Salon raises over £1500 for charity

A kind-hearted beauty salon owner and her team have raised over £1500 for Lingen Davies Cancer fund after being touched by friends and family fighting the disease. Katie O’Hara, owner of Butterfly Beautique on Old Chapel Court organised a charity ‘wax-a-thon’ at the Townhouse which saw local businessmen Tom Jones from Liar Liar, Ben Knowles from the British Ironwork Centre, Ollie Jackson from the Townhouse, Nic Davies from Nicholas Llewelyn barbers and Jimmy Hayns from Evolution gym brave the pain to raise money. Keen to put herself through a physical challenge, Katie and colleague Abbie Williams took part in a tandem skydive. Katie comments: “We’d like to say a massive thank you to all our clients and other businesses in the town who have supported our mission. Rosemarie Sellers, programme leader for community education commented: “On recent enrolment evenings we held in college, it was heart-warming to hear the reasons why learners were enrolling. Many were wishing to help family members who are profoundly deaf or who are becoming deaf. I myself intend to gain this skill so that I can communicate with my tutor who is deaf.” Classes begin on 24 September 6pm to 9pm for beginners and Tuesday evening 6pm to 9pm for intermediate level. New store opening A new clothes shop has opened its doors on Beatrice Street. The Blue Hanger Clothing Co. is run by business partners Amy Cullen and Louise Ridgers. The pair have many years of retail experience between them after running a successful clothes stall at the town’s market. “We’ll be providing good quality used and new clothing side-byside, catering for men, women and teenagers in the new store. Championship medal winners

Students from Oswestry Tae Kwon Do competed at the North Midlands Area Championships in Derby Arena, coming home with five medals. The competition featured over 400 participants from across the midlands and north west.

Rory Tinsley secured gold in the boys strike pad power test, Dan Valentine got bronze in the men’s blue belt patterns and men’s heavy weight blue belt sparring and Lily Ryder won gold in the girls’ green belt tag team sparring and bronze in the girl’s green belt sparring. Also taking part were Matt Hanks and Rebecca Manford. The martial arts group led by fifth black belt instructor Carl Rudolf meets every Tuesday and Friday at The Marches School. ‘Life-saving’ nurse named Health Hero A ‘life-saving’ staff nurse at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital has been named the latest Health Hero.

Mel McMahon, who works on Powys Ward at the Oswestry-based hospital, won the award after receiving 12 nominations from her colleagues who described her as ‘passionate, professional and caring’. Her nominations came from Powys Ward Manager Deb Povall, Sister Heather Owen, Acute Pain Sister Nicki Williams, Ward Clerk Angela Roberts, Student Nurse Charlotte Rigg, Staff Nurses Sarah Holgate and Ellie Smith, and Healthcare Assistants Jeremy Chavez, Jen Richardson, Hazel Arnold, Ruth Llewellyn and Julie Beardmore. Deb Povall, a ward manager who nominated Mel, said: “Mel provides leadership beyond her years; this was demonstrated in a recent emergency when she stayed calm and led the team which saved a life. Every manager would be lucky to have a Mel.” Healthcare assistant Ruth Llewellyn said: “She is a brilliant staff nurse who is always happy and smiley. I always enjoy and look forward to working with her.” The award was presented to Mel by Chief Executive Mark Brandreth. Mel said: “I’m completely in shock. I work with an amazing team and I couldn’t ask for better colleagues. “I want to thank them all for the nominations and the lovely things they said about me.” Mark said: “It’s clear by her colleagues’ words that Mel is a highly-valued member of staff and her devotion to her patients is an inspiration to everyone. “For 12 of her colleagues to take time out of their busy working day to nominate her really speaks volumes, she is a very worthy winner and we are fortunate to have her as part of our team.”

