Truckie blames sun strike for train crash The truck driver who drove into the path of an oncoming train in May has claimed sun strike as the cause of the smash. Keith Raymond Skinner pleaded guilty to careless driving in the Ashburton District Court yesterday in front of Justices of the Peace Eric Weir and Steve Wise. Skinner, driving an empty Verkerks truck and trailer unit, heading east crossed the uncontrolled Northpark Road railway crossing shortly after 9am on May 29 – unaware of the southbound train bearing down on him. By the time he heard the train it was too late; it ploughed into the truck causing extensive damage to both the train engine and the semitrailer unit. Neither driver was injured. “I’m sorry,” Skinner told the court. “It wasn’t on purpose – I couldn’t see the train because of the sun strike. “The first thing I knew about the train was when I heard it about two seconds before it hit me.” Skinner was adjourned to undertake restorative justice and has until November 26 to complete the pro-

cess, when he will return to court for sentencing. The controversial crossing has already cost a life – David Nigel Dunham was killed there on March 22, 2002. At his inquest the coroner, the late Laurence Cooney, called for an urgent inquiry into the Northpark Road crossing, saying safety measures needed urgent consideration. In addition, crashes were recorded at the crossing in 1982 and 1990, and according to neighbours there have been many close calls. In 2002 Mr Cooney requested barrier arms and warning bells be installed at the intersection. Following the collision in May, a Kiwirail spokesperson said the view of the approaching train would have been clear. In July the Ashburton District Council took matters into its own hands, removing the existing giveway sign, and replacing it with a compulsory stop sign. However, Kiwirail ordered its removal, saying it was planning to upgrade the Northpark railway crossing before June next year with the installation of new flashing lights and bells.

Five things that may interest you

A cat has been saved in an unusual procedure, using blood from a dog. Tauranga woman Kim Edwards said her cat Rory had been rushed to Tauranga Vets after she heard awful howls. Vets were 95 per cent sure Rory had eaten rat poison and was in a bad way. In a last ditch effort to save Rory’s life, Ms Edwards was given two options one of which was to do a blood transfusion from another cat. The other option was to do a blood transfusion with a dog. In the unusual procedure a neighbour’s labrador was rushed to the vet clinic. Ms Edwards said the whole thing was very dramatic.

Taggers surrender

A 27-year-old Auckland man was last night charged over the tagging of Christchurch’s CTV Building site. The man, who will appear in an Auckland court this week, had been in Christchurch visiting mates on August 3 when he and two others were allegedly caught defacing the memorial site. On Friday, the 27-year-old walked in to Henderson police station to talk about his alleged involvement. A few hours later, a 21-year-old handed himself in at Christchurch central police station over the same incident.

Rugby considers move to stadium BY SUE NEWMAN

SUE.N@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

Rugby could be the first sporting code to establish its playing base in the grounds of the EA Networks Centre. There will be large grassed areas around the new sports complex available for use by a range of sporting codes in the future. And that is creating a huge opportunity, not just for rugby but for a wide range of sports said Mid Canterbury Rugby Union chief executive Ian Patterson. The union is in the final stages of its 20 year lease of the Ashburton A&P Association grounds and is now looking at all options for its future, he said. “Our lease is up in 2018 and clearly one of the big issues for the town is getting a premium playing surface where we can attract big games.” The main ground at the showgrounds was good for squad training and club matches, but the district lacked a surface that would meet the standards required for top level games, Mr Patterson said. “The concept around the new facility gives us an opportunity to have a new surface created, but this is just one option, we’ve made no decisions.” While it is still looking at future playing field options, the union is committed to relocating its administrative base to Sports House in the stadium complex. This is multi-user facility which will allow a range of sporting codes to share office space and administrative services. With its showground’s lease running down, the union had to make decisions and moving forward, he said. “It’s four years out and we want where ever we’re going to, to be ready and in place well before then.” The rugby union might be looking at a new future, but the Ashburton A&P Association is

hoping its key tenant opts to stay post 2018. Association chair David Bennett said he didn’t want to speculate on what the union might do in the future. “I’d encourage them to stay because we’ve got a great facility but if they decide to move this would be their choice, not ours. We want them to stay; we’d love them to stay,” he said. Mr Bennett said the association did everything it could to keep the oval in good playing condition. “We’ve got good facilities, even though our grandstand is out of action at the moment. We’re trying to do things right to get our building fixed and our aim is to reinstate it.”

What are the long-term plans for the EA Networks Centre? Provision is made to the north and west of the EA Networks Centre for a wide range of outdoor sports to establish a new base close to the complex. In the centre’s long term master plan sites have already been tagged for outdoor bowls and a range of playing fields that could include rugby, hockey or football. There is also sufficient room in the grounds to build a cricket

oval. To the east of the core facility, the indoor sports stadium and aquatic centre, provision has been made for a velodrome that would be linked to the main stadium by a covered walkway. Land between the stadium between River Terrace and Smallbone Drive is being retained for passive recreation. The council owns about 15 hectares of land around the stadium.

Some of this has always been in its ownership but the remainder, in two blocks, previously belonged to the late Ray Copland and the Crown. Securing additional land to futureproof the stadium site by providing room for the stadium to be extended and for a variety of outdoor sports to become part of the sports hub, was critical for the council when it signed off the project.

■ DISTRICT COURT

Excuses, excuses Driving a mate to work, taking one for the team, going to get milk and picking up fish and chips were among the reasons unlicensed drivers gave for being behind the wheel, during their appearances in the Ashburton District Court yesterday. But the most unlikely excuse Justices’ of the Peace Eric Weir and Steve Wise heard was probably that delivered by recidivist forbidden driver Wayne Douglas Witehira, 25, who faced three charges: “I know I’m not allowed to drive – but it’s my hobby – I like driving,” he said. Witehira was disqualified from driving for six months, fined $300 and ordered to pay court costs.

qualified for six months, fined $200 and ordered to pay court costs.

Bronson Tamati Cairns, charged with driving while forbidden, had blown the opportunity to obtain a licence – he was convicted, fined $300 and ordered to pay court costs.

Patrick Bruce Keen, charged with driving while forbidden, failed to show up and his case was set down for formal proof on September 17.

Mark Thomas McKersey, charged with driving while prohibited, will also pay through his pocket to the tune of $400 plus court costs, for failing to show up with his licence within the agreed upon timeframe. Likewise, driving while forbidden cost Nathan Edward King – he was convicted, disqualified from driving for three months, fined $200 and ordered to pay court costs. Christopher Allan Esmy Quinton was dealt a similar fate – he was convicted of driving while forbidden, dis-

Christopher Jon Tait failed to produce his driver’s licence before yesterday’s date; he was convicted on his earlier guilty plea, fined $300 and ordered to pay court costs. Meanwhile, unlicensed driver Troy Colin Clark obtained his licence and was convicted and discharged without penalty. Leslie John Harman had successfully completed the requirements of a restorative justice sentence and had a charge of careless driving withdrawn.

