wind storms. Local industry experts fear it could reach a crisis level similar to that of the North Island drought earlier this year, as the dry weather begins to decimate crops and force dairy farmers to delve into sup-

plementary feed.

The mythical dragon Smaug, the star of the second instalment of Sir Peter Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy, will be taking to the skies – on the side of an Air New Zealand plane. The airline unveiled the Boeing 777-300 aircraft, with the 54-metre dragon emblazoned on both sides, in Auckland yesterday morning. The aircraft headed to Los Angeles to arrive in time for the world premiere of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. It’s the second Hobbitthemed Boeing 777-300 in Air New Zealand’s fleet.

Cathedral cleared for demolition Demolition of the Christ Church Cathedral has been given the green light, following a judgement from the Supreme Court dismissing an appeal against an earlier decision legally enabling its destruction.

Yesterday’s judgement brings an end to months of legal wrangling between campaigners hoping to save the gothic-style church and custodians of the cathedral - the Church Property Trustees.

The judgement acknowledged the circumstances giving rise to the application for leave to appeal were of “great national importance” to the citizens of Christchurch.

“That importance arises from the history, function, and iconic nature of the cathedral.

“However, in this case, nothing that has been raised on behalf of the applicant reaches the threshold of showing that the decision of the courts below may be in error,” the judgement stated.

Earlier this year, the Church Property Trustees, released three design options for a future cathedral.

It included restoration, a timber replacement, or a contemporary design - which the church said it preferred.

The first burglary was reported on Friday after a Princes Street address was broken into on Thursday. That came before a car was broken into about 5pm Friday on East Street where an iPhone and

iPad were taken.

A Clark Street house was then broken into on Saturday but it is believed nothing has been taken at this stage.

Early Sunday a Tinwald business was broken into but the activated alarm forced the offenders to flee.

Firefighters fill breach Firefighters in Northland are increasingly attending medical callouts as St John struggles to cope with growing demand. With the festive season expected to put more strain on paramedics, the brigade has asked the public to deal with minor injuries themselves or wait to see their GPs. For some volunteer fire stations such as Whangarei Heads, requests for medical assistance make up 60 per cent of their total callouts. - APNZ

Sapovirus confirmed One positive result for sapovirus has been confirmed at Gisborne Hospital after last week’s gastro outbreak. Tairawhiti District Health medical officer of health Dr Geoffrey Cramp said further results were needed but at this stage the result indicated sapovirus was the cause. Sapovirus is a diarrhoeal gastroenteritis similar to norovirus, but milder. Results were negative for norovirus, he said.

Sexually assaulted A teenager has been sexually assaulted by two men in a Hastings park. Police said the 14-year-old girl was walking through Cornwall Park with a friend at 8.30pm on Sunday when they parted company and the victim continued alone. Shortly after this the victim was accosted by two men and taken against her will to a secluded part of the park where she was assaulted, police said.

Mid Canterbury volunteers will get together over a cuppa this Thursday as part of International Volunteers’ Day. Volunteering Mid and South Canterbury have planned an appreciation afternoon tea to thank volunteers for their time and efforts.

There are hundreds of volunteers working throughout Mid Canterbury.

Sharing Experiences and Everyday Skills (SEEDS) vol-

unteer Tania King has been volunteering for two years since moving to Ashburton.

Among the many benefits of volunteering she enjoys meeting new people and teaching those who want to learn.

The service provides support to parents wanting help and confidence in any aspect of their life.

These can include getting budget advice, improving their cooking skills, grocery shopping or help getting babies to sleep.

“Getting to meet new people,

teaching people what they want to learn … I really like seeing them when it just clicks”.

Mrs King, a mother of five and relief milker/calf rearer has no plans to stop volunteering and is happy to continue her supporting role.

“I can fit it in,” she said.

Volunteering Mid and South Canterbury co-ordinator Lyndal Watt said the afternoon tea was an informal thank you.

At the close of registrations there were 26 volunteers from “quite a few different organisations” booked into attend.

Mid Canterbury farmers fear early drought From P1 Federated Farmers Mid Canterbury grain and seed spokesman David Clark said since the storms, there had been minimal rain and recent rainfall was nowhere near enough at such a vital stage of the season.

“It’s a dry growing season and those crops under irrigators that aren’t working yet are really suffering.

“There’s yield being decimated on some crops,” he said.

In brief

Mr Clark was disappointed initial timelines and promises over when irrigators would be repaired were unrealistic, as many arable farmers “continued to maintain their crops as though they were going to be irrigated” through November and December.

Federated Farmers Mid Canterbury chairman Chris Allen said many farmers were being forced to “think outside of the box” to get their irrigators up

and running. Irrigator parts are being imported from overseas for the mass repair, and he said some farmers had air freighted components from overseas, proving a quicker alternative to shipping freight.

Rakaia dairy farmer and Federated Farmers Mid Canterbury vice-president Jessie Chan-Dorman was one of those farmers.

She said it was vital her centre pivots were restored soon

after the storms as her pasture growth became stunted and she was forced to distribute supplementary feed among her dairy herd.

Mr Briggs said his irrigation company had been working hard to communicate with farmers about when they could expect to have irrigators repaired.

He had already brought over technicians from South Africa to bolster repair crew numbers.

Tachikawa workers have been told they will get a payout before Christmas - although it won’t be the full amount. Receivers have told First Union they will receive an initial payment of 43 cents in the dollar before Christmas, and a further payout early in the New Year. Tachikawa Forest Products was placed into receivership in October, affecting more than 120 workers.

Turangi blaze At least one firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion after battling a property blaze in the central North Island yesterday. Emergency services were alerted to the blaze on Kepa Rd in Turangi at 1.30pm, and “it was well involved when we got there”, said Fire Service shift manager Megan Ruru.

Spate of flat tyres Masterton police are investigating a spate of flat car tyres in the area which they say are likely to have been caused by someone purposely dropping Z nails on roads. Tyre repair businesses have dealt with 27 punctures in recent weeks involving Z nails - a type of two-spike nail used for securing floor joists.

Dead woman named The name of a 35-year-old woman found floating in Wellington Harbour on Saturday has been released. She was Renee Anne Hudson, Wellington police said.

Ms Hudson’s body was found by a member of the public in the water near the East by West ferry terminal on the Wellington waterfront around 8pm. The matter has been referred to the Coroner.

Authorities claim epidemic over

Health authorities claim Ashburton’s hepatitis A epidemic is over.

With what started in five infected people in April, health authorities struggled to contain the outbreak which led to 28 confirmed cases - five of those hospitalised by the potentially deadly virus.

But yesterday, Canterbury

medical officer of health Dr Alistair Humphrey said he was confident the outbreak had ended with no confirmed cases since August 28.

