THE INDEPENDENT VOICE OF MID CANTERBURY
Hit and run on R18 shop BY MYLES HUME
MYLES.H@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
Controversial R18 shop owner Garry Davies is on the hunt for four thieves who rammed open his Rakaia shop door with a 4WD before fleeing with weapons, bongs and lighters. The Adult Thingz shop owner has condemned the actions of the alleged offenders, but says he is not surprised the masked men targeted his shop with it being the only retailer in Mid Canterbury to sell legal highs. Senior Constable Mike Jackson, of Rakaia, said the incident, on Sunday November 24, began when the offenders stole a Toyota Land Cruiser from a Maronan Road property about 2.30am before driving to the adult store. Video footage from the 30 second “smash and grab” showed the offenders ramming the front door open with the 4WD before three of them piled into the shop while the getaway driver waited outside. Mr Davies said one offender tried to smash a glass cabinet containing synthetic cannabis, but failed. His associates frantically ran around the store, taking lighters, a
sword, nun-chucks, smoking utensils and other items. Mr Jackson said Ashburton police were called to the incident, but the offenders had already left the scene. The stolen vehicle was found by a member of the public at the Baker Road and Thompsons Track intersection later that day. Mr Davies hoped the offenders would be brought to justice. “There’s always going to be somebody who does this, and these were stupid boys who didn’t know what they were doing and who didn’t know the shop at all,” Mr Davies said. He said he was “not surprised at all” his shop was targeted, as legal highs had the same appeal to criminals as cigarettes, alcohol and money. Mr Davies said the shop had been repaired since, and he wants to have bollards installed on the footpath out front to stop similar events from happening. Mr Jackson said police were still seeking information about the at-large offenders, and any sightings of the vehicle on Sunday, November 24 about 3am. Rakaia police can be contacted on 302-7009.

Thousands of sci-fi fans were captivated by an Omokoroa man’s homemade Dalek which attracted an astronomical following on Trade Me. Dave Logan never thought his replica alien would generate so much attention. The life-size replica of a Dalek, copied from the television show Doctor Who notched up about 20,000 page views on Trade Me. A stunned Mr Logan said more than 600 people had added the auction to their watchlist. The auction closed on Sunday and the Dalek sold for $2500, which was Mr Logan’s reserve price. He said he would have liked to have received more for it. “I think I was expecting to attract some hardcore Doctor Who fans but that didn’t really happen.”

Christmas Grinch captured Police say they’ve caught a Grinch who was captured on surveillance video stealing Christmas decorations outside a south Philadelphia house last month. Authorities released surveillance video - complete with cartoon images from Dr. Seuss’ “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” - of two people taking decorations from the house about 2.15am November 26. Police say 45-year-old Marie Amari was arrested at her nearby home on Saturday, and the stolen decorations were found inside. She is charged with theft and related offences. Police are still looking for a second suspect.

Koala mating call excites scientists The extraordinarily deep mating call of the male koala about 20 times lower than would be expected for an animal that size - are produced by what researchers say is a “novel vocal organ” outside its voice box. Writing in the latest issue of the US-based journal Current Biology, researchers from Britain, Germany, Australia and Austria say their findings are the first evidence in a terrestrial mammal of an organ other than the voice box, or larynx, that is specialised for sound production. Further studies are needed to determine whether the adaptation is unique to koalas. The source of the low-pitched bellow is an extra pair of large vocal folds in the soft palate where the oral and nasal cavities connect. Similar to donkeys, male koalas produce their bellow both while inhaling and exhaling. The sound resembles snoring during the former and belching during the latter, says Benjamin Charlton, a biologist at the University of Sussex in Britain and lead author of the study.

Keef turns 70 December 18 marks one of rock ‘n roll’s most unexpected milestones: Keith Richards turns 70. The Rolling Stone’s life is probably one of the world’s greatest rock stories: a bacchanalia of drugs, alcohol, sex, music and myth-making. In 1967, a legendary drugs bust at Richards’ Redlands home in England resulted in jail terms for both him and Mick Jagger, although the guitarist’s sentence was quashed on appeal. For Richards, this marked the beginning of a close relationship with drugs, epitomised by his remark: “My body was sort of a laboratory. I wanted to see what I could do with it.” Richards has been defying expectations since 1973, when the New Musical Express drew up a list of 10 rock stars most likely to die and put him at number one. The UK music paper kept him in the top spot for 10 years. He spent much of the 1970s in a heroin fog.

A study of farts on planes was among the stranger pieces of scientific research published in the last 12 months. It’s made the Australian Science Media Centre’s top picks for the most bizarre research projects of 2013. Danish surgeons led the way with a study of airline flatulence, confirming what many already suspect: pressurised cabins make us gassy - and it’s better out than in. To combat the problem, they suggested slashing the amount of fibre in inflight meals. On a related note, American researchers investigated the human sense of smell. They discovered that, in the same way the human tongue can detect five distinct types of taste, the nose can detect 10 distinct types of odour. They range from “fragrant” and “fruity” at one extreme, to “pungent” and “decayed” at the other, with “popcorn” filling another category altogether.

■ ASHBURTON CHILD PORN CASE
Porn charges ‘tip of iceberg’ BY MYLES HUME
MYLES.H@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
An Ashburton man jailed on child porn charges is just the tip of the iceberg, but major operations are in place to bring down those dealing in the illegal industry. The three-year jail sentence handed down to 57-year-old Ashburton man Rudolf Wilhelmus de Jonge on Monday has satisfied Detective Senior Sergeant David Harvey of the Canterbury child protection team. But since joining the special-
ist policing unit in 2011 he has been “shocked” by the volume of objectionable material being accessed by New Zealanders, many yet to be caught. He said Mr de Jonge’s prosecution should serve as a reminder to those involved in the illegal industry that the law may catch up as New Zealand police national headquarters work with overseas organisations to identify local offenders. ECPAT Child Alert director Alan Bell, who works to eliminate child porn, trafficking and
prostitution, said major search engines Google and Microsoft had recently implemented child porn filters. Nationally, the Department of Internal Affairs has a digital child exploitation filter which has blocked access to hundreds of child porn sites. However, the fact there were more than one million attempts a month to access these sites was a major issue, Mr Bell said. “It’s a concerning number that basically comes to down to supply and demand . . . this whole
industry is money driven,” he said. He added “better access to the internet is making it easier”, and if child porn offenders were determined to get around online barrier they would. Mr Bell said those involved in the child porn industry were sometimes addicts, and trends showed victims were getting younger, the material extremely violent and more young boys were being exploited. “Some people regard them as virtual images, but they are real
children that feel real pain and suffer. “I think there’s a reluctance to acknowledge it’s going on here in New Zealand and maybe the public don’t like such a sensitive and embarrassing issue brought out in the daylight. “People don’t fully realise the degree this stuff is being viewed.” Mr Harvey said one of the biggest concerns for police was “when does the downloading of material turn into physical offending”.

A worker hoses down rubble as demolition work continues on earthquake damaged parts of Ashburton Hospital. The rubble of the former store area was being loaded for removal before the rest of the outpatients building goes. In earlier years, this building used to house visiting house surgeons. All the demolition work was due to finish about the end of January, according to Ashburton & Rural Health Services general manager Garth Bateup. The slight delay was due to the slower recovery time as material was taken for recycling. The former outpatients building along Elizabeth Street is down and therapy services (at right of photo) were still to go.

