MESSAGES FROM THE
ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT Dear ASD students and parents, Each year we look forward to opening our Athletic season and building upon the previous year’s success. This year is no exception, however we have a number of changes to introduce for our program. These changes will see a greater range of opportunities for our students and more focus on each stage of their development. First, the Athletics Department welcomes Mark Buschini to our team. Mark is the Associate Athletic Director and will oversee our development programs: the U14 athletics program, Grade 6 JEAC program and Mini Falcons program. Mark comes to ASD with a wealth of knowledge and experience in building programs, playing experience, coaching and athletic directing. Mark’s focus will be on fundamental skill development and teamwork. With this dedicated position in place it will ensure a strong foundation for our Junior Varsity and Varsity programs. Additionally, we welcome Jill Spinks, the new Administrative Assistant to the Athletic Department. Jill is someone who will support the Athletic Department to the highest standard. Jill has a degree in Physical Health Education and is passionate about working with studentathletes. Jill brings a strong sense of commitment and dedication to her work and will add detail to our programs implementation. The Emirates Athletic Conference (EAC) in which ASD founded was dissolved in the Fall of 2015. Former member schools will remain closely affiliated for exchanges and opportunities for our students, but no final tournament will take place. With this change comes opportunity. ASD now has the ability to seek highly competitive exchanges across the Emirates for our Junior Varsity and Varsity sports teams. Invitational tournaments will be an addition leading into our culminating regional MESAC tournaments. The athletics program continues to expand the number of offerings to our student body. In 2014-2015 we added the U14 track and field program, dance and cheer. This year, we are adding golf to our fall season. The golf team will compete in a MESAC invitational tournament hosted by the American Community School of Abu Dhabi (ACS). The changes outlined make this year an exciting time to be a Falcon at ASD. These increased opportunities will see more students involved in our program and growth within the programs offered. One constant at ASD is that involvement in sports is a privilege, and carries responsibilities. Commitment is critical for the success of the team as well a student’s personal development. It is not always easy to manage the demands of a busy school schedule. However, with good personal organization and planning a high standard of both academics and athletics is achievable. I encourage all student-athletes to set high goals at every level of participation. Represent yourself and your school with ‘Falcon Pride’ as we set our common goal on excellence. Dear ASD parents and students, I warmly welcome you to another thrilling year of Falcon athletics. I am certain there will be many constructive and rewarding lessons your child will experience being a part of our athletic program. I am very excited to be joining the ASD Athletic Department and look forwad to working alongside the coaches, studentathletes, parents and the Booster Club to make the 2015-2016 school year a successful one. I will primarily oversee the Under 14 (U14), and the Junior Emirates Athletic Conference (JEAC) teams, but will be heavily involved with all aspects of the athletic department and look to continue the fantastic athletic program ASD offers our a. Our U-14 and JEAC student-athletes will continue to compete against schools locally in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The exchanges and tournaments our student-athletes participate in are opportunities for each team to work towards their individual and team goals as well as focusing on ASD’s Core Values of compassion, excellence, integrity, respect and responsibility. Through our high quality athletic program, student-athletes will challenge themselves to strive for continuous improvement and their personal best while ensuring good sportsmanship is always at the forefront of what they do. I am excited to begin the school year and feel lucky to be a part of an outstanding athletic program. QUICK FACTS & CONTACT DETAILS The Athletic Department is responsible for after school sports and competitive interscholastic teams. This includes the Mini Falcons, JF6 Junior Falcons, U14, Junior Varsity and Varsity sports programs including golf, dance, swimming, volleyball, soccer, basketball, tennis, wrestling, cross country, cheer, softball, baseball, badminton, and track & field. The Physical Education Department is responsible for teaching required physical education courses, in school intramural competitions, and special events such as Sport Days. The Campus Recreation Department is responsible for recreation based activities, intramurals, and pay per session training programs which include a variety of sport-centered activities. The Booster Club is responsible for supporting and encouraging ASD athletes and coaches as well as fostering school spirit within the community. Booster volunteers participate in a variety of ways including organizing concessions for ASD hosted tournaments, selling spirit merchandise, helping to organize the seasonal recognition events and raising funds to support scholarships and the athletic program.

