May 2016 — ISSUE Thirteen

Notes from the Coordinator Kia ora This past month has gone so fast and momentum in the arts community shows no signs of slowing! In April I was honoured to be invited to the Art in Oceania art exhibition which featured works from famous Chinese artists as a way to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Christchurch and Wuhan sister city relationship. The exhibition was a wonderful example of how art has no boundaries and how different cultures can come together despite language barriers. The exhibition definitely made an impact on me particularly when thinking of all the different people living in Selwyn and the importance of the use of the arts to bring the community together. Selwyn has a rich Maori culture. On Saturday 21 May, Lincoln event centre will host the Waitaha Senior Kapa haka competitions. Teams from across the Waitaha region (from Kaikoura to Bluff) will compete for the honour of representing Waitaha at Te Matatini the premier national Kapa haka event to be hosted in the Hawkes Bay in 2017.

“Teams from across the Waitaha region (from Kaikoura to Bluff) will compete for the honour of representing Waitaha at Te Matatini the premier national Kapa haka event to be hosted in the Hawkes Bay in 2017.

This coming month is also NZ music month May - and what a fitting way to launch the new “Selwyn Arts Calendar” in the Central Canterbury News than with a huge lineup of music events to attend in Selwyn. The Arts Calendar will be produced monthly and will feature main art events happening across Selwyn. So feel free to immerse yourself in all the arts and culture you can this month and most importantly please enjoy what Selwyn has to offer. Rachael Inch - Arts Advisor/Coordinator

Chinese Art in Oceania Chinese Art in Oceania Exhibition— 15 April to 18 April at The Undercroft at James Hight Library, University of Canterbury I was privileged to attend the opening of a very special art exhibition by famous Chinese artists Changzhong Jiang, Ling Qin, Feng Fan, Xiaohong Xie over the weekend. The works were beautiful and well received by all who attended. The works were created using traditional Chinese inks, each stroke of the brush in seemingly random direction formed a deliberate image that left the viewer feeling a connection with the subject matter.

Through cultural interaction and making friends by way of art, a new bridge of friendship has been erected between China and New Zealand. Wielding pens and brushes and reaching great harmony of culture, they bond together to express the charms of the natural landscapes of human civilization. This painting exhibition serves as a medium to promote prosperity through culture and drive bilateral exchange and cooperation to a new level. Art is without boundaries.

Works on Paper & in Glass. Lorraine Natusch, Georgie You and Ben Reid Saturday 30 April – Thursday 26 May 2016 (Selwyn Gallery) Lorraine Natusch was born and raised in Darfield but has lived in various places in New Zealand and London. Natusch has always studied art, with night classes and as a full time adult student at Rotorua and Christchurch Polytechnics. It was while living in Auckland that Natusch was introduced to glass casting using the 'lost wax' method. After moving back to Darfield, Natusch set about converting her Great Grandfather's Clydesdale stable into a studio. Master Glass classes with overseas tutors has enabled Natusch to broaden her skills. A major birthday late last year inspired Natusch to start on a new series of work and incorporate several of the techniques. Her new direction features ‘Cityscapes’ inspired by architecture seen on a recent trip to Canada and New York, and vessels using a 'drop out' method, where several fused glass layers are suspended and heated, with gravity taking over. Opaque or transparent qualities, as well as different colours, melt at different rates. Therefore each piece is fired independently, several times and timed individually to watch results as they happen. Natusch has exhibited widely and won awards including prizes in Darfield Art Week and The Royal Easter Show in Auckland. Georgie Youl has studied fashion drawing and design, and Multi-media broadcasting, and currently works in marketing, in the film and entertainment industry, for a 3D and design visualization software company. Working with Film and TV effects has inspired her to explore points of intersection between art, design and 3D visualization, for visual storytelling, using a combination of craft and fine art to create hand crafted 3 dimensional paper works. Photography is an important component in her work and her black and white photograph “Nature” was chosen for the International Exposure Photo Awards book Black & White Collection. The photography presented within this collection was honoured at a private reception at the Louvre Museum, Paris on 13 July 2015. Youl’s exhibition at Selwyn Gallery includes a series combining painting, prints from archived 1900s book covers, and paper crafting and carving. Using evocative vintage photography, inter-weaved with literary images, haunting images of intrigue are created. Youl uses alternative photography techniques combined with painting and illustration, and carves the paper into organic 3D shapes, taken from thousands of leaves she has collected and photographed. Youl has works in private collections in New Zealand, the United States, and the United Kingdom. She currently lives and works from her home studio in Canterbury. This is Youl’s first public exhibition in New Zealand. Ben Reid is a mixed media artist and printmaker whose interest lies in the fragile relationship that New Zealanders have with the natural environment. The subject of Reid’s work have encompassed hunting trophies, Victorian wallpaper patterns, native flora and fauna, exotic predators, Butcher shop signs, rabbits, three ducks up the wall, wild deer, a lighthouse keeper’s cat and birds such as the endangered Brown Teal and the extinct Steads Bush Wren. Reid brings together a myriad of references that draw attention to the complexity of a relationship with the natural world that has been both exploitative and beneficial to humanity. Reid recognises there are no easy solutions yet his images retain a faith in the redemption of this relationship with nature. Reid graduated from Christchurch Polytechnic with a Visual Arts Degree in 2005 and has assisted master printmaker Marian Maguire at PaperGraphica. He exhibits on a regular bases throughout New Zealand, and his work is held in both public and private collections nationally and internationally. Selwyn Gallery will be open daily (except Mondays) from 10am to 4pm for the duration of this exhibition. Please do come along to the official opening on Saturday 30 April at 3pm. facebook.com/Selwyngallery.

