By Myles Hume Lonely Mid Canterbury youth are stuck in a bind between feeling isolated but being too ashamed to tell anyone, local organisations say. Ashburton Youth Council chairperson Sara Kircher says loneliness is nothing new to the district’s young people, but the fear of admitting it exacerbates the problem. Her comments come after a Statistics New Zealand survey found 18 per cent of people aged under 30 have felt lonely at least some of the time during the past month, even though more people were becoming connected through technology and social media. Although it was difficult to know if the relatively new survey revealed a trend in young people, overseas research had found more and more young people felt lonely nowadays. Ms Kircher, who attends Ashburton College, said loneliness was something youth would never admit, but it was evident around Ashburton. “It’s definitely not spoken about, it’s one of those topics that not many people like to talk about because it’s something they feel that people will judge them on.” Ms Kircher said most youth today connected via text or Facebook, but she insists events such as those held by the youth council, which can be poorly attended, would help boost self-confidence and create new relationships. “Some people don’t take up the opportunities we have out there ... it’s up to people to make the first step,” she said. Safer Ashburton general manager Kevin Clifford said “it’s hard to connect when you’re not connected”. He said Safer Ashburton was undertaking research for the Ministry of Social Development, looking into bullying. “It’s a bit early to say what we are hearing from the research, but I’m sure sometimes if you are

bullied or ostracised you can feel lonely, and we are seeing some of these people reporting these sorts of feelings.” The Guardian has found cyber bullying is an issue in the community, and experts believe bullying over the phone or on social media can lead to vulnerable people becoming more isolated. Mr Clifford said the local organisation ran confidence-building courses such as Cactus, which helped build the self-esteem of 36 youth in Mid Canterbury each year. Although he did not know the ins and outs of loneliness, Mr Clifford said joining community groups or sporting clubs would help water down feelings of loneliness. “I’m not an expert in this area, but joining these sorts of things, it may break down things that lead to loneliness,” Mr Clifford said. “If you have high self-esteem and a higher contribution you will challenge and put yourself out there more.” The Statistics New Zealand study also found 16 per cent of respondents between the ages of 30 and 64 felt lonely, while only 11 per cent of those over 65 believed they were lonely, both higher than the youth rate. Ms Kircher said if anyone felt lonely, not to hesitate telling a friend, parent or a teacher about it.

By Sue Newman New Zealand’s past and its future stood side by side, shoulder to shoulder in Ashburton yesterday. Along with thousands of New Zealanders who gathered in hundreds of ceremonies around the country, they marked Anzac Day by remembering the sacrifices of those who fought in wars past and by nurturing the hope that one day there would be an end to war. Ashburton College students speak to a large crowd at yesterday’s Anzac Day civic service.
To see more or purchase photos service personnel were joined by civilians young and old to remember New Zealanders who had fought and died in wars on foreign soil. They remembered in warm autumn sunshine that was a far cry from the muddy trenches of war, where death stalked and for many hope died.
Ashburton’s civic service in Baring Square attracted a large crowd to watch the dwindling number of returned and service personnel march along with fire, police, cadet forces and members of a range of youth organisations. Dozens of wreaths were laid at the Baring Square Cenotaph
before minister David Brown prayed for those who were carrying the lifelong affects of war, those who suffered in body, heart and mind. “The price of war is not paid when the guns cease. There are those whose faith in human kind has been weakened and those who must go softly all their days.” Anzac Day was not just about those who had made sacrifices in the past, it was also about those who continued to make sacrifices in modern wars, Mr Brown said. Ashburton College head boy Kane Olsen spoke of the importance of the red poppy as a sym-
bol of remembrance and head girl Finau Fakapelea said it was important to remember those who had died as the people they were. The people who gathered to remember on Anzac Day came together as different people but they were joined as one, remembering for one cause, she said. As the New Zealand flag was lowered during the playing of The Last Post the large crowd stood in a silence that would have been impossible to imagine during war, the old remembering and the young asking why. • See also P4, P6, P15
