Buildings destroyed: Volunteer firefighters worked long hours to battle a raging blaze that broke out at the Ashburton Industrial Estate on Saturday night. The fire completely gutted two neighbouring buildings just after 6pm.

Dreams up in smoke An Ashburton couple remain confident of rebuilding their upholstery business for the third time after two devastating disasters claimed their livelihood in as many years. Following the loss of their Christchurch building in the February 2011 earthquake, Sue and Brian Stockdale shifted to Ashburton to start a new chapter and re-establish their upholstery business – Advanced Upholstery. However, once again the Stockdales have been left choked and distraught following a ferocious blaze at the Ashburton Industrial Estate on Saturday night, which completely gutted their business and one other. Volunteer fire crews from Ashburton, Rakaia and Methven worked intense hours battling the leaping flames, but the aftermath shattered the dreams of the two business owners, who were left with only one option. Start again. But for the other business, Lignotech Developments, irreplaceable research material and specialist research items were reduced to nothing more than ash. The fire destroyed everything.

Raging blaze: A blaze at the Ashburton Industrial Estate travelled a path of destruction on Saturday night, completely gutting two local businesses. A member of the team, Gary Haskett, said the fire had left the team devastated. An order for material destined for the United States was also destroyed in the raging blaze. “It’s not easy to replace this stuff. It’s unique, quite special-

ised what we do,” Mr Haskett said. Left virtually speechless from the ruins, Mr Haskett was struggling to find answers. “I just can’t understand what would have caused this,” he said. But according to chief fire offic-

er Alan Burgess, of Ashburton, it could be some time before any answers are found. “It is extremely early days at this stage ... there is a lot to work through. “We have done all we can down here now and the scene is open for investigation, which I imagine will be getting under way soon,” he said. “I’d say it would be quite some time before the team are able to determine what might have caused this though, it could be quite a considerable length of time before anyone gets any answers.” Two large explosions, one believed to be from an LPG canis-

ter, the other still unknown, were heard as the fire raced through both businesses. Thick black smoke also billowed into the neighbouring business, New Zealand Couriers, but thankfully a huge team effort ensured 90 per cent of the items in the warehouse were retrieved – in time for Christmas. As the Stockdales stood back in shock on Saturday night, they knew the reality was to face their recurring nightmare for a third time. “We’ve lost everything. We’ve been through this before and we know we can do it again,” she said. Building owner John Woodham received a text alerting him of the blaze about 6.20pm. He travelled down from his Lincoln home yesterday to assess the damage, which caught him by surprise. “I wasn’t expecting it to be that bad, but the whole thing is devastating. “The timing is terrible, any time for a fire is terrible, but two days out from Christmas, that’s really tough,” he said. “We’ll just have to go through the insurance processes and soldier on now, that’s all we can do.” Fire investigators were expected at the scene yesterday.

For the Solomona family, tomorrow will be a day marked down as their first Christmas without their daughter, sister and mother - Sina. On Saturday, hundreds of people from around the country gathered to farewell the Ashburton mother, just one week after she was murdered in her Cass Street home. Just after 1pm, friends, family and work colleagues of Sina Solomona gathered at the Baring Square Methodist Church in Ashburton to celebrate the 22-year-old’s life and mourn her death. It was standing room only as more than 400 people lined both Baring Square and packed the church hall, as Rev Tevita Taufalele opened the service with a song requested especially by the Solomona family. On this day, the dark reality of a murder investigation was suddenly cast to the back of minds as songs, spoken tributes and prayers echoed meaningfully through the hall. During the service, her cousin described Sina as the “family treasure” and a “beautiful, bubbly, happy and open person”. Her work colleagues from CMP Canterbury also paid tribute, as friends and family gathered round to send the mother, daughter, sister, niece, cousin and friend on her last journey. As the clock tower chimed 3pm, the white coffin lined with a silk blanket, wreaths and memorable tributes was hoisted and carried out of the double doors by several pallbearers, where it was lowered into the waiting hearse destined for Ashburton Cemetery. Friends and family adorned in tribute t-shirts reading, In Loving Memory of Sina Solomona, with a portrait photo of her print-

ed on the front and back with R.I.P, 05-04-1990 – 15-12-2012, followed closely behind to make their way to the burial service. For those unable to attend the funeral, further tributes continued to appear on the Rest in Paradise Sina Solomona, Facebook page. “Today we farewell a beautiful mother, daughter, sister, niece, cousin and friend. As her journey to the golden gates above us is coming to an end, we remember the awesome fun-filled memories we shared with her,” one post read. “You will be dearly missed Sina by everyone. Your smile, your laugh, your personality, your everything. You were one of a kind.” As the service continued through, young children ran around in the sunshine playing in the Baring Square gardens with no real understanding of the enormity of the sad events surrounding the funeral. Other people also gathered outside the church steps to bow their heads and pay their respects – despite not going in to the hall for the service. Last Saturday, the Solomona family’s life was ripped apart as Sina’s death was thrust into the public spotlight just minutes after police launched a murder investigation. Less than six days later, police arrested a youth and charged him with the murder of Sina Solomona, before he was remanded in custody to reappear in the Ashburton District Court on January 14. Sina Solomona is survived by her daughter Kaira, her mother Anuella, her twin sister Loretta and her two brothers George and Richard. To quote the words of a Facebook tribute; “Gone, but never forgotten.”

Business as usual for many Most Mid Cantabrians will be putting their feet up and enjoying the Christmas and New Year break, but for some residents, it’s business as usual.

Gearing up for a busy Christmas Day By Sam Morton Thirteen years of hosting guests and pouring pints, Paul Inwood has mostly managed to escape the curse of working Christmas Day. However, his working patterns are set to change this year as he prepares to spend his first Christmas under the roof of Hotel Ashburton. That’s because he is the operations manager and his role is to oversee the hustle and bustle of Christmas. And so far it looks set to be an interesting and busy shift. More than 240 guests have confirmed their attendance at the hotel’s traditional Christmas lunch, which Mr Inwood says is highly regarded in Mid Canterbury. “The chefs are going to be quite busy and it requires a real team effort to pull a day like that off,” he said. “A lot of preparation goes in to it, but my duty will be to keep an eye on things and be around if anything doesn’t go to plan. “I’m looking forward to it, I’m sure it will be a lovely afternoon,” he said. Interestingly, this year is

also set to be a busy one on the hosting front too, with a number of tourist groups and independent travellers booking rooms out for a number of days between Christmas and New Year. “Summer is always busy, but it can be quite unusual to have a number of guests staying over the Christmas and Boxing Day period, so we’ll do everything we can to help them enjoy their stay, away from home. But donning the uniform on Christmas Day doesn’t faze Mr Inwood, who insists it is all part of the duty and expectations of the industry. “It’s the luck of the draw sometimes. It would be nice to think everyone could have the day off, but the reality is the world doesn’t stop. “In the hospitality industry, Christmas is always a busy time of year no matter where you are, so you have to learn to expect busy shifts. I’ve just been extremely fortunate in the past few years not to strike the day,” he said. “I think it’s great that people can come down here, enjoy their meal and not have to worry about the dishes. How grand.”

Festive smile: Hotel Ashburton operations manager Paul Inwood is gearing up for a busy shift tomorrow.

Still time for a family Christmas By Sam Morton When Jayne Gibson leaves her front door on Christmas Day, she is expecting some horror looks from her four children. That’s because at 2.30pm she is heading to work as a nurse at Ashburton Hospital until 11pm. While most Mid Canterbury residents plan to settle in to their holiday break today, Mrs Gibson is one of many gearing up for a routine shift tomorrow.

