SPRING WONDERLAND

After a lean winter of snowfall on the Canterbury plains, residents around the foothills awoke on the first day of spring yesterday to a blanketing of the white stuff. Heavy snowfalls in the early hours of the morning left roads precarious, schools closed and farmers out ensuring their stock were okay.

In Methven, the snow was met with enthusiasm, due to snow in the township usually meaning significant falls on Mt Hutt which will result in a longer skiing season. That’s music to the ears of tourism operators, already struggling with no international visitors, especially with school holidays just around the corner.
