SPRING WONDERLAND

After a lean winter of snowfall on the Canterbury plains, residents around the foothills awoke on the first day of spring yesterday to a blanketing of the white stuff.

Heavy snowfalls in the early hours of the morning left roads precarious, schools closed and farmers out ensuring their stock were okay.

In Methven, the snow was met with enthusiasm, due to snow in the township usually meaning significant falls on Mt Hutt which will result in a longer skiing season.

That’s music to the ears of tourism operators, already struggling with no international visitors, especially with school holidays just around the corner.

Spring starts with snow

The Mid Canterbury Foothills welcomed heavy snow to the area on the first day of spring yesterday.

The MetService issued a heavy snow warning on Monday afternoon. Nevertheless, the unseasonal fall took many by surprise, following temperatures soaring to 20 degrees in Ashburton on Monday.

Residents woke to snow falling from about 6am, and it con-

tinued through the morning to about 11.30am.

About 10 centimetres fell in Methven, leaving the township looking like a winter wonderland at first light, but as temperatures warmed, the snow quickly melted from roads.

Methven business people were ecstatic at the late ski season fall for Mt Hutt, which received 30 centimetres by mid afternoon as snow continued to fall on the mountain.

It has been an up and down winter due to Covid-19 border closures, with a lack of interna-

tional tourists taking its toll.

Methven property manager Mark Jacobs, at Construction Nominees Limited, said Methven had been “resilient” in the face of the pandemic. Overseeing more than half of the CBD’s commercial tenancies, the company had dramatically slashed rents since lockdown before bringing them up gradually again.

“And we still have all our tenants,” Jacobs said.

Weekends had been busy in the town thanks to domestic tourism. But weekdays had been down on previous winters, with

no international ski teams or Australian school groups staying in the town, on top of the lack of international free travellers.

“It’s impacted revenue, but the town isn’t going to tip over,” he said.

Yesterday’s snow was fantastic as it would top up the skifield’s base, “which is pretty vital to town economics this time of year”.

Schools and preschools around the area were closed for the day due to the snow with many expecting to be open again this morning.

Intermediate breaking new ground

Change is in the wind at Ashburton Intermediate School with a new hub-style structure signalling the school as a leader in creating a collaborative working environment for Year 7 and 8 students.

Principal Brent Gray said he wanted to change classroom structure to create a new culture at the school, one where students from both age groups could build relationships and work together.

From next year, the school will be divided into four hubs, each with two Year 7 and two Year 8 classes.

For students that creates certainty around their class and their teachers for the two years they are at the school, he said as they

would remain in the same hub with the same cluster of teachers.

The new system will not be compulsory, initially, and families will be given the option heading into 2021, to be part of the hub system or to be in the single cell model of one teacher, one class.

“Part of this is driven by our rebuild, but another part is about establishing a culture in the school that is more nurturing and respectful of each other across Years 7 and 8 and to provide continuity with a group of teachers across both years,” Gray said.

Each hub will have a leader and a whanau leader and this also creates additional responsibility opportunities for staff.

The model was one that created greater learning flexibility for students, but with the confidence of knowing that they would be with their same hub

group for the two years they were at the school, he said.

Currently the new hub system is being trialled at the school with two classes working in the large library space and another two in a larger classroom.

Key to its success was having staff that worked well together, Gray said.

“Change always provides challenges, but to date, staff reactions have been really positive about the new model.”

Those in the current trial were enthusiastic about the model, he said.

“But there’s no doubt about it, they’re working their butts off because they want to see it succeed.”

The new structure would not impact on the amount of time allocated for technology or art and students identified as needing extra learning support would continue to have times for this allocated within their hub.

In brief Trapped driver freed A driver had to be assisted from their vehicle after crashing on Line Road in Lauriston. Emergency services were called to the scene at around 5.30am on Saturday. The Lauriston and Methven Volunteer Fire Brigades attended with Methven extricating the trapped driver. A police spokeswoman said a person was taken into custody initially, but they were never processed or charged.

East St trees need reprieve

East Street’s grand old oak trees have captivated Ashburton with twinkling fairy lights this winter, however, the trees need a reprieve.

So says tree expert Lyall Jemmett at Four Seasons Treecare Limited.

His company installed the lights, and he has been just as happy with the overall effect as everyone else.

“They do look cool. I don’t have an artistic bone in my body, but just to see that effect that’s come up is fantastic,” he said.

Nevertheless, Jemmett said

he had been surprised last week when reading a report on a meeting of the Ashburton District Council’s community services committee.

Councillors at the meeting recommended to keep the lights up for a whole year, citing how well-received the light project had been by the general public.

Jemmett said studies had shown artificial lighting could disrupt the cycle of deciduous trees at autumn, interfering with their leaf-losing process.

“They can get confused,” he said.

While the lighting hardware itself was not harmful to the trees, turning off the lights for a certain time could help the trees

retain their natural seasonal and daily cycles.

Jemmett believed the lights should be on for just a few months each year, rather than year-round. Perhaps they could be turned on to brighten up the town for the winter, when the trees are bare of leaves, and then turned off again until the festive season prior to Christmas.

The English oak trees along East Street were quite old after all, at over 80 years, and it would not be good to give them any additional stress, he said.

Expert Dr Cate Macinnis-Ng at the University of Auckland’s School of Biological Sciences agreed that the fairy lights could have some impact.

“Given the trees are beside a road, they are likely to be reasonably adapted to night-time light, but I would recommend intermittent checks by an arborist to check for signs of ill-health,” Dr Macinnis-Ng said.

English oak trees were reasonably tolerant to night-time light, but they could be vulnerable to additional stressors such as drought. And trees exposed to continuous light may keep their stomata open for longer during the night, increasing water loss and making the trees more vulnerable to drought, she said.

The community services committee’s recommendation will now be considered by the full council at its next meeting.

Cameras a bid to stop car burglaries

Mt Somers Walkway Society members are fed up with seeing the heartbreak caused by car burglaries of overnight trampers.

On average every few weeks, the Sharplin Falls carpark and the Woolshed Creek carpark are targeted by thieves who smash the windows of cars, unlock the door and take anything inside that may have some monetary value.

The society has ordered high-definition surveillance cameras.

Members, including Bryan Humm and Colin Bellamy, said they hoped this would be an effective tool in hunting down the criminal or criminals involved.

Humm spoke of a recent incident at Woolshed Creek where there were five cars smashed into overnight, with backpacks and other items taken.

The victims included one French couple who were in tears.

“It ruined their holiday,” Bellamy said.

“We try and encourage people up here to this wonderful place, and then that happens,” he said.

He said the Department of Conservation had a sign warning

of security cameras at Woolshed Creek, but this was not backed up with security cameras in the area full-time.

He was looking forward to the installation of the new high-definition cameras at both ends of the Mt Somers Track.

In order to access the popular track, trampers park their cars at either the Woolshed Creek carpark or the Sharplin Falls carpark.

