Police officers attacked The assault of a Waikato police officer on Christmas night is the fifth serious assault against a police officer in the past week. The Waikato attack happened as an officer followed up a boy racer complaint, while five people have appeared in court in connection with another brutal Christmas Day attack on two Northland police officers in which one officer was knocked unconscious and nearly tasered. Western Waikato area commander Inspector Paul Carpenter said five youths in a car were identified as those involved in the attack in Huntly and a 17-year-old man believed to have been the driver - fled the scene on foot but was located outside a James Henry Street address about 10pm. “That address and the one behind had separate parties going on with several intoxicated people inside and outside the properties. “As our officers were arresting the 17-year-old he began to active-
ly resist the officers and a crowd from both parties converged on the patrol car.’’ Mr Carpenter said as one officer tried to calm the crowd the second officer got the offender under control and placed him in the back of the patrol car. “About this time a large male has run at one of the officers and king hit him from behind, knocking the officer to the ground as the crowd surrounded the patrol car. “The uninjured officer activated his Officer Safety Alarm while his dazed colleague managed to get into the patrol car. The officers then retreated from the advancing mob and reinforcements were dispatched, Mr Carpenter said. Both parties were shut down as officers from Hamilton and a dog team arrived. The injured officer was then taken to a medical centre and treated for grazing and a cut above one eye.
Mr Carpenter said police would not tolerate such attacks and those caught assaulting police officers would face the full brunt of the law. “This type of behaviour is not only cowardly, it is totally unacceptable. “Here we have two police officers working Christmas Day helping to keep the public safe, responding to a 111 call from the public, who are then set upon by a large intoxicated mob.’’ Mr Carpenter said police believe they know the identity of the constable’s attacker and further arrests are likely. In a separate incident, five people have appeared in court in connection with the attack on two Northland police officers in which one officer was knocked unconscious and nearly tasered. The two officers were hospitalised after the attack by a group of youths in Dargaville. One had fired his taser twice in a bid to fend off
his attackers. Pepper spray was also used to subdue the mob. One woman allegedly used a brick as a weapon and tried to shoot an officer with his own taser after it was taken from him. When she was unable to fire it, she smashed it. In the Christmas Day attack, the two police officers were punched to the ground then kicked after responding to a call from churchgoers who saw teenagers damaging letterboxes and street signs about 8pm on Tuesday. Police had followed the youths to a house on Tirarau Street where a party was under way. Party-goers became aggressive and the officers were assaulted. One officer was knocked unconscious and as the second officer attempted to protect him, he was kicked in the head and suffered facial bruising. Police were assisted by the local fire brigade. men and two women - on charges ranging from intentional damage, assault on police and escaping custody. Five of the accused, aged between 17 and 28, appeared in Whangarei District Court yestermorning. Three were remanded in custody. A 16-year-old boy charged with wilful damage is expected to be referred to police youth aid. Police say more arrests are likely. Both injured officers were taken to Dargaville Hospital, placed under observation and treated for their injuries. They were released shortly after midnight. Whangarei/Kaipara police area commander Inspector Tracy Phillips said police were still piecing details of the incident together. “We’ve still got all of the witnesses to interview - including the two police officers who weren’t in a state to be interviewed last night.’’ Ms Phillips said the incident was first attended to by a solo officer who then called for backup when the situation escalated. -APNZ
Chilly weather and the odd drift of rain kept crowds down at yesterday’s Ashburton Boxing Day races, but that did nothing to stop the hundreds who turned out having a great time. From early morning there was a steady stream of cars into the Ashburton Racecourse carpark with people determined to set up camp in prime viewing spots. Some were ready to roll by 9.30am and had set up for the day; others established camp and went home for more warm clothing. But regardless of whether they watched the on-track action from the comfort and shelter of a marquee or simply stood around the boot of car, the carpark racegoers were generally a well behaved lot. With alcohol limits firmly in place within the main area of the racecourse, there were few opportunities for bad behaviour. In spite of the chill, the day had all the hallmarks of a great family day out.

Bargain hunters hit shops

If you were after a bargain then Ashburton’s big box retailers were the places to be yesterday. Shoppers turned out in their thousands in search of post Christmas bargains, with some retailers reporting crowds waiting in the Boxing Day chill for shops to open. And when they did, most who had been patiently waiting made a bee-line for items already on
their shopping lists. By 9.30am most stores were well into the swing of their big sales day, with happy shoppers leaving laden with household items and for others, gifts that would be stored away until next year. While many had done their homework and came with a list of must-haves, others said they were happy to browse, picking up whatever caught their eye or
seemed like a good buy at the time. Cheap television sets, laptops and electric shavers were hot ticket items at one store, but at others the range of items keeping eftpos machines humming was wide ranging. The one thing all stores had in common were queues. Early morning they were short but as the day wore on a five or six person wait was not uncommon.
When Mostaza heard his family was heading away to Lake Clearwater for their summer holiday, he was not going to miss out this time. The ginger cat is usually looked after and fed by neighbours over the summer holiday, however he had plans to spend it with friends and family, away from home this year. Sneaking into the family caravan and hiding under the bed, Mostaza’s owner Lyndal Lane, her father Brian Early and daughter Amelia, 16, took the caravan and their cat on the 50 minute journey, over shingle and down a steep bank – completely unaware Mostaza was planning to spend the break with them. After rushing in and out of the caravan and setting it up for the holiday, Ms Lane then returned to her Ashburton home the same day on December 12 to find Mostaza was missing from home. “He never goes too far away from home and he’s always round when we feed him, so I was a bit worried about him,” Ms Lane said. Four days on and the Lane family’s fears continued to grow as they searched the neighbourhood for their sixyear-old cat. However, it was a “doubtful” suggestion from Ms Lane’s mother Daph that Mostaza might be in the caravan at the Lake Clearwater holiday spot that prompted some action. “Mum suggested on Saturday that maybe he was in the caravan, so on Sunday Harriet

’
(daughter) and her grandad went up to have a look to see if he was there.” Opening up the caravan, Harriet, 15, searched high and low until she discovered her beloved cat peering from underneath the bed, sweltering in the 30 degree Celsius heat without food or water. “I was relieved, I almost started crying because I had made flyers and when people started asking about him I had to leave because I was tearing up,” Harriet said. With plans to not return to the caravan until two weeks after they dropped it at Lake Clearwater, Ms Lane said it was fortunate they made the trip or it could have been a sad ending. “I’m just so happy we didn’t turn up on holiday with a dead cat in our caravan, it’s good to have him back,” Ms Lane said. She said she would be going back to Lake Clearwater with disinfectant to clean the caravan, holding on to the hope Mostaza did not shred her new curtains. Mostaza is back at home a little lighter but recovering well.

