Approachable and thoughtful Ward Clerk named Health Hero A ward clerk who has been described as ‘approachable, kind and thoughtful’ has been named July’s Health Hero at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital. Tina Davies, who works on Baschurch Day Unit at the Oswestry-based hospital, won the award for being an amazing ambassador and first point-of-contact for the unit. The award is presented to unsung heroes from across the hospital, who are nominated by their colleagues for going above and beyond. Tina was nominated by Rachel Owen, staff nurse, on Baschurch Day Unit. She said: “When you arrive at Baschurch, Tina is sat at the reception desk is often the first person patients and families meet. “She greets people with a friendly, genuine smile and effortlessly puts people at ease, especially when their emotions and nerves can be running high. “Throughout the years I’ve worked with Tina, she goes above and beyond the call of duty to ensure she does everything in her power to benefit her colleagues, patients and their relatives. “Tina is very intuitive and caring and I feel very privileged to work alongside her.” The award was presented to her by Mark Brandreth, chief executive, in front of patients on Baschurch Day Unit who were waiting to go for surgery. Tina said: “I’m so shocked, it hasn’t hit home that Rachel nominated me and I was chosen as a winner but I’m so grateful. “I absolutely love the hospital, I’ve worked here for 10 years and I’ve met some amazing people and made great friends along the way – I’m very lucky.” TOP: Rachel Owen, staff nurse; Tina Davies, ward clerk; Mark Brandreth, chief executive; and Rachael Flood, Baschurch day unit manager.

£1,800 raised for Children’s Wales Air Ambulance An Oswestry family who recently held a charity evening have raised £1,800 for the Children’s Wales Air Ambulance. Nia Morris and her husband Ian and daughter Alice from Oswestry decided to hold the charity event to thank the Children’s Wales Air Ambulance for transporting their daughter Florence all the way from Leeds down to Wrexham Maelor hospital with great care. Nia told Oswestry Life magazine, “We had a difficult summer in 2017, and as a family we wanted to raise a nice amount of money to help family’s who find themselves in a similar situation to us. “The monies will go direct to the Children’s Wales Air Ambulance, not a lot of people realise this incredible service is available for children.” The fun-filled family evening held at the end of July at The Venue, consisted of a hog roast, charity auction and live music. Nia said, “We would like to thank everyone who donated and attended the charity evening.” TOP: The Morris family hand over their donation to Children’s Wales Air Ambulance

Charity calendar launched

Britain in Bloom judges visit town Oswestry recently welcomed judges from Britain in Bloom, the UK’s longest running gardening competition. After winning ‘Best In Class’ in the Heart Of England competition for the first time in 2017, Oswestry was automatically entered into the “Large Town” class in the national Britain In Bloom competition. This is quite an accolade and something the Oswestry in Bloom committee are extremely proud of. The committee has worked closely with both Shropshire Council and Oswestry Town Council in creating a special visit for the judges. Cae Glas Park was one of the main attractions, however the judges were also keen to see a town clean from graffiti and litter, a town that supports community projects and a town that protects its heritage. The three-hour visit involved presentations, visits, walking and driving tours and discussions with local media. The judges enjoyed a civic welcome from the mayor, councillor Sandy Best and a louder one from the recently appointed town crier Phil Brown. Results will be announced in October at a presentation evening in Belfast. ABOVE: The maintenance team Jason Brotherton, Chris Powell and

Oswestry Community Games

The sixth annual Oswestry Community Games is set to take place on 23 September in Cae Glas Park from 11am to 3.45pm. It promises to be yet another successful day in the park with sport, music, arts and dance from local groups all providing free activities. Special guest on the day will be Di Carrington who was part of the all-female crew to take on the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, where she claimed three world records. Rowing 3,000 miles from the Canary Islands to the Caribbean, the journey took 60 days, 18 hours and 34 minutes, with the crew contending with 40 ft waves, chronic sleep deprivation and strong winds. Di said: “I am honoured and delighted to be involved and part of this special day. It will be an absolute privilege to attend the Oswestry Community Games, and I very much look forward to contributing towards making the Games another success.” ABOVE RIGHT: Di Carrington, guest of honour at this year’s Oswestry Community Games

Joint managing director, David Lee-Birch of DTS Media Limited said: “We are overwhelmed by the success of our titles, our Oswestry Life title which was only launched in March 2017 has fast become Oswestry’s number one publication and we wanted to celebrate by giving something back to a local charity.” “We are very privileged to have such a prestigious local photographer, Graham Mitchell working alongside our brand, supporting the magazine, both in print and daily on our social media channels, therefore we will be showcasing Graham’s photographs, capturing the local beauty we have on our door step within our beautiful glossy 2019 launching soon. All proceeds from the sale of the calendar (£6.50) will go direct to Hope House. “We would like to thank our loyal advertisers who have sponsored the printing and made this exciting project possible.” Hope House area fundraiser Lynsey Kilvert said: “We are so grateful that Oswestry Life magazine have chosen Hope House as their charity”. “Oswestry Life are tremendous supporters of Hope House and we are proud to be associated with such a fantastic local publication.” Visit www.oswestry.life to order a calendar.