Lance James Kay, charged with driving while forbidden, has until October 5 to turn up at court with his driver’s licence, and Temana Rueben must have a licence by his next court date on October 15. The justices acknowledged that forbidden driver Aimee Maree McCarthy had attempted to obtain a driver’s licence – and granted her another month to try again. Shaydon Mark Speir must also produce his driver’s licence when he returns to court next month, to avoid sentence on a driving while forbidden charge.

“They really surprised me with how they went, last year I went along to see if it was worth entering and decided it would be worth having a go,” Mr Butler said. While the winning team can pat themselves on the back for their success, during the next fortnight they will be honing their programming skills to ensure there are no malfunctions when they compete in the national competition in Auckland. Mr Butler said he would be heading up on September 7 with the trio, who will look to take out the national competition and head to Australia.

Tail breaking ‘defies logic’ BY MICHELLE NELSON MICHELLE.N@THEGUARDIAN.CO.AN

Dairy industry spokespeople have joined forces to condemn animal cruelty following this week’s conviction of an Ashburton herd manager. Kevin Craig Smith pleaded guilty to breaking the tails of 154 cows, some more than once, in the Ashburton District Court on Monday. He will be sentenced on October 14. Yesterday Federated Farmers, DairyNZ and the New Zealand Veterinary Association spoke

out. “I have no idea why someone working on a dairy farm would believe that breaking tails makes cows easier to work with,” Federated Farmers dairy chairperson Willy Leferink said. “We’ve seen several instances of this unacceptable practice as of late and it defies logic and stockmanship. “First, it causes the animal pain and distress meaning they are not going to be a peak performer. “Secondly, cows are not clueless. They will become leery of staff making them much harder

to handle and to work with. “If you are hot-headed and prone to lashing out, can I suggest the dairy industry is not the career for you. “All staff need education on how to handle animals because animal abuse is unacceptable. “Given there are stiff penalties we hope the court will send a deterring message when sentencing comes in October.” DairyNZ’s team leader for animal husbandry and welfare, Nita Harding, said the key to managing cows is to work with them, not against them.

“Many procedures on farm are routine and cows, being creatures of habit, will easily comply if they are treated well. “It’s all about understanding how a cow interprets the world around her and then managing her appropriately,” Ms Harding said. “This ultimately leads to more content cows, happier staff and higher milk production.” The New Zealand Veterinary Association (NZVA) Dairy Cattle Society president, Dr. Neil MacPherson, believes banning

this person from working with animals would send a strong message to those who treat animals cruelly. DairyNZ has an early response service, which involves Federated Farmers, offering confidential support where animal welfare is at stake, by calling on 0800 4 324 7969. Federated Farmers has recently sent members an important advisory about employer rights in animal welfare cases. Log into fedfarm.org.nz or call 0800 327 646 to obtain a copy.

Rakaia River Terrace Walkway transformed BY MYLES HUME

MYLES.H@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

The Rakaia River Terrace Walkway has been through a rapid evolution since the days of being a bulldozed track along the river bank. An almost $40,000 development last week of the walking and biking trail has seen what was a grass and sand-based track transformed into a solid stone and clay surface which Rakaia Community Association chairman Neil Pluck says has become walkable for everyone. “The vision of when we first made this track was for mothers to be walking with their prams down here, this means everyone can use it now,” he said. The 4km track has now established its place as an attraction for Rakaia, stretching from Salmon Tales in the township, along the banks of the Rakaia River to Wolseley Road. It is a far cry from the trail’s inception, when they were felling trees in the area about five years ago, and was often regarded as too uneven by elderly strollers in the area. Mr Pluck said its development caught the attention of

A year of frustration, fury BY MYLES HUME

left wondering why? “If the ministry turns around and says ‘on balance the decision we have made is to start a new system in October, thank you very much for your work’, I think we would invest extra time and get a better solution,” Mr McMillan said. Mr McMillan’s biggest fear is that Novopay owners Talent2 will walk away from the contract after posting a $20 million deficit last year. “That’s $385,000 a week you’re losing, no commercial firm can afford to do that.” Today, Mr McMillan, along with other principals, say the errors have subsided but there are numerous outstanding is-

MYLES.H@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

It is a year since the birth of the Novopay debacle, and Ashburton College principal Grant McMillan insists schools would rather take on additional work to set up a new payroll system than continue “to flog a dead horse”. It’s an admission born from the fatigue, frustration and fury that the new teacher payroll system has fuelled for a year to the day yesterday, as it still continues to mess with the pay of school staff. News came yesterday another $11 million would be pumped into “fixing the bugs”, but the Ashburton College principal is

sues from last year and he is nervous about having to submit complex end of year data come October. “An example we have used before is when they took $40,000 out of our operations grant, we have got $26,000 of that back but there’s still another $14,000 to come back ... “I certainly hope we get that back - we have to.” Mr McMillan said his staff had racked up about $12,000 in additional work last year, with accountant Andrea Matthews going from seven hours a week to 25, dealing with pay error after pay error. He said he had heard of staff at smaller schools leaving be-

cause of stress, and even the Ministry of Education had head-hunted some school office staff to work in the Novopay headquarters. “What a mixed blessing that would be,” Mr McMillan joked. The Guardian even found some staff were embarrassed to approach their principals, asking them for money to tide them over until their pay was sorted. All this, caused by what Mr McMillan describes as a ministry official “lacking moral courage” to say Novopay was never ready to go back in August last year. “We’ve told our admin staff they are in it for the long haul.”

New Christmas decorations on their way BY SUE NEWMAN

SUE.N@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

After years of playing Christmas Grinch, Ashburton is about to show a little festive spirit to the rest of the world. For several years the town’s name has been up in lights for all the wrong reason when the festive season arrived – while other towns and cities lit up and shone, Ashburton’s civic Christmas decorations were at best tatty. The Ashburton District Council’s town centre sub committee decided that had to change. It partnered with EA Networks and with a bit of help from the Ashburton Trust has splashed out and ordered new decorations that are more about Christmas than cringe. Yesterday the council’s town centre sub committee signed off on a deal that will see East Street treated to a swanky festive overhaul. Gone will be the faded angels and spiritless Christmas trees

and in their place there will be garlands, bows and wreaths, interspersed with sparkling stars. Three large town centre cedar trees are to be light up for the summer. An attempt by council staff to retain the old and mingle it with the new didn’t gain any traction with district councillors. “I’m of the school of thought that says less is more. Let’s do what we do very well rather than try to do too much,” said councillor Robin Kilworth Darryl Nelson agreed saying he didn’t want a “slather of stuff ” strung around town.

