Drunk driver prompts warning BY ERIN TASKER

ERIN.T@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

A drink driver caught nearly three times over the legal limit has prompted a summer drink driving warning from police. Just days after the launch of Mid Canterbury’s holiday drink driving campaign, the man was caught driving with a breath alcohol level of 1151mcg – almost three times the legal limit of 400mcg.

According to Ashburton police it’s one of the highest drink driving levels recorded in the district this year. Ashburton police senior sergeant Grant Russell said people were taking too long to get the anti-drink driving message. He said during the summer months alcohol could affect people differently, particularly if they had not eaten much food. “You can sit out in the sun and

have one beer and be buggered,” Mr Russell said. “If people feel they shouldn’t be driving, they’ve got to be so careful. Can you afford to be without your licence for six months?” He said people needed to ensure they planned ahead and had a sober driver to get them home if they were going to drink. That was the main message of this year’s Community Alcohol

Action Project (CAAP) holiday season campaign, launched last week. It had a wild west theme for its 21st year, with the message: Before horsing around, plan a safe ride home. With Christmas parties about to kick into full gear, planning was more important than ever and police are warning that if people drink and drive, they will be caught.

CAAP is a combined effort between police and road safety officials and the Ashburton Community Alcohol and Drug Service and members will be out in force on the roads over the coming weeks. Several drink driving blitzes are planned, where the team will work with police to catch drink drivers and provide rewards for sober ones, on top of everyday policing. Ph 03 307 7900 to subscribe!

Movie plans for Hitler satire A bestselling German satirical novel about Adolf Hitler’s reappearance 66 years after the end of World War Two is to be turned into a movie. The book Er ist Wieder Da has become a surprise success since it was published last year, selling more than 1.3 million printed and electronic copies despite the fact that it deals with a touchy subject for many Germans. In the book the Nazi leader awakens in modern-day Berlin and becomes the star of a TV comedy show. An English-language version is to be released in April under the title Look Who’s Back. Munich-based Constantin Film said yesterday it plans to produce a movie based on the book to be released in 2015. – AP

True love’s kiss? Natalie Portman’s passionate kiss with Australian actor Chris Hemsworth in the Thor sequel has been exposed as a fake. The actor was actually embracing his wife, Elsa Pataky, in the scene. Portman plays the Aussie heart-throb’s love interest Dr Jane Foster in Thor: The Dark World, released earlier this year. The Oscar-winning actress was unable to attend a number of re-shoots as she was busy working on a new project. She says rather than hire another actress to stand in for Portman for a kissing scene, producers asked Hemsworth’s wife Pataky to take her place. “It was for re-shoots and he was working in Hong Kong and I couldn’t get there because I was working on my own film. So they put his wife in my wig and costume, that’s why it it is so passionate. It was such a perfect solution, wasn’t it,” Portman said. – WENN

NZ still least corrupt country New Zealand has been ranked the world’s least corrupt country for the eighth year running. Transparency International’s Corruption Perception index ranked New Zealand first equal with Denmark out of 176 countries for having the lowest perception of corruption in the public sector. New Zealand is also ranked first on the Forbes magazine list of the Best Countries for Business, partially due to the high trust in our public sector, and our transparent and stable business climate. – APNZ

Miley Cyrus’ credit card was apparently declined when she tried to buy $US170 ($A186.55) worth of music records. The singer stopped off at Freakabeat Records in Sherman Oaks, San Fernando Valley, on Sunday to buy a selection of used rock albums. However, her purchase was reportedly halted when the star’s card was declined. “No-one in the store really recognised Miley, even though she was hard to miss. It’s not her demographic of fans. But she was embarrassed none the less when her card was denied!” a spy told RadarOnline. “The cashier was really nice and told her the bank probably put a hold on it because it was a large purchase, so she dug out another card and the payment went through.” – CM

Too many chiefs? The Czech Republic may not have enough police officers, but it has two police chiefs. Interior Minister Martin Pecina says that former police president Petr Lessy who was fired last year by his predecessor over allegations of misusing power will return to his job after he was cleared by a court in October. Lessy’s successor, Martin Cervicek, has refused to resign. Cervicek has called the situation “absolute nonsense” while Pecina has ordered Lessy to take a vacation in the meantime. The police president is the top police officer in the country. – AP

■ ASHBURTON CENSUS STATISTICS

We’re still a long way off being a city By sue NewMaN

sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

The Ashburton District’s population might have reached 31,041 but the town of Ashburton is still a long way off achieving city status. The Census divides the district’s populations into 16 areas but does not define an urban boundary around Ashburton, making it difficult to determine

the exact population of the town itself. Because each of the 16 areas is determined by a series of mesh blocks, boundaries in rural areas in particular do not follow population hubs. While Rakaia might be much larger than Chertsey it is given a population of just 1110 while Chertsey is listed as having 2493 people. Without the rural areas of

Methven, Fairton, Mt Somers, Hinds, Chertsey and Rakaia, the population of the Ashburton urban area according to this year’s Census is 18,757. For many years the population threshold for city status was 20,000 but as part of the reorganisation of local government areas in 1989 that threshold was increased to 50,000. The South Island has five

official cities – Christchurch, Dunedin, Invercargill, Nelson and Timaru although Nelson and Timaru are both below the 50,000 threshold. The Nelson District’s population in this year’s Census was 46,437 and the Timaru District’s was 43,932. Within the Ashburton District there were 12,396 dwellings that were occupied on

Census night with another 1248 unoccupied. Since the 2006 Census, home ownership in the Ashburton District has plunged, dropping by 2 per cent at the same time as the number of people living in rented accommodation has risen by 32 per cent. Family trusts are also becoming a popular form of home ownership with this number rising by 27 per cent.

■ LAURISTON CRASH

Driver walks away with minor injuries from collision By Michelle NelsoN michelle.n@theguardian.co.nz

A Barrhill resident has walked away from a crash on a rural intersection shocked, but with only minor injuries. Gail King was driving her maroon Holden Commodore on the Winchmore Lauriston Road heading towards Barrhill shortly before 3.30 yesterday afternoon, when she hit a trailer where the road intersects the Dromore Methven Road. The driver of the west-bound Toyota Hilux towing the trailer had failed to give way. Methven police constable Aaron Tapp said the ute driver was unfamiliar with the road. Mrs King said she was conscious throughout the ordeal and struggled to maintain control of her vehicle, which was written off in the crash. “I’ve never seen an airbag in my life,” she said. While grateful to have got off lightly in terms of personal injury, she was angry about losing her car. Mr Tapp said the incident served as a timely reminder for people to be careful on intersections. A tow truck removed the damaged Commodore from the scene.

