Whittington to hold first Worm Charming Championship Whittington will host its first Worm Charming Championship during the annual Vintage Village Fete on August Bank Holiday Monday. “Whilst our aim is to keep the tradition of an old-fashioned village fete alive, we like to add something different,” said Ian Johnson, Chairman of the Village Fete committee. Admission is free and will take place in the grounds of Whittington Castle from 12 midday until 5pm. The Fete will be opened by the crowning of the Fete Queen by the High Sheriff of Shropshire, Charles Lillis. There will be plenty to see and do, including small fairground rides, bouncy castles, arena games, competitions and sports from local clubs. There will also be plenty of music, food and drink and a wide selection of stalls selling exciting products from local people. Many local charities will also be in attendance. This is the second Village Fete organised by the community group, Whittington Together. “Last year’s event was fantastic and the weather was on our side,” said Lydia Northall, event organiser, “we were overwhelmed by the support we had from the local people and visitors from far and wide. We learned a lot of lessons from last year and hopefully the visitors will see the improvements at this year’s event”. Claire Cherrie and Ian Johnson try out some worm charming

Radiographer Laura hailed a Health Hero Radiographer Laura Edwards has been hailed as a role model to colleagues – as she was presented with the latest Health Hero Award at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital. Laura was nominated by 16 of her colleagues for the monthly prize, and all of them commented on her tireless commitment and her outstanding patient care. Oswestry Cambrian Rotary has a new President The outgoing and founding Oswestry Cambrian Rotary President Mike Lade assisted by Vice President Cath Baldry handed over the mantel and Chain of Office to the incoming President Ian Slipper at a meeting in the Wynnstay Hotel. He met his now wife Rhian in 1974 while she was studying Pharmacy at Bath University where Ian gained a degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering and was Chairman of the Hertzian Electrical Society.
“She’s a great role model and her patient care is excellent. “Laura goes above and beyond in her role,” added Nicola. “She’s also a fantastic student mentor, and a real fountain of knowledge.” Laura said: “I really wasn’t expecting this, I didn’t even know I’d been nominated so I’m very touched. “Our patients come first, so to be praised for patient care is lovely. “I’d like to thank my colleagues for their nominations, I work with a lovely team of people, so I must give them a mention.” Mark Brandreth was delighted to be presenting the award to one of the Trust’s radiographers’ having previously awarded it to nurses, Healthcare Assistants, doctors and therapists, as well as non-clinical colleagues including a departmental receptionist, a Maintenance Assistant and a Catering Assistant. TG Group cements a deal with local college A family-owned Shropshire business has joined forces with a local college to boost the skills of future international athletes. Tudor Griffiths Group, which is based in Ellesmere, has joined forces with the shooting academy at nearby Ellesmere College to enable students to benefit from Olympic standard equipment and hone their competitive edge. The company is supporting the team to create a facility that will allow students to train in all Olympic clay target disciplines, including trap and double trap. Managing director Tudor Griffiths said: “Ellesmere College is known nationally for the quality of its shooting team and this support will help towards developing their clay target provision, which in turn will hopefully see it reach the same level as the rifle shooting. “But it’s not just about supporting a local school – it’s also about supporting the local community and those who are interested in target shooting will also be able to benefit from the sponsorship.” Ellesmere College has consistently finished in the top five teams at the Ashburton Shield, and took the national title in 2015. The academy has recently produced nine
international shooters, including two selected for England and a number for Wales at junior level. Shooting Coach Tom Ryland said: “We thank Tudor Griffiths Group for their investment and, along with the electronic targets purchased with the support of the parents’ society and the Enhance Ellesmere project, we can provide the school with probably one of the best facilities in the country. “Our facilities are already used by the local community through our links with Pentathlon GB, and our weekly modern pentathlon training attracts a number of children from the local area.” Tudor Griffiths with the Ellesmere College shooting academy