Round Table membership rising after years of decline By Gabrielle Stuart Membership of the Hakatere Round Table club has doubled over the past few years, and after a successful Christmas tree fundraiser this year the club is hoping for a strong future. The Hakatere club hit an alltime low four years ago, with just five members, but refused to follow other clubs in the area in closing.
Since then it has seen membership grow to 11, and has had two of its members receive the National Tabler of the Year award for outstanding work to the club. Social member Ian Raymond has been with the Hakatere club for almost 20 years, and is glad to see it growing again. He said he was reluctant to join the group at first as he was running his own business, working “daylight to dark with very
little time on the weekends”. “It took a couple of years to convince me to join, but I made time in the end. Often we seem to take a lot out of the community but we don’t seem to give much back. And all work and no play makes a pretty grumpy bugger.” Mr Raymond said that one of the highlights of his time in the club were the annual lake camps, where the Round Table worked with the police, schools
and other local clubs to run a camp for 30 to 40 local intermediate school students. “It was for kids who were struggling at school but still trying. We’d take them fishing or canoeing or out in a jet boat, and you’d get kids that would come along and say I can’t do that, I can’t do that. So you’d tell them to sit on the bank and watch for a while, and before long they’d be asking if they could come along. We had
of them come along to the club.” He said the club held fortnightly meetings at members’ homes, and that anyone interested was welcome to come along. “We’ll talk about events coming up but it’s pretty relaxed, it’s not all business. Those of us who drink will have a couple of drinks, and it’s more social.” Mr Raymond said that many Round Table clubs across New Zealand had closed recently, mostly due to declining mem-
bership. “Members have grown older, and some have shifted away or left for family reasons. People are busier, and there’s not the same commitment to community there was 10-15 years ago.” The Ashburton Round Table Club closed because of lack of members about 10 years ago, followed by the Christchurch Round Table, which was the first to be established in New Zealand.

Ashburton Holiday Park manager John Wood prepares for the festive season, saying camp site bookings are looking strong for the summer break.
Café sets NZ smokefree trend By Sophie Ryan Enjoying a coffee and some lunch in the sun this summer just got more pleasant for customers at one groundbreaking Whangarei café. The Tarewa Park café has recently become the first completely smokefree café in the country. The outdoor dining area in the park has become smokefree as part of the Whangarei District Council policy to make all parks, playgrounds and sports grounds smokefree. During summer, Tarewa Park will be a destination for visitors and families, and café manager Stephanie Saramet said it

Those kids will all be men now, and we’d love to see some
was the perfect opportunity to embrace the council’s smokefree parks policy. “It’s a much nicer dining experience when you can enjoy a nice meal outdoors in the sunshine and fresh air and even better when you don’t have someone at the next table smoking,” she said. All three Northland councils have taken steps to create a smokefree future for the region. Kaipara District Council was first in 2008 with smokefree playgrounds, extending the policy to cover sportsgrounds and parks in 2012. Whangarei council implemented a smokefree policy in September 2010 for Whangarei playgrounds and sportsgrounds with neighbourhood parks going smokefree in September 2011.
Far North District Council voted to implement a smokefree policy this year for playgrounds, sportsgrounds and parks to go smokefree from last September. Northland District Health Board smokefree adviser Bridget Rowse said: “This is all about the kids, being smokefree role models for them, and showing them that smoking is not a ‘normal’ activity.” Cancer Society Northland health promoter Jim Callaghan said the policy was a step in the right direction towards a smokefree New Zealand. A University of Otago survey found that 98.5 per cent of New Zealanders were in favour of making all public spaces smokefree. - APNZ by David Fletcher
More and more holidaymakers are seeing Mid Canterbury as an ideal spot to pitch their tents and relax over the summer break. Camping grounds across the district are seeing healthy bookings for the Christmas break as families look to take advantage of the many opportunities the district has to offer. Both Mt Somers camping grounds, the holiday park and the domain, are fully booked over Christmas and New Year, with many families choosing to have their Christmas dinner at the camping ground rather than at home. Several other camping grounds are either full or looking to ramp up numbers in the coming days, most putting it down to the locality of rivers, lakes and the affordability of camping. All 77 powered sites and 50 regular tent sites at the Rakaia Holiday
Park are full from Christmas throughout early January with owner Robyn Jackson saying they had attracted more families over the years with its children’s programmes and new mini golf course. Mid Canterbury’s strong camping numbers correlate with a New Zealand Tourism Industry Association survey that found almost half of New Zealanders are packing their bags and travelling over summer. Ashburton Holiday Park manager John Wood said his Tinwald motor camp had seen “progressive” numbers of the years, his camp site numbers slowly building on top of last year and looking to boom in the February. He put the influx down to more people looking to spend their holidays camping which is an affordable option in the tough economic climate. But with Mid Canterbury’s proximity to rivers and the development of Lake Hood, Coronation Holiday
Park owner Tania Dalzell said she has seen more people, mainly from Christchurch, immerse themselves in a Mid Canterbury summer. “It’s just been a gradual thing, the last couple of years they have started hosting regattas at Lake Hood and people become more aware. Most people are from Christchurch and they realise it’s nice and close so they bring their boats and jet-skis along,” Ms Dalzell said. Mt Somers Holiday Park owner Mandy Gordan said holidaymakers were realising the potential Mid Canterbury held. “It’s only 30 minutes away from Ashburton yet many people that come to us say they feel like they are miles and miles away from anywhere. “We have got the lakes that are just 20 minutes up the road, where people can take their boats or go fishing. There’s also the community hall, the domain is just next door and people can go walking up Mt Somers,” she said.

