Selwyn Gallery, Oxford Gallery, Southland Art Society and as guest artists for the Ashburton Art Society as well as receiving various awards along the way. The Gallery will be open daily (except Mondays) from 10am to 4pm for the duration of this exhibition. Please do come along to the Official Opening on Friday 1 July at 6pm. An exhibition programme will be available from the Gallery - and you can check us out on Facebook www.facebook.com/Selwyngallery.

Ellesmere Art Group— Art Classes ELLESMERE ART GROUP, run by Jill Lemon and Averil Southward is well underway for 2016 and look forward to a busy and productive year for members. This group is a great example of the wonderful support that Creative communities give the arts in Selwyn. Through assistance from the scheme, they are very pleased to have secured a local art tutor for lessons, Bryan Davies, on 13 and 27 July focusing on pastels and drawing.

Bryan Davies is an excellent teacher and encourages people to really look at everyday subjects to see the colours, textures and contours. Jill and Averil will again be holding school holiday art days in the July school break. The school holiday art/craft days are being run on Tuesday 12 and 19 July for 9 – 12 year olds, limited to 15 pupils, to be held at the RSA rooms 10am – 3pm at $5 per day. New members are always welcome and can join on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month in the Sudeley Park Sports Room, Irwell from 10am – 2pm. If you are not sure if you wish to give art a go why not just go along and check it out – they are always happy to get newcomers started up. If you wish to come along to any of the tutoring days then a booking is essential as the numbers for those days will be limited. A fee of $30 per day is requested for a tutored day or $50 for 2 days.