Council too small for ceremony BY ERIN TASKER

A change of venue was required to host Ashburton’s biggest citizenship ceremony yesterday. Forty-five people became New Zealand citizens at the ceremony, which was moved from the Ashburton District Council’s chambers to the Ashburton Trust Event Centre’s Bradford room in order to fit everyone in. While in days gone by the Ashburton District Council might have hosted four citizenship ceremonies a year with

only a handful of people swearing allegiance to Her Majesty the Queen, yesterday’s ceremony was this year’s seventh. In total, 188 new citizens have taken part in citizenship ceremonies in Ashburton this year. Ashburton Mayor Angus McKay said citizenship ceremonies were a great opportunity for the community to formally welcome new residents on behalf of the country. “The large numbers show that the Ashburton District is a great place to live and people who have migrated to the dis-

trict continue to stay here,” he said. Yesterday those taking part were from all corners of the world – Samoa, Nepal, South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, the Philippines, and Britain. They ranged from people who have only been in New Zealand for a few years, to at least one lady who has been in New Zealand for upwards of 50 years. They were all officially welcomed by Mr McKay, who told them his door – and those of the district’s councillors – were always open for them if they

had any problems. Yesterday’s new citizens were: Sharon Bailey, David Bailey, Daniel Bailey, Benjamin Bailey (South African), Susan Coustas, Megan Coustas, Robyn Coustas (British), Gregory Coustas (South African), Iosua Fepuleai, Jill Fepuleai, Caroline Fepuleai (Samoan), Gerhard Fourie, Ingrid Fourie (South African), Taeaga Mafiti, Faauuga Mafiti, Scott Mafiti, Toafa Taeauga, Delta Taeauga, Pevelise Taeauga, Kadugli Taeuga (Samoan), Peauvasa Schuster (Samoan), Dipendra Maharjan,

Champa Maharjan, Palistha Maharjan, Parixit Maharjan (Nepalese), Gregory Martin (British), Ngezei Nkwo (Nigerian), Catherine Nkwo (Kenyan), Rodney Nkwo (Nigerian), Faataualofa Manuleleua, Eletise Manuleleua, John Manuleleua, Marie Manuleleua, Avalii Manuleleua, Siavao Manuleleua (Samoa), Ao Touli (Samoa), Sheryl Sulit, Sherwin Sulit, Sherin Sulit (Filipino), Moyra Whiting (British), Phillip Blyth (British), Jane Cole (British), Martin Cole (South African), Rebekka Cole (British).

Population make-up becoming more diverse

With about 18 per cent of people living in the Ashburton District describing their ethnic grouping as other than European in this year’s Census the workload for the district’s Notary Public has increased.

Alister Argyle’s work involves being official to witness signatures on legal documents, collecting sworn statements, administering oaths and certifying the authenticity of legal documents usually for use overseas.

The work is similar to that of a Justice of the Peace, but with international documents. Since his appointment earlier this year, Mr Argyle said he had received two or three enquiries each week from people reflecting

a wide range of nationalities. In this year’s Census the district’s non-European population had shown a significant increase. Of the 30,041 people who live in the Ashburton District, 28,569 gave their ethnic origin as Eu-

ropean or Maori; the remainder represent a wide range of ethnic origins. The increase in work meant he had had to use the services of Michael Urquhart, a notary public who recently returned to Ashburton.

More people working past 65 BY SUE NEWMAN

SUE.N@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

The demographics of the Ashburton District’s workforce is changing with significantly larger numbers of people choosing to work full-time beyond the age of 65. In the 2006 Census 387 people over 65 said they were still working full-time, with another 507 in part-time work. Included in those figures were 18 over 80s who were still

putting in a full day’s paid work and another 48 who worked part-time. In this year’s Census, the number in paid full-time work over the age of 65 almost doubled, hitting 654. Another 582 were still working part-time. Of the 1236 over 65s still working, 27 over 80s were working full-time with another 60 working part-time. In 2006 three males over the age of 85 said they still worked

full time with six men and nine women working part-time. This year, nine men and three women over 85 were still working full-time with 12 males and nine women working parttime. This year’s Census shows little change in the pattern of youth unemployment. In 2006 there were 1599 people aged between 15 and 24 in full-time work in the district; this year there were 1671. Seven years ago 138 young

people were listed as unemployed; this year that had risen to 198. The number of people engaged in full-time work in the Ashburton District has risen from 11,436 in 2006 to 12,840 this year. Part-time numbers have risen from 3629 to 3810 and those who listed themselves as unemployed, from 330 to 495. The number of people earning salaries that topped $100,000 almost doubled be-

tween 2006 and 2013. In 2006 534 people (411 men and 126 women) earned triple figure incomes and at this year’s Census that figure had reached 1011 (744 men and 264 women). Just 24 people living in the district are listed as having a doctorate degree with another 168 saying they have a masters degree. There are 2136 people in the district who have a bachelors, post graduate or honours degree.

■ CHRISTMAS LIGHTS TURNED ON

Honour falls to Our Lady of the Snows School BY TONI WILLIAMS

TONI.W@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

Pupils from Our Lady of the Snows got the honour of turning on the Ashburton District Council Christmas tree lights yesterday at the Ashburton Library. The 35 pupils represented the whole Methven school with one child chosen from each family. They sang Wish You a Merry Christmas and Jingle Bells to an intimate audience that included Ashburton District Council mayor Angus McKay and chief executive officer Andrew Dalziel. Oldest pupil George McKendry, 13, and youngest Henry White, 5, switched on the lights and Mabelle Davidson, 9, hung an ornament for the school. Our Lady of the Snows principal Tony Lamb praised the efforts of the children, especially singing unaccompanied by music. “I am proud of their efforts.” He said they had prepared together for “one week, hard practice every day.”

■ FAR FIELD DAY

In brief

ARIA plays host to 280 people BY MICHELLE NELSON MICHELLE.N@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

Hats and water bottles were the order of the day at the Arable Research in Action (ARIA) field day yesterday. About 280 people attended the Foundation for Arable Research’s major South Island field event, at its research site near Chertsey.

ARIA showcased this summer’s trial plots, covering a range of issues. The international speaker was Lise Jorgenson, a Danish scientist, who spoke about fungicide resistance in cereal crops, and European measures to lessen the dependency on pesticides. Denmark has recently instigated a system for rank-

ing the impact of pesticides on health and the environment, and introduced a tax system; those on the lower end of the scale pay significantly less than the product deemed to be most toxic. Potatoes, grass grub control, wheat cultivars, stubble burning and disease control were also on yesterday’s agenda.

Hair goes tonight Ashburton’s three ambulance officers shaving their hair for Child Cancer have more than doubled their fundraising target thanks to community support. And there is still a day left to go. Frith Chamberlain, Kerry McKeeBowdler and Shane Hurst will all get the chop tonight with their hair removed for the charity cause. Fundraising through www.fundraieonline.co.nz/ AshburtonAmbos/ has taken off for the trio with more than $1100 raised. Their hair is due to come off tonight at 7pm.

