Sustainability @ ASD A Look into a Self- Directed Project (SDP) By Defne Er goz

Sustainability is as broad a concept as the Self-Directed Project (SDP) is. That said, I knew that the cross-section of human rights ? specifically women's rights ? with sustainability were topics I wanted to further research. HowwasI sosure? Earlier, I volunteered at Thrift for Good, a charity thrift store that partners with Gulf for Good, a local Non-Governmental Organization (NGO). That opportunity exposed me to experiential and hands-on learning, key components to sustainable development and humanitarian causes in addition to the SDP. This experience also made me aware of the importance of aiding local communities. In light of this, I began brainstorming ways to support a female group in our own ASD community. After some research, I came up with a project: designing a reusable sanitary product that would offer a more sustainable alternative to single-use versions while empowering females; moreover, bringing the community together. Following this came finding my target audience. As the first group that came to mind was the female cleaners on campus, I arranged a meeting with all eight of them. Even though there was some hesitancy to discuss the subject, the idea of a reusable sanitary product seemed to grow on the group by the end, leading me to believe this was the right audience.

From Film Scr eenings to Sewing Wor kshops! So began my informed action. To raise awareness on the topic, I held film screenings followed by debriefs of the 2019 Short-Documentary Oscar winner, Period. End of Sentence., with two student groups (the second with Mr. Brown's sociology class). I discovered another local NGO, Rags to Riches, intrigued by their Angel W ings initiative. After contacting their Co-Founder, Ceri Rocca, I began using their patterns to create a reusable sanitary pad with the help of Ms. Votava and Ms. Hoiseth. Several prototypes later, the final product was ready to be replicated. Fabrics, some upcycled, were cut; machines got set up in the library. Over two

English to the native languages of the cleaners - Hindi and Urdu. Once the finishing touches were complete, the items were ready to be packaged and delivered to the group! From connecting with numerous organizations to working with teachers, staff, and students, while exchanging knowledge, I am grateful for what the SDP has offered and taught me - which is why I wish to continue this learning despite the semester ending. My informed action would be incomplete without interviewing the group again to assess the impact of my project. Additionally, set on furthering my involvement in the plight to create a more sustainable and just society, I will intern at Thrift for Good next semester continuing to develop from thereon.

By constantly making sure the halls, gyms and classrooms are cleaned regularly and constantly ensuring that students are comfortable and safe, students must remember to recognize and thank the staff members who put in the extra time and effort into their daily jobs for the benefit of the students. The teacher ?s dedication to finding and providing extra help and resources for the students and being sympathetic towards their situations cannot be left overlooked. Any form of validation and gratitude towards these members of the school community can help better the campus environment.

r eleasing the hit single ?Take M y Br eath? in August, fans have been highly anticipating the r elease of his latest album , ?Daw n FM ?, w hich dr opped on Januar y 7, 2022.

By Saisha M alhotr a

After the pandem ic took its toll on our w or ld, the Weeknd states that he w anted to cr eate an album that?s ?m or e f an t asy an d m or e of an escape? and thus, Daw n FM is exactly that. He im agines ?being stuck in gr idlock tr affic in a tunnel, and ther e?s a light at the end of the tunnel and w e?r e all just w aiting for our tur n, and w hile w e?r e w aiting ther e?s a r adio station playing: 103.5 Daw n FM , and the r adio DJ is guiding you thr ough the painless tr ansition into the light.?

The album begins w ith the tr ack ?Daw n FM ? w hich includes an intr o featur ing Jim Car r ey, w ho plays the r ole of the ?m ain DJ? of the fictional Daw n FM station. This intr o highlights The Weeknd?s intention of this album having them es of ?pur gator y? and r eaching the ?light at the end of the tunnel.?

"We'll be there to hold your hand and guide you through this painless transition. But what's the rush? Just relax and enjoy another hour of commercial free yourself music on 103.5 Dawn FM .? Jim Carrey

Along w ith Jim Car r ey, the album featur es a num ber of collabor ator s including Tyler , the Cr eator , Lil Wayne, and pr oducer Tom my Br ow n. A Tale by Quincy? is the fir st inter lude on ?Daw n FM ?. M usic pr oducer , Quincy Jones, r eflects on his difficult upbr inging and par ental str uggles, ?... it?s like r aising kids m an, if you w er en?t r aised, you don?t know how to r aise, you know ?? He speaks on how this has affected his r elationship w ith his kids and w om en. This is close to r ecur r ing topics thr oughout the Weeknd?s m usic w her e he often sings about str uggling in r elationships due to his upbr inging. The ending of the song ?Out of Tim e? featur es a spoken outr o by Jim Car r ey w hich begins w ith ?Don ?t you dar e t ou ch t h at di al . Becau se l i k e t h e son g says, you ar e ou t of t i m e.? And finally finishes w ith, ?You m ay even for get your ow n nam e. But befor e you dw ell in that house for ever , her e's thir ty m inutes of easy listening to som e slow tr acks on 103.5 Daw n FM .? This spoken outr o once again br ings you back to the idea of pur gator y and enter ing the after life.

?Ever y Angel is Ter r ifying? is a par t of the second half of the album and featur es another spoken inter lude. The title r efer s to the fact that angels ar e typically por tr ayed as beautiful, but in r eality ar e quite odd and scar y w hen depicted in the Bible. This follow s the m otif of this album feeling as though you?r e enter ing the after life. The spoken w or d section includes a quote fr om Rainer M ar ia Rilke?s Duino Elegies poem , a ser ies of poem s com posed in Ger m an betw een 1912 and 1923 that ?juxtapose r eligious beauty w ith existential cosm ic hor r or ? (Genius.com ). The inter lude section speaks of science fiction, once again r elating to the subject of escapism thr oughout this album . The w ay The Weeknd m akes the album a genuine listening exper ience for his fans is quite notew or thy. The fir st half of the album featur es songs like ?How Do I M ake You Love M e?? and ?Sacr ifice? w hich M edium .com descr ibes as sounding ?ver y M icheal Jackson-esque.? These songs feel like a disco par ty and featur e upbeat synths. W her eas the second half of the album feels slow er and str ays m or e tow ar ds The Weeknd?s typical vocal-heavy ballads. This ?tr ansition? is r epr esentative of him finally com ing to ter m s w ith his actions and exper iences that haunt his past. This album displays a new sense of m atur ity w her e it seem s he?s tr ying to w alk in another per son?s shoes, w hich hasn't been seen befor e in any pr evious album s. His vulner ability is show n in songs like ?Is Ther e Som eone Else?? w her e he asks a past lover if they?r e w ith som eone else and how he know s that w ill hur t ever yone involved.

Another notable featur e of this album is the tr ansitions betw een the songs. Betw een ?How Do I M ake You Love M e?? to ?Take M y Br eath? the tr ansition is seam less, m aking the listener feel as the stor y fr om the pr evious song bleeds str aight into the next. The tr ansition fr om ?Best Fr iends? to ?Is Ther e Som eone Else?? is another fan favor ite.

Finally, w e r each ?the light at the end of the tunnel? on ?Less Than Zer o? at the ver y end of the album . In this song, The Weeknd finally accepts that he m ay not be able to change his w ays and his guilt continues to linger on after br eaking his past lover ?s hear t. He finally com es to ter m s w ith the fact that it?s over and accepts that they don?t love him anym or e. The tr ack follow ing this one concludes the album . ?Phantom Regr et by Jim ? is a spoken poem by Jim Car r ey and is essentially an intr ospection of one?s soul. The Soul, voiced by Car r ey, speaks about com ing to ter m s w ith one?s r egr ets and taking r esponsibility for your decisions. By being able to let go, you?r e able to find a heaven w ithin your self. Finally, the album concludes w ith the w or ds, ?You got t a be Heaven t o see Heaven . M ay peace be w i t h you .?