And that meant, Donna Favel said, the angels would have to be sent out of town, preferably migrating to Allenton and Tinwald. White Island erupts again BY BRENDAN MANNING

Peter St

In brief

Civil Defence will monitor White Island (Whakari) following a small eruption which could be part of a sequence leading to a bigger event. Following yesterday morning’s blast, sightseers were warned another eruption could occur “at any time with little or no warning”. The alert status remained at level 2, and the Aviation Colour Code had been lowered from red to orange, Bay of Plenty Civil Defence Emergency Management Group said.

Yesterday’s small eruption occurred at 10.23am, lasted for about 10 minutes and produced mostly steam. It was visible from the Bay of Plenty coast, with a plume rising to about 4km above sea level before slowly dispersing, said Emergency Management Group spokesman Clinton Naude. Activity had since returned to normal. “The eruption originated in the active crater area that has been experiencing very small mud eruptions in recent weeks. “The eruption threw mud and rocks a short distance

from the source, and produced large volumes of white steam.” Weather radar observations showed a small proportion of volcanic ash was carried with the steam, Mr Naude said. White Island has been experiencing low-level activity since last August, and yesterday’s eruption came as no surprise. Vulcanologist observed a short period of strong volcanic tremors on Monday morning, however it was unclear if it was related to yesterday’s eruption. -APNZ

Wilson, 66, was released on parole in August last year after spending 18 years in prison for violent sexual offending against women and children, stupefying adults and bestiality. An extended supervision order placing constraints on Wilson’s freedom will continue for 10 years after the end of his sentence in 2015. -APNZ

Stalker on bail A 21-year-old man accused of using Facebook to contact young girls has been remanded on bail and banned from using the internet. Brandyn Stewart appeared in the Hutt Valley District Court yesterday on charges in relation to allegations of blackmail, contacting for sex with a person under 18 years and attempting to contact for sex with someone under 18 years. -APNZ

■ IRIS PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY AWARDS

Photographers shine in national competition By GaBrielle Stuart gabrielle.s@theguardian.co.nz

From stoic to ecstatic, there was a mixed bag of reactions from local photographers who placed in the 2013 national Iris Professional Photography awards last week. It’s the eighth year that Methven photographer Bill Irwin has entered the awards, and he took his three bronze placings with a grain of salt. “I have a love/hate relationship with these sorts of things. At the end of the day, like all art, it’s subjective. It is really just up to what strikes the judges on the day.” Pragmatic as he was, he admitted it was satisfying to place in the prestigious national awards. “To achieve any awards means that a photographer’s images

have had enough impact to be noticed. “I like the process of selecting my entries because it makes me think about what I have worked on in the previous year, but I don’t get too worried about whether the judges agree with me or not!” For Ashburton photographer Rebecca Watson, who had two images receive bronze awards, the experience was different. After 10 years as a photographer, the Iris awards this year was the first photography competition she had ever entered,

and even sending her pictures in was a huge step. “It was a nerve-racking experience having my photographs critiqued and judged by photographers who I have looked up to and admired.” Of the four photographs she entered even those that didn’t place were awarded High Professional Standard rankings, a result that has left her buzzing. The Iris awards are run by the NZ Institute of Professional Photography, and have been held annually for more than 30 years.

■ REHEARSALS UNDER WAY

NASDA students to bring Hair here By SuSan SandyS

susan.s@theguardian.co.nz

National Academy of Singing and Dramatic Art (NASDA) students are being “responsive and creative” as they rehearse for their upcoming production of Hair. That is according to the director Stephen Robertson, who will

be bringing his cast to Ashburton in a little over two weeks. The CPIT-based academy has been staging its annual show at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre since 2011 when earthquakes ruined its usual city venues. Mr Robertson said students were working hard in rehearsals in Christchurch at the moment

and he was impressed with their talents. “Rehearsals are going well with the cast being very responsive and creative. This is a different process from other musical theatre productions, with the show’s structure being shaped by a lot of improvisation and experimentation,” Mr Robertson said.

Among the cast of about 40 is former Ashburton College student Jane Leonard. She is playing the role of activist hippy Sheila Franklin. “It is a demanding role which showcases her acting, singing and dancing ability,” Mr Robertson said. Other roles include Chris McRae as Claude, Nathan Munn

By Emma CroppEr Ashburton College is showcasing its cultural side as arts and languages week takes over the school. A music evening, art competition, international food day, foreign films and the cast from Scared Scriptless are all on the agenda for the week. Ashburton College arts coordinator Lyndal Lane said it will be an “action-packed week”. Kicking-off on Monday night, over 140 students took to the stage in the music evening, including soloists, instru-

mentalists, bands and the popular house fest competition. “The standard was incredible”, Ms Lane said. “It takes a lot of guts to get up on stage.” Hosts for the sell-out audience were the school’s head girl and boy, Finau Fakapelea and Kane Olsen. Thirty-six items made it through the audition process to perform to a sell-out audience. As well as 100 more students involved in the house fest competition, which Ms Lane said brought out some “humorous” performances. Green house took out the top

honours performing a song by Queen. Ms Lane said Green house had their own Freddie Mercury and included everyone on stage as well as wearing costumes from the costume shop. “What was great was they had so many of their house members on stage and passed the microphone around,” Ms Lane said. The audiences were also treated to songs from the Broadway shows Wicked, The Sound of Music and original songs from the students. Students would also be sub-

mitting entries for Tuesday’s art exhibition that would be on display at the College’s open night. The German and Japanese class would be heading off to watch foreign films at the Regent Cinema. Friday is International Food Day. Turkish, Thai, Japanese, Chinese and Indian will be on sale for under two dollars while the student blues bands and jazz bands play. Also, Christchurch’s Court Theatre Scared Scriptless cast will be putting on a performance.

as Berger, Rosanna Hewson as Crissy and Ben Freeth as Woof. Cast members and their entourage will arrive in Ashburton from September 6 for setting up the stage and rehearsals. The show set and costumes are currently being constructed in the city. Hair will stage from September 13 to 15.

For $25 individuals or groups can also set up their own table and sell goods. This year’s event will be held in the Sports Hall on September 8 from 11am until 2pm. People with goods to donate should contact Val, 308-2527 or Carolyn, 308-3435.