They can stay overnight on the track, at either the Woolshed Creek Hut or Pinnacles Hut. Both carparks are decorated with piles of scattered glass, evidence of the criminal activity that takes place under the cover of darkness.

A police spokesperson said police encouraged people to remove valuables from vehicles.

“If you do need to leave items unattended, make sure they’re out of sight and your vehicle is locked. Also, park in busy, open and well-lit areas whenever possible.”

They urged anyone who is a victim of this type of crime or who has information about such thefts, to contact their local police immediately.

“The sooner we know about this the better chance we have of catching the offenders and preventing further crime,” they said.

Firefighters spent almost 24 hours putting out a vegetation fire in Wakanui at the weekend. At around 4.50pm on Saturday crews from the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade responded to a burn pile that had flared up on Fitzgerald Road. They required additional support first from the Pendarves and Rakaia tankers and then Methven and Willowby tankers as the fire front grew to 250m proceeding up a bank. The fire was brought under control at around 9pm with crews stationed on site overnight to monitor hot spots, with the last crew departing at 3.30pm on Sunday.

Car rolls on SH77 A vehicle rolled on Waimarama Road, State Highway 77, near Methven on Sunday morning.

Police received a report of a car rolling on SH77 at around 2.25am yesterday. No one was injured in the incident, a police spokeswoman said and there was no reason to believe alcohol was involved.

Lotto win in Tinwald Ashburton’s recent run of luck in Lotto continued on Saturday when one local ticket holder was one of 17 Lotto players to win $18,407 in Second Division. The winning ticket was purchased at Tinwald Supervalue. In the first division, one Auckland winner scooped $1m.

Powerball was not struck and has rolled over to tonight, where the jackpot will be $10 million.

Stolen signs The remainder of stolen election hoardings belonging to Labour’s Jo Luxton have been found at Lake Hood at the weekend.

Luxton had 11 signs stolen a week earlier from the Tinwald area, with only her campaign signs targeted. One turned up the next day, several were dumped at an address on McMurdo Street and the remainder were found at Lake Hood. Police are investigating the thefts and anyone with information can contact them on 105 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Smash and grab burglars are targeting Sharplin Falls carpark.

Black-billed gulls have decorated the Ashburton Art Gallery in an abstract expressionist style, but their work will soon be erased.

Ashburton District Council business support group manager Paul Brake said the council had engaged a specialist cleaner from Christchurch to look at the roof membrane and building exterior which would require cleaning.

Black-billed gulls congregated on the art gallery and surrounding homes last month, but following the installation of hawk kites they have moved on. “We continue to look at other methods of preventing congregation,” Brake said. In recent years the rare gulls have presented a nuisance to retailers as they congregate prior to nesting on the nearby Ashburton River.

Scouts make the garden grow

Gardens around Mid Canterbury are going to look great this spring thanks to the local scouting movement.

Zone leader Michelle Brown was really pleased how their annual fertiliser drive went.

She said the group bagged up and delivered a record 1560 bags of lime, in 10kg bags, and fertiliser in 5kg bags, on Saturday.

“The fundraiser is always well supported, but this year went well beyond previous years. The orders just kept rolling in.”

Brown wasn’t sure what to put the increase down to. Maybe the mild winter got people out in their gardens earlier, or during lockdown gardens were examined and thought about more, or maybe it comes down to the community wishing to support local causes more now than ever, she said.

“I also want to thank the community for the support shown to us during the year.”

Saturday was the official delivery day, but Brown said the drop-offs carried on into the week as more and more orders were placed.

Labelled a scout fundraiser, Brown said in reality scouts, cubs, adventureres, leaders and parents all teamed up together to make it happen.

“It was a brilliant effort by everybody and they all worked really hard. We even had keas out

Brown said this is the big fundraiser of the year, with the mon-

ey raised going to running the Mania-o-roto Scout Park and to off-set regional zone fees for parents.

“Mania-o-roto is a fabulous venue and we have a great band of volunteers that take care of it, but it is expensive to run.”

Hot pools groundwork begins

Tradesmen at Opuke Thermal Pools and Spa are on a steep learning curve as they embark on jobs they have never done before.

“We have never dug hot pools,” Jon Harmer, owner of Harmer Earthmoving, said.

“It’s a bit different to a swimming pool, there’s a bit more to it.”

Harmer is this week digging three metres down, leading

the charge into the imprint of an exciting network of pools at Methven’s $15 million Opuke project.

He said the work would precede the builders coming in to start laying blocks to build the pools from the bottom up.

As well as earthwork for the pools, there is a scenic lake and a complexity of pipework for water supplies, jets, filtration and sewerage.

Fellow worker on site is landscaper Dell Phillips.

He is also branching into

new ground as he contemplates the largest planting project he has ever done.

He has more than 3000 plants ready to go.

They will be set into natural groupings, with consideration given to height and aesthetics, framing, but not covering, the picturesque Southern Alps.

Opuke director James McKenzie said the hot pools construction was well under way, but much of the work was at ground level and below.

“It will be some months before we see things really come

up out of the ground because there’s so much in the ground,” he said.

Bradford’s was working on foundations for the main building, with formwork nearing completion.

The site’s big concrete pours would not be until mid to late October, for the building first, followed by the hot pools.

McKenzie met on site with Harmer and Phillips on Friday, discussing details for the entrance to the pools, with respect to landscaping, planting and water features.

Wakanui School is likely to have 12 places for Out of Zone enrolments in 2021.

All In Zone applications should also be made by this date to assist in determining the exact number of Out of Zone places.

Proposed split of combined BOT

The Ministry of Education (MOE) is considering a recommendation for Carew Peel Forest School to form its own board of trustees (BOT).

The school has had a combined BOT with Geraldine High School since July 2001.

In April, a consultation process began with the school communities proposing to split the combined board.

Following the consultation, the board made a decision to recommend to the ministry that the combined board be disbanded, and separate board of trustees be formed for each school.

“We have been supporting Geraldine High School and Carew Peel Forest School Combined Board of Trustees as they work through the process to consider a change to their combined board arrangements,” Ministry of Education deputy secretary sector enablement and support, Katrina

Casey, said.

“Following the completion of the board’s consultation process, they are now working on their formal request to the Minister of Education, which will include the community views from their consultation process.

“When we receive the board’s submission, we will prepare a paper for the minister’s decision, including a timeline for any new board elections, if required.

“We will ensure that any change to governance is supported following board elections should this be required.”

In a statement, the existing board thanked the Carew Peel Forest community for its engagement in the process and acknowledged “the genuine concerns and apprehensions” that were brought forward.

“The consultation also clearly demonstrated the passion and commitment the community has to the wellbeing of both schools, not to mention the wealth of capable and engaged community members,” the statement said.

The two former teachers have been at the forefront of the literacy battle and are now on the literacy committee of Altrusa.

Among many contributions to the community, the volunteer organisation has spent 46 years contributing to literacy in Ashburton’s primary and intermediate schools.