A golden season for the Otters Local swimming club, Oswestry Otters’ 2017-18 season has ended on a high. After investing in its first paid head coach (Timothie Hastie), the club has gone from strength to strength, including introducing a five day training schedule for all members and registering the club as a charity. “We have been so inspired and proud of our members this year, in particular the club spirit has been shown by Morgan Jones who competed at the British Swimming Championships in Edinburgh in March and Tom Piggott who went to the British Para-Swimming Championships in Sheffield. We also super succeeded expectations at this year’s Home Nationals in Wales - Swansea. It was a long seven days of events with about 75 hours of swimming, nevertheless we saw 15 finalists from Shropshire members. A total of nine

As Dave says in the introduction to his book - ‘I wish to dedicate this book to the people of Oswestry. It was you I had in mind as my potential audience while I was

“We can all be proud of the fact that he was a native of our town, just as he himself was proud of his connection with the area and with his Welsh forefathers.” writing it. Wilfred Owen was born in our town and we should be proud of his achievements.’

In the spotlight

‘Wilfred Owen: Poet of Oswestry’ a new book by Dave Andrews

Many of us know that Wilfred Owen was born in Oswestry and that he was killed during World War One but most of us probably know very little else about him - except perhaps that he became famous as a poet after his death. Dave Andrews’ new book on the town’s most famous son provides a clear and concise introduction to Wilfred Owen’s short but eventful life. “I wanted to write a book that would give people the main facts about Wilfred Owen without going into great depth”, says Dave. “He deserves to be better known and better understood. I also wanted to remind the world that he was born here in Oswestry. Other places may claim him as theirs and commemorate his name, but we can all be proud of the fact that he was a native of our town, just as he himself was proud of his connection with the area and with his Welsh forefathers.” As well as a biographical section on Wilfred, the book has separate

sections on his poetic development and his Welsh identity. “I realised that not everyone might be interested in his development as a poet,” says Dave, “so I decided to discuss this in a separate section. It will provide a solid basis for students of his work and for people who want to learn about the influences on his poetry.” ‘Wilfred Owen: Poet of Oswestry’ has been written to coincide with the town’s centenary commemorations of Wilfred’s death in battle in 1918. At the time of his death, his work was virtually unknown and it was to be several years before his poetry reached a wider audience. His reputation grew steadily during the twentieth century and in particular during the 1960s. Today his poems are read and studied throughout the English-speaking world and beyond it in translation. Wilfred Owen - a son of Oswestry - is now regarded as one of the greatest poets of the twentieth century in the English language.

Dave is currently Reader and Writer in Residence at Oswestry Library and holds degrees in literature from the universities of Bangor and Oxford. He has published a number of books in Welsh and English including novels and guidebooks to the mountains of Wales. His two most recent books, The Oswestry Round and Gobowen to Everest, were both written to raise money for Cancer Research UK and Lingen Davies Cancer Fund, for whom Dave is a Community Coordinator. ‘Wilfred Owen: Poet of Oswestry’ is Dave’s tenth book.

‘Wilfred Owen: Poet of Oswestry’ is available in Booka and also online from www.oswestryround.co.uk Priced at £5. You can also contact Dave directly for a signed copy at dand103750@aol.com Dave is available to give talks on his books. Oswestry life

Every car is tracked in real time and customers get a confirmation text message detailing the price and even the type of car, colour and registration number to look out for. “Our minimum fares start at £3.70, which is one of the lowest in the area,” she said. “We have seen a massive increase in customers generally but have noticed the number of calls rising from people who need a taxi to and from Oswestry.

Go Carz expands into Oswestry

Managers at Go Carz, which has opened new offices in Oswestry, have spoken at their delight of moving into the town. Cindy Wilday, director of the private hire firm, said Oswestry and the surrounding area was very much on the up and Go Carz was thrilled at the prospect of being part of the current business boom in the town. “It is interesting to think back a couple of years when everything seemed doom and gloom after the Brexit vote,” she said. “But I think most people and businesses have just decided to get on with it - and nowhere is that more obvious than in Oswestry. “Shropshire holds a very special place in the hearts of the Go Carz team, as it was where our MD, Carl, started his taxi business 20 years ago. “Go Carz may now be the largest private hire company in the West Midlands but we always remember our roots and are always delighted to play a community role wherever and whenever we can. “We have built up a fantastic loyal customer base over the years and have become more and more aware in recent times that something good was happening in Oswestry.