It comes after the seventh and final free mass vaccination clinic held at Hampstead School last week by Community and Public Health for one to four year olds – the age group believed to be largely responsible for the spread of hepatitis A. Mr Humphrey said that took

the total number of immunised toddlers to 1145.

“It looks like the combined efforts of the community have beaten this serious disease,” Dr Humphrey said. “We have vaccinated more than 70 per cent of children aged between one and four in the Ashburton district.

“Effectively we now have what we call ‘herd immunity’ among Ashburton preschoolers, which means that the chain of infection has been broken and

hepatitis A can no longer spread through, or from, the preschool community.”

He said it would provide peace of mind for the rest of the country, as many Ashburtonians go on holiday during the summer months.

He praised schools and early childhood centres for taking up handwashing campaigns and Ashburton food handling businesses for vaccinating staff. It is an important victory for health

authorities as hepatitis A outbreaks have been known to last more than two years.

Ashburton Baptist Early Learning Centre manager Lorraine Bennet welcomed the announcement, saying it was not a surprise after the sheer number of vaccinations.

She said her centre had become more vigilant with handwashing and that was likely to continue in early childhood centres.

Summer jobs and university await Ashburton College’s 2013 leavers who rounded off their final NCEA exams yesterday.

The college held its final end of year tests with a small cohort of pupils sitting Horticultural and Agricultural Science, Japanese and Classics scholarships.

Josh Heney, who completed his fifth and final exam yesterday, said it was a bitter-sweet moment walking out the school gate for the last time, but he was excited with what lay ahead.

“I’ll be working at New World and doing a bit of berry picking before I head off to Lincoln university ... so there will still be a few more exams to come,” the 18-year-old said.

After a challenging Level 3 Japanese exam yesterday, Matt Arnold, 18, said it was great the exams were finally over.

“I’m off to Otago University next year to do surveying so I’ll be looking forward to that now,” he said.

Year 13 pupils would round off their school year with a school leavers’ dinner at the Hotel Ashburton on Sunday.

Ashburton College NCEA liaison Mary Buckland said the exam period had gone smoothly at college this year, and she was happy with how it went.

More than 143,000 pupils from across New Zealand sat exams and now a team of 1750 markers, including teachers from Ashburton College, are set to work until results are released online mid-January.

Derived grades’ requests up

Ashburton College has seen a spike in the number of pupils seeking derived grades for their end of year NCEA examinations.

A derived grade means a pupil’s final marks will be based on practice examinations they sat during the year, and are available to those who, for an approved reason, are not able to turn up to their exams or who feel their performance or preparation was sub-par.

Ashburton College NCEA liaison Mary Buckland said up to 25 pupils had applied for derived grades as the college held its final end-of-year-exam yesterday.

That number has been exacerbated by candidates sitting the Level 1 German exam who were all given the option of a derived grade after an exam botch up that saw almost the entire exam mistakenly written in German.

“Without the German pupils, I would say we are up to 20 now and last year at this stage it was way less, probably about half that,” Ms Buckland said.

Ms Buckland could not pin down a

reason as to why there was an influx, with pupils mainly presenting doctor’s certificates for illness or having tragedies within the family.

Applications for a derived grade will be sent to the New Zealand Qualification Authority (NZQA) by Ashburton College by Friday, Ms Buckland said.

NZQA said derived grades were based on “standard specific evidence” such as school practice exams earlier in the year or an end of topic test.

Ms Buckland said schools often drove home the importance of performing well in the practice exams, and the situation some college pupils found themselves in this year reinforced that.

NZAQ deputy chief executive Richard Thornton said those sitting the Level 1 German exam would be awarded the better of their derived or actual exam grade, but “early indications from marking show pupils have performed well”.

NZQA said approved derived grade applications submitted by the school will appear on pupils results notice when they are released mid-January.

The qualifications authority will inform pupils via letter if their application is denied.

Sales to foreigners ‘minuscule’

Foreign ownership of Mid Canterbury farms is increasing, but it still only accounts for a small percentage of total sales, a local rural consultant says.

A Rakaia farm owned by corporate dairy farmers Willy and Jeanet Leferink sold to Italian pasta barons the Barilla family for $25 million last week, creating a new record at about $61,000/ha.

Property Brokers rural consultant Paul Cunneen, who sold the property, said the publicity surrounding foreign ownership of property created a “wrong impression” – in reality it only

accounted for a minuscule number of sales.

“There is some foreign investment in dairy syndicates though,” he said.

The 413ha Rakaia property was signed up in February, and the purchasers Guido, Luca, Paola and Emanuela Barilla then had to satisfy the criteria of the Overseas Investment Office for the sale to proceed.

This is standard procedure for all such prospective purchasers for land areas over two hectares.

Mr Cunneen said the criteria generally revolved around the proposed land use, the introduction of new technology, benefits to the local community

and such like. And the Barilla family ticked all the boxes.

In fact they embrace the recently introduced water and nutrient management requirements.

“They’re right on board with that, and have plans to reduce nutrient run-off enabled by further treatment of effluent,” Mr Cunneen said.

“They see it as not necessarily a farming or agricultural initiative but a whole community thing. They want to increase efficiency and the quality of water right through – improving irrigation and effluent systems, investing in research and development and developing new technology.”

While the Barillas do not intend to live in New Zealand, they were keen to invest in its image, and find Kiwis good to do business with. They considered Canadian and Australian options but decided there was less volatility in the New Zealand dairy industry, Mr Cunneen said.

Before any land is sold into foreign ownership, it must be advertised locally.

“It’s not a foregone conclusion,” Mr Cunneen said. “When a conditional agreement has been signed it must be advertised for 90 days; if any Kiwi wants to provide a better offer or conditions, the vendor is at liberty to take it.”

Students put car to test in competition

By Teuila FuaTai A student-built “supercar” which reaches 100km/h in under four seconds will compete in an international design competition in Australia next week.

The car, built by 13 Canterbury University mechanical engineering students in their final year, has been undergoing tests at the Wigram Air Force Museum in Christchurch.

Final tests on the car, which was shipped to Melbourne last week for the Formula Society of Automotive Engineers Australasia design competition on December 12, “went as good as we hoped”, university spokesman Bruce Robertson said.

Ten students and two staff will travel to the event. Six students will drive in various events with other team members providing technical and logistical support.

The events include an endurance race, autocross race and acceleration test.

Large scrub fire Firefighters in Wellington are trying to bring a large scrub fire under control in Hutt Valley. Ten appliances were on the scene and had been battling the flames since 7.45pm. The large blaze was above houses in Lower Hutt but was not threatening them, Fire Service spokesman David Miekle said.

Local residents were concerned the fire was encroaching on homes. “Hills on fire in Hutt! Hope doesn’t burn too much. Too close to the house,” Rachel Murch said in a tweet.

False alarm The Fire Service has stood down its search for a light plane, reportedly missing near Auckland’s Muriwai Beach. Police were called about 7.30pm last night after a plane was believed to be in trouble and seeking somewhere to land.

