Christmas cheer for 150

One hundred and fifty people sat down to dine at what was undoubtedly the district’s largest Christmas lunch.

The forecast rain held off just long enough to settle everyone into the Sinclair Centre for Ashburton’s Christmas Community Lunch, and they came from all walks of life.

Maureen Bishop, who has a long association with the event, said some came because they lived alone, others were new to Ashburton and occasionally visitors registered. A number of people from residential care facilities also enjoyed the occasion.

“It’s open to anybody,” Mrs Bishop said. “We don’t like to think about anybody sitting at home alone at Christmas.”

Sixty-five people gave up their time to help with the event, and many others made donations.

“The response has been amazing, this has cost $500, because of people’s generosity, Mrs Bishop said.

And diners were served a Christmas lunch with all the trappings, turkey, ham, lamb and beef, new spuds and carrots, peas and corn, stuffing, cranberry sauce and gravy.

A full range of dessert options followed.

The volunteer crew had spent time on Tuesday decorating the hall and laying the tables and the cooks started work at 9am yesterday.

Santa paid a visit later in the afternoon, and handed out gift baskets.

But the volunteers’ day was not over – a mountain of dishes awaited them in the kitchen.

Rain pushes back restrictions

Mid Canterbury will remain in an open fire season for at least the next fortnight.

After earlier predicting the countryside had dried out enough to see fire restrictions in place by Christmas, Ashburton’s principal rural fire officer Don Geddes said rain this week had alleviated the fire risk enough to hold off putting restrictions in place.

Mr Geddes said the forecast for the coming days was for more rain so the fire risk remained at a moderate level around the district.

“Quite a reasonable little rain fell in the weekend and there’s more forecast for the coming days,” he said.

“It’s enough to certainly drag our level down to where I think it’s going to be safe enough.”

He said Christmas Eve’s warm weather was likely to be the last hot day for a few

days, with no traditional hot, nor’west summer days in the current forecast.

“It’s going to be a fairly cool week right through, with temperatures around the mid-teens to 20s,” Mr Geddes said.

While that might be good news for volunteer rural firefighters over the Christmas break, it wasn’t such good news for farmers and holidaymakers.

Even though fire restrictions were not in place, anyone lighting a fire still needed to take

extreme care and keep a close eye on the weather forecasts so that they don’t get caught out by sudden wind changes.

Wind changes fanning fires and embers into areas they shouldn’t be – like rows of trees – had already occurred a number of times this summer, prompting call-outs to the district’s rural volunteer firefighters.

The possibility of fire restrictions being enforced will be looked at again on January 6.

Shots fired By rEBEcca Quilliam Police are still searching for at least two people after shots from an airgun and a paintball gun were fired at members of the public in Hamilton on Tuesday.

The incidents happened about 7pm, Senior Sergeant Pete van de Wetering said.

In the first incident a woman who had been visiting her grandmother was about to get into her car which was parked in a driveway, when a paintball gun was fired at them from a passing vehicle.

“It just missed her and just missed hitting the 71-year-old lady,” Mr van de Wetering said.

The woman saw a white, older model sedan driving from the scene.

Just minutes later and a short distance away, an air rifle was fired from a passing car at a man standing outside Pizza Hut. He was shot in the back and suffered a minor injury, Mr van de Wetering said.

Police believed the same shooters were involved in both incidents.

“It’s very suspicious ... the localities are very close to each other and the timeframes are within minutes.

Ashburton College 2013 head girl Finau Fakapelea delivering one of her trademark speeches in a year that has dramatically changed the young woman.

he story that has led to the Finau Fakapelea of today is nothing short of extraordinary.

Ashburton College pupils now do not need to look far for inspiration if they have a shadow of doubt about putting their hat in the ring for top student role at the school.

The Finau of today is mature, years ahead of her age, organised, inspired, driven and a tower of mental strength – and to boot she now holds the mantle as the first Polynesian head girl.

But rewind to a time before the 18-year-old’s life dramatically changed when she was crowned head girl at a Year 12 prizegiving last year, and Finau was in a place far from where she is now.

“When I started college I wasn’t the most active person, I was probably quite slack, especially in Year 10 when I was sick a lot and spent a lot of time out of school,” she said.

In Year 11 things started to get better as she realised the importance of NCEA and the following year she decided to have a shot at becoming the Red House captain.

But pleas from pupils and teachers to go for head girl were persistent.

After one of her trademark humorous speeches and some realistic promises she was catapulted into the lead role, although at first

it seemed somewhat daunting.

This year has changed her life.

Vouching for her fellow pupils, representing the school at countless events, writing youth-focused columns for the Guardian and working part-time while trying to keep on top of her school work. It consumed her – she hardly had a moment to herself.

Sometimes she only had one lunch hour free a week.

“I definitely learned a lot about time management,” she joked.

“But really, there are a lot of things that get thrown at you that you don’t expect in the role and everyone is relying on you, it isn’t until you step back at the end of the day and think, wow I was strong to get through that.”