In the spotlight
Os Rocks! If you’ve heard the sound of Radiohead and Nirvana drifting out of Christ Church recently, you’ve probably stumbled across Oswestry’s newest choir, Os Rocks. The mixed group choir, which started in March this year has a repertoire of tunes you wouldn’t necessarily associate with more traditional choirs. Founding member Jan Ellis, 56, tells us what inspired her to set up the unique Os Rocks choir and how you can get involved. Jan, who moved to Oswestry from Huddersfield five years ago with her husband, works part time as an administrator at North Shropshire College and teaches piano to beginners. “I am a classically trained pianist to grade eight. I taught Yamaha keyboard lessons for several years at a secondary school in
The reason for its success is down to the emphasis being on fun Huddersfield. I used to play violin, flute and saxophone and learnt the EB bass for a while with a local brass band. “Whilst living in Huddersfield, I was in a fantastic mixed voice choir who sang music from many different genres - it was great fun. Since moving here I have been in three really good choirs, but none of them sang the kind of music I enjoy. Every February I go up to Huddersfield and my mum and I go to the local music festival ‘The Mrs
The Os Rocks choir
Sunderland Music Festival’ and we watch the choir competition on the final day. Every year I am inspired and every year I say, ‘I want to start a choir’. This year I did!” The reaction to Jan’s choir has been amazing – with 40 members of all ages joining up. The reason for its success is down to the emphasis being on fun says Jan. “We have some experienced singers and some novices - but everyone sings beautifully in tune. It’s brilliant after only a couple of months. Our youngest member is 19, although one lady’s 10-year-old daughter sometimes joins us. We have men and women but, like most choirs we need more men as they are currently vastly outnumbered. “We just want people who can sing in tune,” says Jan, “the ability to read music is helpful, though not necessary as we would put a non-reader with a reader. At the moment, I play the piano but really, I would love to sing, so it would be great if we could find a pianist to join us too. “Our choir is different to others because we are not learning ‘traditional’ choir songs like classical, musicals and secular. We
“My aim is to get everyone on a coach, up the M62 to Huddersfield, to compete in the festival where the inspiration came from” are concentrating on pop and rock from the 1960s to present day. We have only learned a few songs so far but I think the favourite is going to be a ‘mash up’ by talented choir member Gina Cox-Roberts, incorporating Train and James Blunt. We have just started learning this.” The future for Os Rocks looks bright, having already been asked to do three guest appearances over the summer. “My aim is to get everyone on a coach, up the M62 to Huddersfield, to compete in the festival where the inspiration came from,” adds Jan.
Rehearsals take place at 7.30pm on Tuesday evenings for around one hour at Christ Church (opposite the Library) in Oswestry. You can email Jan at osrockesadmin@btinternet. com and follow them on facebook @Osrockschoir.

Country charm
There’s a certain serenity and comfort that comes from classic country interiors. Celebrating quality materials, neutral colours and lots of texture - it’s like a big warm hug When picking out furniture, nothing says country charm like a white statement piece with a classic form and sweet details like cross panels, floral pattern, wicker inserts, metal handles, whitewash finish or beautifully curved legs. Pair with heavily textured materials like thick linens, wicker, rustic wood, rustic leather and some classic lighting and you have the country cottage of our dreams! A little can also go a long way - these pieces work beautifully when tied in with other design styles like industrial, coastal or minimalism for a calming, eclectic touch.

Kate Howell of Woodhead Oswestry Sales and Lettings on Leg Street, is our ‘secret agent,’ lifting the lid on the world of property August is traditionally the time when the property industry takes a breather, the schools are out, families go away on holiday and we brace ourselves for the autumn rush. This year will be no different. The team are full of excitement, enthusiasm and dedication for the season. I’ve just taken on my apprentice Kasey as a permanent member of staff to further strengthen our team, who have all completed their annual training, passing with flying colours. There’s an extra two members of the Woodhead team on the way, with the happy news that Kim, Principality manager is expecting twins. The weather is holding for the moment – a bit like the property market. We have just had some of the best sales and lettings results in years. In addition, our first traditional auction is set to take place on 10 August and is already bursting with interest. All this positivity is set against a national backdrop of Brexit, the tragedy of Grenfell Tower and the devastation of terrorist attacks. Though we are living in uncertain times, we must reflect and then continue to look towards the positive. I have taken on two new responsible building sites of 10 bungalows on the edge of Oswestry and 46 family homes in the Whittington catchment area, which are nearing the release or build stage. With low interest rates continuing to buoy the housing market, I expect growth to continue in our area.