Technology use rises Cellphone and internet use has increased significantly in the Ashburton District over the past seven years. In this year’s Census 10,044 people said they had access to a cellphone, up 40 per cent on the 2006 Census number. The growth in internet access has been even more marked with 8667 people now saying they had access, an increase in use of 47 per cent over 2006. There has been little change in access to a telephone, while access to a fax machine has declined by 47 per cent.

No nominations yet for Methven board BY SUSAN SANDYS

SUSAN.S@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

Potential Methven Community Board by-election candidates have yet to come out of the woodwork, with less than two weeks to go before nominations close. The lack of interest to date however is not a concern for the board chairperson, Liz McMillan, as she is aware of two mothers in the community who are keen. The by-election is costing ratepayers $8050, after just four nominations were received for the five-member board during

the recent local body elections. Nominations for the one remaining position on the board must be in by December 16. “There’s definitely an interest out there even though no-one has put a nomination forward, there’s definitely talk about it, mainly with mums in the community,” Ms McMillan said. “We haven’t had any business people put their hands up.” Ashburton District Councillor Martin Nordqvist, who is one of two councillors on the board, said he knew of one mum, whom the Guardian understands is one of the two Ms

McMillan was referring to, who would stand if she thought noone else was. “She said she wouldn’t see the board stuck,” Mr Nordqvist said. Council community planning officer Gavin Thomas was also confident there would be Methven residents planning to stand. “We have still got two weeks to go, we are confident there will be people in the community who want to put themselves forward,” Mr Thomas said. In the event of no-one at all standing, another by-election could be held, although given

the cost that would be unlikely. Other options were an appointment could be made to fill the vacancy, or the board carried on with just four members. A representation review is carried out every six years, and it would be at this that it would be considered whether Methven required a community board. The next would be held in five years’ time. The board’s current members are Ms McMillan, Dan McLaughlin, Hamish Gilpin and Sonia McAlpine. Councillors on the board are Mr Nordqvist and Alan Totty.

Ashburton’s Maori population has increased by 33 per cent over the past seven years, with 2196 listing their ethnicity as Maori in this year’s Census. The largest age group is 0-14 year olds, 843 and within that demographic the largest number is in the 0–4 year old age group, 333.

School in lock-down Armed police swooped on a Whangarei home, set up cordons and put a nearby school into lock-down during a family violence incident in Raumanga yesterday. Police were alerted to the incident about 12.30pm. Due to concerns for the female victim and a possibility of firearms at the address, the Armed Offenders Squad was mobilised. Police entered the house but the couple were not there. They were being sought last night. - APNZ

Sisters score cover double By Myles HuMe

Myles.h@theguardian.co.nz

Ashburton College and Intermediate could not have more contrasting school magazine covers this year, but look closely and you will find the common thread. Ashburton sisters Emily, 16, and Maysie, 13, Willis have designed their respective school magazine covers for 2013, in what marked a proud moment for the family. Emily, a Year 11 art pupil at Ashburton College, has produced an oil painting of a fiery phoenix rising above the Mid Canterbury landscape in the night sky. “I researched ‘phoenix’ on the internet and then came up with the idea in my head. I then really wanted to incorporate Ashburton so you can see the Southern Alps across the bottom and the southern cross in the sky,” she said. Emily said she was stunned to be asked to design the cover, being just Year 11, there were many older pupils who could have been worthwhile candidates.

Sisters Maysie, 13, (left) and Emily, 16, Willis have achieved a rare feat by both designing the Ashburton Intermediate and College school magazine covers for 2013. Photo tetsuro MitoMo 031213-tM-111

Maysie won a competition at Ashburton Intermediate involving another seven pupils to have her acrylic painting splashed over the school’s magazine cover. She said her painting was inspired by French artist Valeraine Leblond, featuring the green pastures of Mid Canter-

bury, the shores of Wakanui and the town centre clock tower. “I was really quite surprised I won,” she said. Their mother Lynda said it was a special moment for the family, and was also grateful Emily was asked to design the cover at such a young age for

the college. The Ashburton College Phoenix Magazine is available to be ordered and purchased now from the college student office for $25. The Intermediate school magazine is expected to be handed out at the end of the term.

OUR VIEW

Multicultural Mid Canty Coen Lammers EDITOR

T

he latest release of census figures has confirmed a lot of suspicions we may have had about the changing face of our district. Regular figures have given us plenty of indicators about our economic growth and the cost of living, but it is not until we get the definitive figures from Statistics New Zealand that we can drill into the more fascinating details of life in Mid Canterbury. One of the more interesting parts of the census is that we can see who has moved into the district and where they have come from. You just have to walk down the street, or visit the Multicultural Bite Festival, to see that the traditional British heritage is joined by ethnicities from all over the world. People with European roots are still the group with the biggest increase in real numbers, but statistically, the growth is much faster among the Maori, Pacific and Asian communities. The last group increased by 225 per cent from 360 to 1179 since 2006, but local rednecks do not need to fear an Asian invasion, because during that same period the ‘European’ segment grew by 4152. The newcomers from all corners of the world have been the driving force behind the booming economy which saw the median income rise by 33 per cent. This may sound massive, but a median wage of $32,900 indicates that the district’s wealth is not necessarily trickling all the way down. While the number of locals earning over $100,000 has doubled in recent years, many others are still doing it tough. This is also reflected in the number of people owning their own home which surprisingly has gone down by 2 per cent. Over 30 per cent of locals now live in houses which are not their own, and many of those are in family trusts, a number that has increased by 27 per cent. Among all the economic data, the district at least can be relieved that Ashburton may not become the region’s retirement village just yet as many predicted, with the under fouryear-olds being one of the fast growing groups.

YOUR VIEW Bridge N. Cross, in Tuesday’s Guardian, asks for an explanation of the way councillor Alan Totty’s position in relation to the Ashburton Art Gallery and Heritage Centre project differs from that of Cr Alasdair Urquhart’s position regarding a second bridge. My understanding is that Cr Urquhart decided to withdraw from the debate and vote because of public statements he had made espousing a particular position and also the possibility of a personal pecuniary interest. That is borne out by another letter on the same page as Mrs Cross’ letter. Whether that action on the part of Cr Urquhart was the correct one to take I make no comment as I am in no position to know the full facts. However, I am aware of the situation regarding Cr Totty. Firstly, at no time has Cr Totty been ‘chairman’ of the ‘museum’. Prior to my time in the chair the president of the Ashburton Museum and Historical Society was the late John Young, and prior to that the late Bevan Stroud. Alan Totty was for a time society treasurer and he remains an occasional museum volunteer. Secondly, Cr Totty never made public statements indicating his position on the Art Gallery and Heritage Centre outside of council meetings.