Finau’s growth has seen her accepted for a Bachelor in Radio Broadcasting and Communication at CPIT for the next three years at least – a career that will suit her bubbly character and love of talking.

Although she says she has a long list of people to thank, it is her mum Mele and dad Liuaki who have worked day in and day out in low paid jobs to provide the best for their only daughter.

“I remember they used to take me potato picking and they said to me you don’t want to come down this path, that showed me the possibilities in life and if you don’t want to succeed,” she said.

An Ashburton cyclist is fed up with courier drivers in Allenton blocking cycle lanes.

Ian Lennie says up to three times a week motorists along Harrison Street, near the Allenton Shopping Centre, park in the newly painted cycle lanes, forcing him to jump off his bike and walk it along the footpath.

And he says courier drivers are the worst offenders.

“What do you do? You can’t swerve out on to the road into the path of cars, you have to get off and walk it down the footpath,” Mr Lennie said.

“I do mention it to them from time to time, but they say to me where else are they supposed to park?”

Mr Lennie has cycled the route along Harrison Street to work for years, and found in the past drivers had often parked in the path of cyclists.

at the end of October their behaviour still hadn’t changed.

“It’s really clear now that it’s a cycle lane so they shouldn’t be parking there.”

Mr Lennie said it usually happened about 5.30pm, but he also raised concerns for Allenton and Ashburton Intermediate pupils who were common cyclists in the area.

cil environmental monitoring manager Rick Catchpowle said parking officers and police could issue infringements for stationary vehicle offences.

“Council is not aware of this situation and we are clearly disappointed at this particular courier driver’s actions. We encourage cyclists to make complaints to the courier company when they see it happening.”

Courier Post Timaru branch manager Wayne Rennie said he could not comment on the complaint.

The new cycle lanes on Harrison Street were painted late October after school pupils in the area asked the Ashburton District Council to extend the lanes located on Walnut Avenue to improve cycle safety in the area.

The quiet of Lake Clearwater village only gets slightly disturbed by the engines of motor boats and jetskis racing across the adjacent Lake Camp but if you want to get away from any noise, Lake Clearwater is your place.

The lake at the top end of the Rangitata River is a wildlife reserve, so engine-powered boats (and dogs) are not allowed near Lake Clearwater.

This creates a terrific sanctuary for animals and humans alike. The shallow waters heat up quickly over summer, making it ideal for a swim outside the camping ground.

The lake is about 1km wide and 5km long and with winds coming down from the mountains, make it a perfect spot for windsurfers and kite surfing.

Early in the morning, before the wind picks up, you can see the trout jumping out of the lake, laying down the challenge for anglers to have a go.

Experienced fishermen say the lake is difficult to fish, but because you can move around the entire lake, you can always find a spot with the wind in your back for fly fishing.

Youngsters will probably be more drawn to Lake Camp, only a few minutes’ walk from the bigger sister lake, with its wooden diving pontoon where teenagers congregate while jetskis and speedboats race around in the background.

Lake Camp often attracts large numbers of visiting youngsters who head up the valley to have some fun and party, away from parents and police.

Their presence and actions are not always appreciated by the older hut residents and visiting families who come for beauty and the natural peace.

With two lakes though, there is enough space for everyone to enjoy their own holiday without annoying others.

And if you get bored with staring at the water, the road towards Mt Potts Lodge and the backdrop of the Lord of Rings movies offers restless visitors even more glorious New Zealand vistas.

With all this splendour in our own backyard it is a shame not to plan wee trip past Mt Somers.

Pilgrims swamp Bethlehem Thousands of Christian pilgrims from around the world have packed the West Bank town of Bethlehem for Christmas celebrations, bringing warm holiday cheer to the biblical birthplace of Jesus.

The heavy turnout, its highest in years, helped lift spirits in Bethlehem as leaders expressed hope that the coming year would finally bring the Palestinians an independent state of their own.

“The message of Christmas is a message of peace, love and brotherhood. We have to be brothers with each other,” said Latin Patriarch Fouad Twal, the top Roman Catholic cleric in the Holy Land, as he arrived in town.

Excited tourists milled about the town’s Manger Square, stopping in restaurants and souvenir shops and admiring a large, illuminated Christmas Tree. Marching bands and scout troops performed for the visitors in the streets, and on a stage next to the tree.

Will Green of New York City, along with his wife, Debbie, and

their 2-year-old daughter Daphne were among the crowds of people who greeted Twal’s motorcade as he entered town from nearby Jerusalem.

Green said that being in Bethlehem for Christmas was a dream come true. “All the stories that we grew up with. It’s here.

It’s part of our life. We heard them in the family, school and church. This is the birthplace,” he said.

Green slowly pushed a stroller and his wife held their daughter as they followed a crowd toward the Church of the Nativity, built on the site where Christians believe Jesus was born.

Palestinian dignitaries greeted Twal at the entrance of Bethlehem. His motorcade crawled through the town’s narrow streets as he stopped to shake hands and greet the throngs of visitors. It took him nearly 90 minutes to make the short trip to celebrate Midnight Mass at the Church of the Nativity compound.

Hundreds of people packed the compound for the service.

