“It is more than bigness that should be our goal. We must attempt, rather, to bring people back to the warmth of community, to the worth of individual effort and responsibility and of individuals working together as a community, to better their lives and their children’s future.” Robert F. Kennedy
Dear ASD Community Members, On behalf of the Board of Trustees and the entire faculty and staff of ASD, it’s a pleasure to welcome you to the 2017 ASD Carnival. The 1960s, the decade during which the school was first founded (1966), has been the source for the theme that has guided planning for the event this year. PEACE LOVE ASD! represents a theme that is so important in the life of our school community. An evening like the one to be experienced at the 2017 ASD Carnival would not be possible without an amazing group of deeply caring, dedicated and committed volunteers. ASD is so fortunate to have an amazing group of parents, teachers and students who comprise the Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) and who have committed their time, effort and energy to creating an event where we can gather and enjoy time together. The planning for the 2017 Carnival began almost a year ago and tonight all of that planning and hard work once again comes together to create an event we know will be enjoyable for you and your entire family. As you participate in the wide variety of activities that are represented at the 2017 Carnival, please take a few moments to pause and reflect upon what it means to be a member of the ASD community. Please also look for a volunteer and thank them for what their hard work has made possible for all of us to experience. Few schools in the world have the strong sense of community and purpose you will experience at the 2017 Carnival. I encourage you to reflect upon what it means for us to come together and celebrate as a community drawn together by our shared aspirations for the future. Thank you for participating in this event. PTSA will dedicate the funds raised from the Carnival to further extend, enrich and enhance the quality of learning experiences that are made available to students throughout the upcoming 2017-2018 school year. In this, our 50th anniversary year, I would encourage you to look for ways in which you, too, can give back to the school for the express purpose of further improving the nature of the learning experiences made available to our students. We share an abiding commitment to challenging and inspiring each student to achieve their dreams and to becoming a passionate learner prepared to adapt and contribute in a rapidly changing world. It is with a hope for PEACE and LOVE that we welcome you to the 2017 ASD Carnival! Sincerely,
Brent Mutsch Superintendent

A longstanding ASD tradition, Carnival represents ASD’s largest annual community building event. With the participation of students, families, faculty and staff, administration, alumni, community partners, and friends, Carnival truly brings our entire community together. Whether this is your first time attending the ASD Carnival or you have attended many times before, when you look across the field during the event you will undoubtedly be inspired by the wonderful spirit of our school community and how blessed we each are to be a part of it.

s, e pa tT re en r nt Carnival 2017 is finally here, a s, P fa e and we couldn’t be more excited to celebrate with all of you! th This year’s groovy 1960s theme – “PEACE. LOVE. ASD!” – honors the year in which our school was founded 50 years ago.
The funds raised through Carnival help to fuel PTSA events, programs and resources. Each year’s proceeds enable PTSA to organize the following year’s Carnival, Halloween Trick-or-Treat Night, Santa’s Workshop, Staff Appreciation Week, Grants Program, Speaker Series for Parents, Cheers & Tears Welcome receptions, Wall Calendar, and more. An event of this magnitude would not be possible without the commitment, talent and energy of so many volunteers. Please join me in extending a huge ‘thank you’ to Carnival Chair Sheryl Porbanderwalla and the members of the PTSA Carnival Committee who have been very hard at work for many months to bring you a spectacular evening. We applaud our fantastic students and student-led organizations, all the talented performers who will be taking the stage, all of our vendors and service-providers, our sponsors and donors for their generous contributions, our administration and faculty for their continuous support, and our amazing school staff who help put all the pieces of Carnival in place! We appreciate your participation and support in making Carnival 2017 an evening to remember! Thank you for all you do to build community at ASD! Have a fabulous evening – it’s gonna be outta sight! Happy 50th Anniversary, ASD! Peace and love,

Dear ASD Community, This is my third year at the American School of Dubai and my second opportunity to serve as Carnival Chair. I would like to take a moment to thank all the incredible people who come together to make Carnival such a great community event. This year I would especially like to give a shout out to Marta Fonseca, who has efficiently woven every thread to keep PTSA Events streamlined and effective. She works tirelessly behind the scenes and has been an invaluable support in preparing for this Carnival. To Marta: You are a rock, and your support and planning is hugely appreciated! To Steve Jones, Janine Hanekom, Radha and her team: Thank you! We know the long hours you all put in and we cannot do it without you. To our Student Organizations: Thank you for coming together to always put on a great show with your creative ideas! To our Thespian Officers, Hyun, Paige, Seth, Caroline and Salem: Thank you for going the extra mile this year; we love and appreciate all you do. To the Carnival Committee: Thank you for coming together to make another Carnival a great success! You are a group of talented women who each bring your individual flair to the mix. You know how to stay on course and have fun at the same time. I am grateful to have worked with you all. Finally, to the entire ASD community: We need to continue to go the extra mile, to touch that one soul so that we can keep the inspiration chain alive. Starting now, let’s make memories for the next 50 years! Peace, Love, ASD!
Sheryl Porbanderwalla PTSA Carnival Chair
The PTSA Carnival would not be possible without the involvement of our entire ASD community! We are deeply grateful to our PTSA Donor Families, food vendors and raffle prize donors for their commitment and support. These donations enable PTSA to fund programs and activities that build community and directly impact student learning. PTSA is fortunate to have the unwavering support of our ASD faculty and staff, who helped make Carnival 2017 a reality: all the teachers, everyone in Campus Recreation, Office of Advancement, Facilities & Operations, IT, the Business Office, and the ES Copy Room. As always, the support and leadership of Dr. Mutsch, Mr. Advento, Dr. Lalonde, and Dr. Leever have been invaluable. PTSA celebrates our students, because it is their involvement that brings Carnival to life! From student organizations and stage performers to class project creators to the Thespian Officers serving as Masters of Ceremonies, we appreciate your passion and participation! Thanks also to CAST for their support of the Arts community — and a special thanks to Sherri Fergus, Lara Rennie and Maya Saoud for managing the stage. Finally, we applaud the parent volunteers who are the backbone of the PTSA — from the members of the Carnival Committee for their enthusiasm, energy and dedication, to the PTSA Board and to everyone who gave their time to assist with class projects, decorating, setup and cleanup, and so much more! Thank you all for being part of Carnival 2017!