They see literacy as a crucial core skill and are getting behind Literacy Week which features World Literacy Day on September 8.

“It’s drawing people’s attention to the fact that we need to have children being able to read and

write, and encourage them to do that,” Bowman said.

“For parents to join them and read books together.”

Protheroe said that modelling was an important part of the process.

“Schools do a lot, but if the parents read it’s good for the children as they will model what they do, but if the parents don’t it’s harder going.”

New Zealand Army Band stepping out in Ashburton

It might not be as good as a sixweek stint performing in London during Buckingham Palace’s changing of the guard, but if you’re a musician, then any chance to perform is welcome.

Members of the New Zealand Army Band had a big year planned.

They were off to London, scheduled to perform in Fiji, but along came Covid-19 and performances were canned. Now they’re out of lockdown and on the back of a sell-out performance at the Christchurch Town Hall last month, they’re ready to hit the road.

That means they’re touring the provinces and for the first time in several years, they’re heading to Ashburton.

Band member and communications team member Georgia Hoy said the upcoming tour, New Zealand Army Band Live, was hugely exciting for members. And while losing its overseas engagements because of Covid-19 was

disappointing, it created a new opportunity to tour New Zealand, she said.

During the lockdown, the band kept busy by producing many online “bubble band” recordings, including an hour-long Anzac Day concert.

These weekly recordings were watched by more than two million viewers from all around the world.

“The New Zealand Army Band is often called on for events overseas but this year we are happy to be home and presenting concerts

all around New Zealand,” Hoy said.

The Ashburton performance will be a winner for the Ashburton Silver Band as it will be the recipient of 50 per cent of the event’s profits.

on September 18 will feature a mix of big band, classical and brass band music.

It will feature world-class vocal and instrumental soloists in a musical mix that will provide something for people of all ages, Hoy said.

Harira Lamb 350g Quality Mark lamb shoulder (or diced lamb shoulder) ½ t ground cumin ½ t smoked paprika ¼ t cayenne pepper 2 bay leaves Pared rind of ½ lemon 4 C Campbell’s Real Stock - Vegetable 400g can chopped tomatoes in juice ½ Clentils 1 onion, diced 1 carrot, diced To serve 2 handfuls fresh coriander leaves, chopped Lamb ■■ Cut lamb shoulder into 3cm pieces and place in a large saucepan with a dash of oil, ground cumin, paprika, cayenne pepper, bay leaves, lemon rind and vegetable stock.

■■ Place over a low heat and simmer, covered, until the lamb is tender, about an hour.

■■ Pour in 2 cups water, tomatoes, lentils, onion and carrot and simmer for a further 30 minutes until all is tender.

To serve ■■ Sprinkle with fresh coriander leaves and serve with warm crusty bread if you wish.

10 years on, how far have we come?

L

ater this week, on Friday to be precise, it will have been 10 years since the Canterbury ground started shaking. I don’t need to remind everyone of what those moments in the early hours of September 4 were like, you all lived through it and wondered what it might bring.

At the time, we couldn’t predict what would further unfold a few months down the track. Sure, science suggested we might get something similar at some point, but to the scale and magnitude of the following February, no one could have predicted.

It doesn’t feel like it’s been 10 years though, does it?

The memory of those initial moments will probably never leave any of us. We’ll remember exactly where we were, who we were with and what we did in those first moments of absolute panic.

Yet so much that has happened since then is fast becoming a distant memory.

Our entire landscape, and by our I mean Canterbury, was changed forever that day. It set the wheels in motion for the next 12-18 months of utter despair, emotions and at times anger.

You’d like to think we’ve advanced a lot, but in so many ways we haven’t.

Yes, we now acknowledge the need to know that a building we walk in is structurally sound and we are now more familiar than we like with the correct protocols should an earthquake strike, but there’s so much more still to be done.

Parts of our region are still showing the impact of that first quake and then those that followed it including the big one in February.

Their very core is shaky, for lack of a better term, and we continue to walk by without actually realising what might unfold if another one was to hit.

So, this week as we perhaps stop for a moment and think about those early moments that the ground started shaking, perhaps we should also think back and try and remember what we wished to see happen in the aftermath.

Then we can all properly judge whether or not we have made significant enough inroads into the arduous task of rebuilding a region in the wake of a natural disaster.

I’d expect the opinion to be divided.

YOUR VIEW A sign of the times In response to two letters you published from people who support the vandalism of election signs promoting our local MP, Jo Luxton.

I am surprised members of this community openly support crimes being committed.

Both Robyn Sim and Robert Spencer support the actions of the criminals who removed the signs. Why? While you may delight in the fact that someone has removed them, publicly writing letters of support and putting your name to them surely announces to the community that you enjoy

crimes being committed.

How would they feel if their front gardens were destroyed and people wrote in supporting the destruction because they did not like the look of their gardening efforts?

And don’t get me started that one of the authors who wrote a letter about theft is called Ro-

byn . . .

Library, civic centre makes progress

I

n exciting news this past week, you’ll have seen that a significant milestone has been reached with the new Ashburton Library & Civic Centre, and it is one that paves the way for the project to start moving from plans to reality.

Last week, councillors adopted the detailed designs for the facility which encompass everything from the layout on each floor, building materials, colour palettes and interior and exterior elements.

The detailed designs build on the concept plans that were adopted in August last year, and with these designs now approved, the council can now begin the construction tender process ready for construction to start in December.

This is hugely exciting progress for the facility, especially coming off the back of the $20 million that the Government has committed to the project from its shovel-ready project fund.

The Library & Civic Centre has been many years in the making to get this point, and the sign-off on its detailed designs finally gives residents their first chance

The marriage of the past and the future – the Baring Square church with its new administration wing and the district’s future, the soon to be built civic centre and library. to actually see what the facility and its range of features will look like.

You can now see how your new Library & Civic Centre will look and feel, right down to the way Pioneer Hall will be incorporated into the library space, how the small tiered-seated performance area will overlook the internal courtyard and how you will be able to access the council chambers on the first floor.

Along with the look and feel, accessibility has been an

important design consideration.

All entrances into the building (except the one into Pioneer Hall which we envisage will be used as an occasional controlled entrance for school groups) will be accessible. Movement between each floor level will be facilitated with accessible ramps and stairs, plus there will be accessible public street parking.

The best way to experience these designs is to watch the fly-through video that has been developed and is available on

the council website and YouTube channel.

In the video, you begin your journey in Baring Square East which reflects how we envisage people using the two spaces as a larger civic area.

Alongside the Library & Civic Centre project, the council is seeking to revamp Baring Square East so that the two spaces are more cohesive. Draft plans have been put together to rejuvenate the square, and the council is now asking for your

feedback.

Not everything has a happy ending H

‘Who knew there was such a thing? But one day it came to my attention a local piggy had been wandering out onto the road, due to her age and ailments.

months off her life expectancy, and chatter was, she would soundly be put to sleep a little ahead of her natural schedule.