?Daw n FM ? stands as yet another r em ar kable album by The Weeknd w her e he effor tlessly dives into his 80?s r etr o w ave sounds that have been long-aw aited. Under standably, som e fans m iss his older sound, w hich w as m or e m oody and m elancholic and less synth-heavy. As m or e cr eative liber ties w er e taken w ith this album , it?s har d to say it w as disappointing but r ather show ed a natur al gr ow th and m atur ity in The Weeknd?s sound and lyr ics. W ill this be som ething that continues in his m usic m oving for w ar d or w ill w e r etur n to the dar k lyr icism that w as once pr evalent? Only tim e can tell.

What to Wear in 2022 By Nadia Sidani

New year, new you? with the influence of the worlds newest trends, of cour se. As the new year begins, we are already seeing many trends that have begun to reveal themselves, and will surely only grow throughout the year. Trends come and go, and in 2022 there are lot of old trends making their way into our closets once again.

By: Nadia Sidani

EVEN HIGHER HEELS:

1

Following in suit as the previous trend, this next one is also a re- fashion of a 2002 trend. Platfor ms used to be one of the biggest fads; ever y celebr ity was spotting wear ing platfor m flip flops. As the year s went by, however, the shoes went as well. Up until recently, thanks to Ar iana Gr ande, we have seen platfor ms make an extr aordinar y comeback into our closets, with a few upgr ades. Instead of the platfor m sandals we all know and love, we now have gor geous heels that give a lot with their chunky platfor m. Designer s, such as Ver sace and Pr ada, have already been introducing the heels to their collections and there is no doubt that we will see celebs spor ting their platfor ms casually once again

THE RE- RISE OF LOW- RISE: To the dismay of many, it?s time to throw out high- waisted mom jeans, and re- introduce your circa 2005 low- r ise jeans. Low- r ise has slowly

2

been creeping its way into our feeds from last year, giving a taste of what?s to come. Yet, since the new year, sever al celebr ities have been spotted wear ing low- r ise clothes. Bella Hadid recently wore a dress that had the classic 2005 low waisted r ing belt, and needless to say we can expect many to follow suit.

CUTOUTS:

3

Cutout clothes follow us into the new year, but even more cutout. Showing skin has been one of the most embr aced aspects of 21st centur y fashion, and in 2022 there is no exception. Designer s have dr ifted from the typical cutout and have introduced cutouts in more intr iguing places. I.AM.GIA, a pioneer in eccentr ic fashion trends, was one of the fir st br ands to present these trends with their revealing Amina Pants. These cleverly- placed cutouts, and their different patter ns, create a beautiful silhouette and surely make an outfit stand- out.

4 A POP OF COLOR: Pur ple, blue, or ange, yellow, and green, are just some of the color s that can add a beautiful accent to any outfit. In 2021, neutr al tones were in style, and in contr ast to last year, this year is all about color. The more color the better. Even dual- colored items can create the most beautiful emphasis on an outfit. Whether it be a green shoulder bag or a br ight pink heel, you better star t filling your closets with all color s of the r ainbow.

THE BATMAN

Director: Matt Reeves Released: March 3, 2022

As 2022 begins, we are expecting a slew of new film releases. Despite the fact that the coronavirus epidemic continues to have a dampening effect on the movie industry, Hollywood has continued its production of big-budget films.

1

Th e Batman (2022), the next chapter inside the DC Cinematic Universe, is a thrilling new portrayal of possibly the most well-known comic book hero. After a series of COVID-19-related difficulties, the film is slated to conclude production in March and be released in the spring of 2022. News of delays appears to be fueling fans' excitement for what promises to be an exciting new chapter in the Batman franchise, as director Matt Reeves seeks to take a familiar franchise into uncertain territory. Audiences are even more excited to see this film since it was announced that Ben Affleck had been replaced with British actor Robert Pattinson. I'm sure a lot of people are looking forward to seeing what Pattinson will bring to this role and how he will depict the Dark Knight. Reeves has stated that

this film will have a different interpretation of the characters and plot than previous Batman films. This one will feature more violence and cruelty, as well as a compelling psychological twist. This is a groundbreaking turn in the Batman trilogy, and I know a lot of people are looking forward to seeing the final result in February.

Scream is a horror, mystery, and comedy fi franchise. There have been four films befo this one, and each has enjoyed box-office success. The plot features a new Ghostface who arises twenty-five years after the initia series of murders in Woodsboro, and beloved character, Sidney Prescott, must return to investigate. As the fifth addition t the long-running horror franchise, film crit are recognizing it as possibly the greatest Scream film since the 1996 original. Melissa Barrera, Mason Gooding, Jenna Ortega, an Jack Quaid join franchise favorites Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and David Arquette in the new "Scream". While the franchise is one of the most popular in horror film history, the most recent one pr to the 2022 film was released in 2011, making the new film highly anticipated. Some audience members might initially th that this sequel is too similar to the ones before, but it is intended to feel consistent with the first four movies while being distin enough to stand on its own. This film migh resonate the most with viewers raised on t 1996 original, but it will definitely be enjoy by newcomers as well.

This film has been marketed around the world for at least a year, with the first trailer released in 2020. This has piqued people's interest and fueled anticipation for this mystery flick. As a follow-up to Kenneth Branagh's unexpected 2017 smash Murder on the Orient Express, this film has a cast of highly recognizable actors reenacting one of Agatha Christie's most popular mystery novels. When a picture-perfect couple's blissful honeymoon is brutally cut short, a vacation on a luxury riverboat turns into a thrilling hunt for the killer. This story of an unforgettable romance and incapacitating envy follows a sophisticated group of elegantly dressed travelers, as they respond to being investigated and has enough twists and turns to keep audiences guessing until the startling conclusion. This film has a lot of people enthusiastic for its release in early 2022.

Although there hasn't been much information disclosed about this next addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it hasn't stopped fans from eagerly anticipating its debut. The MCU has one of the largest fan bases, thus expectations are high. Romance has never been the strongest feature of previous Thor movies, which is why this film is such a huge deal because of its ambitions to go follow a romantic storyline. While the plot for Love and Thunder is a closely guarded secret, we do know that the film will act as a type of Lady Thor (rumored to be played by Natalie Portman) origin narrative and will incorporate parts from The Mighty Thor comic book. While Thor: Love and Thunder leans toward romance, it will not disappoint its die-hard superhero/action enthusiasts. This film is scheduled to be released on May 6, 2022.

Following the start of the new year, fashion houses are on the prowl for 2022?s up-and-coming designers.

There's a constant influx of haute couture to keep tabs on this year. The selections vary from Turley?s innovative fashion houses to de l?année?s fully prepared manufacturers. The selections of the year all had one constant theme: the designers chose all prioritize identity and inclusivity in their companies.

Below take a look at the multiple up-and-coming designers that fashion houses and insiders are excited about for the year 2022.

Lùchen Founded by Jacky L uo and Parsons grad L u Chen, the new and flourishing brand known as L ùchen will be releasing its first-ever collection during the time period of the spring 2022 season, showcasing a variety of deconstructed minimalism and euphoric vagary. Examples include a structured menswear-inspired coat worn under a tulle cape or the gravity-defying tops that resemble a coral reef when worn underwater. Chloe King, the company's head of brand relations, discovered the brand on I nstagram. I t was this combination of softness and razor-sharp tailoring that made her stop scrolling. "T he artwork of their debut collection blew me away - clever, creative, and bizarre," she adds. "A Schiaparelli reference is always welcome."

