Using Your Course Description Guide The American School of Dubai is committed to assisting our Middle School students to succeed in a robust program of study during their 6th, 7th and 8th grade years and to be well prepared for the transition to high school. The pillars of this program are our challenging core courses in the disciplines of mathematics, English language arts, science and social studies. This academic rigor is one component of a multi-dimensional education that also emphasizes physical, artistic, musical, and linguistic development. Our program is rounded out with enrichment courses that invite students to explore areas of interest in a more focused, project-oriented manner. This year we are excited to be developing enrichment courses in the areas of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and Global Issues Network. We believe these two areas offer great potential for students to expand their ability to adapt and contribute in our rapidly changing world. This guide is designed to assist parents and students in navigating the course selection process for the middle school years through providing a greater understanding of our course offerings and a greater understanding of our overall program goals. Students; please read carefully and explore the available options with your parents. Talk about long-term goals (e.g. learning to play an instrument, learning a language, becoming a scientist) when you make your selections for arts, languages and enrichments. Parents; listen carefully to your children and help them to think through their choices in terms of their goals, ambitions and interests. Middle School at the American School of Dubai Early adolescence is a unique time in a child’s life when physical and emotional characteristics are rapidly changing. Societal expectations for these emerging young adults increase. The middle school years are clearly a period of transition. Overview Of Courses CORE COURSES Core courses are the foundational learning program of the Middle School experience. Each student in the Middle School will learn in full year core courses in Math, English Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, and Physical Education. Starting in 7th Grade students will also choose one World Language, which is also considered a core course.

CREATIVE ARTS COURSES Creative Arts courses are designed to expose each student in the Middle School to visual, performance, dance, and music courses. The purpose of these courses are to celebrate creativity. In 6th Grade, students are introduced to basic courses in art, drama and music which are required for all students. In 7th and 8th Grade, courses in the arts grow in comprehension and build on the foundational experience in 6th grade. Students are required to select at least one full year Creative Arts course or two semester long Creative Arts courses in each of their 7th and 8th Grade years.

ENRICHMENT COURSES Enrichment courses offer students the opportunity to explore areas of aptitude or areas of interest in a more focused, hands on, project-oriented approach. Each course has a distinct set of course outcomes that involve both content learning, skills learning and integration. These courses are graded Pass/Fail.

The Global Issues Network The Global Issues Network was begun by teachers and students from six international schools in Europe and was based upon High Noon: Twenty Global Problems, Twenty Years to Solve Them by Jean-François Rischard, former World Bank VicePresident for Europe. Rischard describes imminent issues that can only be solved through global cooperation. Among these are water shortages, global warming, environmental degradation, infectious diseases, poverty, illiteracy, depletion of fisheries, peacekeeping, and the loss of ecosystems. Our Global Issues Network courses are designed to fulfill the mission of the Global Issues Network: To empower young people to collaborate locally, regionally and globally in order to create sustainable solutions for global issues. This year we are pleased to be able to offer two Global Issues Network courses in our Enrichment Program: Environmental Issues and Human Rights Issues The objectives for learners are: • INFORM: provide resources for students to learn about global issues • INSPIRE: coordinate events that motivate students to act on global issues • EQUIP: train students with the necessary skills and tools to tackle global issues • ACT: encourage and facilitate collaborative and sustainable action on global issues Source: Global Issues Network: http://www.global-issues-network.org/page/about-gin

ENRICHMENT PROGRAM FOR THE 2013-2014: STEM & GLOBAL ISSUES NETWORK Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education has taken on great prominence in the past several years as educational and business interests have combined to heighten awareness and create opportunities for students to use the scientific method to discover and explore. Information and Technology Literacy in the Middle School Information and Technology Literacy (I&TL) expands the traditional definitions of literacy to include visual, textual, technological, and digital competencies. These skills are essential for students to thrive as engaged, ethical contributors in a constantly evolving and complex global society. Students will have the opportunity to pursue academic and personal growth through the use of information and technology resources. These authentic activities, which allow student choice and acknowledge learning styles, will require students to gather, analyze and synthesize information. Higher level thinking and problem-solving skills will be used to evaluate and produce media that can be shared or communicated in a creative manner using appropriate technologies. Conditions essential for the success of all stakeholders include timely and sustained access to current and appropriate technology and information resources, effective support systems, professional development and time devoted to collaborative planning. Both formative and summative assessments will be collaboratively designed to match ASD standards and benchmarks, and encourage self, peer, and teacher evaluation.