■ ASHBURTON HOUSE PRICES
■ METHVEN BOARD
Houses still affordable
Luke-warm response to Methven by-election
By Sue newman
sue.n@theguardian.co.nz
Ashburton’s average house price might have hit $310,000 but the district is one of the more affordable places in New Zealand in which to buy a home. Quotable Value (QV) on Monday released details on house sales across New Zealand and while Ashburton’s average selling price had increased by 2.2 per cent over the past three months, the district is still well up New Zealand’s affordability listing. Home affordability is measured against the median wage and Ashburton scores well on that front too. This year’s Census shows the median wage for the district is $32,900. It would take 9.43 median incomes to buy the average priced house. Getting on the property ladder in the Ashburton District, however, is a relatively easy job compared to other parts of New Zealand, where the cost

of a home can be as high as 19 times the median wage. In the South Island, the further south you choose to live, the more likely you are to be able to afford a home, with the exception of the Queenstown –
Lakes District. As a country, New Zealand does not rate well in housing affordability, with 18.85 median incomes needed to buy the average home, priced by QV at $460,067.
In London it takes 11 average incomes to reach the average house price of $777,000 and 13 in Vancouver and Sydney where the average house prices are $687,000 and $791,970, respectively.
Rules change for new home builds By Sue newman
sue.n@theguardian.co.nz
It might be too early to measure the impact of the tight new rules around lending criteria for homes, but that hasn’t stopped the Government from changing those rules. The new loan to value ratio lending rules (LVR) came into effect on October 1, restricting banks lending to clients with less than 20 per cent deposit on a home purchase to just 10 per cent of their total residential lending book. Two months down the track, the Reserve Bank has stepped
in to make a change, exempting lending on new builds from those restrictions. The move comes after concerns were raised by the building industry that it would be hard hit by the restrictions. There were also fears that the limits could jeopardise the Government’s target of 5000 new home builds a year. It’s a move that’s been welcomed by Ashburton’s building industry, with Bradfords’ director Mark Wilson saying the loan limits had the potential to reduce the number of new homes built around the district.
“A lot of new home builders struggle to get the money for everything such as landscaping, it comes down to the last dollar and they have to budget very tightly because a lot of build prices don’t allow for curtains or blinds,” he said. Jennian Homes manager Chris Watson said the changed lending criteria had already been felt by one or two of his clients who had been in discussions over a new build and had started planning and looking at finance. The rules changed and overnight they were left needing to
find more money for a deposit, he said. “It’s certainly good news they’ve changed this. It was something we had concerns about. We don’t have a high percentage of clients in this category but there are enough that we’d have noticed it.” The number of younger people who were opting to make their first home a new home was growing and if the LVR limits had remained in place for new builds this would have had an impact on the industry across the board, Mr Watson said.

Coach ‘distant’ before disappearance A missing Australian tennis coach seemed “distant and spiritual” before he wandered into the Waikato River in the early hours of Sunday, police say. Paul Arber, 38, was last seen swimming in the river at 4am on Sunday by a pair of passersby, police revealed yesterday. Waikato Field Crime Manager Detective Inspector Karl Thornton said the pair convinced Mr Arber to get out of the water. “Walking down from the bridge to the river bank the pair have talked a man in shorts out of the water who told them his name was Paul and he was in Hamilton for a tennis tournament. “The pair offered to take him back to his accommodation but after he has gone with them up to the bridge he changed his mind
and walked off, back to the river.” Mr Thornton said Mr Arber’s behaviour was out of character. “There was not any one thing that caused specific concerns but such behaviours present a challenge for searchers trying to map out possible behavioural patterns which could assist us in finding Paul.” As a result of the new information, the riverbanks would be searched again using a boat and the police Eagle helicopter, Mr Thornton said. Mr Arber’s parents, Sam and Richelle, had arrived from Australia and were “extremely concerned” and worried their son was alone in an unfamiliar city and may need help. - APNZ

Methven Community Board chairperson Liz McMillan is “very confident” at least one board candidate will be nominated for the coming board byelection. There are just three-and-ahalf days to go before nominations close at the Ashburton District Council, at noon on Monday, and none have yet been received. However, Ms McMillan said often nominations did not come in until the last minute. “This time of the year it’s a very busy time, and time gets away on you,” Ms McMillan said. She had been aware of two mums who were interested in standing, but one had recently been disappointed to find out she could not stand as she was not a New Zealand citizen. However, there was one other mum she was aware of, and she and another board member were going to talk to the two women some time today. The board members would not be doing any arm-twisting however, but “just giving them a bit of advice”. “They are both very passionate about the community,” Ms McMillan said. She agreed the response from potential board candidates at the election and now the byelection had been luke-warm. She said many in the town did not realise how important the board was, and how much it achieved in the community. “It does make a difference,” she said. The by-election will be conducted by postal vote, its official date being February 11. The Registrar of Electors for the Rangitata electorate, Carol Johnston, is reminding Methven residents to make sure they are correctly enrolled. “To get your voting papers in the mail you need to be enrolled or have your details updated no later than 16 December.” People can get an enrolment form by calling 0800 36 76 56, by freetexting their name and address to 3676, by requesting or downloading one from the elections website at www.elections.org.nz or at any PostShop.

■ MID CANTERBURY SCHOOL BUS SPEED LIMIT
Speeding driver faces court By MyleS HuMe
Myles.h@thegusrdian.co.nz
A Mid Canterbury truck driver to appear in court serves as a sign motorists are still ignoring the 20km/h speed limit when passing stationary school buses, the district’s road policing boss says. Since beginning a crackdown on local drivers speeding past school buses in October, Mid Canterbury Highway Patrol Sergeant Stephen Burgerhout said speeds had dropped, but many motorists were still break-
ing the law. “Drivers still need to slow down even further. There are still drivers who are ignoring the message. “We have one local truck driver who will appear in court this month after having his licence suspended; he was travelling 70km/h past a stationary school bus.” The truck driver exceeded the 20km/h speed limit either way past a school bus dropping off children by 50km/h, making his offending serious enough for him to go to court.
Those exceeding the limit by up to 49km/h are likely to be fined and served demerit points. The police crackdown comes during a Mid Canterbury trial that saw advertising campaigns and flashing LED 20km/h signs installed on the back of Pearson’s Coachlines buses as part of an Either Way it’s 20k programme. It is an initiative that is already attracting national interest, and may one day be rolled out across the country. New Zealand Transport Agen-
cy (NZTA) safety programme co-ordinator Lee Wright said preliminary data showed a dramatic drop in the average speeds of motorists passing stationary school buses from 80km/h to 40km/h on open roads during the past two months. “While this is a great start, drivers need to be aware that the legal speed limit is 20km/h - in both directions,” Ms Wright said. Pearson’s Coachlines manager Mark Cook said his drivers had noticed 90 per cent of driv-
ers were now adhering to the 20km/h law. He said there was no excuse for drivers not to slow to the limit as bus drivers flicked on hazard lights well before pulling over, and sometimes following drivers did the same. “There’s plenty there to alert them, plenty of time for drivers to react. If you’re concentrating on the road and what you’re doing you should be ok, nine times out of 10 it’s those looking at a nearby paddock or somewhere else who cause problems.”
■ ASHBURTON EVENT CENTRE WINS
National award for event centre By SuSan SandyS
susan.s@theguardian.co.nz
The Ashburton Trust Event Centre has made a name for itself among the big boys of performance venues nationwide. The event centre was the only South Island venue to win an award at the recent Entertainment Venues Association of New Zealand (EVANZ) awards. It received the Tompkins Wake Excellence In Customer Service award. All the other awards went to either New Plymouth or Auckland, where the Vector Arena took out the Ticket Direct Supreme Venue of the Year Award. “It came as a complete surprise,” event centre manager Roger Farr said. “We were up against some amazing venues with large staff numbers and even bigger budgets,” Mr Farr said. “Hell, I was just happy to have been announced as a finalist, but was truly blown away when we were announced as the winner.”
Event centre manager Roger Farr (right) accepts the award from sponsor representative Scott Ratuki, who introduced the presentation by singing a ukulele-backed song he had written. Photo suPPlied
He said it was the event centre’s staff and volunteers which made the centre the best at what it did. “To stand out in a crowd of bigger venues, you have to be excellent and you can’t do it without a team committed to achieving a common goal, who
enjoy what they do and have fun doing it,” Mr Farr said. The $7.1 million event centre opened five years ago and has been a vibrant cultural hub in the community since, attracting a wide range of top national, international and local acts.

