By APNZ staff Rain is still on track to spread across the country this weekend, bringing much-needed relief to the parched North Island and parts of the South Island heading the same way.

The remnants of Cyclone Sandra and a weather system in the Tasman Sea would move across the New Zealand from late tomorrow, bringing wet weather until Monday, the MetService said.

Severe weather warnings were in place for Westland, Nelson and Buller.

Farmers are experiencing widespread drought from an extended dry spell, with the entire North Island declared a drought zone and parts of the South Island getting drier by the day.

The announcement was made on a Manawatu sheep and beef farm

by Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy yesterday.

Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty and Hawkes Bay have already been declared to be in drought.

Manawatu, Rangitikei, Taranaki, East Coast, Wairarapa and Wellington have now been added to that list.

The declaration means that farmers in these regions will be entitled to receive Government assistance.

Mr Guy said it had become clear that nearly all farmers in every part of the North Island were facing very difficult dry conditions.

“This is a difficult time for rural families and they need to know that the Government and all New Zealanders are behind them.”

Extra government funding will be available to Rural Support Trusts who worked closely with farmers, providing support and guidance as well as rural assistance payments available from Work and Income.

By Melissa Hills A teenager found dead in Christchurch’s Hagley Park has been remembered as a “lovely grandson and brilliant student”by his grandmother.

Nick Renouf, 19, from Tauranga, who was studying for an engineering degree at Canterbury University, had been arrested for breaching a liquor ban on Wednesday night. He was found dead in an open drain in the park the next day.

His grandmother Mary Renouf, 82, speaking from Tauranga, said the family was devastated and struggling to cope with Nick’s death.

She said she had not spoken to police directly and had heard only Nick may have fallen and hit his head.

His body was found by a member of the public about midday on Thursday.

Nick Renouf “I have had no sleep since we found out. It is so hard to take because I had only seen Nick a few weeks ago when he was home for the holidays. We are such a close family and this was just totally out of the blue and unexpected.

“We have been through a very difficult time with my niece’s death last week and now this, it’s just unbelievable.”

“Nick was a brilliant student and I think he had just been offered a job for when he finished university.

I cannot believe he is gone, it’s such a waste of life. It’s come as a complete shock.

We are all totally devastated and just wish things could be different,” Mary Renouf said.

“His loss is going to leave such a big hole in the family.

We are all pulling together and my sister who lost her daughter has been staying with me and we have been comforting each other.”

Christchurch Area Commander Superintendent Andy McGregor said Mr Renouf had been arrested for a breach of a liquor ban in Riccarton Road on Wednesday night.

“Mr Renouf was processed at the Christchurch Central custody suite and released

with a pre-charge warning at around 10.40pm. We have reviewed the process and interviewed officers who dealt with Mr Renouf, and there is no indication that he was impaired in any way.

“He was engaging well with our staff and was in good health at the time he was released.”

Mr McGregor said it was believed Mr Renouf made his own way from the station.

The case has been referred to the coroner.

University of Canterbury Vice-Chancellor Dr Rod Carr offered his condolences to Mr Renouf’s family and friends.

“A sudden death such as this can be very difficult to comprehend and it is important that we support each other during this very sad time.”

“When everyone recognises you’re having a hard time you probably feel a little bit better about yourself, whereas if there’s not that recognition there’s probably people out there that think it’s their fault and they just need to harden up. This shows that they’ve done what they can but they’re dealing with something that’s beyond their control.”

The normally wet West Coast today became the first region in the South Island to apply for an official drought declaration.

About 30 people gathered at the West Coast Regional Council offices to see if data amassed over the long, dry summer supported a bid for drought assistance.

“The (meeting) decided we should apply to have a medium scale adverse event declared urgently,” Federated Farmers West Coast president Katie Milne said.

The meeting was told official soil moisture data showed the West Coast was as dry as Waikato.

“These are people that are suffering through no fault of their own, through an act of God. We have real concerns about the emotional stress and difficulties that many families are coping with and that’s the predominant benefit that comes from a drought declaration.

“It doesn’t mean any money directly to farmers, it’s just about having some competent, expert people out there who are able to be at the end of the phone, or to sit around the kitchen table and talk it through.”

The Tinwald Tavern has been ordered to close its doors due to supplying liquor to a minor in a police sting last year.

Tavern shut as penalty for breach

By Sam Morton The doors at the Tinwald Tavern will be firmly shut this weekend, following a major police sting last year.

The tavern, believed to be one of Ashburton Trust’s highest earning assets, was busted for serving an underage patron in July during the district wide controlled purchase operation.

The Ashburton Police have

imposed the penalty this weekend – falling on arguably one of the busiest days of the year for licensed premises – St Patrick’s Day. The Trust Ashburton chief executive Giles Beal acknowledged the incident and says the tavern has since held its hands up and admitted its fault.

“We were wrong and we aim not to be, but we were and we accept that.

“It’s very unfortunate this has happened,” Mr Beal said.

“We do a lot of training with our staff and it’s something we put a lot of focus into.

“We’ll take this on the chin and move forwards, but we are surprised to see how long it has taken for the application to actually happen,” he said.

However, Mr Beal is confident the loss of earnings won’t affect operating targets going into the future and insists

the trust remains on track to meet its target. In place of the Tinwald Tavern, the trust will be running courtesy buses from Tinwald through to Ashburton and back again, most of the weekend.

Meanwhile, other bars and drinking holes are gearing up for a big St Patrick’s Day. Greg Kelly, of Kelly’s Cafe and Bar, rates the day as one of the best in the year and is looking forward to hosting a

“typically large crowd”.

“It’s one of those days where everyone is in great spirits and a lot of fun is had,” Mr Kelly said.

“I’ve got the Guinness stocked up and I’m confident they won’t drink me dry.

Drink driving discharges dismissed

By Rebecca Quilliam Senior legal figures do not believe there is a problem with the number of drink-drivers before the courts who receive a discharge without conviction.

Figures show 239 offenders have escaped conviction since 2007.

Chief District Court Judge Jan-Marie Doogue said by law, judges must impose the least restrictive sentence when using

their discretion in sentencing.

A discharge without conviction was the appropriate sentence when the consequences of a conviction far outweighed the culpability of the offender’s actions, she said.

But even if a person was discharged, that did not necessarily mean they would escape punishment.

“They might also be required by the judge to undertake rehabilitation, pay reparation to the victim, or the judge may order

order the restitution of any property involved,” Judge Doogue said.

Law Society president Jonathan Temm said only a small number of people were let off drink driving charges.

“Less than 2 per cent of cases fall into this category ... that’s because the threshold test is quite high.”

Mr Temm said he understood anti drink-driving groups being concerned with any discretion but cautioned people against

having an “absolutely emphatic, no discretion rule”.

“Because if you do that, then you are going to create injustice.”

Mr Temm said judges had to take into account circumstances for first-time offenders with an adequate explanation they could prove.

If the breath or blood alcohol level was on the cusp of the legal limit, discretion might be offered.

Auckland lawyer Stuart Blake, who specialises in drink-driving and traffic law, said he obtained

this month a discharge for a trainee pilot whose student debt exceeded $100,000 and who considered a conviction would prevent him getting a job to repay it.

In another case, a West Auckland man was discharged because his business interests required “extensive unimpeded international travel”, and a woman was discharged because she was an international model with job prospects in Hong Kong, America and Canada.

NZ voted ‘one of the friendliest countries’

By Gabrielle Stuart There’s smiles all around for tourists travelling New Zealand, after the country was ranked one of the friendliest to visit.

A report by the World Economic Forum gave Kiwis a 6.8 out of seven score for ‘Attitude towards foreign visitors’, ranking New Zealand alongside Iceland as the friendliest countries in the world.

The ‘Travel and Tourism Competiveness Index’ ranked 140 countries on attractiveness, accessibility and competitiveness to tourists, and placed New Zealand 12th overall, above the Netherland, Japan and Hong Kong.

And although Iceland was judged an equally friendly nation, overall they ranked four places below New Zealand, in 16th place in the rankings.

James Urquhart of the Ashburton Tourism Board said the statistics did not surprise him.

“There are two things that affect it, I think. The first thing, the biggest, is the etiquette we’re

He said the investment in New Zealand tourism was huge, and it was no surprise that it was paying off.

Mr Urquhart said it wasn’t just training that made New Zealand a great place to visit.

“The Kiwi attitude is to respect everyone, to smile and give them the time of day. We get taught it in school; it’s in our blood and our genes. I think that’s why it rubs off on the tourists – it’s just the way we’re brought up.”

The report took many factors into account in their rankings, including government policy, health and hygiene, transport, cost and attitude towards tourists.

The figures were calculated per head of population, making it easier for New Zealand to rank competitively against larger economies.

Some of the areas where New Zealand ranked highly were in sanitation, police reliability, number of hotel rooms available, quality of the natural environment, and number of seats in sports stadiums per head of population. Lowest ranking areas were World Heritage sites, carbon emissions, purchasing power, threatened species and visa requirements.

Weather to shine on show

By Susan Sandys Temperatures of 20 degrees plus are forecast for Methven today, creating “fantastic” conditions for the A & P show, says the show’s president.

Rob Withers said the warm temperatures and high cloud forecast should prove ideal for the country-comes-to-town highlight of the year.

He believed a major drawcard would be the Young Farmers‘ Aorangi Regional Final staged in the grounds, as eight farm-

ers go head-to-head in a number of challenging tasks.

There will be three from Mid Canterbury clubs - Sam Bryan of the Foothills Young Farmers’ Club, Matthew Bell of the Hinds Young Farmers‘ Club and Nigel Woodhead of the Pendarves Young Farmers’ Club.

“That will pull them in because that’s quite a big do,” Mr Withers said.