Oswestry Makes 2018 – dates for your diary

Oswestry Makes festival will be running throughout October, celebrating the many opportunities there are in and around the town to learn new ‘making skills’, buy locally made art and showcase the amazing talent that exists locally. This year’s theme will be Flowers of Peace and Remembrance and organisers are encouraging anyone that wants to be involved to make flowers to help decorate the town from mid-October. There will be two free fabric flower workshops on 29 September and 6 October from 10am to 12 midday at Lewis & Holmes on Castle Street. On 13 October, there will be a flower craft session at Oswestry Library from 11am to 3pm which is free to attend and open to all ages. Choral workshop

Cantiones Chamber Choir are inviting local singers to come along and join them for a choral workshop ‘Antonin Dvorak: Mass in D’ on 6 October between 9.30am and 5pm. The event will be held at Christ Church on Arthur Street. Directed by Gerry Howe and with musical accompaniment from Christopher Symons, the cost is £12 to include music hire and refreshments. International appearance for young footballers

Crafty Knitters donation to care home Oswestry knitting group, The Crafty Knitters recently presented a selection of handmade ‘twiddle muffs’ to the New Fairholme at the Senior Citizens Hall. The cosy gifts are for the dementia patients at the town’s care home.

Three Oswestry School footballers have made a name for themselves internationally after taking part in some of the world’s biggest footballing competitions. Ben Clark travelled to Macedonia to play KF Shkëndija in the ﬁrst qualifying round of Champions League for Welsh team The New Saints. Ben then travelled to Gibraltar to play Lincoln Red Imps in the Europa League, where the team secured a win, and then played FC Midtjylland of Denmark, who are currently second in the Danish league. A 5-1 loss saw the end of the TNS European adventure but gave Ben the opportunity to travel the length and breadth of Europe. Meanwhile Year 11 pupils Chun and Yat Wong, twin brothers, played for Hong Kong U16’s against Manchester United in the JC Youth

Football Academy Summit in Hong Kong. The brothers have played for the Hong Kong team age groups since they were 14 having been scouted playing for their home club. Chun and Yat hope to either sign for a professional team or enrol on a football scholarship programme in the USA upon completion of their A levels.

Ellesmere author set for book ‘double’ Not content with writing and publishing just one book this year, sport-mad father-of-two Richard Carpenter is going for the ‘double’. The 41-year-old from Tetchill in Ellesmere, released his debut book ‘Sportonova - The Games Begin’ on Amazon in June and already it has become a firm favourite with many children and parents alike. The story is set in outer space in a galaxy full of sports-ball shaped planets and Sportonova is the planet which shines the brightest. The plot follows the adventures of its inhabitants who gather in the fictional village of Clapuwood to create the ultimate sports tournament.

“It was very exciting to bring the games and book to life especially Prontoball. This is our favourite and I play regularly with Joshua and Thomas in the garden. It was fabulous to see other people having so much fun playing it too.” By showcasing some of the new sports it’s hoped others will be inspired to play the games more regularly and eventually Richard hopes to create a sports league in Shropshire involving the games featured in the book. He said: “Not everyone is into football, cricket or rugby so these games offer something a little bit different. It would be great to have a Sportonova league for all ages to encourage children and their parents to lead more active lives.” Published with the support of Team Author UK, ‘Sportonova - Let the Games Begin’, is just the beginning of Richard’s journey as a new children’s author.

He said: “I’m just on a roll. At the moment when I sit down to write, the words just flow so I’m getting on with it before I lose momentum. “I’ve always enjoyed writing but never really thought it would be possible to publish my own book let alone two in the same year. “I still have some way to go but I’m confident it will be ready for publication by December.” Richard’s second book ‘Sportonova - Winter Games’ will be set in Clapuwood and the nearby mountain village of Skilake. This time the teams compete in a winter tournament playing games such as ice hockey. Prontoball also makes a return to the plot and Richard says there will be some more brand new games for readers to look forward to including a game suggested by Thomas which mixes moguls and dodgeball. In fact, the busy dad, who works in IT by day, is already busy working on a sequel to Sportonova and is planning for its release later this year.

Inspired to write by his two sons Joshua (6) and Thomas (9), Richard recently brought the fictional games to life when he created his very own Sportonova tournament at St Mary’s Primary School summer fair in Overton. The event was held to officially launch the book and involved Richard showcasing several of the fun and unusual sports which feature in the book. My team are responsible for dealing with incoming phone and email enquiries which can be very varied, so no day is the same.

What is ‘The Conservatory’?