Ten fire appliances were sent to the area and residents reported numerous emergency vehicles in the area. However there has been no sign of a plane and the Fire Service now believes it was a false alarm.

Not guilty pleas Two men charged with the murder of Wellington man Alonsio Iafeta Matalasi entered not guilty pleas at the High court in Wellington yesterday. Dillin Pakai, 19, and Shane Pierre Harrison, 43, were charged with Mr Matalasi’s murder after a fatal shooting at a block of flats in the Hutt Valley in August.

They are due to stand trial next year.

A pair of pink children’s gumboots were the first to go missing then a few weeks later two pairs of new sandshoes vanished followed soon after by Ms Cheesman’s jandals.

When the first pair of shoes went missing she thought

the neighbours’ kids might have borrowed them but was stumped when they continued to disappear.

“I actually did think I was going loopy,” she said.

She was glad to have solved the mystery of the vanishing shoes and was no longer instructing her children to leave their shoes outside the door.

Drowned pair named The father and daughter who died in Lake Tarawera, in Rotorua yesterday have been named as 40-year-old Zoujie Cai and his 6-year-old daughter Zexuan Cai from Auckland. Mr Cai and Zexuan died ofter their kayak tipped into Lake Tarawera on Sunday morning.

ACC cuts confirmed ACC Minister Judith Collins has confirmed $387 million worth of ACC levy cuts from April next year.

Poverty-stricken children, a typhoon-torn country and the environment are all targets of Ashburton Borough’s plans to make positive change in the world.

The school is one of 16 in New Zealand doing its part for the world under the UNESCO Associated Schools Network, which sees schools act as “navigators for peace and agents for positive change”.

Recently, the school trekked to Christchurch for a symposium, presenting the initiatives they have undertaken this year.

Ashburton Borough pupils were also left inspired, hearing the trials and tribulations of Student Volunteer Army co-founder Sam Pemberton on his role which began in the wake of the Christchurch earthquakes.

The symposium, with other associated schools, coincided with the 60th anniversary of the UNESCO Associated Schools Network which now encompasses 9700 educational institutes across 180 countries.

National Standards’ Wife charged with murder focus ‘too narrow’

Schools are now inadvertently losing “those magic teaching moments” because of National Standards, Mid Canterbury Principals’ Association president Neil Simons says.

His comments come in response to a report

by Research, Analysis and Insight into National Standards (Rains) which analysed how six schools from around the country fared with National Standards.

It found some subjects were being overlooked due to an increased focus on reading, writing and maths.

Mr Simons said because the National Standards were “high-stakes data” it meant schools were naturally narrowing their curriculum to ensure their results met the standards set by the Government.

“I think it just happens, because of the real pressure put on people we are losing the spontaneity, those magic teaching moments,” he said.

Mr Simons pointed to subjects such as social sciences, physical education and technology that may be suffering.

“It’s because the data is high-stakes, it will kill off creativity and entrepreneurship.”

Other issues highlighted by the Rains report were teachers feeling overwhelmed and overloaded with work and pupils feeling bad about not meeting standards - despite making progress.

Mr Simons said it was important schools kept on top of pupil progress.

The report’s leader Martin Thrupp said National Standards were too dominant and there needed to be a change in policy to free teachers from being preoccupied with National Standards assessing.

A month after Helen Milner allegedly fatally poisoned her husband a new man had moved into the family home, a court has heard.

Yesterday, the murder trial of the 50-year-old office administrator began at the High Court in Christchurch. She denied two charges of attempted murder and a charge of murder.

The court heard that Milner was determined to kill off her second husband Phil Nisbet, 47, and cash in her $250,000 life insurance pay-out.

She plotted the best way to do it, the Crown alleges, asking friends for views on poisoning methods, and even offered to pay $20,000 for a hit man to get Mr Nisbet out of the picture.

After two failed attempts to kill him a month earlier, she made sure on May 4, 2009 that she finished him off, the Crown alleges.

It claimed in court yesterday that when Milner most probably crushed up to 50 tablets of anti-histamine Phenergan into her husband’s food, she laid the killer blow with a pillow over his face.

When Mr Nisbet was found dead in bed in May 2009, police originally ruled he had taken his own life.

However after a coroner raised doubts over the death Milner became a major suspect.

The trial, before Justice David Gendall, continues.

Declining water quality is not the only casualty of intensive farming practices in Mid Canterbury and further afield, conservation group Forest & Bird says.

Three St John staff are preparing to bare their scalps to raise money for children with cancer.

Fulltime ambulance officer Frith Chamberlain and volunteers Kerry McKee Bowdler and Shane Hurst hope to raise more than $500 to support the cause by shaving off their hair this Thursday night.

So far they have raised over $300 on their fundraise-online website.

Ms Chamberlain wanted to support the Child Cancer Foundation but has no personal history with child cancer, just a desire to help.

By shaving their hair, the ambulance officers are supporting children with cancer and their families.

More than three children a week in New Zealand are diagnosed with cancer.

“For me the children are the most important. (Kerry and Shane) thought it was a good cause,” she said.

Eleven New Zealand victims are set to benefit from a $99 million settlement with the distributor of a morning sickness drug which caused birth defects in thousands of babies worldwide.

Thalidomide distributor Diageo yesterday agreed to the settlement with more than 100 Australian and New Zealand thalidomide claimants. The settlement was announced in the Supreme Court of Victoria.

It was the result of two class actions against Grunenthal, the German inventor and manufacturer of thalidomide, and the UK Distillers companies which distributed the drug.

One of the lawyers representing the victims, Michael Magazanik, said the settlement would benefit those who had never received compensation.

“We’ve been litigating for a while and we’ve compiled a compelling case against both companies. For its own reasons, and it should be applauded, Diageo has decided to recognise its legal and moral responsibility to these people.”

Rangitata MP Jo Goodhew has taken a hit in this year’s transTasman performance ratings for New Zealand’s members of Parliament.

After consistently receiving a rating of 5, Mrs Goodhew has now dropped to a 4 with the trans-Tasman team saying that while she had handled minor delegated health issues well her work for the most part had been earnest, solid and boring.

The annual ratings are provided by a group of editors and analysts from the Main Report Group.

fer some excuse for what they saw as an unspectacular year for Mrs Goodhew, saying she had

been handed some deadly, dull portfolios. She should, however, have had more to say on women’s affairs and had completely missed the gender pay gap.

She shared the lowest rating for ministers inside and outside cabinet with Nathan Guy and Craig Foss.

The drop in rankings, however, has not fazed Mrs Goodhew.

“These rankings are a bit of a distraction at the end of the year. I look at them and think, am I getting on with my job and getting good feedback in my electorate?

“I am and I’m happy to be flying under the radar,” she said.