And although she doesn’t want to tempt fate, Mrs Gibson is quietly confident the hospital wards will run reasonably smoothly. “We try and get as many people back home for Christmas and sometimes if they do have to stay in hospital, we try and get them to go home for a few hours and spend time with their family, if possible. “You never know what’s going to happen, but I wouldn’t say the hospital will be any busier than normal – it’s just another shift,”

she said. However, it won’t be all work and no family. Mrs Gibson, her husband and the children plan to travel down to Timaru for an early breakfast with relatives. “We’ll be able to spend a few hours down there before I have to head back and get ready for work. That will be nice and even though I won’t be at the house during the day, we’ll always find time as a family to celebrate Christmas. “But as you can imagine, I did get some interesting expressions from my children when they

found out mum had to work on Christmas Day,” she said. But for Mrs Gibson, who has worked as a nurse for more than a decade, rosters have become an accepted part of life. “We try and take it in turns and this year is my turn. I haven’t had to work the last few, so I’ve been quite lucky really. “We always have to have the same number of staff rostered on every shift throughout the year, but as far as administration staff and that goes, we’ll be operating

Next dog trick up in the air? By Cherie Howie The sky is the limit - literally - for the SPCA’s driving dogs. Monty, Porter and Ginny have already turned heads around the world after video of them driving a modified Mini went viral on the internet. Now the man who spearheaded the training to put the dogs behind the wheel is considering their next challenge. Animals on Q director Mark Vette said

one of the ideas he was “tossing around” was teaching the dogs to fly. Vette, who previously held a pilot’s licence, has a brother who is a Cathay Pacific captain and their father was former Air New Zealand captain and Erebus crash investigator Gordon Vette. He said it was “conceivable” the dogs could fly a plane but it was just “a fun idea” for now. The main focus was still the driving dogs campaign, aimed at encouraging people to adopt SPCA dogs, Vette said. Those in the aviation industry reck-

as a skeletal crew,” she said. And for those residents less fortunate to be spending their Christmas Day in a hospital ward, the news isn’t all doom and gloom. “The kitchen does put on a lovely traditional Christmas meal, which is always really good and for those who can’t go home, we try and make it the best experience for them as we can, under the circumstances. “We get into the Christmas spirit,” Mrs Gibson said.

While residents around Ashburton sit back to enjoy their Christmas dinners, volunteer firefighters will have one eye on their pagers and their car keys nearby, ready to rush to the station. Deputy chief fire officer of Ashburton Graeme Baker said Christmas Day would be just another day on call, and in the past his Christmas dinner had often been interrupted by call-outs. “It’s just what we have to do, all of us in town will be on call. People have to know the fire service is ready at all times, no matter what day they call.” Station officer Chris Price will also be on call on Christmas Day, and said that although it often meant interrupting his family’s Christmas festivities, they were behind him all the way. “They’re used to it. They’re really supportive, actually. It’s just part of the job, and when we sign up for it, really the families are signing up for it too.” He said that although being on call meant the firefighters couldn’t drink or go too far from their phones, it could make Christmas Day interesting. “One year there was a house fire right next door to where I was having Christmas dinner. Of course, I still had to rush to the station anyway and get the gear and the truck, there’s not much you can do in shorts and jandals.” He said there could be extra hazards around when working on Christmas Day, with caravans on the roads and children trying out new bikes in town, and the firefighters had to be extra careful. The firefighters do get days off, and none of them are forced to work. “There are about 30 of us in Ashburton and we only really need 20 on call, so we’re all rostered breaks. They’re very fair about it.”

on the idea won’t fly. Nelson Aviation College chief executive Giles Witney said no dog would be enrolled at his flight school – even his own giant schnauzer, the same breed as Monty. “My dog is quite intelligent too, but I wouldn’t let him up in the air. “From a safety perspective, it’s a no-no.” Meanwhile homes are still being decided on for the three dogs, but they are likely to remain in the Auckland area. - APNZ

Dream home: Ashburton couple Paul Turton and Kerry Morgan are delighted to be moving in to their newly built home in time for Christmas. It’s been a rough year for them, but the ultimate outcome has been reached.

The best Christmas gift ever Builder with a good work history – single handedly ruined the house build, virtually from the first cut. The foundation proved unlevel, a swag of wrongful placement of steel reinforcements and many other incorrect specifications and cover-ups were discovered. From start to finish it was a disaster. The shoddy workmanship was clearly visible to an untrained resident, so it was no surprise a registered builder like Mr Turton himself picked up the inaccuracies, and divine intervention was clearly called for. The Ashburton District Council slapped a stop-work notice on the build, ceasing any further development until a resolution had been reached. Golden Homes soon investigated the case and immediately fired the builder. It is understood the builder will

By Sam Morton An Ashburton couple have received the best Christmas gift they could ask for – a set of keys to their newly built home. After living many months in an enlarged sleep-out near the site of their new house, Paul Turton and Kerry Morgan can’t wait to shift in to their spacious four bedroom home. And who can blame them? In the past several months, the couple have been through it all after their initial house build turned sour in June. Christchurch based construction company Golden Homes, who specialise in steel framing, contracted a Geraldine builder in to complete the house build, but the man’s work left the company red faced. The builder, who Golden Homes say was a registered Certified

never build for Golden Homes again. Since that major botch-up, the company have moved heaven and earth to right the wrong and Mr Turton can’t speak highly enough of the turnaround. Now, Mr Turton and his partner want to bury the past and focus on the future. He is delighted with the finished product and describes the completed masterpiece, “the best Christmas present ever”. “They’ve certainly followed through on all their obligations and to be honest they have gone that extra mile too. They pulled out all the stops for us to be in our new home in time for Christmas and we are so pleased with their work. “It’s outstanding,” he said. Golden Homes construction supervisor Rob Ralfe said the company had been left embarrassed by the original builder’s

work and unreservedly apologised for their unfortunate error. “The builder had built for us several times before, with good results, so this was totally unexpected. “What he did here at Paul and Kerry’s place blew us away, we couldn’t believe what had happened because as I said, he was a registered certified builder and we scrutinise our contractors to the last detail.” The company hired a full crew of tradesman for the job and after some long and tiring days and 25 weeks later, the house build suddenly became the couple’s dream. “It’s a great time for us and we are very excited to be moving in to our new home. This has been a long time coming and it is a big moment for Paul and I,” Ms Morgan said. “It would be nice if every story had a happy ending,” she said.

Concern grows for woman missing at Auckland beach Police believe a missing woman whose vehicle was abandoned on Saturday night has ended up in the water at a west Auckland beach. Police, a land search and res-

cue team, surf lifesaving teams and the Westpac rescue helicopter spent yesterday morning searching the Piha area for the woman, after her car was found unlocked in the Mercer Bay area.

Most of the searchers and the rescue helicopter had been stood down by about 2pm yesterday because nothing of any significance had been found. Surf club patrols would con-

tinue searching the coastline for the remainder of the day, Sergeant Dene Duthie said. “Search teams remain available in case further information comes to hand but at this stage

it seems likely that the woman has somehow ended up in the water.” Police would like to hear from a couple who might have seen the missing woman about 7.15pm

on Saturday night walking down the Mercer Bay loop track. The couple told a local resident about their concern for the woman, and police were called. - APNZ

OUR VIEW

The joy of doing Christmas your way By Sue Newman senior reporter

T

he planning, scheming, sleeping and dreaming will end tomorrow morning when Christmas Day dawns. No matter how much we might dislike the commercial hype and the pressure that always accompanies the festive season, when the big day finally arrives, there’s always a little bit of magic. If you’re lucky enough to have small children around on Christmas morning, it can’t help but be a very special time as you watch the joy on their faces as they open presents. If you don’t, there’s still a reason to give thanks – you get to lie in bed a little longer. Christmas is not a time of joy for all people, however. It’s a season that is filled with pressure – pressure to spend, pressure to meet other people’s expectations and pressure to create the kind of Christmas we think we should provide for others. That’s not what Christmas should be about, but it’s incredibly difficult to separate the expectation from the reality. It’s even more difficult if you have children. They see

what others want, what others get and it’s very hard for a child to understand that their own parents may not be able to afford such lavish gifts. At its simplest, Christmas is about sharing, caring and being with the people you want to be with. For some that may mean a very small gathering, for others it’s the full on, hard out big family gathering. If Christmas to you and yours is a simple picnic with only your own family, that’s a fine way to spend the day, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Christmas doesn’t have to be about big gatherings, lavish food and expensive presents. It should be whatever you want. Do it your way. Sometimes it takes a little courage to take a stand at Christmas time, to step outside the expectations of others, to fly your own flag and to say no. Whatever you do, however you celebrate, from us and ours to you and yours, the Guardian team wishes our loyal readers the happiest of Christmases. However you spend that day – enjoy.