Fish stories no tall tales By Myles Hume Local fishermen have been backing up their tall tales at the South Rakaia Hotel this season, bringing back some of the biggest salmon pulled out of the Rakaia river in years. With a season that has harked back to the booming seasons of the 1990s, the South Rakaia Hotel has seen members of its
freshwater fishing club walk in with salmon that have weighed consistently above seven kilograms with some reaching up to nine kilograms. The pub weighed fish caught out of the Rakaia River and recorded them in their book with pub owner Lara Reihana saying those weights have been dwarfing those of recent years. “It’s definitely stronger, I’m just looking at 2011 and we didn’t
get weights of eight and nine kilograms until January and February,” Ms Reihana said. With the heaviest salmon weighing 24.5 pounds (11kg) in Mid Canterbury this season, North Canterbury Fish and Game officer Dirk Barr said the Rakaia River was consistent with the Rangitata and Waimakariri Rivers which had already shadowed recent seasons. Ms Reihana said it appeared
the season was lulling at the moment with many of the big hauls caught in November, however she believed fishermen were still searching for the trophy fish. “We haven’t seen people in here all weekend, they must all be out looking for the big one. Also because they have got time off now they will be out and about.” However, when a king size salmon was caught Ms Reihana said the pub was abuzz with sto-
ries and excitement but the top spots remained a secret. “Everyone comes in and wants to take a photo, everyone wants to come have a look and they rally round.” Mr Barr said Fish and Game had seen a strong run of salmon in the Rakaia River throughout November, with many of the fish feeding well in the open ocean before spawning in the lakes via the Rakaia River.
With many of the large fish also being of high quality, he had confirmation of several salmon weighing in excess of 25 pounds (11kg). Mr Barr expected a second surge of salmon to come through in late January and throughout February which is consistent with recent years. He anticipated more large salmon to be pulled out of the river after Christmas.

Busy Methven mum happy with community board’s successes Mum-of-two Liz McMillan has got her youngest child off to school but is busier than ever, finds Guardian reporter Susan Sandys.
Photo Kirsty Graham 121212-KG-073
Methven Community Board chairperson Liz McMillan says it has been a positive year for the board.
One would think Methven Community Board chairperson Liz McMillan would have more time up her sleeve now that her youngest child has started school. But the mum of two is busier than ever. Not only is she involved in the community board and associated projects such as neighbourhood support, but she is soon to become a Methven Playcentre supervisor and is a successful Intimo clothing party plan seller. Liz recalled many highlights from her past year on the community board, and believed the board’s strength was in its makeup of “everyday people”, very much representing Methven’s community. She believed many other community boards often had a majority of retired and semi-retired people or big business owners. “I think we have worked quite well as a team,” she said. She was pleased to end the year with the Hobbs Road walkway project getting underway after so many delays. The walkway was dug out in front of residents’ houses, but turned into an eyesore as the installation of shingle was delayed over winter due to bad weather and volunteers not being available. “It was frustrating because it didn’t go to plan,” she said. Now shingle installation was underway and the remainder of Pudding Hill Road would hopefully be undertaken early next year. It was good to see new equipment going into the Methven Railway Reserve playground, and that the Ashburton District Council had purchased a rope tower for older children, to be installed in February. “Just seeing how many people go and use the park is awesome,” Liz said. It was also good to see many using the second access point to Methven Primary School, after it opened at the end of last year. Another successful project the community board had been involved in was a caravan waste unit, after the money for installing it had initially “fallen off the end of a spreadsheet”. “We have wanted to do that for ages, but
there’s been a few hiccups.” It had all in all been a positive year, and even a dog park project which never went ahead ended up having a beneficial outcome in some respects. While the board earlier decided a dog park on council-owned land on Dolma Street would be a good way to tidy the site up, the cost proved too expensive, so it was instead leased to the Methven Volunteer Fire Brigade to graze sheep. “It’s a shame but on the other hand the area has been tidied up, it looks neat and tidy and the fire brigade has benefitted as well,” Liz said. The community board is currently working in conjunction with Neighbourhood Support in Ashburton on getting a group up and running in the town, and was wanting to hear from those interested in being group leaders and looking for a co-ordinator. Establishment of an emergency response plan was underway, and the board had met with organisations such as search and rescue, St John, the fire brigade, police and the Methven Heritage Centre. Liz was crucial in setting up the Methven Farmers’ Market in Methven, but after four summers it will not run this year. She said it had been a great thing to have in the town, but now many of the producers were busy at other locations. Liz is mum to seven-year-old Floyd and five-year-old Estella, who has just started school this year. She said it was making her life a little easier, dropping her children to just one location each day. However, she will remain a familiar face at Methven Playcentre, where she hopes to begin as a supervisor in 2013. While she will be enjoying the Christmas break with friends and family, she will also be undertaking assignments to get her training completed in time. Liz is an Intimo clothing party plan seller, and it is an interest of hers which is going well in Methven, with the clothing being popular with many in the town and further afield.

Holiday road toll up to three Boxing Day OUR VIEW
By Brendan Manning
shopping or races?
A fatal crash in Taumarunui yesterday has taken the holiday road toll to three. A 58-year-old man was killed in a single-vehicle crash shortly after 1pm. The accident occurred five kilometres north of Taumarunui on State Highway 4. No one else was in the vehicle at the time. The man was from Taumarunui. Three people have now died on the roads since the official holiday road toll began at 4pm on Christmas Eve. It finishes at 6am
on January 3. Last year 19 people died and 381 were injured in crashes during the official Christmas holiday period. A young man was killed following a serious car crash in Southland early yesterday morning. The crash happened 200 metres east of the Lorneville-Dacre highway, north of Invercargill, about 6.30am. Senior Sergeant Dave Raynes said a 24-year-old man was found dead at the scene. He was the sole occupant of a Honda saloon. Police closed part of the highway while a scene examination took
place. It was unclear what had caused the accident. No other vehicles were believed to be involved and the man’s name was yet to be released. Meanwhile, a 71-year-old woman became the first holiday period fatality after dying at the scene of a two-car crash in Hamilton on Christmas Day. The elderly woman was a rear passenger in a car that collided with a ute at the intersection of Te Rapa Rd and Avalon Dr about 12.35pm. Four of her family members were taken to Waikato Hospital, police Sergeant Phil Ruddell said.
Police later located a suspended driver who allegedly fled the crash site after a member of the public followed the fleeing car and helped police track its 26-year-old female driver to a Pukete address. Both the woman and the driver of the other car would be interviewed after receiving medical treatment. Mr Lynam said it was too early to determine fault or whether charges would be laid over the crash. Heavy lifting cranes were brought in yesterday after a car collided with a milk tanker near Marton.