Mrs Goodhew admitted that her portfolios – minister for the

community and voluntary sector, senior citizens and women’s affairs and associate minister of health and primary industries – might be portfolios that weren’t high profile and that did not attract attention, but said she was “fine with that”.

For her, work as an MP was as much about getting it right in her own electorate as it was making headines nationally, she said.

“When the rankings come out each year, if you actually used them to judge your performance you might be concerned but I don’t do this. I feel it’s been a good year in both my portfolios and the electorate.”

The heroes amongst us Coen Lammers EDITOR

T

he New Zealand Bravery Awards are an inspiration to all of us and many of us wonder how we would react in a life and death emergency.

A number of New Zealand heroes were yesterday honoured for their selfless act of bravery in which they put themselves at risk to save other Kiwis’ lives.

Most of them did not think of the potential dangers when confronting an armed offender or running towards a burning car.

We all tend to believe that we would do the same thing if that situation arose, but the sad reality is that most of us won’t. Most will simply freeze or choose self-preservation over heroism.

And there’s nothing wrong with that.

I was unfortunate enough to witness all the different reactions first-hand while The Press building in Christchurch collapsed around us in the February earthquake.

Some screamed, some froze, some ran, while others took charge or started saving others.

Some people ran home to check on their families and others instantly left town. Some stayed behind until they were sure that everyone was accounted for, while others stoically continued their reporting roles as if they were not part of the disaster.

What struck me in Christchurch was the total lack of blame among survivors. No-one seemed to have any hard feelings towards anyone for running away or looking after their own families first.

You simply do what you have to do and there is no right or wrong, but many still battle with a nasty sense of guilt over what they did, or did not do, that particular day in 2011.

Sadly there is not always a fairytale ending to heroic acts.

Just think of the number of drowning victims who perish each year while trying to save others in distress.

When the heroism ends in another grieving family, you have to wonder whether the risks were worth it.

Thankfully, there are enough foolish people among us to take insane risks and get away with it. And we honour them with a bravery award.

YOUR VIEW Second bridge It was obvious that Mr Urquhart was shocked and stunned to be taken out at the 11th hour.

To be informed that he may possibly have a pecuniary or conflict of interest. To be informed he could possibly be taken to court. Rubbish. I have some knowledge of local Government legislation and I would say he has not got a conflict of interest.

I would also say a challenge would not happen and if in the very unlikely situation it did happen I would stand up in court and win.

Can a new member not have an opinion prior to being elected? Certainly he can. Just as sitting members had an opinion prior to election and voted accordingly.

Council invites and encourages groups to be formed to give their views to help the decision making.

Recent examples: the sports

It was stated that last week’s meeting was democracy in progress. The meeting was hijacked. This is local politics at its worst.

There was an opportunity to inform the community as they worked through that process – rather as previously so much of it behind closed doors. So many questions still not answered to the public.

The motion was not about delaying the building of a new bridge. It was about ensuring that all the information was available to the new council and community so that we could move forward together.

n the wake of Dr Wright’s dairy farming-focused water report, interest.co.nz’s Bernard Hickey wrote that it has stuck less a pin into dairying than set off a “neutron bomb”.

While nitrogen bomb seems more apt, Mr Hickey added dairying, “is a Faustian bargain with four legs, a tail and whole lot of cud-chewing”. Describing what farmers like me do is like a pact with the devil doesn’t seem very kind.

Mr Hickey has asked me why dairying should be allowed to expand when the science isn’t there to deal with all of our nutrients.

It’s a good question. I guess the answer is why we drive cars and fly in aircraft when the science doesn’t deal with all of the emissions or waste created; Let alone the mountain of waste going into landfill.

If we waited on the science to deal with every eventuality then we’d never get out of bed in the morning. Come to think of it, we wouldn’t have a bed to get out of.

Yes we’ve got issues with nitrogen, but that shouldn’t mask the progress we’re making alongside some towns and cities on water quality when it comes to visual clarity, phosphorus, E.Coli and ammonia.

In most of the water quality battles, the Ministry for the Environment says we are winning.

So should nitrogen and a model automatically get us the economic red card?

Especially when our economy is utterly dependent upon exports, whether that’s a block of cheese or a Chinese tourist.

This is proven by the New Zealand Institute for Economic Research’s bullish outlook for 2014 and reinforced by new export statistics. These exports fund the science which is helping us develop solutions. In my book that’s environmental sweat equity.

dairy exports surged by an incredible 84.7 per cent, followed by logs (26.2 per cent), red meat (9.4 per cent), fish (5.7 per cent) and wine (3.2 per cent).

In the year to October 2013, dairy exports amounted to a staggering $12.1 billion – 4.6 per cent up on 2012.

We are also starting to see changes in our major exported goods as the economy rebalances to what we’re good at, rather than what some would like it to be.

It means “preparations of cereals, flour, and starch” is likely to break into the top 10 exports next year at the expense of “aluminium and aluminium articles”. Close behind those two comes “casein and caseinates”.

What would help our nonprimary and primary exporters alike are new markets and

deeper relationships with the ones we have.

In the past year and in spite of red meat hold-ups and a well publicised food false alarm, our exports to China in the year to October grew to $8.87 billion.

While Australia remains our number one export destination it is ‘just’ hanging in there; China is ‘a mere’ $310 million behind it and is set to become our leading export market sometime next year.

While China is fantastic and we have so much more to do, we need to broaden our trade relationships to avoid putting all of our eggs into a UK-like basket again.

Our trade with the countries of Asia, ASEAN and Apec is growing and they give us some awesome options. Just imagine what a Free Trade Agreement

with India would mean. A broad export front is why we need that Trans Pacific Partnership but only if agricultural and food product tariffs, as well as non-tariff barriers, are given the big heave-ho.

The prize of global trade liberalisation towards the end of this century is put at US$100 trillion.

This is too large to comprehend, so Danish Professor, Bjørn Lomborg, instead says it “…would do thousands of times more good than timid feel-good policies that result from fear-mongering. But that requires abandoning an antigrowth mentality and using our enormous potential to create a brighter future”.

Probe into killer train crash US experts have begun to probe how and why a New York City commuter train derailed over the holiday weekend, killing four, injuring more than 60, and nearly plunging into a freezing river.

The train may have been speeding when it veered off the rails in the Bronx borough at around 7.20am (2320 AEDT) yesterday as it headed south to Grand Central Station in Manhattan.

The New York Fire Department said four people were killed, 11 others seriously injured, and another 56 suffered minor wounds.

Some passengers were “impaled” by debris as train cars flew into the air, officials said, while others had to be cut free from tangled metal.

“People were screaming,” Joel Zaritsky told The New York Times.

“I found myself thrown to the other side of the train.”

Many survivors had broken limbs or injuries to their heads or necks.

Some were led away with bloodied faces.

Investigators combed the scene and announced that a “multi-disciplinary team” would probe everything from the condition of the tracks to the signalling systems and the brakes.