“It’s a cracking market town and home to one of the finest hospitals in the country. People have been travelling with us for days out in the town and to attend hospital appointments. “It got to the point where we knew we needed to expand and develop a full-time presence in the town. “It means we are now the only private hire firm to have offices in Shrewsbury, Telford and Oswestry and the feedback we are getting from this new venture has been almost unanimously positive. “We place great store on what our customers say and how we can improve our service. “Customer satisfaction is very important and we believe if we offer a top quality service they will continue to come back. “To maintain this high level of service we must also provide the drivers to keep up with demand. We need to ensure customers are not kept waiting any longer than necessary and that means being ready to go at a moment’s notice. “Our drivers are all highly trained, over and above the required minimum, and our new office means we have some continually based in Oswestry. “We are looking to take on more drivers in the town and would like to hear from anyone who is interested in driving for us. We are keen to hear from anyone who is a qualified taxi driver and from anyone who is looking at starting up as a taxi driver.”

“There is a vibrancy about the place, a brightness and a desire to succeed and I think that is why it has become so popular with tradespeople and business folk in and around the town.” Cindy said one of the reasons behind the success of Go Carz was the state-of-the-art technology underpinning the service.

Weight loss is a journey Obesity is a time bomb and The World Health Organisation envisage that obesity will become a significant global problem and lead to premature death due to its association with serious chronic conditions such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidaemia, which are all major risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Nuffield Health Shrewsbury offer three different surgical routes to weight loss:

Gastric banding Gastric banding is a highly effective weight loss surgical procedure that limits how much food you can eat. Also known as lap banding, the operation helps overweight people achieve substantial and long-term weight loss. You may be eligible for surgery if your BMI (body mass index) is over 40, or if it is over 35 and you have other medical conditions.

Sleeve gastrectomy

personal weight loss journey which will help to achieve and maintain a healthy weight. “It’s not just about surgery. Healthy eating and a good knowledge of nutritional properties of food can go a long way to helping with weight loss. Exercise plays a vital part too. “For those that have been carrying extra weight for a long period of time, a full health assessment to check on any impact excess weight is having on internal organs is essential. In severe cases, a combination of liposuction and a gastric band might be necessary.” Mr Manel Riera, bariatric surgeon emphasises that the weight loss journey is more than just a quick-fix surgical intervention. “Surgical operations cannot cure obesity, but they make it easier for you to learn new eating habits. With the advice of your dietician, you can lose weight and maintain weight loss. The surgery will only be successful with your commitment to follow the advice.

Sleeve gastrectomy is a restrictive procedure where the stomach is stapled from top to bottom leaving a sleeve-shaped stomach a quarter of its original size. This resulting in less food consumption and resulting weight loss.

“Regular check-up appointments and meeting with the dietician and following an eating plan, will help you to adjust to your new weight and diet.

Gastric bypass

“The surgery allows people to achieve a positive transformation across all their activities and goals, professional, family, social. Some people’s lives are completely restarted after their success.”

This is a type of weight loss that works by making your stomach smaller and bypassing part of the digestive system, meaning you can only eat small meals and your body absorbs less food. Weight loss surgery has been proven to be most effective and you can look forward to a boost in confidence and other very positive lifestyle changes. Following weight loss surgery, the majority of patients experience a great increase in wellbeing and quality of life. As they lose weight, they are capable of more physical activity, better general health, and are less at risk from obesity related diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure. Weight loss isn’t just about being more confident in the way you look, it’s also about improving your overall health, says Mr James Rink, bariatric surgeon at Nuffield Health Shrewsbury. “We can guide you through a range of options for a 14 | Oswestry life

“The week before surgery you will need to go on a low

fat, sugar and carbohydrate diet. After the procedure your diet will initially consist of liquids or pureed food and finally small portions of nutritious, healthy food.” Mr Rink ends: “What people often don’t understand are the enormous improvements people feel in their whole wellbeing. The surgery allows people to achieve a positive transformation across all their activities and goals, professional, family, social. Some people’s lives are completely restarted after their success.” Nuffield Health Shrewsbury are holding a Weight Loss Surgery Explained event on 26 September from 7pm until 9pm where consultants Mr James Rink and Mr Manel Riera will be available to meet. Q&A

with Darron Humphreys of Prudent Financial Planning

It covers most illnesses that leave you unable to work - either in the short or long term (depending on the type of policy and its definition of incapacity)

Q: My financial adviser recommends that I should consider income protection assurance to cover my mortgage outgoings in the event of accident or illness. How does this policy work?

It’s not the same as critical illness insurance, which pays out a one-off lump sum if you have a specific serious illness

You can claim as many times as you need to - while the policy lasts

A: Income protection assurance (sometimes known as permanent health insurance) is a long-term insurance policy designed to help you if you can’t work because you’re ill or injured. The key features of this type of protection plan are: It replaces part of your income - if you can’t work because you become ill or disabled It pays out until you can start working again - or until you retire, die or the end of the policy term whichever is sooner There’s often a waiting period before the payments start - you generally set payments to start after your sick pay ends, or after any other insurance stops covering you. The longer you wait, the lower the monthly premiums

It’s not the same as short-term income protection, which also pays out a monthly sum related to your income, but only for a limited period of time (normally between two and five years) and can cover fewer illnesses or situations With income protection insurance, everything depends on getting the right policy – so it’s best to get advice from a financial adviser or broker. A reputable financial adviser should recommend a suitable income protection plan individually tailored to match your needs which should save you time and money. Sage green One colour that is making a comeback in full force this year is Sage Green and we are very happy about it.