oxing Day, it’s traditionally Ashburton’s big day out at the races, but this year the crowds just weren’t there. Was it the weather or was it competition from the host of shops in town hosting post Christmas sales? Probably a bit of both, but for the Ashburton Trotting Club, the smaller gate must have been a disappointment. The lower numbers, however, did nothing to detract from a fine day’s racing for the punters who did turn up or for those who just wanted a day out of the house after a frantic Christmas. Generations of Ashburtonians can count that race day as one of the enduring memories of their youth. For some attending the big day at the track has become something of a ritual. It’s an event they mark on the calendar each year as a time to catch up with old school friends. Many of those long-term race day attendees can count the progress of their years in the progress of their personal race day behaviour. They’ve graduated from the party area where the order of the day was once to get as trashed as you could as quickly
as you could, to becoming race day attendees who now come with their own children and spend the day enjoying a family day out. The big race day is now a very different beast. It was well overdue for change as attitudes to drinking changed. And to the Ashburton Trotting Club’s credit, it has tackled the issue of drunkenness and loutish behaviour head-on. It’s introduced a raft of changes that have everything to do with imposing controls on what goes on in the car park and on the concourse. And this year was no exception in terms of a well behaved crowd. Yes, the numbers may have been down, but those who were there, were on their best behaviour – even in the notorious back stalls of the car park. The new era of Boxing Day races has kept the best of the past, in that it still sees boot parties and mini-marquees set up track side and it still allows youthful gatherings in the car park, but the tolerance level of what is and what is not acceptable has shifted. And that makes it a day that everyone can enjoy.
Soggy weather for Ellerslie races Tangi under way By Matthew Theunissen The rain flowed as freely as the champagne at the Boxing Day races at Ellerslie Racecourse, but the crowds weren’t deterred by the thought of a soggy fascinator. Thousands turned up to the event, which has been an institution on Auckland’s social calender for over 150 years, and is as much - or more - about the fashion than the horses. “Maybe I’ll see a horse, maybe I won’t,” said Christchurch woman Deborah Truesdale, who looked stunning in an extravagant Trelise Cooper jacket “with a bit of extra tszujing” and pants by Christchurch designer Gillian Melhop. Many turned up to take part in the coveted Fashion in the Fields competition, with a mouth-watering prize pool prompting some truly amazing outfits. Head judge Claire Hahn, who won the event in 2006, said it was like winning a “mini Lotto”, with prizes including a trip to Honolulu, an LCD television, and a new wardrobe.
‘
A lot of people got really glammed up today, it’s their one big chance for the year to just go a little bit crazy with their fashion
’
“I won a brand new Mercedes and a whole host of other prizes and it really is an absolute joy.” She said people’s outfits got better every year. “Today we’ve seen a lot of peplums, a lot of lace and pretty prints. But we’re definitely returning to an old-school art of millinery so less feathered facsinators and more structure and architecture which is really exciting for the art of millinery.” Also on the judging panel was Romanian tennis star Sorana Cirstea, ranked 27th in the world, who was here for next week’s ASB Classic.
“It was fun judging because I’ve never done it and it’s such a relaxing process because no-one’s watching and no-one’s judging - you are the one doing it so it was fun,” she said. Cirstea, recognised as one of the most beautiful women in sports by MSN, was impressed by what she saw. “It’s amazing because it’s something different and everyone’s really putting a lot of effort into dressing up and dressing according to the event. I think it’s great and I think it’s an amazing tradition and I’m very honoured to be a part of it.” New Zealand Herald marketing executive Rachel Wilkins, who is running the Viva Powder Room, said there were some outstanding outfits at the track. “A lot of people got really glammed up today, it’s their one big chance for the year to just go a little bit crazy with their fashion,” she said. The crowd of didn’t seem to mind the rain much, and it was more than welcome by Kiwi horse the Hombre, which won the 1200m Hallmark Stud Newmarket Handicap.
“It’s unfortunate for the club for it to be wet like it is but for our horse it was helpful,” said trainer John Bary said. “It played into our hands because he’s a front-running horse so once he got in front the horses from the back struggled to overtake it in the wet.” Bary didn’t even know what the prize money was, but he said it didn’t matter. “It’s all about the glory.” For most of the punters Boxing Day was the only time of year they gambled, so their betting tactics were often unscientific, if creative. “I chose based on the jockeys’ outfits and the horses’ names,” said Paul Hay. “There was one called Sweet Suitor, which I thought I’d go for ‘cause he was wearing the same colour as me. “It did say under the thing that he didn’t really have a chance but I thought you’ve got to bet for the underdog.” Organisers estimated up to 12,000 people attended the day’s event, down from up to 20,000 in years when the weather was good. - apnz

burial today. “It’s a very sad time for the family - not only for the family but for the people who live there and the residents who have holiday homes there. “Everyone’s in grieving over there. The family, all of them, not only the mother and father - all of the relations there are grieving.” Police said the death of a child was tragic at any time but was particularly poignant given the death occurred on Christmas Eve. Taupo road policing group Senior Sergeant Fane Troy said police were still investigating the incident and speaking to witnesses. It had not yet been decided whether charges would be laid, he said. - apnz
By Brendan Manning The grieving family of a toddler killed in a driveway run over on Christmas Eve are preparing for his burial today. Three-year-old Te Haeata Pitiroi was struck by a car on a shared driveway in Hatepe village near Taupo at 8.55pm on Monday. Taupo police said it appeared that a woman was leaving a property down a shared driveway on Te Mako Mako Lane when her car struck Te Haeata. Attempts to revive him at the scene were unsuccessful. A relative of Te Haeata, who declined to be named, said she was at the tangi yesterday and the family were preparing for the