■ poverty in mid canterbury
In brief
Living below poverty line By Sue Newman
sue.n@theguardian.co.nz
The number of adults in the Ashburton District trying to raise a family on an income that is below the poverty line, could be as high as 2000. In a report released this week on child poverty in New Zealand, the number of children aged 0–17 years of age believed to be living in poverty (defined as where family income is below 60 per cent of the national median) is believed to be about 265,000, one in four. According to this year’s Census, Ashburton has about 7500 children aged between 0 and 17, (The Census measures age brackets from 0–19 and gives a total of 1794 15–19-year-olds.) This indicates there could about 1800 children in the district living in poverty. The national median income is $28,500 with Ashburton’s median $32,900. The relative poverty line is considered to be an income that is below 60 per cent of the median - $17,100 national, $19,200 Ashburton District. While poverty figures are not available for the Ashburton District, Census income figures show there are 3130 people between the ages of 20 and 54, probable child rearing years, who earn less than $20,000 a year. The Child Poverty Monitor indicates that poverty rates were higher in households where there were three or more children. There are 4554 families in the Ashburton District with about 40 per cent of those having three or more children. The poverty report found that about 30 per cent of Maori and 30 per cent of Pacific children lived in poor households compared to 15 per cent of European children. As a group children experiencing material hardship were exposed to economising behaviours such as cutting back on fresh fruit, vegetables and meat, not replacing worn out clothes, not having at least two pair of shoes in good repair, having to put up with feeling cold and postponing doctor’s visits because of cost.
The driver of a 4WD towing a house bus that collided with a milk tanker was flown to Christchurch Hospital with a fractured arm on Friday. It was unknown what the condition was of the man at the time, but yesterday Westpac Rescue Helicopter spokesman said the driver had a fractured humerus and was likely to be out of hospital by now.

Poverty findings ‘no surprise’ By Toni Williams
Toni.w@theguardian.co.nz
Regional Manager of Presbyterian Support Ashburton Jackie Girvan is not surprised by the findings of the recently released Child Poverty Monitor. It shows that one in four children is now affected by poverty and that now includes two income families struggling with escalating costs, she said. “Society is just so different to what it was then and there are more single parent families on one wage or benefit.” Once the main bills of rent and power were paid there was limited left over for other utilities and one of the first corners to be cut was food. Vehicle warrants of fitness and registrations were also left unpaid, which if caught and fined only added to the problem, Mrs Girvan said. Most people were in trouble for a short period of time, such as waiting for pay-day or had a large bill due, but a number left problems to the last moment when the situation was dire. Mrs Girvan said it was im-

With a limited income it can be very, very hard to manage
portant people got help before they reached crisis point, she said. “With a limited income it can be very, very hard to manage. People need to get budgeting advice sooner rather than later.” Hampstead School principal Peter Melrose said there were one or two families for whatever reason that found it difficult to pay for food, rent and power and find their way out of debt. “Working their way out of debt is just too big,” he said. Mr Melrose said a school decile rating had little to do with poverty. It was spread around town. “If we are talking about poverty, decile rating doesn’t actually reflect poverty. There are

pockets of poverty in every school in Ashburton.” The Government’s idea to get people into work was well and good, but with a small income and the price of rentals in town it was hard to spread a limited supply of money around, he said. Schools generally picked up on issues with money and one of the first signals could be someone without morning tea or lunch. “It doesn’t happen often and can be a temporary (thing).” A school would ensure the child had food and that the family knew which agencies to get help from, he said. “We try to give them a pathway out of this, rather than spiral down.”
Otago home invasion accused remanded Two South Otago men charged over a home invasion at Kaka Point last Sunday have been remanded in custody for a week. Neither man - a 33-year-old driver and a 19-year-old farm hand - made an anticipated appearance in the Dunedin District Court yesterday afternoon.
Driver out of hospital
Instead, both had their cases adjourned by a registrar. Both were granted interim name suppression and remanded in custody by consent to appear in court next Tuesday. The men are charged with unlawfully entering a house in the Esplanade, Kaka Point, on
December 8 and intentionally causing grievous bodily harm to a woman. Earlier yesterday, police named the victim as Pam Paterson, 65, owner-operator of the Point Cafe and Bar, who remains in Dunedin Hospital in a stable condition.
Police thanked the public for their assistance but wanted to hear from anyone who had information about the assault, at Mrs Paterson’s Esplanade home about 6pm on Sunday. Anyone with information was asked to contact Balclutha police on 418 0203. - APNZ
The Ashburton Cadet Unit will be presented with two major shooting trophies at their final parade this week. The Gunson Cup Shooting Trophy and the Canterbury Defence Cadets Victory Trophy were earned against other units in New Zealand. The Gunson Cup is a national award against all other Cadet Corp units but the Victory Trophy is for the best South Island unit of all three ground corps cadets, Air Training Cadets and the Sea Cadets. New Zealand Cadet Corp major Cezarne Rodgers said the cadets were shooting MarlinXT .22 rifles to compete. Mayor Angus McKay will be there and for 12 cadets it will be their first time experiencing a formal parade. The parade ceremony on Sunday, at 254 Cameron Street, starts at 3pm.
Propeller recovered The propeller missing from the Cook Strait ferry Aratere has been recovered. A remotecontrolled underwater vehicle pulled the propeller to the surface yesterday, KiwiRail confirmed. “The propeller was retrieved from a depth of around 120 metres and approximately two nautical miles from Tory Channel using strops that were fitted around the blades of the propeller and part of the shaft ...” a statement from KiwiRail said. The 6-tonne propeller was then secured to the stern of the salvage vessel Brandywine and taken to Picton before being loaded onto the deck of the vessel by a crane,” said Interislander General Manager Thomas Davis. - APNZ

■ ASHBURTON MAN REMANDED
Remanded in custody pending trial An Ashburton farm worker has been remanded in custody pending trial on serious charges. Gordon Green denied charges of aggravated robbery and driving while disqualified, and offered no plea to charges of possessing methamphetamine, and three of receiving stolen property. Green has been detained in custody since his arrest, and lodged a bail application
through his lawyer. However, while police prosecutor Greg Sutherland agreed the Christchurch address proposed for electronically monitored bail was suitable, he was not convinced the accused would steer clear of criminal activities. His lawyer pointed out while Green had an extensive history with the court, he had generally complied with bail conditions, and had made a good effort to
turn his life around over the past year. Although Green has yet to plead to the receiving and possession of class A drugs charges, he denied any involvement, saying the items were discovered at a friend’s address, which he was visiting at the time. Judge Chris Somerville suppressed evidence relating to Green’s arrest on the basis it could prejudice a trial.
Green also had job offers, both in Ashburton and Christchurch, and Housing New Zealand had held his accommodation pending Monday’s court hearing. The fact that jury trials in the Timaru High Court will be suspended for three months next year, while the court deals with the South Canterbury Finance trial, was also raised as a reason to offer bail. If Green’s case goes to the
High Court it is unlikely to be heard until late next year. “My concern is whether you will come back to court – these are serious charges, it is a sound case with eye witnesses,” Judge Somerville said. “I’ve decided to remand you in custody.” Green will reappear to address the charges he has yet to plead to on January 6, and the other matters on March 3.