OPINION

Fog causes flight delays By Matthew Backhouse and Hana Garrett-Walker Thousands of travellers have had their Christmas plans thrown into turmoil after fog at Wellington airport yesterday forced the cancellation of more than 100 flights. A thick, low fog rolled in during the afternoon, forcing both Jetstar and Air New Zealand to cancel all flights into and out of the capital for the rest of the day. An Air New Zealand spokeswoman said about 100 flights had been cancelled, causing disruptions to “several thousand passengers”.

Services were not due to resume until 9am today. “Air New Zealand apologises for the inconvenience to passengers at this busy time of year, however, the fog conditions are such that it is impossible to continue normal operations.” The airline was looking at putting on extra flights into Wellington today to accommodate disrupted passengers. A Jetstar spokesman said eight flights between Auckland and Wellington and four flights between Wellington and Christchurch had been cancelled. Six more flights had been added to the schedule today to

accommodate travellers whose flights were disrupted. “It’s unfortunate timing before Christmas Eve, but I guess the weather is the weather,” the spokesman said. “We’ve got plenty of seats and we’ve put extra services on to get, I imagine, everyone into Wellington for Christmas.” Former TVNZ news boss Bill Ralston had been due to fly to Nelson via Wellington but was among the hundreds of passengers stuck in Auckland. “I’m at the airport. It’s madness,” he said. “They cancelled three flights in a row, at once, so there was a mad rush for the baggage hall,

and then everybody was wandering around in circles wondering what to do next.” He said people seemed to be in remarkably good spirits despite the cancellations. Ralston said he had “retreated to a nearby airport hotel” and had booked a direct flight to Nelson for today. Wellington Airport spokesman Greg Thomas said yesterday’s thick fog was unusual. “It doesn’t usually last this long, and it’s quite set in at the moment. There’s a southerly breeze blowing but the fog just doesn’t seem to be letting up at the moment.” Mr Thomas said passengers

The role of mayor brings with it the joy of attending many local functions and celebrations and I believe the diverse people that make up this district are its greatest strength. Our district is blessed with a number of caring volunteers and community groups who give up their valuable time to help others throughout the year. Their generosity and dedication fills me with pride and inspires me to do more. Recently I attended the opening of the Tinwald School Hall which is a great example of how the local community saw a need and got together to make it happen. Christmas is also a great time to reflect on how much we have achieved as a district and a good chance to look towards the future. It is great to see the art gallery and heritage centre construction coming along as this will be an asset for the future and help us to remember where we are from.

By Angus McKay VIEWPOINT

The big one that we all want to see happen in the community is the EA Networks Centre. Our district greatly needs the swimming and exercise facilities this centre will provide. The stadium trust members have done a fantastic job in getting close to their fundraising target, with the more public effort still to happen in the new year. A number of residents have thanked council for their effort involving rural roads, some have said it is great to see crushed metal incorporating clay and limestone being used, creating a longer lasting surface. Mary and I wish you a very happy and safe Christmas holiday. Spare a thought for those who continue to work to keep essential services going and make the Boxing Day sales possible. Hamilton teenager arrested A 16-year-old Hamilton boy was arrested yesterday after walking down the middle of the road shooting at passing cars and smashing windows. Police were called to Whatawhata Road in Dinsdale about 8am after receiving reports of a man shooting at a passing car with a gun and smashing parked car’s windows. “Additional information came to

hand that a male offender was armed with a softball bat or a golf club and that a man was lying on the ground in a nearby park,” Senior Sergeant Andrew O’Reilly said. Police arrived at the scene and saw the 16-year-old, armed with a variety of weapons, walking towards them. “Armed police confronted the offender and using voice appeals negotiated his surrender without

incident. Recovered at the scene was a softball bat, a knife and a slug pistol.” The teenager was interviewed yesterday morning, Mr O’Reilly said, but it appeared alcohol and a domestic dispute with his family played a major role in the incident. He was likely to appear in Hamilton District Court today facing a variety of charges. - APNZ

012 is now almost behind us and as we put our minds towards Christmas it is time to reflect on a busy and challenging year. I have enjoyed getting to grips with the increased workload and responsibility my Ministerial portfolios have brought while remaining mindful of representing my Rangitata constituents as MP. As I look back through this year’s diary several significant events in the electorate stand out. In February the Mid Canterbury community had to come to terms with changes at Ashburton Hospital as building safety risks brought a close to the normal surgical programme. I was pleased to be able to host a public forum giving Ashburton folk and the Canterbury DHB the opportunity to discuss the issues which arose. A&P shows at Temuka/Geraldine, Methven, Mayfield and Ashburton all offered an opportunity to catch up with many constituents and to “take the temperature” of the farming sector while seniors forums and regular constituent clinics have given me plenty of opportunities to hear the views and concerns of Rangitata residents. Dementia care was to the fore in Ashburton this year and I was pleased to be asked to officially open Tuarangi Home’s extended dementia care services and also those at Princes Court Rest Home. Rangitata also had the honour of hosting Prime Minister John Key on a visit to the area in July. Mr Key visited businesses in both Ashburton and Timaru and officially opened the Caroline Bay Trust Aoraki Centre. My offices keep a record of my activities in the electorate each year. You might be interested to know some of my activities in 2012 have included delivering 29 speeches in the electorate, hosting nine senior forums, sending out 23 fortnightly newsletters and writing 96 media columns. It has been a very busy and rewarding year. I hope as the year draws to a close you are able to spend some time with family and friends enjoying Christmas and New Year festivities. Hopefully a long, hot New Zealand summer is in front of us and you can spend some time enjoying the beach or lake, barbecues, picnics and other outdoor activities that make New Zealand unique. I wish you all a healthy, happy and safe Christmas and New Year and look forward to meeting and working with and for you in 2013. Rangitata MP Jo Goodhew

Call for a zero drowning toll this Christmas Water Safety New Zealand is calling for a zero drowning toll this Christmas. And it believes it could be possible if people know their limits, do not drink alcohol near water, wear lifejackets, and keep children within arm’s reach. For the past five years, on average, 10

people have drowned in New Zealand waters over the official Christmas holiday period. Last year nine people drowned over the period – which runs from 4pm today, until 6am, January 3. “A greater number of people taking part in water based activity results in higher

PM awards his government eight out of 10 urprise assessment - As the 12, politically hectic months of 2012 begin to – “brain” – fade into history, Prime Minister John Key (JK) has jolted friend and foe alike by assessing the performance of his National-led administration during that time as being worth a grade of eight out of 10. Quick response: Quick has been the response to disagree with such a rosy rating. In fact, it has been greeted with nationwide gasps of incredulity, audible from kilometres away and to be heard wherever two or three are gathered together. In pub, on patio, at dinner table and around the barbecue there can be no other topic of meaningful conversation. “He can’t be serious”. “What planet is he on?” “Come on, John, pull the other one”. “What about, rising unemployment, the ongoing exodus of Kiwis to Australia, DotCom, “Neverpay”, unwanted school amalgamations, ACC privacy disclosure debacles, “water - “no-one owns the water” - rights”, “mixed ownership” model, “Mighty River Power”, Tau Henare’s failed bid for the Speakership of the House”, the unprincipled sackings of the Taylors, Prue and Ross, and a host of other “minor hiccups” all of which might have been thought to contribute to a 2012 government report card verdict of fewer than five. Eight is surely way over

should check their flight’s status on the airport’s website or with their airline, and in some cases they may need to re-book their flights. MetService duty forecaster Philippa Murdoch said the fog could stick around until at least this morning. Before the cancellations, flights out of the capital had been delayed by at least three hours, while others had been diverted to Palmerston North or Nelson. Fog also brought Wellington Airport to a halt on Tuesday, with about 40 flights in and out of the city cancelled. - APNZ