Technology Integration Facilitators in each division work closely with teachers to design technology and media-rich units and lessons that integrate the ISTE NETS Standards, essential information, and technology literacy skills into the core curriculum. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) classes are also offered for students who have an interest in further exploring these topics.

An important aspect of the NETS standards is a focus on Digital Citizenship. All parents and students are introduced to, and must sign, a Technology Responsible Use Policy (RUP) that outlines what constitutes acceptable, responsible, and safe use of technology. Expected study time per lesson: 30 minutes - 60 minutes The ability to read, write, and express oneself empowers individuals. In Language Arts courses, students will refine their skills in these areas, as well as challenge themselves to think critically. Using Columbia University’s Teachers College Writers Workshop approach, students will continue their exploration into what makes writing powerful. Students will study author’s craft, as well as develop their own craft through practicing various writing strategies. Students will encounter and create a variety of genres: creative non-fiction, literary essay, research writing, fiction writing, and poetry. Grammar and mechanics are taught in the context of this writing workshop approach. Understanding and interpreting literature is explored using the Readers Workshop approach through class novels, themed literature circles, and independent reading, as well as through various interdisciplinary units. Within these units, students become familiar with story elements including character, setting, plot, conflict, theme, and point of view. Independent reading is expected, encouraged, and valued in class. In addition to the life-skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening, students will enhance their 21st century skills as technology is constantly blended into the curriculum to enrich the learning.

Expected study time per lesson: 30 minutes Math 6 deepens and extends the skills from Grade 5 math, corresponding to the five key concepts from the Common Core State Standards for mathematics: Ratios and Proportional Relationships, The Number System, Expressions and Equations, Geometry, and Statistics and Probability. In class, students are presented with standard level and challenge level opportunities, both on homework and assessments. Performance in Math 6 determines placement into grade 7 courses. The Common Core Standards for Mathematics state that the student will: • Understand ratio concepts and use ratio reasoning to solve problems • Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division to divide fractions by fractions • Compute fluently with multi-digit numbers and find common factors and multiples • Apply and extend previous understandings of numbers to the system of rational numbers • Apply and extend previous understandings of arithmetic to algebraic expressions. • Reason about and solve one-variable equations and inequalities. • Represent and analyze quantitative relationships between dependent and independent variables. • Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, surface area, and volume. • Develop understanding of statistical variability. • Summarize and describe distributions.

INTEGRATED SCIENCE 6 Department: Science Length: Full Year Grade Level: Grade 6 Pre-Requisite: Successful completion of Grade 5 Science Expected study time per lesson: 15 minutes The Integrated Science 6 course provides an overview of life, earth and physical science concepts in the context of real world problems. The course emphasizes the use of problem-solving and content application to examine current issues in science. Hands-on labs will be a major focus.

WORLD HISTORY I Department: Social Studies Length: Full Year Grade Level: Grade 6 Pre-Requisite: Successful completion of Grade 5 Social Studies Expected study time per lesson: 15-30 minutes The sixth grade social studies program encompasses two different modules: the ancient world and medieval times to today. Geography is integrated throughout the curriculum in order to promote students’ understanding of the connection between people and the Earth especially how physical geography affected the growth of civilizations. The course of study focuses on selected empires within the ancient world, and ends with an investigation of Renaissance Europe. Both modules assist students in understanding today’s world and developing a global perspective by learning about the past. Students will learn how ancient civilizations laid the foundation for modern culture. Students will explore the rise and eventual fall of civilizations and the impact they have on life today. Becoming familiar with various research tools and presenting information in a variety of formats are emphasized. Finally, the curriculum aims to help students recognize contributions made to society by different cultural, religious and ethnic groups throughout time and how they are still relevant today.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND HEALTH 6 Department: Physical Education & Health Length: Full Year Grade Level: Grade 6 Pre-Requisite: None Expected study time per lesson: 15 - 30 minutes The aim of the Physical Education program is to enable individuals to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes to lead an active, healthy lifestyle. Physical activity is vital to all aspects of normal growth and development and the health benefits are widely recognized.