Thirdly, no matter what position he chose to take when voting on the project there was never, for him, any possibility of a personal pecuniary interest, positive or negative, from the project. Finally, and most importantly, before Cr Totty took part in any council debate or vote on the project his position was put to the Auditor-General, who cleared him to vote. I again make the point that if any other member of the Bridge Action Group, or anyone else, has questions about the Art Gallery and Heritage Centre, particularly the museum portion of it, they should visit the museum and ask for the correct information before rushing into print with only some of the facts. Bev Tasker President Ashburton Museum and Historical Society ***** The sooner the second bridge is up and running the better. I’m sick of IDIOTS doing U-turns outside Lushingtons coz they did not want to wait at the stop sign for a break in the traffic. Get these idiots off the main road and stop the snail crawl across the bridge at peak times. THE SOONER, THE BETTER, THE SAFER. ***** Alasdair Urquhart should have

been allowed to vote. ***** One doesn’t have to be too clever to observe that challenges of conflict of interest on a councillor have come from within their own ranks. One didn’t have to listen too hard as councillors spoke to get a feel that the drivers of the challenge on Cr Urquhart came from a councillor acting with his retired councillor friends. ***** I hope everyone who is against this new bridge boycotts its usage when it is finally built. That will mean even less traffic build up and an even faster commute across for people like me who look forward to an alternative route. I suggest getting bumper stickers stating your negative stance on the bridge so when the time comes, we will clearly see all you hypocrites using what you despise so much. Bryce ***** Angus McKay is a bit confused; first he voted against the bridge on Chalmers Avenue, then voted for – not a reliable mayor. Does he know that if it wasn’t for the third party that split the vote he would not be mayor, the ratepayer’s second choice was Mr Ellis, don’t you think he should be deputy mayor? You don’t seem to know what

ratepayers want and what they voted for, yes a change. Bob Wade (edited)

Family violence

Well done BASE Youth Centre for your fab window display on family violence surely this window deserves a special mention in the recent judging! Come on guys this is the next generation standing up and saying no way is family violence acceptable.

Christmas in the park There is always going to be someone worse off than us somewhere, that’s life. But how great it is for our community to have this Christmas in the park get together. We have a large number of talented people giving their time to entertain us. I shall definitely be there with family and friends, thankful for what I have and remembering those no longer with me. spend close to two thousand hours a year immersed in meetings, administrivia, discussions about behaviour, torrid email exchanges with Novopay, cynical responses to newspaper questions about national standards and ongoing daily explanations about what is happening now, and what is happening next. Yet it only takes one moment to remind me why I chose teaching and principalship. For me that moment was last Friday during the Hakatere Cultural Festival. The final song in the Ashburton Borough School performance was a Maori translation of the Leonard Cohen song Hallelujah. For five weeks the group had been learning this song and if that wasn’t enough, harmonies were added, as were some solo lines. Then the music teacher of the group made the decision three weeks before they performed, to allow a Year 5 (9-10 year old) girl to play the guitar for them. I know the music teacher and know she could have easily played this song, but she knew this festival was not about the adults, but about the children and she believed in this young girl. So it was with a nervous breath and a shaky hand, the young guitarist moved to the

side and begun strumming. What a moment for her and her mother in the audience. Not only was it her first performance, she was also the source of rhythm and music for the group. What pride she must have felt to perform for her school, her teachers and her family. I don’t know where she will end up with her music, but I do know schooling is about making memories. She will always remember that first performance. Schools are more than factories of national standards, more than one-stop fix-it shops used by politicians to combat social ills they are too scared to admit have been engineered by their ignorant interference. Schools are about memories and mo-

ments. Everyone has an opinion about schools, because everyone has memories of moments that impacted them. Last Friday was about pride, passion and performances. For some of the children who pulled on that school representative shirt, or were given that costume to wear, these performances will be their memory of school. When they poured their passion for performing into 10 minutes on stage we were treated to children living in the moment. They didn’t worry about how their school results looked when published in a paper. They were not concerned with what ERO said to their teachers and boards of trustees. Children live their lives

moment by moment and our job as teachers, principals and parents is to create the environment for children to play, perform, learn and explore. So to the beginning guitarist, thank you for the moment and reminding me why I teach. Keep practising that chord change from F to G – I couldn’t get it when I started playing this song. And to the teachers who believe in our children, never stop believing. (No letter ‘P’s were harmed in the writing of this column). Peter Livingstone is the principal of Tinwald School. In brief

Train engineer nodded off An engineer whose speeding commuter train ran off the rails along a curve, killing four people, experienced a hypnosislike “daze” and nodded at the controls just before the wreck, and by the time he caught himself it was too late, people representing him said yesterday. Attorney Jeffrey Chartier accompanied engineer William Rockefeller to his interview with National Transportation Safety Board investigators and described the account Rockefeller gave. Chartier said the engineer experienced a nod or “a daze,” almost like road fatigue, and he compared it to the phenomenon sometimes called highway hypnosis. He couldn’t say how long it lasted. Rockefeller “basically nodded,” said Anthony Bottalico, leader of the rail employees union, relating what he said the engineer told him. “He had the equivalent of what we all have when we drive a car,” Bottalico said. “That is, you sometimes have a momentary nod or whatever that might be. How long that lasts, I can’t answer that.” Federal investigators said late Tuesday they had removed Bottalico’s union, the Association of Commuter Rail Em-

Skydivers collide Two skydivers were killed yesterday after they collided during a jump over southern Arizona, collapsing their parachutes and sending them plummeting to the ground, authorities said. Witnesses told investigators that both skydivers had open canopies when they ran into each other about 70m above the ground, police said. The collision occurred at Skydive Arizona, a training facility.

ployees, as a participant in the investigation over a breach of confidentiality after he publicly discussed information related to it. They wouldn’t comment on Rockefeller’s level of alertness around the time of the Sunday morning wreck in the Bronx. Separately, however, two law enforcement officials said the engineer told police at the scene that his mind was wandering before he realised the train was

in trouble, and by then it was too late to do anything about it. One of the officials said Rockefeller described himself as being “in a daze” before the wreck. The officials, who were briefed on the engineer’s comments, weren’t authorised to discuss the investigation publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity. Questions about Rockefeller’s role mounted rapidly after investigators disclosed on

Monday that the Metro-North Railroad train jumped the tracks after going into a curve at 82 mph (132 kph), or nearly three times the 30 mph (48 kph) speed limit. In addition to the four people killed, dozens were hurt. “He caught himself, but he caught himself too late. ... He powered down, he put the train in emergency, but that was six seconds prior to derailment,” Bottalico said. - AP

Apprentice bullied at work committed suicide A teenage apprentice who took his life after being severely bullied at work was deliberately singled out for mistreatment, an inquest has heard. Alec Meikle, 17, hanged himself at his aunt’s house in New Zealand in October 2008, after allegedly enduring months of violent abuse at the hands of

his colleagues at Downer EDI in Bathurst, NSW. Former friend and colleague Samuel Larnach, 24, started working at the train manufacturing company about the time Alec started his apprenticeship. He told an inquest he believes Alec was singled out by workplace bullies and his treat-

Facebook has defended the presence of commercial brands on the popular social networking site, saying users aren’t “revolting” against it. Facebook has released a detailed breakdown of Australian user figures for 2013, showing nine million Aussies visited the site every day. The data, from the site’s 2013 Aussies on Facebook research, showed 12 million Aussies logged on to the site at least once a month. At a media briefing in Sydney, Facebook Australia’s head of measurements and insight, Helen Crossley, said 63 per cent of local users regularly “connected with brands” on the site.