But honestly, if that was me, I’d seriously want someone to step in and give me a little home for my final months.

So I stepped in, you’ll be pleased to know!

The farmer rolled his eyes, but we ploughed ahead with our plan to relocate the large,

chunky monkey to one of our paddocks for retirement bliss.

The problem with Kune Kune pigs is they appear to be a bit stubborn.

When we arrived with a trailer in tow and tried to coax the little old lady on to a ramp and into the trailer, well, she refused.

The farmer gently pushed Popcorn in the right direction, but no. The children tried, but nothing. We used food as a treat – surely that would work?

She was a pig afterall! But alas, still no.

So her lovely owner offered to walk her to our farm – she loved a good walk and we were only a few kilometres away. To begin with this all went very well, she trotted along in all her piggy glory, almost smiling, but then within a few hundred metres of her new home, Popcorn simply changed her mind and headed home again.

Sigh. This old lady really was not interested in coming to the paddock of paradise.

So here comes the not-sohappy ending, while Popcorn is still alive and well, as far as I

know, we decided to leave her put. The risk of putting her under too much stress could have caused a little piggy heart attack and I definitely don’t want that on my hands.

So, the not-so-wee Kune Kune is still on her own farm, but way back from the road now, and I’ve had to accept I just couldn’t save the world this time!

One remaining local case of M. bovis

Only one farm in New Zealand is currently confirmed as infected with the cattle disease mycoplasma bovis and it’s in Mid Canterbury.

The other 249 previous cases have all been cleared of the disease.

M. bovis programme northern South Island regional manager Caleb Ford said the remaining infected case was a beef property in the Ashburton District.

Of four properties under Notice of Direction restrictions in Canterbury, two were in the Ashburton district.

This marks a turnaround from autumn and winter last year when Mid Canterbury was the centre of the disease. More than 30 of the 250 confirmed cases of M. bovis have been on dairy and beef farms and lifestyle blocks in the district.

While active confirmed cases had dwindled to only one nationally in the last few months, a small number of new M. bovis cases is expected following spring testing, Ford said.

“We traditionally see an increase in the number of properties required to go under a Notice of Direction in spring as there are a higher number of detect results via bulk tank milk testing, and the animals experience increased stress during calving.

“The evidence so far indicates this trend will continue in 2020, but on a smaller scale. We ex-

pect that a small number of these properties will be confirmed infected over the coming months, however the total numbers will remain low,” Ford said.

In August, bulk tank milk samples from 8847 farms were screened nationally. The screening, which looks for M. bovis antibodies, returned 28 detect results. This was an initial screening test that indicated further onfarm investigation was required to determine if a farm had infected cattle.

“While it’s difficult to say how many new infected dairies will be identified through 2020 spring bulk milk screening – as this includes 2018 heifers entering the

milking platform for the first time – last year around 2 per cent were found to be infected.”

Bulk tank milk screening played an important role in looking for infection outside the tracing network. It would also play an important long-term role in gathering the evidence to declare freedom from M. bovis in New Zealand, Ford said.

Results from a national beef surveillance programme also provided an important indication that the disease was not widespread in New Zealand’s beef cattle population.

To date some 50,000 animals, from more than 1000 farms have had samples collected for testing and fewer than five farms have required further on-farm investigation.

M. bovis was first detected in New Zealand in July 2017, after a large number of cattle in a South Canterbury dairy herd began displaying symptoms of a novel disease.

Since then 158,024 cattle have been culled and $170.7 million paid in compensation to farmers in a bid to eradicate the disease.

While infected properties were initially concentrated in the South Island, particularly Canter-

bury and Southland, activity had since moved north with the biggest cluster of Notice of Direction properties now in Northland.

“When a property is confirmed infected, the animals moved from this property in the relevant time period are traced and movement controls placed on properties of risk.

“At the moment, this activity is mainly centred in the upper North Island,” Ford said.

“Just one infected animal has the ability to spread the disease widely. At this stage in our eradication effort it is vital farmers have good Nait records so we can track potentially infected cattle quickly to prevent the spread.”

Leading change in wool sector A renewed focus on stimulating consumer-led innovation will be brought to the strong wool sector with the establishment of the Strong Wool Action Group.

The group is a collaboration of representatives from across the primary sector who have come together to carry out the recommendations of the Wool Industry Project Action Group report, which was released in July this year.

The group’s chair Rob Hewett said the group would lead change in the sector by bringing a broad range of skills and consumer focus to the challenges facing strong wool.

The group comprises people representing existing companies in the wool sector, people with marketing and innovation expertise, as well as four red meat processing and marketing companies who have committed seed funding to the group, alongside funding from MPI. Woolgrower representatives include Kate Acland of Mt Somers Station in Mid Canterbury.

Additions to the group will be made in the future as capability requirements evolve.

“Success of strong wool underpins the sheep meat sector and we have a vested interest in the sector’s success, Hewett said.

“The red meat sector players saw this as an opportunity to help galvanise the strong wool sector. We want to provide stimulus to the value of the fifth quarter which includes wool, and non-meat products such as pelts, pharmaceuticals, and casings, and support our sheep farmers who need to see a lift in the profitability of their wool to ensure the ongoing viability of hill country farming in New Zealand.

“We will provide scale and impetus to ensure we help get meaningful change in the industry to influence the future of the sector.”

The Strong Wool Action Group will work on three key areas identified in the Wool Industry Project Action Group report over the coming months to develop a plan of action for the sector.

“We will re-establish some important industry good capability, bring in international consumer-focused thinking from outside the sector, and identify a basket of opportunities for investment that will create value – all recommendations from the report,” Hewett said.

“Since the loss of the wool levy, we have not had the structures or rigour around

improving capability within the sector.

This includes data capture and analysis so we can move beyond anecdotal evidence and identify sound opportunities for investment.

“Outside in thinking is a concept that the New Zealand agribusiness sector has been exposed to through the work of Stanford University marketing expert Baba Shiv as part of the NZTE supported Te Hono movement. It has been proven to stimulate innovation and help create products consumers value. We believe this will help the strong wool sector as it has for fine wool.

“We will look for commercial opportunities that industry players can invest in that are value creating. Wool is a high quality and versatile product, with sustainability attributes that can’t be ignored. The report showed the sector has been starved of the capital it needs to develop innovative consumer-led products and new categories, which are scalable for a global market.

“We expect to be able to identify consumer-led opportunities and support individual players in accessing the Ministry of Primary Industries’ existing funding pools, which includes taking part in an MPI workshop currently being organised to look at options for strong wool.

“The group intends to work with anyone in the sector as we work through this plan. And we welcome the opportunity to discuss our intentions for strong wool.

“The group contains a mix of industry continuity and outside thinking so that we can make change,” Hewett said.

The initial Strong Wool Action Group members include: Rob Hewett, Kate Acland, Paul Alston, Tony Balfour, David Ferrier, Craig Hickson, Andrew Morrison, Tom O’Sullivan, John Rodwell, Nadine Tunley, Peter Whiteman, Steve Williamson.