Retiring after three decades of helping others BY TONI WILLIAMS

Salvation Army captain John Stone is retiring from service after more than three decades helping others. He will be joined in retirement by wife Salvation Army major Maree Stone, who herself has dedicated 17 years of service. A retirement service for them will be held at the Ashburton Corps morning meeting on Sunday. Captain Stone answered a calling and joined the Sallies in 1981 and a year later started as a work skills manager on the West Coast. Over the years the family has moved around the country. They have lived in Napier, Temuka, Alexandra, Christchurch, Oamaru, but Ashburton is where they now call home. “I liked working here … I like getting involved with people,” said Mr Stone. “It’s a good town. I love the town actually. All the big shops

are here with parking out the door. Where else can you do that.” While Mr Stone has dreams of fishing and recreational sport, he said his wife had a list of jobs already lined up for him. She joked it should take him five years to complete. The couple have brought a house and plan to stay in Ashburton. Mr Stone plans to get involved in some aspect of volunteer work but first they would have a holiday and spend time with family, including their 10 grandchildren.

■ RURAL REAL ESTATE
In brief
Local farm listings scarce Despite Mid Canterbury dairy property prices marching up, listings are scarce, says a local rural real estate leader. PGG Wrightson Real Estate’s Mid Canterbury sales manager Robin Ford says the value of the region’s dairy farms reached new heights in the recently completed spring selling season. “While the rising milk pay-out is driving sales activity, a tight supply of listings has elevated values. “Farms have changed hands for between $50,000 and $54,000 per hectare, unshared, an increase of $5000 per hectare in the past 12 months. Dairy grazing farms, with spray irrigation, are currently trading between $40,000 and $45,000 per hectare, while foothills properties with 1000 millimetres per annum rainfall, are fetching between $25,000 and $30,000 per hectare,” he said. As a consequence of this unsatisfied demand, dairying also prevails as the major influence on the market for Mid Canterbury arable farms. “With few crops promising sub-
stantial returns this season, any property with cropping soils is in demand for dairy. Values for sprayirrigated properties with cropping soils presently sit between $40,000 and $45,000 per hectare, while dryland cropping farms are between $29,000 and $38,000,” he said. However, Mr Ford says a cropping farm’s capacity for conversion to dairy may not always be such a major consideration when it sells. “While this trend seems set in stone, and dairy’s ascendency is likely to continue for the foreseeable future, dairy conversion may not automatically be the best option for every arable farm that is offered to the market, and each property needs to be considered on its merits. “With consent from Environment Canterbury required for nitrate leaching, which can be high and difficult to gauge on arable inputs, some farms may be easier to consent in dairy use, rather than as arable farms, and therefore worth more converted. However, each farm is likely to be different in this respect,” he said.

The Maori Party is seeking talks with retired boxer David Tua to discuss the possibility of his standing for the party at the next election. But it had better get a hurry on. While Tua told the Herald he was more than happy to have talks with the Maori Party, he was also happy to sit down with Mana and the Conservatives. “I’ll sit down with anyone. Anyone and everyone ... I’m not going to close the door on anyone.” A Mana Party worker had already made a preliminary approach but the Conservative Party had not. - APNZ

Three members of New Zealand’s delegation will not be able to attend Nelson Mandela’s funeral last night, after the South African Government imposed a strict two-person limit. Heads of state have been told they are allowed to take one additional person to the official memorial service in Johannesburg. Prime Minister John Key has decided to take Leader of the Opposition David Cunliffe to the funeral, his office confirmed. One night sleeping in a tent in a public park was enough to land several housing offers for homeless mother of three Nellie Hunt. Ms Hunt and her children aged 16, 11 and 9 moved into a tent in Christchurch’s Waltham Park on Monday after being evicted from their rental property. In spite of being on Housing New Zealand’s “urgent” list since her landlord served 90 days’ notice in September, Ms Hunt said she had been unable to find suitable accommodation. She wanted to stay in the Waltham area because her children were at school and it was handy to where she worked as a bakery assistant. Yesterday the city council offered her a four-bedroom house in Gloucester Street and Waltham landlord John Beattie visited the park to offer the family a three-bedroom house close to her former rental property. A city council spokeswoman said Ms Hunt applied for a council-owned social housing unit and was assessed as having a “high housing need”. She was shown a unit in Gloucester Street at social housing rates of $260 a week. Ms Hunt said she preferred Mr Beattie’s property because “it’s just down the road from where I was living”. The council property in Gloucester Street was “a beautiful house, but just a little far away”. Ms Hunt was grateful for the huge support she has received since her plight was aired in the media, including offers of food, money and even camping gear to help make her temporary accommodation more comfortable. - APNZ
Police have released detailed data on Taser use since 2009 showing officers are using the weapon more often, but also resolving more incidents without discharging the probes. The data also showed serious injuries from Tasers had been rare, and were caused by people falling after having been Tasered. Since March 2010, when the device was rolled out to all police districts, Tasers have been shown 2646 times, with 13 per cent of those cases involving a discharge. On average since 2010, officers drew Tasers 59 times a month, and discharged it nine times. In 2013, the average has risen to 92 times per month, with an average of 12 discharges. - APNZ
Shark casts shadow A spooky shape in the ocean at Ruakaka Beach is almost certainly a bronze whaler, says a shark expert. Aryan McKay captured the photo after she got her family out of the water on December 2. Department of Conservation marine scientist and shark expert Clinton Duffy said the shark was “99 per cent” a bronze whaler and people needed to realise that they were the most common shark around and were often in the water at the same time as swimmers. - APNZ
Court martial possible An army officer who served in Afghanistan could face a court martial over the booby-trapping of a cache of explosive components which allegedly put others in danger. The officer, whose name and rank are suppressed, appeared for a summary trial before disciplinary officer Brigadier Tim Gall at Trentham yesterday. Brigadier Gall found there was a prima facie case to answer and referred the matter to the Director of Military Prosecutions. That means the matter could be heard by a court martial. Heavy suppressions are in place around the case. - APNZ

Inquiry upgraded to homicide A man arrested during a search for missing Wanganui man Whetu Teaola Hansen is behind bars but police are yet to arrest anyone for his killing. Mr Hansen, 48, has been missing since November 24 and armed police have been searching a Linton property for several days. Manawatu police announced yesterday the inquiry had been upgraded to a murder investigation, but say they are yet arrest anyone in connection with Mr Hansen’s death. The arrested man appeared in Palmerston North District Court yesterday where a JP imposed sweeping suppression orders relating to name, age, address and the charges he faces. He was remanded in custody until December 17. Earlier yesterday, Detective Senior Sergeant Simon Harrison announced explosives had been found at the property and the case had been upgraded to a murder inquiry. “Based on information that we have received in the past 12 hours we have upgraded this inquiry to a homicide investigation. While I am not prepared to divulge the nature of the information for investigative reasons, this is a significant turning point for our investigation and this information has further confirmed our serious concerns around Mr Hansen’s disappearance.” Police say Mr Hansen was seen driving a grey primercoloured 1980 Ford ute, registration JM9538, on the day he went missing. The vehicle was located at a property in Linton last Thursday. Armed guards have been posted outside the house where officers have been carrying out a scene examination for some days. - APNZ

The group operates on three tiers - service to the community, service to the corps, and combat training. Mr Brown is second in command at the Marine Confedera-
cy of Rakaia, and works at City Care in Christchurch. Mrs Maw was recently appointed as national vice-president of Rural Women New Zealand. She and husband Geoff farm a sheep and crop farm at Dorie and she has five children aged nine to 15. Mr Pluck said it was great to see extra members on the committee representing a wide range of interests in the community.
“I’m thrilled they agreed to become part of the committee,” he said. He was also pleased longtime member Elma Hobson, who was in her 80s, agreed to continue as chairperson of the beautification sub committee. Mrs Hobson was the “driving force” behind the town’s recent mural and a number of garden projects, so the reason the town looked as good as it did in many areas.