She said Facebook had no problem with that. “We want to help people connect to the brands that matter to them,” Ms Crossley told reporters. “It’s actually OK for brands to be in the news feed ... We don’t really see that people are revolting against that at this stage. She said 69 per cent of users logged on to Facebook to stay in touch with family and friends, with 80 per cent of users accessing it via mobile phone. The data, compiled by research firm TNS, also showed Facebook users spent 12 per cent of their total media consumption time on the site. Thirty-three per cent of users engaged with politics on the site, while 40 per cent posted news articles.

An out-of-this-world sex scene invoking stars, supernovas and statisticians has won IndianAmerican writer Manil Suri the uncoveted Bad Sex In Fiction Award. Suri, a novelist and mathematician, won the annual British prize for a passage in his novel The City Of Devi, in which the characters “streak like superheroes past suns and solar systems, we dive through shoals of quarks and atomic nuclei”. The passage climaxes: “In celebration of our breakthrough fourth star, statisticians the world over rejoice.” - AAP

New plane plant A new manufacturing facility to work on Australia’s fleet of F-35 Joint Strike Fighters has been opened in Adelaide. BAE Systems has spent $10 million on the metal processing plant, which includes a titanium finishing machine that is the only one of its kind in Australia. Chief executive David Allott said the investment was underpinned by the company’s participation in the Joint Strike Fighter supply chain over the next 20 years. “Our involvement in supplying parts for the next generation strike fighter provided the catalyst to invest in expanding our advanced manufacturing capability,” he said.

Fast and Furious Production on Fast & Furious 7 is on hold following the death of star Paul Walker. Shooting on the film had been scheduled to resume this week in Atlanta but was cancelled Monday and Tuesday. A spokesman for Universal Pictures declined to say when shooting will resume. Production on the latest installment of the franchise began in September. While a large portion of the film has been shot, the movie is incomplete. It’s scheduled for release July 11, a date that could be difficult to meet with any lengthy delay. Universal Pictures is expected to go forward with the film, but it has not announced how it will adjust the movie or handle Walker’s unfinished performance. - AAP

Dirtiest river The picturesque La Boca district draws hordes of tourists to stroll its narrow streets lined with colorful buildings and eat at outdoor restaurants. Now it has a new, unwanted claim to fame: The Riachuelo river that flows through the neighbourhood has been named one of the planet’s 10 dirtiest places. Thousands of people live along the river, and environmentalists say a courtordered cleanup of decades of industrial pollution and sewage has made little progress in five years.

performance for the previous financial year.” Key to achieving this result

was growth in gross profit, which rose from $600 per metric tonne in 2012, to $750 per metric tonne in 2013. “We’re on track to achieve the financial targets we set for the FY14 year during the IPO chairman Graeme Milne said. “Our focus is on continuing to increase the proportion of value added products in our ingredients business, and increase the volume of our infant formula and nutritional product sales. “This focus is supported by our growth initiatives which will add lactoferrin production,

blending and packaging of infant formula products and a 40 per cent increase in production capacity.” Synlait’s lactoferrin plant, which is under construction, is on target with production expected to begin in February 2014. Lactoferrin is a high-value minor milk protein that is an increasingly important ingredient in infant formula and adult nutritional products. The company’s new 22,500m² capacity drystore is under construction and is expected to be

commissioned at the end of March, and a blending and canning facility is expected to be commissioned ahead of schedule in June. Resource consent applications have been lodged for a new large scale infant formula spray drying plant for the Synlait Dunsandel site which will provide a large increase in production capacity. During the annual meeting shareholders approved the reelection of Graeme Milne, John Penno and Sam Knowles as Synlait Milk directors.

Compiled by

Meridian Energy’s Te Apiti Wind Farm on the Ruahine Ranges.

Assets sales profits to drop – Govt The Government has cut its estimated earnings from partial asset sales from up to $7 billion to as low as $4.6 billion. Finance Minister Bill English said the Government’s half-year economic and fiscal update this month would revise the estimated range of proceeds from the sales to $4.6b to $5b. That is lower than Treasury’s estimate in 2011 that proceeds from the sales, including Solid Energy, would be $5b to $7b with the $6b mid-point range assumed in Treasury forecasts.

Excluding Solid Energy from the sales, the estimated proceeds were between $4.4b and $6.1b. “So we are on track to be within that range,” Mr English said. Mr English gave the revised estimates before Parliament’s finance and expenditure select committee today. “The revised assumption of share sale proceeds is based on Solid Energy clearly being in no position to be sold anytime soon, and it takes account of other developments and the re-

The Government plans to sell shares in Genesis Energy in the first half of next year, subject to market conditions. - APNZ

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND THANK YOU MID CANTERBURY

O

n behalf of the Ashburton Stadium Complex Trust and the Ashburton District Council, we would like to again acknowledge and thank everyone who made possible the outstanding community fundraising contribution of over $5 million for the EA Networks Centre. It’s been an amazing last 2 years of generosity, and focussed work by the Trust and Council for particularly the last 3 years. Foremost in this Christmas season we wanted to personally acknowledge all donors, large and small, over 450 in total! However, to do this we need a full 2 Guardian Pages, and our thanks to Bruce Bell, Nikki Cameron and the Guardian Team for providing this extra space. It’s also fitting in this Christmas wrap-up that we acknowledge stalwarts of the Mid Canterbury community, who have given so much to local sport. Roger and Pauline Paterson have recently agreed to donate an electronic scoring system for the main court – thanks Roger and Pauline for this support. Lastly, it is also truly heartening to drive along Riverside Drive and see the progress being made with the construction of the Centre, and we’re pleased to be able to show some recent photos on site – all is on track for the Centre Opening in early 2015. Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas.