“independent review” - and presumably to come up with the opinion she wanted - of the Bain case and provide her with a definitive answer to the question of whether or not compensation should be paid, was naïve - at the very least - from the start. Particularly was it so, if a failure of the distinguished Canadian jurist to appreciate the intricacies of New Zealand law invalidated his finding. If that were ever a possibility he should not have been employed in the first place. Neither should he have been entrusted with the brief if it was essential his final verdict had to be the one Mrs Collins also favoured. If you want an “independent” opinion - and are prepared to pay $400,000 taxpayer dollars for the privilege - but are then willing to accept such an assessment only if it coincides with yours, why initiate it at all? Surely, in these straitened times, $400,000 is too much to pay for what amounts merely to window dressing. Obviously Mrs Collins was so confident Justice Ian Binnie would, indeed, agree with her that David Bain, despite everything, was not entitled to compensation she had no qualms in offering him the case. “Let her down”: When Mr Binnie “let her down” she had, hurriedly, to call upon a Kiwi legal beagle, Robert Fisher QC, to find fault with his Canadian col-

league’s conclusion. Thus were Mrs “Crusher” Collins’ blushes saved. That this issue is veritably dripping with political potential with a great many votes to be won or lost makes it one the government wants “ to get right”. Unfortunately for Mr Key and his cohorts there is no “right” or “wrong” answer, though an apology to the much put upon Judge Binnie would be very much in order. Compensation tribunal: Now comes word of a “Compensation Tribunal” on which a body of ultra wise people would sit and attempt to come to a decision acceptable to all involved and free of political involvement. I wish it all the luck in the world but without “Solomon the Wise” to chair it - and he’s no longer available - I have serious doubts as to its effectiveness. So to Christmas and the enticing prospects of another New Year: Who knows? Perhaps Mrs Taylor will make a seamless return to the Bridge at Christchurch Girls’ High and Ross Taylor to the No. 4 slot in the Black Caps batting order. Less likely, my golf handicap will come down to a respectable level. However, I’m sure the Guardian will thrive in 2013. The Compliments of the Season to all of you who have stuck with me in 2012………. and even to those who haven’t!

Great ideas for Christmas gift giving I

n just one more sleep everyone I hope will have a present to open. It’s exciting waiting to see what you will get. For some the wait has involved a little prodding, a little poking, a little shaking and little smelling, trying to work out what’s inside their present. Some may ask before the receive their present “What have you got me for Christmas?” For them it is better to receive than give perhaps. So people are givers and some are takers. It’s hard if you a giver to receive, it’s not in your nature and personality. It’s somehow far easier to give a gift, compliment, affirmation or encouragement than to be the one on the receiving end. Christmas time is a time of giving. People I think seem to be more generous around Christmas. People pop in to see each other and often exchange a card or small gift. People tend to be friendlier at this time of the year. I remember reading how during a war on Christmas Day both sides stopped their fighting and each in their own language sung Christmas carols and then the next day they went back to fighting each other. This Christmas some will receive very large or very expensive Christmas presents. For me giving gifts at Christmas is not about how big or expensive they are, the giving of gifts is about saying to the person you are giving it to that you love them, you care about them, you appreciate them and they are special to you. And isn’t that part of the true meaning of Christmas. A tiny fragile baby, that came into the world, like any baby He cried, He needed milk and clean linen, He needed the loving and nurturing embrace of his mother. But this baby wasn’t any ordinary baby, this baby was to change the world. He would turn things upside down. The story of Jesus of Nazareth birth was a risque story, as is the whole of the Bible. Here was a baby born to a unmarried mother who was only about 16 years old. Jesus the infant whose birth we celebrate at Christmas was not only a deeply loved baby, He came to be all that love stands for. This was God’s

gift to the world, a tiny baby. I want you to think if you had been there when Jesus was born what gift would you have laid at the manger? The greatest gifts anyone of us can receive are not wrapped in shiny paper or decorated with fancy bows. I think last Christmas some of the most wonderful gifts I received were not the material ones. They were time with friends, hugs from those who cared, the advice from a wise counsel, time to sit and chat, remember the good times and share a hot chocolate. I am talking about gifts like friendship, love, joy, support, time, appreciation, affirmation, encouragement, hope, peace. Not material ones but as a certain bankcard says, ‘priceless ones’. As we choose the gift we will give others this Christmas may they include the gifts of love, hope, joy, peace, our time and talents, our presence, wisdom, patience, understanding, support, friendship, knowledge and our encouragement. If you want to learn more about the greatest gift ever given, the baby Jesus, then I encourage you to attend a service at one of our churches this Christmas. If you appreciate the gift of music we invite you to join us Christmas Eve at 11pm for Carols by Candlelight at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. If you would like to experience the greatest gift given to humanity you are welcome to join us for a family service at 9.30am on Christmas Day. On behalf of the members of St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Rev David Brown and myself I wish you all a very Happy Christmas full with love, peace, hope and joy. May you make the most of all the opportunities that come your way in 2013. Dellwyn Moylan is Interim Ministry Assistant with St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Ashburton

Methven’s hot spot this summer, the town’s swimming pool, is open and ready for business. Michelle Clyne and four-year-old Stella were among those seeking to cool off last week. And while it might have been a few weeks late opening this year, the pool is making up for lost time as a series of hot days has driven residents to seek the coolest spot in town. In the lead-up to summer, pool leaks were fixed, the large pool was painted and the fence has been repaired. This work has been carried out by the pool’s management committee and by members of the Hinds Lions Club. While the community has a new pool on its agenda for the future, committee vice chair Hamish Gilpin said every effort was being made to ensure the existing pool was well maintained and remained useable until a new one was built. A high use-level was key in ensuring the pool remained viable to run, however, Mr Gilpin said. “We’re open every day and we have concession cards available and pool keys for sale, so we’re doing everything we can to make sure it’s well patronised.”

Christ’s birth wasn’t enough! I

f we could just get the true meaning of Christmas back in the season! Surely if everyone knew that Christmas is about the birth of Christ it would make a difference. But would that really solve the problems in the world today? Millions of babies are born each year, but with Jesus it was different. Here was a baby that would never arch His back and defy His mother. A child who would grow up without demanding special attention. A teenager who never demanded His own way or talked back to His mother and father. A young man who would honor His mother without ever being thoughtless to her. A young man who would listen and follow His father’s instructions carefully as he taught Him his craft. A man who would live without sin and be entitled to having eternal life because He kept the law and was without sin. Billions more have been born and died since that birth in Bethlehem-a birth that had been prophesied many years before... Why was this birth special? Why was this birth so important to us? And if it was so important, why do I say it was not enough? Many would say Christmas is about the giving spirit. God gave the greatest gift that day when He gave the baby Jesus to Mary and Joseph. God the Son, in the form