Bowlers converge for a good cause

The winter bowls season wrapped up officially on the weekend, and it did so in fine style with a full green of players taking to Allenton to compete in honour of a loyal servant of the game locally.

The tournament, held as a fundraiser to help stem some of the flow from the economic fall out of Covid-19 and the impact it’s had on attracting sponsorship to the sport of bowls, drew 64 players – with a number of others put on waiting list, should a space appear.

Held at the Allenton Bowling Club, the tournament was named in honour of long-serving local bowler, Ian Kaye, who played for the Rakaia Bowling Club and passed away a year ago.

A spokesperson for the tournament said it was pleasing to get such great interest from players, with many clubs fast approaching their opening days for Above – Jill Harris. Below – Barry Molloy. the summer season.

All seven clubs in Mid Canterbury were represented at the tournament which was held in a drawn fours tournament across Sunday afternoon.

Despite the special nature of the tournament, where camaraderie and raising some money was the main objective, there, as always, had to be winners.

Neil Atkinson from the Hinds Bowling Club skipped his side to success with Heather Goddall (Ashburton Bowling Club), Dave Jones (Rakaia Bowling Club) and Mark Tonks (Allenton Bowling Club) forming the winning side along him.

All in all an enjoyable day was had by all with the more serious bowling season set to get under way over the next month.

Dynamic duo selected for South

Ashburton indoor bowlers, Michael Lawson and Mat Bassett have been chosen to represent the Mainland in this year’s annual Inter-Island Test Match.

The duo were part of the two squads announced over the weekend for the clash in Christchurch on September 26.

Lawson, a record-holding member of the South Island team for most appearances, and a New Zealand representative, will captain the side as well.

It will be his 21st appearance for the South Island.

He will play three in the men’s fours side, with former Ashburton player and fellow New Zealand representative, Simon Thomas, skipping while Otago’s Brandon Williams and Daniel Sinclair are the second and the lead.

Bassett has also been a frequent figure in the South Island side, having made a number of appearances in recent years.

He was called back into the side last year for the first time since 2013.

He will play lead in a strong men’s triples team which features Otago’s David Webb and Gold-

en Bay and Motueka’s Hayden Warnes. Bassett has been in solid form, and produced decent bowls at the Young Guns tournament for players under the age of 30 recently.

Former Ashburton player, Jeremy Markham, went back-to-back

in the pairs title at the tournament in Hamilton combining with Waikato’s Teri Anderson on Sunday.

The South Island haven’t beaten by the North Island in the annual fixture since 2004, but in recent years have pushed close

with last year’s 25-23 scoreline seeing just one game difference between them.

Normally the North Island team would be touring the South Island for a week before the test match, but that was cancelled as

a result of Covid-19, so instead the two sides will both come in fresh before the battle.

Ashburton’s Rowena Mackenzie will also be a part of the South Island team, named as a women’s reserve.

Hampstead women a hit

Hampstead’s two first grade women’s teams made an impression in premier hockey on Friday.

Sitting in second spot, Hampstead Blue ran out to a comfortable 3-0 win over Wakanui in the first of the 1st grade women’s double header at the NBS Turf, which moves them within six competition points of league leaders Methven.

Meanwhile, the top-of-the-table Methven outfit was held to a 2-2 draw by third-placed Hampstead in what was only the third occurrence that the competition frontrunners had not clinched the maximum.

A club spokesperson said it was a great outcome for both club sides.

Hampstead Blue’s win – its sixth from 11 starts this season – came off the back of goals from Emily Armstrong, Sophie Watson and Sian Gerald.

It was a hard-fought duel in the later game where both sides defended grimly, especially in the final period where both lineups were searching for the winner.

Ashburton College’s 1st XI continued on their merry way in

the Just Hockey SSL Div 1 Boys’ league, beating St Andrew’s 2nd XI 3-1 on Friday.

The unbeaten side hold a four point lead at the top of the competition ahead of their meeting with Christ’s College’s 2nd XI on Friday.

The AshColl girls were edged 1-0 by Avonside Girls’ High in the division 2 girls’ competition, leaving the side in fourth spot on the ladder.

The side take on St Margaret’s College Red tonight at Nga Puna Wai from 5.05pm.

HOCKEY

Town v Country return for second week It was the turn of some older hockey talent at the weekend as Town and Country returned for a second week.

The NBS Turf hosted the annual fixtures on Sunday with Years 6 to 8 players in action.

It follows fixtures involving Years 3 to 5 which occurred on the previous Sunday.

Like the Kwik Sticks, Kiwi Sticks and Mini Sticks programmes, the Town and Country fixtures are non-competitive and no scores were kept for the games.

“It provides an opportunity for kids to play in their year group and mix with kids in other teams that they play against each week,” Mid Canterbury Hockey spokesman Andrew Mitchell said.

“It’s also great that we are able to offer this extra opportunity for our players while still at Covid Alert Level 2.”

Week in Sport – Three big talking points

orth v South More than two weeks without top level rugby and all of a sudden I’m jazzed for this encounter.

There are numerous reasons why anticipation now appears rife.

We were deprived of the perfect finale to Super Rugby Aotearoa last month, there is bound to be plenty mouthwatering match-ups on the field and with the ambiguous backdrop of a test programme which may, or may not go shead this year, this might be the last opportunity to

see the country’s playing creme in a concentrated format.

The bizarre thing is that this should be the window in which prospective All Blacks stake their claim.

Yet there is no concrete timeline or forecast to work with.

How these question marks manifest on the park during this game will be intriguing.

Covid-19 has taught us as sports fans that we undoubtedly take things for granted – how 2020 contrasts the previous years where professional rugby has been ubiquitous to a fault.

It is funny how those issues around selection criteria, no crowds seem kind of trivial now.

The Warriors Where did that come from?

As this year could not get any stranger, the Warriors – the club most affected by Covid-19 – is now two wins outside the top 8.

They are also now the only club outside the top half to be paying less than a $A1000 to win the premiership.

After the mecca of hitches, headaches and dramas, the side had no right to be giving a side like Newcastle a 30-point flogging.

Sure they are still a long way off entering the contender discussion among the likes of Penrith, the Roosters, Melbourne and Paramatta.

But if you compare the Warriors to the likes of the rabble that is Brisbane, it is fairly striking.

Much has been spoken about

Todd Payten and fair enough.

However the players should also be commended for knuckling down during their recent form spike, particularly talismanic skipper Roger Tuivasa-Scheck who re-found some vintage quality at the weekend.

Lionel Messi The ugly side of professional sport laid bare. Contracts, clauses and an absurd amount of money are the key factors as Lionel Messi’s fairytale tenure at Barcelona looks set for an unpleasant dissolution.

Barcelona’s recent 8-2 humiliation at the hands of Bayern Munich was seemingly the final straw, with Messi reportedly not a fan of the club’s direction under president Josip Bartomeu.

