Students trapped on Mt Hutt BY SUSAN SANDYS

Mount Hutt College parents looking forward to their children returning from being trapped on Mt Hutt last night had their hopes dashed. The college kept in touch with parents of 270 students, stranded all day on the mountain by poor visibility and wind-driven snow, last night via text and email. Teachers advised it was “very likely” the seven buses which had transported students and teachers to the mountain would be able to make it down the access road some time between 9pm and midnight. However at 9.20pm another message came through, informing that it was “too windy” to come off the mountain and buses were likely to return 3am to 5am. Students told the Guardian via phone that they were bunking down on the cafe floor, using their jerseys and jackets as pillows, and would try to get some sleep. Mt Hutt management had told them the early morning hours could be the only time for them to try and make it off the mountain, as tomorrow further bad weather had been forecast. Students were likely to get more sleep than worried parents whose plans for a late night pick up were replaced by the expectation of an early morning call. ents on arrival back at the college, and a meeting venue would be set up in the school hall. Mt Hutt posted a message on its Facebook page at 9.30pm, informing that staff would continue to assess conditions throughout the night. “As soon as it is safe for vehicles to go down the access road
we will get everyone safely off the mountain. In the meantime rest assured that everyone here is safe and warm and about to get some rest. It is time for everyone here to get some shuteye.” A total of 316 guests were trapped on the mountain after the access road had to be closed
at midday. Mt Hutt ski area manager James McKenzie said in a press release late afternoon that while management had been aware of an approaching front and a poor forecast earlier in the day, the situation had deteriorated “pretty quickly”. “We made a decision to close the mountain at 11.30 this
morning and a number of people made it safely down the road,” Mr McKenzie said. “However at midday a combination of new snow blowing around and wind gusts of up to 45 kilometres per hour meant visibility along the upper section of the access road deteriorated to the extent we closed it.”