From left to right, Mayor Angus McKay, Ashburton Guardian General Manager Nikki Cameron, Ashburton Stadium Complex Trust Deputy Chairman Brian Leadley, Fundraising Chairman Chris Robertson, Ashburton District Council Chief Executive Andrew Dalziel, and Ashburton Stadium Complex Chairman Maurice Myers.

oger and Pauline Paterson & Patersons Funeral Services have serviced the business sector of Ashburton for over thirty one years, and sports administration for over forty three years, and they wanted to give something back to the community who have supported them both over these many years. Pauline has personally researched the latest and best in electronic scoreboards, and their contribution to the new EA Networks Centre will be a fully operational electronic scoring system, which displays all team member names with individual points scored. It comes with a video camera and is compatible for all indoor stadium users. Roger and Pauline have also been strong advocates of the new Centre for many years. As they discussed with Trust members, “we can’t have the latest Stadium without a scoreboard to match on main court”. On behalf of the Ashburton Stadium Complex Trust, thank you Roger and Pauline for this gift and all you’ve done.

Roger and Pauline Paterson.

Gallery comes alive with colour By SuSan SandyS

susan.s@theguardian.co.nz

Interior walls of the Ashburton Art Gallery look like they have never looked before, as Mid Canterbury youngsters paint directly on to them. And if you want to see the work under way, you will have to be quick, because soon the colourful murals will be painted over with thick grey paint, and a top coat of white. “It’s temporary art,” curator Shirin Khosraviani said.

“It’s more about the experience.” Children from schools and preschools throughout the district were invited to paint the walls of the gallery for the annual district school exhibition. It is the first and last time the walls will ever see such action, as by the time next year’s exhibition rolls around the gallery will have moved to its new building. The theme children were given for their murals was Our Evolving New Zealand Culture,

and different sections of wall have been allocated to different schools and preschools. This week it has been the turn of Tinwald School pupils to paint their interpretation of the theme, and the children have loved every minute of it. “The children get to experience being a working artist,” teacher Monica Genet said. On December 14 at 1.30pm to 3.30pm there will be a family fun day at the gallery to celebrate the finished works.

Award winning writer and illustrator David Elliot, who has an exhibition underway at the gallery, will be in attendance and read his new book Henry’s Map. And after that the grey paint will come out, and gallery staff will get to work, pulling off the collage items from the walls, and brushing and rolling over the colourful art work that remains. “It will be a bit disheartening because they have worked so hard,” said one of the staff members.

If you have an event coming up and you think it might be suited to the Arts Diary, please let us know by contacting Susan Sandys on 307-7961 or susan.s@ theguardian.co.nz

■ NISSAN PATHFINDER TI

Adventurous streak FINALE

PATHFINDER TI ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■

Roger Hart ROAD TEST

T

ook three other wise (?) long-legged blokes on a 220km road trip within the county to assess Nissan’s new, stylish, built in the USA, seven-seat, five metre long Pathfinder. Shingle experiences include the newly graded Zig-zag and then the seemingly sparingly graded road to the intake for the Coleridge power station. Pathfinders now ride on a new monocoque platform, so are completely different to the previous Navara based, model with its ladder frame chassis and truck-like/off-road attitude to life in general. While they retain traces of the previous model’s DNA, all versions are much plusher and family friendly. They have sleek, stylish exteriors and decidedly flexible interiors with impressive comfort and space. As well as all having lots of standard equipment they deliver a very much car-like experience for both the driver and passengers. So while there’s still an adventurous streak still there for the ST and Ti’s with Nissan’s All-Mode 4WD system, particularly so with its proven ability to safely and surely do the job on shingle roads and formed tracks, the ground clearance of 165mm determines how adventurous you can be. And perhaps confirms Pathfinder now focuses on being more of an very adaptable, life style cross-over. The entry level ST costs $54,990 in 2WD and $59,990 with 4WD. The top of the range, 4WD only Ti; as reported on, is $65,990. To the ST’s triple-zone climate control, 7 inch multimedia screen, 6 speaker sound system and 18 inch alloys (with tyre

pressure monitoring) halogen headlights, privacy glass, electrically adjustable drivers seat, trip computer, reversing camera, rear sensors, push button start/stop and more, the Ti adds more including heated leather seats, front sunroof plus a large rear panoramic glass roof and fog lights. Sat-nav however is an after market option. All use the 3.5 litre V6 petrol engine. It produces 193 kW and 325 Nm and drives through a 6-stage, CVT auto. Although there’s no lowrange, it does have a selectable tow mode. And while the V6 can’t match the previous diesel model’s 450Nm of torque, because of the efficient CVT, that it is now some 300kg lighter, and much more aerodynamic it has better acceleration, overtakes with

SUV buyers now expect more and more and the comfortable, good looking seven-seat Pathfinder delivers lots with its impressive comfort, versatility great handling and performance. The collective “we” reckon its a very likeable, on road, family vehicle.

ease and is an effortless performer. Stated overall fuel use for the Ti is 10.2 L/100km, which is obviously achievable but for our expedition the computer showed 13.2L/100km. While there’s no diesel option a hybrid version is due mid2014. With its 2900mm long wheelbase, Pathfinder is very spacious inside and can, as the test vehicle’s billboard-like sign-age shows, accommodate seven adults, albeit with limited luggage. Up front, where the dash and controls have a quality look and feel to them, there’s more than ample leg/headroom, and equally generous space in the middle row, where the seat-slide system enables a limo-like setting. Those clever seats, as well split/folding do this in a man-

ner that even with a booster seat in place they fold/move sufficiently forward to allow easy access to the third row. The two individual third row seats fold flat into the floor, resulting in a huge luggage area. While those two seats are certainly adult capable, I’d prefer shorter journeys therein with six other adults on board. On the bitumen, coarse or smooth, the Pathfinder provides a rather luxurious and quiet ride. So the pleasant surprise is that the all-round, independent suspension, then repeats this on shingle, for it smooths out bumps, ruts and potholes with decided ease. What’s more, it is tidy and accurate through corners. Of course there’s a little body movement with press-on driving, but all aboard were most impressed with the Pathfinder’s ability, particularly so with the

ride in shingle and composure when pushed through corners thereon. Did all the bitumen driving in 2WD but dialled up 4WD “Auto” for shingle work. 4WD can be locked in as required for adverse conditions. The speed sensitive electric power steering with its 11.8 metre turning circle does its job very well for both parking and then at cruise provides consistent weighting and sufficient feedback in corners, meaning it could be driven very accurately and confidently along potholed, winding shingle roads. The brakes too proved great on the varied surfaces and the hill start assistance system did its job very well with a steep shingle start. Suggest that for lots of shingle driving the Pathfinder will be best fitted with front mud-flaps to match those on the rear.