The P.E. curriculum is made of four strands: Health, Fitness, Sports and Aquatics. Students have to fully participate in all four components of the curriculum in order to complete the course. Each strand will be divided into smaller units: • Health: Wellness, Decision Making & Substance use and abuse, and Human Growth and Development. • Fitness: Fitness is integrated into the Aquatics, Sports and Health courses. Fitness will not have a standalone grade in Power School. • Sports: Volleyball, Soccer, Softball, Golf, Ultimate, Basketball, Tennis, Rugby, and Badminton. • Aquatics: Stroke Improvement (Front Crawl, Backstroke, Butterfly and Breaststroke) and Water Safety; Water Polo, Water Basket and Water Games. Students are required to wear a specific P.E. uniform to all fitness and sports classes. The kit consists of sports shoes (sneakers are best, so avoid the big, high top, unlaced skateboard shoes, sandals, ballerina, or flip flops), socks, red Falcon’s shorts and a grey Falcon’s shirt. For safety reasons, no jewelry is allowed during physical activity (including watches). For swimming, swimsuits (board shorts are acceptable) and swim caps are mandatory, goggles are highly recommended. Not having a P.E. uniform will affect the student’s Participation grade. However, the students will still be expected to participate in that class. Please note that the PE Department will not provide uniforms to middle school students. A lack of complete P.E. uniform will result in a deduction of 5% from the day’s participation grade.

MIDDLE SCHOOL SURVIVAL SKILLS Department: Interdisciplinary Length: 1 Quarter Grade Level: Grade 6 Pre-Requisite: None Expected study time per lesson: 0 - 30 minutes New schedules, many teachers, more expectations, different classes, how will you survive? This class will help you to cope with the new and exciting adventure of Middle School. Learn some strategies to give you success in your classes, such as the best way to manage your time between homework, activities, and your friends. You will be introduced to the skills and tools you will need to successfully use technology to support your learning. Areas of emphasis will include online safety and digital citizenship, development of information literacy skills, including word processing presentation, and multi-media skills that can be used in school projects. Taking this class will help you have success as you begin your journey through Middle School.

CREATIVE ARTS MIDDLE SCHOOL BOYS CHOIR Department: Creative Arts

Throughout the year, a variety of genres, styles and cultures of music will be demonstrated as well as a consistent opportunity to perform in a small and large group setting.

Length: Full Year Grade Level: Grades 6, 7, or 8 Prerequisite: None Expected study time per lesson: 0-30 minutes This is a new class being offered for boys in sixth, seventh, and eighth grade. Previous experience in choir is not required, just a love of singing. The Boys Choir is an opportunity for boys to feel confident and supported through their voice change experience, as well as to have fun while making music with their friends. In addition to performing as a group, they will sing in combination with girls groups at both concerts. Students will also practice their music-reading skills over the course of the year, becoming more competent musicians as a result. 7th and 8th grade participants in the Boys Choir are eligible and encouraged to audition for renowned, high-level regional and international festivals.

SIXTH GRADE GIRLS CHOIR

DRAMA 6 Department: Creative Arts Length: 1 Quarter Grade Level: Grade 6 Pre-Requisite: None The 6th Grade Drama Course is an introduction to theater as an art form. The course will focus on the fundamentals of acting and theater through a combination of theater games and improvisation, as well as short units in ensemble building, clowning, and American melodrama. Emphasis is placed on participation, creativity, and a willingness to explore. The ultimate objective of the course is for the students to gain confidence in themselves, discover the creativity in themselves and in others, and to show growth through discussion and personal reflection.

This performance-based ensemble gives girls who love to sing the opportunity to sing high-level and beautiful music from many different genres in a supportive and fun atmosphere. Girls will learn and develop the techniques, skills, and confidence needed to be a contributing member of a secondary choral ensemble. The girls will also have the opportunity to combine with other groups for the holiday and spring concerts. In Sixth Grade girls choir, students will cultivate a lifelong love of music, and build meaningful friendships with peers who share a common interest.

Sixth grade art is an interdisciplinary subject, which includes elements from student’s social studies curriculum. This interaction is accomplished while students further develop their knowledge of the elements of art and principles of design. This course cannot be repeated.

