A Letter f r om the Akhbar Staf f School is a place f or lear ning, and we, the staf f of The Akhbar , have cer tainly lear ned a lot since our f ir st issue back in September of this year . Impor tantly, we've lear ned the jour nalistic pr ocess is one that involves multiple stages of editing, dur ing which we cooper ate with one another to both give and r eceive f eedback in or der to pr oduce the best content we can. It involves a deep r espect and under standing of our audience and their concer ns. We came to the r ealization as a class, that if we wished to r each our audience in ever y issue, our wr iting would have mor e dir ection. We r ef lected and we def ined pur pose. Together we wr ote, r e-wr ote, voted, discussed and f inally ar r ived at a mission statement together as a class. This tr uly a milestone in the histor y of the publication. It's included below, in case you'r e inter ested. We'r e tr ying to live it out in this issue and each one that f ollows. In this issue you'll see we've r edesigned our r epor ting to f ocus mor e on student issues on and of f campus. We've also added "Veiwpoints"; a r epor ting section dedicated to giving voice to the opinions on r elevant topics in the high school. We'r e staying tr ue to our r eader s, and keeping our f ocus on quality wr iting and r epor ting.

We hope you'll continue to enjoy the har d wor k and dedication put into this amazing collabor ation by each and ever y single wr iter .

Q: I n y ou r op i n i on , h ow m u ch r esp on si bi l i t y (or ev en bl am e) can y ou p u t on a coach ? On p l ay er s?
A: Coaches can be blam ed som etim es, for poor gam e-tim e decisions or lack of r elationships with player s, but m ost tim es issues ar ise when coaches' styles clash with player s' ability. I t needs to be a good fit for both coach and player s. But at the end of the day it's up to the player s to get the job done. I always tell m y player s even if the coach as a bad plan, if we all follow the sam e plan we'll be alr ight. I n case the r elationship doesn't wor k between coach and player s in pr o spor ts, it's easier to get r id of a coach, than to tur n a r oster ar ound.
Q: I n y ou r op i n i on , h ow m u ch r esp on si bi l i t y (or ev en bl am e) can y ou p u t on a coach ? On p l ay er s?
A: The cr iter ia is sim ple: it's winning. W hen you lose, spectator s star t questioning the coaches' decisions, player s star t questioning the system , even if the system has pr oved to be successful. I t's all about winning,.W hat m akes a good coach is good player s. I coached som e gr eat player s, and they m ade m e look good m aking all their shots, and that was gr eat coaching, r ight? I coached som e bad player s that couldn't m ake a layup, so they m ade m e look bad and ever yone was questioning m y coaching. That is the per ception of the spectator s, unfor tunately. So, th er e you h ave it. Th e bal an ce between coach an d pl ayer can be difficu l t to ach ieve, bu t is essen tial for a team to win . M r . K : I feel that m usic can play a r ole in cr eating a positive atm ospher e, but it m ust be applied cor r ectly. I use it to star t m y lessons, but I often am hesitant to use it dur ing class because it can easily becom e a distr action. M s. S :I f m usic is able to com plem ent or enhance a lesson in som e way, then it can be an effective tool for lear ning. M or e than anything however , I believe that m usic can be especially effective for differ ent lear ner s (i.e. auditor y, kinĂŚsthetic) , aiding in concentr ation or m otivation in var ious activities. Myt h: The Federal Government was Invol ved in t he St ory In one scene, federal agents go into Dr. Omalu?s boss?office and arrest him. Omalu exclaims that they are attacking his boss to get to him; however, this is not true. Omalu?s boss, Cyril Wecht, was indeed arrested by the government, but it was unrelated to the Omalu?s pursuit of concussion-related diseases. The fact that this? arrest is related to the NFL has strong implications, the most serious of which is that the NFL?s commissioner asked the federal government for assistance in helping get rid of Omalu. This is not only false, but also insulting to the United States?government. In reality, the arrest occurred 3 months prior to Omalu?s work and was about an unrelated incident. While, in the movie, Omalu proclaims to never testify against his boss. In reality, he testified in court and attempted to claim his boss?old job, although he ultimately failed.
The Fresh Prince takes on a more serious role to help spread aw areness about concussions and CTE