A new event this year would be a fundraising gift calf auction. Farmers had gifted calves, and proceeds of the auction would be split five ways to

the A&P association itself, IHC, St John, Ashburton Cancer Society, and towards a Mount Hutt College agricultural education scholarship.

Mr Withers said traditionally the association had been gifted lambs, but the number had fallen from over 100 to about 40 over the years.

This reflected a shift to dairying in the district, and it made sense to now hold a gift calf auction instead.

Association members had recently taken out old sheep yards at the grounds and

installed purpose built pens for auctioning calves in their place.

The show is this year seeing the return of a goat section after 20 years, showing good entry numbers.

Overall entries are on a par with last year.

The show will feature its signature woodchopping competition, horse events, dog trials, highland dancing, shearing, children’s entertainment, top team event, sheep riding, steer riding, rides, arts and crafts and more.

Slow journey to Methven show

By Susan Sandys A procession of about one dozen vintage tractors rolled into Methven yesterday, completing a three-hour journey from Leeston.

Travelling at about 30 kilometres per hour, the tractors and their vintage machinery enthusiast drivers were on their way to the Methven A&P Show.

One of the drivers, Jonty Ward, driving a 1950s Case tractor which was towing a 1940s Case tractor, said the journey had gone well.

“It’s sort of been a tradition, there’s always been a group come

to the show from Leeston,” Mr Ward said.

And the Methven vintage enthusiasts returned the favour, travelling up to Leeston on their tractors for the Leeston show in October.

Mr Ward said the trip was made with common road courtesy, and they would drive with a gap between them so motorists behind could overtake.

“We generally get a few who need to pass on the (Rakaia) bridge, but most of them are pretty okay really,” Mr Ward said.

“We spread out a bit so people can pass under between us.”

State Highway One bridge at about 11am. He said motorists rarely lost their patience, and more often than not would wave as they overtook.

“I think it’s because it’s old tractors and it can look a bit different and people can give us a wave or a toot. Generally people are pretty good.”

The drivers all belonged to the Ellesmere Vintage Club, and were mostly retired farmers who had restored old tractors they once used on farm.

He himself was just 18, but got interested in vintage tractors through his grandfather who was a retired farmer.

Dunedin gang member’s term appeal dismissed A Dunedin gang member who used $20,000 of government money to fund a gang cannabis dealing operation has lost his appeal against a four-year prison sentence.

Korrey Teeati Cook, 36, was one of four Dunedin Mongrel Mob Notorious gang members involved with the We Against Violence Trust, which received $56,000 through the Government’s Whanau Ora programme between July 2011 and April last year. Cook used $20,000 of the money to buy cannabis which he and his associates were planning to sell.

But the first consignment of about 3.2kg of cannabis from the North Island was seized by police from the offenders’ unattended vehicle on the Cook Strait ferry in March last year.

Another 2.7kg buy of cannabis was seized in April from one of Cook’s co-offenders who was bringing it to Dunedin.

The police had been intercepting text and phone messages between members of the group.

Then in May, Cook tried to arrange another consignment.

But he became suspicious about possible electronic interception by the police and there was no evidence that deal was completed.

He eventually pleaded guilty to an indictable charge of conspiring with others to sell cannabis,

two of possessing cannabis for supply and one of dishonestly converting $20,000 from the We Against Violence Trust, of which he was a trustee.

Dunedin District Court Judge Michael Crosbie sentenced Cook to a total of four years’ jail last November - concurrent terms of three years and three months on each of the cannabis-related charges, with an extra nine months for the criminal breach of trust, that sentence to be added to two years and nine months Cook was already serving on unrelated charges.

Cook challenged the sentence, counsel Sarah SaundersonWarner submitting to the Court of Appeal that the starting point

for the cannabis offending - four and a half years - was too high and the six month uplift for offending while on bail was also too high, resulting in a sentence which was manifestly excessive.

The Court of Appeal said Judge Crosbie found the cannabis offending was serious, warranting a starting point of four and a half years. He treated the criminal breach of trust as an aggravating feature for the overall offending, justifying an uplift of nine months.

That meant an overall starting point of five years and three months. He added six months for Cook’s prior drug and honesty convictions, and an extra six months because the offenc-

es were committed while Cook was on bail on the unrelated charges. That made a total term of six years and three months which the judge discounted by 25 per cent for the guilty pleas.

But having regard to a sense of proportionality, the judge then reduced the sentence for the cannabis offending to three years and three months, with a cumulative nine months for the criminal breach of trust, the four years to be cumulative on Cook’s existing sentence.

The Court of Appeal found the most significant features in rating the seriousness of the offending, compared with other relevant cases, were the scale and relative frequency of the three actual and proposed cannabis buys; the resolve shown with significant commercial scale purchases even though the March and April consignments had been confiscated; the criminal gang context and the facilitation of the buys by a criminal breach of trust in misappropriating $20,000 from a charitable trust.

“Given those features, we are satisfied the sentencing judge was well within the appropriate range in nominating a starting point of four years and six months’ imprisonment,” the court said.

The appeal was dismissed.

Scholarship plan ‘great’

By Myles Hume A North Island school’s plan to headhunt current pupils and support them so they return in a teaching role is one that has been discussed at a Mid Canterbury college.

Auckland’s Mt Albert Grammar has created a new scholarship which will cover the course fees for a stand-out pupil in a one-year graduate diploma in teaching.

Ashburton College principal Grant McMillan backed the idea, saying it was a great way to promote the profession among pupils, and it was even something college staff had discussed informally.

“We have looked at some pupils, nationally there is a shortage of language and Maori teachers and we have looked at identifying some students from timeto-time,” Mr McMillan said.

With Mt Albert College seeking pupils while they were still at school, Mr McMillan said the college would search further down the track, when students were in their second year of tertiary study as they had a better grounding of their career path.

Mr McMillan stressed it was only an idea spoken among staff, but with external support and strategic planning he believed it could be a viable idea for schools in the future.

With at least four teachers at college being former pupils, they provided an insight to the school that no one else, not even Mr McMillan, could bring.

“Most people remember their last two years of school, so looking back these teachers can compare and contrast the programmes we are doing and it gives us research in terms of getting a sense of what’s changed.

“Michael Clark (current college teacher) was head boy, so students can go up to him, with some things being universal, and ask him how he handled certain aspects of the roll at the time.”

Mt Albert Grammar principal Dale Burden said the scholarship was established to maintain the quality of teaching and to push the profession as a worthwhile career to its pupil.

Mr McMillan agreed.

“It’s a great job, and a great profession to be in, you can really want a make a difference,” he said.

Hardline on couch fires

Police in Dunedin will take a hardline on those involved with couch fires in the student quarter following a spike in call-outs last month.

Police, Fire Service, University of Otago and Otago Regional Council representatives met earlier this week to discuss recent couch fires and disorder in the North Dunedin area.

As a result of that meeting, police will no longer be offering diversion or pre-charge warnings to those found lighting fires in the area.

Instead, those caught lighting fires “will be off to court”, police tactical co-ordinator Sergeant Dave Scott said yesterday.

That decision was prompted by an incident in the student quarter last week, when two young men jumped off a fire engine which had been called to extinguish a couch fire.

The fire truck was also surrounded by a large group of revellers and bottles were thrown, prompting the Fire Service to call a meeting about the disorder.

Fire Service East Otago Area manager Laurence Vight said he called for the meeting, following concerns for the “safety and well-being not only of my personnel but also of those participating in these activities”.

At that meeting, all four organisations agreed to a “zero tolerance toward such behaviour”.

Statistics for the month of February show a gradual decline in couch fires in the campus area, with 10 in February 2010, but last month that number had increased to 32.

Police warning for boy racers

By Roger Moroney Hawke’s Bay police have taken to Facebook to battle boy-racer activities in the region.

The latest addition to the police site pulls no punches - stating “if you don’t want to keep seeing your friends die, help us out”.

Within two hours of the “What’s Going on With Boy Racers?” message appearing just after 9am yesterday there had been 151 “likes” and 106 comments, with the majority critical of what was happening on the Bay roads.

“We are expecting some robust debate and there is already some real community outrage about what’s happening starting to emerge ... locals won’t stand for it,” Eastern District communica-

tions manager Kris McGehan said.

“We want to get the message directly to boy racers and we want them to realise we are taking these issues very seriously.”

Two major crashes in the Bay over the past month have been put down to speeding cars - racing or in high-speed “chains”.

The crashes cost the life of 18-year-old Maree Shafer on February 19 and left 21-yearold Frances Millar in a coma in Hawke’s Bay Hospital’s intensive care unit after a crash on Te Mata-Mangateretere Rd early last Saturday. Both were passengers.

“We’re trying real hard to keep our roads safe, yet there’s a bunch of people who seem to think that racing and hooning around the place is cool,” said Ms McGehan.

“They seem to forget that while they’re getting their thrills, they’re also putting people’s lives in danger.”

Facebook would get directly to the drivers intent on pushing the limits and breaking the law, as well as people who wanted to step in and help police.

The site pulls no punches, stating: “If you know who is involved in these groups, we want to hear about it. Who’s leading the trains and setting them up? If we don’t get to the bottom of all this, more of you guys will end up either in hospital or on a mortuary slab.”

Ms McGehan said police were also monitoring individual Facebook sites and other social media in a bid to get a heads-up on what the boy racer fraternity was up to.

A middle-aged woman was rushed to Ashburton Hospital after a collision sent the ute she was driving into a spin, flinging debris a significant distance from the crash scene.

A wheel landed in a hedge 25m from the severely damaged ute and other parts lay strewn across the intersection of Mitcham and Hepburns Roads about 8.30am yesterday.

A Canterbury District Health Board spokesperson was unable to provide the woman’s condition due to the patient requesting privacy.