A search and rescue helicopter looking for a missing tramper in Nelson has been targeted with a laser. The helicopter was using night vision equipment on Tuesday to search for Alistair Levy, 54, of Palmerston North, who left Nelson on Saturday morning for a tramp in the Mt Owen area. Nelson police Sergeant John Maxwell said when the helicopter was returning from the late night search a laser light was shone into the aircraft. The pilot and crew located the property the laser was shone from and police have since arrested the suspect. Mr Levy was due to meet family in Christchurch on Monday but failed to arrive. Five teams of searchers, including a dog and specialist cavers are in Kahurangi National Park continuing the search, covering the Bulmer Tarn, Mt Owen, Branch River and Sunrise Peak to the Owen River Valley. The cavers were brought in to search the cave systems in the area. Police said Mr Levy’s car had been located at the start of the track at Courthouse Flat, however, his yellow Bauer Tornado mountain bike is yet to be located. Weather in the search area remained favourable yesterday, Mr Maxwell said. While Mr Levy was an experienced tramper who had completed numerous solo tramps, he was not carrying a locater beacon. Police said a number of people had come forward who were in the area at the time, but police still wanted to speak to anyone else who has been tramping in or around Mt Owen since Saturday. - apnz

The accident happened about 3am, blocking State Highway 3. The collision sent the tanker into a ditch. The car’s driver suffered serious leg injuries and had to be cut out by fire crews. Motorists in the lower North Island were being urged to be patient following reports of heavy traffic on State Highway 1. Police Shift Commander Sergeant Andy Dow said the congestion appeared to be linked to Boxing Day events and nice weather. Sergeant Dow urged motorists to drive to the conditions and be patient. -APNZ

Take care of our rare birds Ashburton River visitors are being reminded to keep their vehicles and dogs away from the Ashburton River bed over the holiday season. Among endangered birds nesting on the riverbed are black fronted terns, opposite Trevors Road. Forest and Bird Ashburton branch member Val Clemens said the colony, of 80 or so birds, had been protected by high flows along the north bank. “But as the river drops and people have the time, there is a concern they will be disturbed,” Mrs Clemens said. She said the terns were often seen flying over the river. “And it is a treat to watch their skilful aerobatics as
they dive to hawk for insects or pluck a small fish from the water.” With weed encroachment, predation from cats, dogs, stoats, ferrets and hedgehogs, as well as floods and disturbance from people and vehicles, life on the river was “perilous” for the birds. The birds could be highly strung and dive bomb intruders. “If you do see a bird nesting, walk away quietly and quickly. Keep dogs on a lead if near the river, and please avoid areas where there is obviously a colony.” There were other species nesting on the river as well, and even on areas

that looked empty there were often banded dotterel or oystercatcher nests which were hard to spot amongst the stones. Additionally there were the thousands of black billed gulls nesting on the river in the vicinity of the State Highway 1 bridge, which had already sustained one disturbance from a four-wheeldriver crushing eggs in November. “If you want to watch the birds, do so from a distance and use binoculars. These birds are our godwits. We may not have kiwi, tuatara or kakapo in Ashburton, but we do have very rare species on our braided rivers,” Mrs Clemens said.

“When you’re out walking keep your dog on a lead and remember, just because you have your dog tied up, doesn’t mean that it can’t get free. It’s your responsibility to ensure that it doesn’t,” she said. DoC Kaitaia spokeswoman Carolyn Smith said the dogs had been picked up by a council animal control officer in the area where the kiwi were found, and had been roaming at the time the birds were killed. While it was highly likely the dogs were responsible, the owner could not be prosecuted because it could not be proven. No one had seen the dogs attack the kiwi and the bodies were too decomposed to get dog DNA from their feathers. Ms Smith said uncontrolled dogs were the number one killer of kiwi in Northland. “Over the past few years, there’s been an intensive campaign to alert people to this fact. Despite this, some people are still choosing to not keep their dogs under control, resulting in continued slaughter of kiwi. It’s not the dogs’ fault, they’re acting out of instinct. “Remember that kiwi can be living in your hedge, in pastureland, even in pampas and scrub on the side of the road. And all dogs can be kiwi killers,” she said. -APNZ

The discovery of two kiwi mauled by dogs is a stark reminder of the need to keep dogs under control at all times, a Department of Conservation ranger says. The dead kiwi were found on the Hihi Peninsula, near Mangonui in Doubtless Bay, where a group of land owners set up the Whakaangi Landcare Trust in 2003 to control predators, conserve kiwi and restore native forest. Ranger Irene Petrove said a shocked and upset Whakaangi woman alerted DoC’s Kaitaia area office to the deaths, which an autopsy found had been caused by dogs. The dogs were traced to a Hihi resident who was at work when his animals slipped their collars and travelled at least 4km to the Hihi Peninsula. Ms Petrove said dogs could kill large numbers of kiwi in a short time. “Dogs are a major threat to kiwi and other wildlife. It is the owner’s responsibility to keep their dogs under control. Control means that an owner knows where their dog is and what it is doing at all times,” she said. Ms Petrove urged dog owners to book their pets into a kennel when going on holiday.
A 16-year-old is in critical condition in hospital after a car left the road and rolled down a bank on Christmas morning. A 17-year-old received moderate injuries in the crash on a rural road south of Carterton at 5.30am. Masterton police Sergeant Mia Wilton said the vehicle had left the road after failing to negotiate a right-hand bend at the top of a rise on Waihakeke Rd. The Mitsubishi Lancer had travelled down a bank and into a paddock, rolling several times before coming to rest. The two youths were both from Martinborough. The police serious crash unit were investigating, and it was too early to tell whether alcohol or speed were factors. Wellington Free Ambulance spokesman Chris Matthews said a 111 call, believed to have come from a local farmer, was received around 5.30am. Emergency services found one youth inside the vehicle and another walking around. The 16-year-old was freed from the car and taken to Wellington Hospital by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter in a critical condition. The other was taken to Wairarapa Hospital in Masterton by ambulance, where he was treated for moderate injuries. - APNZ