Look the best you can! Jane Millington, owner and head practitioner at Body & Face Options clinic in Maesbury Marsh, tells us how she gets her clients to look good naked! Losing weight is a positive step towards gaining the ‘perfect’ body shape, but what happens after the weight loss? Most people are then left with hanging loose skin and relaxed muscle tone - this is because skin and muscle are used to having more volume which has now been reduced. My clients want to look as good naked as they do with their clothes on. That’s why I’ve developed an effective fourJane Millington step solution which can be M.S.B.T.H performed in half-hour time I.F.H.B.C I.H.B.C slots in the clinic. Step one: My Lipo is a nonsurgical liposuction that can be used to ‘melt’ stubborn fat cells that can’t be targeted through exercise. The treatment is painless and works using heated paddles that are used to ‘saponify’ fat.
In a liquid state, the fat is easier to drain from the body. The fat cells then collapse to give a smooth finish. The fat itself will be stored as energy in the adipose tissue, so we recommend a workout within 24 hours. Step two: The next step is an Endermologie treatment. This transports and drains the fat through the lymphatic system. It contours the body and is a vital part of a slimming program. I often have referrals from surgeons who have completed surgical liposuction on a patient who is left with areas of indentation. This smoothing treatment helps to eradicate those indentations. Step three: Pro Max lipo is non-invasive bipolar radio frequency treatment that tightens up loose skin and encourages collagen production. Step four: The final step is the Eurowave, which lifts and tightens muscle. This can be used to target all areas of the body and 18 minutes is equivalent to 369 sit-ups. Each client is given a personalised package to suit their needs. I want my clients to be able to go on holiday and feel confident because they look the best they can. All treatments are subject to an in-depth medical consultation.

Education
New Multi-Sport Scholarships Preparation Underway North Shropshire College (NSC) is launching two new multi-sport scholarships this September, the College will be offering a Women’s and Men’s Multisport Scholarship, both based at the Walford Campus with start dates in September 2017. The Women’s Scholarship will include a BTEC Level 3 sport qualification with multi-sport pathways; Rugby, Football and Netball. The programme will be supported by Worcester Valkyries, Wolves FC & Wolves Community Trust and England Netball. The Scholarship will also be championed by double Paralympic Gold Medal winner Danielle Brown, who is the official Ambassador of the Scholarship. The Men’s Scholarship will run similarly with the BTEC Sport qualification, and will feature pathways of Rugby and Football. This will also be supported by Wolves FC & Wolves Community Trust. Both Scholarships have Arla Foods UK supporting with their ‘Good To Grow’ initiative, which will provide valuable interview and business skills built into the qualification package.
‘We went to discuss the exciting enrichment programme which includes TV presenting opportunities, stadium tours, coaching qualifications and opportunities to take part in football camps.” Jo White, Business Development Manager at NSC has been building links with all partners as part of the preparation process for September. On Wednesday 7th June, the College went to Wolverhampton Wanderers to meet staff about the forthcoming scholarships. Jo White commented, ‘We went to discuss the exciting enrichment programme which includes TV presenting opportunities, stadium tours, coaching qualifications and opportunities to take part in football camps both at Wolves and at Walford Campus. This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone with a passion for sport.’ Laura Nicholls Senior Manager for Wolves Community Trust, the official charity of Wolves FC comments, ‘We are excited to be supporting North Shropshire College 44 | Oswestry life

with their new sport scholarship. We look forward to working alongside the college to add real value to the programme and offer the young people involved a unique education within this sector.’ Every student who starts the scholarship this September will receive a free sports training kit on their first day, along with the chance to take part in summer camps delivered by Worcester Warriors/Valkyries and Wolves FC. Basing the Scholarships at Walford enables the College to reach a broader range of students as the Campus offers residential accommodation and excellent facilities. Jo White goes on to say, ‘We are also looking to offer two fully funded accommodation places for the year, one for each of the scholarship programmes.’

Education
Festival of Education hailed a success The Marches School held its second national Festival of Education on 29 June. And what a day it was! From Professor Robert Winston and renowned film studio Aardman Animations to a baby T-Rex called Sophie and a live operating theatre, the entire school came alive with the sound of fun and learning. The festival brought together educators from all across the county to listen to talks from esteemed practitioners such as Christine Quinn (Regional Schools Commissioner for the West Midlands), Professor Mick Waters (former Director of Curriculum at QCA) and Andy Buck (who led a talk on ‘Leadership’, the key
However, the event was not solely for teachers. Students from across the area got to enjoy an entire day of activities, workshops and inspirational talks from the likes of Olympian Darren Campbell, who explained his motivational journey and the young Chef Luke Thomas who talked about his inspirational career. As well as careers advice and a whole host of motivational speakers, the festival offered students of all ages the opportunity to get involved in all kinds of enjoyable and educational workshops run by the Houses of Parliament, Chester Zoo and Frantic Assembly amongst many others. The event was a huge success all round, with speakers, delegates and students alike all bowled over by the scope of the event. The aim of the festival was to give both teachers and local students chances that might otherwise be unavailable to them, providing valuable professional development for the former, and vital information and experience for the latter.

