Alcohol-guzzling Facebook craze ‘could kill people’

A young Ashburton man who downed a bottle of Jagermeister in one go could have been killed, health officials say.

A video has emerged on social media showing the man drinking the entire bottle in a matter of seconds as part of the latest drinking game craze sweeping New Zealand and Australia, called ‘nek nominate’.

A concerned resident alerted the Guardian to the Facebook page – called Ashburton Nek Nomination – after seeing the video, which was posted on January 17.

The video shows a young man cracking open a new Jagermeister bottle – 35 per cent alcohol and around $100 for a 1.75 litre bottle – and consuming it all in one go through a funnel.

Nek Nominate is a new social media-based game where some-

one downs a drink in one go and then nominates two friends to do the same.

But what started out as a bit of fun had become dangerous, the concerned resident said.

“It started out ... with just like a bottle of beer or something like that, but it’s getting out of hand,” the concerned resident said.

Parents needed to be aware, and warned, that the practice was dangerous and could end in disaster, he said.

Ashburton Community Alcohol and Drug Service manager Chris Clark was appalled when the Guardian alerted her to the page.

“I just can’t believe that anyone would think that was funny.

Things like that actually kill people,” she said.

“It’s just ridiculous. It’s people putting themselves at real risk of harm. There’s no way that

people should be condoning or encouraging acts like this.

“It’s excessive alcohol consumption so we would have to look at whether they are breaching the Sale of Liquor Act. She said encouraging others to do what they had just done meant they were party to it if something went wrong, which it easily could when it comes to excessive alcohol consumption.

“We know alcohol poisoning does happen and people die from it.”

The Ashburton Nek Nominate Facebook page was created on January 17 and currently has 235 members.

According to Facebook, they remove items that violate its terms such as pornography, hate speech, threats and graphic violence.

Anyone who has problems with a Facebook page can report it.

A video of a young man downing a whole bottle of Jagermeister in seconds, posted on Facebook, is causing outrage.

Aust claims bigger chunk of Anzac biscuits As a patriotic nibble, Anzac biscuits are second to none. But for years New Zealand has had a better claim to the original recipe and name. Now Australia might be able to take back the biscuit, or at least a few crumbs of national pride, after the discovery of a recipe published in a Melbourne newspaper in 1921. Until now, the first Australian-published recipe for a recognisable Anzac biscuit was credited to a 1923 edition of Mrs H W Shaw’s Six Hundred Tested Recipes. However, by picking through the National Library of Australia’s Trove website AAP has found Melbourne’s Argus newspaper printed a recipe for Anzac biscuits” on July 6, 1921.

Pope Francis is taking his place alongside the icons of American popular culture by appearing on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine, which hits newsstands on Friday.

It’s the first time the staunchly liberal rock-music bible has featured a Roman Catholic pontiff on its cover, which is typically graced by pop stars and movie idols. Pope Francis: the times they are a-changin’, reads the cover headline that borrows the title of Bob Dylan’s classic early 1960s anthem. The Argentine-born pope, who took office in March last year, has previously been Time magazine’s Person of the Year. He also made the cover of The Advocate, the respected US gay rights magazine. Monarch migration may disappear The little-understood annual migration of millions of Monarch butterflies to spend the winter in Mexico is in danger of disappearing, experts said yesterday, after numbers dropped to their lowest level since record-keeping began in 1993. Their report blamed the displacement of the milkweed the species feeds on by genetically modified crops and urban sprawl in the US, extreme weather trends and the dramatic reduction of the butterflies’ habitat in Mexico due to illegal logging of the trees they depend on for shelter. While the Monarch is not in danger of extinction, the decline in their population now marks a statistical longterm trend and can no longer be seen as a combination of yearly or seasonal events.