There is nothing left for the Argentine superstar to achieve at the Spanish club after 10 Spanish league titles, four Champions League crowns and half a dozen Spanish cup victories, so any chat about how is legacy will be impacted is futile.

However can you blame the club wanting to hang on to their most valuable asset without a fight?

Messi is synonymous with Barca and vice versa, with the club more than content in exercising a transfer fee to the tune of an eye-watering 700m EU ($NZ1.2b).

Even at 33, how riveting would it be to see one of the greatest of all time in the premier league if Manchester City get their man.

O’Reilly grabs win No. 50, then goes one better

Mid Canterbury junior driver Sarah O’Reilly notched up a notable milestone late last week to highlight another successful few days for Mid Canterbury based interests.

O’Reilly, one of the rapid-risers of the sport currently, notched up the 50th win of her fleeting

driving career thus far when she drove Jabali to success at Invercargill on Thursday.

In what will be her third full season in the junior driving ranks, O’Reilly, who works for the West Melton stable of Chrissie Dalgety and Nathan Purdon, has made a strong start to the season with three wins from two dozen drives.

Her 51st career success and third win for the season came on Friday night at Addington, when

she guided roughie Invaluable home late in the night for her employers.

She wasn’t the only Mid Cantabrian to taste success at Invercargill on Thursday either.

Brent White continued his grand run of form when Ardee Trouble found the front for Stephen McNally and never looked back, clearing out for a big victory.

While the win was nice, White will have taken plenty of posi-

tives out of the runs of both Burlington and one of his stable stars, Jazzy Star, who turned in a very strong fresh-up performance at Addington on Friday night.

Driven by Ricky May, the speedy pacer was last at the top of the straight but flashed home to finish third – a good sign of things to come.

May’s reunion with A G’s White Socks at the meeting didn’t go at all to plan, with the big pacer ironically suffering a heart prob-

lem mid-race from which point he was withdrawn.

He’s expected to make a full recovery and is being pointed towards returning to Addington next week.

John Morrison rounded out the local harness success for the weekend when he again guided an in-form Time In A Bottle to success for Geraldine trainer John Mounce.

The speedy mare has now won three of her last four starts.

Grudge match win “special”

There always seems to be added motivation when facing off with your neighbours.

All told there was no shortage of feeling in the Colts Mid Canterbury final at the weekend.

The Methven/Rakaia Combined Colts prevailed over Celtic/ Southern 25-13 in a fiery showdown at the Rakaia Domain on Saturday.

The home side got home off the back of a steady team performance, together with a double from fullback Sam Peek.

Coach Mark Smith said there was not much between the two sides.

“We probably wanted it a little bit more I think,” he said.

“It’s always a grudge match when its two local sides, so there’s a fair bit of passion.

“They all know each other bloody well and have been playing together for years and years.”

The added incentive of the occasion also counteracted the feeling among the playing group that they were slightly underdone after missing two weeks of action.

“It’s been a funny old season, one minute we’re playing and one minute we’re not,” Smith said.

“When we couldn’t play the weekend of the Bs’ final, we were almost with the understanding that might be our season done.

“And then last week we were defaulted to.”

However the opportunity to claim the spoils in the Mid Canterbury final was never going to be taken lightly for the players, after missing out on the silverware in 2019.

“They were up for it,” Smith said.

“It’s pretty special to win the Mid Canterbury final.

“When we first started the season, that was one of the first things one of the boys said when we went round the room when discussing goals was get the Mid Canterbury Cup back.”

The squad have also fed off the

success achieved by both Methven senior teams over the past few weeks.

“That was another talking point, the culture at Methven rugby club is massive between all three sides.

“The way the final has worked out this year has been quite good, we were all able to watch the Watters Cup final, then we

got to watch the Bs’ final.

“Because all the finals were on three different weeks, each team got their own focus.

“The boys were playing on that.”

A chance for further silverware is in the offing with the scheduled Bowl final against Christchurch Old Boys this Saturday in Methven.

Methven/Rakaia Combined Colts coach Mark Smith commended the side’s team performance which led them to a 25-13 win over Celtic/Southern at the weekend.

Winning weekend for Mid Canterbury There were big wins for the Mid Canterbury sides in the Combined U14.5 competition in Ashburton on Saturday.

The Mid Canterbury Plains have advanced to the final after a 60-13 hammering of Lincoln.

The Plains will now square off against an unbeaten West Melton, who beat Waihora 33-28 in the other semi-final, at West Melton.

Mid Canterbury Alps went close to cracking triple figures as they ran riot in a 92-28 win over Leeston Combined.

In the U16s, Mid Canterbury Alps beat Prebbleton 42-5, with Mid Canterbury Plains having a bye.

Alps and Plains will meet in the Mid Canterbury U16 final on Tuesday at the Celtic Rugby Club grounds, kicking off at 6.30pm.

Mid Canterbury Alps edged Waihora 22-20 in Tai Tapu in the Combined U18s to maintain second place heading into the final week of the round robin, where they take on Oxford in Oxford.

Epic battles on-court

Methven’s two senior teams were both absorbed in thrilling battles in Saturday afternoon netball where both games were decided by a solitary goal.

The first senior game on court concluded with a 32-31 victory for Hampstead’s under-18B team over Methven Humm Engineering.

It was then the turn of Methven Paddock Vets who pipped Allenton Senior A 26-25 to retain its spot at the top of the table.

They have opened up a four point lead after the second placed Ashburton College 9A outfit went down 21-30 to the 10Bs in the AshColl derby.

There were more dominant performances in the senior reserves grade.

Methven Travel recorded a 34-8 win over College’s under-15 team, followed by a 37-11 win for Hampstead under-15A over Rakaia.

Saturday netball was again played behind closed doors with Years 5-6 out of action in the junior competition.

Game times were overhauled

across senior and junior competitions to allow extra time for the stadium to empty, and then re-fill between rounds, a Mid Canterbury Netball spokesperson explained.

Laying the groundwork for success Mid Canterbury’s senior representative squad were putting in the work at the EA Network Centre on Sunday ahead of this weekend’s Hanan Shield defence. It was the second training session for the squad as coach Claire Tappin and manager Caroline Polson fine tuned combinations ahead of Sunday’s tournament in Ashburton, which sees the side face off with North Otago and South Canterbury. Is there a late twist in the tale, or will it be par for the course in premier netball?

The penultimate week of round robin fixtures commence tomorrow night at the EA Networks Centre, as teams vie for a top two finals spot.

Another factor to consider is how some of the Hanan Shield squad members are utilised for their respective clubs ahead of representative duty on Sunday.

Does that open the door for some of the outside teams this week?

Hampstead look home and hosed for a top two spot, and something calamitous would need to occur on court over the next fortnight for them to be denied a place in the big dance.

Elsewhere, there are four other teams still a chance to work themselves into contention.