This sophisticated earthy shade of green has many different tones allowing you to pick the one that works best for the space and decor. It can be incorporated into your interior in a lot of ways due to being a fairly neutral shade, meaning there’s no danger of it being too overpowering in your home. We rounded up our best sage green products in all different tones to show you the wide variety of the colour and spark inspiration of how you can use this on trend colour in your own way.

When investing in a borehole for your property, whether commercial or domestic, they will help you assess the feasibility of an installation and also identify the potential cost savings based on your current metered charges. They provide a complete installation package, which includes a storage tank, variable speed distribution pumps, pressure vessel, control system and, if required, water treatment. They also specialise in Ground Source Heating systems. Extracting energy from the ground to heat a property is a sustainable use of the Earth’s natural resources and could reduce your fuel bills. A few metres below the ground, the temperature is constant throughout the year and this energy can be harnessed to heat your home and water. They drill boreholes from which a ground source heat pump can extract, convert and transfer energy for domestic properties, commercial facilities and leisure complexes.

The benefits of ground source heating systems include: • On average, 75% free renewable energy • Government incentives available • Fixed and stable energy costs • Lower carbon emissions • Constant heat 24 hours a day • Fuels both hot water and heating • Directly replaces your existing boiler • Reversible to provide cooler temperatures in summer • Can add value to property If you have high water or energy bills why not contact Dragon Drilling today for a free site assessment to see if they could start saving you money. Gardening

Fashionably late Perennials Add fresh excitement to your autumn displays by including a selection of seasonal stunners to flower beds and patio pots. Several hardy perennials have been patiently growing all year, waiting for their turn to take centre stage. And now their time has come to burst into bloom, filling our gardens with vibrant colour. Japanese anemones are always a favourite. Tall and bold, their simple flowers in shades from pink to white really celebrate the season. They’re adaptable too, growing in sites from full sun to partial shade. Commonly called Ice Plants, the thick fleshy foliage of sedum varieties add interest throughout the year, from the moment it develops in spring. Varieties are available with foliage colours from green to grey and deep purple, and some with variegated green and white leaves look particularly impressive grown individually in small terracotta pots. Their flowers come in eye-catching colours from pure white to pink and red, proving as attractive to us as they are bees and butterflies. Michaelmas Day is celebrated on 29 September and lends its name to one of the most valuable hardy

perennials to flower through September and October, the Michaelmas Daisies. Many are varieties of the New York aster, Aster novi-belgii, but several other types of aster are available also. A succession of blooms gives asters long-lasting appeal, and they make great cut flowers too. Verbena is another great performer, flowering over many months to really earn its place in any garden. It’s hard to beat the Argentinian vervain, Verbena bonariensis, valued for its tall, branching stems topped with clusters of purple flowers. Its airy growth habit means it can be slotted in among lower neighbours, growing-up and flowering above them. For patio pots try growing the more compact and bushier Verbena rigida instead.

The school is set in beautiful grounds of more than 65 acres, but within easy reach of the network of main roads that enables access to the wider region and beyond. Boarding remains as popular as ever with first-class pastoral care, support and stability provided by a dedicated and professional team. The new academic year begins with new house parents, Roy and Cristina Chambers, taking over boys’ boarding. In common with the girls’ house parents, James and Beth Mullock, they are

NSC Family Fun Day raises funds for local charities North Shropshire College (NSC) recently held its fourth family fun day at the Oswestry Campus. The money raised on the day is being given to two local charities; C.R.Y for Matthew and Isabelle Lottie Foundation. The day was a great success, with a wide variety of different attractions including a tombola, raffle, animals from Walford, bouncy castle, face painting, stalls, dance displays and lots of scrumptious food made by staff and students from India, Syria and Romania. Lucy Evans, marketing and customer service manager at NSC comments: “We would like to thank everyone who supported the Family Fun day and helped the college to raise money for two great causes. We are also delighted to announce that £1000 was raised in total and this will be split equally between both charities.” There is still time to apply to study at NSC for September 2018. Recipes Looking for a fun, healthy way to power your children back to school this September? We take a refreshing look at the most important meal of the day and include a selection of mouth-watering meals.

Shake it up Brimming with colour, these shakes and smoothies are the perfect breakfast for when you’re in a rush. Get Creative. The possibilities are endless - and delicious!

Super green smoothie bowl INGREDIENTS: ½ a ripe avocado 1 small banana, peeled, sliced and frozen 100g Bonne Maman Rhubarb Compote 15g fresh young spinach leaves 2.5cm piece fresh ginger, peeled and grated 200ml coconut water METHOD: Combine everything in a blender or food processor until smooth. Pour into a deep cereal bowl and top with extra fruit, granola and coconut flakes.