Senior Sergeant Grant Russell, of Ashburton, said the high-speed crash happened after a southbound black sedan failed to slow

down for the give-way sign at the intersection, ploughing into the side of the Toyota Hilux ute the woman was driving towards Ashburton.

Mr Russell said the black sedan hit the ute, sending it skidding sideways into a roadside concrete culvert, before finishing in the middle of Mitcham Road, about 30 metres from the intersection.

The black sedan was pulled to the side of the road with a shredded front bumper, the driver and passengers shaken but unhurt.

Mr Russell said it appeared the woman was not hurt in the initial impact, instead it was when the driver’s side smashed into the concrete culvert that she received her injuries.

Two fire engines, four police cars and an ambulance attended the scene.

Man dead for weeks?

A 75-year-old man may have been lying dead in his house for weeks before his body was discovered yesterday, Dunedin police say.

Acting Senior Sergeant Chris McLellan said police were alerted when a medical practitioner contacted police at 5.30pm and asked them to check on the man, whom he had not heard from recently.

“They were worried he hadn’t been in to pick up his prescriptions.”

It was difficult to say how long the man had been dead, Mr McLellan said.

Police were looking through mail, past chemist visits and other items in the man’s house to determine exactly how long he had been been dead.

“He could have been there for

weeks.”

Dunedin police were still attempting to contact the man’s next of kin last night.

The body was taken to the Dunedin mortuary last night and the matter had been referred to the coroner.

The cause of death was not believed to be suspicious.

The man had been living in his own house in Caversham, Mr McLellan said.

“Unfortunately, we have people living alone that don’t have family contact or people checking on them.

“It’s a reminder that if you’ve got elderly residents next door and you haven’t seen them for a while, it’s a good idea to give police a call.

Any survivors of the first explosion that tore through the Pike River underground coalmine, killing 29 workers on November 19, 2010, would have been stumbling around in the dark, a hearing in the Greymouth District Court has been told.

Judge Jane Farish is hearing, by formal proof, evidence that the Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment (formerly the Labour Department) has compiled against the Pike River Coal Company.

The ministry has laid nine charges against the company, alleging that it could have taken numerous practicable steps to avoid the explosion, the most significant being that it should have placed the main ventilation fan outside the mine.

Ministry health and safety officer Jane Birdsall said Pike River had failed on many fronts but in particular the lack of proper ventilation and methane gas control. She also noted that the rescue chamber and smoke lines, or lifelines, were inadequate.

The smoke lines that hang from the ceiling are supposed to guide workers, in blackout conditions, to the rescue chamber. Inside Pike mine they were non-existent in some places and damaged in others, tangled with other fittings or lying on the floor.

These faults had been brought to management’s attention but not rectified. Pike River had also ignored its own safety recommendations regarding the main fan.

Ms Birdsall said the decision to place the fan underground was “rare, if not unique to Pike”.

However, as risk assessment controls the company was meant to place the fan in an area of stone so there was no possibility of it sparking a coal gas explosion. In addition, “explosion paths” were to be created around it to divert pressure from the fan and enable it to continue to operate at times of emergency.

Instead, the fan was sited further into the mine in the coal seam and the explosion paths had not been created, leaving it unprotected in the path of the main explosion.

The only escape route available for the miners, up the ventilation shaft, involved an initial 55m vertical climb which most, if not all, would have been incapable of at the best of times.

The only underground fresh air base, 1km away from the furthest workings, relied only on a piece of brattice to protect it from gases.

Some underground machinery that should have been fitted with gas detectors was not, the mine did not have a proper methane drainage method, and recommendations that this be rectified had also been ignored, Ms Birdsall said.

At the end of the evidence, Judge Farish reserved her decision to April 18.

Last August, Judge Farish presided over the prosecution of Pike River contractor VLI, a subsidiary of Sydney-based Valley Longwall International, which had admitted three charges; each carrying a maximum fine of $250,000. Those charges related to its failure to take all practicable steps to protect its employees Josh Ufer, 25, Ben Rockhouse, 21, and Joseph Dunbar, 17.

At the time she was criticised for fining the company just $46,000. The judge entered convictions on two counts and imposed the $46,000 fine on the other after the Crown indicated it was not expecting a financial penalty on all three.

The decision drew sharp criticism from the miners’ union and the victims’ families, who considered the fine lenient.

Acquitted over sisters’ deaths A man and a woman have been found not guilty of manslaughter after a high-speed crash near Tauranga in 2011 that left two teenage sisters dead.

Phillippa Vanessa Morehu, 37, who is the girls’ mother, and one of their cousins, Haki Tetuere Davey, 18, were acquitted by a jury in the High Court at Hamilton yesterday afternoon over the Christmas Day crash.

The Crown alleged that Ms Morehu, Mr Davey and another of the dead girls’ cousins, Hetaraka Hikurangi Reihana, 21, were racing at speeds of up to 140km/h before the crash on Welcome Bay Rd.

They each faced two charges of manslaughter after the deaths of Brooklyn, 13, and Merepeka, 14. Reihana changed his pleas to guilty on Thursday.

The public gallery was packed with friends and relatives as the verdicts were read out yesterday afternoon.

Somebody yelled out “Love you my brother, can’t wait to see you,” to Mr Davey as he was led from the dock.

Ms Morehu was supported by several young women as she left the court room.

She refused to speak outside as she was led to her car.

The jury took only a matter of hours to reach the not guilty

verdicts.

On Thursday in a surprise change of plea, Hetaraka Reihana called out “guilty”before the registrar of the court could finish reading each of the charges laid against him.

The Crown’s argument was that the trio had been drinking before they were involved in a race in which Reihana lost control of the vehicle he was driving and crashed into an oncoming ute driven by Brett McCready.

Reihana’s lawyer, Panama Le’au’anae, told the court on Thursday the guilty plea had come “at a very late stage” but the accused had now accepted responsibility for his actions.

Rerihana will be sentenced on May 31. Crown prosecutor Greg Hollister-Jones claimed Reihana was not acting on his own. He said Morehu held influence over both Reihana and Davey as their aunt and set the pace in a race to the family urupa (graveyard).

Davey’s lawyer, Paul Mabey QC, said there was no evidence to show that his client was racing either Morehu or Reihana to get to the urupa first.

Morehu’s lawyer, Glen Dixon, said there was insufficient evidence to suggest she was party to a conversation about a race or that she encouraged one.

Principal rural fire officer Don Geddes said the incident was dealt with promptly, but pointed out it was a lesson to all farmers. “Try to remember we are in a very dry patch at the moment and think ‘what if?’, before you light that match,” he said. The farmer will not be charged.

Digging in for Mt Somers bike race Mayfield and District Lions Club members have been preparing for their next annual Mt Somers bike race by clearing a section of its track with a digger. Spokesperson Robert Schikker said the club was grateful to the Acland family for the use of their station for the event, which attracts 600 to 800 competitors per year. The race, on April 21, features a 34km, 27km, and 20km event. All profits go to local and national beneficiaries. Last year the club gave $20,000 to Ronald McDonald House to assist after the Christchurch earthquake.

The search for a missing Auckland man who disappeared off a Northland beach continued yesterday. Alexy Ivanov, 34, who is presumed drowned, was last seen entering the water at Uretiti beach about 5pm on Wednesday.

Police yesterday continued searching the coastline and the Navy was called in to assist with a sonar search of the water. Department of Conservation staff at a campground alerted police on Wednesday after noticing Mr Ivanov’s clothing and car had not been touched for an hour.

The good news on drin

The message is The number of people getting behind the wheel after boozing up seems to be falling in Mid Canterbury, but as reporter SAM MORTON finds out, the problem isn’t going away anytime soon. very year, Mid Canterbury motorists share the road with shameless drunk drivers.

While the district’s percentage of boozed drivers is dropping, on average there are 150 people each year still choosing to put their own lives and the lives of thousands of innocent people at fatal risk by turning the key.

Drivers who had one too many, have stumbled to their cars, fumbled for their keys and driven off.

Down the road, a few metres or a few kilometres – that split second of poor judgement could potentially cost them their life, or worse, someone else’s – but that’s no concern to them.

In some cases, in what is now becoming an unacceptable part of society, many people would simply stand by and watch – despite knowing the person had been knocking them back all night and was not fit to drive.

Yet, they still let them go and no form of intervention is considered.

Statistics show it’s a harsh reality of our country and that of all countries – but according to the district’s top cop, “it’s just the Kiwi way”.

Mid-South Police Area Commander Inspector Dave Gaskin was blunt about the issue, blaming an adapt-

ed society and readily accessible drinking culture. “In many ways, society is encouraging us to drink to these dangerous limits and that really needs to change.

“Rarely can you go out and feel comfortable not having a drink and it’s almost unrecognised pressure to pick up a drink and fit in with the crowd.

“These days you get hassled for drinking anything but alcohol and that’s really quite sad,” Inspector Gaskin said.

However, it appears the pressure is starting to come off and advertising campaigns may have started sinking in – particularly with youth.

Ad slogans like, “stop a drink driver, you’re a bloody legend”, and the infamous Maori-targeted campaign involving George and his ghost chips and a young fella standing in the way of his “bro” and saying, “I don’t think you should drive, you’re drunk – just crash here”.

It’s ads like these that Inspector Gaskin believes are slowly making a difference – but he is under no illusion that dozens of drivers still continue to ignore key messages and push their own limits – in the hope they won’t get caught.

“It’s hard to know exactly how effective they (ad campaigns) are, but anecdo-

tally we have found and heard that some of these more recent campaigns have impacted youth quite hard and from where I’m sitting, that can only ever be positive.

“It’s about trying to get people

to realise that tomorrow is another day and that’s the difficult thing behind these figures ... many, for whatever reason, tend to think they have to get home or they have to leave and the only option they have is to drive.