The Conservatory is quite unique within the Nuffield Health group. It’s a part of our office and gives all patients a space to relax after their consultation and we can talk to them and help with the process of booking their surgery.

What’s the best part of your job?

for booking the patients in face to face and the other for enquiries. However, we just work together and help each other. There is a steady flow of patients and phone calls all day, so the time does pass quickly. One of us will leave at 5pm and the other will then stay on until the clinics have finished which is normally between 7.308pm. We really don’t know what the day will bring and how busy it will be which makes the job challenging and interesting.

Why do you think people come to Nuffield Health for treatment?

I really love meeting the patients face to face, all the different characters. I like that we can meet the patient in the beginning and then follow their pathway and even visit them during their stay at Nuffield Health Shrewsbury Hospital. And it’s lovely when they come back for their follow up appointments and thank us. I also like the fact that we can offer surgery to NHS patients that have been waiting a long time. Especially the elderly patients that are waiting for cataract surgery as the surgery will improve their day to day life immensely.

What are the most common enquiries you deal with on a day to day basis?

Does Nuffield Health offer finance for treatments?

We get a lot of enquiries asking how a patient can come to Nuffield Health. We advise on the referral process and give as much information as possible. Patients are also very keen on prices as they need to know before they attend clinic all the possible charges. Some of the most common enquiries are for hip/knee replacements and cataracts.

What does a typical work day look like for you

The first job of the day is to check our internal post box for booking forms that may have been left by a consultant in our absence. We check for any enquiries/ answerphone messages that may have come in overnight. We run reports for the consultants to show current bookings, so we can see where we to book patients into theatre. Normally there are two of us in the office as we have two desks/phones. One desk is predominantly used 10 | Oswestry life

Have you ever been a patient yourself at Nuffield Health Shrewsbury Hospital? What was your own experience like? Yes, I had an elbow operation nearly three years ago. It was a lovely experience to see the hospital from a different side.

We work closely with a medical loan company that offers interest free loans over six or 10 months.

What are waiting times like at the moment to see GPs and consultants?

A patient can normally get an appointment within a week as long as they have a referral from their GP. Our private GPs work on a rota basis and we try and have one GP clinic a day.

How many consultants and GPs do you currently have working with you? We have 150 consultants and six GPs.

Origin by Dan Brown As I have enjoyed previous Dan Brown books, with their fast pace and code breaking mystery, I thought I would try Origin. With Robert Langdon once again at the heart of the book I anticipated a journey of symbolism and a complex quest, however, this is not what the book is about.

I didn’t find this book as fast paced as previous Dan Brown thrillers, and I did expect more symbolism. The code breaking is much more subtle and the scientific description is much more to the fore. Perhaps think Darwin meets Professor Stephen Hawking.

Stage is set for new £1.4 million theatre A new £1.4million theatre at Moreton Hall promises to be a new heart for the creative community of Oswestry. The Holroyd Community Theatre will provide a state-of-the-art performance space with a 240seat auditorium designed to accommodate the very best that the performing arts can provide. Over £1.2 million has already been spent as construction is well under way at the independent girls’ school. Named after its patrons, Bill and Julie Holroyd, investments in the best lighting and sound equipment, flooring and seats, as well as bespoke architectural design are being made so that audiences can benefit from some the greatest theatrical performances touring the country. A substantially sized foyer area with a bar, café and seating area has been included in the plans for smaller and more abstract performances. Alongside professional touring theatre companies and music ensembles, the theatre will be used by local community and charity

groups, arts organisations, choirs, orchestras and the surrounding primary and secondary schools. The theatre will be a hub for young talent to grow and its benefits are already in force with many community initiatives taking shape. The Face2Face Performance Academy offers expert tuition in singing, dancing and acting for all aspiring performers between the ages of nine and 18. It provides superb opportunities to showcase skills learnt through performances such as Elf The Musical at Shrewsbury’s Theatre Severn. The Academy regularly welcomes workshops from current industry professionals such as Kane Oliver Parry, who is currently on tour with Beautiful: the Carole King Musical and CiCi Howells, professional choreographer and actor. The Academy runs over three 10 week terms and holds workshops throughout the Easter and Summer