Miss Sohee

A South Korean designer named Sohee Park, but more formally known to the public as Miss Sohee, has indeed been making headlines in the business for a while now. Her distinct style, which she compares to couture, is not only exquisitely beautiful but also environmentally conscientious. She uses deadstock and repurposed textiles to create opulent designs that are typically embellished with sequins, pearls, and other decorations.

Feben

Her works are surprisingly powerful, intermingled with themes of her individual identity as a woman of color, political agenda, and plays on the physique. She's worked with Beyoncé, Michaela Coel, Erykah Badu, and Janelle Monáe, so she's no stranger to the spotlight. Her early summer 2022 campaign was designed by power couple I b Kamara and Rafael Pavarotti, and it was stunning.

Avavav

T he creative director of Avavav known as Beate Karlson has an increasingly huge fascination with anything that is considered out of the ordinary, constantly collaborating with avant-garde designers, examples including Simon Saarinen, I da Jonsson, and Pyer Moss on their inaugural couture collection. Karlsson's spring 2022 collection included Y2K allusions, mesh shirts, low-rise jeans, and bubble forms, which are all popular among T ikTok's fashion followers. Agustina Panzoni, Depop's womenswear category manager, sees Avavav's enchantment in the brand's footwear.

Wieder hoef t A T hom Browne graduate named Jackson Wiederhoeft just came out with his most recent introductory collection for 2022?s fall season, featuring many types of unconventional clothing such as corsets, corset dresses, metallic quilted jackets, floral-printed sweatshirts, and his most anticipated clothing designs, the harlequins. However, the brand has already made a name for itself through beautiful visionary grandeur and wedding gowns line, with L ady Gaga and Jordan Alexander among its famous fans. (L ast year, Jordan Alexander wore a bright bustier to the premiere of Gossip Girl, which made me reassess how adaptable lingerie can be.) Since then, the company has built a reputation for voluminous forms, corseted numbers, and plenty of tulles that isn't only for weddings.

Elena Velez has been a part of the fashion industry for a while now, but in recent years she has been increasingly catching the attention of many fashion insiders. She uses inspiration from her Midwestern upbringing to showcase her homeland?s industrial past, mainly focusing on craftsmanship and sustainability when creating her pieces. During the time frame of 2017-2019, the designer was becoming so noticed by the public that she was nominated and showcased as one of Teen Vogue's Generation Next designers, and she has even been given the opportunity to showcase her work in Milan Fashion Week. Her attention to detail when keeping her theme of workmanship and sustainability alive sets her apart from other upcoming designers and for sure guarantees her an amazing future in 2022, a year full of opportunities.

The " L ove Stor y" That Norwegian Wood Tells By: Magdalena Whisenhunt

A s a devoted fan of Murakami?s, I may be biased in saying that his writing invokes a sense of comfort. It is odd, though, the way that we differ in defining a sense of comfort - a warm blanket hugging us on a rainy day, the softness of the ocean?s water on your skin, or the warm beating the sun casts onto your face, softly kissing and caressing your cheeks. Every person?s definition of what comfort is varies. And yet, at the same time, there are different kinds of comfort. A suckle, toothsome spoon of honey dances on your tongue just as well as the tangy flavors of a freshly picked mango does, yet the flavors are completely different. And so what does that say about comfort? There is, of course, the noun comfort, which means to be eased or alleviated from a feeling of grief or distress, and then there is also the verb, wherein comfort means to actively be eased from the grief you are feeling. Somehow, Norwegian Wood does both of those things, simultaneously. I propose this question onto you: is it possible that there may be some form of solace to be found within that grief or within that distress? Is it possible that the darkness we may go through, as bleak as it may be, is our comfort?

I

have found that some of the most oddly placed embodiments of comfort are within darkness, that is if you can find it within yourself to see that the blatant transparency of the ugliness of darkness is well within our beingness. Accepting that we are built to experience hardships is the first step to finding that bit of warmth even in the coldest of winters - a light at the end of the tunnel, if you will. This revelation was sparked through the dire passages within this novel as Murakami shamelessly writes about the darkest of topics: mental illness, death, lonesomeness, and tragedy. And yet, through these passages that speak of such things, all that I can really feel are the peach and pink undertone hues of utter tenderness, hidden between the lines, like the inside of walls in a house. At first glance, you may not give them thought, those walls, but they are there constantly. What would that house be, if not for those walls?

Pinterest

I magine standing in the middle between two roads - to the right is the past, which is lined with death. To the left is the future, which is paved with life. As humans we get caught up and so focused on choosing a path that we forget just how interconnected the two of those paths are, and that we cannot go down one road without finding ourselves on the other. This novel speaks of being in love with the past and desperately wanting to save the past from its inevitable death. And how selfish is that, where we truly believe we can make a difference in the way of life. But selfishness is a core part of our beingness, too. The selfish decisions that these characters may make in this book, you will learn that once the words have truly sunk in, like the tea leaves at the bottom of a mug, that like most all things in life, perspective is everything. Norwegian Wood undoubtedly reads like a story that feels like it should never end. The characters on the pages are some of the most human I?ve ever read, and that might be distasteful to some. The rawness of these characters shines so brightly that it almost hurts. The pang of mundane life and being human is so very real that many may be turned off by the book. But, to me, that is the beauty of Murakami?s writing; we are ugly in nature. But you can find beauty in that grittiness, the same way you can find comfort in grief. Set in the late 60?s to early 70?s in Japan, Murakami walks us down the road of Turo Watanabe, who looks back on that road of the past, caught up in his youthfulness when he would participate in student protests with the people he connected with most at that time. There is no clear cut love story, but there are many allusions to love. Being in love with the past, being in love with possibilities, and being in love with pain. As I?ve stated above, the main themes of Norwegian Wood are rather dark, but Murakami forces you to become one with the blackness that goes hand in hand with the whiteness. They are innate, the two. We may not realize it at times, but even the most opposing views are on the same compass.

?Death is not the opposite of life but an innate part of it. By living our lives, we nurture death.?

Noruwei no Mori (Orignal Japanese Title)

T he love tale that is written before us is not a traditional one, no matter what angle you may try to look at it. There are sequences of events that may allude to something so simple as being in love, but Murakami encourages us to embrace the complexities of life, and by doing so comforts us in what may previously have scared us. Norwegian Wood is not the comfort of freshly washed sheets, or even the basic comfort of stability. It is the confrontation of life, allowing ourselves to fall into the arms of ambiguity, while at the same time welcoming the inevitable of our existence and all it may have to offer. This novel has personally changed my perception of death, or day and night. I cannot necessarily guarantee one will like the story, but I can ensure the overwhelming fondness of the way Murakami writes. The two are different - a story may be weak, but what makes the book strong is the writing. Enjoy the way the story takes you soaring through the sky, feel the uncomfortable aspects of life, and when it is all over, take it in. Shelter and foster the ideas that are proposed and find comfort in the disturbing. Pinterest

Fashion 101: Car r ie Br adshaw Before there was Emily Cooper, before there was Blair Waldorf and Serena Van Der Woodson, there was Carrie Bradshaw. SATC first premiered June 6th 1998, and just like that Carrie changed fashion as we know it. Eclectic is how one can describe her fashion and style. From fur to tulle, her looks have raised some eyebrows. Carrie's style may be described as diverse. Her commitment to experimenting is admirable; her sense of fun is contagious, and her ability to pull off a look is unrivaled. Carrie has made us want to wear cowboy hats, tutus, and bustle skirts at one point or another. Fashion columnist by day, city girl at night Carrie lived the dream so many girls wanted

If there is one thing that Carrie has taught us, it's the power of a good shoe. Friends may come and go but shoes will always be there for you. But not any type of shoe? .. The infamous Manolo Blahnik. From Hangisi to Mary Jane these shoes have been seen on the feet of celebs all over the world but became known due to Carrie's obsession with them.

