THE INDEPENDENT VOICE OF MID CANTERBURY

Local school rolls bulging BY ERIN TASKER

Classrooms in libraries and arts centres will greet students at the district’s fast growing primary schools today. The 2014 primary schooling year begins in Mid Canterbury today and schools spoken to by the Guardian say their rolls are continuing to climb. Longbeach School principal Neil Simons said a bulge in the number of Year 6 students at his school had resulted in a new community funded classroom being opened. The class has been established in the school’s performing arts centre and its teacher was being funded by the community, which had committed to raising $30,000. “We’re having a board funded class because we have a huge amount of Year 6s and there was no easy way to group them. It was getting too messy so we decided to keep them together and open a new classroom,” Mr Simons said. By the end of the year, Longbeach’s roll is expected to hit 160. “We’re starting on 135. In fact I’ve just turned down two enrolments from out of zone; we are just chokka block,” Mr Simons said. At Wakanui School, where growth has forced them to establish an en-

rolment zone, principal Hilary Boyce was expecting a year of growth three times what it had been in previous years. Their roll will start at about 90 but steadily climb towards 100 and the school’s youngest children begin their year learning in the school’s library, which has been turned into a classroom until a new classroom is built later this year. Town primary schools are also expecting big years, with Allenton School starting with around 300 children, but expected to reach around 380 during the year. “We’re fairly chokka in the new entrant room; we’re almost starting on maximum. I think within a couple of weeks it will be a full class, so that’s about 18,” principal Graeme Smith said. Tinwald School principal Peter Livingstone was still taking unexpected enrolments on Friday and was expecting a starting roll of around 220. Meanwhile Ashburton Intermediate enrolments are down, due to a smaller group of Year 7s starting. Principal Gavin Cooper said they would have around 360, compared to 400 last year, but with large clusters of children coming through contributing schools they were likely to hit 450 in years to come.

School year gets under way After a long wait, Ashburton schoolboy Hunter Watson packs his bag ready for his first day at Allenton School today. FULL STORY