Craft Ale rising Beer is an incredibly versatile drink, there really is a beer for every occasion. This summer everyone seems to be going crazy for hoppy and zesty India Pale Ales (IPA) and delicious British, continental and American lagers. Cwrw Ial Community Brewing Co (LLanarmon Yn Ial) – Kia Kaha! An absolute hop bomb of a pale ale, loaded with heavy hopping in the brew and also heavily dry hopped, this beer is crammed with New Zealand’s finest hop harvests. Sopresa Aleoli This August enjoy a taste of the Mediterranean by whipping up an authentic Iberian dish courtesy of The Shropshire Cook Book and AleOli. Owner and chef Frances O’Shea brings the authentic taste and vibe of Spain to her stall in Shrewsbury’s popular market hall; and serves up a fast, tasty tapas dish that’s easy to make but delicious to taste. “Having lived in Spain for over a decade and fallen in love with its food culture, celebrating both when I moved to Shrewsbury and opened AleOli in 2014 seemed natural. The name combines those of my two children, Alejandro and Olivia, while reflecting Iberian roots. Alioli is, after all, the region’s garlic mayonnaise. AleOli serves breakfast and lunch as well as coffee and cake, and offers a place to drop in to brush up on your Spanish. The tapas menu is also a great way to introduce different foods to children as it’s based around sharing dishes. “At AleOli we maintain our high quality and authenticity by locally
sourcing our produce, mainly from within the market, while the Spanish produce is supplied direct from a specialist supplier who I’ve known for years!” Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 8 minutes Serves 4
Ingredients 1 red onion, small 2 chorizo sausages (cooking version) (omit for a vegetarian version of this dish) 1 red pepper 4 mushrooms cups, closed 8 tbsp olive oil 4 eggs Tomato frito (these are available from AleOli or a Spanish food shop or supplier) Salt and pepper, to taste Manchego or cheddar cheese, grated, to taste 4 x tapas dishes (approx 15cm) Fresh or dried oregano, to taste Fresh artisan bread, for toasting
Method Preheat the oven to 190°c before dicing the onion, chorizo, pepper, and mushrooms. Mix together in a bowl ensuring that they are evenly blended and put to one side. Add 1 tablespoon of oil to each tapas dish before cracking 1 egg into each tapas dish. Once this is done, add 2 tablespoons of tomato frito to each dish and then add equal quantities of the onion, chorizo, pepper, and mushroom mixture to each dish. Season well with salt and pepper before grating over as much cheese as you like. Finally, take a pinch of oregano and sprinkle over each dish according to your preferred taste. Check that the oven is up to temperature and place the tapas dishes in the oven for 10 minutes (approx). While this is cooking, toast some fresh artisanal bread. Drizzle the bread with oil or serve plain, according to taste, and then serve immediately when the 10 minutes is up. Simple and delicious.
We’ve rounded up a list of our four favourite delicious Spanish dishes for you to try on your next visit to the Iberian country Gambas al ajillo (garlic prawns)
A widely popular tapas dish, this is especially popular in the south where there is an abundance of fresh seafood.
Arroz negro (black rice)
A Valencian dish using white rice, squid, seafood broth, olive oil, paprika, onion and squid ink which lends the dark colour of the dish.
Chorizo
On its own, in a sandwich, on a pizza – cured, smoked or fresh – you can’t beat the taste of delicious authentic Spanish chorizo.
Gazpacho
The cold soup tastes better than it sounds. Delicious and fresh gazpacho is made up of tomato, cucumber, onion, bread, olive oil, wine vinegar and garlic.

Food and drink
Add some fizz to your fruit this summer With summer officially here, keeping hydrated should be a top priority, yet 72% of Brits are still consuming less than the recommended daily amount of two litres of water. Instead, often turning to sugar and additive-laden shop-bought drinks. Healthy hydration doesn’t have to be boring, and we’ve teamed up with influential healthier eating expert, Lizzie King (Lizzie Loves Healthy Family Food), to create a range of delicious, healthy, hydrating cocktails and mocktails for the whole family this summer. By being sparkling waterbased, and mixed with fresh fruits, Lizzie’s recipes offer something for everyone, with hydration at the heart. like him can sustain a relationship with someone so famous... Will Matt and Abbey find a way to be together? Or will fame destroy their chance of happiness? Reminiscent of Notting Hill, Anything is Possible is a compelling love story of an ordinary man and a famous soap star. The story has been inspired, in part, by Osbourne’s previous jobs in banking.