Oaty apricot & mango smoothie bowl INGREDIENTS: 15g porridge oats 100g mango pieces, frozen 100g Bonne Maman Apricot Compote 150g fat-free, thick set natural yoghurt 150ml pressed apple juice METHOD: Whizz up all the ingredients in a blender or processor until smooth. Pour into a deep cereal bowl and top with extra compote, fruit and toasted almonds or granola.

Apricot, orange & carrot shake INGREDIENTS: 200g Bonne Maman Apricot Compote 75g fat-free, thick-set natural yoghurt 100g cooked carrots 150ml fresh orange and mango juice 1-2 cardamom seeds (optional) METHOD: Put all the ingredients into a blender or food processor, then blitz until smooth. Add a little extra milk if you prefer a thinner consistency.

Berry cherry shake INGREDIENTS: 75g Bonne Maman Cherry Compote 75g fresh raspberries 1 ripe small banana 100g fat-free, think-set natural yoghurt 200ml milk (whatever you prefer) METHOD: Put all the ingredients into a blender or food processor, then blitz until smooth. Add a little extra milk if you prefer a thinner consistency. COOKS TIP: Shakes and smoothies make an excellent quick breakfast and can also count towards your recommended portions of fruit and veg per day.

Breakfast compote lollies

DARK RUMS are strong-flavoured and come from areas such as Jamaica and Haiti. FLAVOURED RUMS are infused with fruit flavours like mango, coconut or lime. Usually less than 40% ABV. GOLD RUMS, also called “amber” rums, are medium-bodied and generally aged. These gain their dark colour from aging in wooden barrels. LIGHT RUMS, also referred to as “silver” or “white” rums, tend to have very little flavour aside from a general sweetness. They’re often filtered after aging to remove any colour.

METHOD: In a small bowl, mix the granola with the caramel and stir well to combine.

OVERPROOF RUMS can be as high as 75% (150 proof) to 80% (160 proof), one example is Pitorro moonshine. Usually served mixed.

Spoon the mixture into the bottom of 6 ice-lolly moulds and press down firmly with the handle of a wooden spoon.

PREMIUM RUMS are from boutique brands that sell carefully produced and aged rums. With more character and flavour than their “mixing” counterparts, they’re generally consumed straight.

Add alternative dollops of yoghurt and compote. Insert a lolly stick into each and freeze overnight until firm. COOKS TIPS:

INGREDIENTS: 60g toasted granola 2 tbsp Bonne Maman Salted Caramel 300g fat-free, thick- set natural yoghurt 200g Bonne Maman Cherry, Apricot or Rhubarb Compote

Rum is a spirit made from sugar cane or molasses, and because of this most of it is traditionally produced in the Caribbean and Latin America. Much as rum is hugely gaining in popularity it is highly unlikely that we will see a glut of British rums, purely because we cannot grow sugar cane. Here’s seven of the most common types:

For a dairy-free alternative, puree the compote with a little fresh orange juice and make compoteonly lollies. If you don’t have custom-made lolly moulds, then small freezer-proof containers will do the job. Just pop a lolly stick into the mix and freeze in the same way as with proper moulds. When you take them out of the freezer, run the outside of the container under hot water to release the lolly.

SPICED RUMS obtain their flavours with spices and, sometimes, caramel. Most are darker in colour and based on gold rums. So, if you want to try rum, but rum and coke doesn’t do it for you why not try a Dark and Stormy - Dark rum, like Goslings, with ginger beer and a nice wedge of fresh lime or instead of having a brandy or a whiskey after dinner why not have a good rum such as an old J or an Appletons?

Take a seat at...

Simla Tandoori Restaurant I chose an early Thursday evening in August for a welcome return to the Simla Tandoori Restaurant, located in Beatrice Street in the centre of Oswestry. Despite the early time and being mid-week, the restaurant was packed with customers, including a large group celebrating a 70th birthday party.

“The salmon was cooked beautifully, firm but tender. Our bindi bhajee was crammed with okra and there was plenty of fresh coriander to top it off.”

We were welcomed by the proprietor George Miah who showed us up to our table in the raised eating area. The restaurant provides a great eating atmosphere and there is plenty of room at each table, I do hate cramped restaurants. George founded the Simla in 1976, 42 years ago. Originating in Bangladesh, George sought to provide Oswestry with good authentic Indian food. At the time it was the first Indian restaurant in the area, the nearest ones being in Wrexham and Shrewsbury. It was quite a novelty for Oswestry, and they actually served more English dishes than curries at first. The restaurant and Indian food then became more and more popular and the Simla became part of Oswestry’s establishment. George has continued at the helm and has raised his family here. It is true to say that George loves Oswestry and Oswestry loves George. A “birthday” celebration each year raises money for Hope House and Severn Hospice, and George has been recognised for his work for charity and for the community. 48 | Oswestry life

Vegetable Balti £7.25 Special Fish Deluxe (Salmon) £10.95 Bindi Bhajee (Okra) £3.50 Kingfisher lager £2.50