and life brought joy to many. God Himself said in Matthew 3:17 “This is my beloved son in whom I am well By Mike Grove pleased.” The virgin birth was extremely CHRISTIAN COMMENT important, otherwise He would have been born a sinner like every other person. He would have been born of fornication because Joseph and Mary were not married yet. No, they were not living together, Jesus was not an illegitimate child. God the Holy of a human. Then the shepherds came Spirit formed the babe within Mary’s and gave their gift of adoration. The wise womb - a miracle of God, just as He men came later with their gifts of gold, formed Adam from the dust. This was frankincense, and myrrh. (We could all very important because it allowed Jesus use some gold but frankincense and to be born sinless. He had no inherited myrrh - what is that?!) The spirit of sinful nature! Yet legally as the Son of giving... is that what we need in our Mary and Joseph with the legal right world? More giving? to be heir to the throne of David, He Would more gifts have prevented the fulfilled the prophecy given hundreds of recent school massacre? years before by Isaiah the prophet. Fully More gifts, more celebrations, more human because He formed in the womb merriment and “spirits”. But does the of Mary just like every one of us. Fully spirit of giving really solve anything? God because He was not conceived of Maybe temporarily there is some joy, human flesh. But that was not enough. but then the high wears off, the gifts Yes, His life was important. He lived a fall apart, the hangover and the credit sinless life, doing the will of His father card bills bring back the reality. There is Joseph but also the will of God the definitely some good in the giving spirit, Father. but is it the solution to the world’s Teaching, healing, casting out demons, problems? No. feeding the hungry, changing lives, Many look at the man, Jesus Christ helping people find purpose. But His as a wonderful example, an ideal to birth and His life were not enough... strive for, a wonderful teacher, a distant, It is what He did through His death vague, and friendly figure. His birth and His resurrection from the dead that

makes the picture complete. Jesus was born to die, to be the penalty for the sins of all mankind, “the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God.” (I Peter 3:18) He lived a sinless life, He did not deserve to die, He gave Himself for us. Talk about a spirit of giving! He humbled himself and became a man, He lived a sinless life then gave Himself as a sacrifice for all mankind. Have you ever rejected a gift offered to you at Christmas time? Why? You didn’t want it? You didn’t need it? It was too small, wrong colour, too big, wrong style.... The gift Jesus offers is the gift that WILL CHANGE MAN’S HEARTS! Forgiveness and eternal life with God our Creator! He was born as a sinless babe, lived a sinless life, taught the Truth of the Word of God, He was the Living Word of God. He gave His life as the perfect sacrifice. He paid the penalty for our sins so that we could be accepted by a Holy God. He verified that He was the “real deal” when after 3 days in the tomb He rose again! He conquered death as only God could! He was Who He said He was! We can believe what He has to say! He offers us a gift of forgiveness but believing He was born is not enough. You must believe the whole story - then you must realise that you NEED the gift He offers. Why would you reject such a wonderful, everlasting gift? Bombing kills nine in Pakistan By Riaz Khan A suicide bomber in Pakistan killed nine people including a provincial government official at a political rally held at the weekend by a party that has opposed the Taliban, officials said. The rally in Peshawar, the capital of northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, was held by the Awami National Party, whose members have been repeatedly targeted by the Taliban. Among the dead was Bashir Bilour, the second most senior member of the provincial Cabinet, said Ghulam Ahmed Bilour, the politician’s brother and federal railways minister. Over 20 others were wounded by the blast, said local police officer Sabir Khan. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned the bombing in a statement, reiterating the United Nations’ support for Pakistani efforts “to combat the scourge of terrorism”. Bilour was leaving the rally after delivering the keynote speech when the attack occurred, said Nazir Khan, a local Awami National Party leader. “There was smoke and dust all around, and dead and wounded people were lying on the ground,” he said. The suicide bomber was on foot, said another police officer, Imtiaz Khan. Mian Iftikhar Hussain, the Khyber

Pakhtunkhwa information minister and a member of the Awami National Party, said both he and Bilour had repeatedly received threats from militants. He condemned the attack and said the government needed to intensify its battle against the Taliban. “Terrorism has engulfed our whole society,” said Hussain. “They are targeting our bases, our mosques, our bazars, public meetings and our security checkpoints.” Ten Taliban militants attacked the military area of an international airport in Peshawar with rockets and car bombs a week ago, killing four people and wounding over 40 others. Five of the militants were killed during the attack, and five others died the next day in a gunbattle with security forces. Also at the weekend, police said a mob in southern Pakistan stormed a police station to seize a mentally unstable Muslim man accused of burning a copy of Islam’s holy book. The crowd beat him to death, and then set fire to his body. The case is likely to raise further concerns about the country’s harsh blasphemy laws, which can result in a death sentence or life in prison to anyone found guilty. An accusation or investigation alone can lead to deaths, as people take the law into their own hands and kill those accused of violating it. Police stations and even courts have been attacked by mobs.

Police arrested the man on Friday after being informed by residents that he had burned a Quran inside a mosque where he had been staying for a night, said local police official Biharud Deen. An angry mob of more than 200 people then broke into the police station in the southern town of Dadu and took the accused man, who they say was under questioning. Deen said police tried their best to save the man’s life but were unable to stop the furious crowd. Police have arrested 30 people for suspected involvement in the attack, said Deen. The head of the local police station and seven officers had been suspended, he said. Past attempts by governments in predominantly Muslim Pakistan to review these laws have met with violent opposition from hardline Islamist parties. In southwestern Pakistan, gunmen late Friday killed 11 Pakistanis and Afghans who were trying to cross into neighboring Iran to travel on to Europe as illegal immigrants, said local government official Zubair Ahmed. The shooting took place in Sunsar town in Baluchistan province, he said. It was not immediately clear who was behind the attack, but hundreds of Pakistanis and Afghans are captured by Iranian border guards every year for illegally trying to travel to - AP Europe to find better jobs.

The Sun and the Daily Mirror carried photographs of the 65-year-old rocker with a pale boutonniere and a dark blue suit, and his 34-year-old bride in a traditional white gown and a clutch of matching white flowers. The Sun quoted Wood as saying “I’m feeling great” as he and his bride kissed and posed for pictures outside the exclusive hotel in London’s upscale Mayfair district. The newspapers said the guests included singer Rod Stewart and his wife Penny Lancaster as well as ex-Beatle Paul McCartney and his wife Nancy Shevell. A call and an email to Wood’s US-based agent weren’t immediately returned . - AP

Australian DJs could face prosecution over hoax call By Danny Kemp British prosecutors will decide whether to pursue charges against two Australian DJs after a nurse who took a hoax call to a hospital treating Prince William’s pregnant wife Catherine apparently killed herself. Scotland Yard said officers have sent a file to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) over the prank earlier this month by presenters Mel Greig and Michael Christian, from Sydney’s 2Day FM radio station. Indian-born nurse Jacintha

Saldanha, 46, was found dead in her lodgings near King Edward VII’s Hospital in central London, where Catherine was being treated for acute morning sickness, on December 7. “Following the death of Jacintha Saldanha, officers have liaised with the CPS as to whether any criminal offences had been committed in relation to the hoax call made to King Edward VII’s Hospital in the early hours of Tuesday, 4 December,” Scotland Yard said in a statement yesterday. It said officers submitted a file to the CPS on Wednesday for it

to consider whether any potential offences may have been committed by making the hoax call. British media said no announcement had been made until yesterday because police wanted to be sure they had contacted all the relevant family members of Saldanha. In England and Wales, the CPS is responsible for deciding whether charges will proceed in criminal cases, while police are responsible for investigating and collecting evidence. At the nurse’s funeral in India last Monday, her widower Benedict Barboza and the couple’s

two teenage children said British police were investigating the tragedy “and they have assured us of a full and fair investigation”. A London inquest heard earlier this month that Saldanha had been found in staff accommodation and there were no suspicious circumstances over her death. She also had marks on her wrist. Saldanha left three notes, one of which reportedly criticised colleagues over her treatment at the hospital. British detectives told the inquest they would be asking their counterparts in NSW to help them carry out interviews.