Killer left chilling note An ex-convict killed two firefighters with the same calibre and make of military-style rifle used in the Connecticut school massacre after typing a note pledging to burn down his neighbourhood and “do what I like doing best, killing people,” police said as another body, believed to be the gunman’s missing sister, was found. William Spengler, 62, who served 17 years in prison for manslaughter in the 1980 hammer slaying of his grandmother, set his house afire before dawn Christmas Eve before taking a revolver, a shotgun and a semi-automatic rifle to a sniper position outside, Police Chief Gerald Pickering said. The death toll rose to three as police revealed that a body believed to be the killer’s 67-year-old sister, Cheryl Spengler, was found in his fire-ravaged home. Authorities say Spengler sprayed bullets at the first responders, killing two firefighters and injuring two others who remained hospitalised in stable condition, awake and alert and expected to survive. He then killed himself as seven houses burned on a sliver of land along Lake Ontario. Police recovered a militarystyle .223-calibre semi-automatic Bushmaster rifle with flash suppression, the same make and calibre weapon used in the elementary school massacre in Newtown, Connecticut, that killed 26, including 20 young children, Pickering said. The chief said it was believed the firefighters were hit with shots from the rifle given the distance but the investigation was incomplete. “He was equipped to go to war, kill innocent people,” the chief said. The two- to three-page typewritten rambling note left by Spengler did not reveal what set off the killer or provide a motive for the shootings, Pickering said. He called the attack a “clear ambush on first responders”. He declined to reveal the note’s full content or say where it was found. He read only one chilling line: “I still have to get ready to see how much of the neighbourhood I can burn down, and do what I like doing best, killing people.”

Firefighters battle a blaze after they were let back in in Webster, New York. A gunman ambushed four volunteer firefighters responding to an intense pre-dawn house fire, killing two and ending up dead himself, authorities said. Inset: William Spengler. Pickering said it was unclear whether the person believed to be Spengler’s sister died before or during the fire. “It was a raging inferno in there,” Pickering said. A next-door neighbour said Spengler hated his sister and they lived on opposite sides of the house. Roger Vercruysse said Spengler loved his mother, Arline, who died in October after living with her son and daughter in the house in a neighbourhood of seasonal and year-round homes across the road from a lakeshore popular with recreational boaters. As Pickering described it and as emergency radio communications
on the scene showed, the heavily armed Spengler took a position behind a small hill by the house as four firefighters arrived after 5.30am to extinguish the fire: two on a fire truck; two in their own vehicles. They were immediately greeted by bullets from Spengler, who wore dark clothing. Volunteer firefighter and police Lt. Michael Chiapperini, 43, driving the truck, was killed by gunfire as the windshield before him was shattered. Also killed was Tomasz Kaczowka, 19, who worked as an emergency dispatcher. Several firefighters went beneath the truck to shield themselves as an off-duty police officer who was passing by pulled his vehicle
alongside the truck to try to shield them, authorities said. The first police officer who arrived chased and exchanged shots with Spengler, recounting it later over his police radio. “I could see the muzzle blasts comin’ at me. ... I fired four shots at him. I thought he went down,” the officer said. At another point, he said: “I don’t know if I hit him or not. He’s by a tree. ... He was movin’ eastbound on the berm when I was firing shots.” Pickering portrayed him as a hero who saved many lives. The audio posted on the website RadioReference.com also has someone reporting “firefighters are down” and saying “got to be rifle or
shotgun — high-powered ... semi or fully auto.” Spengler had been charged with murder in his grandmother’s death but pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of manslaughter, apparently to spare his family a trial. After he was freed from prison, Spengler — a felon who wasn’t allowed to possess weapons — had lived a quiet life on Lake Road on a narrow peninsula where Irondequoit Bay meets Lake Ontario. That ended when he left his burning home, armed with his three weapons and a lot of ammunition. “I’m not sure we’ll ever know what was going through his mind,” Pickering said. - AP