North Shropshire Music is a hub for musical excellence in the region and has opened musicianship opportunities for local students of all ages and abilities with sessions within term time. In search of ‘Berried’ treasure Berry-bearing trees and shrubs come into their own in autumn, creating colourful displays that can last well into winter. From elder berries to rose hips, crab apples to ﬁrethorns, the addition of berrying plants adds to a new dimension to any garden, with plants carry fruits and berries through autumn and into winter. Berrying plants also provide home grown food for hungry birds and wildlife too, enhancing their appeal and value to any garden. Evergreen shrubs provide structure and form to the garden throughout the year, but many produce early displays of ﬂowers followed by autumn berries. Once of the best compact shrubs for borders or patio pots is a Skimmia with a mouthful of a name, Skimmia japonica subsp. reevesiana. Don’t let this put you off as its displays of bright red berries are second to none! Also check out the compact and spreading Viburnum davidii, a hardy shrub with distinctly veined evergreen foliage that produces the most unusual metallic-looking blue-black berries. It really is quite a talking point. To create seasonal pots for autumn colour include a small Gaultheria mucronata carrying brilliant berries in

WREXHAM GLYNDWR UNIVERSITY october OPEN DAY Wrexham Glyndwr University is holding an Open Day on October 13. The day is designed to give prospective 2019 entry students a taste of what it’s like to study at the University and a chance to learn much more about the wide variety of degree programmes available, what the campus has to offer as well as being able to meet with course staff and current students. The university has a wide range of courses available at foundation, undergraduate and post graduate level, many of which can also be studied part-time. More than half of current Wrexham Glyndwr students study part-time and includes a widevariety of age groups. Ebony Banks is a Hospitality, Tourism & Events Management student about to enter her final year at Wrexham Glyndwr after joining at Foundation level. She said: “I came to an open day to find out more after reading about the course I was interested in online. I fell in love with the university. “The lecturers are an amazing support and my course is really good because you also get to do the practical elements such as going to the venues you’ve chosen to use. “I’ve become a much more confident person since joining Wrexham Glyndwr; there’s such a diverse range of people here that it was really easy to make lots of new friends and my grades have improved too.” A number of talks are taking 40 | Oswestry life

A student on Wrexham Glyndwr’s BA (Hons) Illustration, Graphic Novels and Children’s Publishing course, Ben Edwards said: “It has been fantastic coming to Wrexham Glyndŵr. I wasn’t always an illustrator – I used to work full time. When I left school, I didn’t think I was good enough to do art. I worked in customer service jobs, cleaning jobs and things like that – I was happy enough, but I felt like something was missing.

The careers team recently won the AGCAS (Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Service) ‘Supporting Student/ Graduate Employability’ award for their ‘Make Summer Work For You’ extracurricular programme, which strengthens students’ employment prospects over several months by providing flexible careers related support and guidance.

“Then, I started doing my own children’s book for fun, and that picked up a little bit of interest so I looked into doing more. That’s when I came to Wrexham Glyndŵr to do the course here - and they have helped me so much! It’s about taking that leap of faith – and coming to university gave me that confidence.” A number of the university’s supporting services will also be on hand on the day to speak to prospective students, including the award-winning careers team.

There is also the opportunity to speak to the admissions team about course entry requirements and the application process, student funding for information on funding and fees and the Student Union, who have recently opened a brand new student bar – The Lazy Lion. Charlotte Edwards CBE opens Oswestry School’s new £800K sports hall Oswestry School welcomed Charlotte Edwards CBE to open their new £800K sports facility, The Momentum Hall and presented Headmaster Julian Noad with the England shirt she wore for her World Twenty20 game in India in 2016. Charlotte is arguably England’s most recognisable female cricketer who was captain of the England women’s team from 2006. When she made her International debut in 1996 Charlotte became the youngest woman ever to play for England at just 16. It can house two netball courts, two tennis courts, court spaces for badminton, volleyball and basketball, plus there are three indoor cricket nets and can cater for functions of up to 800 people. Headmaster, Julian Noad, commented: “We are delighted that Charlotte has taken the time from her busy schedule to come and open the Momentum Hall. The school introduced girls’ cricket to the curriculum over a year ago and the teams, though