A search for the missing yacht Nina will be extended today to a wider area of the Tasman Sea near Norfolk Island, after a second day of searching found nothing. A Gisborne-based Kiwi Air plane on Monday began a new search for the 85-year-old American vessel after an orange object, believed to be the liferaft was spotted in a high-resolution satellite image. Search liaison John Funnell last night confirmed a search of the “higher probability area” of 65 by 185 km, which had been identified by the Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand, was completed yesterday. “Nothing of any interest was found,” he said. A wider search area had been outlined for today, but poor weather was expected to delay the morning start, Mr Funnell said. The Nina left the Bay of Islands on May 29 and was headed for Newcastle, Australia. Neither the yacht nor the seven people on board have been seen or heard from since June 4. A search was launched on June 25 but was called off on July 4. The yacht is owned by professional captain David Dyche III, 58, and his wife, Rosemary, 60. They were on board with son David Dyche jnr, 17, and fellow Americans Evi Nemeth, 73, Kyle Jackson, 27, and 18-yearold Danielle Wright. Also on board was Briton Matthew Wootton, 35. Family and friends of those on board have refused to give up hope, and have been fundraising to pay for private searches to continue. Mr Funnell said a decision would be made about further searching at the close of play tomorrow. “At this stage, they [the families] have enough funding for another day of searching.” - APNZ

OUR VIEW

Children’s safety comes first Coen Lammers EDITOR

M

embers of Parliament are pushing for teachers to be named once they have been found guilty of misconduct by the New Zealand Teachers Council’s disciplinary committee. A former Ashburton College teacher could be one of the first to be named if the council changes its suppression orders. The teacher is being investigated for inappropriate behaviour which forced him to resign in May. The teachers council’s complaints assessment committee is deciding whether the teacher will have to face the disciplinary committee, which is expected to take two months. By that time, the council will have met to consider the recommendation by Parliament’s select committee which found that the current suppression rules are not in accordance with the Education Act. The overhaul of suppression rules is long overdue as disgraced teachers avoid any further scrutiny from their peers and the public. The teachers council says its policy is in place to protect the affected students, which can be a valid argument, but can easily be construed as a cover-up. The secrecy creates the danger that some teachers who have displayed inappropriate behaviour can slip back into the school system or find other employment involving children. This was particularly evident in the Ashburton case where the former teacher ended up as a ski instructor on Mt Hutt, ironically dealing with many of his former pupils. The teachers council is right to make the children’s interests their top priority, but sharing more information about badly behaved teachers will possibly avoid other children falling victim to the same person. The much-publicised case of James Parker, considered New Zealand’s worst convicted child abuser, highlighted how a reluctance to share information or acting on information can have devastating consequences. The teachers council may not be dealing this kind of horrific criminal behaviour, but more transparency on their part would boost the public confidence in those who we entrust our children to.

YOUR VIEW Votes I note that in the past couple of days’ publications you have had readers asking for the names of councillors and how they voted in regards to the art gallery/ museum. I kept the paper clipping which was in your publication at the time of the vote as I wanted to make sure when the next elections rolled around that I voted for councillors that actually listened to the community. Below are a list of the councillors and mayor at the time and which way they voted, I want this published so that people in the community today have the chance to make an informed decision on who they want to run the local council for the next few years. Councillors who voted YES for the art gallery/museum were: Don McLeod (current-

ly also going for mayor), Jac Sparks, Alan Totty, Darryl Nelson, Neil Brown, Jim Burgess and John Leadley. Councillors who voted NO for the art gallery/museum were: Stuart Wilson, Peter Reveley, Donna Faval, Martin Nordqvist. And our current mayor Angus McKay also voted NO. Unfortunately because of where I reside, I am unable to vote for anyone but the mayor as there were only enough people to fill vacant seats in my ward, but I hope this helps others in our community when it comes to their voting choices. eople are entitled to their own opinions. That is never an issue, however they are not entitled to their own facts. I refer to the new Art Gallery and Museum project and also the letter in your paper last week from Edward Gates. Interestingly he criticises the Guardian for allowing a voice to the “past manager of Ashburton District Council”. If he is referring to myself, I am still employed as the chief executive of the council – fact. The background to the decision on the new art gallery and museum facility has been documented in the Guardian a number of times over the recent years. A brief recap: – The current facility was considered inadequate in 1993 – The inadequacy was recognised by successive councils with various options looked at

Mid Canterbury’s school children are enthusiastic about the art gallery/museum (artist’s impression above) and sports stadium.

Brian Lester

FROM YOUR COUNCIL

– We have growing museum and art collections, as well as the need to store and have available district archives (not just council archives) – The current concept was developed and subject to stand- alone community consultation in 2007. This resulted in 89 submissions with 67 supporting the proposal, 13 supporting the new building but on a different site, and nine opposed to the new building – The current building under construction is consistent with that consulted on, with some changes made after

meetings with the neighbours – Further consultation was enabled through the 2008, 2010, and 2011 draft annual plans and the 2009-10 community plan, and the publicly notified resource consent application Mr Gates referred to the public rally. Again, and as pointed out by Mr Opthoog in his letter to the Guardian the previous week, this rally was some four months after the contract for construction had been let. These are the facts. The significant consultation undertaken has been acknowledged by the chair of the Ashburton Citizens Association. While there are some in the community who do not support such projects, that is perfectly under-

standable and I would suspect normal for any large project. Council is elected to make such decisions, whether it be lake developments, event centre,s stadiums, bridges, art galleries or museums. Council makes such decisions assessing information as to needs, affordability and community feedback. Decisions need to be made based on the longterm interests of the district. It was nice to hear of the enthusiasm of our young people at last week’s forum referring to the art gallery/museum and stadium projects. They can’t wait for these facilities to be completed for their education and enjoyment. These children are our future. Brian Lester is chief executive of the Ashburton District Council

■ MERIDIAN SHARE FLOAT

Sixty per cent up front, rest in 18 months Meridian Energy is to be listed on the sharemarket in early November with investors asked to pay 60 per cent of the price up front with the remaining 40 per cent due in 18 months’ time. Prime Minister John Key announced details of the float yesterday morning in what is expected to be New Zealand’s largest ever share market listing. Meridian is the country’s biggest state-owned power company and was last valued at $6.58 billion by Treasury. The Government wants to sell up to 49 per cent of Meridian in a move that could raise up to $3 billion for its coffers. As part of an incentive scheme investors will only have pay part of the money upfront but will receive the full dividend payout for the shares. The remaining money won’t be due until May 2015 - potentially six months after the next general election. If a person sells their shares during the 18

Retail investors will also have more certainty around the price they pay as the share price for mum and dad investors will be capped. shares. He said New Zealanders were sufficiently familiar with the process to make the preregistration phase unnecessary although likely investors could still register interest online. Retail syndicate ANZ, ASB and Forsyth Barr will market the offer to New Zealanders. Ryall said another key difference with the Meridian float was the price cap for retail investors - compared to the fairly standard “bookbuild” used in the Mighty River float. The price cap, which would be set when the prospectus was issued would provide certainty to retail investors. “We understand many people like to know the maximum price they’ll pay before they buy shares.” Key said the instalment receipt plan was effectively an interest-free loan to retail investors. share bonus scheme. There will be a minimum application of $1000 for the first payment in November. Analysts have said the Meridian float would have to be more attractive than the Mighty River Power which was listed on the stock exchange in May. Its shares were sold at $2.50 a piece but have languished under the listing price in recent months. Yesterday morning they were trading at $2.22.