“Wrong ... we have taxi services, courtesy buses and a logical concept called sober drivers – any one of those should be well in place before the night begins ... sadly, in some cases, they’re not and that’s where we have these terrible incidents occur,” Inspector Gaskin said.

In Mid Canterbury, figures tell an encouraging story of progress – but high profile incidents last year suggest there is plenty of room to improve.

Leading up to last year, the Ashburton District Court experienced a seven-year spike in drinkdriving cases, all filtering through the dock.

Last year, according to Statistics New Zealand, the district recorded at least 50 fewer cases than 2010/11 and almost 70 cases fewer than 2009/10.

Although, by all accounts and court records so far this year, 2013 appears to be spiralling in the other direction – which is of concern to Inspector Gaskin.

“I’m really not sure why that is, although I’d like to think some really positive work around alcohol education in schools and at sports clubs and national campaigns, mixed with good policing is certainly making the difference.

“I think the number of drink-drivers caught on our roads every year will change and continue to fluctuate, but with the figure seemingly reducing, we’ll take that any day.

“Too many alcohol-related deaths occurred in Mid Canterbury last year and we don’t like seeing that ... no one does. The fact is people do die when they get behind the controls of a car boozed and the sad thing is when

they make that ultra poor decision, other people die too,” Inspector Gaskin said.

Although like other centres, Mid Canterbury has had its fair share of problems, all the signs point to a vast improvement across the board despite the poor start to 2013.

Ashburton Community Alcohol and Drug Service (Acads) general manager Chris Clarke believes the issue and the serious consequences of drink-driving are starting to filter through to youth.

The organisation carries out four specialist programmes for recidivist drink-drivers every year and boasts a success rate of 75 per cent – it’s clear the course is having special benefits throughout the community.

“People on our programme really do go well and we continue to treat them for two years.

“Some do have some very serious alcohol problems, but a lot of them don’t actually think about why that is ... and that’s where our specialist services come into it,” Mrs Clarke said.

“The message we constantly send is ‘you do not make good choices when you’ve been drinking – full stop’.”

The course runs once a week for six weeks and often people are referred by probation – or sometimes ordered to undergo the programme by a judge.

“Tackling the issue needs the support and involvement from each and every person in the community – it’s a case of standing up and telling people not to drive if you know they have been drinking.

“Some people don’t feel comfortable about doing that, but it’s fair to say we’re all getting better at it.

Despite the worrying number of people still making poor choices, the laws in New Zealand have remained relatively unchanged.

The zero tolerance law for drivers under 20, passed in 2011, has been a good step forward, according to Inspector Gaskin, but he would personally like to see laws tightened further.

“To be honest, this is my view only and not necessarily that of my team, but I think it would be a huge step in the right direction if the legal breath alcohol limit was reduced.

“That would really start to deter people from even having that one or two drinks. If they know they can only have one and one only or none – then I believe the attitudes would start to change

significantly.” But that clearly won’t stop them all. Interlocking devices, testing a person’s breath alcohol limit before starting the engine, were introduced to New Zealand last year and have since proved to be a reasonable obstacle for recidivist drink-drivers – but Inspector Gaskin says it’s not the answer.

So what is the answer to ousting drink-driving for good?

“That’s anyone’s guess – I don’t think anybody has the right answer, because I don’t think there is one. In some cases, it doesn’t matter what rules or legislation is put in place, there will always be a small percentage that will refuse to abide and put themselves and innocent road users and people at serious risk – and in other cases there are people who simply cannot go the day with-

out a drink,” he said.

“There will always be some who don’t get caught, but rest assured they will one day.

“The reality is, as long as the temptation of alcohol is there for some, we will always have a minority of drink drivers on our roads,” Inspector Gaskin said.

With statistics backing him up and the dozen or so repeat drinkdrivers on an Acads programme on each occasion – it would be hard to disagree with the inspector.

But, keep the ad campaigns rolling, keep the programmes going and keep hammering home the message to New Zealand.

Remember: “If you stop a drink driver, you’re a bloody legend”.

Solid Energy’s $27b expansion plans revealed

By Adam Bennett Prime Minister John Key yesterday released documents detailing Solid Energy’s ambitious expansion plans which would have required capital investment of $2-3 billion a year until 2021 - or a total of up to $27 billion.

Mr Key released the papers in response to Labour’s claims he misled the public about Solid Energy approaching his Government over a $1 billion investment to become the Petrobras of New Zealand, a request he says was turned down.

However, in his appearance before a parliamentary committee on Thursday, John Palmer who was Solid Energy’s chairman at the time said while the company made the approach, there was never any expectation the Crown would bear the cost of the required investment and a figure of $1 billion was never mentioned.

In the 2010 documents, Solid Energy is reported as tabling a proposal to transform itself into a National Resource Company (NRC) whose operations would include coal mining, lignite conversion to higher value products, coal seam, underground coal gasification, and marine methane hydrates.

“Solid Energy states that the objective of the NRC proposal is to stimulate an accelerated development and use of New Zealand’s natural resources and to capture maximum value for New Zealand.”

The proposal required an estimated investment of $15.3 billion but Treasury said the proposal sought indicative approval “for total capital investment (including dividends and cashflow) of $2-3 billion per annum with cumulative investment of $27 billion”.

Mr Key said shortly after Solid Energy’s problems, including $389 million of debt, were revealed last month, the company approached his Government seeking a capital injection “in the order of about $1 billion to turn this company into the Petrobras equivalent in New Zealand”.

Mr Palmer on Thursday told MPs: “Were we talking to the Government about the possibility of capital and receiving that from the Crown? The answer is no.”

The documents do not appear to contain reference to a request for an injection of capital from the Crown of $1 billion or any amount, beyond a comment that “any request for capital will need to be considered on a case by case basis and in context with other requests to the Crown for capital”.

SBW show rolls in

By Michael Brown One of the main things Sonny Bill Williams craves is to “go about his business” as a returning rugby league player but it’s an impossible goal when you’re arguably the most famous sportsman in Australasia.

The 27-year-old’s return to the game five years after walking out on the Bulldogs has dominated pre-season talk and his pre-recorded thoughts transmitted on Channel 9 during the NRL season opener between the Roosters and Rabbitohs became the most-talked about aspect of the opening weekend.

It polarised opinion, in much the same way Williams seems to have done throughout his professional sporting career, and left the second-rower a little perplexed.

“That was the only media I did [that week],” he told a large media contingent after Roosters training at North Harbour Stadium yesterday. “I tried to stay away

from it all. I guess I was just doing what I was told to do and it all got blown out of proportion - as they do on that side of the ditch.

“I have just gone about my business. I haven’t really done any media. This is probably my first big one since I came back.

Everything I seem to say gets blown out of proportion. I just go about my business and that’s what I will do at Eden Park this week.”

Business should be good for the Warriors this weekend. Brand SBW is strong, and everyone looks to cash in, and the Warriors expect to attract upwards of 30,000 at Eden Park even though they were embarrassed 40-10 in their first game of the season against Parramatta.

Most want to see Williams, and discover if he can recapture the sort of form that made him a phenomenon in his Bulldogs days and then as an All Black.

Some want to see him fail, but most are just curious.

For many Roosters, Williams

is the perfect teammate not only for what he might be able to do on the field.

“It’s beautiful,” five-eighth and former Warrior James Maloney said.

“We all fly under the radar. It’s sensational. It’s part and parcel for him. He draws a crowd wherever he goes and that’s the bloke he is. It’s great having him on our side. I would rather be playing with him than against him.”

Williams, who scored a try in 51 workmanlike minutes last weekend, is trying to ease his way back into the game. He certainly doesn’t think he’s found his groove yet, although he has been promoted to the starting lineup to tackle the Warriors.

“It’s still taking t i m e to get

there, I think,” he said. “It will take me a few weeks yet to feel fully comfortable.

“It’s been five years out of the game and I’ve come back from injury as well. I just want to do the basics well and concentrate on my preparation rather than what is going on off the field.

“Coming from playing a high level with the Chiefs and the All Blacks, everyone is looking for that magical play but, for me, it’s about doing my core skills as good as I can. When I keep it simple, big plays usually come off.

“Being back in the forwards is probably the biggest thing I have to get used to, whereas before [in rugby] I was out with the pretty boys kicking stones out wide.

It’s going to take me a while but it’s a long year.”

• Ingram calls it quits Two-time Olympian Melissa Ingram has decided to retire from elite swimming after 10 years at the top level of the sport.

The Commonwealth Games and World Championship medallist made the announcement on the eve of the New Zealand Swimming Championships, starting on Sunday in Auckland. Ingram, whose decision to bid farewell to the sport was matched by fellow London Olympian Carl O’Donnell, said it was the right time to move on.

By Jonathan Leask It took a little longer than expected, but Glen Currie crossed the finish line of the Godzone Adventure race at 4.07am yesterday morning after 118 hours of racing to finish 12th.

The race got off to a good start for Currie’s Orion Health team before they went off the map in the fourth stage which was supposed to be a 59km trek over the Dingle Burn mountain range.

Pegged as the hardest stage pre-race, Orion made a big navigation mistake entering the Dingle Burn and travelled

off their map, which they’d cut down to size thinking they wouldn’t need it.

In what was supposed to be a 59km trek over the Dingle Burn range turned into a 32 hour, 90km nightmare.

At around 6.30pm on Tuesday, day three, they realised their mistake but couldn’t get out before dark, having been hemmed in by a gorge and thick bush.

They hunkered down until first light and carried on, forced to take the long route around Lake Hawea because of the easier navigation but racked up an additional 31km on foot to fall behind.

They made it out on Wednesday morning after 32

hours in the bush, as Seagate was closing in on the finish line, and headed out on the 55km mountain bike before they hit the Clutha River for 90km kayak down to Lake Dunstan.