A moment to be A dream is an escape in the humdrum of life. From the nine to five, to rotational shifts, and shopping, ironing and washing the floor. A dream can give your heart a lift. Like a good cup of tea, or freshly brewed coffee. A slice of rich chocolate cake, all gooey! So indulge yourself, at least once a day And let your dream whisk you away! ……

Rob Osborne’s Anything is Possible is not your average tale of boy meets girl, in fact, it’s completely the opposite. Matt leads an ordinary life, working at a bank in London with his best friend Bully. He whiles away the hours at his job fantasising about soap star Abbey Jones and can’t believe his luck when she arrives at his branch to make a cash withdrawal. However, during this once-in-a-lifetime moment, Matt makes a fool of himself and Abbey is somewhat abrupt. Following a stream of events and another chance encounter, Matt and Abbey begin to develop feelings for one another. Yet, after all of the years spent yearning for Abbey, Matt doesn’t feel that an ordinary man

DANCE LIVE MUSIC STALLS FOOD As its names imply, today’s Oswestry - or Croesoswallt - was formed from a combination of different cultures. It changed from being English to Welsh and back several times in the Middle Ages, it has both English and Welsh street and place names, and still boasts residents who speak both languages. It is Shropshire’s second largest town, and today is home to people of many different cultures, national origins. religions and first languages, who together represent a wide variety of different characteristics and lifestyles. These include Bulgarian, Polish and other eastern European people, Syrian and Kurdish people, Bangladeshi, Turkish, Chinese, German, Welsh and English people, people from the Travelling communities, Disabled people, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans people, people of different and no faiths and beliefs, and people of all ages. Early in 2016, the idea of an annual event to highlight and celebrate the different cultures in and around Oswestry was developed in recognition of this diverse background.
Oswestry CultureFest is being held for the first time on Saturday 19th August 2017 (10 – 3pm) and will run alongside the Shropshire Produce Market. CultureFest activities will be focused on Bailey Head, Bailey Street, Cross Street and at the Cross and Festival Square. Featuring a range of music and dance performances from different cultures, there will also be a host of information stalls run by local groups and organisations celebrating Oswestry’s vibrant and diverse communities. “With the recent increase in hate incidents across the UK against people seen as being ‘different’, this event celebrates our shared humanity, and is timely and important. It promises to be very lively, colourful and a lot of fun,” said FRESh Chairman Jonathan Hyams. Performances include Klezmer music by the Klezmonauts, Bhangra dance by Nachda Sansaar, the Oswestry Street Band, Bulgarian music and dance, Kurdish music and dance, Syrian beat box, local choirs and wild singers, Café Lola and other pop-up performances of poetry and readings.
Other attractions include free ‘tasters’ of delicious food from different cultures, and the chance to take part in Tai Chi sessions. Oswestry Library is highlighting Oswestry’s strong literary culture with celebrated and award-winning local authors performing readings in the library foyer between 11 – 3pm. The event is being organised by Fairness, Respect, Equality Shropshire (FRESh) Ltd, the Hermon Chapel Centre, the Jools Payne Partnership, Oswestry Equality Group, Oswestry Town Council, Oswestry Welcomes Refugees, and Shropshire Council’s Community Enablement Team. We are grateful for financial support from FRESh, the Jools Payne Partnership, Oswestry Town Council, Refugee Action, Shropshire Community Safety Partnership and STAR Housing, as well as donations from groups and organisations running information stalls.

“We drink to one another’s health and spoil our own” Jerome K Jerome August is a thirsty month and I will certainly be enjoying a nice glass of wine or beer on these summer evenings. But one glass easily becomes two and after three you sort of lose count! We’re all told not to drink more than 14 units of alcohol per week. More than that risks one or more of the 60 diseases associated with alcohol intake. There are more than a third of a million admissions to hospital each year attributed directly to alcohol and estimates say the effects of alcohol cost us all more than 20 billion pounds per year. If alcohol was invented today it would be banned!
So, what is 14 units?
If you think you might have a problem the Shropshire Recovery Partnership is an NHS organisation that can help and runs a service in Oswestry. They can be contacted on 01743 294700. Your local GP Practice can also suggest ways forward. Ultimately they all involve reducing your alcohol intake.
How much do you drink?
So, unlike the man who knew vodka could cause problems but thought he’d give it a shot anyway, perhaps we should all pause and think before our next drink.
Half a pint of beer or a pub measure of spirits is one unit. A small glass of wine is 1.5 units making a bottle of wine nine units. Doctors use various techniques to screen for alcohol use. One of these is called the CAGE questionnaire:

Has anyone Criticised your drinking? Do questions about your drinking Annoy you? Do you feel Guilty about your drinking? Do you ever have an Eye-opener? (ie a drink in the morning). If you answer yes to more than one of these you may have a problem. Other tools include the FAST questionnaire or the AUDIT-C questionnaire – both available online.