Prime Minister John Key said as with Mighty River Power the Government had a number of objectives, including hitting the target of 85 to 90 per cent New Zealand ownership and retaining majority Government control. Key said the mixed ownership model would result in better, stronger companies for the rigour and transparency that sharemarket listings bring. Mighty River was a stronger company now as a result of the float. Finance Minister Bill English said the instalment receipts plan meant investors would require less cash up front when they applied for shares and was being done instead of the loyalty bonus share scheme run during the Mighty River float. State Owned Enterprises Minister Tony Ryall said a minimum purchase of $1000 worth of shares (60 per cent) was being maintained to encourage widespread take up of the

Reserve Bank Governor Graeme Wheeler says banks will be subject to restrictions on high loanto-value ratio (LVR) housing mortgage loans from October 1. He said banks would be required to restrict new residential mortgage lending at LVRs of over 80 per cent to no more than 10 per cent of the dollar value of their new housing lending flows. He said the LVR restrictions were designed to help slow the rate of housing-related credit growth and house price inflation, thereby reducing the risk of a substantial downward correction in house prices that would damage the financial sector and the broader economy. In a speech yesterday at Otago University, Mr Wheeler said

housing played a critical role in the economy but was also a major source of “value and risk” to the household sector and the banking system. “The Reserve Bank is concerned about the rate at which

house prices are increasing and the potential risks this poses to the financial system and the broader economy,” he said. “Rapidly increasing house prices increase the likelihood and the potential impact of a significant fall in house prices at some point in the future,” he said. “This is particularly the case in a market that is already widely considered to be over-valued,” he said. Mr Wheeler said house prices are high by international standards compared to household disposable income and rents. “Household debt, at 145 per cent of household income, is also high and, despite dipping during the recession, the percentage is rising again,” he said. -APNZ

Delay angers dairy company shareholders Some Westland Milk Product shareholders are angry the company took nearly three weeks to tell them about its contamination scare. WMP revealed on Monday that it had recalled 390kg of lactoferrin powder exported to China. The powder had elevated nitrate levels, apparently because cleaning product wasn’t properly flushed out of the plant before production. WMP said the contaminated lactoferrin had been traced and quarantined and was not a food safety risk. The company told the Government of the contamination on August 2, but told shareholders only on Monday.

Mai Mai farmer Graeme Neylon said he was “disturbed” about the delay, especially considering Fonterra’s recent contamination. “I would have thought the dairy industry would have learned its lesson - that you need to know straight away. I don’t know why they didn’t just let us know. “They’re saying it’s because they had to trace the product, but they could still be tracing the product while they’re letting the shareholders know.” The scare was a “kick in the guts” for Coast farmers, on whom WMP imposed rigorous farm testing and penalties for breaches, Mr Neylon said. “Then we send the milk off expecting it to get the finest treat-

ment and it doesn’t. It’s real disappointing.” There would be a financial impact on WMP and its shareholders, he said. WMP chief executive Rod Quin said the company had told its chairman and directors, who represent shareholders, as soon as it had verified the test results, and had kept them updated. “Information was being updated continuously and we wanted to be sure we had a complete and accurate picture before telling shareholders. “This was tempered by the fact that we knew we were not dealing with a food safety issue so there was no urgency for a shareholder or public advisory.” - APNZ

Young surfer attacked Hawaii authorities say a shark has left a 16-year-old surfer with injuries on both legs. It’s the second shark attack in the state in less than a week. The Hawaii County Fire Department says the boy was bitten on Sunday afternoon. The boy’s condition isn’t clear. A call to a hospital spokeswoman was not immediately returned. On Wednesday, a shark bit off the arm of a 20-year-old German tourist who was snorkelling. – AP

Swim makes waves Eight Chinese policemen were sacked yesterday after their naked swim at a tourist venue made waves online, state media said. The auxiliary police officers were dismissed for “causing a negative impact on the image of the police”, Xinhua news agency quoted the public security bureau of Lushan county in the central province of Henan as saying. - AFP

■ EGYPT

Deadly attack as violence escalates Militants have killed 25 Egyptian policemen in the deadliest attack of its kind in years. It comes as the army-installed rulers escalate a campaign to crush ousted president Mohamed Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood. The assailants fired rocketpropelled grenades at two buses carrying police in the Sinai Peninsula, sources said yesterday, just hours after 37 Brotherhood prisoners died in police custody. The incidents came after Egypt’s military chief vowed a “forceful” response to violence roiling the Arab world’s most populous nation. The Sinai attack raised fears of a return to the wave of deadly Islamist violence that swept the country in the 1990s. Egypt is struggling to put a lid on a deep political crisis and violence that has killed almost 800 people in several days of clashes between Islamist protesters and security forces across the country. Western countries have con-

demned the violence and are threatening to cut off billions of dollars in aid to Egypt in response, but Saudi Arabia said yesterday that Arab nations are ready to step in to fill the financial void. The developments come as judicial sources say former autocratic president Hosni Mubarak, who was toppled in a popular uprising in 2011, has been granted conditional release in one case against him, but that he will remain in custody in an additional case. Morsi loyalists vowed new demonstrations yesterday, although a day earlier they had cancelled some marches citing security concerns. The interior ministry said 25 policeman were killed and two injured in the Sinai attack, which it on “armed terrorist groups”. A border official said afterwards that the Rafah crossing with the Palestinian Gaza Strip, near where the attack occurred, would be closed. – AFP

610kg Saudi man forklifted to hospital A Saudi man weighing 610kg was forklifted to hospital yesterday for medical treatment at the expense of the monarch to reduce his weight. Khaled Mohsin Shairi was flown from his south-western hometown of Jizan to Riyadh on a specially-equipped plane, SPA state news agency reported. It posted a picture of overweight Shairi being lifted on a forklift out of the plane on ar-

rival in the capital. Acting on orders of King Abdullah, the health ministry had to acquire a specially-made bed and a crane to transfer Shairi from his second-floor apartment, SPA said. The bed was made for Shairi in the United States, Sabq news website said. The ministry did not specify the nature of treatment that the young man will undergo. – AFP

A knife-wielding man has killed three people and wounded 12 aboard a bus in the country’s latest rampage attack, police say. A suspect is in custody and officers are trying to confirm him as the assailant in the attack, a government spokeswoman said in the central city of Anyang yesterday. Those killed were an infant and two boys, although it wasn’t known whether the man deliberately targeted young people, Anyang police said. - AP

Husband admits crime The US man who police say fatally shot his wife then posted a photo of her body on Facebook has admitted to the crime. South Miami’s Derek Medina admitted to detectives that he shot his wife “six to eight times” and indeed was the one who posted a confession and a photo of her dead body on Facebook. A police search warrant filed in Miami-Dade Circuit Court, reveals new details about the confession of Medina, whose post on the social media website has drawn worldwide attention to the killing of 26-year-old Jennifer Alfonso. - MCT

Obamas welcome dog President Barack Obama and his family have welcomed a playful new addition to the White House - a dog called Sunny. The black Portuguese Water Dog joins the first family’s other four-legged friend of the same breed, Bo. - AFP

Beads from meteorite

Saudi man Khaled Mohsin Shairi had to be lifted on a forklift to get off a plane.