ASD TEAM PHILOSOPHIES FOR EACH AGE GROUP Our philosophy has and always will be to provide the opportunity for all our students to participate in as many sports as possible in order to emphasize the team spirit for the athletic department as a whole. Our program will have the best possible facilities and equipment, and will be operated in a first class manner. We intend to continue a winning attitude but at the same time keep in mind our primary goals, which are to teach self-control and good sportsmanship. We also keep in mind the values of learning responsibility, daily needs of our athletes and look to carryover values which will remain for a lifetime. By being involved in ASD athletics, students will benefit from an experience that will make him/her a better person for having participated.
JUNIOR VARSITY (JV) PHILOSOPHY
UNDER 14 (U14) PHILOSOPHY
VARSITY PHILOSOPHY
The philosophy at the U14 level is to provide the student-athlete with proper skills and fundamentals to develop them for the next level of participation. It is our intent to provide playing time for all qualified team members. Within reason, playing time is more important than winning and losing. We encourage all student-athletes to fully participate in our intramural programs to continue their social and physical development.
This level is the ultimate in interscholastic athletics. By this time, the students-athletes have been exposed to their individual sport for several years and have the background to make the commitment necessary to play at ASD. Winning is very important, but only within the ethical concepts of competition. The most important factor for a student-athlete to be successful at this level is that he/she knows and understands his/her role on the team.
Almost all players on the junior varsity team have had prior experience in a chosen sport and have decided to make a commitment to that program for the next few years. The balance between playing time for everyone, the improvement of individual skills and the introduction to more advanced team concepts for the more advanced player is beginning to shift. No longer will the emphasis be on every player getting playing time, but it will change more towards team concept. A key is how well do the player’s individual skills fit into the total team framework. This is not to say that only the starting players will play, but the team concept must be developed and a winning attitude established.

THE ASD STUDENT-ATHLETE Being a member of an ASD interscholastic team is a privilege to be earned and maintained throughout the season. Each time participants visit a school, step onto a practice field, or compete in a contest he/she is expected to represent themselves, their family, their team and the ASD community in a responsible and sportsmanlike manner. Every athlete will have not only the athletic capability but the academic worthiness to participate in the sport of their choice. 12 | ASD Athletics Handbook 2015/16
PLAYER CODE OF CONDUCT AND CONTRACT All students are expected to abide by the rules, regulations, and policies of the American School Dubai, and the MESAC and invitational tournaments. All Junior Varsity and Varsity players and their parents must read and sign a copy of the Players Code Card, which is issued to team members at the beginning of each season. This Players Code Card is to be returned to the coach and will be kept on file with the Athletic Department. Violations of the contract may lead to dismissal from a team or the student being sent home from an event, in addition to being referred to the school administration for further possible consequences. ( See sample, Appendix A)
ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITY POLICIES Student Code: Students participating in cocurricular programs are considered to be in positions of leadership; therefore, it is an honor to represent ASD, not a right. Students represent their school and the community. In order to participate in cocurricular activities at ASD, a student can not be earning more than one grade below a C- on the aggregate scale. Eligibility is reviewed three times a year at the following times: 1. First midsemester progress report issued 2. First semester report card 3. Second semester report card (to determine eligibility for 1st season following year)
CONDITIONAL PARTICIPATION If a student is receiving one grade below a C- on the aggregate scale in any subject at the designated time of the eligibility check, both the student and parents will be informed by their respective administrator that participation in any activity is conditional. Participation in any sport or activity requires a meeting with the Athletic or Arts Director, coach, parent and student in order to create an academic plan for success. If it is found that the student does not adhere to the conditions set forth in the academic plan, or academic improvement is not seen, the student will be removed from the activity. A coach/principal/teacher may prevent a student from representing the school for a breach of the Student Code. Eligibility of new students who enter ASD and students on academic or behavior probation will be determined by the school principal prior to the start of the season. In addition, students must demonstrate punctuality and regular attendance at school. Any student deemed to have excessive tardiness or absences from school or individual classes (as determined by the principal and counselor) may also be ineligible to participate in cocurricular events. (In every case, a student must be in school on the day of an after school event, and in school the day before and day of an away trip in order to participate.)