“Our

boys become confident young

men through being coached by experienced music mentors and being surrounded by some excellent role models. Throughout all the accomplishments, lasting friendships are made and many of our members go on to the National Secondary Schools' Choir and the National Youth Choir.” Choir Boys Performing

World Class Performance in Darfield in May The boys of Christchurch Cathedral’s Choir of Men and Boys will perform at Trinity Church Darfield on Saturday, 21 May at 6.00pm. The performance will include a brief choral evensong, one of the regular services that the boy choristers perform in the Cathedral, as well as a recital of music from their extensive repertoire. This will be the first opportunity for Malvern residents to hear the choir in this locale since a performance in Hororata several years ago. The 18 choir boys range in age from eight to 13 years. During school terms they attend ten rehearsals and sing six services each week. In addition, the choir is in demand for civic functions, concerts, and recitals. Today, the Cathedral Choir of Men and Boys is the only choir of its kind in New Zealand. All boy choristers receive scholarships to attend Cathedral Grammar School. The choir and choir school were founded six months in advance of ChristChurch Cathedral’s consecration on 1 November 1881, as a choir based on the English cathedral tradition was deemed essential for a Cathedral consecration service. Following the devastating earthquake in February 2011, the Cathedral Choir continued a reduced schedule at Christ’s College Chapel, and performed regularly throughout Canterbury. In August 2013 the Transitional Cathedral (named the “Cardboard Cathedral” because of the striking cardboard tubes in its structure) was opened and the boy choristers resumed the full schedule of Cathedral worship there. The Choir is led by John Linker, Director of Music at Christchurch Cathedral in Christchurch. John holds B.Mus. and M.Mus. degrees, and is currently for Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Cincinnati. – This performance in Darfield fits John’s goal to increase awareness of the Cathedral Choir programme locally (as well as nationally and internationally).

AOTNZ – “Into the East” Showing in two Selwyn Locations They were an unexpected hit when they toured with Arts On Tour NZ last year. Well known and loved in Southland for their country based folk influenced spirited up-tempo tunes and soulful ballads, it took a tour outside Invercargill for the rest of the country to wake up to Into the East's talent. Featuring gently picked guitar one minute, bouncing percussion the next, their songs have struck a chord with audiences all over the country, leading to support slots for Tami Neilson, Neil Finn and the Topp Twins among others, and offers to tour internationally. Liv McBride and Graeme Woller have been writing and performing together for 12 years and it shows. In 2014 they were crowned National Country Music Duo of the Year and nominated for the 2014 Taite Music Prize as well as 2014 Best NZ Folk Album for Fight from the Inside. "Their songs are catchy, with a honeyed fusion of harmonies that are sweet music for the ears. Liv McBride's voice has a rich, dulcet tone that wraps itself around Graeme Woller's beautifully controlled vocals. The two voices meld together in an effortless dynamic." ON Mag "McBride is the voice that races ahead excited, Woller is the anchor; he pulls back just a tad together they find the perfect place to pitch and rest each song. They have a great range of influences - but they sound wholly like themselves." Dominion Post Into the East are performing on: Saturday 28 May, 7pm Darfield Primary School Hall $5, 15 and under free Book at: any branch of Selwyn Libraries www.selwynlibraries.co.nz Monday 30 May, 8pm The Laboratory, Lincoln $15 Book at: Eventfinda or at the Laboratory