As we were eating early, we chose a main dish and accompaniments washed down with a cold Kingfisher lager. My wife is vegetarian and opted for a Vegetable Balti. I am particularly fond of fish curry, so was attracted to the “Special Fish Dishes” section of the menu. George recommended the Fish Delux, salmon cooked in a rich tomato based mild curry sauce and served with pilau rice. The salmon was cooked beautifully, firm but tender. Our bindi bhajee was crammed with okra and there was plenty of fresh coriander to top it off. The large puffy naan bread was put to good use clearing the plates. As we left, more customers were arriving, so I’d suggest making a reservation, even mid-week. Wild life It’s official, the autumn wardrobe has hit the shops. The trends featuring heavily this season are the black and white 80’s vibe, checks and the safari theme. I’m happy as I can dust off my white stilettos, but I’m also excited to bring 2018 in to these styles. Back in the jungle, the safari trend is with full-on animal prints or just a patch here and there. They were head to toe on the catwalk but approach with caution unless you’re feeling dangerous!

Law firm pledges support for Armed Forces A Shropshire law firm has signed up to a scheme which pledges to help and support serving and retired armed forces personnel and their families. The Armed Forces Covenant was set up to ensure all those who serve or have served their country and their families should be treated with fairness and respect within the local community, economy and society in general. It covers such areas as education and wellbeing, access to a home, career, healthcare, financial assistance and discounted services. Lanyon Bowdler partner Dawn Humphries and chartered legal executive Sophie Davies attended RAF Shawbury to officially sign the covenant - a move the firm sees as a major commitment to the armed forces. “Lanyon Bowdler is very proud and honoured to have been invited to sign the Armed Forces Covenant,” said Dawn. “We fully support the idea behind it and its goals in giving practical help to those people who have served our country.

Above from left, Sgt Lee Jones, 1 Royal Irish, Group Captain Norris, Station Commander RAF Shawbury and Lt Cdr Robley RN, Defence Helicopter Flying School, with Dawn Humphries and Sophie Davies of Lanyon Bowdler.

“Our armed forces protect us with honour and courage, often paying the ultimate sacrifice so our country can remain safe. “It is only fitting that we repay that sort of commitment by making one of our own and offer a guarantee that we are there to help them when they need it most.

“Armed forces personnel are often confronted with problems that affect their day-to-day lives, and organisations such as Lanyon Bowdler are keen to ensure they receive the appropriate help and support they need, and by signing up to this covenant we are pledging our commitment.

I believe I am a lot better now but the doctors say they might section me because they’re worried about my health and safety. They think I am going to hurt myself. Can they section me?

A: If you are staying in hospital as an informal patient, it means you are there voluntarily and are free to leave the hospital as and when you choose. However, if the health professionals looking after you in hospital do not believe you are ready to return home because of concerns about the impact your mental health may have on yourself or others, two doctors can recommend that you be detained under section 2 of the Mental Health Act and the application for admission is then made by an Approved Mental Health Practitioner. This is for assessment of up to 28 days or assessment followed by medical treatment. If you try to leave the hospital unexpectedly, the doctors can prepare a report to the hospital managers recommending that an application ‘ought to be made’ keeping you in hospital for a period of 72 hours so that you can be assessed. If the hospital managers agree, you will not be allowed to leave the hospital for the 72 hour period until the doctors have decided whether to release you from hospital or section you under the Mental Health Act 1983. In emergencies, certain nurses can detain you for a period of 6 hours. Should you be sectioned by the doctors there are strict time limits for you to appeal against your detention to a Mental Health Tribunal If you are in any doubt about your rights you should contact a specialist mental health solicitor. Further information relating to this question is available from Natalie Roberts, a Partner with GHP Legal. HEALTH

Dr Paul Middleton

“Accidents will happen no matter how careful a man be” Wilkie Collins Accidental injuries are one of the top 10 UK health issues and I agree with the quotation – they WILL happen, but I still prefer the idea that they CAN happen. This introduces the idea that we might be able to stop them. I used to smile whenever I passed the RoSPA building in Birmingham – The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents. The first time I went that way two cars hit each other right outside their sign! However their website - www.rospa.com – has information that all of us might find useful. Children do not see common dangers and parents will find the site has a useful section full of advice. Car drivers, employers, sportsmen and particularly those of us over 60 are all at risk. One in three of those over 65 will have at least one fall a year and it’s this group we’re going to focus on. What can we do personally? What can we do for others? Staying as fit as possible is perhaps the obvious one here. Keeping active: whatever your activity level, keep it up. Eat a good diet particularly with calcium rich foods. If you have falls, or dizziness seek medical advice. Make sure your vision and hearing are OK – have them checked if you have any doubts. If your mobility has been reduced by illness or simply age consider some activity classes at your local leisure centre or asking your doctor about physiotherapy. When you see your GP make sure your medication is reviewed – are all your tablets necessary? Might they be causing more risk than benefit? Do you have sore feet? A chiropodist may be able to help. Home may well be where the heart is but it is also the place where the falls are too. How good is the lighting, especially where there are trip hazards or stairs? Bathrooms are very unforgiving places to fall – make sure you can get in and out safely. Perhaps a rail, perhaps a bath lift. Are any floors slippery? Is your footwear good? Do you have a dog or cat that likes to be by your feet? How visible are they? Can you hear where they are – the AgeUK site mentions collars with bells? We could go on but perhaps the most important message is to think about the issue. I concentrated on elderly falls because, sadly, they can be a fatal trigger and a significant proportion are preventable. More information can be found on www.ageuk.org who can also be contacted on 0800 055 6112 (which is free). Steven Hawking said: “There are too many accidents that can befall life on a single planet” – perhaps we can reduce the number a little?