SUMMARY 1. Students can have no more than one grade below a C- on the aggregate scale. 2. Students who are deemed ineligible will be notified by their respective Administrator and an Academic Plan put in place. 3. Students receiving one grade below a C- on the aggregate scale will be on a conditional participation plan. 4. Coaches, principals and faculty may prevent students from travel. 5. New students, and students on academic probation will need principal approval in order to participate in activities. ASD Athletics Handbook 2015/16 | 13
TRYOUTS Student-athletes have a right to know the standards upon which participants are selected for a team. All studentathletes must have an opportunity (at least two days) to demonstrate their skill and abilities before cuts are made in any sport. Upon request the coach will meet with each individual and attempt to explain reasons why he/she did not make the team. PRACTICE & COMPETITIONS PARTICIPATION Practices, competitions, and attending corresponding team events are mandatory for all student-athletes. To be excused, the student-athlete must notify the coach prior to the practice or competition with a valid reason. Absences should be avoided whenever possible. Anyone missing a practice or an event without permission from his/her coach will be unexcused. Two unexcused absences will be grounds for dismissal from the team. Excused school attendance will be considered an excused absence. A 100% attendance is expected, however, in order for student-athletes to Letter or receive an award they must attend a minimum of 85% of all scheduled practices and games which would be monitored through attendance taken by both the coach and team captain and given to Athletic Director’s Assistant. (See Appendix C) If a student-athlete does not make the 85% attendance requirement they may NOT be allowed to participate in the travel tournament whether it is a home tournament or away. In addition, the student-athlete is NOT allowed to leave the sporting event until all ASD teams have finished playing. It is the responsibility of all players to support their fellow ASD student-athletes. HOMEWORK, TESTS, QUIZZES Each student travelling with a team is expected to turn in a completed green homework form to their coach for approval one week prior to travel. The green homework form shows that each teacher is aware the student will be absent from school and the student is aware of the work that will be missed and made up before or after the trip in the agreed upon time. TEAM PLACEMENT AT A LEVEL OTHER THAN THE DESIGNATED AGE OR GRADE LEVEL Student-athletes will begin practice with their own age or grade level. After consultation with coaches, the head coach will recommend any level change to the Athletic Director for approval. If administrative approval is granted, the head coach will discuss the move with the player and parents of the player. If all parties agree that the move is in the overall best interest of the player, team, and program, then the move will be allowed. The physical, emotional, and social well-being of the athlete will be the main criteria for decisions. The above criteria are designed for sports that have two or three levels of competition. Some sports, such as wrestling, tennis, cross country, track and field, swimming, and badminton do not by their nature fit the above criteria. PLAYING TIME Participating on an athletic team is a privilege, not a right. The coach determines playing time based on the following: respect, attitude, self-discipline, coachability, knowledge of the sport, and athletic talent. PARTICIPATING ON AN OUTSIDE TEAM Student-athletes of an ASD team must remember that their first commitment is to their school sponsored team. Practice and competitions with the school team come before any outside team, unless given prior approval. Should the student-athlete violate this policy, it could be grounds for dismissal. DROPPING OUT OF A SPORT If there are extenuating circumstances that necessitate dropping a sport during the first half of the season, the student-athlete must consult the coach and explain the circumstances. Depending on the circumstances, the student-athlete may be granted a release. If a student-athlete drops a sport without consulting the coach, they will not be allowed to participate in another sport or in an off-season sport conditioning program during season unless receiving permission from both the coaches and Athletic Director. Student-athletes must return and or pay for all issued equipment to the Athletic Department before being released. QUITTING A SPORT When a student-athlete decides to participate in a sport, and is selected for a team, the Athletic Department and coaches expect the studentathlete to complete the season. If a student-athlete decides to quit a sport or is dismissed for disciplinary reasons during the last half of the season, that individual will miss the following season of participation. The studentathlete will not be permitted to try out for another sport unless all issued equipment is returned and/or paid for. ASD Athletics Handbook 2015/16 | 15
UNIFORM & EQUIPMENT POLICY Student-athletes are responsible for any uniforms and equipment issued to them by the Athletic Department. Student-athletes are expected to keep all issued items clean and in good condition. Families are financially responsible for all items issued and will reimburse the Athletic Department for all items not returned within one week after the season. They will not be permitted to try out for another sport unless all items issued are returned and/or paid for. In addition, any refusal to adhere to this policy will prohibit eligibility for athletic awards. Student-athletes are to wear only athletic department approved equipment.