The earliest iron artefacts ever found - funeral beads strung around bodies in a 5000-year-old Egyptian cemetery - were made from a meteorite. Hi-tech scanning of the beads, discovered by British archaeologists in the Lower Egypt village of el-Gerzeh in 1911, shows the metal came from a rock in outer space. The nine small beads come from two burial sites dated around 3200 BC, where they were found in necklaces along with exotic terrestrial minerals such as lapis lazuli, agate and gold. They are stored at the University College London Petrie Museum. - AFP

Eat well for less

A

s household budgets become stretched, it’s getting tougher to feed a family and keep costs down. Affordable recipe ideas are plentiful enough, but not all cheap-eat recipes are realistic for the average Kiwi household. Countdown has a Feed Four for $15 project that definitely shows cheaper meals don’t need to be boring. Ideas such as spaghetti with crisp salami, sundried tomato and feta, or chicken cacciatore certainly look and sound delicious. In Count-

down’s campaign, launched this month, meals are designed to be easy to prepare, largely cooked from scratch and use a wide variety of ingredients that can be found instore. Each costs no more than $15 plus everyday pantry items such as milk, flour, salt and pepper. New Zealand Nutrition Foundation dietician Sarah Hanrahan says Countdown’s idea is great, but the standard family of four unit doesn’t exist in every household in lower socio-

economic areas. “There’s often larger families and extended families. “Fifteen dollars a meal for four is not that bad ... but the reality is many people are feeding a family of seven on $15.” Research by the foundation with youth showed many were in households where parents were busy or working and didn’t have a lot of time for meal preparation. Try some of these recipes when there’s little left in the kitty at the end of the week.

■ ALL BLACKS

In brief

ABs’ depth to be tested By Daniel RichaRDson You build depth so when a crisis strikes you can navigate through the disaster. Three pivots are unavailable for the All Blacks’ Rugby Championship encounter with Australia at the Cake Tin in Wellington on Saturday night and there are few sides in the international game who could cope with such a fallout. Dan Carter (calf), Aaron Cruden (knee) and Beauden Barrett (calf) will all watch on from the stands on Saturday as Tom Taylor or Colin Slade pulls on the No 10 jersey for the All Blacks. Cruden and Barrett suffered their respective ailments in last Saturday’s 47-29 win over the Wallabies in Sydney, while Carter was injured a fortnight ago. For the past two years the All Blacks have held wider training group camps and some people have questioned their timing and validity. But it’s hard to deny they have contributed to making this week an easier one that it could have been given Taylor has spent time with the side in the past and Slade has 10 test appearances to his credit. All Blacks coach Steve Hansen said yesterday that training ran smoothly with both Slade and Taylor directing traffic.

When asked to meet Australian netball coach Lisa Alexander in her office, Laura Geitz admitted she thought the worst. Their meeting did end in tears - of joy. An emotional rollercoaster ride of a year continued for Geitz when Alexander told her she would be the next Diamonds captain. “We’ve tried to create an environment where regardless of if you’ve played 117 tests or you’ve played none, that everyone’s treated the same,” Hansen said. “You might listen more to the 117-test guy a little bit more than the zero-test guy when it comes to an idea, but by and large, if the team room needs cleaning, the 101-test guy can clean it just as well as the zerotest guy. “I think that culture and that environment makes it easy for people to come into because they know where they stand

and they’ve got to just get on and do their job.” The proof will of course come on Saturday night. Slade never quite convinced during his time in the black jersey from 2010-2011 and didn’t experience a lot of highs during the 2013 Super Rugby season with the Highlanders. On the other hand, Taylor didn’t start a game at first-five for the Crusaders this year as he found a home in the No 12 jersey. “Both players; I’m confident they’ve got the skills to do what we want them to do,” Hansen

said. “They’re confident people and we’ve got Tom Taylor, he’s a 90 per cent goalkicker and Colin’s a pretty accomplished goalkicker too. So they come with a lot of skills.” The All Blacks were also dealt an injury blow to their forward pack yesterday when lock Luke Romano was ruled out of the Rugby Championship due to a torn adductor tendon. Sam Whitelock and Brodie Retallick are set to form the second-row duo for this weekend with Jeremy Thrush to provide cover on the bench. - APNZ

More breakages and more weather delays. The story of the Louis Vuitton Cup finals is beginning to sound rather repetitive after another disruptive day on the water. Three days into the series and we are yet to see two boats finish a race, or get through a full day’s sailing programme. Emirates Team New Zealand picked up their second point of the regatta yesterday, after a damaged wing control line forced Luna Rossa to retire early in the third leg. The breakdown follows a major daggerboard problem on day one, which forced them out just seconds into the race, while they also incurred damage to their wing on Monday. - APNZ

Dixon suspended Southland No 8 Elliot Dixon has been suspended for one week and Taranaki lock Jarrad Hoeata issued an off-field yellow card following judicial hearings yesterday on separate charges of foul play from their ITM Cup matches last weekend. Southland Stag Elliot Dixon was cited under law 10.4 (e) for an alleged dangerous tackle on a Tasman player just three minutes from fulltime in their match at Invercargill’s Rugby Park on Saturday. Tasman won the match 25-15. Tasman halfback Mark Swanepoel was issued with an offfield yellow card for a dangerous tackle in the same match. Hoeata, meanwhile, was cited under rugby law 10.4 (e) for a dangerous tackle and 10.4 (a) for striking a player after an alleged swinging arm tackle on a Canterbury player 12 minutes into the first half of Taranaki’s match against Canterbury in Christchurch on Friday. Canterbury won 30-6. - APNZ