“Our mission is to understand not just what happened, but why it happened, with the intent of preventing it from happening again,” Earl Weener, a National Transportation Safety Board official, told reporters.

Weener said the train’s event recorder - similar to an airplane’s “black box” - had been recovered.

whether or not the brakes were applied,” New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said in earlier remarks to broadcaster MSNBC. Speaking alongside Weener, Cuomo said a crane was on its way to the scene to right the derailed train cars.

That, according to Weener, was to check for any more victims and stop fuel from leaking from the locomotive.

Investigators will interview the train crew and conductor in the next days, Weener said.

He expected investigators to remain on site for up to 10 days.

The Times, citing a senior

city official who spoke on the condition of anonymity, reported that the train operator told first responders the brakes had failed.

The account however had not been confirmed.

At least one passenger said the train was speeding as it took a curve on a downward slope leading into Spuyten Duyvil station, just north of Manhattan.

Before reaching the station, the train’s seven cars derailed and flew across a grassy bank separating the railroad from the Hudson and Harlem rivers, which meet at that point.

The front car came to rest only a few feet from the water, and two cars toppled on their side.

Three of the dead were thrown from the train, police said, and divers searched the rivers in case other passengers were hurled into the frigid water.

Officials said there were some 120 passengers aboard the train when it flew off the tracks.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority identified the four, who ranged in age from 35 to 59. Two were men, two were women, and all were New Yorkarea US citizens.

Marine Biologist Amy Smoothey completed a forensic analysis of Mr Young’s bites and concluded yesterday a tiger shark was responsible.

It followed the death of Queensland surfer Chris Boyd, 35, who was mauled at Gracetown in Western Australia.

Mr Neff said he found policy responses to shark attacks did not reduce the risk - only the perception of risk.

Cameron brokers deals British Prime Minister David Cameron oversaw the signing of agreements in areas from legal assistance to space exploration during an official visit to China that replaces one earlier scrapped

Cameron was leading Britain’s largest-ever trade mission to China, with six government ministers and representatives from business, universities and the health care sector on a threeday visit that started yesterday.

Cameron was expected to voice support for a deal to free up trade between China and the European Union, China’s largest trading partner. Such a deal could be worth up to STG1.8 billion ($A3.25 billion) a year to the British economy, according to the UK government.

Chinese moon rover China has launched its first moon rover mission, the latest step in an ambitious space program seen as a symbol of its rising global stature.

The Chang’e-3 mission is named for the goddess of the moon in Chinese mythology and the rover vehicle is called Yutu, or Jade Rabbit, after her pet. The Long March-3B carrier rocket - China’s largest such vehicle - blasted off yesterday, live coverage on state broadcaster CCTV showed. As it shot into the night sky, mission observers could be heard reporting at regular intervals that events were proceeding “normally”. The probe is due to land on the moon in mid-December to explore its surface and look for natural resources. It is the world’s third lunar rover mission.

They were quizzed by unitholders over what was seen as a conflict between paying a high milk price to farmers and trying to lift earnings, with one investor observing Fonterra had a five-year trend of little real increase in earnings.

Spierings said last summer’s drought sabotaged the company’s target for earnings growth and the key was to shift volumes of product into high-value categories.

Another unitholder railed against the environmental practices of some farmers, including those that still allow dairy

effluent to reach waterways, and quizzed Spierings about a case where a dairy farm worker was convicted for breaking the tails of cows, saying that sort of news would damage New Zealand’s reputation in Europe.

Spierings said Fonterra had “some work ahead of us on sustainability and animal welfare” though this should be tackled through the terms of its supply agreement with farmers and that such issues should first be discussed within the Fonterra “family” rather than through punitive measures that the unitholder suggested.

Spierings said the high milk price was a reflection of “huge demand” for whole milk powder and other products used to calculate the milk price, while non-milk price products such as cheese and casein had lagged behind, widening the gap between Fonterra’s raw material costs and returns from its value-added products.

Fonterra chief executive Theo Spierings says months of talks with Danone over losses from the whey protein concentrate recall have failed to reach a commercial solution, suggesting the issue may end up in the courts.

Danone put the cost of the Fonterra WPC 80 recall at 350 million euros when it announced its third-quarter results last month.

Spierings was questioned yesterday at the Fonterra Shareholders’ Fund annual meeting in Auckland about whether a $14 million contingent liability in Fonterra’s accounts would be sufficient.

“I have heard the numbers, seen other numbers in letters to us,” Spierings said. “We’ve worked on a commercial solution very, very hard for months” such as agreeing to security of supply. “That appears to be a route that is not working out.”

Still, should Fonterra’s contract with Danone be tested in the courts, it will show “we have no liability in the contract.”

Last month Danone, the world’s largest yoghurt maker, cut its sales and profitability targets for 2013, citing the recall. Sales of baby food fell 8.6 per cent in the third quarter as a result of the recall, Reuters reported the French company as saying.

Itoham is a Japan-based company mainly engaged in manufacturing and selling processed meat products and meat.

Stubble Inflated prices ease burning on FAR agenda Stubble burning will be on the agenda at the Foundation for Arable Research (FAR) field day at Chertsey tomorrow.

FAR’s director of research and extension, Nick Poole, is setting up several plots to demonstrate just why stubble burning is important in Canterbury, especially to growers of small seed crops.

“One of the issues addressed in the stubble burning review revolved around the differences between crops and cropping systems in Canterbury, where stubble burning, particularly cereal stubble burning, is a valued rotational tool, and other cereal growing nations such as the UK and US, where the practice is no longer carried out. This is the issue we will be demonstrating at ARIA (Arable Research in Action),” he said.

FAR has set up a range of plots to demonstrate just how much straw is produced by cereal crops in New Zealand compared with Australia and also a range of treatments including stubble only, stubble and straw,

Subdued bidding at charity calf sale A good line-up of calves met with subdued bidding at the annual IHC donated calf and Ashburton sale last week.

Three local schools – Wakanui, Longbeach and Mt Somers-Springburn – also benefited from donated calf-sales.

A total of just over 700 calves were

presented for sale, with close to half of the yarding going to North Island buyers.

A line of quality white face bull calves fetched the top price of $440, 150kg friesian bull calves made $380, 100kg-115kg made $300 and crossbred calves at similar weights earned $100 less.

PGG Wrightson dairy representative Victor Schikker said prices were down on last year, but in line with market expectations.

MARKET REPORT LAMB

Overseas pricing for lamb continues to firm with slight increases in the key overseas pricing indicators.

European shoulder cuts have shown the most improvement, with legs slower to show further improvement in pricing.

European importers have so far been accepting of these small price rises to secure supply, whilst at the same time emphasising the need to keep to sustainable price levels. Prices are likely to flatten out in January, with some more upwards pressure possible in the lead up to Easter from February.