DRESS CODE ON GAME OR TRAVEL DAY Student-athletes should wear appropriate attire on game day so as to represent our school and team properly. (e.g. white dress shirt with red tie or red travel polo, khaki or black dress slacks/ skirt, closed-toe dress shoes) Each coach will impose the set guidelines for a dress code at their discretion, with administrative approval. Students will travel in game day attire to and from all MESAC events and must be in travel attire to attend the MESAC Awards Banquet.
CURFEW DURING A MESAC TOURNAMENT – HOME & AWAY Curfew guidelines are established from the MESAC code of conduct and consequences are outlined in player code cards and the Red Travel book. Visiting students will be in the home of the host family no later than the curfew set by MESAC of 10.00 p.m., or as soon as possible after a scheduled activity is completed, whichever is later. The hosting Tournament Director may list an earlier curfew time.
EPIPEN MEDICAL NOTICE Any student requiring an epipen is responsible for carrying and supplying the necessary epipens for games or tournaments.

All athletes must abide by MESAC Regulations: n The use of tobacco, drinking of alcohol, or use of illegal drugs will not be allowed during travel or while in the host city during the period of time covered by the MESAC activity. n Any sightseeing or travel in the host city will be done only with the permission of the host family and the coach/sponsor. n Under no circumstances will housing arrangements be changed without permission of the hosting Tournament Director and the knowledge of the coach/sponsor. n All laws of the host country will be adhered to by studentathletes. n Any unusual circumstances or problems which occur during a stay in the host city will be reported as soon as is possible to either the hosting Tournament Director or visiting coach/ sponsor.
RECIPROCAL HOUSING REQUIREMENT The success of the athletic program is dependent on a reciprocal housing arrangement between international schools participating in MESAC. When traveling on overnight trips to other schools, ASD student-athletes are housed by families of the host school. In turn, when teams visit ASD they are housed with the families of ASD athletes. During tournaments, 100-200 visitors need to be housed. It is also recommended that families host two or more visitors at a time since both parties are usually more at ease. In these instances, all ASD student-athletes (participating at the MESAC level) are required to house visiting students even if for an unrelated sport. The Athletic Department will do everything it can to make housing as practical for host families as possible. At the start of the year, all athletic team members must sign up for their preferred housing dates. This form is attached to the Players Code Card. No athlete can compete until this form has been handed in to the coach. Housing visitors is an extra responsibility for our busy families but it also provides a wonderful opportunity for international exchange and new friendships. Many of our host families speak fondly of their experiences with students from all over the world. The ASD athletics program covers all costs associated with local transportation to and from all EAC and MESAC competitions.
Each ASD sports coach gives three awards: a Most Valuable Player Award, Most Improved Player Award and the Coach’s Award (for commitment, leadership, dedication, or improvement). These are issued in the form of a letter and/or pins at the Booster Athletics Recognition Evening. No award or ASD sports bag will be issued to a student-athlete who has not met the 85% attendance requirement according to the attendance record.
TRAVEL POLICY n It is the student’s responsibility to inform the coach of his/her intent to travel with the final MESAC team prior to the final roster being announced. n The coach submits the MESAC final roster in order to secure the group airplane booking. n Any student wishing to use Skywards points or individual booking must notify the Athletic Department prior to the final MESAC roster being announced. No students will be allowed to travel on standby tickets (only secured seats will be allowed). Failure to follow this process allows the airline to charge penalty fees and these fees will be charged to the individual student athlete, to be settled with the ASD Business Office.
INSURANCE As stated in the Players Code Card, (Appendix A), the parent agrees to pay all costs, charges and expenses incurred in relationship to providing medical care and releases The American School of Dubai and its representatives from responsibility for all medical costs. Private travel and medical insurance is an individual family responsibility for seeking out coverage prior to the given travel dates. 18 | ASD Athletics Handbook 2015/16
There are also five major awards of distinction (see below) given each year, and are determined by coaches’ nominations as well as faculty input.
