Discovery leads to emotional reunion By Heather Mackenzie

The power of Facebook played a big hand in reuniting Cath Carr with her lost ring. Losing any jewellery is bad enough, but when Carr noticed her engagement ring of nearly 50 years was no longer on her finger she was devastated. For over nine days the sleep-deprived and full of dread Carr searched everywhere. She cleaned out every cupboard, re-dug the garden, searched pot plants, called the police and tried to mentally retrace her steps. But like Pooh looking for honey, the more she looked, the more it wasn’t there. Then at 11pm last Tuesday night a phone call gave the frantic Carr a glimmer of hope. One of her friends who knew she was
missing a ring, saw a post on the Four Square Netherby Facebook page about one being found. “She apologised for calling so late, but she wanted me to know as soon as possible that it may have been found.” Carr, hopeful that it was her ring, but fearing disappointment if it wasn’t, set out to Four Square Netherby the next morning. Fear quickly turned to elation when store owner Shaun McFadden handed over a small plastic bag containing her ring. McFadden said the girls found it behind the counter and after a few days his wife Taryn put on their Facebook page they had found a ring. When Carr came to the shop she said she was so emotional it was hard for her to get the words out to describe it, McFadden said.
Knowing it was obviously hers, he handed it over and the emotional Carr promptly burst into tears. McFadden said they have had many standout moments in the shop over the years and this was another to add to the collection. “It was so humbling and heart-warming to see how much it meant to her to get it back,” he said. Gratitude was also extended to her late night caller friend. Not being on social media herself, Carr said without her call she could have remained despondently unaware of its location. “I only told a couple of friends it was missing and one of them just happened to see it on Facebook. What a coincidence, I am over the moon to have it back.” The ring is now going back in its box and will not be taken out again, Carr said.