Pumpkin and Stilton Bread INGREDIENTS: 10g Fresh yeast 75g Water, tepid 135g Whole meal ﬂour 155g White bread ﬂour 100g Fermentation* 80g Blue cheese (we like Colston Bassett) 40g Pumpkin puree** 70g Grated carrot 3g Salt 15g Pumpkin seeds

FERMENTATION 170g Fruit juice with high sugar content (such as apple, pineapple, pear or grapefruit) 280g White bread ﬂour 15g Fresh yeast PUMPKIN PUREE 100g Cooking pumpkin Olive oil Salt Pepper

*METHOD FOR FERMENTATION Place the fruit juice in a warm place for 3-4 days prior to making the bread. When the fruit juice has fermented, place all the ingredients into a freestanding mixer and, using the dough hook attachment, mix on low speed for 7 minutes until a smooth silky dough has been achieved. Leave the dough in a warm place for 24 hours. After this, the fermentation will be ready to use. **METHOD FOR THE PUMPKIN PURE Peel and cut the pumpkin into small chunks, lightly coat in olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Place on a tray and roast lightly with no color until soft. Once cooked, leave to cool slightly then place into a jug blender and blend until smooth. METHOD FOR THE BREAD Add the yeast to the water to dissolve. In a freestanding mixer with a dough hook attachment, place the two ﬂours, fermentation, blue cheese, pumpkin puree and grated carrot into the bowl. Pour in the yeast and water and mix on a low speed for 5 minutes. Then add the salt and mix on a medium speed for a further 1 minute. Remove the dough from the mixer bowl and place into a clean bowl and cover with a damp cloth. Leave in a warm place until the dough has risen by two thirds its original size. Heat the oven to 220°c/425°F/gas mark 7. Knock back the dough and shape it into one large loaf, or two small boules. Place on a baking tray lined with parchment paper and sprinkle the pumpkin seeds over the bread. Cover the bread with a damp towel and leave until it has risen by two thirds its original size. Bake for 40-45 minutes. Allow to cool on a wire rack before slicing.

Wine and Spirit Trade Association figures show rum sales topped one billion recently and the Mojito is often cited as a favourite cocktail. Even the Pina Colada is seeing a resurgence - personally, I think the song is better than the drink. I find it hard to imagine that rum could overtake gin (which is still growing), but I’m often wrong. White, dark or spiced, rum certainly has the versatility to suit a wide range of tastes. Anecdotes aren’t evidence, but I’ve heard it said that rum and coke is once again becoming the drink of choice among a growing number of university students. Making rum is arguably more complicated than other spirits. Distilled from cane sugar molasses, it can be difficult to ferment and even harder to clean from your brewing and distilling equipment. And if you are making a darker rum, you have the added complication of cask aging. Rum has a great story. From Admiral Nelsons body being stored in a barrel of rum to preserve it, through to the 1808 Australian Rum Rebellion, where Governor Bligh was overthrown in a military coup because of his attempts to control rum consumption. Not exactly a true story, because although the military were involved in the transportation of rum, the coup was more to do with power in the new colony. But it all adds to the mystique of rum. And that’s without even mentioning pirates!

Life insurance - do I need it? You may have heard about life insurance and wondered ‘but, do I actually need it?’ The short answer is that if you have any liabilities or people who depend on your income to support them, then this is something that you should consider.

What is life insurance?

A monthly premium is paid which will provide a lump sum or regular payments upon your death, which can be paid to your dependants to help cover liabilities like a mortgage or other debt, to leave an inheritance, or to cover other expenses. By adding more ﬁnancial security, this can help bring peace of mind. The amount which you are covered for depends on the level you choose, with monthly premiums providing the cover during the selected period you have chosen.

There are two main types of life insurance: Term life insurance runs for a ﬁxed period, e.g. 5, 10 or 25 years. These policies only pay out if you die during the policy term. There is no lump sum payable at the end of the policy. A whole-of-life policy pays out no matter when you die, as long as you keep up with your premium payments.