Methven were impressive in disposing of Celtic last week and will go a long way to cementing a possible top two finals berth with victory over College A. Finding a way to unlock Methven’s tenacious defence will be the biggest obstacle for the AshColl girls, and the young side will need to produce a gritty display if they want to avoid defeat.

College nabbed a crucial bonus point last week as they fell to a two-goal defeat to United, however it will be the full four they will be hunting tomorrow night in the first game on court.

Celtic A and B then face off on court in what is crunch time for the green machine’s top team.

They can move into second spot with victory, however it will be banking on an upset win for College over Methven if that is to occur.

Hampstead take on United in the final matchup, where the blue and golds will be highly fancied to book a 1 v 2 finals place ahead of next week’s final leg of games.

Combined side crushed by the heavyweights

A chocka casualty ward and 80odd points later, it was a severe lesson for Mid Canterbury Combined at the weekend.

Christchurch Boys’ High bore down on a depleted young Combined side with an 87-5 drubbing as they banked the necessary maximum to move into pole position in the UC Championship race.

Despite the heavy defeat, there was plenty of value gained from the experience, according to Combined’s pragmatic head coach Shane Enright.

“Even though this was the biggest loss of the 2020 season, we are all so proud that we never put up the white flag,” he said.

“Again, as a young team with 19 of the 22-man squad hopefully coming back to school next year, we will learn again from these experiences for the future.”

As has been the case all season, the visitors were not helped by a lengthy injury toll which includes Ben Middleton, Alex Barnaby, Fononga Lisala, Sam Ree and Cade Whittaker.

Alex Roderick is also gone for the season after he suffered a head knock during the weekend’s game.

Boys’ High raced out to a 29-0 lead after 25 minutes as the Christchurch team proceeded to command the breakdown.

Combined’s pack however

fronted up at scrum time, despite conceding a significant weight advantage to the Boys’ High pack.

The visitors got themselves on the board after lock Pasi Hala tapped and went from close range to surge over.

Captain Michael Hennings also went close before the break when he picked-and-went from the scrum base, only for him to be held up.

“We talked at halftime that a lot of their points had come from our mistakes, missed tackles, ball

lost in contact – and we weren’t that far out of the race.”

The hosts proceeded to up the ante in the second 35 as the score blew out.

Combined also lost hooker Josh Dunlea to the bin after taking an opposition player out in the air.

A handful of under-16 players made their UC Championship debuts off the bench.

Combined is back home this weekend where they will meet St Bede’s College.

Celtic find new champions The Celtic Squash Club will be engraving two new names on their honours board this week, after Lee Barker and Christine Lima took out their respective championship finals.

While Lima proved too strong for all her rivals over the weeklong championships, Barker had a far more difficult path, both getting to and winning the final.

Billy Nolan brought his A game

along to give Barker a serious five-set workout in the semi-finals, while on the other side of the draw John McDonnell, who already has his name on the big board multiple times, had to get past Paul Cousins and then third seed Jason Feutz to book his spot in the big match.

The final itself, which only started around 8.30pm due to the mass of five-setters during the

day, proved to be a classic, with a packed gallery treated to a thriller, full of fine attacking shots and equally stunning retrievals from both players, leading to some energy-sapping rallies.

Top seed Barker had to pull out every shot in his arsenal to finally prevail 15-11 in the fifth set.

Lima proved a class above in the ladies A final, winning in straight sets over second seed

Mick Hooper extended a remarkable record when he won the men’s B grade title – for the fifth time.

This time round, he had to overcome a massive challenge

from Ron Carlson, finally winning 15-13 in the fifth game.

Fourth seed Shane Muckle came through to win the C grade over Rob Giles in four sets, taking out top seed Craig Donaldson to get to the final, while it was a battle of the Hamishes in the D grade final, with Hamish Trott eventually getting the better of promising youngster Hamish O’Reilly 3-1.

Methven crash and burn in goal-fest

Methven’s senior outfit have been stunned in a 12 goal extravaganza to fall to their second defeat of the season.

The side went down 7-5 to the mid-table Ferrymead Bays’ Keen Lads at the Methven Domain on Saturday, in a result which gives the table-topping Baby Blues some breathing room at the pointy end of the ladder in Mainland’s senior men’s division 2 grade.

A club spokesperson said the side were torn apart at times, however showed terrific character to claw back within touching distance.

It was a regrettable weekend all round for the Mid Canterbury senior teams as all five sides finished on the wrong side of the ledger.

It was always going to be a formidable task for Mid Canterbury United at Halswell in the Canter-

bury Championship League.

The senior side were hammered 6-0 by the competition leaders, in what was a comprehensive display by the home side.

The Reserves meanwhile went down 4-1 in the earlier fixture, a scoreline which provides further encouragement for the vastly improved United Reserves team, confirming that they are no longer the competition whipping boys.

Meanwhile in division 4, United fell to their second home defeat in a matter of weeks as they were edged 3-2 by Nomads United Blue at the Ashburton Domain.

The visitors got themselves in front in the first half, before proceedings opened up after the break.

A double from United’s Ben Chute was cancelled out by two further goals from the Nomads as the Christchurch club hijacked the three points.

Methven’s struggles in division 7 continued as the side was outclassed 5-0 by Parklands to cap a disappointing weekend on the football field for the local clubs.

Methven were outgunned 7-5 by Ferrymead Bays on Saturday.

34 members played on 28th August, including the 8 men who qualified to play for the Club Championships. The players in Round 1 were Sam Prince & Eric Weir, Antony White & Gavin Johnston, Stewart Bennett & Terry O’Reilly and Peter Woods & Murray Lister.

After some close contests, the winners were: Sam Prince, Antony White, Stewart Bennett and Peter Woods. They will play Round 2 on 10th September.

The rest of us played a stroke round sponsored by Accountantz.

The winners, with the best nett scores were: Women, Tonee Hurley and Men, Bruce Leighton. They both won on countback from the runners-up Bev Blair and Dick Hansen. Tonee and Bev both scored 34 and Bruce and Dick both scored 36.

Also scoring 36 were: Robynne Nicoll, Janice Dunlop, Judith Stoddart and Anne Fleming.

The finals for all disciplines are over, bringing to an end a very tricky, Covid 19 and weather affected season, yet still successful and enjoyable to all who played in these tournaments.

This was greatly appreciated by all, especially Maureen Knox, with everyone clapping and toe tapping along.

On Sunday August 30th Allenton hosted a fundraising Tournament for the Sub Centre and a Memorial to a very liked and respected bowler in Ian Kaye, a member of the Rakaia Club.

A beautiful cup was donated by Mrs. Heather Kaye and the family, which was presented to the winning Fours team of N. Aitkenson H. Goodall, D. Jones and Marg, Tonks. This was the highlight of a very successful day. Our thanks to all the clubs for their generous support.

Opening day Saturday September 5, 1pm start. Whites to be worn. A Plate for Afternoon tea would be appreciated.

This is an opening/closing day, presentations to be made.