As prices have risen in recent months, so has competition for forequarters between buyers in the Middle East and China. It has reached a point at which importers in the Middle East have let significant volumes go to China. At what is essentially a higher price, somewhat testing the market.

BEEF

The firmer trend in the US imported lean beef market continued last week, with prices for both 95CL bull and 90CL cow climbing higher. In contrast, US domestic prices are slightly weaker.

It is raising some concern in the market that there has been little positive movement in the US domestic 90CL price recently, even though the cow slaughter has been well below average for many months.

Prices are now at a point that makes it economical for US processors to freeze domestic 90CL meat rather than buying imported product, therefore reducing demand for NZ beef.

This is occurring, however, volumes are restricted due to limited freezing capacity. Importers remain in two minds as to the best approach for the coming season and this is reflected in their hesitancy to commit to large volumes.

VENISON

Venison is now shifting to a frozen production schedule due to sea freight for the European game season ending early November.

Reports from Europe suggest reasonable demand for chilled venison, and some last minute product has been air freighted, though frozen sales are still a bit sluggish.

Export statistics for October show slightly more chilled venison exports than during October 2012. However, for the year to October the volume of chilled venison exported was 0.2 per cent less than 2012. But the total value was up 3 per cent.

There was 6 per cent more frozen venison shipped in the year to October though total export value was down 3 per cent. This is due to a reduction values after a backlog built up late in the European summer, when extended hot weather tempered demand for venison. Overall this is just a 1 per cent reduction in value year-on-year.

There has been good production throughout the chilled production season, though as has been typical for the past few years, hinds have made up the majority of the kill. This indicates a further reduction in the breeding herd which is likely to reduce venison production in the coming seasons.

It was indeed a pleasure to attend the annual meeting of Rural Women NZ in Wellington.

The AGM was officially opened by Rural Women NZ patron, Her Excellency, Lady Janine Mateparae, who said her decision to take on the patron’s role was made easier by the organisation’s commitment to provide a voice for rural women and rural families.

Guest speaker, Prime Minister John Key, outlined the significant differences between our urban and rural communities and the key question is how we make sure those differences and issues are understood by everybody. He cited broadband access, the volatility of weather that farmers must cope with and schooling in rural areas as key challenges.

Liz Evans has completed her threeyear term as our national president, the newly elected president Wendy McGowan was welcomed. Her message: “I will build on our organisations’ goals and aspirations to be dynamic, vibrant, leading innovative and visible at all levels.”

Kerry Maw, our councillor for region two, has been appointment as vice president, we all wish Kerry well in her appointment.

The Y Front Up For Prostate Cancer appeal has come to an end, a tremendous result with a cheque being presented for $26,550 to the NZ Prostate Cancer Foundation. Many thanks to everyone who has taken part in this awareness and fundraising campaign.

Rural Women New Zealand has played a leading role at the recent launch of the International Year of Family Farming 2014 to coincide with the global launch at the UN headquarters in New York.

Anama Rural Women members have supported young Mt Somers woman Ailie Jaine in her Pink Pilates fund-raising bike ride to help cancer patients become more mobile.

They also supported Zonta’s display on November 29 to raise awareness of the number of family violence incidents in Ashburton.

Guest speaker at the November meeting was Knox Hampton who gave an enthralling insight into the contrasts of life in the African country of Malawi.

Members met at Alisa’s home for our November meeting, we welcomed Jeanette who was our guest speaker.

Final arrangements were made for the Link Meeting which was held recently in the Tinwald School Assembly Hall, this will be the last meeting for 2013.

Our guest speaker will be Roger Scammell speaking on assistance in Samoa.

Members were updated on the health of Stuart Rattray and it decided to provide help for them, thanks to Mary who will co-ordinate this.

Jeanette spoke on her trip to India, flying to Delhi, the correct vaccinations is so important, along with medical insurance.

While travelling the tour company provided bottled water and they had to watch what they ate, but of course their hotel food was safe.

Staff was mostly male in the hotels, they travelled in their own mini bus with a guide, driver and co-driver who sorted the bags and kept tabs on everyone.

The city had a lot of rubbish lying around and the noise was extreme.

They flew Delhi down to Chennai to the ACCW Conference.

Lynnford members are reminded of our mystery trip on Thursday, meeting at Mary’s 9.45am, and cars will leave 10am sharp.

A small group of members met as usual at the St Paul’s Church lounge in Oxford Street, in early November.

Our motto for the month was: “Friendship is a priceless gift that can’t be bought or sold. Its value is far greater than mountains made of gold.”

Among reports and correspondence, members were pleased to note that 11 members of RWNZ had been successful in recent local elections around New Zealand, meaning the rural voice would continue to be heard in decision making.

Over the past month, members have contributed to surveys on the aged care sector, family violence, school transport assistance, prioritisation of telecommunications technology, and the vulnerable children bill.

Members also learned easy tips for computers, and received updates on rural mail services and leptospirosis research.

Following the business session, we heard the highlights of tours of the North Island and India from members who had been travelling recently.

Our next meeting will be a Christmas lunch tomorrow.

November Mystery Bus trip is always a must do event on our rural women calendar.

We were not disappointed with our day out, the weather was fine and warm, great company and a very varied interesting programme was arranged by Marg and Shona for the 28 participants.

Our first stop of the day was to the Midland Seeds trial farm, what an interested experience, those of us who pass the gate of this farm at Winchmore had no idea of what lay behind the pine hedges.

We were treated to a real learning curve regarding trials of various types of plants grown for seed that is sent all over the world and the knowledge of Dr Jo Townshend who showed us around was impressive. This was followed by a welcome morning tea provided by our hosts Sarah Green and Annie Cuthbertson. On to the lovely garden of Lois and Peter Etheridge which was full of spring splendour.

We also visited Tash Sim’s glass studio which was very interesting, the process of making the glass objects, jewellery and lamps etc was demonstrated and explained by Tash, many took the opportunity of some Christmas shopping.

Members are reminded of our Christmas morning tea meeting which will be held at Maureen’s home on December 18, a small gift to exchange.

Also remind your neighbours of the district Christmas function at the hall on the December 22. All Winchmore District families are most welcome and encouraged to attend.

2 9 another layer of custard, smooth the top and spoon over a layer of cream. (The trifles can be covered with plastic wrap and placed in the refrigerator for several hours at this stage.)

■ Before serving, decorate the tops of the trifles with the reserved berries and cherries and, if desired, decorate with toffee.

■ Make the toffee by placing the sugar and 2T water into a small saucepan. Place over a medium

heat, rocking the pan from side to side occasionally to dissolve the sugar. Do not stir.

■ Once the sugar has dissolved, increase the heat and let the syrup bubble until it is a golden colour. Remove the pan from the heat and allow the bubbles to subside, then carefully place a spoon into the toffee and drizzle it over the top of the berries.