Looking good and feeling good is an important motto to follow. When you take the time to dress up and make yourself presentable, it helps you to feel more confident and better about yourself. Carrie never had one moment on the show where she wasn't dressed up, she even wore pearls to bed. On New Year 's Eve when she decided to stay home she dressed up in PJ?s and a complete set of Cartier Jewels to add an elevated chic look. You don't need to have the most expensive clothes to look fab.

The roots of the little black dress are attributed to Coco Chanel and Jean Patou's designs from the 1920s, which were meant to be long-lasting, adaptable, inexpensive, and accessible to the average woman. Because of its widespread popularity, it's commonly referred to as LBD. Prosperity, power, wickedness, elegance, luxury, and rebellion have all been associated with the dress.

It took 10 years for Mr. Big and Carrie to get married, but before they reached their happily ever after, there were many ups and downs, which called for amazing revenge outfits. The white dress is worn when Carrie goes to Big?s engagement party after getting her heartbroken by him. After the great four parallels between Big and Carrie's love tale and the legendary 1973 film The Way We Were, a mournful Bradshaw approaches him and quotes lines from the film. Iconic. She walks away. The scene is the ideal and therapeutic send-off for a former sweetheart. The dress is also the most suited outfit for the occasion. The dress is so perfect for this scene as it's so simple yet so accurate to describe the feelings that Carrie must have seeing her one true love with another woman.

Fashion is not about staying within the lines, it's about exploring patterns, shapes, and colors and expressing yourself through clothes. Carrie is no stranger to outfits that are outside of the box. The newspaper dress was designed by John Galliano for the Christian Dior 2000 Spring Collection. Carrie became the unofficial face of Galliano's infamous newspaper dress, which was initially seen on Angie Schmidt in his autumn/winter 2000 catwalk show.

T he D uk e and the D evi ant The story of Prince Andrew and Jeffery Epstien By: Matilda Westbrook and Riley Toa

Prince Andrew from the UK has been stripped of his royal titles - but why? This is all due to his connections over the years with the convicted paedophile and financier, Jeffery Epstein. Epstein was first arrested and charged and then later convicted in 2008 for procuring and prostitution of a girl below the age of 18 and was sentenced to 18 months in jail. However, during this period, he managed to strike a deal with the sheriff to arrange that he could leave the prison for 12 hours a day, 6 days a week. The only requirement was to spend the night in his cell. This leniency led him to further be able to conduct his sordid life. Epstein served nearly 13 months of the 18 months sentence before being released to a 1-year term of house arrest. He didn?t even take that seriously whilst being on probation, he was allowed to use his private jet to go to his personal island in the US Virgin Islands and visit his New York house. He was also able to leave the house to go shopping and to exercise - doesn?t sound like house arrest to me! He was also a registered sex offender at this point, and this title remains on record for life. Moving forward to 2019. Epstein was again arrested and charged, this time on sex trafficking charges and conspiracy to traffic minors for sex. The grand jury alleged that ?dozens?of girls had been trafficked for Epstein's benefit. A month later, whilst waiting for the trial date, Jeffrey Epstein hanged himself in his cell, although even that is thought to not be straightforward. People think that maybe he was attacked or maybe the guards didn?t do their 30 minutes rounds of the cell which gave him the opportunity to end his life. So who else was involved? Epstein could not do this alone. After all, he was a busy businessman. So it is alleged that a British socialite named Ghislaine Maxwell (daughter of a disgraced newspaper tycoon, Robert Maxwell) helped him. Epstein was drawn to Ghislaine like her father; she had a lot of connections to British royalty, aristocracy, businessmen - not only in Britain but also the US. They partied with Bill Clinton, Bill Gates, and Donald Trump just to name a few.

A number of survivors of Jeffery Epstein (we call them survivors as the term ?victims?casts these women as small and vulnerable, instead of the brave women that they are) have raised legal cases against Maxwell since Epstein?s death as they want justice for what they went through at a young age. Some of these girls were as young as 14 when they were trafficked for Epstein and his friends. Maxwell went into hiding as soon as Epstein died and was found by the police in July 2020, 11 months later in New Hampshire, US. She was charged with enticement of minors, sex trafficking of children, and perjury. These charges were for claims that the survivors made related to incidents that happened between 1994 to 1997. On 29th December 2021, Maxwell was convicted in the US federal court on five sex trafficking counts, which could carry a sentence of up to 65 years in jail, and she will be seeing the same four walls for the rest of her life. However, as she was party to knowing who else Epstein supplied girls for i.e. celebrities and influential people, it is unknown whether Maxwell will use that information to try and reduce her final sentencing, which is due at the end of June this year. Her family say that they will appeal the convictions. That brings us to Prince Andrew. Prince Andrew said in a BBC Newsnight interview in November 2019 (we watched it twice!) that he met Epstein through Maxwell in 1999. However, palace sources say that they actually met in the early 1990s. In the interview, there were a lot of strange inaccuracies and claims, like that Prince Andrew ?cannot sweat?, and on the night he was accused of abusing a lady called Virginia Giuffre, who is now suing him, he claims he was at a Pizza Express restaurant in Woking. Staff who were working there at the time were asked, and none of them remember the Prince being there, and they would remember! Even police records, as he would have had close protection, show no evidence that he was there. Virginia Giuffre is currently suing Prince Andrew for abuse. In 2019 she lodged a claim that in earlier years, she was brought to the UK specifically to be trafficked to Prince Andrew. Prince Andrew denies ever meeting Giuffre; however, there is now a famous photo, taken in Maxwell?s London home, of Prince Andrew with his arm around Giuffre. This is the same evening that he claims to have been at a Pizza Express. Prince Andrew?s lawyers have tried for two years to sweep this under the rug, but the New York judges said two weeks ago that he is not above the law and that the case will be going to court. It is scheduled for later this year. Last week, the queen had no choice but to strip her favourite son of all his military medals and patronages and also to remove his HRH (His Royal Highness) title. He will be tried as a public citizen at the end of the year, and time will tell whether he will be found guilty or not.

"I don't know why I 've collected that title because I don't- I never have really partied"

"Oh in 2010 that there wasn't , certainly wasn't a party to celebrate his release in December. Because it was a small dinner party there was only eight or ten of us at the dinner. "

"I am not one to, as it were, hug. And public displays of affection are not something that I do". Prince Andrew referring to the photo of himself with Ms Roberts.

"I didn't sweat at the time because I had suffered what I would describe as an overdose of adrenaline in the Falklands War when I was shot at and I simply... it was almost impossible for me to sweat." Prince Andrew in response to being accused of a very sweaty night with Ms Roberts.

How Publishing is Still Racist By: Anusha Shah The struggles people of color face compared to their white counterparts. source: Wallpaper Flare

The Lack of Diversity in Publishing Diversity is a word that is used commonly when talking about minorities. However, people always fail to understand that there is, in fact, an absurd lack of representation for minorities in many different aspects of society. Publishing is only one industry out of many that have this issue. In publishing, there are four major companies. The leaders of all of these four companies are white. The majority of the people in power are white and according to Alvina Ling, ?In terms of BIPOC on staff at publishers, I?m not sure if much has changed either positively or negatively. When I started at my company over twenty years ago, the junior staff was very diverse, but senior-level and upper management, not so much. When I look at the Executive Management Board and Senior Management Board, the latter of which I?m a member of, it feels overwhelmingly white to me, especially in key departments.? While more people of color are being hired, the number of people of color in positions that can cause change are severely limited.