They paddled through the evening and devised a plan for a final assault on day five.

Their tactic was to travel up to the top of the Pisa Range in the dark so that they hit the difficult navigation on the top in daylight.

However, navigation was again an issue, taking six hours to get up to the top and they took what was described by the organisers as “some interesting routes” along the way.

They finally reached the tran-

sition at 10.43pm and quickly set about organising their bikes with the main aim of reaching the Canyon Swing site before 5am so that they could abseil and not be held up for a Canyon Swing at 8am, and reach the finish line faster.

The plan worked.

They motored along the 72km mountain bike by torchlight, reaching the Canyon Swing in time to opt for the abseil before continuing on to the finish, some 43 hours after Seagate.

When quizzed about the navigational issues on both the mountain treks after the early hours finish navigator Wayne Oxenham claimed they only got lost once.

Vettel leader of the pack

By Robert Grant Mark Webber shone briefly but again it was world champion Sebastian Vettel who continued to assert his dominance in practice for the Australian Grand Prix.

Vettel led both of yesterday’s 90-minute sessions, taking the first small step on the road to a fourth consecutive drivers’ championship.

Red Bull’s one-two was the first indication of their pace after topsy-turvy results from a rainswept Catalunya track in Spain during pre-season testing.

Using the new Pirelli supersoft tyres, Vettel sliced more than a second from his pacesetting time in the first session.

His team-mate Webber leapfrogged the German with 40 minutes left but, five minutes later, Vettel had reinforced his brilliance.

He set the first lap under the 1 minute 26 second mark for the day.

Vettel jumped back to the head of the list with a 1m25.908s time, ahead of Webber’s 1m26.172s lap.

Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg had his revenge on new teammate Lewis Hamilton when he finished third quickest, two-tenths of a second behind Webber.

Lotus driver Kimi Raikkonen continued his challenge, moving from sixth fastest in the opening session to fourth in the second period.

Hamilton dropped to seventh while the Ferraris of Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso also slipped down the order.

Nearing the end of the session, Hamilton speared off the track into a tyre wall but was unhurt while Webber spun and resumed running.

Australian Torro Rosso driver Daniel Ricciardo reversed the positions from the first session with team-mate Jean-Eric Vergne, finishing 14th quickest, three spots ahead of the French driver.

On a mission for Maadi medals

The nerves will be starting to trickle in as thousands of secondary school rowers descend on Lake Karapiro for the biggest week of the season.

The Maadi Cup, the National Secondary Schools’ Championships, start on Monday, but the crews are already pouring into the area this weekend from the four corners of the country.

After months of preparation and planning some 2000 rowers are chasing glory in New Zealand’s largest regatta.

College had some light workouts at the start of the week before sending their boats north on Wednesday.

The bodies will turn up today and so too will the nerves.

“You always get a few nerves

before a big regatta but it’s a good thing,” said coach Steve Beveridge.

“If you turn up too casual and don’t have the heart rate up in the starter’s box you probably won’t go too well.”

And at Maadi, delivering on day one is the key with a poor result in the heats making for a long week of watching.

So college is looking to hit the heats hard and make the most of that nervous energy.

Luckily the college crews are all scheduled to race on day one.

“Everyone’s having a row on Monday.

“You don’t really want to have kids sitting on the bank all day waiting.

“You can’t really do anything with them other than have them wait.

It’s far better to get straight into it.”

The heats on Monday and Tuesday are the key to the week

and college is intent on doing better than last year’s effort.

At Lake Ruataniwha in 2012 they had two bronze medals with three A finals and five B finals appearances.

Kate Hayman holds the South Island girls’ under 17 singles title after a convincing seven second win at the South Island Championships to maintain an unbeaten record in the singles this season.

Last year she won bronze in the singles.

Hayman also combined with Georgia Lysaght to win bronze in the under 16 doubles, and will be in medal contention after a silver performance at the South Islands.

The lightweight double of Matthew Beveridge and Adam Hodge have only been working together for a month but are a chance at a medal after a strong showing at the South Islands, com-

ing in second in a four-way fight on the line.

Beveridge also had strong performances coming fourth in the under 16 boys’ singles and the under 16 boys’ doubles with Matthew Rae and could figure for a berth in three A finals.

Last year’s under 16 coxed four made the A final and the new crew combination of Lysaght, Jemma Rotch, Olivia Fleming, Jessica Jary and cox Maddy Davidson have come on strongly in the last month, with a bronze finish a fortnight ago.

The variable at the nationals is the step up in competition with the addition of the North Island crews.

College, and the rest of the South Island schools, will be going into the unknown against the North Island crews having to judge their strength on heat times after the North Island Champs were blown out last weekend.

“You don’t know what to expect out of the North Island and can’t take much out of their championships last week because it was pretty rough and they got blown out.

“But you don’t worry about times. You just worry about the distance between you and the next boat.”

Beveridge also explained the disparity between the two locations with rowers on Ruataniwha working harder against the current while at Karapiro the racing goes with the current.

That’s why Beveridge will take his crews out for a “light paddle”, once they get their base set up for the week, to get familiarised.

“We are pretty fortunate again that most of them have rowed here before in 2011 and we only have six or seven who will be racing at Karapiro for the first time.”

Another Mid Cantabrian lining up in foreign colours is Natalie Bocock, a coxswain for St Margaret’s who will be in the hunt for medals at Maadi.

Bocock will be at the helm barking the orders for the St Margaret’s under 17, under 16 and under 15 fours as well as

the under 16 quad.

At the South Islands she steered the under 16 four to gold and the under 16 coxed eight to a silver at the South Islands with St Margaret’s College comfortably winning the title of Best School with nine golds in their 11 medal tally.

While Ashburton College flies the Mid Canterbury banner, Mid Canterbury rowers appear in other crews.

Renee Olley, Alice Murdoch, Paige Cook, Emma Dyke, Sarah Dyke and Harriet Sutton all row for Craighead and have been in top form this season.

At the club nationals at Lake Ruataniwha, rowing under the Timaru banner, Emma Dyke, Cook, Olley, Sutton and Murdoch claimed gold in the women’s club coxed eight on Friday.

Dyke, who won silver at the youth Olympics in January, also claimed gold in the women’s senior pairs but settled for silver at the South Island secondary schools in both the under 18 pairs and doubles.

Dyke combines with Murdoch and Olley in the under 18 quad, with Olley and Murdoch teaming up in the under 17 double.

Sutton, Murdoch, Olley and Sarah Dyke were in the under 17 eight that won old while Cook, Sutton and Murdoch are medal chance in the under 17 four after a South Island silver.

Fifty years on court

Murray Amyes has spent 50 years chasing a tennis ball around the courts in Ashburton, and he’s not tired of it yet.

His love for the sport didn’t begin with success or extraordinary talent.

It began as a small boy trying to beat his two older brothers.

“I was a little squirt and they always played above me,” Amyes said.

“When I was about eight I lived about two hundred metres from the grounds, right across the road.

“I’d go over with my brothers and hit up against the board while they played, and when they were done they’d give me a play. We’d be over there all summer long.”

It wasn’t long before he was playing competitively at the grounds.

“My first time playing net was against Murray Isaacs. He had me up for a game, and I told him, ‘I don’t play net’. ‘You do now’, he said. So I did.”

Fast forward 50 years and he’s still swinging, never missing a season in between.

Aymes has always kept busyin his work as a dairy farmer; with his kids, on committees organising tournaments and events.

But no matter how busy he gets he has always made time for tennis.

“Back in the day Saturday was sports day.

“It was what we did, every weekend.

Every Saturday I’d be out on the courts we’d have one and a half courts, so we’d play

one and share one. If we were done by six it was a good day.

People are just busier now; they have to be home by five, they have things to do.”

As well as 50 consecutive seasons of playing tennis, Amyes has more than thirty years serving on boards and committees for tennis clubs around Ashburton, and he’s not planning to take a back seat any time soon.

This weekend he’ll be organising a doubles tournament for 120 players at the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre, and might even find time for a few serves on the court himself.

The courts are the biggest change he has witnessed during his playing days.

Although the upgrade from grass courts at the club in 2001 made the courts better-wearing and more weather-resistant, Amyes misses playing on the grass.

“I loved the grass. It suited my game better: I run for everything.”

Although many of the players Amyes started with still play a social game or two, he’s seen the clubs in Ashburton shrink steadily over the years.

“The young ones all leave when they get to uni age, that’s the problem with places like this.

“You’ll go out and watch them one day and think good-golly these guys are getting good, and the next day they’re gone.

“Off to uni, and sometimes they

don’t come back. ” While the young guns come and go, Amyes has no plans for retirement while he’s still fit and healthy.

“The oldest in the club now would be Phil, who’s in his sixties.

“We play a similar game and he still beats me from time to time, so I can’t sit back just yet.”

Murray Amyes racked up his 50th consecutive year of competitive tennis this season.

England holding the whip hand

By Daniel Richardson Two wickets in as many balls from Stuart Broad during the final session of play yesterday has put England on top after two days of the second cricket test against New Zealand at the Basin Reserve in Wellington.

The tall seamer sent Kiwi opener Hamish Rutherford and Ross Taylor back to the pavilion with consecutive deliveries late in the afternoon as the visitors took hold of the match in the blink of an eye.

New Zealand were in the midst of making a steady start to their first innings following the early departure of Peter Fulton (1)

before Broad worked his magic when the home side had only 48 runs on the board.

Rutherford (23) looked as though he wanted to pick up from where he left off following his debut hundred in the drawn first test in Dunedin last week as he started well.

He took a ball on the body early from Steve Finn, but generally looked assured at the crease before he edged a delivery through to England captain Alastair Cook who made no mistake at first slip.