A: As the Order was issued after the 8 December 2008 it is likely to contain a warning notice about the consequences if you fail to comply with its terms. If you stop the contact your ex will be able to apply for an enforcement Order. The punishment for breaching the Order can range from undertaking unpaid work to being committed to prison. However, the Court must be satisﬁed beyond reasonable doubt that a person has failed, without reasonable excuse, to comply with a Child Arrangements Order. The Court has to take into account the welfare of the child concerned and be satisﬁed that the making of any order is necessary to ensure compliance and that the enforcement Order is proportionate to the breach. The Court would be bound to investigate the circumstances and if it found that your ex was indeed smacking and/or acting in a manner not conducive to your son’s welfare, it may be decided that you had reasonable excuse to breach the Order and not make your son available for contact. You should give some thought to applying to the Court yourself to vary the Order. A good family lawyer will be able to help you make this application.

“The only thing we have to fear is fear itself”

I’ve just helped a rather large spider back outside as it tried to ﬁnd some home comfort on a cold evening. One in 20 of us would have found this a bit more challenging – they have arachnophobia: a fear of spiders. Phobias are interesting and affect about 10% of the population. The most common are fear of open spaces (agoraphobia), social phobia where meeting people is a challenge and then speciﬁc phobias (spiders, snakes and heights being the most common). They all seem to have acquired Greek names: fear of snakes is ophidiophobia and fear of heights is acrophobia. The anxiety response these sufferers experience is extreme and often completely irrational. Our spiders are harmless generally so are we programmed to avoid what were once poisonous creatures or have we just passed on a cultural

Aircraft technicians need to put their hands in all sorts of nooks and crannies. This particular one had arachnophobia: a spider could be hiding anywhere. He couldn’t do his job! I never actually met him but I did see a letter from his psychiatrist that closed the case. It said “I was delighted to see this young man again today and do not think I need to see him again. He brought his pet tarantula with him to clinic and I feel he is cured.” This man had undergone one of the common treatments for phobia involving a gradually increasing exposure to the source of the fear until the response was eliminated. In his case it might have worked too well!

Taken in the early and mid-20th century, these images show just how much, but also how little, Whittington has changed over the years. The main thing that strikes you on the first image of the ‘Three Trees’ is that the three trees themselves no longer exist! They sadly fell victim to Dutch Elm Disease in the 1970s and the area was remodelled which makes it impossible to get a meaningful ‘after’ view from the same angle. The road layout changed in the 1970s to make the road that passed the shop a cul-de-sac as well as removing the accident hotspot known as the Donnet Corner where the A5 met the Oswestry to Ellesmere road. The black and white building in the image was, for many years, a general store and post office but has since become a private dwelling. The post office actually moved to the bungalow next door in the 1960s when it was run by Mrs Peel, but the shop remained open. The unusual view taken from behind the castle moat is from the 1950s and shows the village garage, then run by Albert Peel, (whose wife ran the post office) and one of at least four grocery stores that the village boasted back then. This was run by the Wilkes’ and later became the Castle Gallery Antique Shop. The garage was bought by my father, Fred Owen, in 1966 and ran as a traditional village garage for many years before being redeveloped in the early part of this century. The grocery store and attached house were demolished in recent years following a vehicle accident which resulted in severe damage to the structure. One other interesting difference is 58

the amount of weed on the castle pool in the earlier picture. Back in those days much of the waste water from the old Express Dairy found its way into the pools and made them a very fertile environment for water cress and other aquatic plants. They had to be regularly ‘dragged’ to clear, what was often, a solid green layer of algae and plant life covering almost the entire surface.