Syrian rebels make more gains in north Syrian rebels fully captured a northern town near the Turkish border after weeks of heavy fighting and attacked a regime air base in a neighbouring province, activists said. The air base is in Aleppo province, where opposition fighters have already captured three other large military bases in recent months. Rebels have also laid siege to the international airport in the city of Aleppo, Syria’s commercial capital, and launched an offensive on the police academy near the city. With steady rebel gains across the north, President Bashar Assad’s regime is having increasing difficulty sending supplies by land to Aleppo province, especially after rebels cut a major thoroughfare from Damascus. It is just another sign that the opposition is consolidating its grip across large swathes of territory in northern Syria near the Turkish border. In another blow to the regime, activists said that Mohammed Adnan Arabo, a member of Syria’s parliament has left the country and joined the opposition. Ahmad Ramadan, an executive council member of the opposition Syrian National Council group, and other activists said Arabo arrived in Turkey on Tuesday. He said the regime’s hold on power is deteriorating and rebels are besieging military bases for weeks until they either take over or negotiate with local army commanders to surrender. He added that some regime forces are being diverted to the capital to fight there. “The regime cannot protect its bases and also cannot send forces to support troops under siege,” he said. Over the weeks, rebels fighting to overthrow Assad have also been able to take the battles into the capital Damascus, Assad’s seat of power, where the southern neighborhoods are witnessing almost daily clashes between troops and rebels. The big successes began in midNovember, when rebels captured
Aleppo’s Regiment 46, a large military base, carting off tanks, armoured vehicles and truck-loads of munitions. Three weeks later, they captured the Sheik Suleiman base near the provincial capital of Aleppo and days later they took an infantry base in the city. Last week, they captured an army technical regiment near Damascus’ international airport but were pushed back in a counter attack. The army command said in a statement that the regiment’s commander was killed in the battle. The rebels have also brought the battle to areas around Damascus international airport where some flights were cancelled earlier this month because of the intensity of the fighting. One of the biggest blows came in Damascus on December 12 when a suicide attacker blew up his vehicle outside the Interior Ministry, killing five and wounding many, including Interior Minister Mohammed al-Shaar. The government denied at first that al-Shaar had been wounded until it got out when he was brought last week to a Beirut hospital for treatment. It was the second injury the minister suffered after being wounded in a July 17, bomb inside a highlevel crisis meeting in Damascus that killed four top regime officials, including Assad’s brother-in-law and the defence minister. The rebel takeover of Harem, a town of 20,000 in northern Idlib province, was the latest in a string of recent rebel successes. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the rebels captured Harem in the early hours of Tuesday. Mohammed Kanaan, an Idlibbased activist, said the last post to be taken was the historic citadel, which overlooked the town. The army had turned the citadel into a military post. “Harem is fully liberated now,” Kanaan said via Skype. He added that as the rebels pounded army posts and checkpoints in Harem, the troops withdrew to the citadel that later fell in the hands of rebels. -AP
Christmas Day storms blamed for 3 deaths in US Tornadoes jumped across the US South, and, along with brutal, straight-line winds, knocked down countless trees, blew the roofs off homes and left many Christmas celebrations in the dark. Holiday travellers in the nation’s much colder mid-section battled treacherous driving conditions from freezing rain and blizzard conditions from the same fastmoving storms. As predicted, conditions were volatile throughout the day and into the night with tornado warnings still out for some parts of Alabama. The storms were blamed for three deaths, several injuries, and left homes from Louisiana to
Alabama damaged. In Mobile, Alabama, a tornado or high winds damaged homes, a high school and a church, and knocked down power lines and large tree limbs in an area just west of downtown around nightfall. WALA-TV’s tower camera captured the image of a large funnel cloud headed toward downtown. Rick Cauley, his wife, Ashley, and two children were hosting members of both of their families. When the sirens went off, the family headed down the block to take shelter at the athletic field house at Mobile’s Murphy High School. “As luck would have it, that’s where the tornado hit,” Cauley
said. “The pressure dropped and the ears started popping and it got crazy for a second.” They were all fine, though the school was damaged. Hours after the storm hit, officials reported no serious injuries in the southwestern Alabama city. Meanwhile, blizzard conditions hit the nation’s midsection. Earlier in the day, winds toppled a tree onto a pickup truck in the Houston area, killing the driver, and a 53-year-old north Louisiana man was killed when a tree fell on his house. Icy roads already were blamed for a 21-vehicle pile-up in Oklahoma, and the Highway Patrol there says a 28-year-old woman
was killed in a crash on a snowy US Highway near Fairview. The snowstorm that caused numerous accidents pushed out of Oklahoma, carrying with it blizzard warnings for parts of northeast Arkansas, where 25 centimetres of snow was forecast. Freezing rain clung to trees and utility lines in Arkansas and winds gusts up to 48 kp/h whipped them around, causing about 71,000 customers to lose electricity. Blizzard conditions were possible for parts of Illinois, Indiana and western Kentucky with predictions of 10 to 17.5 centimetres of snow. An apparent tornado caused
damage in the west Alabama town of Grove Hill, located about (130 kilometres north of Mobile. Mary Cartright said she was working at the Fast Track convenience store in the town on Christmas evening when the wind started howling and the lights flickered, knocking out the store’s computerised cash registers. “We’ve had some pretty heavy weather,” said Cartright in a phone interview. “Our cash registers are down so our doors are closed.” Trees fell on a few houses in central Louisiana’s Rapides Parish but there were no injuries reported, said sheriff’s Lt. Tommy Carnline. -AP

By Michael Brown In a sport in which the player with the most weapons normally wins, Marina Erakovic knows she needs to add more to her arsenal. The Kiwi No 1 tennis player has enjoyed a decent year. She climbed to a career-high ranking of 39, played in her second WTA final, won two WTA doubles events and banked US$315,228 in prize money. But niggling injuries, her ongoing struggles at grand slam events – she has not gone past the second round since 2008 – and dreadful first-round defeat at the Olympics means she looks back on 2012 as only “alright. Erakovic wants more than alright. She wants to be a top-20 player and, at 24, knows she needs to develop her game. She knows she needs to possess more than a good serve and forehand to jump from her present ranking of 66 and some of that might be in evidence at the ASB Classic, which starts in Auckland on Monday. “The last couple of years I have been trying to hit the ball bigger, trying to move better, be fitter and make the forehand and serve bigger, she said. “They are still things I am working on. I think next year I will probably look at taking the ball a little earlier and try to get into the net a little bit to finish those points off. It’s just getting stronger and hitting bigger. “I felt I was lagging behind in everything, from movement to especially the mental side. Nothing can prepare you for matches like matches. It’s that simple; just going out there and playing the tennis. The realisation of needing to hit bigger was probably when I started working with [coach] Chris Zahalka. He was really keen

on that. At first I didn’t really understand, but I get it now. Even when you practice, you really want to be hitting it like you want to be hitting it in a match. Erakovic normally prepares for the ASB Classic in Auckland but spent three weeks this month with Zahalka in Florida. A good run at Stanley St will see her surpass US$1 million in career earnings and become the first New Zealander since Brett Steven in the 1990s to achieve the feat. She has banked US$989,318 since turning professional in 2006 and, with the ASB Classic offering US$235,000 in prize money, could pass the figure next week. It would require a vast improvement on her past three outings in Auckland which saw her bundled out in the first round but she has the potential to at least match her semifinal appearance of 2008. She will also be among the favourites in the doubles considering she is teaming up with Brit Heather Watson and the pair have won both WTA tournaments they have played together. The draw for both the singles and doubles will be made on Saturday, and Erakovic will hope to avoid some of the top seeds like world No 4 Agnieszka Radwanska, Julia Goerges (18), Yanina Wickmayer (23), defending champion Zheng Jie (26) and even former world No 2 Svetlana Kuznetsova who has slipped to 72 after a series on troubling injuries. She has the ability and experience to compete with players of that calibre and hopes she now has the firepower to do it more often. “As every year passes, I enjoy it more and learn more, she said. “I even value it more as I get older. - APNZ
TV2, 8.30pm, PG (2002) On the cusp of marrying into one of America’s most esteemed political families, a chic New York fashion designer (Reese Witherspoon, below) heads down south to revisit her hillbilly heritage and sort out the small matter of securing a divorce from her redneck high school sweetheart (Josh Lucas). Sadly, Witherspoon is given little scope to utilise the sort of over-the-top antics that made Legally Blonde such a treat, but this has its moments.