Turbo doubles the power

Nissan Juke Turbo

How about this for a garage-mate for the Pathfinder – a turbo powered, all-wheel drive Juke. Power is from the same direct injection, turbo-charged 1.6 litre used in the Pulsar SSS and with its 140 kW and 240Nm of torque gives this Juke almost twice as much power as the normal car. Plus it has an all-wheel drive system

that not only splits drive up to 50:50 between the front and rear wheels, but can also split torque from side-to-side across the rear axle to help reduce understeer and enhance the car’s cornering feel. Complete with heated front seats, a five-inch colour LCD display, sat-nav and rear view camera, the Juke Turbo is priced at $41,990.

Clarrie Brake then demonstrated some ornamental turning which is the application of geometric designs to turn objects. He turned silver pine into a cylinder carefully finishing the end grain, or top, of a lidded container. He then fitted his O.T device to the lathe and proceeded to make the spiral pattern by carefully moving the cutter precisely the same depth each cut, his indexing head moved for each cut. Making a jam chuck the top was forced into this opening and the procedure repeated but with a different design. It was good to see how this was done; reminding us of the many examples of this technique is seen in the Lynn Historical Museum. Thanks Clarrie for showing us another branch of wood turning.

College Cricket Club 20/20 started last weekend but first, if you see Jack Meyrick ask him who woke him up after he slept in for last weekend’s trip to Christchurch; we think his mum normally does but she was away! Gold took on Lauriston and restricted them to 105/7 with Gareth Hunt picking up three wickets, Josh Buchanan and Andrew Jopson getting two each. Gold lost Bailey King in the second over but then Buchanan 57 no (off 45 balls) and Hunt 47 no (off 31 balls) saw them home for a nine wicket win. Gold took on Green in their second game and Green’s innings of 123 was built around Luke Tod’s 84 off only 50 balls, the only other one to record double figures was Connor Wilson with 17. Buchanan picked up two wickets while Hunt, King, Jayden Reid, Sam Turner and Harry Watson all picked up a wicket. Gold were cruising when Andrew Jopson (27) and Zach Naldrett (42) put on 50 for the first wicket, but regular wickets stemmed the flow with Andrew Tait (21) and Watson with a quick fire 12 saw Gold home in the 19th over. Harry Ferguson claimed 2 while Dylan Shore, William Tod, Jonathon Regaldo and Todd Gray snared one each. Green had earlier taken on Red with Red batting first and getting through to 108/8 with Bradley Horrell the main contributor with 40 odd. Devam Pandya picked up three, William Tod two, Shore and Ferguson got one apiece. Green chased the runs down for the loss of 5 wickets with Harry Ferguson (41) and Kane Freeman (24) the main contributors. Red also lost their second game (to Methven) but Bradley Horrell continued his good day with another 30 odd, Michael Burton made a fine 48 no while Blair Snowball smashed his way to 32. Liam O’Connor picked up three wickets when they fielded.

Sunday Adrian Kemp and Brent Mason won the Hampstead Green in the Sub Centre Pairs, they then went to Asburton club to play the final against Michael Lawson and Darren Turner. MSA Outdoor Bowling Club Weather has once again interfered with some games; but able to play was the final of the Ladies Championship Triples which was played in very cold and overcast conditions. The winners were Robyn Parkin (s) Marie Harnett and Margaret Watson in a closely fought game against Shirley Taylor(s) Cynthia Dudley and Kath Muir the score 21—14, this was not an indication of the game as both teams played well in spite of the unpleasant conditions. Congratulation to the Champions. Weather once again won the game of Rowntree with cancellations through out. Championship Singles commenced on Tuesday when Robyn Parkin did battle with Shirley Taylor and won 21—13. Afternoon match was Joan Hardy verses Rene Devereux which provided a very entertaining “Battle”. This game was very close for all 21 ends with never more than 2 points separating contestants at any one time. The final victory went to Joan 22—18 but a credit to Rene who kept Joan on her toes. The Men’s 2/4’s played at Leeston on Saturday with some surprise results. Robin Petrie(s) Tony Inwood, Barry Stott and Ron Cockburn lost, but to be fair I will not print score (What happened?) Dave Muir (s) Guildford Lane John Argyle and Brian Lynn won (again what happened?) Joan Hardy (s) took her team of Marie Harnett, Rene Devereux and Helen Dowdle to play in the Ladies Charlene Trophy at Allenton. They were successful in their first game and then the wheels fell off, but a very enjoyable day was had and they were happy to have participated. Sunday M.S.A. Bowls celebrated their Christmas Pot Luck Tea. To those who attended thank you for a most sumptuous meal. To those who were otherwise engaged you don’t know what you missed. I think a catering business could be started and forget the bowls (more profitable) Thank you All. Entertainment was provided by Quiz Master Kath who posed a question which ran rampant by those present. No one came up with the answer and therefore did not win the prize a free ice-cream. Hours later a sleepy Kath was disturbed from her “after Function” sleep by a phone call from cross word Wendy with the answer AUSTIN POWERS. Thank you all for thinking and sorry Wendy late entries don’t count. TEA DUTY: December 10th—12th Lorraine Boud —Margaret Watson.

■ STEINLAGER RUGBY AWARDS

In brief

Local pair strong contenders By Jonathan Leask

jonathan.l@theguardian.co.nz

Mid Canterbury has a strong chance of picking up a Heartland Player of the Year award at tonight’s Steinlager Rugby awards in Auckland. Mid Canterbury has two of the three nominees with Jon Dampney and Dwayne Burrows up for the award. Dampney and Burrows each scored a try in Mid Canterbury’s 26-20 Meads Cup final win over North Otago, capping strong seasons from each. It was Dampney’s first season as captain and the rangy loose forward led the Hammers to a top of the table finish and then the subsequent maiden Meads Cup win. Burrows started the season

on the wing and finished up playing in the midfield but was consistently a handful with ball in hand wherever he was, finishing the season with six tries while his surging runs were responsible for several more. They were also both selected for the Heartland XV and each scored a try in both of the side’s tour victories. Dampney may have the upper hand after being named the Mid Canterbury Heartland Player of the year, but the Steinlager Awards have their own judging panel that could see things differently. It would cap an amazing season for Burrows, winning the Watters Cup with Rakaia, the Meads Cup win and his Heartland XV selection while Damp-

Mid Canterbury’s Jon Dampney (left) and Dwayne Burrows are both nominated for Heartland player of the year.

ney has been a solid performer throughout his 93 appearances for the province but showed great maturity in the captaincy. Both make strong cases for the award.

The other nominee, South Canterbury’s Andrew Scarlett also makes a strong contender, leading South Canterbury to their maiden Lochore Cup win this season.