Spotting Toadstools at Ifton Meadows Summer is over, and we are well into autumn. The flowers and butterflies are few and far between, and the migratory birds have left us. We can now concentrate on autumn leaf colours and the beautiful array of toadstools and fungus. Now is the perfect time to make the trip over to Ifton Meadows, which must be one of the best places for fungi in the area. Going through St Martins from the A483, pass by Stan’s and go straight at the mini-roundabout then taking the first left. Carry on out of the village and take the next left. The reserve is signposted. Drop to the bottom of the hill and take the next right. 100 metres on there is a small parking area. This is the “Colliery Entrance”. Check the handy map on the notice board and make sure you go left after the little stream and take in Price’s Dingle. There are around 15,000 types of toadstools or mushrooms in the UK and I am not an expert. The only mushrooms I eat are those I find on the supermarket shelves. I can name a few of the more common ones, but it’s spotting them and marvelling at their structures that appeals to me. There is not a clear distinction between the terms toadstool and mushroom, they are the fruiting body of a fungus which spreads through the ground or rotting matter and helps to decompose dead plant material. Some of the toadstools can be hard to miss being the size of dinner plates, or bright colours like the classic spotted Fly Agaric. Others can be tiny and camouflaged. My favourites are the clumps of small toadstools, usually on tree stumps, that resemble fairytale castles. There are plenty of other places to see wonderful toadstools. Favourite locations are the base of the Hillfort, Llynclys Common, the Racecourse and Candy Woods, but wherever there is rotting plant material you’ll find toadstools at this time of year. What is a periodic inspection? A periodic inspection is an inspection and testing to check whether an electrical installation is in a satisfactory condition for continued service. On completion of the necessary inspection and testing, an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) will be issued detailing any defects, dangerous conditions and non-compliances with the present-day safety standard which might give rise to danger. A report will always determine if an installation is either satisfactory or unsatisfactory for continued use. I’m a landlord, how often should I have an inspection carried out in my property? If you own an HMO (House in Multiple Occupation), you have a legal obligation to have a periodic inspection carried out on your property every five years. If your property is not an HMO, then you are not legally obliged to get your installation tested on a periodic basis. However, I recommend that you

have an EICR carried out every five years or on change of tenancy – whichever comes first. An EICR should be carried out more frequently on the places such as caravans (3 years) and swimming pools (1 year). When will I need a rewire? There are no set guidelines as to when a property should be rewired. Just because your wiring’s old, it doesn’t mean it’s unsafe. Many factors affect the wear and tear of an electrical installation. I would advise that an EICR is carried out on owner-occupied properties at least every 10 years and every five years in rented accommodation. The test will certify whether the electrics in a property are safe and tell you if anything needs upgrading. An EICR can take as little as half a day on a domestic property. Clocking up the smiles Journalist, car enthusiast and new dad Richard Jones takes the C4 Cactus for a test drive with baby Isabelle Parents will be well versed with the nursery rhyme ‘Row Row Row Your Boat’. It is fast becoming Isabelle’s favourite so last weekend we took her to Ellesmere so she could have a go on the water for real. The Mere in Ellesmere provides the perfect setting to explore wildlife, and with rowing boats available to hire it lends itself perfectly to a fabulous family day out. However we don’t live in Ellesmere so, as with all of our ‘daddydaughter’ days, the adventure starts with the car journey and this week we had the pleasure of testing the Citroen C4 Cactus. The Cactus brings a breath of fresh air and originality to the hatch segment. Its mid-life facelift has seen the side air-bumps removed and it now boasts a far more elegant and dynamic appeal. I am sure Belle would have loved pressing up against the ridiculous air-bumps of the 2014 launch model but I personally hated them from day one and am much more in favour of the toned-down side sills. Unlike its name, which suggest the Cactus’ ride might be a little prickly; the car is one of the most comfortable on the market. It takes a bit of time to get used to as the seats are really big and I found myself getting lost in them, but the added width you get made our journey to Ellesmere most pleasant. As Belle gets older she doesn’t tend to fall asleep as quickly as she used to on a car journey – she now wants to tell us what animals she can see out of the windows - but whether 64

she was especially tired on this journey or the C4 Cactus’s improved suspension did its job, the desired affect was the same after about 30 minutes. With Belle asleep I could turn my attention from singing Row Row Row Your Boat, while she swayed back and forth in her car seat, to how the C4 Cactus handled. If I was being picky I would describe the steering as a bit too light and not overly responsive, but that said the vast majority of buyers won’t be put off by this as it is still more than pleasant to drive, especially on the larger commuting roads. The Cactus I had on test came ﬁtted with Citroen’s Pure Tech petrol 1199cc engine in 109bhp form. It’s a great engine, with plenty of punch. It would be my engine of choice, but an even greater tip would be to upgrade to the technology-laden range-topping Flair edition as it comes complete with sat-nav, rear parking sensors, reversing camera,