Among them is a special tree on which messages of remembrance can be tied for friends and family members who have died. allowed home for Christmas An Allenton man remanded in custody last month will be allowed home for Christmas. Victor Earl Reihana, 27, was sent to jail to await sentencing on charges of injuring with intent, by Judge Joanna Maze. At the time Judge Maze said the likelihood of Reihana receiving home detention was highly unlikely because of the injuries inflicted, and rejected his counsel’s request for electronically monitored bail. The charge arose from events in August, when Reihana and a group of friends had gathered to watch a rugby game. Around midnight the complainant and Reihana were alone in a double garage, when an argument escalated into a serious assault. As a result the complainant was admitted to hospital with a broken jaw, broken teeth and multiple cuts and bruises. During a previous appearance, Reihana claimed that the complainant had initiated the altercation and for a large part of it he was defending himself. He admitted “losing it” toward the end of the altercation, but with no evidence to support this Judge Maze could not take it into account. When he appeared for sentencing this week, his lawyer handed Judge Chris Somerville two affidavits supporting his self-defence claims. However police prosecutor Greg Sutherland had not been able to access the information electronically, and therefore had not read it. “I’m not willing to deal with it today – and I’m not willing to send this man back to prison because the prosecutor has not read the attachment,” Judge Somerville said. Reihana’s lawyer pointed to the evidence supplied by an independent witness, but Judge Somerville said the complainant was entitled to have his say, rather than read he had been blamed in the paper. “To be fair to everybody I think the judge needs to hear from both of you,” he said. “It was a serious assault, but I’m not having you in jail for Christmas.” Reihana was remanded on bail to appear at a disputed facts hearing on January 28.

In brief Republic of Australia? A new poll suggests nearly half of Australians agree with Governor-General Quentin Bryce that Australia should become a republic. In a controversial Boyer Lecture last month, Ms Bryce said she hoped the nation would evolve into a country where “one day, one young girl or boy may even grow up to be our nation’s first head of state”. And on the back of the comments, the Australian Republican Movement conducted a poll, with 48 per cent of respondents agreeing with her stance. - AAP

■ SOUTH AFRICA
Sorrow and pride BY JOHANNES MYBURGH “Welcome. You are all welcome!” blared the loudspeaker as the train door opened, disgorging hundreds of mourners onto the platfom. “Viva Tata Madiba, Viva!” the new arrivals shouted back, as they began chanting and singing in a spontaneous celebration of grief and pride. From the station they walked, jogged and sang their way in light rain towards the Soweto stadium to join in a mass remembrance for Tata (Father) Nelson Mandela, their saviour president whose courage and
fortitude broke the back of the hated apartheid system. They began gathering before daybreak, desperate to secure one of the precious first-comer tickets that would allow them to join nearly 100 heads of state and government in paying tribute to Mandela’s life and legacy. Despite the profound sense of national sorrow triggered by Mandela’s death last Thursday, the mood was upbeat, with people determined to celebrate the memory of one of the 20th century’s towering political figures. “This is once in your life. This is history,” said Noma Kova, 36.

Only 80,000 were to be allowed inside the stadium, with others forced to watch at home or on giant screens set up in three “overflow” stadiums in Johannesburg with a combined capacity of 120,000. Security was tight around the venue, with military helicopters flying overhead, and newlyrecruited marshals in bright jackets helping police keep the crowds moving. Many were wrapped in the South African flag or yellowgreen coloured shawls printed with the slogan “Mandela For-

A central stage where, later in the day, speakers including the US and Cuban presidents were to address millions watching around the world, appeared to be protected by a glass shield. “When you say Mandela, you are talking South Africa,” said Julenda Ntlekoana, a nurse who met Mandela when he visited her Johannesburg hospital after he retired from office. - AFP
■ CHINA
China ‘confident, belligerent’ People around the world see China as “confident”, “belligerent” and “arrogant”, staterun media says, in an unusually direct survey of attitudes towards the country. Only 13 per cent of respondents in the poll by the Global Times newspaper described China as “peaceful”, a sign that Beijing’s territorial spats with its Asian neighbours have taken a toll on its image. It also concluded that “the closer you are to China, the more likely you are to have a negative view of it”. The Global Times tends to take a nationalistic stance and is close to China’s ruling Communist Party. With the exception of rivals such as the US or Japan, state-run media coverage of
relations with other countries normally concentrates on the positive, and it is rare for criticism of China to be reported. But in the survey of 14,400 people in 14 countries, 30.3 per cent of respondents called China “confident” in international affairs, with 29.4 per cent describing it as “belligerent”, while “complicated” was chosen by 28.1 per cent. “People also describe China with words such as ‘tough’, ‘arrogant’ and ‘co-operative’,” the paper added, with each of them chosen by about 25 per cent of respondents. The survey was conducted last month in countries including the United States, Russia, Japan, India, Vietnam, South Korea, South Africa, Britain, the Philippines and Brazil. - AFP
The federal government has demanded Holden immediately reveal if it will keep making cars in Australia, after again playing down the prospect of a hand out for the US-owned group. But he also signalled the company was looking for long term support and could only keep going under a publicprivate partnership. - AAP
War could kill 2 billion A nuclear war between India and Pakistan would set off a global famine that could kill two billion people and effectively end human civilisation, a study says. Even if limited in scope, a conflict with nuclear weapons would wreak havoc in the atmosphere and devastate crop yields, with the effects multiplied as global food markets went into turmoil, the report said yesterday. The Nobel Peace Prize-winning International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War and Physicians for Social Responsibility released an initial study in April 2012 that predicted a nuclear famine could kill more than a billion people. - AFP
Spies going on-line Freshly leaked documents by former US intelligence contractor Edward Snowden have revealed spies disguised as fantasy characters prowled online games hunting terrorists. Elves, orcs or other fictional characters happened upon by players in the popular realm of World of Warcraft may have been US and British spies, according to documents released through ProPublica, the Guardian, and the New York Times. There were also indications that intelligence agents went undercover in online multi-player shooter games, particularly on Microsoft’s Xbox Live internet community for players. - AFP

OUR VIEW
Poverty a reality Coen Lammers EDITOR
I
t is hard not to feel a sense of shame this week after the devastating facts in the Child Poverty Monitor report by Children’s Commissioner Russell Wills. The cold hard facts on our most vulnerable citizens makes tough reading. According to the report, one in four children in New Zealand lives under the poverty line, which in turn equates to one in six children going to school without shoes. They are also highly likely leave home without any food in their tummy or in their lunch box. Families living in poverty are those who earn less than 60 per cent of the median New Zealand income, which is a meagre $28,500. Even though it is hard to get specific figures from Ashburton, the national average indicates that close to 2000 children in Mid Canterbury could be falling into that category. The fact that little Kiwis are not getting fed, or properly clothed or are too poor to see a doctor when they are sick, is an absolute disgrace to all of us. We hear many sad stories about groups and individuals living on struggle street, but in most cases we can ignore our social responsibility and blame the families. Indeed, many children live in poverty because their parents have made bad choices, but often those parents also grew up in environments where they were bound to fail. The Government already has several programmes to combat the poverty issue by tackling part of the problem like housing, health nutrition and income. But it is not enough. The problem is so wide and deep-seated that New Zealand needs a countrywide, cross-party, long-term approach to deal with this national disgrace. There is no silver bullet to break the cycle but all Kiwi children deserve the basic needs to get a fair start in life and a genuine chance to flourish. This used to be the Kiwi way, but somewhere along the line this country lost its way and left behind the weakest section of its society. It’s an overwhelming challenge, but we have to start somewhere.