The purpose and intent of the 6th grade instrumental program is to comprehend an overall understanding of what it means to be a contributing member in a traditional Concert Band setting. History and theory of music will be supplemented throughout the year in the form of written quizzes in order to build musical vocabulary.

Expected study time per lesson: 15 - 30 minutes This course is the beginning of a three year program that builds upon students’ prior knowledge in Arabic language and culture. The program stresses language acquisition through the development of communicative skills. Speaking, listening, reading and writing using basic Modern Standard Arabic are all highlighted in this course. Grammar is introduced as needed to help understand the structure of the language. By the end of the sixth grade, students should be able to carry on basic conversations related to the topics covered. Students will practice writing short sentences about themselves or one of the topics covered. Students will learn vocabulary pertaining to the following topics: (Greetings/Introductions, Classroom/school subjects, My Family/Jobs, My House, Food/Eating healthy); conjugating verb ‘to have’ and regular verbs with all pronouns; feminine and masculine nouns; some prepositions, and numbers 1-100. Textbook + Workbook+ audio: Qisas wa Hiwaarat series.

Expected study time per lesson: 0 - 30 minutes If you love to read then you need to join the 6th Grade Bonkers For Books class. This class offers the opportunity to explore different genres of reading through small group book clubs and large group discussions. We will learn how to write good book reviews by looking at professional book critiques. We will share our books through logs, book talks, creative projects, and reviews within our own class. A list of recommended books will also be created. You may find a future as a book critic or as a Library Media Specialist. Come explore the exciting world of books.

Length: Full Year Grade Level: Grade 6 Pre-Requisite: Grade 5 ASD Modern Standard Arabic (student placement by assessment) Expected study time per lesson: 15 - 30 minutes This course is the beginning of a three year program that introduces students to Modern Standard Arabic language and culture. The students’ progression is considerably dependant on their knowledge of their own Arabic dialect and their exposure to Arabic language and culture at home. In order to analyze what makes a good film, we must first learn what makes a good story. We will examine how camera angles, lighting style, directing your actors, and how other techniques work together with the story to produce believable created reality. How do we critique existing films for style and content? How are films relevant to our lives? We will analyze film from a literary and historical perspective. This is a good class for students interested in computer programming, computers or problem solving.

In this class you will learn to draw a detailed map of the entire world. It may seem hard to believe, but after this course you will have a comprehensive knowledge of geography that allows you to map the world entirely from memory. You will create a memory map from a blank grid and accurately draw a detailed world map including latitude and longitude lines, political borders, mountain ranges, rivers, oceans and major cities of the world! Budding geologists this class is for you! You will learn how the tectonic plates have shifted to create the continents that we recognize today. The earth is constantly changing and this class will help you put all the pieces together.

The seventh grade social studies course is the beginning of a two-year survey of United States history through a world lens. The course connects the specifics of American history to world historical events and big ideas. Performing Arts I will continue to explore the fundamentals of acting and theater through 3 major units of study: Ensemble building, Masks in Theater, and Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Theater. The units of study are designed to help the student learn the importance of the ensemble in theater, learn how to develop characters and relationships on stage, and to learn the basics of theater production. Throughout the semester, students will create, stage, and perform original or scripted pieces of theater. The semester will culminate in a live performance for an Elementary School audience. The ultimate objective of the course is for the students to gain confidence in themselves, discover the creativity in themselves and in others, and to develop a lasting appreciation of theater. The Boys Choir is an opportunity for boys to feel confident and supported through their voice change experience, as well as to have fun while making music with their friends. In addition to performing as a group, they will sing in combination with girls groups at both concerts. Students will also practice their music-reading skills over the course of the year, becoming more competent musicians as a result. 7th and 8th grade participants in the Boys Choir are eligible and encouraged to audition for renowned, high-level regional and international festivals.

They will be assessed on their sculptures visual appeal, craftsmanship, their creative process, as well as through writing and verbal critiques. This course cannot be repeated.