Dodgy meals An employee of a McDonald’s restaurant in Pittsburgh was charged yesterday with selling heroin in child-oriented Happy Meals to customers using the coded request “I’d like to order a toy.” Authorities made the arrest after an informant told them that an employee was selling the drug. Customers looking for heroin were instructed to go through the drive-thru and say, “I’d like to order a toy,” said Mike Manko, spokesman for District Attorney Stephen A. Zappala Jr. The customer would then drive to the window, hand over the money and get a Happy Meal box containing heroin in exchange, Manko said.

Flag proposal sparks divisions

Prime Minister John Key and Ashburton Mayor Angus McKay are in the same camp when it comes to changing the New Zealand flag.

Mr McKay flies the New Zealand flag in his own back yard and he flies it on the Ashburton District Council building, but it’s time, he says, that the flag’s design is reviewed.

“Yes, I quite like the flag at the moment but I think change should be seriously looked at.

Our ties with Britain are totally different now to what they were 50 years ago and we’re recognised around the world as our own nation,” he said.

Mr Key has said he would consider changing the national flag, holding a referendum as part of this year’s general election and that prospect of a referendum pleases Mr McKay. New Zealand had changed dramatically over the past few decades and was now a multi-

cultural nation with a personality that was no longer a mirror of Great Britain and that meant choosing a new national identity made sense, he said.

Kay said he would continue to hoist it up the flag pole to show he’s a patriotic New Zealander.

For a sports person, nothing can beat the feeling of watching your country’s flag flying at a medal ceremony and knowing it was your efforts that put it there says champion shooter John Snowden.

“I’m quite attached to our flag.

I’m maybe not the most patriotic person but I’d hate to see it changed to something gimmicky,” he said.

The current flag might be conventional but it was also timeless and it certainly generated a feeling of pride when it was flown at medal ceremonies after sports events, Mr Snowden said.

“You don’t want to have something you’re embarrassed about.

Our flag is what it is. I have no problem with it.”

Nationally, the RSA is opposed to any change and that view is supported by local president Malcolm Hanson.

“I shouldn’t think any change would go down too well with our members.

“It’s tradition, it’s the flag people have fought and died under,” he said.

Mr Hanson said he was surprised that Mr Key supported change and said that was likely to generate a fair bit of debate among RSA members.

While he would like to see change in the New Zealand flag, Mr Key said there were much bigger problems that New Zealand had to deal with than flag design.

However, if there was support from among his senior ministers, Government would choose the design of the flag and ask the public to vote yes or no, he said.

Call for commonsense over dining policy

Commonsense rather than nitpicking over a few centimetres of footpath should be the guideline in monitoring Ashburton’s alfresco dining policy, says Ashburton District councillor Darryl Nelson.

At yesterday’s Ashburton District Council service delivery committee meeting, the alfresco dining policy was up for debate at the request of one councillor who believed it was

The policy was about providing a cosmopoliton landscape in Ashburton and to do that the policy gave some flexibility in how the clearway was achieved and maintained, said council as-

“It’s the interpretation of what is a straight line; if it meanders a bit is it okay?”

Mr Nelson, however, thought that in looking for change in the policy, the council was trying to be too restrictive.

“If someone wants to do something in a quiet pedestrian area of town like Braded Rivers it shouldn’t be a problem. Let commonsense prevail. Overseas it works well with people and pedestrians sharing the pavement,” he said.

Extinguisher handy A milk tanker driver found himself in the right place, at the right time, yesterday. The tanker driver was among the first on the scene when a truck caught fire on State Highway One at Overdale and the driver had a fire extinguisher on board which was used to extinguish the blaze and prevent serious damage. The Rakaia Volunteer Fire Brigade was called at midday but the fire was out by the time firefighters arrived.

It might be officially called Rootbeer, but Ashburton people have plenty of other names to describe the feature colour of the Ashburton Art Gallery and Museum’s walls.

Letter writers, texters and callers in large numbers have been contacting the Guardian wanting to talk about the colour most describe as “poobrown”. Is it a joke?, some are asking, is it undercoat? most are hoping. The reality is, the colour the building’s feature

walls have been painted is here to stay.