Am I legally entitled to keep the ring if I’ve broken off my engagement?
with
Stevens Lucas

Q:
My boyfriend proposed to me when we were on holiday in January and I accepted. After we got home I left my job 120 miles away to move in with him, but within a few weeks I realised I had made a terrible mistake as he became controlling and jealous. His behaviour got worse and worse until my life became unbearable. I literally had to plan my escape and in May I moved out and have been staying with a friend ever since. I have no job and no money and now he is demanding that I return my engagement ring. My friend says I should keep it as it was a gift and then I can sell it and use the money to get back on my feet. Am I entitled to do this?
A: In the majority of cases an engagement ring is usually
returned on a point of etiquette if it is the recipient who breaks off the engagement. However the law presumes it to be a gift and therefore it is assumed that the recipient will keep it. Your ex-fiancé could try and refute this by attempting to prove that he gave you the ring conditionally, with the expectation that a marriage would follow, and that if you did not fulfil that condition you should return the ring. Unless he has evidence such as a signed agreement to that effect, you are still under no legal obligation to return the ring. There is one thing that you might want to check before deciding to keep the ring though – whether your ex might have purchased the ring on finance with the jeweller, or perhaps paid for it on his credit card and still owe money on it. If this is the case then there could be other implications and it may be worthwhile seeking legal advice.

Q&A
with Anna Breeze of Prudent Financial Planning
Q: I am considering purchasing a buy-to-let property. Have you got any tips for me? A: Buy to let has come under the cosh recently from a tax crackdown, but many still see property as an attractive investment
TOP FIVE TIPS
1 2
Choose a promising area to invest in property. Promising does not mean most expensive or cheapest. Promising means a location people would like to live. Do the maths on buy to let. Before you think about viewing properties sit down with a pen and paper and write down the cost of houses you are looking at and the rent you are likely to get. Don’t forget to factor in maintenance costs and what will happen if the property sits empty for a month or two. Consider how hands on you want to be. Buying a property is only the first step. Will you rent it out yourself or get an agent
to do so. Agents will charge you a management fee but will deal with any problems and have a good network of plumbers, electricians and other workers if things go wrong.
3
Shop around and get the best buy-to-let mortgage on the market. You need independent mortgage advice. This means your adviser can search hundreds of lenders all from one place. If you go direct to a bank or building society you are greatly narrowing your options. Come and speak to us at Prudent and potentially greatly reduce your mortgage costs.
4 5
Think about your target tenant. Instead of imagining you would want to live in your investment property, put yourself in the shoes of the tenant.
Haggle over price when investing in a property. As a buy-to-let investor you have the same advantages as a first-time buyer when it comes to gaining a discount. Make offers and do not get talked into overpaying.

Nostalgia
Oswestry Smithfield;
the heart of the town Historian David Owen examines the history of the Smithfield Market. Oswestry has seen many changes over the last 50 years; the closure and demolition of the Cross Market, the withdrawal of the railway service, the loss of Park Hall Camp and the amalgamation of the four senior schools into The Marches amongst them.
been. The days when queues formed outside the town’s fish and chip shops, when ladies waited patiently for a table to come free in Littlewood’s cafeteria and when the pubs in the town centre - many of which have long since disappeared such as the Barley Mow - did more business on a Wednesday than they would do in the rest of the week combined, were gone forever.
However, probably the most noticeable (and damaging) change was the closure of the Smithfield Market which, for 120 years from 1849 to 1969, dominated the centre of the town. Held every Wednesday, the Smithfield market had become an ‘inconvenience’ to the local authority since the 1940s when the cattle wagons, Land Rovers with trailers and tractors made the town centre gridlocked. Plans to move the livestock market out of the town centre had existed for many years and the devastating outbreak of foot-andmouth disease in 1967 caused those plans to be accelerated. In earlier times, when farmers had driven their stock to market through the streets, with well trained dogs keeping the sheep and cattle in control, it was sustainable (if somewhat exciting when a ‘rogue’ cow or bull broke away from the group and careered through the town centre) and very much a local affair in terms of sellers. Buyers would come from across the country and the animals would be shipped to pastures new by the rail with livestock pens and loading bays dominating the area where Sainsbury’s now stands. The development and improvement in commercial vehicles and the road network saw this situation change from the 1920s onwards and the town centre site could not cope with this level of traffic, despite several traffic schemes being introduced
over the years to try and alleviate the congestion. From a practical point of view, it was an obvious move to relocate the market out of town. I don’t believe that it is controversial to say that when the Smithfield closed the heart was torn out of the town centre. Whilst the shops and the Bailey Head market were still busier on a Wednesday that any other day of the week, it never approached the levels it had once
Often progress can be a good thing, and the decisions for doing it were made with the best of intentions, but the closure of Oswestry Smithfield combined, of course, with other factors, marked the beginning of the end of Oswestry as a thriving and vibrant shopping centre. Fifty years on, the town boasts many specialist and interesting shops but the sheer volume of business that it once had during the heyday of the 1950s and 60s (along with the smells, bustle and vibrancy that the market brought) will never be seen again.