Mr Anderson’s opinion is especially of value in that it is backed by an extensive knowledge and experience in honest procedures essential to good governance. Those so vigorously promoting this in the face of such well presented opposition operate within a set of values, if that be a description, that is foreign to most of us. This does not auger well for the rest of their term and although it is said the “truth will out”, in three years they can prove to be a costly mistake. M. N. Richards

Thank you St Paul’s Church, Ashburton, wish to thank everyone who contributed to make our recent Christmas Extravaganza an overwhelming success. We had a pipedream of raising $10,000 and we are delighted to confirm that our target was reached. We have to thank the people who generously opened their homes and gardens for viewing; businesses and private individuals for sponsorship and assistance, including ticket outlets; the people who decorated the church and hall; the stallholders and those who supplied
goods or services for our Lucky Number cakes and hamper. We have to thank the musicians who entertained throughout the weekend. Our gratitude goes to the hundreds who manned the homes, gardens, church and hall in shifts, including overnight security. The media must be mentioned for their advice and help with advertising, so we could reach as many people as possible. This was done in a very professional way. We thank all who purchased tickets in Mid Canterbury and further afield. We hope you all enjoyed yourselves as much as we enjoyed presenting the event to you. What started out as a local event, ended up a community affair which turned out to be a time of relaxation and fun. Many thanks to you all from the St Paul’s Church Family. May God’s blessing go with you this Christmas season. Jennifer Marks, St Paul’s Church

FROM YOUR COUNCIL
I
n November I was at a local government conference in Wellington where the Hon. Chris Tremain, the Minister of Local Government spoke about what he thought Better Local Government actually looked like in New Zealand. The minister summarised what he and the Government were looking for under five headings. Consistency of purpose This is being very clear about the things taxpayers or the Government pays for, and what things ratepayers or local councils pay for. The minister thought there should be minimal cross over. Easier said than done. The Government has tried to tackle the separation of roles before, but has struggled to get traction. From our inseparable partnership in maintaining the country’s roading network, through to ratepayers giving councils the mandate to top up Government services in areas like health and housing for the elderly, there are many instances where the lines between Government and council are blurred. Transparency and a culture of constant improvement We can’t argue with this. But it is hard to think of a sector that has more legislative provisions governing its transparency and accountability than local government. There is a significant compliance cost that ratepayers get landed with for this, and the outcomes aren’t always quite what people were looking for. The call for straight forward financial reporting verses the statutory requirement to comply with international financial reporting standards is a classic case. The cost of producing an annual report every year and having it audited is significant. $103,000 for ours, but then you also have to add on the cost of preparing and auditing our Council Controlled Organisa-

tion’s accounts. Audit fees for Ashburton Contracting Limited’s latest annual report were another $41,000. Because of the legislative requirements many readers say that annual reports have become harder to understand. We do want to ‘raise the bar’ and get better at providing our services. Over and above our ‘business as usual’ delivery each year there should always be projects on the go that aim to improve our efficiency and effectiveness. Long term planning and financial prudence Nothing new here. Councils have undertaken a tonne of planning and financial work over the last 20 odd years. In 1989 we had major legislative reforms focusing on structural reorganisation, accountability, annual planning, separation of functions, and Local Authority Trading Enterprises. In 1996 there were financial management, long term financial strategy, intergenerational equity, and corporate borrowing reforms. 2002 saw the introduction of long term council community plans. We

had the TAFM reforms in 2010 – Transparency, Accountability and Financial Management, bringing into existence financial strategies and readying us for financial bench marking. In 2012 Better Local Government reforms brought new fiscal responsibility requirements, and now in 2013 we have a Bill before Parliament requiring 30 year infrastructure strategies. A paradigm shift to digital services New Zealanders have an insatiable demand to move things online. The Government’s target is to have an average of 70 per cent of the most common transactions with the public sector (including councils) online by 2017. Ashburton District Council has made some notable information technology advances recently, introducing a new easier to use website, achieving much faster building consent processing times through fully computerised work flow systems, and introducing online payments for some services. There is much more to come. Community led local
government reorganisation The large Auckland City amalgamation was forced. Nelson tried to join with Marlborough recently, but the level of voter support wasn’t there. Government’s current policy is that future local government reform should come from the ground up rather than the other way around. Recent legislative changes are designed to assist such reform. The Wellington region, the Far North and Hawke’s Bay are all entertaining amalgamations in one form or another at the moment. In Canterbury, watch out for the Government beginning its review of Environment Canterbury next year around March. The terms of reference for the review, when announced, will signal if this is about a continuation of the regional council with a return to democratic representation, or if some wider structural reform could be considered in Christchurch City or for the wider Canterbury region. hen it comes to entertaining, Christmas is on its own when it comes to trying to cram in too much into too little time. It’s the time of year when most of us realise we haven’t caught up with friends and family as much as we should have during the year and in an effort to right that wrong before the year runs out, we opt for festive season entertaining. And that’s great, but it does add to the pressure that’s already around as the year winds down. To make life a little easier it’s good to have the makings of a few quick nibbles on hand for invited – or unexpected guests.

■ LAMB PRICES FORCED UP
Christmas roast ‘will cost more’ By Brendan Manning A drop in lamb numbers due to the worst drought in 70 years may result in higher prices for this year’s Christmas roast. A total of 25.5 million lambs were tailed this spring - 1.3m fewer than in 2012 - making the current lamb crop the second smallest in nearly 60 years, Beef and Lamb New Zealand said in its latest lamb crop survey. Only 2010-11 was lower, they said. However the lamb crop figure was higher than many had expected, said Beef and Lamb economic service chief economist Andrew Burtt. The spring 2013 lamb crop was estimated to be down 7.7 per cent, or 2.1 million lambs, reflecting the severity of the widespread drought in last summer and autumn. While the South Island conditions were drier than in recent
years, the impact on the lamb crop was estimated to be less than in the North Island, Beef and Lamb said. Lamb export prices were expected to average $98 for an 18.4kg lamb this season, up 16 per cent on the provisional 201213 price of $84.60 per head. Federated Farmers’ president Bruce Wills said the law of economics would kick in and the cost of lamb would rise this year. “We did have obviously a historic drought event earlier 2013 - it was the worst drought in 70 years. People had to process stock that they wouldn’t otherwise.” It was hard to estimate the price impact of the lamb shortage for New Zealand consumers, as 95 per cent of our lamb was exported, Mr Wills said. However, “there’s no question, if you’re a consumer, you’re going to be paying more for lamb this year than last”. Compiled by

between now and Christmas. “It might be five cents, if that. “It won’t ever just shoot up. It always increases over winter and then starts dropping back down, but that happens every year.” he said. - APNZ

By daniel lynch A booming New Zealand property market is driving a surge in real estate jobs and applications for licensed accreditation, latest figures show. More than 1500 positions have been advertised this year so
far - an increase of more than 29 per cent on last year’s total, according to job listing site Seek. Increased market activity and property sales volumes in 2013 were once again driving people to consider real estate careers, said managing director of Bayley’s Real Estate Mike Bayley.
“We are tracking strong demand and job growth out of the Auckland and Christchurch real estate markets in both the residential, commercial and industrial sectors, and are now also seeing increasing signs of positivity in provincial cities,” said Bayley. - HOL