It was not immediately clear how British prosecutors could pursue foreigners for a possible offence originated outside Britain. Greig and Christian made tearful televised apologies for making the call, in which they posed as Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles and obtained private details of Catherine’s medical condition. Australian police say death threats have been made against the presenters. The station has cancelled the show which ran the segment, suspended all prank calls and pledged at least $A500,000 to

help the grieving family. Australia’s media watchdog has also opened an investigation into the call. The hospital has defended itself, saying it offered support to Saldanha and had stressed to her she would not be disciplined for being taken in by what it described as a “cruel trick”. But British MP Keith Vaz, who has been campaigning on the family’s behalf, said the hospital had so far failed to fully answer a number of their questions. He published letters he sent to its chief executive, John Lofthouse, and to the radio sta-

tion’s owners setting out dozens of detailed queries. Relatives “still do not have any confirmation of the facts of exactly what happened”, he told Lofthouse, or “written confirmation of the answers” to previous questions. He asked the radio station why there had allegedly been “no attempt to contact the family and offer support in any way”. William and Catherine, who are expecting their first child, have stressed that they did not make any complaint to the hospital about the fact that Saldanha had put through the prank call. - AFP

Southampton to New York on the Queen Mary 2

It is a moving experience on the Queen Mary 2 as the floodlit Statue of Liberty emerges out of the pre-dawn darkness, while the lights of Manhattan twinkle on the water. On the Statue of Liberty there is a message of hope: ‘Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.’ It has inspired generations of travellers as they enter New York Harbour after sailing the mighty Atlantic Ocean, in the hope of finding a better life. To be honest, these days Cunard liners do not have much in the way of huddled masses, but at the end of an Atlantic voyage passengers still crowd on deck to be greeted by Lady Liberty. It is a moving experience: the floodlit statue emerges out of the pre-dawn darkness, while the lights of Manhattan twinkle on the water. It is an unforgettable sight and an amazing end to a voyage that started in Southampton a week earlier. When we made the journey there was a real sense of occasion as the Queen Mary 2 glided up to Pier 88 in midtown Manhattan. We were following in the wake of the great Cunard liners of the past: the original Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth and, of course, the QE2. The journey to New York was a remarkable adventure and one that was totally different to any other cruise. For a start, it was non-stop. Usually, cruise liners are a means of visiting different destinations for a really varied holiday on which you only unpack once. But on a transatlantic cruise the ship is the destination - if it fails to

ARIES (Mar 21st Apr 20th) Venus and Jupiter start this week like they ended the last one, face to face, but this is the perfect aspect to prime generosity of spirit. You may find yourself wanting to reach out to those you know near to home and far away to express festive wishes. Your cup can certainly overflow, and perhaps the main challenge is not to get too swept away with all this.

It may not have been the best time, weather-wise, but when Jonathan Grun stepped aboard the luxury Cunard liner Queen Mary 2 recently he stepped into another world - one of luxury and relaxtion. What more could you ask for when you are on holiday. keep you entertained it could be a very long week, with no prospect of getting off. To raise the bar further, we made the voyage in November. No lolling by the pool - just short days, long nights and the prospect of poor weather. If the QM2 could deliver an enjoyable holiday in those circumstances it would be doing very well indeed.

The short answer is that it did. (Helped by the fact I had a reasonable pair of sea legs, I’m sure.) Rain was pouring down as we joined the QM2 in Southampton, but the boarding was painless and our luggage arrived in our room just minutes after we had. The deluge was the onset of a storm that was one thousand miles wide. As QM2 Captain Chris Wells declared, it was a deeper

When money is no object the QM2 offers five duplex apartments which are two stories high. Each apartment features its own gymnasium and balcony and of course, butler and concierge service.

TAURUS (Apr 21st May 21st) You might well find yourself in a situation this week where you are spending time with people who have different tastes and persuasions from you. Check inside yourself for the things you might feel less tolerant than some about and then you can prepare to deal with this. Understanding that others are entitled to a different path can keep your Yule peaceful.

GEMINI (May 22nd Jun 21st) Your exuberance can know few bounds and you may find there is a greater than usual amount of interaction with those immediately around you, but don’t try too hard to say the right things. In fact, the best policy is to say nothing at all unless the social niceties you utter are those you mean. You might also find yourself thinking about last-minute travel.

depression than the one hanging over the BBC! In the following days it would bring widespread flooding to large parts of the UK and we would be going through some of the very rough seas that it had churned up. While Titanic star Kate Winslet was on her way to Buckingham Palace to receive her CBE, way out in the ocean the QM2 (the modern day queen of the Atlantic) was taking eight-metre-high seas in her stride. The giant 137,348 tonne liner is beautifully stable and makes light of rough seas. If you are a good sailor you can enjoy the experience: one moment you feel you are walking on the moon with a sense of weightlessness, the next you feel as if you are the man doing the London Marathon in a heavy diving suit. But whatever the weather, life goes on as normal. Outside the sea is raging, while inside men in dinner jackets and women in long dresses are sipping champagne and wondering what to choose from the brilliant restaurant menus. With so many things on offer it is unlikely you will be bored. In fact, despite the fact that clocks go back over the course of five

With so many things to do on offer it is unlikely you will be bored and there’s always the option of lolling around in a deck chair if that’s your thing. evenings to bring you gently on to New York time, there are still not enough hours in the day to do everything that takes your fancy. Lectures, recitals, flower arranging, acting classes with RADA, dancing lessons, great performers and professionally staged shows, all compete for your attention. Turn the corner and there are women of a certain age playing cards with ferocious intensity, while up a few decks golfers are using the driving range. Use the gym, have a massage or a facial, take afternoon tea to the sound of a string quartet, perhaps watch a 3D film. You really can do what you like: you are thousands of miles from anywhere, your phone is very unlikely to ring and if you want to curl up with a book and a cup of coffee, or learn how to make martinis, or simply look at the sea you can because you are on a holiday with a difference. There is no need to set the alarm for an early morning excursion ashore: there aren’t going to be any. Your time is your own. Even marching around the deck to gaze at an ocean that most people usually only see from the window of a high-flying jet is fas-

CANCER (Jun 22nd - Jul 23rd) Your caring streak can come out today but it is important that you care about yourself too. If someone is sitting back letting you do all the work, ask yourself if this is fair. Obviously you probably don’t want a quarrel but a few gentle hints might rouse someone into action and also prevent you from feeling resentful and like a victim.

LEO (Jul 24th - Aug 23rd) Although the vibe can be bright today, the Moon can see you find it hard to disguise how you really feel. If you are around people that you feel out of sync with it can seem particularly noticeable. This is also a time when demands on you to do your duty may seem less attractive than in the past. What has been a bubbly few weeks needs to remain that in your eyes.

VIRGO (Aug 24th Sep 23rd) If you find yourself off work today or having a shorter working day, it is likely to please you. The Moon is going to give you an added appreciation of variety, useful for this time of year. Yet if you do have to work as normal you might find yourself restless and keen to do something different. Avoid becoming competitive over any element of the celebrations.

Merry Christmas

LIBRA (Sep 24th Oct 23rd) The flow of conversation can be warming as much as any of the goodies of the festive season. Yet someone you encounter may get on their hobby horse, and if so, try to remove yourself from the utterings of any such bigoted bore. Actually, if you are lucky you could end up encountering some fascinatingly different people and situations.

SCORPIO (Oct 24th - Nov 22nd) If you are a philosophically minded Scorpio, with an eye on the world’s resources, the whole razzmatazz of this time can seem off-putting, especially if you are attuned to those who have so little. In contrast, if you live very much in the moment, savouring to the max any of the food and drink on offer, this can give you an opportunity to relax, enjoy and not worry.

cinating. In the bumpy aftermath of the tempest we really had a sense of the power of the sea. And then, after the waves subsided, there was a glorious day of blue skies, glassy flat seas and warm sunshine. Some people were even wearing shorts and sitting in the sun as we headed towards the spot where the Titanic went down in very different conditions a century before. Passengers with Cunard eat in restaurants that are linked to their accommodation - the biggest restaurant that serves most passengers is the Britannia Grill, while more luxurious suites allow entry to the Princess and Queens Grills. In addition there is more relaxed buffet catering and a speciality restaurant named after US celebrity chef Todd English. Wherever you dine the standard is very high. But eating is only part of the fun on board - you can take the opportunity to tour the universe, if you wish. The QM2 boasts the only planetarium at sea, which puts on stunning shows narrated by Harrison Ford and Clint Eastwood. With limited seating it proves to be a must-see ticket - the shows are indeed breathtakingly beautiful.