ASD ATHLETE OF THE YEAR AWARD The Senior School Award for Athlete of the Year is presented to the most outstanding boy and girl for Senior Varsity (grades 11 & 12) and Junior Varsity (grades 9 &10). Athletes are assigned up to 5 points for their level of achievement and are accumulated for up to three sports a year. The names of the winning athletes are engraved on a plaque displayed at the school. The athlete also receives an individual plaque of recognition. In some cases, it may be possible that no student is named as Athlete of the Year if criteria have not been met in a truly distinctive manner, or, two outstanding athletes may share the distinction. In the case of a tie, coaches and the Athletic Director will consider a student’s leadership during the year, and whether the student has participated in three seasons. Students attaining Varsity status will be given preference over those at the JV level for Varsity Athlete of the Year. This award is presented at the Booster Athletics Awards Banquet.
ASD SCHOLAR/ATHLETE AWARD
AMBASSADOR’S SPORTS AWARDS
This award goes to an outstanding junior or senior scholar athlete. The recipient will have a final cumulative GPA of 3.8 in all subjects and a high standard of athletic ability, participation in school sports, and sense of sportsmanship. The coaches nominate their top three candidates and the high school and middle school faculties make the final decision. This award is presented at the high school and middle school awards ceremonies.
Presented to the Varsity girl and boy, JV girl and boy, and middle school girl and boy who, in the opinion of coaches, have made major contributions to the ASD athletic program. Areas considered include sportsmanship, attitude, skills and the ability to get along with peers and coaches. These awards are presented at the Sports Banquet for the Varsity and JV recipients, and middle school recipients are presented at the middle school recognition assembly.
THE MEGAN GARRISON ATHLETIC AWARD This award is given in memory of Megan Garrison, an ASD student from 1994-95. This is to recognize an outstanding male or female athlete who, like Megan, has demonstrated an exemplary work ethic, along with the qualities of good sportsmanship, dedication, enthusiasm and pride. To be eligible, the student must have participated in a minimum of two sports during his/her senior year at ASD. This award is presented at the graduation ceremony, and is decided on by the coaching staff.
BOOSTER SCHOLARSHIPS The ASD Booster Club established a scholarship program in 2013 to support seniors in achieving their post secondary school dreams. Scholarships are awarded annually to senior student-athletes who have participated in Athletics while in high school at ASD. Eligible seniors may apply for selection through the Booster Club. Information is available from Booster Club. These awards are presented at the Booster Athletics Awards Ceremony at the end of the school year.
THE MIKE ROSS AWARD Mike Ross was the ASD Athletic Director from 1992 1995. This award is given in his memory to a senior who exemplifies the qualities that Mike stood for in both his professional and personal life: strength of character, personal integrity, leadership and a true concern for others, coupled with a strong commitment to athletics. CODE OF ETHICS FOR PARENTS & FANS Parents have a vital role in their child’s life and being a fan is one of them. Parents want the very best for their son/daughter and being a positive and supportive role model is one of them. Parents should: n Conduct themselves as mature role models, supporting the team in a positive manner. n Respect the decisions made by the game officials and tournament personnel. n Cheer for their team whether they are successful or not and use phrases that are positive and uplifting. n Never boo the visiting team or cheer when the opposition makes a bad play or performs poorly. n Recognize outstanding performances on both sides of the playing court. The athlete expects parents and fans to: n Support the players, team and coach regardless of the outcome of the match. n Cheer in a positive manner at all times during the game. n Not interfere with the coaching, officiating or practice routine of any team. n Support the athletes with enthusiasm and composure. Sportsmanship demands parents and fans to: n React in a respective manner to a coaching or officiating decision that may seem questionable. n Treat visiting teams with respect. n Cheer for both teams during the player introduction and at the end of the match.