Rambles with a camera
Walker, photographer and artist Graham ‘Grum’ Mitchell focuses on some of the region’s hidden gems on a walk around his beloved hometown of Oswestry and its borderlands. This month he’s in Llanymynech
Rock Garden This month we follow the “Monty” southwards, beyond the navigable stretch, to one of my favourite places, Llanymynech Rocks. The cliff faces can be clearly seen from the A483. It is part of a carboniferous limestone outcrop that stretches from Anglesey and the Great Orme at Llandudno. Mining on a small scale has gone on here for over 2000 years. Copper, lead and limestone have all been mined. The largest mine belonged to Thomas Savin who owned the Porthywaen Lime Company. The limestone was burned to make fertiliser, or used for construction. The quarries fell out of use after WW1 and the area became a nature reserve in 1972. The reserve straddles the English/Welsh border. There are still plenty of pieces of industrial architecture around, some restored, some hidden in undergrowth. You can still see the tunnel that linked the Welsh and English quarries and remnants of the old inclined plane. There are some steep climbs and sheer drops, so children need to be supervised, and a small flock of Hebridean sheep means dogs need 56 | Oswestry life
to be under control. There are plenty of maps displayed. Parking is easiest in the visitor car park by the canal at Llanymynech, but expect a good climb. Throughout the summer there are superb displays of orchids: early purple, spotted, pyramidal and bee. Wild strawberries cover some of the cleared banks, which are also home to lizards. You’ll definitely see and hear the crows high up on the cliffs, and maybe spot buzzards or peregrine. Look out for butterflies. Meadow brown, gatekeeper, speckled wood, dingy skipper, small heath, peacock, orange tip, comma, and the beautiful common blue can all be seen here. The burnet flies during the day, but is actually a moth. If you are really lucky you may see a silver washed fritillary. The area is ideal for them as in spring there are many violets which are the food plant of the caterpillars. With occasional pools, and the canal below, you may also see a number of dragonflies. The highlight of any visit must be the view. From the toposcope (the viewing point) on the Welsh side you can see across to the Wrekin, and have tremendous views of the Breidden Hills above the Severn/Vyrnwy confluence.

Sponsorship deal renewed
St. Martins FC are delighted to announce a renewed sponsorship deal with Ridgway Rentals for the third year running. General manager Craig Rogers said: “We are looking to give the club a more organised and professional look but at the same time, keep our village roots. Our partnership with Ridgway gives us that opportunity and we are delighted that Tim, Stuart and the rest of Ridgway continue to offer their support. “This year we are making our FA Vase debut where we have been drawn against Ashby Ivenhoe FC of the East Midland Counties League, we are back in the Ethelston Cup and we hope to have a strong league campaign, given the second half of the season we had under Dan Stevens. Things are really progressing well on and off the pitch.”

At senior level Michael Doyle dominated the 100m breaststroke race pocketing a gold medal and a time of 1:12:52. In the 200m individual medley Michael finished with a three second personal best time and a silver medal losing only to a swimmer ranked third in the country. Joseph Law claimed bronze in the 100m freestyle race and a four second personal best. You will need:
Paper (I love rolls of brown parcel paper, or wallpaper lining paper but any is fine) Felt tips/crayons Stickers, feathers, glitter - anything you’d like to use as decoration Glue
Method
Like most kids, our little one LOVES drawing, but often just ‘colouring in’ doesn’t provide enough of a challenge and boredom sets in. I love doing this as I can start her off with basic shapes and then her creativity takes over - plus it can be done pretty much anywhere so it’s great for rainy days on holiday too. Just cover your paper with an eclectic mix of shapes for your little one to turn into people, monsters or whatever! Add a good selection of stickers and decorations for your child to add to and embellish their creations. It’s great for younger children learning their ‘shapes’ and for older children refining their finer motor skills through drawing. Baby Bird Café CIC has craft days every Sunday 9.30-11am 23 Cross St, Oswestry, SY11 2NF.

