I am pleased to present this to you as part of my plan to generate a greater awareness of what is happening on the arts scene in Selwyn. This past few weeks I have been busy collating information, meeting people and helping people in the community raise their profiles as artists and Arts organisations. I have created a social media profile and we achieved a fantastic following in the first few weeks. This is part of my first strategy to get the information out to the people as quickly as possible. Please pop over and like and share

our page if you haven't done so already. And be sure to let me know of your page so that I can do the same. www.facebook.com/ Artsinselwyn

is involved in the arts or loves the arts are well supported and have access to the resources they need to continue making an impact on our community.

Of note I have been updating the website to create a central information point for our artists. The idea behind this is to provide an accessible central database of information for everyone. I plan to list all artists on this.

Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help you and please make sure you register your details on the website to be listed as an artist in Selwyn.—Remember that is any kind of artist from musicians, dance, craft, visual, tutors, organisations, groups etc—There is no limit, so let’s work together to make Selwyn known for its arts scene.

Over the coming months I would like to profile the organisations in the district through these newsletters and really support all of the arts across the board. So I want to make sure that everyone who

What happened in March? March saw some wonderful events happening within Selwyn, from exhibitions to live music, house concerts to special talks, craft classes and bands playing—The Selwyn Arts scene has been alive and buzzing! The highlights of the month included some wonderful exhibitions on the visual arts scene, like the Tai Tapu Sculpture garden exhibition and the Arts Heart Annual

Exhibition. We saw the Mistlewood Gallery in Southbridge launch a series of house concerts and the Nutpoint Centre host many talented musicians. There was a fabulous selection of bands playing throughout the district too.

Sculpted, Drawn & Painted Animals April is the month for animals at Selwyn Gallery, with works from Stephen Robinson, Amelia Guild, Elaine McDonald and Andrew Lyons.

Artwork by Amelia Guild.

Artwork by Andrew Lyons.

Stephen Robinson is a selftaught artist specialising in fish and game. His realistic depictions of wildlife are mostly in his favoured medium of pencil and pastel. He has been drawing since he was a child in the UK, and has had many commissions over the years there. Thankfully with more free time here in New Zealand he is able to indulge his passion and continue to produce his beautiful artwork. Amelia Guild grew up on a high country station in the Rakaia Gorge where her fondness for animals was born. She received a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Otago, achieving majors in

both Art History & Theory and Theatre Studies. Amelia has had several exhibitions and large commissions since leaving, and has also had success in her other passion of acting. Amelia is committed to developing her style by exploring new ways of bringing her subject matter to life, constantly seeking inspiration from animals and her ever changing interest in colour, texture and medium. Elaine McDonald’s paintings pay testimony to her love of and response to colours. They are a reflection of her interest in the outdoors. Painting with watercolour, acrylic and oils, Elaine’s work is largely realistic in style. Elaine began painting ten years ago and is self-taught. She has consistently sold her paintings of flowers, animals and landscapes at a range of venues over the last several years.

Andrew Lyons is an awardwinning sculptor and works with a wide variety of materials. He particularly likes to reveal the beauty in wood with its varied grains and colours. Andrew was born in Christchurch in 1952. After leaving school he trained as a cabinetmaker achieving advanced trade certificate. He is a great lover of the natural world where he gains most of his inspiration for his works and he likes to include a bit of fun and humour. Andrew’s work is in collections around the world and he exhibits regularly. The exhibition runs: Saturday 4 April – Thursday 30 April 2015. The Gallery will be open daily (except Mondays and Easter Friday and Easter Sunday) from 10am to 4pm for the duration of this exhibition. An exhibition programme will be available on the gallery's website www.selwyngallery.co.nz