A beautiful weekend saw hordes of happy hackers take to the Brandon course.

On Saturday Matt held a “Beat the Pro” day, and well, “candy from a baby” springs to mind.

Every man, woman and their dog scored better than the big fella.

We had a lot of theories spinning around as to why this happened.

Mine is, that Matt is such a great coach

Rosemary Bennett was one of the big winners on the day at the Allenton Winter Bowls finals. he has raised everyones game.

Top players were Brendon Davidson, Greig Sparrow, Dave Robertson and Blair Snowball. Well done chaps.

On Sunday we had the 50th anniversary playing of the Foodstuffs Trophy against our great friends from Tinwald, and after what seems like an age, the Trophy is back in our cabinet.

Lynden Moore and Lindsey Jackson tried hard for the visitors with 40 points each, but a strong home team lead by Leigh Wackrow, Mary Lou and Davo, again, scored an average of 32.75 to Tinwalds 32.1. Congratulations to captains Vicki and Terry.

This Saturday we kick off the Club Champs match play rounds with the round of 16.

The first round is usually an easy one to call with a big seeding spread, but each grade has some great games in store.

In the seniors, great mates Charlie and Greig will have a ding-dong battle.

Hamish against Terry will be a cracker and the in form Davo will fancy his chances of toppling Blair.

Ashburton Inner Wheel

Brent Gray, principal at Ashburton Intermediate School was our guest speaker for our August meeting.

Brent spoke about growing up in Methven attending Methven Primary school and Methven High School as it was called in those days.

He gave us a snapshot of his home and school life with many laughs and highlights.

Brent was selected for the NZ Secondary School Choir and while at school was a member of the Methven Choral society as it was known then.

With a group of friends they applied for teacher’s college and has held many positions in that profession.

Some years later he was selected for a Group Study Exchange through Rotary District 9970 to Chicago nominated by Ashburton Plains Rotary Club.

Ashburton Inner Wheel are collecting items for Kits for Kindy to be sent to Vanuatu, when we will know which kindergarten we have supported.

Tuesday September 1st in the International Inner Wheel walk and talk day to be supported by our club, again we will be supporting Bookarama by supplying food for the Rotarians and the public.

The first of three presentations in the Ashburton U3A’s ‘Health series’ was given this week by Jeanine Doherty, a Dr of Audiology who has owned her own clinic for 30 years.

Her topic,”Health Professionals and the ethical dilemma of delivering patient care v employer pressure to sell goods” was both eye-opening and challenging to some of our preconceived notions that health care is primarily concerned about the patient’s best interests and therefore deserving of our trust.

Audiology, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Optometry all came under fire for their cleverly disguised efforts to convince people that they have the patient’s best interests at heart by offering ‘free this and thats’ and fostering the idea that ‘dearer must be better’.

Jeanine also discussed the dilemma that many young professionals in these medical disciplines find themselves in when the Companies that own the Services that employ them are manipulating and pressurising them into sales roles which compromise health ethics and give the lie to “Patient is Paramount”.

Dr Doherty urged people seeking help in each of these professions to; question the claims presented; put on your cynical hat when ‘freebies’ are mentioned; investigate ownership of the company; ask where products come from; don’t be pressured into quick decision making.

There was some superb work on display at the Ashburton Woodworkers’ August meeting.

event and plan to raffle of an outdoor table and chairs.

Bruce Ferriman then introduced Roger Paterson who began his working career as an apprentice cabinet maker, in those days working with solid wood, becoming a skilled craftsman. His use of native and exotic timbers to create all types of furniture. He learnt how to design and assist clients in creating the ideal piece of furniture, exactly as they requested.

Work on cabin cruisers gave him a nautical interest.

Then came an opportunity to build caskets which he continued for many years along with his funeral parlour.

Roger did mention the big difference working with proper wood compared to this artificial fibre we so much of these days. His preference is still with solid wood but cost dictates otherwise.

Roger recited several interesting yarns, incidents that have occurred in his professional businesses.

A well-attended meeting was held recently, in the new time of 7.30pm.

Julie read a quotation – “The first rule of kindness is to be kind to yourself”.

Arrangements are being made for a meeting for interested people, to be talks on self-publishing and how to sell your books, probably in October.

The Assignment for the meeting was to write a letter to my younger self.

Some of the topics were end of world, school teacher, not dress rehearsal, 40 year old, true peace, children care, inner strength, nightmares, the sixties and chicken pox.

The instant exercise by Rae was “Sitting at my desk”.

Subjects were keyboard tapping, tax return, song words, scrape and scratch, stress, work colleague, cat, inspiration and time to finish. The September assignment is “And that’s how the fight started”.

We are looking for a highly motivated Executive Assistant/Receptionist to join our team at the Talley's Fairfield Site.

Talley's Fairfield is a new site of Talley's Limited based 10 minutes North of Ashburton, just down the road from our existing Ashburton site.

Reporting to the General Manager and working alongside our farming team you will primarily be responsible for the day to day operation of the cropping and cultivation on our farm. This role will also involve reporting on new methods, growing conditions, and processes to improve production of our crops as well as ensuring all machinery and equipment is maintained to a high standard.

You will primarily be responsible for providing high level administrative support to the General Manager and looking after reception. No two day's will be the same while we are developing our new site and you will play a critical role in ensuring the most effective and efficient use of the General Manager's time.

It wasn’t all smoke and mirrors at the Ashburton Car Club standing ¼ mile sprints at the weekend, when nothing but an eerie silence followed one of the racers down the track.

In a day punctuated by the familiar sounds of throaty V8s, high pitched Nissans and Nick Turner’s delightful Honda City, the Tesla X’s silence on the start line was disconcerting to say the least.

What was not disconcerting

Somewhere in there is Anton Blanken and his Nissan Skyline. Along with turning on a pretty impressive burnout, Blanken took out first place in the Ashburton Car Club’s standing ¼ mile sprints at the weekend.

however were the times it posted. First time entrant Levi Tipple blazed down the course in a best time of 12.281, earning him fourth position for the day.

Club member Wayne Muckle said it was great for the club to have the Tesla competing.

“These cars are the way of the future and there is considerable development going into them. It was a thrill to see it in action.”

Muckle wasn’t sure if going electric was for him.

“The closest thing I’ll probably come to owning anything electric is a mobility scooter when I get old.”

Ashburton Car Club vice president Daniel Tew said he was really pleased with how the day went.

“We had to pack up a bit early as the wind came up and caused issues blowing the timer over, but the 22 entrants from around Canterbury, still got in six races each, so that was pretty good.”

Tew said that was the last round of points races for the season.

“Even with Covid-19 lockdown interfering with our race calendar, we still put on fourteen races

this season, so we’re happy with that.”

The focus of the club is moving to more of a family day, where the racers get to know each other and help out when needed.

“It used to be like that back in the day, then it got a bit more competitive for a few years and now we are moving back to the ‘everybody’s welcome’ atmosphere.”