Savea’s future up in air Julian Savea’s Super Rugby future remains unclear. The All Blacks’ wing has been a member of the Hurricanes since 2011, racking up 40 caps and 16 tries in the process, but despite being a Wellington born-and-bred player, he is yet to commit to the franchise for next year. When quizzed about the 2014 season, the 23-year-old couldn’t offer a concrete response yesterday. “Ahh, not sure at the moment. Obviously [I’m] keeping my options open but just focusing on footy right now and I’ll deal with that in [due] process when it comes,” Savea said. As for when an announcement could be expected, Savea also produced another sidestep. The 12-test All Black acknowledged there had been advances from the Crusaders, who are light on outside backs for next year, while the Hurricanes have made no secret of their desire to hang on to him. - APNZ

Ko to defend title

Canterbury Cats back in winning form

World No 1 amateur golfer Lydia Ko is excited to return to the CN Canadian Open this week - the tournament which made her a household name last year. The 16-year-old from the Gulf Harbour Country Club is the defending champion at the event after making history last year when she became the youngest winner on the LPGA Tour. The Pinehurst School student will be in the spotlight again this week and is looking forward to the challenge. “It feels good to play this tournament again,” Ko said from Canada. “Last year this event was such a memorable week for me so I am excited for this week.” Ko, aged 15 years, four months, two days, surpassed the feats of American Lexi Thompson, who was the youngest LPGA Tour winner when she won the Navistar LPGA Classic in September 2011 aged 16 years, eight months, eight days. She also became only the fifth amateur to win on the LPGA Tour and

the first since JoAnne Carner in the 1969 Burdine’s Invitational. Ko was the first Kiwi to win on the LPGA Tour. The previous best result was Marnie McGuire who finished third at the LPGA Safeway Championship in September 2000. She defeated a world-class field by three strokes when she carded a five-under par 67 in the final round at the Vancouver Golf Club. It included four birdies in succession after the turn to seal her most famous win. “I think my best memory from the win is the back-to-back birdies on the back nine. I had four birdies in a row and that makes a lot of difference. It got me from one-under to five-under. ” She admitted that there is extra pressure and hype around her this week as the defending champion. “There is pressure there, yeah. But I’m just going to think about my own game, one shot at a time.” Ko will defend her title at a new venue as the Canadian Open has moved to the the Royal Mayfair

Golf Club in Edmonton, Alberta. She likes the course and traveling around Canada. “The course is quite traditional and I am looking forward to playing there this week. Canada is a cool place. To me it feels kind of like New Zealand.” In her most recent tournament - the British Open at St Andrews - Ko finished tied for 42nd and joint leading amateur. She is looking for improvement this week. “I didn’t play as well as I would have liked to but I think I played strongly in the middle of my rounds.” The New Zealand rep has enjoyed a stellar season in 2013 where she has recorded seven top-10 finishes. She has also extended her streak of never missing a cut to 23 professional events. - APNZ

Ferguson in demand after Furner axing By Ian Mccullough Blake Ferguson is set to become the hottest property in the NRL after David Furner’s shock sacking by Canberra yesterday. The troubled NSW star has a clause in his contract allowing him to leave should Furner depart and the 42-year-old’s axing will fuel speculation Ferguson wants out of the Raiders.

Former Canberra coaches Neil Henry and Tim Sheens are the early favourites to fill the position along with Sydney Roosters assistant coach Jason Taylor and Trent Barrett. On an eventful evening in the nation’s capital, Furner, whose brother Don is the club’s chief executive, was sacked with immediate effect. Assistant coach Andrew Dunemann will take charge for

the final three games of the season with the team sitting one place outside of the top eight on points differential. Furner was with the team in camp in Batemans Bay on the NSW south coast when he received the news and becomes the first coach in the club’s 31year history to be sacked. “It’s obviously a results driven game and we have lost our last three games,” Furner said.

“It’s still terribly disappointing after all the work I’ve put in.” His downfall comes amidst rumours of a squad mutiny with several players believed to have confronted the board claiming they were unable to work under him any longer. The decision ends a long association with the club for the former test and NSW star. - AAP

The Canterbury Cats were back in winning form in round five of the National Hockey League on Monday, with a hard fought 3-1 win over Midlands at North Harbour Hockey Stadium. It was a tight encounter for much of the game with Georgie Blackwood (Canterbury) and Renee Ashton (Midlands) trading first half goals. Canterbury broke free late in the second half however, with goals to Olivia Merry and Cass Reid guiding the Cats to their fourth win from five games at the tournament. Canterbury’s Pippa Hayward said the win was pleasing going into yesterday’s rest day. “I think it’s the best performance we’ve had so far. To put two goals together in quick succession was ideal,” Hayward said. “We need to make sure we have a really good recovery on our rest day and look at some video ahead of what will be a tough game against Harbour on Wednesday.” Earlier in the day, Jessica MacAlister scored right on fulltime for Northland to snatch a 3-2 win over Southern, with Carli Michelsen and Charlotte Harrison also finding the goal. Auckland consolidated top spot on the points table after a 4-1 result over the Central Mysticks, thanks to fine performances from Krystal Forgesson and Katie Gylnn. In the day’s final women’s game, North Harbour edged Capital 2-1 with goals from Petrea Webster and Michelle Borren. - APNZ

Top 10 finishes at Junior World Championships

M

y Junior World Track Cycling Championships campaign is done and dusted. After two months of overseas training it was time to put it all together for two races. First was the individual pursuit – 3km against the clock – and I was in heat 12 of 24 so there were a lot of other guys who could take away any position I set. I aimed for at least 3.20 but after seeing the early times posted I could tell the track was slow. I put everything out there but it was only enough for a 3.24 and third place which, after hav-

Ashburton cyclist Alex Hooper recorded two top 10 finishes at the Junior World Championships in Glasgow in an experience that has only spurred his ambition in the sport. ing a wee rest on the ground, I was disappointed about. With two heats to go I was fourth and started to think I would be riding off for bronze, but it wasn’t to be and I ended up sixth. I was gutted but I also knew I still had the kilo the next evening that I could potentially do well in. I spent the day at the hotel chilling out and preparing the

best I could. My legs were still feeling from the previous day but if all went to plan I’d only be riding for just over a minute. I was 24th out of 29 riders so had a long wait and could tell the track was slow again by the times being posted, but I hoped I could get up and post a quick time. The first 500m was good then boom, my legs couldn’t

Alex Hooper ON THE ROAD

stay over the gear and I blew to pieces. The track was so slow I was over a second and a half slower than my winning time at the track nationals in January. Admittedly, my gear was a bit big for how slow the track was but I chose not to change it before the race as I trained for that gear. I posted the third fastest time but all the guys after me were

the top riders and I ended up seventh. That hurt. It was my last race and I wasn’t able to pull off a world title, let alone a medal, all on my 18th birthday. However, to have two top 10 finishes at the worlds is nothing to be ashamed of. I can now concentrate on the future, going into the elite age group and trying to make a name for myself at the elite level. A big thank you must go to my family for all their support and everyone else who has supported me in any way to helping me succeed and pursue my dream of becoming an Olympic champion.