Ice traps tourists Tourists on an Antarctic-bound cruise liner will spend Christmas awaiting rescue after the ship became wedged in thick sheets of sea ice. The ship had been on a multi-day tour from New Zealand to visit several sites along the edge of Antarctica. But the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) received a distress call on Christmas morning, notifying the rescue co-ordination centre that the ship was trapped in ice and would need help. It is not known how long the ship has been unable to break free from the ice floes.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton, and Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh were among the dignitaries in attendance.

In his homily, Twal addressed Abbas, telling the president he

prays for a “just and equitable solution” for the Palestinians.

Twal, himself a Palestinian, also expressed sympathy for the plight of the Palestinians, particularly families with relatives imprisoned by Israel or those who have suffered as a result of the conflict with Israel.

UN investigators discovered a mass grave in a rebel-held city in South Sudan, the United Nations said, as a possible opening occurred for negotiations to avert civil war in the world’s newest country where ethnic violence has erupted.

In New York, the UN Security Council voted unanimously to beef up its peacekeeping force in South Sudan. It condemned targeted violence against civilians and ethnic communities and called for “an immediate cessation of hostilities and the immediate opening of a dialogue.”

The government, meanwhile, announced that its military forces had taken back another key city, Bor, from the rebels.

Big spend ahead of Christmas Erin Bishop

s I walked through town on Tuesday afternoon I couldn’t help but chuckle to myself.

Walking towards me was a dad and two children, with a bright pink shoe shop bag in dad’s hand.

My pick was dad taking the kids shopping to find mum’s Christmas present.

It was Christmas Eve and it was at the last minute, but at least it was done and mum’s probably very happy today with a new pair of shoes on her feet, or a new handbag over her shoulder.

Many of those Christmas presents we received yesterday probably contributed to seeing the money spent this Christmas soar to huge heights.

In South Canterbury – which takes in Ashburton and Timaru – a whopping $6.13 million was spent during the first three weeks in December. That was a $2.2 million increase on the year before.

For Canterbury as a whole the total was $235.6 million ringing through the tills.

That’s a lot of money – a lot of money to come up with all of a sudden.

It’s a figure I didn’t contribute much to. This year I did the bulk of my Christmas shopping during the year, and my bank balance is thanking me for it now.

It’s a good practice to get into, particularly if you’re a parent.

1 Tbsp olive oil 1 onion, chopped 2 cloves garlic, crushed 1 carrot, peeled and grated 1 stalk celery, finely chopped 1 1/2 tsp mixed herbs 2 slices bread, made into breadcrumbs 1 egg 1/4 cup tomato sauce, plus extra for topping Mashed potatoes to serve Steamed broccoli to serve 500g beef mince Serves 4

1 ■ Grease a 12 cup muffin pan and divide the mixture between the cups, then smooth the tops with the back of a spoon. You can spread a spot of tomato sauce on top of each one with the spoon before placing them into the oven to bake.

■ Bake for 20 minutes. Serve with tomato sauce, mashed potatoes and steamed broccoli.

Group one performer Le Choix looks good Recent signs have been encouraging for a successful return to racing from the former top three-year-old Le Choix.

“I really think he’ll run well and it’s a strong, competitive field and he’s up against it a bit, but as long as he does some good

John O’Shea has been confirmed as the new trainer for Sheikh Mohammed’s Darley Australia, replacing Peter Snowden.

O’Shea has been the front runner since Snowden announced his intention to step down after the 2014 Sydney Autumn Carnival.

He will run Darley’s Sydney stable, while a foreman will be appointed to handle the Melbourne arm, which is currently overseen by Snowden’s son Paul.

O’Shea has been training since 1999 and led in the first of 18 group one winners when Shot Of Thunder won the 2002 Toorak Hcp at Caulfield.

The trainer recently travelled to Dubai to meet Sheikh Mohammed, who runs a global racing and breeding operation spearheaded by Godolphin in Europe.

“Sheikh Mohammed recently met John O’Shea in Dubai and John was able to appreciate that he will be working for a horseman with a thorough understanding of the thoroughbred business,” the sheikh’s bloodstock adviser John Ferguson said on behalf of his boss.

“Sheikh Mohammed confirmed that following Peter Snowden’s decision to move on from Darley next year, his horses will continue to be in good hands.”

The Ashburton Public Library have some changes to their opening hours over the holiday period.

Water conservation measures are used to even out demand and enable residents to continue to enjoy reasonable use of water for gardening and other non-essential purposes.

Ashburton District Council advises residents connected to Council water schemes, that “Level 1- alternate day” water conservation measures are in place until further notice.

Water conservation measures apply to any use of water from a hose connected to a Council water supply, including garden irrigation systems.

Ryder, Guptill promise big bang start Many faces are different, but the momentum will be with New Zealand when they start their ODI series against the West Indies at Eden Park today.

The tourists have a clutch of players who weren’t involved in the disappointing 2-0 test series loss; New Zealand have nine changes. That many alterations says something about confidence in the broadening base and the tailoring of players to certain forms of the game.