Win five pairs of tickets to The Midland Game Fair
The Midland Game Fair is the UK’s premier shooting event, and has been the event of choice for country sports enthusiasts and families looking for that special day out for over a decade. Held over 16th and 17th September at Weston Park in Shropshire, the Midland Game Fair has become the annual meeting place for the shooting community as well as families wanted to experience the best the countryside has to offer. Set within the stunning grounds of Weston Park in Shropshire, the vast parkland offers truly amazing grounds in which to host a countryside event of this magnitude. Steeped in history and offering breath-taking scenery, visitors will be truly spoilt as they surround themselves by some of Britain’s most beautiful countryside, allowing them to get involved in all the action as well as soak up the celebratory atmosphere of the last event of the season.
Each tagger sends a flash when shooting to simulate a gun firing and has realistic sounds to bring the experience to life. There are no bulky vests to wear and the gun has 360-degree vulnerability.
The tagger display shows all mission critical information at a glance. This includes - lives remaining, ammunition in current magazine, reloads remaining, mission status, fire mode and mission timer. We’ve teamed up with Black Hawk Laser to offer one lucky winner the chance to take five of their friends for a one-hour laser combat session worth nearly £60. To be in with a chance of winning, answer this question: Where is Black Hawk Laser based?
To win a pair of tickets to this year’s Fair, send your answer to this question: On what dates is the Fair held?

LAST WORD School’s out School is well and truly finished for the academic year, that means over six weeks to fit in lots of fun! There’s no shortage of places to visit and things to do in and around Oswestry. Trying to keep the children entertained at one venue can be a big task, especially if there is an age gap. Accept the challenge. Tell them to put down their iPads and drag them for a day out to one of the many familyfriendly visitor attractions in the area. My personal favourite is Park Hall Farm, not only is it really convenient to get to from Oswestry, there’s plenty of free parking and activities for all ages. Admission costs £33.95 for a family of four. Even if, like mine, your children aren’t particularly interested in the animals, there’s still plenty to keep you busy for a whole or half day. My five-year-old son especially likes the outdoor play areas and electric vehicles, while my two-year-old loves the indoor sensory play area and the barrel train rides. I know lots of families have an annual pass here which costs £136 and means you can visit as often as you like. Visit www.parkhallfarm.co.uk to find out more. Next on my list will be Nesscliffe Hill Country Park, suitable for ages 4-18. A patch of heath and woodlands the same size as 140 football pitches is open free of charge for 66

The kids can build dens while you enjoy the views of Shropshire across the blooming purple heather in peace and solitude. blooming purple heather in peace and solitude. The area is home to an iron age hillfort and a sandstone cave said to be the hideout of medieval outlaw Humphrey Kynaston. Oswestry Town Museum is a mustsee for any Oswestrian young or old. Located in the heart of the town on the Bailey Head, it tells the story of the town whilst providing a hub for information on other local heritage sites. Explore the timeline which maps the formation of the rocks to the present day. View the displays on subjects from geology to football and visit the children’s activity room which provides activities like colouring, quizzes and a collection of ‘hands-on’ objects to explore and draw. If you visit on a Wednesday, Friday or Saturday you can combine your trip with a walk around the variety of market stalls outside. Or, on the last Friday of every month an artisan market. Visit www.oswestrytownmuseum.co.uk
and www.oswestrymarket.co.uk to find out more. If the weather is terrible, how about a trip to one of Oswestry’s two dedicated soft play areas? The Fantastic Funhouse, located on Gobowen road is situated in a beautiful grade two listed building, formerly the Cambrian Rail Works and is suitable for ages 0-12. Across the other side of town is Knights Warehouse on Oswestry Trade Park. Also suitable for ages 0-12. The play area has a medieval theme with bright and colourful features including castle turrets and a pirate ship. Visit www.fantasticfunhouse.co.uk and www.knightswarehouseoswestry. myfreesites.net for more. If you have older children who like fighting with each other, control the mayhem with an organised shootoff at Black Hawk laser tag at The Venue at Park Hall, suitable from age nine. The underground military base features stands, towers, hideouts, bridges and bunkers. The laser tag guns have realistic sound effects so your children can fight it out with harmless infra-red-light guns to their hearts content while you enjoy a coffee and the free wifi at The Venue eatery. Visit www. blackhawklaser.co.uk for full details.