And, of course, when you are in the middle of an ocean the real stars can be pretty spectacular if you can find a dark spot. Cruising the Atlantic - even in a stormy winter - is an extraordinary experience: truly a holiday of a lifetime. On our cruise some passengers were making it a round trip and gliding back to Southampton the same day after just a few hours ashore, while others were taking the opportunity to enjoy one of the most exciting cities in the world before flying back to the UK. The voyage there took seven days; the flight home was just seven hours. But although the flight was fast and efficient it certainly lacked the glamour, sense of history and sheer fun of the sea journey.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23rd - Dec 21st) Your mood is likely to be elevated unless any little details start to irritate or annoy you. Or it might be that someone points out to you what you still need to do. This may see you happy to clear up any last minute jobs or feeling resentful that you can’t relax and move into a more informal mode. Either way, it will probably come out okay in the end.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22nd - Jan 20th) The Moon is well placed for a Christmas Eve, being in Taurus. This can bring out feelings of warmth and hospitality, so if anyone pops in to see you, you’ll probably want to make them very welcome. With the Sun in Capricorn forging a fine link with Neptune you can be particularly thoughtful. Some late gift shopping may see you open the purse strings once more.

AQUARIUS (Jan 21st - Feb 19th) If you have had a hectic last few weeks, your home can represent something of a sanctuary today, and spending time there wrapping some gifts and staying warm and cosy can appeal to you at one level. However, at another, with Venus and Jupiter in opposition, invitations can tumble in and they may be hard to refuse. Follow your muse.

SOLD SOLD SOLD SOLD SOLD SOLD SOLD SOLD SOLD SOLD SOLD SOLD

PISCES (Feb 20th Mar 20th) Your sensitivity can be a huge strength and sometimes quite a challenge. Yet any sweet vibes that flow through to you today can be especially heart-warming. Someone in the family that you have never been fully sure of can also surprise you with a generous offer. If there have been hostilities in the past, the trick will be in putting these to one side.

By Andrew Alderson New Zealand Cricket’s director of cricket John Buchanan could be a casualty in the balance of power at NZC in the wake of the Ross Taylor captaincy saga. Despite direct calls to Buchanan and a request to speak to him through NZC’s media department, the director of cricket has stayed silent, though he did respond to inquiries with a courteous text saying he could not comment at this stage. Yet he remains a key piece in what has been a 1000piece summer holiday jigsaw for New Zealand fans.

Buchanan’s role in the soap opera which resulted in Taylor’s exit as skipper seems crucial to understanding the full picture. He was an unequivocal supporter of Taylor remaining captain in all forms of the game but was overruled in favour of what NZC claimed was a preferred split captaincy option with Brendon McCullum taking over in limited overs. A source said Hesson and Buchanan engaged in “robust discussion” on the topic during the Sri Lanka tour. Taylor’s decision to step away from the test leadership means McCullum now leads New Zealand in all three international formats. After Taylor was axed as captain - or in NZC-speak “turned down the test captaincy” - he spoke about Buchanan’s role in events: “John has been outstanding in this process. “He gets a lot of flak but has been an amazing support for me.” The lack of Buchanan’s right-of-reply on the captaincy issue is a shame. Whether you agree or disagree with his cricketing views, they are often insightful and innovative. However, embracing robust, open debate on the topic has hardly been NZC policy in recent weeks. Instead, the governing body is left with a director of cricket contracted until after the 2015 World Cup who at best disagrees with Hesson and

Henderson to lead BikeNZ Lotto Belisol professional Greg Henderson will lead a New Zealand team in the Jayco Herald Sun Tour in his adopted home of Melbourne early next year. He was keen to compete as a lead-in to the New Zealand road championships and the Tour Down Under in Adelaide next month. The Herald Sun Tour is Australia’s oldest stage race, and has been revived for its 60th anniversary as a four-day event from January 3-6 on the back of the annual Bay Criterium series starting on January 1. Henderson will lead a national team comprising London Olympian Westley Gough, 2012 Bontrager Livestrong under-23s Josh Atkins and James Oram, Tom Scully who rode for Garmin development this year and Node4 Subaru pro Mike Northey. The Herald Sun Tour is no longer a UCI-sanctioned event, meaning that Henderson, as a World Tour rider, could not compete unless it was for a sanctioned national team. Tour organisers, keen to get the Melbourne-based star into the event, contacted Bike New Zealand with the offer to fully support a national team for the event. “It’s an excellent opportunity for some of our young guys to ride themselves into some form in a well regarded stage event,” said Bike New Zealand’s Bryan Simmonds. Henderson is excited to compete, the city where the Henderson family now lives in the southern hemisphere summer. “Melbourne is my second home town and when I race around here I get as many ‘Hendys’ called out as anywhere else in the world. “I have a fairly big fan base here now so I feel like it is home and I enjoy racing in Melbourne,” Henderson said. “Of course the Herald Sun Tour

Ifill was the subject of a “blatantly racist” remark from a fan behind the Phoenix bench in his side’s 3-1 defeat to the Reds last weekend. - APNZ

• Tua back in the ring David Tuia’s comeback is coming back - and he is being lined up to fight a world-ranked heavyweight boxer in New Zealand next year. Thought to be retired after his shock loss to US journeyman Monte Barrett last year and then enduring personal issues like the end of his marriage, Tua is said to be keen to return to the ring but will not do so unless he fights a credible opponent. Tua has once again joined forces with boxing promoters Duco Events - a significant change. - HOS

• LeBron leads Heat LeBron James scored 30 points and Dwyane Wade added 21 to power the reigning NBA champions Miami Heat to a 105-89 victory over the Utah Jazz yesterday. James scored 12 points in a key third-quarter surge, and also contributed nine rebounds and seven assists for the Heat who improved to 18-6.. - AFP

Greg Henderson: ‘Melbourne is my second home town’ has such a huge prestige. “It has been going for so many years. “It has been on and off of late, and it is a bit shorter which is unfortunate, but it’s a very historic race. “I will get some good legs out of it. “I won’t be firing on all eight cylinders but it will put me in good stead with a week after that the nationals and then I will be in good nick to lead out the big German in the Tour Down Under which is the first big goal of the season. The New Zealand team comprises a young squad who have enjoyed good success in 2012. Gough is coming back after a superb track year where he won the bronze medal in the team pursuit at the London Olympics and a bronze in the team pursuit and individual pursuit at the world championships. Atkins, 20 (Christchurch) won the Tour of Southland last year and was fourth in the nationals championships this year. He moves from the Bontrager Livestrong team to the new

development squad with Omega Pharma-Quickstep in 2013. Northey, 25 (Auckland) comes off overall victory in the Tour of Southland to highlight his first year with the UK-based Node4 Subaru professional team. Oram, 19 (Auckland) is a former junior medallist in the world championships who will be in his second year with Bontrager Livestrong in USA. Scully, 22 (Invercargill) enjoyed an excellent year including finishing third in the under23 Paris Rouxbaix for the Garmin Sharp development and a stagiaire for Garmin Sharp Barracuda at the end of the season. He has good history in Melbourne, winning the scratch race gold medal at the world cup in 2009 and the following year won a stage of the Jayco Bay Cycling Classic. The tour begins with a 4.8km time trial in the beachside town of Williamstown followed by a 144km stage to Bendigo, a 145km stage in the Yarra Valley and final 90km stage centred on the famed Arthurs Seat climb. - APNZ