ASB Classic wildcards Next year’s ASB Classic will include Germany’s Julia Goerges and the Czech Republic’s Andrea Hlavackova who both received wild cards for the main draw yesterday. This year marked Goerges’ fifth straight season in the world’s top 100, as she reached the fourth round of the Australian Open and the third rounds of the Indian Wells and Charleston tournaments. Hlavackova arrives off the back of an impressive doubles season, winning the US Open in both the mixed and women’s events. The wildcards join a strong ASB Classic line-up including seventime Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams, former world No 1 and Grand Slam champion Ana Ivanovic, New Zealand No 1 Marina Erakovic. - APNZ
Hunt out for months Kiwi UFC heavyweight Mark Hunt has no problems with meeting Antonio ‘Bigfoot’ Silva again, it just won’t happen until well in to next year. After the pair fought to a thrilling majority draw at UFC Fight Night 33 in Brisbane on Saturday, people immediately questioned whether there would be a rematch. Both fighters were taken to hospital after the fiveround war and weren’t available to the media but Hunt confirmed yesterday in a phone interview with ‘The MMA Hour’ that he would need a lengthy stint out of the octagon due to a badly broken left hand. “The doctor said at least six months before I can start hitting anything,” Hunt said. “I’ve got like 12 screws in my hand.” - APNZ
No Messi for Barcelona Barcelona welcome Celtic to the Camp Nou tonight still needing a point to guarantee they finish top of Group H in soccer’s Champions League. The Catalans appeared to be cruising to first place and a home second leg of their last16 tie after beating AC Milan 3-1 to qualify on matchday four. However, a 2-1 defeat away to Ajax was followed by another loss, as Athletic Bilbao ended Barca’s 26-game unbeaten run. Barca will again be without the injured Lionel Messi, Victor Valdes and Dani Alves, but Jordi Alba - who scored an injury-time winner when the two sides met at the Camp Nou last season - returned against Cartagena after three months out and is expected to start. - AFP
No injury for Inglis Greg Inglis is set to begin training with South Sydney in the New Year, as scheduled, after the superstar was cleared of a serious thumb injury. Rabbitohs fans feared the worst after Inglis was replaced late in Australia’s emphatic World Cup win over New Zealand in Manchester two weeks ago, and was later seen leaving Old Trafford with his arm in a sling. But Rabbitohs high-performance manager Troy Thomson said yesterday the injury is not as bad as initially thought. “A bit of a scare there for Rabbitohs fans and us staff ... Greggy got a bit of a whack on his thumb but the Australian medical staff were really good,” he said. “He saw us at the start of the week to get the all clear and everything looks good.” - AAP

Championship show huge success Mid Canterbury riders were in the money at the fourth annual South Island Premier Championship Show, held in Ashburton for the first time over the weekend. The change of venue paid off with increased entries across all sections, at the biggest show for led and ridden horses and
ponies in the South Island. The Ashburton showgrounds were in superb conditions for the three day event. Six judges, including three international judges, had their work cut out selecting champions from the south’s top hacks and ponies. Local riders to take championships were Emily Chamberlain

Ko jumped from sixth to fourth in the rankings, leapfrogging Korean So Yeon Ryu. Ko won the event at the Linkou Miramar Golf Club in Taipei after surging past Ryu on the final nine holes to win by three shots. Ko took away $US150,000 ($NZ181,000) for the victory, along with $US8,000 she won
in the tournament’s skins event last week. Korean Inbee Park will finish the year as world No 1 with Norway’s Suzann Pettersen in second spot. American Stacy Lewis is world No 3. The 16-year-old will begin her 2014 campaign at the Bahamas Classic from January 23 - 26, where she must attend a mandatory rookie’s session, before she will return home to defend her title at the ISPS Handa New Zealand Women’s Open in Christchurch from January 31 February 2. - HOL

NZ alert to Windies’ revival By DaviD Leggat New Zealand will be wary of a resurgent West Indies side going into the second test at the Basin Reserve today. They will know they let slip a wonderful opportunity to get their noses in front in the threetest rubber at Dunedin, that the West Indies have taken considerable heart after their staunch effort over those last two days. Certainly their captain, Darren Sammy, was upbeat yesterday, hinting broadly that they’ll take the same XI into the test. He cited the example of young seamer Shannon Gabriel, who had a poor match in Dunedin. The team culture was one of support, he said, so while Gabriel “looked a bit rusty, the chances are we will back him again to give him some confidence”. You sense the West Indies would really like to play their two quality spinners, Shane Shillingford and Sunil Narine, recognising that New Zealand batsmen collectively have their issues against good spin bowling. One look at the Basin Reserve pitch put that notion to rest, however. Sammy pointed at the green carpet of the indoor centre yesterday, comparing it to the pitch. “I don’t think any of our guys will have played on a surface so green before.” New Zealand have put off confirming their team until this

morning, the contentious point being the makeup of the three seamers. Captain Brendon McCullum all but confirmed legspinner Ish Sodhi will play. Corey Anderson’s left armers will give support, but on the frontline seamers he raised the old, and reasonable, argument that “if three can’t get it done then whether four will”. So it’ll be Neil Wagner retaining his place or Doug Bracewell coming in. Tim Southee and Trent Boult are certainties. All three from Dunedin have been nursed through the past three days after a heavy workload. “They’ve been looked after pretty well, they didn’t train yesterday and got to bat in the nets first today. The coaching staff are taking care of them,” McCullum said. Kane Williamson will return for Aaron Redmond at No3, having recovered from his fractured thumb, and he will add his useful offspin to the bowling mix. However Tino Best, the liveliest of the West Indian fast bowlers, will fancy testing out Williamson’s thumb. There is one point about the pitch worth remembering sometimes they don’t behave as your eyes tell you they should. McCullum talked of guarding against bowlers getting excited and losing sight of their strategies. “Sometimes you can start searching a bit and see the ball Logan. Quade ‘shouldn’t box’ Quade Cooper might want to make the most of his latest bout in January, after ARU boss Bill Pulver made it clear he doesn’t like the idea of the Wallabies’ vice-captain combining rugby and boxing. Cooper is slated to fight on Anthony Mundine’s undercard on January 29 in Brisbane, but continuing his career in the ring could prove difficult, with the star five-eighth to negotiate a new deal with the ARU later next year. Pulver said he couldn’t be more impressed with Cooper’s career turnaround in 2013, but indicated boxing could be off the table in future contract talks. The ARU chief is against one of his most valuable commodities risking injury in another sport. - AAP

fizzing through. While you’re beating the bat you’re not threatening the stumps. We’ll be making sure we’ve still got the stumps in play.” If it’s not one pressure point it’s another for McCullum. His impressive century in Dunedin sorted out the heat on his batting, but he bristled gently when the run of 10 winless tests was put to him yesterday. It was more a glance to fine leg than a thunderous hook, but McCullum is clearly wearying
at the year-long drought. “I think you’re under pressure every time you play for New Zealand. “I guess now you can look for something else to put the pressure on. We’re playing good cricket, wins will come at some point. It’d be nice if we had more support rather than this scrutiny but that’s how it is at times.” McCullum knows there’s only one way to get that monkey off his, and the team’s, back. - NZH