Former New Zealand skipper Ross Taylor then entered an overcast Basin Reserve to a rousing reception - as he has all summer - but only lasted a solitary

delivery as he had his off stump disturbed by a rampant Broad.

That left New Zealand’s innings in tatters and Cantabrian Dean Brownlie survived the hat-trick ball with a nice clip off his pads through mid-wicket for two runs.

With the light dimming, New Zealand closed the day on 66-3 with Brownlie at the crease on eight alongside the rock-solid Kane Williamson who was unbeaten on 32.

Williamson’s last innings in New Zealand colours at the Basin brought about a fighting century against South Africa last summer and Black Caps coach Mike Hesson would love to see something of a similar ilk from the slightly-built Northern

Districts No 3 bat today. The Kiwis will have to produce an impressive batting display during the weekend to give themselves any chance of staying in the match.

Earlier in the day, England were eventually bowled out for 465 in their first innings just before the tea break.

England began the morning on 267-2 but lost century-maker Jonathan Trott for 121 as he was caught behind from the bowling of Trent Boult without adding to his overnight score.

From there wickets fell regularly but Kevin Pietersen (73) and Matt Prior (82) ensured England put on a more than respectable - APNZ Kane Williamson: pressure on today total.

Mid Canterbury’s Tim Perry ticked two things off his to-do list this week.

He got his first start in Super Rugby at the Blues, and finally got to go hunting.

Perry made his first Super 15 start in the Blues’ 21-28 loss to the Bulls last Sunday.

“I was just getting over the flu, but didn’t want to tell the coaches and miss out on the opportunity,” Perry said.

“I was sick and nervous and didn’t really sleep well but it was good to get out there.

“I played the whole 80 minutes so I was a bit poked at the end of it.

“I went alright but I think I

probably could have done more.”

When speaking about adjusting to life in the big city last month Perry said he was looking forward to his first start but also quipped he missed home, only because he couldn’t go pig hunting.

After making his debut, Perry and the rest of the Blues squad were given a few days off having the bye this weekend.

Perry didn’t have to think twice about what he was going to do and wasted little time in doing it.

“I got home on Wednesday morning and was off hunting by the afternoon.”

After almost three months without a hunt, he returned yesterday afternoon happy enough with “a couple of pigs”

after a night out in the North Canterbury bush.

Fresh home from the hunt at his parents’ farm in Barrhill, where a Blues flag flies proudly in the middle of Crusader country, Perry was at peace.

“It’s good to be back.”

With his hunting habit out of the way and his catch at the butcher’s, his focus will quickly turn back to his profession.

“We were still given a bit of conditioning stuff to do. I told them I was going hunting but they reckoned I still had to do a bit.”

Running up hills chasing pigs didn’t cut it as fitness work but Perry will be primed when he returns to Auckland tomorrow to begin preparing for a possible trip to Sydney to play the

Waratahs, but knows he has a fight on his hands for the starting berth.

“I’ll either be starting or not in the squad.

“We only carry the one loosehead prop and have guys on the bench that can cover both sides so there is plenty of competition.”

Blues coach John Kirwan came under pressure for making six changes to his previously unbeaten side to face the unbeaten Bulls a week out from the bye.

However, The Blues have been a revelation so far, shocking many pundits with their opening two victories, but it was no surprise to members of the team.

“We have copped it a bit but I think we went alright.

“The other franchises have the older experienced guys who can tend to try to do it alone.

We have a young bunch of guys that are really keen and doing things as a team.”

After holding his own against the experienced Bulls forwards, Perry could be in line for another start next weekend.

One thing he was sure of was that his rugby future lies in New Zealand for the foreseeable future.

“After the Super 15 I’ll be back to the Tasman for the ITM Cup and I’ll probably play in New Zealand for a few years yet and see what happens.”

One thing he was unsure about, and almost more concerned with, was when he’ll next be out for a hunt.

Canes get home in another thriller

By Wynne Gray When the desperate rugby and yo-yo scoring stopped, the Hurricanes had the 23-19 victory.

It was a blessing for them but heartbreak for the Highlanders in a match which must have been torture for both coaching crews.

No-one watching this game would have been sure who would claim the result until visiting Argentine referee Francisco Pastrana whistled the end.

Enterprise and endeavour came throughout but those charms were balanced by mistakes and lapses from sides who have deliv-

ered patchy starts to their Super 15 schedules.

Colin Slade missed a handy penalty with five minutes to play which would have given them a late shot at an elusive win.

When they got another awarded a minute later they kicked for touch but botched the lineout take, and the chance of their first tournament win disappeared.

The Hurricanes made the early play with Brad Shields stopped in the corner in a combined tackle, however captain Conrad Smith claimed the recycled ball to surge across in the 8th minute.

Somewhere in the move Highlanders captain Andrew Hore

damaged his ribs and left the field while his opposite, Motu Matu’u, who was an uncertain starter because of the same issue, smashed rivals down with stacks of venom.

There was plenty of recycling and ball movement from the Highlanders but most of their work was sideways instead of directly at their rivals.

When the Hurricanes claimed a fortunate rebound they showed their hosts how to claim dividends.

They switched the ball quickly from one side of the stadium to the other, Victor Vito dummied and made the vital incision to offload to loosehead prop Ben Franks. He

was lurking out on Julian Savea’s left wing and in a remarkable impersonation of his teammate, Franks lowered his shoulder and sent Ben Smith sprawling as he powered to the tryline.

What was becoming a little grim for the Highlanders, changed when they used an attacking scrum to set up Hosea Gear for a run at Beauden Barrett’s defensive channel. It was no contest.

Gear blasted past his All Black team-mate and across the line in Karl Lowe’s covering tackle.

That gave the Highlanders a decent shot of confidence and a lead at the break while the Hurricanes were left to rue both

ends of that spell when Shields and TJ Perenara lost the ball as they dived at the tryline.

Perenara made amends when he gathered a loose ball and beat a four-man posse to the line in a remarkable show of strength, balance and timing.

Veteran Brad Thorn replied with a storming 25m run towards the line until Perenara lowered him.

The momentum had changed once more and Slade grabbed the lead for his side with another penalty.

Neither side knew how to take charge and keep it and that messy production showed why both teams had an unsatisfactory start to this year’s series. - NZH

Handicappers keep Natuzzi safe in Lightning

Wingatui trainer Paul Richards is hoping Natuzzi is the best horse in the listed $50,000 Lightning Handicap at Trentham today.

The only problem is the handicappers have already decided he’s not far off it.

Richards opted to send the Coats Choice 4-year-old to the North Island after his slashing run for second in the White Robe Lodge Handicap at Wingatui on February 2.

“He could have gone around at Cromwell and those other open races that have been around the place, but I thought he deserved a crack at a decent stake,” Richards said.

“But the handicapper hasn’t missed him.

“He’s got the same weight as the horse who won the open sprint in the premier day at Wingatui [Captain Kirk] yet we’ve never

won an open race.”

Natuzzi gained seven rating points after his win at Omakau in January, before gaining a further two points for his second to Ric O’Shea at Wingatui, bringing his rating to 91.

He will carry 57.5kg, just 1.5kg below the top weights of Princess Katie and Galaxy Star, but the inside draw of barrier one will ensure he and jockey Chris Johnson should get an easy trip in behind the leaders before he unleashes his customary sprint.

The drop back in distance from 1600m to 1200m could also work in his favour.

Natuzzi was freshened up for a week after the Wingatui run, as he has a tendency to get slightly keen during his races.

“He won’t be pulling tomorrow because they’ll be going along a bit - he can get home well as long as he relaxes,” Richards said. “He

might end up three back, but it should work out good.”

A bold run for second at Cromwell earned The Bodyguard a space on the float, and he will line up over 2200m in a rating 65 event.

“If we were taking one [to Wellington], we might as well take two, and he did well after the race,” said Richards. “I was really pleased with his run at Cromwell.

He pulled a bit on the slow pace, but I liked the way he got home.”

The draw of 11 does not faze Richards either, as the son of Painted Black should be able to settle midfield.

“He can just sit back and hopefully get over the top of them.”

Regardless of the results, both horses will be back on a Cook Strait ferry crossing on Sunday morning, with Natuzzi’s next target likely to be the $50,000 Easter Cup at Riccarton on April 6. - ODT

international star

For weather recorder Graham Taylor it’s a labour of love, but that passion has him running at number 25 for a weather site internationally. Sue Newman reports.

V

iewed from the Ashburton street, there’s nothing to indicate there’s an internationally recognised weather station running in Graham Taylor’s backyard.

And yet behind his modest bungalow and inside his home, weather data is being collected and recorded and that data has catapulted him way up the weather wall of fame.

He’s currently running in number four slot for hits on a New Zealand weather site and he’s 25th internationally.

Weather recording is a life-long interest for Graham, but one that he’s only been seriously indulging in since he retired. It’s meant he’s become the district’s unofficial “weather man”.

He’s an amateur weather recorder whose hobby has become a passion. It started out as something he did to fill in his retirement hours, to become an activity that has made his the go-to website for anyone wanting information on the district’s weather statistics.

And no-one is more surprised than Graham at the way his hobby has taken off.

“My father used to keep rainfall recordings on his farm at Ashton for the MetService and I was always interested as a child and

wanted to know how many millimetres of rain we’d had.”

That interest didn’t go away during his working years and with retirement looming Graham decided to buy an electronic weather station. He tinkered, pottered and with a lot of trial and error and a bit of help from a software maker, Graham’s Weather Station was born.

It started with just a few recordings, but as he perfected each piece of weather collection software, it slowly built up to become the district’s ultimate answer to minute by minute weather recordings.

Today it’s so good that when the Ashburton District Council’s station went on the blink, it opted to divert its website viewers to Graham’s station rather than spending the money to get it back in business. Environment Canterbury also uses Graham’s data as part of its record keeping.

