Kia Ora This past month I have been busy finalising details for the Summer in Selwyn Music on the Green Concerts, World Buskers Festival and planning for developing writing workshops early 2016. Another highlight for my work this month was an interview that I was involved in with the "In the Loop" podcast series, where I was able to talk about our district and its established arts network. One question that came up was about funding for the arts - Are the arts funded WELL enough? It seems like time and time again those in the arts sector have to justify the relevance and benefits of the arts in order to receive more funding. I smile every time I am asked this, because I look at it as an opportunity to remind everyone that the Arts are a part of us more than we realise. Take the people I come across everyday and you will see the sense of self worth, joy and passion that the arts brings to our lives. Whether it be watching a serious novel writer become animated, passionate and excited When his/her creativity is acknowledged, or the brilliant crafter who works on their passion every day without being noticed. Watch the talented designer as he/she describe with excited energy their attendance at a painting course where they received much needed acknowledgement for their talent, or the young musician who is living his/her dream singing for a crowd - the arts sure do bring a sense of self worth to both individuals and to the community. So when I am asked to justify what the arts bring to a community - yes I sit back and smile and think to myself - shouldn't the question be— “What can the community bring to the arts?”

Selwyn Gallery—Darfield Summer Stock Exhibition featuring works by Sarah Deans with Jane Thomas, Fiona Moore and MCAC artist members. This is an exhibition featuring artworks in all styles and mediums, available for immediate sale and removal. Selwyn Gallery Darfield, 5 December – 28 January 2016

Selwyn Gallery is delighted to host a Summer holiday exhibition of artworks from our MCAC artist members in styles and mediums to suit all tastes. Featured are artists Sarah Deans, Jane Thomas and Fiona Moore. All works available for immediate sale. Sarah Deans was born into a family of professional artists and is a painter herself, known for her depictions of flowers and landscapes. She studied at Canterbury University and at London’s Inchbald School of Design. After a busy period of study and solo exhibitions, Sarah established the highly regarded Sarah Deans Art School at the Christchurch Arts Centre. Recently returned after over 10 successful years in Sydney, Australia, where she established a second School, Sarah has returned to her roots in Canterbury, New Zealand. Sarah exhibits widely in New Zealand and continues to paint and teach. She will be in the Gallery on Saturday 12 December from 10am – 1pm, giving an hourly floor talk about her work.

Fiona Moore is a Darfield based artist, exhibiting with us for the first time at the Gallery. She is an emerging artist and enjoys painting different subjects, with flowers and birds being a favourite. In the last year Fiona has attended several workshops with artist Min Kim, who has also exhibited at Selwyn Gallery. Min’s teaching has inspired Fiona to be the best that she can be. The last couple of years have brought considerable success and recognition for Fiona, with exhibits at the Kaiapoi Art Expo, and one year receiving a people’s choice award. Since then private commissions have kept Fiona busy. Jane Thomas enjoys the challenges of painting in watercolour. An early attempt at scientific illustration, and an interest in geology focused her attention particularly on the abstract patterns in nature. With our earthquakes, the previously hidden ‘skeletons’ of buildings and patterns of ruins have been revealed, forming the basis of Jane’s earthquake series of the last five years. The Victorian artistry of Chistchurch’s disappearing architecture has presented new challenges and has resulted in, among other subjects, the medallion series from Wade’s Brewery on Fitzgerald Avenue, which had been rescued by John and Brenda McVicar. Jane Thomas is very grateful for the support of the art groups to which she belongs: West Melton, Rangiora, the former town and Country Association, and the Malvern Arts Council.

Selwyn Gallery will be open daily (except Mondays) from 10am to 4pm for the duration of this exhibition. Closed for Christmas from 24 – 28 December incl. and again from 1 – 4 January 2016 incl. An exhibition programme will be available on the gallery's website www.selwyngallery.co.nz Or from the gallery and you can check us out on Facebook (Selwyn Gallery).