LEO (Jul 24th - Aug 23rd) Relationships are very much in the spotlight as Mars in Aquarius stirs up your longterm relationship, helping you to clear the air. The same may be true of other dayto-day relationships in which you may be involved. The focus is platonic, friendly and idealist. Romance is also a possibility with a desire to enjoy life and be a pleasureseeker.

The loose strokeplay of Dilshan and Samaraweera was repeated by vice-captain Angelo Mathews (15) whose off-drive landed in the hands of Mike Hussey at second slip off the bowling of Siddle at 5-99. Prasanna Jayawardene (24) edged a short ball to third slip off Johnson and Dhammika Prasad was beaten for pace next ball and caught behind for a duck as Johnson found himself on a hat-trick. - AAP

CANCER (Jun 22nd - Jul 23rd) Romance, or a love relationship, may be especially intense today. A long-term relationship could be transformed over time. Be careful of a budding romance, though, as it could turn out to be quite businesslike and may have strings attached. Don’t get involved if it doesn’t feel right. The newly positioned Mars in Aquarius may encourage you to start an online business.

week’s first test in Hobart, claimed 4-63 from 14 overs and bowled with tremendous pace up around the 145 km/h mark. Kumar Sangakkara top-scored with 58 and, in doing so, became the 11th player in test history to reach the milestone of 10,000 runs. Sri Lanka won the toss and Aussie debutant Jackson Bird (2-32) struck in his second over when Dimuth Karunaratne was caught behind for five.

McClenaghan looks the goods There are no guarantees McClenaghan will play against South Africa. It’s uncommon for sides to play two left-arm seamers, with Trent Boult likely to lead the attack along with Doug Bracewell and Chris Martin, but McClenaghan has taken his limited opportunities well. It has probably helped that he has played under a captain who is equally aggressive, because Brendon McCullum has told him to bowl with fire and not be afraid of leaking runs. McClenaghan took three wickets the first time he put on a black cap for a warm-up game, then opened with a wicket maiden in his first Twenty20 international – a rarity in the shortest format of the game – struck South African
By Michael Brown It’s been said Mitchell McClenaghan has a touch of blue steel about him, a look made famous by the comedy Zoolander, and not just because he’s a parttime model. The 26-year-old has made a striking start to his international cricketing career and has now been rewarded with a call-up to the New Zealand test squad for the upcoming two-test series against South Africa starting on January 2. He comes in as a replacement for the injured Tim Southee, who is sidelined for at least a month with a thumb injury, and also benefitted from the ongoing injury problems experienced by Mark Gillespie.
‘Mitchell is a talented and exciting young fast bowler who has the ability to unsettle batsmen with his pace and bounce’ - coach Mike Hesson captain Faf du Plessis with a fiery delivery and impressed with his pace and hostility. “Mitchell is a talented and exciting young fast bowler who has the ability to unsettle batsmen with his pace and bounce,” coach Mike Hesson said. “We are confident if the opportunity arises during the tour he will perform well during the test series.” McClenaghan will probably always go for a few – it’s the way
he approaches his cricket – and his raw statistics don’t make for particularly compelling reading. He has played 26 first-class matches and snared 76 wickets at 39.03 and this season has 14 wickets from his four Plunket Shield matches at 34.85. But it is often the intangibles that are more important. The Aucklander is not short of confidence and regularly bowls in the mid-140kmh bracket and hopes he
is a direct replacement for Southee in more ways than one. “Unfortunately Timmy’s thumb wasn’t right,” McClenaghan said ahead of this morning’s deciding Twenty20 international against the Proteas in Port Elizabeth. “He’s been a big part of the test side for the last 18 months and has been going really well. That will be a big loss. “But I’m really looking forward to the opportunity to step into his shoes if I get the chance. I believe I can take wickets and be a lot more threatening. I can be used in short spells and hopefully I will be a substitute for Timmy in the wicket-taking department. “Most of the boys bowl at a good click but I definitely feel like I can bowl a good spell of heat and put
From the sideline
them on the back foot.” It’s a triumph for a player who once endured a dreadful run of injuries that included a fractured pelvis, three hip surgeries and a snapped ankle ligament. More recently he’s followed a rigorous crossfit training programme and diet which has seen him give up, among other things, bread and pasta. “The diet’s been massive,” he said recently. “No sugars, no breads, no nothing, really. Just good veges and broccoli, lots of broccoli. I’ve learned to love it.” Of course, South Africa’s powerful batting lineup have feasted on plenty of bowlers like McClenaghan before and it’s one of the reasons why they are the No 1-ranked test side. - APNZ

Two players scored hat-tricks of tries when the Chiefs beat the Western Force in 2007, who were they?
By Sue Newman
Give us your caption ...
Just when it looked likely that Ashburton’s Boxing Day races would be a bad day at the office for top driver Dexter Dunn, his fortunes turned when he drove Four Starzz Flash to win the feature race with a bold run in the race’s dying stages. The six-year-old entire started off 10 metres and sat well back in the field for most of the 3200 metres, allowing Stephen McNally and River Black to make the pace. For almost half the distance River Black, Samuel James and Magical Mel were settled at the head of the field until Regan Todd and Ohoka Texas laid down a challenge and moved into the lead. They held that lead until they turned for home for the final time. It was then game on with River Black returning the challenge. At the start of the Bettor’s Delight passing lane backmarker Major Mark showed his metal when with Glencoe VC and Flyover he began pushing for the lead. It was a strong run by Four Starzz Flash, however, that wrecked their hopes just as Major Mark looked to have the race tied up. Four Starzz Flash came home one-and-aquarter lengths clear of Major Mark, driven by Blair Orange, with Aimee Edmonds and Flyover five-and-a-quarter lengths back. Four Starzz Flash ran the 3200m in 3.59.5, with a mile rate of 2.04, final 800m, 58.7 and To see more or final 400, 28.2. • Race results P11 purchase photos