It might sound like a lot of work, but it’s not, Graham said.

“It does everything automatically and I just have to check it now and again. If I go away I just check up on what it’s doing on my laptop.”

But even then, things can go wrong. Graham’s computer died a few weeks ago and that took the weather station down. Its backed

up, but there were a few anxious moments and unfortunately that means there could be a small gap in the district’s weather records.

“But even with the computer down, I still recorded what I could. I went out in the umbrella to measure the rain and I put that in manually so that’s all there.”

While technology makes accurate weather recording a breeze, Graham still runs manual backups for rain and temperature.

“I’ve got this now so it’s pretty much 100 per cent accurate,” he said.

There’s one piece missing in his recording software, however, and that’s a reliable gauge for logging sunshine hours. He’s working on that one.

Most of his live data is logged minute by minute.

What started out as his hobby website has now become a part of thousands of people’s lives.

“I’ve got people from all over the world who’re looking at it and my software tells me I’ve had visits from people from more than 51 different countries over the past six months. I get emails from people from all over saying they regularly check it out.”

Graham is quick to point out that he’s not a weather forecaster, simply a weather recorder. The

forecasting work is very much the domain of the experts, he said.

He often receives requests asking for specific data for specific months of the year and said where he can he’s happy to oblige.

Keeping weather data is truly a labour of love.

“I get nothing for this other than satisfaction; it’s a bit of a community service I suppose.”

He doesn’t want to count the set-up costs nor the ongoing running and maintenance costs and admits he’s spent up to ensure he has good quality software.

“There’s no point in messing around with a tin-pot one. I’ve had to teach myself everything but there is a support group that helps out with big problems.”

In terms of the website that is a well-used public resource, Graham reckons he’s gone as far as he can in making it data rich and easily navigable.

“Some days I do nothing more with it than come in and make sure everything is running, other days I play around with it a bit.

It’s a bit of a toy I suppose.”

It still surprises him when he hears people talking weather and saying they use Graham’s Weather Station.

“I get a bit of a shock and think, ‘oh, that’s mine’.”

How many chances left for Guildford?

rusaders fans in Mid Canterbury will be divided over Zac Guildford’s fate.

The former All Black winger was given another chance by the New Zealand Rugby Union on Thursday after completing an alcohol rehabilitation programme after yet another violent, drunken escapade.

Crusaders coach Todd Blackadder had earlier declared that Guildford had run out of chances with the franchise after a fight at a Christchurch party in January, but the coach has clearly changed his mind.

Whether he was pressured by the NZRU will probably remain unanswered, but the staunch Crusaders’ coach must have some unease about welcoming the winger back into the training squad on Monday.

The NZRU on Thursday declared that Guildford was dealing with a medical issue and after admitting to his alcohol addiction, among other compulsive tendencies, the rugby bosses felt they would be irresponsible employers if they would have Few other banished him into workplaces the wilderness.

Top performers may be taken back after a rehabilitation programme while others will be dismissed. This inconsistency may seem unfair but it is a choice many employers make.

In the current environment, an in-form Guildford would be a welcome asset to the Crusaders who are short of wingers and desperate for points after two losses in the opening rounds.

If the young man gets picked and scores a hat-trick of tries next week, all will be forgiven. This is the fickle nature our sporting culture.

Accidents waiting to happen E

arlier in the week, a Guardian online poll asked if people had experienced difficulty in accessing medical services.

Now I know physical access wasn’t what the question was about, but it gave me more food for thought.

If you’ve been near the Allenton shops lately, you will have noticed the chaos created by the road works.

Without a doubt it will be causing problems for businesses whose usual clients give up the ghost and shop elsewhere, but what about the health services; the pharmacy and the medical centre?

People can’t just throw their hands in the air and say “I’ll go to another doctor”, or “I’ll pick up my repeat prescriptions from another chemist”.

For the elderly or disabled it’s a nightmare. For those dependent on walker frames, wheelchairs or simply stable, level, ground for maintaining balance, it’s worse.

I know. I had to do it on Thursday.

There was no way we could drive up to the medical centre door to drop off an accident victim who couldn’t walk, without completely breaking the rules and going the wrong way up a narrow lane. So we did.

However the rearrangement of a few road cones, and a sign indicating medical access only would have made the process totally simple, without interrupting the road works in any way, and significantly reducing the chance of further accident or injury for those trying to make their way through the minefield of cones and potholes.

story that’s been running for a few days now; namely, changes in the transport arrangements to get disabled students to and from school.

From what I read, the arrangements have replaced taxis with buses.

This has in turn resulted in disruption to pick-up and drop-off times, questions about the safety of the mechanism used to secure wheelchairs, and students having to be dropped off at some distance from their classrooms.

These factors create difficulty for those with mobility challenges, and anxiety and distress for those whose wellbeing depends on life following a well defined timetable.

The length of time spent on the bus is another issue.

Where are those who plan the road works, who plan the change in transport?

End nigh for Capital + Merchant

By Hamish Fletcher Yesterday was the beginning of the end for the Capital + Merchant Finance prosecutions as one former director of the failed firm was handed an extra year in prison and two others sentenced to home detention and community work.

Former C+M chief executive Owen Tallentire and directors Robert Sutherland and Colin

Ryan pleaded guilty earlier this year to two charges of making an untrue statement in a registered prospectus and one charge of distributing advertisements which included an untrue statement.

The untrue statements were included in two prospectuses one in 2006 and the other in 2007 - and were about relatedparty lending, and loans being actively monitored when this was not happening.

The 2007 prospectus also said that none of C+M’s loans were impaired when a number were.

In the High Court at Auckland yesterday Justice Geoffrey Venning said it should have been clear to the directors that cashflow at the company was unsustainable from the middle of 2007.

Tallentire, 65, is already serving a sentence of five years’ imprisonment for theft by a person in a special relationship

charges in a C+M case brought by the Serious Fraud Office.

His lawyer Nathan Gedye said an uplift in sentence of no more than four to six months was appropriate and would still push Tallentire’s “distant release date” further out. Given he was in prison and unable to work, Tallentire could not offer any reparations, Gedye said.

However, Justice Venning gave Tallentire an extra year in jail - the sentence which Crown law-

yer Nicholas Davidson QC had pushed for.

Justice Venning said Tallentire was in a different position to Ryan and Sutherland and must have known certain statements were false.

While these two directors had an honest belief that the untrue statements were correct, the judge said this belief was not reasonably held and characterised their offending as close to gross-negligence.

Former salesman keeps drivers on right track

By Gabrielle Stuart New driving instructor David Leadley has taken to the roads to help Ashburton drivers hone their techniques.

Mr Leadley finished his driving instructor endorsement in January after four months of training for his NZTA qualification as an instructor, clocking plenty of hours on the road as he travelled to Christchurch for assessments.

“I went through the whole thing. Teaching, car control,

testing from advanced driver assessments right to the basics of talking a driver through the whole process.”

Mr Leadley said driving lessons aren’t just for young people sitting their licence tests. He also plans to teach defensive driving techniques, help people re-sitting their licences due to age restrictions and work with local businesses.

“There’s a lot of scope for driver assessments at firms where they spend a lot of hours on the road. Often insurance can be cheaper if the drivers have done

courses, and I can let the firms know that everything’s up to standard, or where there’s room for improvement.”

The Ashburton man began looking into teaching driving skills about a year ago, after health issues meant he could no longer work full-time in sales and marketing.

“I clocked a lot of driving hours in my role in sales, and always considered myself a good, careful driver. And I feel I relate to people, young people especially.

It just seemed like a good fit. It’s been a nice change of pace.”

f you had invested in McDonald’s 10 years ago you’d be patting yourself on your well rounded tummy.

The shares have risen from around $US$13 in 2003 to $US$97 today. A 747 per cent return over 10 years is quite nice.

McDonald’s is the largest and most well recognised fast food franchiser in the world.

Another that you may not have heard of is Yum Brands, however you will know the major brands it owns; Kentucky Fried Chicken, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell.

Both McDonald’s and Yum Brands are stock exchange listed and are headquartered in the United States. In fact Yum Brands is based in Louisville, Kentucky – the home of Kentucky Fried and Colonel Sanders.

The Colonel is a man of legend and his is an interesting story. He first started cooking what he called “home meal replacement” way back in 1930 at a service station he operated in Corbin, Kentucky. His target market was busy, time-strapped families, and he called his food “Sunday Dinner, Seven Days a Week”.

In 1935 he was made a Colonel of Kentucky for his contribution to the state’s cuisine and in 1955 he started franchising the business, increasing franchises to over 600 within just 10 years.

PepsiCo bought the company in 1986 and then sold off their combined restaurant assets KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell as Tricon Global Restaurants in 1997, before changing name to Yum Brands in 2002.

If you ever wondered why you can’t buy a Coke at KFC or Pizza Hut, it’s because PepsiCo has a lifetime supply contract with the majority of Yum Brands’ franchises.

You’d be forgiven for thinking that Yum would be the larger of the two companies, and so it is, based purely on the number of restaurants they operate.

Yum has 38,000 whereas McDonald’s ‘only’ has 34,000 restaurants.

But Yum’s market capitalisation is around $US$30 billion and in 2011 they pulled in revenue of $US12 billion. McDonald’s on the other hand is worth around $US97 billion and reported global revenue in 2012 of $US27 billion.

Whilst Yum is smaller than McDonald’s in financial terms, it’s arguably a more diverse company, not only in its businesses and product range, but also geographically.

Some 14,000 of McDonald’s restaurants are located within the United States, whereas Yum Brands has over 4000 restaurants in China alone and these contribute to nearly half of Yum’s total operating profit.