Redknapp blasts QPR’s EPL ‘stars’ Queens Park Rangers’ manager Harry Redknapp lashed out at the west London club’s big names, describing some of them as over-paid after his side’s 1-0 defeat at Newcastle this weekend. Redknapp was seething in the aftermath of his first defeat since taking over from Mark Hughes last month and the former Tottenham boss claimed too many of his squad aren’t earning their vast salaries. Backed by QPR’s Malaysian owner Tony Fernandes, Hughes - who was sacked to make way for Redknapp - embarked on a pre-season spending spree that led to a host of big name players, including Jose Bosingwa, Esteban Granero, Julio Cesar and Andrew Johnson, arriving at Loftus Road on high wages. But those stars have failed to repay the club’s investment and will reach Christmas second bottom of the English Premier League with just one win from 18 matches. “There are a lot of players at this club who earn far too much money for what they are; far, far, far too much money for their ability and what they give to the club,” Redknapp said. “I don’t really want to see the

owners have their pants taken down like they have in the past. “There’s a lot of agents made money out of them. “I fined a player last week and he was earning more than any player earned at Tottenham. “You shouldn’t be paying massive wages when you’ve got a stadium that holds 18,000 people. “This club (Newcastle) holds 52,000 and most of their players will be nowhere near some of the wages some of the players are earning here (at QPR).” Redknapp also confirmed that Portugal right-back Bosingwa had been fined a fortnight’s wages after refusing to sit on the bench for last weekend’s 2-1 victory over Fulham. Bosingwa signed from Chelsea in pre-season on a big-money contract but has so far failed to deliver the performances to match his salary. “He didn’t want to be on the bench and didn’t want to be a substitute, so he went home,” Redknapp said. “He has been fined two weeks’ wages, STG130,000 ($A203,000). Not too bad for two weeks. “Decent, isn’t it? Not too bad for playing on a Saturday, it’s okay.” - AFP

Orr Stakes an option for Mufhasa A tilt at the C F Orr Stakes in Melbourne is among the options for New Zealand’s reigning champion galloper Mufhasa. The eight-year-old, which races as King Mufhasa in Australia, defied his age to score a comprehensive win in

Saturday’s Group Three Manawatu Challenge Stakes (1400m). The Stephen McKee-trained gelding has claimed two of his 10 Group One wins - the 2011 Toorak Handicap (1600m) and this year’s Futurity (1400m) - at Caulfield, the venue

for the Orr Stakes in February. He finished fifth in his attempted defence of the Toorak in October and had had two runs on unsuitable rain-affected tracks before Saturday’s race. “He was back on a good track and his sprint lasts thatbit longer,” McKee

said. “He was very fit and with that bit of age in his legshe’s better suited by the drop back to 1400 metres.” Sam Spratt steered Mufhasa to the front and he cruised around the home turn before unleashing his customary turn of foot to kick away. - AAP

TAYLOR CAPTAINCY WRANGLE LEAVES BUCHANAN ON THE SIDELINES P12 | HENDERSON TO LEAD BIKENZ TEAM P13

Brownlie ready to step up Returning test batsman Dean Brownlie relishes the idea of extra responsibility being thrust on his shoulders as New Zealand prepare for a battering in South Africa. The absence of former captain Ross Taylor leaves a gaping middle order hole. Players like Daniel Flynn, Peter Fulton, James Franklin and Brownlie will be vying for the roles around 4 and 5 in the tests at Cape Town and Port Elizabeth next month. None have Taylor’s numbers and so there’s an element of making do in South Africa before Taylor returns, which is expected to be against England in February. If he gets one of those spots, Brownlie won’t be approaching his international return with any trepidation. The Perth-born and raised Brownlie hit three half-centuries in his first five test innings late last year, and coped better than most with the short ball at Brisbane and in New Zealand’s historic win at Hobart. There’s a glass-half-full attitude, which may in part stem from his Australian upbringing. This is welcome at a time when the outlook for New Zealand’s test chances in the republic against the world No1 test nation is as bleak as it’s ever been. “Hopefully there are high expectations on me. I want that, and want to do well,” Canterbury batsman Brownlie said. Brownlie, with a 31.25 test average, and the other New Zealand batsmen can expect a serious examination of their back foot game from the premier South African quicks, Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel.

Tech Stags’ Michael Gallagher congratulates Joe Peters on taking the wicket of Tech Sharks batsman Joe Wise during the Tech derby.

Stags pick up unwanted record Lauriston were the big winners in the latest round of senior cricket’s Muirhead Rosebowl on Saturday. Lauriston got their revenge on Coldstream, and were replaced as the side with the lowest score of the season. In October Coldstream rolled Lauriston for 18 for a 180-run win in their first meeting of the season, but Lauriston turned the tables with a convincing seven wicket win at home on the weekend. While Lauriston turned around the result, their claim to the lowest total was also taken away as the Tech Stags were scuttled for 17 by the Tech Sharks in the Tech derby. Allenton was given an early Christmas present, handed the six points for the win when Fairfield couldn’t find a team, while Methven had the bye. The competition resumes on January 12 with the fourth round of the Muirhead Rosebowl which

Jason Harrison took 2/13 for Coldstream as the side slumped to a third consecutive defeat, after four straight wins to start the season.

By Jonathan Leask

runs through to January 26 when the competition turns to twenty20, while the Mid Canterbury representative team is on Hawke Cup duty, and then resumes again in March with the final round before the playoffs.

Lauriston v Coldstream Lauriston went a long way to putting their earlier season nightmare behind them when they cruised to a seven wicket win over Coldstream. With the memory of the 180run hammering still haunting Lauriston they got stuck in with the ball to dismiss Coldstream out for 68, their lowest tally of the season.

Alex Hooper was the main destroyer, clinching a five wicket bag with a wicket off the final ball of his nine overs for figures of 5/21 while his father Rob chimed in at the other end with 3/15. Jono Print again led the way with the bat for Coldstream making 19, but no other batsman could reach doubles figures. Lauriston then made short work of the chase, hauling in the target after 13.3 overs. At one stage Lauriston was flying at 41/1 after six overs, but lost a further two wickets on their way to a seven wicket win after Nick Gilbert and Scott Morgan both scored 20.

The Sharks won the toss, elected to bowl but only had seven overs in the field followed by a short time at the crease in another dominant display. It only took 12.5 overs to dismantle the Stags who now hold the honour of the lowest total of the season with 17, bettering Lauriston’s capitulation for 18. Dan Hurley ripped through the Stags’ batting order taking 5/8 off his four overs, and Jason Morrison finished with 3/3 from three overs. Another 10 wicket win loomed for the Sharks in the Tech derby but they reversed their battling line-up and got the meagre total four down after 5.5 overs. The win keeps the Sharks’ unbeaten streak at seven while the Stags have the same number of defeats in a row this season.

Quote: Mitch Hedberg Trivia question: 655 (five minutes shy of 11 hours)

Bring it on is the 28-year-old’s attitude. “I don’t think I’ve ever gone into a game thinking we’re going to get beaten. We have to stick to our plans and what we think will be the best way to beat South Africa, and go in 100 per cent.” As for the short stuff, “if it comes, it comes”. His proficiency at the horizontal bat shots, the pull and cut, courtesy of the hard pitches of Western Australia, could give him an edge over other New Zealand batsmen. Brownlie’s test career, which began so encouragingly late last year, stalled, first through injury - a broken finger at Whangarei in February - then a loss of form in the West Indies. So in October he took himself off to the Global Cricket School in Pune, India. It has received endorsements from Brett Lee, Andrew Strauss and Matt Prior. Brownlie is a convert, too. “It was an excellent experience; I’d recommend it to anyone.” He has no doubt he’s a better player in spin-friendly conditions now than he was pre-Pune school. The selectors’ advice to Brownlie during his time out of the national team was simple: get runs. So he left for South Africa having bagged a couple of Plunket Shield centuries and an average of 46.11 from five games. “If you don’t make runs and someone else does, they get the spot, and that’s the way it should be. It should be competitive. There are guys around making runs and if we’re not up to par and don’t perform, someone else will jump at the chance.” - NZH