Left: Inside the kiln Top to bottom: The Hoffman kiln The adjacent meadow The tramway St. Agatha’s tower The view from Llanymynech Rocks

Rambles with a camera Tales of Hoffmann

with walker, photographer and artist Graham ‘Grum’ Mitchell I am sure that everyone has noticed the unusual square chimney on your left as you approach Llanymynech. But how many people have actually visited this incredible site? Built to process the lime extracted from the quarries at the top of the hill, the kiln with its 42.5m chimney is an impressive structure. Built in 1899 and worked until 1914, its working life was very short. This type of kiln is fascinating and designed to continually burn the lime, chamber by chamber. Patented by German Friedrich Hoffmann for brickmaking in 1858, this is one of only three remaining in the country. The dark cavernous structure is fully accessible, much to the delight of small children, and one can imagine the awful conditions the labourers worked in. The site was extensively renovated between 2006 and 2009. As well as the kiln the stables survive, along with remnants of tramway. If you explore further you can discover many other industrial relics. The canal and the disused railway track are a short distance away. As well as the industrial buildings, nature thrives here. The surrounding meadows are full of insects. There are plenty of butterflies, and dragonflies can be spotted down by the canal. The site is popular with the local buzzards. One likes to sit on the top of the chimney surveying his territory. Make sure you look for him. He looks like Nelson on his column. If you are feeling fit, you can combine the walk with a trip to Llanymynech Hill just over the A483 (the footpaths are well signposted), or you could visit the attractive church of St Agatha in the village. The church was built in 1844 in the Romanesque style. Interestingly the border between England and Wales runs down the middle of Llanymynech High Street. The West side is in Wales and the East in England. A small parking area is available off the A483 on the left (going south) just before the canal bridge in Llanymynech, but you can access the site from a number of directions. Oswestry life | 57

Book review

A New Map of Love Poor George Baxter, he’s just lost his wife of 26 years. With his dog Monty at his side, he sits and wonders if he will ever find love again. Pondering on his marriage, and his infidelity towards the end of Win’s life, he reflects on whether he ever did indeed spend 26 years in a loveless marriage. He asks is love different to lust.

George and Win just ambled by year after year. Seemingly happy with their lot, George now wants more and unwittingly falls into a relationship with the curvy and sweet Sylvia. How did he manage to find himself engaged and on the cusp of marrying?

There are also a few moral dilemmas which the book throws into the mix. As the reader, you can decide were your sympathy lies. A delightful book, littered with humour from the start, I am sure if you add this to your collection, you will not be disappointed.

Clocking up the smiles Journalist, car enthusiast and new dad Richard Jones takes the Kia Stonic for a test drive with baby Isabelle Our latest ‘daddy-daughter adventure’ saw Isabelle and I spend an afternoon at Chirk Castle where we had a Stonic-ing good time! Ok, so my pun isn’t the greatest but our day out was, while the Kia Stonic (get it now?) I drove to the beautiful 13th century castle was the perfect car for jaunt over the border. Based on the platform of the latest Rio supermini, the Stonic is Kia’s first entry into the ever expanding small SUV segment and already this sporty, smart and confident vehicle is proving a huge hit with buyers. Having driven it for the week, it is easy to see why! It is a handsome vehicle. With contrasting roof options and a choice of 17-inch wheels it will appeal to the majority, although in our family its biggest claim to fame will be that it is the car that taught Belle her second colour. Daddy’s car, as it was known, is now red in the same way the sky is blue, the cows go moo and Grandpa calls his stock in by shouting ‘hope’. Thankfully my every day car is also red so it’s not too confusing, but what my own car doesn’t have that the Stonic has in abundance is ‘attitude’ – which I mean in a very good way! The three-cylinder 998cc petrol unit I had on test was incredibly responsive. As we meandered our way through Shropshire and into Chirk the Stonic felt nippy and alert, yet comfortable and easy to drive. It’s by no means a hot- hatch but it still fed me with confidence as I swapped the busy A-roads for the narrower country lanes.