Ashburton District Council commercial manager John Rooney is quick to point out that the colour should come as no surprise to Ashburtonians.

It’s already had plenty of exposure on the information boards that carry an artist’s impression of the complex, he said.

The colour wasn’t a random choice; it was selected by the building’s architects Warren and Mahoney and has been part of every graphic of the complex used in publicity about

the project. The only change has been to remove some of the textural element as a cost cutting measure, Mr Rooney said.

He’s surprised the colour has attracted so much attention, but believes that when it’s viewed in the building’s finished state with landscaping completed, the apparent shock factor will disappear.

While the challenging colour has attracted howls of dismay it’s also attracted some support, with some saying with the building nearing completion, the project’s knockers were running out of things to criti-

cise. A feature colour that may not be to everyone’s taste, had simply provided them with new fuel to the fire, they said.

Others took a trip down memory lane and listed a handful of other robustly coloured buildings that had been part of the Ashburton townscape over the years – a purple telephone exchange and a pink post office.

Yes, they attracted complaints at the time but weather mellowed the hue and time mellowed attitudes.

That’s what will happen with the art and history complex, they say.

Bouquets for Grim warning issued on bigger rates rise police’s ‘eyes and ears’

Ashburton police sergeant Grant Russell has handed a bouquet to three community groups he says make the work of policing the district a whole lot easier.

The people who made up the town watch teams and town centre ambassadors filled a valuable role in keeping an eye on life in Ashburton’s town centre after dark, he said.

“They’re invaluable; they’re our eyes and ears.”

The town watch car had a similar effect to a police car when it was spotted around town and that deterrent value couldn’t be measured, while the foot patrols mounted by the Town Centre Ambassadors were “magic” and simply by their presence around town they prevented crime, Mr Russell said.

“They’re a major asset to our community.”

The third arm of civilian policing came with the neighbourhood support groups that were growing in number, he said.

“They’re working the best I’ve ever seen.”

A grim warning to be prepared for a bigger rates bill has been issued by Christchurch City Council.

The city council is over budget and predicts it will be $9.4 million in the red by June.

If they can’t find another way of reducing costs, earthquake weary ratepayers could be facing a 9.3 per cent rate increase instead of the budgeted 6.5 per cent increase.

Finance committee members will consider the report on Tuesday at their first meeting for the year.

The report says the cash operating deficit remains the “main financial concern this year”.

“If the deficit cannot be found from operating savings or increased revenue in the next six months, options to fund it include increasing rates for 2014-15 by 2.8 per cent over next year’s current draft planned increase of 6.5 per cent.”

The culprits it identifies are the consents debacle and indemnity insurance, earthquake related rates remissions and

legal costs and interest costs. But finance committee chairman Raf Manji has downplayed the warning.

“It’s just really stating the obvious - if we can’t find the savings then this could result. Staff are just being prudent and advising of the ramifications of the current predicament,” he said.

“I have instructed staff that they are to keep the rates increase within the budgeted figure.

“A small amount of belt tightening will deliver significant savings,” he said.

However the news comes as no surprise to former city councillor and chairwoman of the finance committee Helen Broughton. She said it is a direct result of the consents debacle.

Crown manager Doug Martin was brought in by the Government in July after International Accreditation New Zealand (Ianz) revoked the council’s consenting accreditation.

“That $5 million for the building consent fiasco was a direct cost not planned in the council budget. I would be surprised if it could be found by savings in other areas,” she said.

Rakaia’s volunteer firefighters were called to a shed fire at Dorie on Tuesday evening. Half a dozen hay bales in a shed had caught fire at the Griggs Road property but the fire was out by the time firefighters arrived and the shed wasn’t badly damaged. The call-out was shortly after 6.15pm.

Crash witnesses sought Witnesses to a crash on Auckland Anniversary weekend which left a motorcyclist seriously injured, are being asked to come forward.