Staff at publishing companies are not the only place where they lack diversity. Even in terms of authors that are published, diversity is limited. This is not well known though because ?[this] lack of diversity among authors might be obscured by a small number of high-profile nonfiction books written by athletes, celebrities and politicians of color, according to Ms. Brown. ?It gives the appearance that there are a lot of Black books published,? while publishers?less famous ?mid-list? authors are overwhelmingly white?, she said. On top of that, literary prizes also obscure the lack of authors of color. More than half of the National Book Award recipients of the last ten years have been written by people of color. This, once again, disguises the fact that there are very few authors of color because certain authors of color are highlighted while the majority of authors in publishing remain white.

source: pixabay

Why Diversity Matters

Well, there are a number of reasons, including the fact that according to Marie Dutton Brown, ?many white editors are not exposed to Black life beyond the headlines.? They have a single view of what it means to be Black and the culture surrounding that identity. Having Black people at the table allows the diversity of Black culture to be told through stories. This is especially highlighted by the fact that, ?too often, the books acquired from Black authors are ?trauma stories.?There are other stories that Black authors want to tell and we want publishing to amplify narratives that don?t rest on the trauma of living in a Black body.? (VOX). On top of that, with their existing majority-white staff in positions of power, many incredible stories are ignored because the ?diversity quota?of a company is filled. ?I?ve heard things like, ?We already have our Black girl book for the year,?? said Ms. McKinney. ?This idea that black stories are only published to meet a diversity quota is proof that there needs to be more people of color at the table to celebrate Black voices rather than accept them to meet societal standards of ?enough diversity?.? Kerri K. Greenidge is a prime example of this.?My book on William Trotter, every place I submitted the manuscript to, the response was that no one was going to read a book that didn?t have white people as a protagonist, and who was going to read a book about a Black man that nobody had ever heard about?? Diversity is crucial for more marginalized, incredible stories to be told.

The number of books published by people of

source: brooklynbookfestival.com

color directly relates to the number of people of color who work at a company. The first Black female editor at Random House, Toni Morrison was a prime example of that. When she worked at the company from 1984 to 1990, the company had 3.3% of their books (an already low number) written by Black authors, but once she left this number dropped dramatically. This is another reason that having a diverse company would allow

Toni Morrison

more marginalized people to have a voice and a space in the world of publishing.

What Do People of Color Face in the Publishing Industry While increasing diversity is crucial for the publishing industry, people of color still face numerous struggles in this industry. While already being tremendously low paying (especially in New York), ?for the few people of color who are able to fight their way in through the doors of the publishing world, there?s also the issue of a very real pay gap across both race and gender lines.? Deshommes describes her salary from her time in a major publishing house as ?grossly underpaid compared to my white colleagues? I have heard of cases where employees of color have had to get offers from other companies or have had to work twice as hard as their white counterparts to get significant raises and promotions? (The Grio). On top of this, white editors are celebrated for things that Black editors are expected to do. According to Tracy

source: New York Times

Sherrod, ?A white editor can be rewarded for acquiring an expensive Black author. If you did the research, you?d probably find that most people who have acquired a book by a Black author for a large advance, they?re promoted, get a new job. I?ve seen people make their careers off of it. Why do I think that is? Because if a white person puts their stamp on a Black book, it suddenly becomes more valuable. Black editors most definitely must be fiscally responsible to keep your job and to have the pleasurable opportunity of publishing our voices.?

Tracy Sherrod

Not only do the people working in publishing face this pay gap but authors do as well. After a hashtag ?#publishingpaidme?went viral on Twitter, numerous authors voiced the advances they received, and there was an astounding difference in the money that Black versus white authors were paid. For her debut novel, white author Mandy Len Catron got payed $400,000 for her advance, while Roxanne Gay - an established Black author who earned numerous awards - got paid at most an advance of $150,000. This giant pay gap was displayed through numerous authors. The pay gap is only one struggle that people of color face in publishing. According to The Grio ??No matter how many times I submitted an application for a job at a publisher, I never made it past the first interview,?says a woman of color who worked in book publishing whom we?ll call Shanda. ?It took me a long time to accept the reality that there were many obstacles for a person of color to enter into the world of book publishing.?? This in turn adds to how black people do not get the same opportunity to even work in publishing that white people do. Even getting employed is harder for people of color solely because they are people of color. Authors of color face a similar problem. According to a former Simon & Schuster editor, Micheal Strother, when he pitched Angie Thomas? novel The Hate U Give, he expected there to be a lot of support for such an important story. ?Some of [his] white colleagues were hesitant, though. One asked, ?Do we need Angie Thomas if we have Jason Reynolds??(Mr. Reynolds is another Black author of young-adult novels.)? Having a diversity quota at a company limits voices of authors of color and makes it harder for them to get published. The sludge pile is not the only obstacle that authors of color face.

Conclusion Overall, diversity in the publishing industry is still quite limited and that is present not only in the number of authors of color but also in terms of the number of editors and

executives of color. Having this lack of diversity contributes to struggles that many people of color face when attempting to join the industry. While companies have started to hire more people of color, to move to a more inclusive industry, there needs to be people of color present at executive levels in companies. Only hiring new employees in intro-level jobs does not promote a community that is inclusive. Diversity is tremendously important and while publishing has many issues, these can be fixed. Let?s take the steps to make publishing more inclusive and diverse.

COVID-19: The Consequences of the Pandemic on Mental Health

By Saisha Malhotra As we enter the third year of the pandemic, the future in terms of the COVID-19 virus seems more and more uncertain each day. W ith schools and universities unexpectedly shifting between online and in-person learning and with many jobs being at risk, the pandemic continues to take its toll on mental health and wellbeing. Not only that, but the pandemic has disproportionately adverse effects on essential workers and communities of color.

Young Adults Before the virus, young adults were already at relatively high risks for mental health and substance abuse problems. Unfortunately, this only worsened during the pandemic. Loneliness and isolation became a great concern during the pandemic due to its association with reduced lifespan and increased risk of mental/ physical health concerns. The generation of young adults (ages 18-24) is in critical periods of their lives where social interaction is fundamental for positive wellbeing and positive experiences. Due to increased time spent in isolation, a greater than an average number of young adults report symptoms of anxiety and/ or depressive disorder. Furthermore, young adults were found to report substance use more often than adults (25%vs. 13%, respectively). Serious thoughts of suicide in young adults also increased during the pandemic by 26%(compared to 11%of adults). It?s also important to acknowledge the less severe but still troubling impacts of COVID-19 such as sleep disruptions and unhealthy changes in diet. The pandemic made it more difficult to receive treatment for those struggling, which only worsens poor mental health conditions.

The W orking Class and Adults Throughout the pandemic, people have lost jobs or are experiencing income insecurity, which has adverse effects on mental health. Essential workers (health-care staff, package delivery personnel, and grocery store employees) display higher rates of poor mental health as a result of being at higher risks of contracting COVID-19. This Source: NBC News

increased risk for essential workers results in added anxiety and stress in

day-to-day life. In April 2020, 64%of households with a health care worker reported issues such as trouble sleeping/ eating, increased alcohol and substance consumption, and worsening chronic conditions as a result of the virus. Job loss during the pandemic has increased anxiety, depression, and substance use disorders in adults. The high unemployment rate has been found to have an association with increases in suicide. A KFF Health Tracking Poll in July 2020 found that households experiencing income/ job loss reported that ?the pandemic-related worry or stress caused them to experience at least one adverse effect on their mental health and well-being, such as difficulty sleeping or eating, increase in alcohol consumption or substance use, and worsening chronic conditions.