GUIDELINES FOR HOSTING PARENTS These MESAC Guidelines are intended for the use of parents hosting visitors for tournaments and friendly international matches. Curfews are set by the school for each event, however host parents may ask their guests to observe an earlier curfew, but they may not extend the curfew or modify any other MESAC rules for their guests. 1. During the period of the tournament or competition hosts represent the parents of the athletes they are hosting. The same care and supervision exercised in the host family’s home will apply to the athletes being hosted. 2. The regulations for student behavior are listed on the player contract. The visiting athletes will have already agreed to observe these rules and regulations. 3. Any violations must be reported immediately to the responsible official as designated by MESAC: Tournament Director, Housing Coordinator, and Athletic Director. 4. Neither host families nor students may negotiate changes to the MESAC regulations for students with respect to curfew, housing arrangements, the use of tobacco, alcohol or drugs or any other rules or provisions set forth by the host school. 5. Host families are to contact their assigned athletes at the time designated by the host school. 6. Host families must arrange for suitable transportation to and from the sporting events, which is normally a private car. Taxis are an appropriate means of transport only if a host member accompanies the guest. Students with a UAE driver’s license are not allowed to drive visiting students. 7. Host families must provide visiting students with suitable meals when applicable: breakfast and dinner 8. Host families should offer a box lunch to the visiting students during the competition unless declined. 9. All athletes will be expected to provide housing during the year regardless of the sport. THE ASD COACH Because of our commitment to excellence, coaches at ASD become one of the most important components of our athletic program. Coaches are responsible for modeling positive behavior and attitude at all times. Coaches are both a participant and teacher at the same time.

In order to be considered an effective coach and role model, our coaches must be knowledgeable in their sport, prepared, motivating, and able to make adjustments during competition. In short, coaches have great responsibility and opportunity to mold young lives. Coaches must: n Act professionally at all times. Remember that their first interest is the students, second is the school and last any ego. n Keep open lines of communication with their players, parents and the Athletic Director at all times, concerning all matters. n Act as a liaison between players and their teachers if additional tutoring is needed for academic success. n Know and follow rules and regulations set by the American School of Dubai. n Work with the Athletic Director on issues and concerns and follow directions set forth by the Athletic Director. n Complete all paperwork that is required by the Athletic Department to allow our students to participate in MESAC or EAC by the predetermined date. n Create, post and follow meaningful practice schedules throughout the season to allow for the improvement of our athletes. n Make sure players are prepared for all upcoming events. n Supervise teams during practice and games. Coaches will teach and model good sportsmanship to student-athletes as well as what it means to be gracious in both victory and defeat through both words and actions. n Create announcements to be placed in ASD news sources two days prior to every sporting event and immediately after the event highlighting the performance of players. Announcements are to be sent to the high school, the middle school, Athletic Department and Communications Office. n Attend the game prior to or following their own game with team members to show community spirit and support. Players must attend 85% of the corresponding teams’ event. n Maintain and update the team page on the Athletic Department website. The team page is required to have a welcome letter from the coach. Training videos, encouragement, reminders, and team photos may also be added.
n Keep accurate attendance records of practices, games, and corresponding games. (See Appendix C). This attendance is required by the Athletic Department when submitting the End of Season Report. n Promote the attendance of the same sport event at different levels. n Choose the award winning student-athletes. ASD CONSIDERS THE FOLLOWING WHEN APPRAISING ITS COACHES nW as the season a positive experience for the athlete? n Did the players learn and improve throughout the season? n Did the individuals and team represent the school in an exemplary fashion? Success is measured if the above criteria are met. Wins and championships take care of themselves and will occur if and when everything else falls into place. Coaches are to be respected and not be judged on the basis of record. Both winning and losing are contingent upon available talent, injuries, the schedule and any number of factors. APPENDIX A: CODE CARD AMERICAN SCHOOL OF DUBAI ATHLETIC (CODE) PARTICIPATION FORM
l. Athletic Code: It is an honor to represent ASD, not a right. Students participating in extra-curricular programs are considered to be in positions of leadership. They represent the school and the community.. 1. In order to participate in athletics at ASD, each student must not be earning more than one grade below C- on the aggregate scale. Grades will be checked prior to the start of each athletic season. 2.Each student must have his/her parent sign the Athletic Code, Participation Consent/Medical Release and Reciprocal Housing portions of this card and return it to the Athletic Office before he/she can participate. Major housing requirements for 2015-2016 are: • MESAC Varsity Soccer, February 10-14, 2016 • MESAC Varsity Baseball/Softball, April 22-26, 2016 3. An athlete who quits after being recognized as a team member or is released from a team for disciplinary reasons may not join another team during that season. 4. All athletes are required to travel to and from away contests with the team in school-provided transportation. Permission to return home with parents after an away contest may be granted.