panoramic glass roof, 17-inch alloy, tinted rear windows, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring and a reversing camera. Once at Ellesmere we enjoyed a fabulous day out. Belle not only got to spend time on my knee helping to row the boat but we also fed the ducks, went for a lovely walk and enjoyed a drink and snacks in the nearby restaurant. I would recommend the Mere to any family looking for a nice day out, and I would deﬁnitely recommend the C4 Cactus. With prices ranging from £18,090 it is one of the most competitive cars in its market.

Balloon carnival lights up Oswestry Lindstrand Technologies, Oswestry Town Council, Nightingale House Hospice and Cloud 9 Balloons all came together to put on a fantastic balloon carnival in the centre of Oswestry on the August bank holiday weekend. Crowds packed into the park from 6am on Saturday to watch 30 balloons launch, before strong winds brought a halt to the proceedings. Fairground rides and stalls kept the crowds entertained and the Owl Man UK brought a selection of his feathered friends for visitors to hold. By night the weather had improved, and the balloons put on an impressive night glow for the crowds. Organisers were forced to call the event off on Sunday as it was plagued with heavy rain.

LAST WORD

Keeping your cool when they go back to school Whoever it was that invented school and made it compulsory – I’d like to thank them. After nine long weeks juggling childcare with work, getting used to the noise and the company, suddenly it’s time to get back to the old routine. It was only last week I had to drag them along with me to a doctor’s appointment and physically restrain them from having a wrestling match in the consultation room. The week before that I decided to take an important work call in the bathroom at home where I wouldn’t be disturbed. I forgot to lock the door and within minutes Florence (4) bounced in to use the toilet before I could stop her. Trying to go about your normal life with two young children in tow is like running on sand; challenging, uncomfortable, messy, but in the end, it can only make you stronger.

Don’t fret, to keep your cool now they’re back in school, I’ve got a few ideas to maximise your quality time together while ensuring you still get stuff done.

The school runs As working mums will know, making school drop-offs and pick-ups every day isn’t always possible. Try to do at least one each day, either the drop-off to settle them in to school or the pick-up and see how pleased they are to see you.

Mealtimes Try to have at least one meal with your kids every day, a bowl of cereal together before school or work or an evening meal around the table. It’s a chance to spend some quality time together while fuelling up and asking them about their day.

Read together

Multi-tasking skills are heightened for the duration of the holidays and we mums become like supreme leaders, able to command an army of small people, negotiate business deals and keep the household running like clockwork.

Doing homework together or reading a bed time story is a great opportunity to cuddle up and really engage. I ﬁnd it’s at this time that they might open up to me about what’s happened in school that day, good and bad.

Now they’re back at school, like many busy mum’s, I’m regretting that I didn’t take enough time to enjoy them over the summer holidays. We’re always so preoccupied with our jobs, housework and life admin that even taking just an hour off to enjoy their company can seem impossible.

Schedule activities

Rather than assume you’ll come up with a great activity to do at the weekend, book something and write it in your planner. Once you’re committed to doing it, you’ll do it. It’s these days out and experiences that help create memories of your time together.

Do the housework

Housework is a necessary evil, so you might as well try and get some help from your little ones. They may seem like a chore to you, but pairing socks, cooking dinner and cleaning the house can all be made a fun activity to a four-year-old, where they also learn useful skills.

Put the phone down

It’s easy to get stuck in an Instagram scroll hole, only glancing up at the kids occasionally. If you’re making a conscious effort to spend quality time together, leave the phone in a different room to avoid getting distracted.

Work later

If you can, save your admin and housework until after the kids are in bed. You can give them your full attention at bed time and then get stuff done more efﬁciently without the distractions.

Treat yourself

I’ve saved the best until last to make sure it stays freshest in your memory. To be energised and enthusiastic about spending time together, you also need to take time for yourself. Go out somewhere alone, read a book, watch some Netﬂix, do whatever you need to do to refresh and recharge after the summer holidays. It won’t be long until October half term and you can start the whole process again.