Parents and Children

In addition, child abuse is likely to increase during the pandemic. KFF states that ?while child abuse-related emergency department (ED) visits declined during the outbreak, the severity of injuries among child-abuse ED visits has increased and resulted in more hospitalizations.? The current increase in child abuse is expected to result in mental illness and substance abuse in later life. Furthermore, educators play a Source: HealthLine

Parents with children entering grade-level education are concerned with how the coronavirus will impact their children?s education and wellbeing. The pandemic threatens child growth and development and may increase stress disorders, post-traumatic stress, and anxiety and depression disorders among children. Moreover, the pandemic poses a threat to developmental delays which can pose health concerns in adulthood. Schools closing led to reduced social and physical activities, sleep difficulties, excessive screen use, and unhealthy diets within the current generation of young children. These concerns in children consequently result in increased stress and anxiety among parents who must try and adapt to constant disruptions in routine while trying to nurture their children?s declining mental health. During the pandemic, adults with children reported a slightly higher level of anxiety and/ or depressive disorders compared with adults with children older than the age of 18. More specifically, among the households with children younger than 18, women were more likely to report symptoms of anxiety and/ or depressive disorders than men (49%vs. 40%, respectively, as of December 2020).

significant role in identifying and reporting cases of child abuse, but with school closure and quarantine, it?s likely that cases are going unreported, and children with abusive households are facing increased exposure to their abusers.

Communities of Color COVID-19 has disproportionately affected the physical and mental health of communities of color. It was reported that Black adults (48%) and Hispanic or Latino adults (46%) are more likely to report symptoms of anxiety and/ or depressive disorder than Non-Hispanic W hite adults (41%). Historically, Black and Hispanic or Latino communities have faced challenges accessing mental health care as well as physical health care and this trend has only seemed to continue throughout the pandemic. Black parents, more often than W hite parents, reported negative implications of the pandemic on their children?s education, their ability to take care of their children, and familial relationships. Additionally, the suicide rate has been historically higher than average among Native American communities, which may increase due to the pandemic.

Coping with Self Care Each person may respond to the pandemic differently, with some facing more troubles than others. W hile isolation can feel lonely and exhausting, it?s important to practice mental healthcare to try and alleviate some of the stress due to disruption to normal life. Try and create a routine that prioritizes taking care of yourself. This could include things like reading, watching movies, physical exercise, or meditation. W ith increased screen time, it?s important to practice activities that emphasize being present in the moment. Activities such as going for a walk, cooking, and exercising are great ways to give your eyes and mind a break from the screen and improve your physical health. To try and reduce health-related stress during the pandemic, make sure you have enough prescription medications as needed and continue to go to routine check-ups and scans. Maintaining a healthy diet and sleep routine can help maintain mental and physical wellbeing. Try to stay as connected as possible. W ith all the time spent home alone, it can be easy to disconnect from friends and family. Keeping in touch with loved ones can help introduce some normalcy and communication back into everyday life. If needed, contact emotional suppor t ser vices w hen exper iencing distr ess, tr auma, or mental heal th pr obl ems dur ing the pandemic. During these times, acknowledgment of physical and mental health is of the utmost importance

FByeminis m Sarah Rassool It is a common assumption that history has been written based on the actions and accomplishments of men. However, this is embarrassingly wrong. Under such popular thoughts, countless individuals are so evidently blind to the presence of all those great women, from the past and present, who spent their lives in defiance of the conventions that for centuries and across all cultures attempted to confine them to hearth, home, and domestic servitude. For this reason, we must put more emphasis on the women that not only wrote history but built the foundations of feminism to this day.

As a sponsor of the Enlightenment and the first female ruler of the Russian Empire, Catherine also aspired to reform the social and political structures in society. While she did ascend to the throne through her husband and had believed in an absolute monarchy, she did instill social reforms that aimed for equality between individuals, including women. Djokovic an d Th e Au st r alian Open By:Alex By Alex Rasm i

As most of you know, Australia hosts a grand slam once a year. At the Australian Open, top players in men's and women?s tennis come together to see who is the best. With such a huge event occurring in the time of Covid,

Donaldson, James. ?The Australian Open.?Espn.com, Espn.com, 4 June 2021, https://besthqwallpapers.com/download/original/32774. Accessed 31 Jan. 2022.

there have been a lot of precautions put in place in terms of lockdown and getting into Australia. One of the main requirements noted on the website is vaccination and proof of vaccination. This has presented an issue for some players as they have had no vaccine shots due to varying reasons.

The main player affected is Novak Djokovic, who has been in some controversy lately as he has decided to remain unvaccinated as h e is uncertain about the long-term effects it could have on him. Originally Djokovic obtained a visa on special grounds due to the tournament as he is the three-time defending champ and has the most titles of all time with nine. After outrage from some and a review of his visa, Australia revoked his visa a short period after he landed in Melbourne. This led to legal action being taken and Djokovic getting his visa reinstated for roughly a week before it was revoked yet again by the government for the final time leading to Djokovic going home. These events have caused a split in society with differing opinions on how it has been handled.

There have been two main perspectives. The first one is focused on Djokovic being a bad role model due to being anti-vax and applauding Australia for maintaining its citizens?safety even in these circumstances. The other is focusing on Australia not allowing him to play even if he tested negative and quarantined and knocking them for controlling people?s choices. There has been a massive divide surrounding this issue; however, it is now over as Djokovic has been replaced by Salvatore Caruso and will officially be dethroned as reigning champ for the past three years.

The future's looking grim for Djokovic as the prime minister of Spain has already called him out and told him he will have to comply with the rules if he wants to attend the upcoming Madrid Open. If Djokovic doesn?t start complying with rules and regulations, he will most likely keep missing tournaments. This is a result of most countries not allowing non-vaccinated people to obtain visas and due to his absolute refusal to get vaccinated. A lot of countries are going to be harsher on him to make a point.

It?s simple; gather a group of your fr iends who are all willing to play along and wr ite down their names on a separ ate piece of paper for each per son. Once you have wr itten down their names, cr umble up the pieces of paper and mix them up in a jar, hat, bowl or liter ally anything you have lying around. Next, each per son dr aws a name. Whomever you have dr awn, you must take out on a nice date. I encour age you to not hold back and go all out with these dates. You can share your exper iences with each other as a group; it creates great memor ies with people you care about.

Valentine?s doesn?t have to be spent with a significant other or cr ying over a movie star r ing Julia Rober ts. It can be fun with the r ight people around you! Enjoy the day of love!

The Romans celebrated Lupercalia from February 13 to 15. The men slaughtered a goat and a dog before whipping ladies with the hides of the animals they had just slaughtered. The Romanticists " were inebriated. They were completely naked," Noel Lenski, a historian at the University of Colorado, Boulder, believes. Lenski claims that young women would actually line up for the males to hit them. They thought it would make them able to carry a child. A matchmaking lottery, in which young men picked the names of ladies from a jar, was part of the harsh festival. The couple would then, well, be partnered up for the length of the festival ? or longer if the fit seemed right. The name of our current day of love may also be attributed to the ancient Romans. On February 14 of various years in the third century A.D., Emperor Claudius II killed two individuals, both called Valentine. The Catholic Church commemorated their martyrdom with the dedication of St. Valentine's Day. Later, in the 5th century, Pope Gelasius I complicated things by mixing St. Valentine's Day with Lupercalia to evict the pagan ceremonies. However, the event was more of a theatrical depiction of what it used to be. Lenski continues, " It was a little more of a drunken party, but the Christians dressed it up again. Despite everything, it was a day of fecundity and love." Gallatin's Day was observed by the Normans at the same period. Gallatin means " woman lover."