5. Athletes will be issued the best possible equipment/uniforms. Each athlete will assume responsibility for this equipment/uniform and will be assessed for any lost or damaged equipment. Equipment/uniforms issued to the athlete will be worn or used only when participating in interscholastic contests. Failure to return all equipment/uniforms promptly at the end of the season are required to reimburse the Athletic Department and this may result in the forfeit of all awards. 6. Attendance: A student is expected to attend 100% of all scheduled practices and games. However, it is recognized that 100% attendance may not be possible due to acceptable reasons such as sickness and injury or a family emergency. A student may miss a maximum of 15% of scheduled practices and games for sickness, injury and involvement in other school-related activities and still be a member of the team and eligible for MESAC and invitational travel, tournament play or athletic awards. Students are expected to schedule non school-related activities (ex. Employment, community sports) so as not to conflict with any scheduled practices or games. In addition, student/athletes are required to stay at the sporting event until all ASD teams have performed for that day. 7. Student Conduct and Behavior: Athletes are expected to conduct themselves at all times in such a manner as to reflect credit on themselves, ASD and the school community. Behavior not in compliance with the ASD Student Code of Conduct or any behavior not in the best interest of the school/team that occurs outside the parameters of the non-athletic situation or during an athletic situation may constitute grounds for suspension or dismissal from the team, depending on the gravity of the offense.
8. Use of Alcohol, Tobacco and Harmful Drugs during school sponsored activities: If it becomes known to an administrator, or coach that an athlete has consumed alcohol, tobacco products of any kind or harmful drugs during the season, the result will be as follows: First offense - immediate dismissal from the team and all awards/benefits for that season will be forfeited. The student will not be eligible for any new activity for a period of six weeks. Second offense – one-year suspension from athletics and other extra-curricular activities. Third offense – Expulsion from all extra-curricular activities for remainder of school career. 9. MESAC policy dictates the following for major rule violations during MESAC events: The student will no longer participate in that activity. The student may be sent home at the parents’ expense. A student in the possession or having used alcohol, tobacco, or illegal drugs will be excluded for one calendar year from MESAC events including the same activity the following year. A student committing a curfew violation will be excluded for one calendar year from MESAC events including the same activity the following year. By taking this form to each of his/her teachers, he/she notifies them of his impending absence and, in turn, receives the assignments that he or she will miss.

GLOSSARY Friendly Match A competition organized between two teams on a friendly basis. Team standings are not recorded and rule adjustments may be made if agreed to by both parties. MESAC The Middle East Schools Activities Conference is a sports organization that sets rules and standards by which our school teams play. It organizes tournaments for U14, Junior Varsity, and Varsity teams in a variety of sports. The three day tournaments are hosted by member schools on a rotating basis. Its membership includes schools in and around the Gulf (Abu Dhabi, Doha, Cairo, and Dubai). ASD Booster Club A parent volunteer organization that supports the Athletic Department by raising funds, organizing volunteers, staffing concession stands and providing opportunities for community events. Any parent of a student athlete participating as a member of a sports team is considered a member. There is a governing board of members that coordinates all efforts of the Booster Club but all parents are welcome to volunteer and participate in Booster events under the guidance of the Booster Board. Varsity and Junior Varsity The strongest senior school team is called Varsity. This team is typically made up of Grade 10-12 students; however may include Grade 9 (if approved for age group placement by the Athletic Director). The second strongest team is called the Junior Varsity (JV). This team develops younger high school players. It is typically made up of Grade 9 and 10 students; however, may include grade 8 (if approved for age group placement by the Athletic Director).

Spirit Council This is a high school student volunteer organization responsible for coordinating school sanctioned activities in an effort to promote school spirit. The Spirit Council will work with the Booster Club and the Athletic Department. The Spirit Council will have at least five student representatives from each grade to lead activities and will be guided by a teacher sponsor. Pep Rallies Student-led celebrations for high school students to raise school spirit prior to a sporting event. All inseason athletes and coaches will participate. These events are coordinated and approved by the Administration and Varsity Club Council with the focus on raising and maintaining school spirit. Players Code Card A document that must be read, understood and agreed to by both parents and student. This includes the Athlete Code, Participation Consent, Medical Release, Reciprocal Housing, Contact and Medical Information forms. It is a form which is given by the coach on the first day of practice and must be returned to the coach within the first. *See Appendix B. Lettering A student-athlete letters when he/she participates on an ASD athletic team and attends 85% or more of scheduled games and practices throughout that season.