It’s by no means a hothatch but it still fed me with confidence as I swapped the busy A-roads for the narrower country lanes. The figures are good too. Prices starts from £16,540 while the 118bhp engine will do 0-60mpg in less than 10 seconds, while giving you 56.5mpg on the combined cycle. Practically it isn’t quite a spacious as some of the cars I have tested in the same segment. The legroom in the back leaves a bit to be desired, but as we only need room for a toddler and her car seat it wasn’t a problem for us. On the plus side the boot had ample room for everything, including her stroller, a picnic, the obligatory baby bag and a few toys. Once at Chirk Castle we had a lovely day exploring the colourful outdoors. In fact, we never actually made it inside the castle as the sun was shining and Belle just wanted to run around on the giant lawns and get dirty in the chippings that form the gravel paths that run through the beautiful gardens. It was while sitting on the lawn with my baguette and cheese that I got thinking more about the Stonic and, if I was in the market for a B-segment SUV, would I buy one? It is always a difficult question to answer because every car has its pros and cons, but in this case I

think I would. I love how the exterior looks ‘high end’ without being overly funky, it is enjoyable to drive and importantly for me (when not with Belle) there is room in the boot for my golf clubs. What it also has, and this always seals the deal for me when it comes to any Kia, is a seven year/100,000 mile warranty. For me that more than puts the icing on the cake, it puts the Tonic in the Stonic!

Test drive the Kia Stonic at Furrows Kia, Whittington Road, Oswestry. Call 01691 888935 to find out more.

Nostalgia

Down memory lane OSWESTRY BOYS & GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL Before the advent of comprehensive education Oswestry boasted two high schools and two secondary moderns. In 1979 the High Schools were merged to form Fitzalan Comprehensive School and the Modern Schools merged as Croeswylan. The two schools merged in 1988 to become The Marches, and in its early days operated from several sites. After a major development of the Morda Road campus, they began operating from that single site in 1993. Prior to the Education Act of 1902, secondary education was very much for the privileged classes and, in the main, on a fee-paying basis. Oswestry boasted many small private schools as well as, of course, Oswestry School itself. The new act made it the duty of local authorities to provide universal secondary education for children between the ages of 10 and 13 (raised to 14 in 1918). Oswestry Boys High School was founded in 1914 on the Holbache Road site pictured. The site was further developed over the next 30 years to include a science and dining hall block and further classroom buildings. Famous former pupils include World Cup winner Alan Ball, England cricketer Andy Lloyd and TV presenter Frank Bough. The Girls High School dates back even further to 1893 and, unlike its male equivalent, also catered for boarders with the Oakhurst halls 64

LAST WORD Craig Marston of Ke-Design Where do you live? Oswestry- in the town centre. Have you always lived locally? No, I grew up in Oswestry then moved away when I went to Uni. I’ve lived in Huddersfield, Leeds, London (twice) and Hong Kong. What schools/college/Uni did you attend? Middleton Road / Beech Grove, then Fitzalan before the merge to become the Marches, my A Levels were at North Shropshire College (hazy days) and then I studied Architecture at the University of Huddersfield. What first attracted you to architectural design? Trips to London as a kid, I was always interested in the buildings, and I was always drawing. I enjoyed Art and CDT (Craft Design & Technology) in school- solving a brief and developing a solution. When did you decide to start your own business? It didn’t cross my mind when working for big architectural firms in the city or Hong Kong, but when I moved back to Oswestry I needed a new challenge. I looked about and thought there was an opportunity for a fresh design approach. How’s that going? Tell us about some exciting projects you’ve been working on… Going well thank you. We are 66

| Oswestry life

starting to work with local developer Primoris, they realise that good design adds value. We’ve designed and got planning for some modern houses for them. We’ve had lots of interest and comments. Also, Ke-design exhibited at the Homebuilding & Renovating Show and Build It Live, we have picked up some interesting self builds and renovations plus we are working with a developer in Cheshire, creating new house types for them. Where does the name ‘ke’ design come from? Funny you ask that - I’ve only just found out people think it’s because of my nickname- Keegan. Coming up with a company name can be hard - I didn’t want Craig Marston Architectural Services. Ke is short for ‘key’, the keystone is the wedgeshaped stone at the top of the arch, the most important stone that gives it strength. All design is ‘key’. What do you enjoy doing to unwind in your spare time? Going to gigs - love live music. Not sure it helps to unwind as it’s usually a late night in Manchester on a school night. I also enjoy researching funky interiors of bars and restaurantscombined with my love of good food. What are some of your favourite hang-outs in Oswestry? I enjoy the food and vibe of Wednesday’s Cafe.

What are your thoughts on the mixed architecture in Oswestry? Do you have a favourite building? Oswestry has some nice historic buildings but lost a lot in the 1960s. There is certainly an opportunity for regeneration of the town centre - public spaces, surfacing, street furniture. I volunteer my time to advise on the Townscape & Transport forum. It’s frustrating that things move at such a slow pace though. What does the future hold for Ke-Design? Having set up Ke-design not long after moving back to Oswestry in the recession, with no client base or contacts, it has been continued growth. With the TV programmes people are taking more interest in design and the aesthetics and are coming to Ke-design for that. We want to manage growth correctly to maintain the level of service and design quality. With the workload an extra pair of hands wouldn’t go amiss. Finally, what’s the best thing about living in Oswestry? Having my family nearby.

Find out more about Ke-design by visiting http://www.ke-design.co.uk/ or call Craig on 01691 656964.