There’s often trou

T

he pedestrian bridge spanning Ashburton’s rail yard is one of the last remnants of the town’s original railway equipment, a remnant that is well used every day, especially during school time, as part of the footpath network. It now comes under the control of the Ashburton District Council.

It also has historic significance, being one of the last railway pedestrian overbridges in the country, and it is believed to be the last remaining of its type of construction.

However, the early story of the bridge was fraught with a long-running controversy that puts some of today’s arguments to shame.

When Ashburton was first laid out in 1863 a railway was well in the future, but provision was made for it to pass through the centre of the future town, with all the east-west streets having rail crossings.

In August, 1874, construction of a railway from Christchurch to Ashburton was completed.

Nine months later construction was completed to Ealing, although it would be more than three years before trains could run all the way from Christchurch to Dunedin. About the time that happened construction of branch lines in the Ashburton District was under way, linking Methven to Rakaia and Tinwald to Springburn and Mount Somers.

All this activity obviously required some infrastructure in Ashburton – a goods shed, a railway station and an engine shed.

A photo of the first Ashburton railway station, opposite Cameron Street, about 1904, shows very few sidings. The two posts to the left appear to mark the entrance to the yard for horse-drawn vehicles unloading wagons.

The site for this was chosen with what the Guardian chose to call “characteristic colonial clumsiness”, but with what was probably an effort to have it as close as possible to the town’s developing commercial area. It was sited between Cameron and Wills streets, effectively closing two level crossings at those two streets. The station was small, and over the next 40 or so years was added to in many directions, incorporating a number of small outbuildings.

Initially the station’s site and the closed level crossings were not too much of a concern.

Photos taken in the early 1900s show only the main line and one or two sidings, with a considerable amount of unused land between the rails and West Street.

People continued to do what they had done since pre-rail days and cross the tracks wherever they wanted.

Within a very few years the situation changed. By 1907 there were sidings right to West Street and the railways department was starting to prosecute people for crossing the tracks, but when they did, according to the Guardian, the JPs hearing the cases “failed to administer the law and did not enter convictions”. The practice continued, but many people wanted a more convenient way of getting to the other side of town.

In July 1907 Charles Nicoll obtained 342 signatures on a petition to the Minister of Railways asking for a subway near Wills or Cameron streets or, failing that, an overbridge. He pointed out that the station and associated buildings had closed off every rail crossing between Havelock and Aitken streets.

While, today, that 600-metre distance may not seem great, and all those crossings and more

remain closed, in 1907 most people walked or rode a horse and distance mattered.

Putting the subway versus bridge options to the minister also put them in front of the public, starting a long, bitter dispute between factions within the town. It was subway versus bridge, Cameron Street versus Wills Street, council versus minister. The minister was stubborn, offering only a bridge, saying the £10,000 cost of a subway was too high.

Then a third option appeared – build a new station further north, near Peter Street. The price was too rich for the minister, but eventually he relented a little, saying a subway, now estimated to cost only £1500, was possible if the council paid the difference. The council refused – they wanted the new station and were concerned that would be delayed if they accepted either

of the other options. The mayor, Henry Davis, heard the premier, Sir Joseph Ward, was to travel through the town by train, so he went to Hinds, boarded the train and lobbied the premier all the way to Ashburton – without luck.

Then, in September 1909 things began to come to a head.

William Kingston was prosecuted for walking across the tracks. The mayor tried to have the charges withdrawn but the minister refused. The mayor called a “public indignation meeting”, attended by the local MP, William Nosworthy. Editorials took the Government’s side on the prosecution, but asked railways to stop blocking crossings as far south as Burnett Street while shunting. The new station proposal received a boost, but again the minister refused to budge. Another petition, organised by John Gobbe,

gathered 2000 names. However, in the face of an intransigent attitude from the Government public opinion gradually moved away from building a new station to the subway option, the price of which had now reduced mysteriously from £10,000 to about £1800. If the council paid the £750 difference between the bridge and a subway the town could have a subway, the Minister of Railways said. The council refused, pointing out some of the dangers associated with a subway.

Another option appeared. A bridge would be acceptable to many provided it had ramps rather than steps. Eventually council and public opinion decided to accept a bridge with ramps, linking the two parts of Wills Street. The mayor met with the minister when he was passing through Ashburton in February 1910 and received his agreement

to this plan, but by April the minister reneged, favouring a subway with the council paying part. The premier was called in again.

Debate over the various options spluttered on, editorial comment still favouring a new station on a new site. It referred to “the utter unfitness of the station offices as places for responsible hard-working public servants to do the business of the country in. It is highly probable a private employer would be prosecuted if he kept his men working under such conditions”.

Eventually, the bridge was built, but not until March, 1911, and the town didn’t get quite what it expected. Instead of being opposite Wills Street it was opposite Cameron Street, instead of having ramps it had steps. But the public used it, and used it well.

However, the bridge was not

to last. In June, 1917, a new station was opened, spanning the blocks from Peter to Aitken streets, causing the Aitken Street level crossing to be blocked.

The old station was demolished and the 1911 bridge was now in the wrong place. A new bridge, this time with ramps, was built opposite Wills Street with a third ramp extending on to the station platform. That is the bridge still there in 2013, although with the third ramp removed.

Complaints about the closing of the Aitken Street crossing, which led to the main domain entrance, resulted in the original bridge, complete with its steps, being moved to the north end of the station, opposite Aitken Street, where it survived there until the late 1970s before being demolished, along with the adjacent engine sheds and railway water tanks.

Currie-Ussher combo Methven’s Braden Currie and Richard Ussher have taken out the Mark Webber Challenge adventure race in Tasmania. The New Zealand pairing of the current and former Coast to Coast champions led the race from day one and although they did not cross the finish line first on the race’s final day on Saturday, they maintained their big advantage in the overall standings.

The Currie-Ussher combo clocked in at 19 hours 59:00 minutes over the five days of stage racing which was more than two hours and 42 minutes ahead of second placed Tasmanians Alex Hunt and Mark Hinder. Currie, 27, and Ussher, 37, hit the lead early on the opening day and conquered the Tasmanian wilderness, tearing to a runaway lead that proved impossible to bridge on the final day around Hobart.

Hayward does best Local riders had limited success at the ESNZ 3 star South Island Jumping Championships in Waimate on Sunday. Finding the primary tennis champs Harry Dargue lines up a backhand return during the Mid Canterbury Primary School Tennis Championships at the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre on Sunday. Harry Dargue took out the year 3/4 boys’ round robin, while there was also a year 3/4 novice boys’ competition which had Luke Slee and Murphy Dargue win their respective pools. Amelia Mckeown won all her matches in the year 3/4 girls’ round robin, including edging out Felicity Pye 6-5. Ashleigh Allred emerged the victor in the girls’ year 5/6 round robin with four comfortable wins while in the boys draw top seed Edwin Dargue beat second seed Jarrad Hill 9-4. Top seed James Watt overcame second seed Flynn Ness 9-6 in the year 7/8 boys and Tessa MCann followed suit in the girls as the number one outgunned second seed Erin Connelly-Whyte 9-1.