VALENTINES: THE HISTORY

love, and kissy-face loyalty. But the origins of this candy and cupids event are actually dark, gory, and a little hazy. Though no one knows for certain, one decent place to start is ancient Rome, where males hit on women by, well, hitting them.

Valentine's Day is a holiday dedicated to romance,

BY: FARAH SAABNEH

VALENTINES TODAY The holiday became more enjoyable with time. It acquired appeal throughout Britain and the rest of Europe after Chaucer and Shakespeare glorified it in their works. In the Middle Ages, handmade paper cards were the token of the moment. The ritual eventually found its way to the New World. In the nineteenth century, the industrial revolution brought the introduction of factory-made cards. In 1913, Hallmark Cards of Kansas City, Missouri, began mass producing valentines. Since then, February has not been the same. Today, the holiday is huge business: last year's Valentine's Day sales were $17.6 billion, according to market research firm IBIS World, with this year's sales estimated to hit $18.6 billion. However, for many, commercializing has ruined the day. Helen Fisher, a sociologist at Rutgers University, believes humans are solely to blame. " This isn't a command performance," she points out. " If people did not want to buy Hallmark cards, they would not be purchased, and Hallmark would cease to exist."

So, in many ways, Valentine's Day is still celebrated. It?s my birthday, too, which till this day I can?t tell is a good or bad thing. I have never had a valentine which isn?t fun since it?s my birthday, and even if I did have a valentine, would he only get me one gift? I?m expecting two. Many people will spend a fortune on jewelry and flowers for their loved ones. Others will observe Single Awareness Day (SAD) by dining alone and bingeing on self-gifted chocolates. Some may even be enjoying this day in the manner of the early Romans. But shouldn?t get too far ahead of ourselves.

"THE LUTHOR NAME DOESN'T DESERVE LENA"

SUPERCORP SHOULD HAVE BEEN

CANON By Yasmine Dajani

"YOU'RE WITH ME, RIGHT?"

"ALWAYS" "A LUTHOR AND A SUPER WORKING TOGETHER" "KARA DANVERS, YOU ARE MY HERO" Source: Supergirl

Supergirl is a television show based on the DC comics, as a part of the Arrowverse TV universe. The show premiered on CBS in 2015 and aired on the network for the entirety of its first season before it was picked up by the CW for its second season. Supergirl ended in November 2021 after six seasons. It is a show about Kara Zor-El (Melissa Benoist), an alien from the planet Krypton sent to earth as a teenager upon the explosion of her planet to protect her cousin Kal-El (Tyler Hoechlin). However, her pod got knocked off course by the shockwave of the planet?s explosion and sent into the phantom zone, a region of space where time doesn?t pass, and by the time she got to earth her cousin had already grown up and come out to the world as Superman. She was raised by an adoptive family, the Danvers, and grew up hiding her identity, until her adopted sister?s plane crashing forced her to come out as Supergirl. In the second season of the show, Lena Luthor (Katie Mcgrath) was introduced as a character, the younger sister of the infamous Lex Luthor, trying to change the direction of her family company to make it a force for good, and changing its name to ?L-corp?to steer it away from her brother?s narrative. Lena and Kara met when Kara went to interview her with her cousin. The two had instant chemistry and garnered huge approval from fans everywhere, and Lena Luthor was made a regular. Throughout the season, the two characters?chemistry became undeniably more than just platonic, while the two were there for each other through thick and thin. A majority of the show?s fans started ?shipping?the pair and dubbed them Supercorp (Supergirl+L-Corp). During the second season, writers of the show wrote scenes that towed the line between platonic and

romantic more and more, going as far as writing scenes parallel to other romantic scenes in the show. W hen Kara?s love interest in the season, Mon-El, had to leave earth, presumably never to be seen again, fans believed that Supercorp would become canon. However, throughout the progression of the show, Kara and Lena?s interactions steered further and further away from platonic, but they never explored a real romance. This had fans of the show furious and accusing the showrunners of queerbaiting. Queerbaiting is a marketing technique through which writers of a show hint at a queer romance but never actually depict it. Supergirl writers denied those accusations, claiming that they couldn?t possibly be queerbaiting since they do have queer characters on the show. Supercorp fans were angry at the quick dismissal but most still kept watching until the show?s finale in the slight hope that maybe Supercorp would have a Catradora ending like in She-Ra and thePrincessof Power, meaning that the two would get together in the last moments of the show. That, however, was not the case, and instead, Kara and Lena had many moments in the finale with significant romantic undertones but no followthrough. The most significant being their final conversation at the wedding of Kara?s sister, Alex Danvers (Chyler Leigh), in which they had a heart-to-heart with Lena helping Kara talk through her feelings, as well as consoled her, in a manner typical of a significant other. The show ended with Kara taking Lena?s advice and coming out to the world as Supergirl. Despite this, fans found the ending to be quite unsatisfactory and are still convinced that Supercorp deserved better and should have been confirmed as cannon for a myriad of reasons.

There have been multiple instances of inherently romantic behaviors and interactions between Kara and Lena: - In the third season, Lena bought CatCo, a 750 million dollar company, simply because she knew how much it meant to Kara, and it was about to fall into the wrong hands. - On Lena?s first day working at Catco, Kara brought her a planner, ?a Danvers family tradition?, which she hadn?t done for James on his first, day two years earlier, in the exact same position Lena employed. - In the fifth season, before going to brunch at Lena?s apartment, Kara flew to Paris, Milan, and Dublin to get Lena?s favorite foods. - In the sixth season, after having a heart to heart about their worries while fighting a new villain whose powers are magical, Kara asked Lena ?do you really not believe in magic?? and rather than answer the questions, Lena gave her a loaded look and a simple ?I believe in you.? - W hen Lena told Kara that she was having nightmares, Kara went as far as breaking into a black-ops government unit to retrieve journals that would bring Lena comfort. - Throughout the entire show, there have been endless amounts of symbolism depicting Kara and Lena as more than they were. An example would be repeatedly dressing them in opposing colors or red and blue. On countless occasions, one of them has been dressed in red and the other in blue, with red symbolizing the more kept together half and blue the more vulnerable half of a unit. Typically, these outfits have shown up when the two were having emotional conversations, and the one who was more vulnerable in those conversations would be dressed in blue. Source: Supergirl

There have been more than a few parallels made between interactions between Kara and Lena and other romantic relationships or gestures: - In season two, when Lena covers Kara?s office with flowers to thank her for writing an article about her, somehow it isn?t considered romantic but a few episodes later, when Mxy, a fifth-dimensional being, does the same to her apartment, it is to ask for her hand in marriage. - On TheFlash Barry Allen and Iris West are considered to be a great love. Iris on many occasions has said, ?The Flash may be the city?s hero, but Barry Allen, you are my hero.?Along the same lines, Lena has repeatedly told Kara ?Supergirl may have saved me, but Kara Danvers, you are my hero?yet when Lena says it, it is considered platonic. - W hen Mon-El left earth, there was a scene with Kara sitting on her living room couch alone, crying over a picture of them, and that was depicted as Kara crying over a great love that she lost. However, when Kara and Lena were fighting, that scene was recreated but with a picture of Kara and Lena, and yet that was supposed to be platonic.