A three-horse race Race two on the card at yesterday’s Chertsey Trotting Club trials looked like a three-horse race, but the rest of the field chose to gallop rather than trot, counting themselves out of contention. Photo Donna Wylie 200813-DW-120

and Saint Michel broke at the start, drifted and finally settled, jogging out the rest of the distance in their own time. Lighteninglander made a solid start and moved into the lead, but also managed to get out of pace and break leaving Can-

dice Michelle, Innes Boyz and Boylanova to settle and run the rest of the distance. The order remained unchanged until the 800m mark when Innes Boyz (Brylin Boyz – Innes Brae) cracked on the pace and made a solid challenge for the lead.

Boylanova peeled out and tried to run through the centre but while the four year old Monarchy-Cracker Nova gelding succeeded in running down leader Candice Michelle he failed to catch Innes Boyz who rocked home for Terry Chmiel.

Although the health risk is small, the Ministry of Health recommends you run a mugful of water through your drinking water tap each morning before use to remove any metals that may have dissolved from plumbing fittings.

Ashburton District Council re-homes suitable dogs that have been abandoned or surrendered, helping them find new homes with caring and responsible dog owners.

We recommend this simple precaution for all households, including those on public and private water supplies.

There are many dogs at the Pound who need a good home. If you would like to adopt a dog, contact Council on 307 7700.

YOUR STARS by Forecasters

ARIES (MAR 21 – APR 20) Today’s Full Moon falls in a social and serendipitous part of your chart, but where things stand now compared to 4 weeks ago is immeasurable. TAURUS (APR 20 – MAY 21) Where last month’s Full Moon brought things to a tipping point today’s Full Moon goes one step further, creating a game changing professional day. GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUNE 22) Today’s Full Moon in an adventurous part of your chart brings a reminder that it’s all about the journey and keeping your options open. CANCER (JUNE 22 – JULY 24) With a smart head for money in play, your financial instincts sharp and your eyes open you’re able to harness all that today’s Full Moon triggers. LEO (JULY 24 – AUG 23) Today’s Full Moon in your relationship sector and a Full Moon here last month couldn’t be more different, revealing the progress made. VIRGO (AUG 23 – SEP 23) By the time today’s second Full Moon in your work sector brings things to a head this will reveal just how much potential you actually have. LIBRA (SEP 23 – OCT 23) It’s where the fun and spontaneity has been squeezed out of life that you’re able to start fighting back. Life can’t be all work and no play. SCORPIO (OCT 23 – NOV 24) With a repeat of last month’s Full Moon in your home and family sector giving you plenty of hindsight to draw on, this is a reminder to slow down. SAGITTARIUS (NOV 24 – DEC 21) A second Full Moon in your communication sector is giving you a much better chance to ensure the communication lines are open. CAPRICORN (DEC 21 – JAN 20) Just four days after Venus returned to your career sector to open new doors a Full Moon in your income sector creates a trigger for opportunities. AQUARIUS (JAN 20 – FEB 19) Today’s Full Moon in your sign is a do over, with a rare second chance to take your power back at the midpoint in your current solar year. PISCES (FEB 19 – MAR 20) See any work tension today as a challenge to pull back enough to allow time to hear yourself think, but also to play devil’s advocate.

Rafael bolts into Bulls Ashburton’s Rafael Talosaga, 23, with his daughter Emily, 4, has bolted his way into the Canterbury Bulls rugby league representative side. PHOTO MYLES HUME 200813-MH-195

An unknown meatworker from Ashburton has been thrust into the limelight after bolting his way into the Canterbury rugby league representative side. Ashburton rugby league player Rafael Talosaga almost failed to even trial for the Canterbury Bulls representative side, being told he could not take the field because he did not show at an earlier training session. As he was about to jump in his

car to make his way back to Ashburton on Sunday, deflated from being told he could not trial, a coach fired an 11th hour call his way and asked if he could help make up the numbers. But Talosaga, 23, made it a move that coach would never forget, leaving selectors no choice but to pick him for the Canterbury Bulls representative side which kicks off its season against Northland this weekend. “It’s funny, he put me down as an extra player, then the man

said ‘today’s your lucky day because you’re going to get a game’ I went on to play all four quarters in the second row and I made the team,” he said. It was a quick change in fortune for the relatively unknown former Junior Kiwi and Auckland under 17 representative, who moved to Ashburton four months ago with his partner and two children “to give them a better life” and take up a job at CMP Canterbury. It was not long before he got

talking with a colleague about his love of league, and before he knew it he was pulling on the Ashburton Barbarians jersey, playing in the Canterbury division one competition. That led him to Sunday’s trial where coaches and spectators found what they called the diamond in the rough – he even had clubs falling over themselves to sign him up. “After the (Bulls) trial three clubs from Christchurch asked me if I wanted to play for them

and offered me stuff, but I said to them I’m here for my club and that’s who I want to represent and make a name for,” he said. What’s more, Talosaga played centre most his life, but left a telling mark on selectors playing in the second row with his stocky frame and vast range of skills. Talosaga will train with the team tomorrow night and will fly to Whangarei to open the Bulls Albert Baskerville Trophy premiership campaign against Northland on Sunday.

Jesse Ryder banned from cricket for six months Cricketer Jesse Ryder has been suspended for six months after testing positive for a banned substance but will be available to play again on October 19. The 29-year-old took a dietary supplement when playing for Wellington last season and was tested at a Ford Trophy match against Northern Districts on March 24. He returned a positive test for 1-Phenylbutan-2-amine (PBA) and N, al-

pha-diethyl-benzeneethanamine (DEBEA), both of which are banned in competition. He was informed of the positive test on April 12 and appeared in a hearing with the Sports Tribunal earlier this month. Ryder accepts the penalty imposed and will not appeal the judgment. The mandatory penalty for this violation is two years’ suspension but Ryder was handed a

lighter sentence because he was able to establish how the prohibited substances got in his system and that it wasn’t intended to enhance his sport performance. Ryder admitted the violation and explained he had been using a dietary supplement in order to lose weight and had taken two capsules five days before being tested. The supplement didn’t list any prohibited substances on its label.

Three-horse race at trials P20

“I’m devastated by this situation,” Ryder said in a statement. “I’ve never taken drugs and to be in this situation distresses me greatly. I simply took the supplement alongside a training programme I was completing to help me lose weight. “I have attended anti-doping education seminars during my time in cricket and am a strong supporter of Drug Free Sport New Zealand.

“I’m aware of the precautions you need to take. I did take steps to check the supplement but, ultimately, it was my responsibility and I accept that. “Whilst everyone is aware of my well documented battles with alcohol, it’s important for me to state that I abhor drug use of any kind, both recreational and performance-enhancing in sport.” - APNZ