The key here is that the vast majority of the Chinese restaurants are not franchises, but are owned and operated directly by Yum. Within New Zealand, Restaurant Brands owns the local KFC and Pizza Hut restaurants which were spun out of PepsiCo in 1997.

Restaurant Brands also owns Starbucks New Zealand restaurants.

Restaurant Brands has made a dramatic turnaround from its post Global Financial Crisis low of 57c and now sits around $2.80 just five years later. And then of course there is Burger Fuel which listed at one dollar in 2007 and has since climbed to around $1.70 today.

There are plenty of options for investors to consider in the fast food business, but your decision to invest should never be a fast one. It’s important to understand not only the profitability of each, but also their model of operation and growth potential.

Hopefully I’ve given you a little something to chew over.

New style of papacy: Pope pays hotel bill On his first day as shepherd of the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics, Pope Francis picked up his luggage at a Vatican hotel, personally thanked each member of the staff and even paid his own bill.

Then, at his first Mass, he delivered a short, unscripted homily — in Italian, not the Latin of his predecessor — holding the cardinals who elected him responsible for keeping the church strong.

Pope for barely 12 hours, Francis brushed off years of tradition and formality with a remarkable break in style that sent a clear message that his papacy is poised to reject many of the trappings enjoyed by now-retired Benedict XVI. That was hardly out of character for Francis. For years, as Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the Argentine pastor took the bus to work, kissed the feet of Aids patients and prayed with former prostitutes, eschewing the luxurious residence that would have been his due as archbishop of Buenos Aires.

But now he is pope — the first from the New World and the first Jesuit — and his style both personal and liturgical is in a global spotlight.

On his first day, he couldn’t have signalled a greater contrast to Benedict, the German academic who was meek and generous in person but formal and traditional in public.

The differences played out yesterday in the Sistine Chapel as the 76-year-old Francis celebrated his first public Mass as pope.

Whereas Benedict read a three-page discourse in Latin, Francis had a far simpler message. Speaking off-the-cuff for 10 minutes in easy Italian, he said all Catholics must “build” the church and “walk” with the faith.

He urged priests to build their churches on solid foundations, warning: “What happens when children build sand castles on the beach? It all comes down.”

“If we don’t proclaim Jesus, we become a pitiful NGO, not the bride of the Lord,” he said.

“When we walk without the cross, and when we preach about Christ without the cross, we are not disciples of the Lord. We are mundane. We are bishops, priests, cardinals, popes, but we are not disciples of the Lord.”

China names new premier China has for mally installed the Communist Party’s second-ranked leader, Li Keqiang, as premier, as a once-a-decade leadership transition nears its well-ordered conclusion.

The largely powerless legislature overwhelmingly selected Li yesterday, a day after legislators appointed Li Keqiang party chief Xi Jinping to the ceremonial state presidency.

The appointments were foreordained after Xi and Li ascended to the leadership’s top spots at a party congress in November.

Since then, they have signalled that they intend to combat widespread official corruption, try to lessen a wide income gap and repair the severely polluted environment — issues that are driving public discontent.

The legislature’s annual session and the political transition reach their end this weekend with the appointment of Cabinet officials to manage the economy, foreign affairs and an increasingly fractious society.

The new style was evident even in Francis’ wardrobe. Rather than wear the new golden pectoral cross he was offered after his election, he kept the simple crucifix of his days as bishop. He also turned down the red velvet cape that Benedict wore when he was presented to the world for the first time in 2005, choosing the simple white cassock of the papacy instead.

“It seems to me what is certain is it’s a great change of style, which for us isn’t a small thing,” Sergio Rubin, Francis’ authorised biographer, told The Associated Press.

Rubin said the new pope “believes the church has to go into the streets” and be one with the people it serves and not impose its message on a society that often doesn’t want to hear it.

For this reason, as Cardinal Bergoglio,

“he built altars and tents in the squares of Buenos Aires, and held Masses with former prostitutes and homeless people in the street,” Rubin said. “He did this to express the closeness of the church to those who are suffering.”

Rubin said he expected to see more changes — even substantive ones — once Francis gets his footing.

“I think the categories of progressive and conservative are insufficient,” Rubin said. “Pope Francis is someone with a great mental openness to enter into dialogue. He is very understanding of different situations. He doesn’t like to impose.”

And he has a sense of humour.

During dinner after his election, the cardinals toasted him. Then he toasted them and said, “May God forgive you for what you’ve done.”

Protesters, police clash in Bahrain Thousands of anti-government protesters threw firebombs and stones at riot police and burned tyres in Bahrain on the second anniversary of the intervention by a Saudi-led force in the Gulf island’s crisis.

The clashes were the worst in several weeks and served a reminder that there are elements of the opposition that have yet to buy into slow-moving talks with government officials.

Police fired stun grenades at the demonstrators during the clashes in the mainly Shiite neighbourhoods surrounding the capital, Manama.

Starting early in the morning, the mostly young demonstrators blocked roads leading into scores of Shiite villages to prevent security forces from entering.

Bahrain’s Shiite majority is seeking a greater political voice in the strategic Sunni-ruled kingdom, which is home to the US Navy’s 5th Fleet.

The main Shiite opposition group, Al Wefaq, said 35 protesters were wounded in the clashes, including three critically, in what it called a “systematic policy carried out under high, official orders to use violence against peaceful

It also accused police of using live ammunition and bird shot against some protesters.

Physicists find Higgs boson It helps solve one of the most fundamental riddles of the universe: how the Big Bang created something out of nothing 13.7 billion years ago.

In what could go down as one of the great Eureka! moments in physics — and win somebody the Nobel Prize — scientists said that after a half-century quest, they are confident they have found a Higgs boson, the elusive subatomic speck sometimes called the “God particle.”

The existence of the particle was theorized in 1964 by the British physicist Peter Higgs to explain why matter has mass.

Scientists believe the particle acts like molasses or snow: When other tiny basic building blocks pass through it, they stick together, slow down and form atoms.

Death row conviction overturned A federal appeals court has thrown out the convictions of a woman sentenced to death in the notorious 1989 killing of her 4-year-old son, ruling that the case was tainted by a detective with a history of lying under oath.

The ruling marked a surprising turn in a case that made national headlines with the brazen and gruesome nature of the crime. Prosecutors said Debra Jean Milke dressed up her son Christopher in his favourite outfit and told him he was going to see Santa Claus at a mall during the holidays.

A three-judge panel of the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals ruled the prosecution failed to disclose information about a history of

misconduct by a detective who testified that Milke confessed to plotting her son’s murder.

Prosecutors are required to provide a defendant’s lawyers with material that might support a not guilty verdict, including material that could undermine the credibility of a prosecution witness.

There was no other witness or recording of the purported confession by Milke, who has proclaimed her innocence.

Get ready FOR winter

A

s one tremendously hot season comes to an end, the cooler nights and morning dews signal autumn is here.

Now is the time to replenish garden beds and pots and plant vegetables, seeds and herbs to enjoy in autumn and winter.

Get started by removing any crops that have matured and been harvested.

Cut the plants into small pieces and add them to the compost bin.

Then replenish the soil with sheep pellets, NPK or blood and bone, plus some good organic compost. Blend all this together thoroughly and water in well to incorporate all the goodies into the soil.

Summer crops will have sucked valuable nutrients from the soil so it’s essential to replenish the soil before planting autumn and winter crops.

Some crops may still be producing good amounts of food. Just plant around them because a punnet or two of salad veges can easily fit under rows of beans and tomatoes.

In pots and containers, remove summer crops and add vegetable mix, or mix in sheep pellets and organic compost to give the tired summer soil a boost.

Some granular soil wetter will really help plants growing in pots to make the most of water, so sprinkle that in too. Brighten up those vege pots with winterflowering pansies and violas.

These are not just pretty but edible. The main vege seeds to sow now are quick-growing crops such as lettuce, spinach, silverbeet, mizuna, rocket and bok choy. All the other

autumn crops are best planted as seedlings now to save on growing time. Sow seeds into trays of seed-raising mix, keep soil moist and transplant seedlings once they are about finger length.

It’s time to save seeds of summer crops to sow next spring.

Crops such as tomatoes, beans, peas, pumpkins, lettuce and rocket seed readily. Collect, dry and store in labelled envelopes.

If you enjoy soups in winter, grow crops that suit the purpose, perhaps planting a soup bed.

All these crops, if planted

soon, will be ready to harvest over winter and be turned into delicious soups: beetroot, broccoli, carrots, celery, cabbage, cauliflower, silverbeet, spinach, spring onions, coriander, parsley, mint, thyme and rosemary.

If you are only a spring and summer gardener, sow a green manure crop such as lupins or mustard, and leave the garden alone until next spring.

As temperatures cool slugs and snails will be back on the hunt for fresh new crops, either keep crops covered with nets or cloches or sprinkle slug bait around to send them packing.

We have a three-year-old feijoa tree and would like to transfer it to another part in our garden. Can you tell us will the tree transplant? Will we have to prune it back to move it? When will be the best time to move it?

es it is fine to move your feijoa tree and it should transplant very well. The best time to do this is during winter once it has stopped active growth – this should be around late May to August.

It is a good idea to prune the tree back before you move it and when transplanting be sure to take as much of the root as possible.

Feijoas grow in most soils so long as there is good drainage; check the new site has this and when planting dig in lots of compost. Do not apply fertiliser yet as the tree needs time to re-establish its root system.

Finally, add a thick layer of mulch on the ground around the base of the tree to help protect shallow roots and suppress weeds.

If it is a seedling tree or not a wellknown variety, it might be worth considering buying a new plant of a named variety.

With seedling trees, the size of tree, timing of fruiting or even the size of fruit the tree produces can be unknown.

By choosing a grafted or cutting tree means it is a clone of a named variety and this guarantees it to be true to type as on the label eg: timing and size of fruiting etc.