Team New Zealand have been boosted in their bid to mount another America’s Cup challenge, with Glenn Ashby announcing his intention to stay with the syndicate. Speaking at the Sailing World Cup in Melbourne, Ashby confirmed he had been approached by Iain Murray’s Team Australia but only after he had already re-signed with Team New Zealand. The Australian was one of the most important members of Dean Barker’s crew at this year’s failed challenge in San Francisco, playing a key role in helping the team adjust to the catamarans opted for by defenders Oracle.

Black Sticks humbled The New Zealand women’s hockey team will face Olympic champions the Netherlands in the quarterfinals of the World League Final in Tucuman, Argentina, after going down 5-1 to Australia in their final pool game yesterday. “It is a disappointing performance - our basic skills were not good enough and we were outplayed by Australia in most aspects of the game,” said head coach Mark Hager. “In our defensive circle play, we miss-trapped too many balls which gave Australia easy opportunities. Obviously, we are now in a tricky position where it will be a very tough challenge for us against the Dutch in the quarter-final.” - APNZ

Wellington Phoenix midfielder Carlos Hernandez will be out for at least a week due to a 2.5cm tear in his quadriceps and will miss tomorrow night’s game against the Glory in Perth. The Phoenix began their lengthy road trip to Western Australia yesterday and coach Ernie Merrick was left to contemplate his midfield options for the outing against Perth. Albert Riera will need a late fitness test on his tight groin. - APNZ

Canterbury fight back Canterbury produced an astonishing spell of bowling to send Wellington reeling on the first day of a Plunket Shield match at Rangiora yesterday. After electing to bat, Canterbury were bowled out for a disappointing 223 - Tom Latham scoring the bulk of the runs with a careful 92 off 167 balls. Canterbury’s opening bowlers Hamish Bennett and Logan van Beek worked in tandem nicely to have the Firebirds in all sorts of trouble. Opener Stephen Murdoch, with 10, was the only visiting batsman to reach double figures. - APNZ

■ OPINION

Stepping up to the big time

W

atching the All Black Sevens in action this past weekend put a couple of things into perspective. Despite having to watch them get slaughtered by a rampant Fijian side, who just had to pick that game to produce their best, most Fijian-like effort in a decade, Dubai was another round of the sevens circus that produced some stunning exhibitions of skills on the rugby paddock. The perspective? A week earlier we’d seen the home-grown version of this game, with the South Island championships in Timaru, and we’d seen our own Mid Canterbury boys going toe-to-toe with the big guys. And they emerged with distinction, not only qualifying for the nationals, but very nearly knocking over a powerful Tasman side in the battle for third and fourth (if only for the unpredictable bounce of the rugby ball they would have). Sure, they can’t hack it with the likes of Canterbury, possibly that could have something to do with the fact that the Cantabs have thousands of classy players to

Steve Devereux MY SHOUT

choose from, while Mid Canterbury coach Mark Cousins has five senior teams to have a look at. But it was that Canterbury side that took the tournament honours, and the main reason for that was a man who didn’t make Gordon Tietjens’ national squad this time round. Mark Jackman was head and shoulders the best player on show in Timaru; he was captain, playmaker, tactician, goalkicker, probably chief cook and bottlewasher too. In the All Black Sevens set-up he’s just one of the guys, doing everything efficiently and within the team framework, you don’t realise quite how good each and every one of them are; and that’s a clear demonstration of the gulf in class when you take the big step up.

Supreme irony - he should be in OUR side! * * * * Great to see our top batsmen back among the runs, and greater to see Ross Taylor and Brendon McCullum warmly congratulating each other on their respective centuries (well, it certainly looked genuine enough!) And my favourite (not) commentator has added another negative string to his bow; yesterday ‘Doully’ revealed himself as another Cantab hater. Chris Cairns congratulated Kieran Read for his well-deserved award as the best rugby player in the world this week; Doully instantly and vociferously launched into a rant that Canterbury was only any good because they poached all of their players, and Read played all his early rugby in Drury. How bitter and twisted is that? Cairns is good in the comm box though, very good. Calm, measured and informed commentary, dry and witty comments on all the peripheral action; hopefully they manage to keep him on as a regular, important part of the team.

■ RUGBY LEAGUE

Warriors start next season in Sydney The Warriors will kick off their 2014 NRL season in Sydney, with a match against the Parramatta Eels on March 9, before hosting their first three Auckland-based home games of the year at Eden Park. Today’s announcement of next season’s NRL draw re-

vealed the Warriors will play 13 of their 24 regular season games at home with Auckland, Hamilton and Wellington all scooping fixtures. The first home game for the Warriors at Mt Smart Stadium isn’t until round 12, when they host the Knights on June 1. The

Warriors play only eight games at their Penrose home next season. The Warriors will also travel to Wellington, where their fourth home game from the first nine rounds is against Wests Tigers at Westpac Stadium on March 30. - APNZ

Taylor talked of Crowe’s importance to him as he goes about the business of locking himself in among New Zealand’s finest batsmen. So it was appropriate that Taylor’s unbeaten 217 on the second day at University Oval should finish with his test average having bumped up to 45.36 - exactly the same as New Zealand’s finest batsman.

In the course of his 8h 11min marathon, Taylor moved his average from a highly respectable 42.81 up past Andrew Jones (44.27), Glenn Turner (44.64) and Mark Richardson (44.77) to sit alongside his mentor and behind only lefthander John F. Reid of the 1980s among those with 30 or more test innings. That has a certain symmetry to it, guiding hand and student sitting alongside each other in the statistics, albeit a 29-yearold pupil well ensconced as the current team’s most proficient batsman. By stumps New Zealand’s 609

for nine declared had shut the West Indians out of the game. Put a large part of that situation down to Taylor, whose last test century was 14 innings ago in Colombo, in his final test as captain. It was also New Zealand’s most recent victory. Now Taylor’s innings has helped his successor, Brendon McCullum, take a giant stride towards ending a year-long drought of test wins on his watch. Not that Taylor would necessarily think of it like that. He will feel a deep satisfaction at a job well done. He began yesterday on 101 and

had a life at 131, when Kieran Powell dropped him at short leg off spinner Shane Shillingford. He had to work through periods of the day when it wasn’t quite flowing, but kept his mind on the job and was handsomely rewarded. Neil Wagner was with him when he reached 200. “I jogged over to him and he was very calm and quiet. All he said was ‘thanks for batting with me’,” Wagner said. “I’m stoked for him, he’s a class performer.” The richest praise came from West Indians’ Tino Best. He almost had Taylor out for two and

quipped that no one will remember that, “but as a bowler I remember that”. “The fellow is a class act,” Best said. “He’s a very humble person and I’ve admired him for a long time. The last year or so he’s been going through a tough period in New Zealand, but he showed a really good attitude and his concentration was immense.” Taylor, now with nine test hundreds - trailing only Crowe on 17, John Wright on 12 and Nathan Astle on 11 and level with Stephen Fleming - could have his best years ahead of him.