Tough day for U17s Mid Canterbury had a disappointing start to their under 17 cricket tournament in Timaru yesterday. Canterbury Country rolled Mid Canterbury for 84 and made light work of the chase for a nine-wicket win.

Mid Canterbury scored quickly but also lost wickets at a rapid rate to be 73/6 after just 16.4 overs. James Southby, 19, and Tom Dudley, 11, had made a solid start but when Dudley went with the score on 32, and Mid Canterbury then lost their remaining nine wickets for 52 runs, with Ryan Bell, 14, the only other batsman to reach double figures.

Canterbury Country then chased the target down in 15.3 overs for the loss of just one wicket, taken by Deon Biggs.

Good week for Brown Wellington golfer Mark Brown has ended the season with a strong performance, finishing in a share of sixth place at the Australian Open on Sunday. The 38-year-old from the Shandon Golf Club fired rounds of 75, 70, 66 and 69 at the Royal Sydney Golf Club. By Tom Williams Wayne Rooney scored two goals as Manchester United twice had to come from behind to draw 2-2 at Tottenham Hotspur in an entertaining Premier League encounter yesterday.

Spurs led twice, through a Kyle Walker free-kick and then a stunning strike from Sandro, but Rooney hit back on each occasion to extend United’s unbeaten record to 12 games in all competitions.

David Moyes’s side were thankful to leave White Hart Lane with a point, but having also drawn 2-2 at Cardiff City last weekend, this was another missed opportunity to gain ground on the top four in the premier league.

Celtic have bounced back from their mid-week European elimination to book their place in the fifth round of the Scottish Cup with a recordequalling 7-0 defeat of Hearts at Tynecastle. The Hoops scored five in a blistering first half display as they took their disappointment of exiting Europe out on the Jambos. Kris Commons got the scoring started early with a third minute strike before grabbing a second in the 21st minute. Celtic Scott Brown tapped in the third before Joe Ledley finished off a good move to make it 4-0 and Mikel Lustig’s superb long range strike completed the first half scoring. The Hoops inevitably eased up in the second half but there was still time for Commons to complete his hat-trick from the penalty spot before Brown’s deflected shot sealed a 7-0 win that was the perfect way to answer their critics as manager Neil Lennon celebrated his 200th game in charge.

Comeback win for Milan AC Milan have rallied to win 3-1 at 10-man strugglers Catania to improve their lowly standing in the Italian Serie A. Mario Balotelli botched an easy header on the hour but drilled home a free-kick three minutes later to reverse the score after Riccardo Montolivo had volleyed to level an opener from Lucas Castro. The Sicily hosts had Panagiotis Tachtsidis red-carded for a rude foul on Balotelli on 64 minutes and missed a couple of chances before Kaka secured the win nine minutes from time. Milan sit ninth on 17 points from 14 games as Catania remained in the drop zone with nine.

Hull stuns Liverpool Hull have put a dent in Liverpool’s Premier League title ambitions with a shock 3-1 win over the Merseysiders at the KC Stadium on what started out as a torrid day for the Tigers. Liverpool kickedoff in second place but this result dropped them to third on goal difference behind Chelsea. Hull took a 20th minute lead when Jake Livermore, on loan from Tottenham Hotspur, scored his first Premier League goal when a 25-yard shot deflected off Martin Skrtel and went over the head of Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet. But Liverpool were level seven minutes later when England captain Steven Gerrad swept in a 20-yard free-kick.

However Hull - who started the match 10 points adrift of Liverpool - put the result beyond doubt with two goals inside the final 20 minutes.

Metro too strong for Mid Canterbury Mid Canterbury Primary’s Richard Turpie runs in to bowl against Christchurch Metro at the Ashburton Domain on Sunday. Mid Canterbury delivered a top bowling effort to dismiss Metro for 113, led

by Liam McCormack’s 4/22 with James Forbes 2/12 and Lachie Mee 2/15. Metro then responded with a sharp bowling effort of their own, picking up ealy wickets before dismissing the hosts for 72.

Archie Redfern made 18 while Will Smith was 19 not out. The Mid Canterbury Year 7 and the year 5-6 teams also suffered losses to Metro. The primary side face Canterbury Country on December 15 as they continue to build towards the South Island Tournament, being held in Gore in January.

Dave Knight found the line strongest to claim victory in the Tinwald Cycling Club’s 48km handicap event around the Grahams Road block on Sunday.

Knight jumped early to create a small gap that he held to the line, with the next 11 riders finishing within two seconds of each other.

It was Mid Canterbury Heartland rugby coach Glenn Moore who secured second in the tight finish, with Pam Harcourt charging into third.

Allan Johns continued his early season improvements with a hard-fought fourth, and Lucy Kirwan rounded out the top five.

Scratch rider Nathan Tew set the fastest time covering the course in 67.46 minutes with co-markers Tony Ward and Scott Albon the next best times.

The juniors rode a 16km handicap race where Ben Sutton continued his success of late picking up the win and fastest time, riding the distance in 29.46 minutes.

Jenna Borthwick rode a superb race to take second while Oliver Davidson was rewarded for some solid rides over recent weeks to take third.

Caitlin Titheridge and Cameron Prattley filled the remaining top five spots.

Next week the club will contest a 50km handicap event around the Swamp Road block.

Controversial umpiring call upsets Black Sticks

BY DANA JOHANNSEN The Black Sticks are still to get on the board at the World League finals after a controversial umpiring decision in their second match against Argentina denied the New Zealand side a chance to level the score on fulltime yesterday.

The New Zealand side suf-

fered a 2-1 loss to the world No 1 team, producing a strong defensive effort to repel the waves of attack from the Argentines.

While they can be happy with a much-improved outing following their poor first-up loss to China the Black Sticks would have been disappointed not to come away with any points from the match having been awarded

two penalty corners in the final minute.

The second penalty corner attempt was ruled to have touched the body of Samantha Charlton, and Argentina awarded possession, but the Kiwis asked for a review from the television match official, with replays showing the ball did not touch Charlton.

But by that stage time was up

and the umpire signalled the end of the game.

New Zealand opened the scoring in the 21st minute with Anita Punt scoring, but it did not take long for Argentina to equalise, with Delfina Merino scoring a brilliant half-volley back-hand goal after catching a deflection off keeper Sally Rutherford.

The Black Sticks would have

still been happy to keep the score at 1-all at halftime, having defended five shots on goal, but then Merino adding her second goal.

The New Zealand side fought hard to get a goal back over the remainder of the second half, with their best opportunities coming from the late penalty corner attempts, before the clock proved their undoing.