Kara believes in Lena beyond all logic and reason: - In the second season, when Kara and Lena were still getting to know each other, Lena?s mother was found to be in charge of a terrorist organization attempting to kill all aliens on earth, and when suspicion rose about Lena being involved, Kara refused to accept it and never lost hope in Lena. Later on in the season, Lena was accused of helping her mother escape prison and was arrested, but no matter how much her friends and family told her that Lena was guilty and how much evidence pointed against her, Kara never stopped fighting for the belief that Lena was innocent and eventually proved right. - In the third season, Lena was accused of accidentally poisoning children in the city with lead and was deemed a menace by the public, but Kara explored every possible outlet until she proved her innocent, even when Lena believed that she had done it.

Source: Supergirl

Lena and Kara need each other in every reality and in every context: - In the fourth season, there was a clone of Kara created by a Kryptonian stone in Kaznia, and that clone, Red Daughter, was taken in by Lex Luthor and raised to go undercover as Kara. W hile Red Daughter had none of Kara?s memories, she was obsessed with knowing more about Lena. The more she learned about Kara?s life the more she became interested in her, even going so far as to run away to meet her undercover as Kara. - In an effort to save her relationship with Lena after their rift in the 5th season, Kara teamed up with a 5th dimensional being to change the timeline. They tried different points in time at which Kara would tell Lena the truth about being Supergirl but none of them worked without significant consequences. Kara then decided to try a timeline in which she never met Lena but that one seemed to be the most disastrous of all. Lena and Kara never meeting meant Lena being kidnapped and experimented on by her mother, and in turn, turning evil and ruling National City. In that timeline, Lena kills Kara because Kara refuses to fight her. By the end of the episode, Kara decides that Lena being mad at her is better than the alternative.

Source: Supergirl

They are both willing to sacrifice the world for each other: - In the second season, Lena had to make the decision to kill her old boyfriend in order to save Supergirl for the greater good. Yet, when she had to decide between saving Kara from the phantom zone and saving the world from a pandemic of dementor-like phantoms, she chose Kara, and Kara?s own sister had to strong-arm her into the latter choice. - At the end of the fourth season, Lena shot her own brother in the chest because she believed he was a threat to Kara. - Kara was willing to let a shipment of deadly chemicals fall into the city?s water supply if it meant saving Lena. However, when it came down to a similar choice with Mon-El, she chose to save the world, even if it meant Mon-El would either die or need to flee the earth.

Lena and Kara had the potential to be a great slow-burn tale of star-crossed lovers, a Luthor and a Super beating all odds, but instead, they were used as a way to bait viewers into investing time and energy into something they knew there was little to no hope for. Supercorp has been characterized as ?the biggest queerbait in television history?and fans have repeatedly claimed that if Lena was a man they would have gotten together from the start. Supercorp should have been made canon in the finale, even if it was just to put fans at ease, because they were owed at least that.

Top 5 best hear tfelt r om ance m ovies to watch on Valentine's day this year ! By: Yasmina Abughazaleh

Since Valentine's Day is coming up, what better way to spend it than watching the most romantic, hear tfelt, and emotional movies you can think of, especially if you don't have a Valentine and still want to be comfor ted romantically on this somewhat special day for lover s and couples around the world. There are many many different romance movies out there that really hit the hear t, but here are the top five that might make you want to invest in a love life quickly!

#5: After Source: Pinterest

If you're looking for an intr iguing, romantic, dr amatic movie about two enemies who tur n into lover s, then this is the r ight film for you to watch! After is about a girl named Tessa Young who just moved to college and didn?t have many fr iends. She just had a boyfr iend back home, who was also really close to her mom. Ever ything was going pretty stable for her until she met the one, Hardin Scott, a ver y intimidating classmate, and known player. Playing tr uth or dare at a par ty unexpectedly led them to being in love, and always being together. But of cour se, like ever y movie, it's not romance without some dr ama. Tessa and Hardin go through a lot but still manage to come back to each other, facing the fear of losing each other again. This is the fir st movie of a tr ilogy, (After We Collided, and After We Fell). Many people loved this movie as it got a great r ating and great reviews. Over all, After is a great option to watch and should be your movie choice to watch at any time!

#4: Everything, Everything Source: Pinterest

This movie is one of a kind. It?s a stor y about two lover s tor n apar t by something that isn't in their control. A girl named Maddy suffer s from an immunodeficiency disorder which makes it unable for her to go out; therefore, she is forced to remain indoor s. One day she falls in love with her new neighbor, Olly, and they are always desper ate to see each other. But they know that isn't possible until they break the r ule. Olly wants to spend ever y moment of his life with her, and so does Maddy. But she knows that it is a dangerous r isk and how careful she should be with obeying her mother since her mother cares extremely and is str ict. And of cour se, it all concludes with a dr astic ending in the situation between these two lover s, but you?ll have to watch it to find out! Many people found this movie and the acting great, and the reviews/r atings were delightfully high. It will give you many mixed emotions and is definitely not a movie to skip watching, so add it to your list!

#3: Five Feet Apart Out of all movies, this is potentially the most hear tbreaking one! 5 Feet Apart is about a 17- year- old girl named Stella, and she basically lives at a hospital because of her cystic fibrosis. She meets a char ming boy named Will, who has the same illness, and they fall deeply for each other. They are told by the doctor s and nur ses that they must keep a distance from each other (5 feet) because of their illness, to be safe. That becomes impossible when they become extremely attached to each other, basically insepar able while breaking the r ules. When they got the oppor tunity, they just for got about their r ules in life and embr aced that affection with each other. All this leads to a hear tbreaking ending leaving all of us devastated for them. It is cer tain that this movie will leave you in tear s! But over all, the concept of this movie intr igued a lar ge audience and has a high r ating with multiple reviews on how great the movie is. I 100% recommend!

#2: The Notebook Source: Pinterest

I?m sure you may have heard of The Notebook before; it's one of the most famous or iginal romance movies star ting from the 2000s! Ever yone who has seen it knows the romantic stor y. It?s a passionate, intense, and eventful film! The movie is about two lover s, Allie and Noah, who met at a car nival one night. They fell in love; although they got separ ated by Allie?s parents because they disapproved of their relationship since Noah came from a wealthy family, so they moved Allie away. It was hear tbreaking for both of them since they loved each other and wanted to be together. Eventually, they reunite, and stuff gets interesting. This comfor ting movie from 2004 touches the audience?s hear ts, while ever yone romanticizes a love stor y/relationship like this. Definitely watch it (or re- watch it if you already have) if you are in the mood for an emotional film. Don?t for get to have tissues and a blanket by your side! You will need extr a comfor t. And popcor n. Obviously, you can't for get that.

#1: The Fault In Our Stars Source: Pinterest

Nothing can compare to this movie. This movie touches your hear t the most. It is an emotional roller coaster, as well as an amazingly produced movie. The actor s did a ver y good job as well. This final movie is about two teenager s diagnosed with different types of cancer, named Hazel and Augustus. They met at a cancer suppor t group one day, and couldn?t take their eyes off of each other. Augustus tr ies to take Hazel out and hang out with her to show his interest. Sooner or later, they fall in love. Life feels weightless when they are together. It?s like their sickness doesn?t exist. All the jokes, sarcasm, and intimate moments together really brought out their feelings about each other in cer tain scenes. Hazel was also able to reach out to her favor ite author and ended up tr aveling to Amsterdam with Augustus and her mother. Things get super emotional and go downhill towards the end of the movie, but you will just have to watch to find out! The ending will most likely leave you in tear s. This movie got great reviews and a high r ating, and a big number of people read the book. I definitely recommend watching on Valentine?s day!