Rival captains Brendon McCullum and Darren Sammy are taking a positive view of a new piece of technology to be used in the next two tests. Real Time Snicko will be the latest tool in the third umpire’s tool kit. The merging of picture and sound will take about 20 seconds and can be used to help identify edges, either for catches behind the wicket or lbws, upon a referral request from either side. The system is being used in the Ashes series and it was quietly trialled at Dunedin during the first test. - NZH
Bears maul Cowboys Josh McCown threw for 349 yards and Matt Forte gained 175 yards and a touchdown to lead the Chicago Bears to a 45-28 NFL win over Dallas yesterday. McCown, making his fourth consecutive start in place of Jay Cutler, threw four touchdown passes and ran for another in frigid conditions at Soldier Field in Chicago. McCown was 27-for-36 for 348 yards, while Forte carried the ball 20 times for 102 yards and added seven catches for 73 yards and a score. The Bears improved to 7-6 and snapped a two-game losing streak. - AFP
England ‘not scared’ England claim they’re not scared of Australian pace ace Mitchell Johnson. But they might end up shaking in their boots if an expected adrenaline hit can push Johnson to even faster speeds during the third Test at the WACA, starting Friday. Johnson destroyed England’s batting lineup in Brisbane and Adelaide, with 140-150km/h thunderbolts leaving several opponents clearly rattled. The task is set to get even harder for England at the pace-friendly WACA, where Johnson has thrived in the past. Three years ago, Johnson snared figures of 6-38 and 3-44 to inspire Australia to a 267-run win in Perth. - AAP

In brief Board member moving New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing board member Des Friedrich has resigned his role to take up a position in Australia. He has been appointed as chief executive officer of the Alice Springs Turf Club in the Northern Territory of Australia. Friedrich, who was appointed to the NZTR board at the beginning of 2012, said he was disappointed to be leaving. “I am very sorry to be leaving NZTR while we are making such worthwhile progress, but this is a huge personal and professional opportunity; too good to miss.” Friedrich takes up his new position toward the end of January, 2014.

Kirramosa returns Star spring filly Kirramosa has come back to the Randwick stable of trainer and part-owner John Sargent. The three-year-old won the Gr.1 VRC Oaks after success in the Gr.2 Wakeful Stakes and was given a month off following her memorable double. Kirramosa, who has been the subject of a number of offers, has been set for the Gr.1 AJC Oaks in the autumn.
Cummings’ stay put The dispute between Bart Cummings and his grandson James has been settled and the training partnership is to continue. Cummings’ long-time friend and adviser Jack Fisher said the master trainer was surprised at the publicity over what was essentially a family matter that had been easily resolved. The 86-yearold Cummings entered into the partnership at the beginning of August with his grandson, who said they were a united team and it was business as usual. - APNZ
Administrators move in BC3 Thoroughbreds chairman Bill Vlahos has resigned and administrators have now taken over the business. Insolvency experts Michael Hird and Trent Hancock of Moore Stephens were appointed administrators on Monday afternoon. The news comes after revelations of a punter’s club associated with Vlahos may have as much as $A500 million from some 1000 members with no records of any bets being laid. It has also been confirmed that Vlahos was attacked on Sunday night at a property where a car was also burned out. - APNZ
Classcoroc top chance Classcoroc has been a source of frustration in recent times for trainer and part-owner Graeme Hughes and he’s hopeful a return to Ellerslie today will bring out the best in the mare. The five-yearold has picked up four cheques from five previous appearances on the course and as a past open handicap winner she is wellplaced in the Rating 75 Barfoot & Thompson Twilight Cup. “We thought she was all set last time out (at Pukekohe Park) and she was a bit disappointing, but she didn’t like the track and it was a hot day,” Hughes said. “She pulled up as soon as they crossed the line – she shut down really quickly, but she’s been working well since and doing everything right.” - APNZ
Showing the style that could see them become champions of the future, Mark Jones and Itz Bettor to Win (inside) slip home half a head in front of Mark Smolenski and Jay Dub in the first in a series of qualifying trials for two-year-olds at yesterday’s Ashburton Trotting Club trials. The future of racing is in good hands if the performance of a number of two-year-olds at yesterday’s Ashburton trials is any indication. A strong line-up of trotters and pacers raced over a mile in six trial races, with most earning themselves a race-day ticket. In the first of the two-year-old races for colts and geldings, the Bettors Delight-Itz All About Me colt Itz Bettor to Win showed plenty of style and plenty of form, leading from the barrier and looking an uncontested winner until the final few metres. A strong challenge was mounted in the dying stages of the race by the Mark Smolenski-trained colt Jay Dub (McArdle-Champagne Princess) but he was unable to run down Itz Bettor to Win, coming home second by just half a head. After sitting in the trail for most of the distance, Itz Platinum Plus, another from the Mark Jones stable, had to be content with third. Itz Bettor to Win ran the 1600 metres in 2.00.9, 800m, 57.9, 400m, 27.5.

IS YOUR POOL SAFE FOR SUMMER? Summer is the perfect time to enjoy fun-filled days in the family pool. While a pool can provide great family entertainment it is important to keep it safe for young children. The Fencing of Swimming Pools Act includes requirements to protect children from the dangers of unfenced swimming pools. Pool owners are required to ensure their pool has gates that latch properly, fences that are the right height and that there are no structures that allow children to climb over and into unsupervised pools. Pool owners have a responsibility to register their pool with Council. To learn more about safe swimming pools, visit www.ashburtondc.govt.nz

Ashburton Speedway racer Matt Honeywell gets the power down in his sprintcar. He is among the favourites for Saturday night’s War of the Wings event at Ruapuna. MAINLAND PHOTO

The War of the Wings Series hits its half-way point when the fifth round is staged at Ruapuna Speedway in Christchurch on Saturday. Rakaia’s Matt Honeywell is well placed in the series after four rounds, currently sitting in fourth. Last year’s champion Ray
Baughan from Christchurch holds a 40-point lead and has been a model of consistency with a win and two second placings so far. However his victory in Nelson came at the expense of Cromwell’s Jason Scott, who crashed out when light drizzle made the track greasy with just two laps to go. Scott, who was leading at the
time was relegated to tenth place after being deemed as the cause of the race stoppage, however, some drivers say that officials should have intervened earlier. Scott is currently second in the point’s standings followed by Brett Sullivan (Nelson) and Honeywell shares fourth spot with Nelson’s Kris Gerard. War of the Wings officials have made an alteration to the
format for their return to Ruapuna following the series opener at that track which saw seven cars starting in each heat. This weekend the entry list has been split into three groups, as opposed to four, the heat races should contain upward of ten cars in each, culminating in an ‘all in’ twenty five lap feature race. The Ashburton Speedway is
also gearing up for a big weekend with a rare Saturday evening meet as they host the DHL Saloon Speedweek final. New Zealand’s best saloon drivers will be on the track with the other grades getting an unusual twilight race meet as opposed to their usual Sunday afternoon time slot, with racing scheduled to get under way at 3pm.

Unrest threatens to derail T20 World Cup in Bangladesh Bangladesh’s cricket chief has said that next year’s Twenty20 World Cup is threatened by the country’s deadly political violence, warning there may only be weeks to save the tournament.
The 16-team competition, due to take place between March 16 and April 6, should be the biggest sporting event ever staged by Bangladesh. But the country has been gripped by violent protests in
recent weeks, with opposition supporters insisting that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina stand aside ahead of elections due next year. More than 74 people have been killed since late October.
“If this situation prevails, then any big tournament or participation of any big country will be under threat,” Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Nazmul Hassan told reporters yesterday.
“This must end in January and preferably in December.” A team of ICC inspectors declared last week that they were “happy” with security arrangements but said they would continue to monitor the situation. - AFP