Mixed Media is an advanced arts course designed to challenge the conventions of traditional visual art methods, materials, and techniques. You will have an opportunity to work with a combination of acrylic mediums, printing techniques, cut paper design, relief sculpture work, watercolor, ink, and collage. A basic knowledge of how to properly use a variety of materials is required, and only students who have successfully completed both MS Art 1 and MS Art 2 may take this course. MYTH BUSTERS Department: Enrichment Length: 1 Quarter Grade Level: Grade 7 or 8 Pre-Requisite: Completion of grade 6 math and science Expected study time per lesson: 0-30 minutes Myth Busters is a class that follows the format of the popular television series, where the scientists use science, technology, engineering and mathematics to investigate commonly held myths. Students work in groups to plan and produce quality video segments of their experiment, which, either confirms, busts or finds plausible the myth they are investigating. This course reinforces the same processes taught in the ASD middle school math and science classes.

They will be responsible for producing the ASD middle school yearbook. Two editors will be nominated to lead the publication but all students are responsible for collaborating their efforts. Contributing personal time outside of class is required in order to document extra curricular activities. Students will learn layout, editing, formatting and reporting skills while documenting the life and times of the Middle School.

You will learn to select the right book for you and how to get into the â&#x20AC;&#x153;reading zoneâ&#x20AC;?, where the characters are your friends and the pages turn themselves. Discussions, small presentations, book critiques and blogs will deepen your understanding of fiction and illuminate connections between the text, your life, and the world while improving your reading abilities. You will also take part in voting for Teen Read Week and the ALA mid-winter awards. Arranging question/answer sessions via goodreads.com and Skype sessions with authors are also included in the course. Furthermore, you will speak to other classes (booktalks) and inspire others to read through book posters. The careers of author, publisher, book critic and librarian will also be explored.

Using LEGO blocks, motors and sensors, students build robots that can complete a variety of challenges and obstacles. Students use a control console or computer to program their robots to move, react, and make sounds. This is a good class for students interested in programming, computers or problem solving. Skills learned in this class can be transferred to programming and engineering careers.

In this Video Broadcasting and Editing course you will learn the fundamentals of working in front of the camera, as well as what goes on behind the scenes. Specifically in class you will write scripts, develop announcing skills, prepare appropriate visual materials, and study broadcasting operations and management. It is expected that you participate in the broadcasting of ASD events that occur during and after school. Skills learned in this class can be transferred to career opportunities in advertising, film/TV production, journalism and public relations.

This course originally focused on climbing, aims at exploring the different outdoor activities in Dubai, on and off campus, in addition to the classic climbing classes. The goal of the course is to educate the students to become independent in an outdoor setting, explore leadership skills and problem solve in unfamiliar conditions. Challenge by choice is the guiding philosophy behind the program. The skills learned throughout the course will transfer easily to any activity or endeavor you choose to pursue in the future. Problem solving and leadership skills are a main part of any project we undertake and this course is an opportunity to challenge and test our skills in a different setting. Possible careers explored in this class are, Outdoor Recreation Leader, Outdoor Education Teacher, and even an Adventure Tour Guide.

INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY

Students will incorporate different techniques of digital photography into their picture taking as they practice photographic terminology. Assignments will consist of photographing and editing topics such as hands, patterns and shadows. This is a project-based course that will allow students to participate in class critiques and develop their presentation skills using Picasa and a final photography exhibition. Students are required to have a digital camera for this course. This course cannot be repeated.

Investing 101 is an elective that gives a realistic glimpse into the world of the stock market. It provides a historical overview of the stock market, explains how the market works, defines important terminology, and teaches essential math skills for “playing” the market. Students are given $100,000 to invest into a virtual stock market looking to make a profit. The winning team will earn the right to call themselves the “Oracles of ASD”. Students who take this course may discover a career interest in becoming a stockbroker or investment analyst!

SELECTION PROCESS

The Course Selection Process COURSE CHOICE PROCESS Students are introduced to the course registration process in grade level assemblies. Follow up instruction occurs within individual advisories and parents are also informed about course registration. Students have approximately one month to select courses and register in advisory classes. Student schedules are available to students in August before the school year begins. Students should consult with parents, advisors, teachers and counselors to make informed decisions about course requests. Students need to complete the appropriate course selection sheet and return it to their Advisory teacher with a parent signature. Students who do not have a completed course registration sheet will not be allowed to register for courses. SCHEDULE CHANGES Schedules are changed only when students were incorrectly placed in a required course (i.e. placed in Math 6 when they should be in Pre-Algebra). Unfulfilled Creative Arts or Enrichment requests will not be considered as a need for schedule changes. Students will have two weeks of the new school year to meet with a counselor and request a schedule change.