Noise camera trial A revolutionary noise camera is being trialled in Tauranga to identify trucks whose engine brakes disturb sleep during the night. The New Zealand Transport Agency is working with trucking industry organisations to achieve compliance from drivers identified by the camera as using noisy engine brakes. Smoking key-pad sparks fire call

A smoking key-pad was at the centre of a fire call-out at Ashburton Hospital yesterday afternoon.

Ashburton’s volunteer fire brigade was called to the hospital shortly before 3pm after smoke was seen coming from a security keypad beside a fire escape door on the second floor.

Ashburton Hospital general manager Garth Bateup said the fire was in the Chalmers ATR unit and some patients were moved to the opposite end of the ward due to the smell of smoke, but no one needed to be evacuated.

“Staff implemented emergency fire procedures and did a good job really,” he said.

He said the fire was discovered by people in the ward who broke the glass on the fire alarm system to alert emergency services.

Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade chief fire officer Alan Burgess said the key-pad appeared to have shorted and hospital engineering staff dealt with that while firefighters ventilated the room.

“There was an element of smoke and quite a strong smell in the ward so it was just a matter of blowing out the smoke and the smell that was there,” Mr Burgess said.

The Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade was called to deal with a small fire at Ashburton Hospital yesterday afternoon.

House prices out of control

Auckland’s housing market is now so out of control that prices are higher than Melbourne for the first time ever, according to Labour.

The party’s housing spokesman Phil Twyford said global financial services firm UBS has calculated that at the end of the December quarter, average Auckland house prices were A$648,176 (NZ$692,070), compared to Melbourne’s A$634,890.

“Thanks to our rampant housing market and overvalued exchange rate it is now more expensive to buy a house in Auckland than it is in Melbourne,” Mr Twyford said.

John ambulances and about six carloads of police starting arriving about 8.30pm and the dying fire was brought under control.

The Northland Electricity rescue helicopter touched down nearby at dusk and locals said the expert care of the helicopter paramedic and St John staff had kept the burned pair alive.

Stabilising the condition of the men took over an hour.

They were then gently loaded into the helicopter, which took off at 11.15pm to fly them to Whangarei Hospital. The younger man was later flown to Middlemore.

Shocked neighbours bound two seriously burned men in plastic wrap after a rural Northland shed in which police suspect methamphetamine was being made exploded in flames.

One of the burn victims, a 49-year-old, later died. The other Northland man, aged 26, is in a stable condition at Middlmore Hospital in Auckland.

The drama began when a loud explosion startled residents and scattered stock on lifestyle blocks near the junction of Opouteke and Takitu Rds at Pakotai, 50km north-

west of Whangarei, about 7.45pm on Wednesday.

More explosions followed and flames several metres high produced a dense pillar of black smoke from the shed and a utility vehicle which caught fire beside it.

Next door neighbour Kathy Bartlett, one of the first on the scene, described it as “like Guy Fawkes”.

The burning shed was about 30m from a house alongside the vast Opouteke Forest, where thousands of hectares of pine trees await harvest in dry summer weather.

Ashburton woman Lin Challis is not alone when it comes to having confidence preparing fruit and vegetables, according to a recent 5+ A Day survey.

Survey figures showed South Islanders were kitchen masters when it came to slicing and dicing fruit and vegetables with 57 per cent confident in their preparation, while only seven per cent lacked confidence, figures from the survey showed.

Mrs Challis loved to include fresh produce in her daily diet and always bought fresh produce but planned household meals around seasonal produce – in abundance and lower in cost.

On the flip-side, Aucklanders

were least confident with only 45 per cent confident dealing with fruit and vegetables. A whopping 12 per cent were unsure, or very unsure, of how to prepare fresh produce.

Mrs Challis said it was not a matter of preparing and cooking produce, which she enjoyed, it was planning meals that was not enjoyable.

Confidence in the kitchen was high among nationwide, with 51 per cent very confident and 41 per cent reasonably confident preparing fresh fruit and vegetables.

Women were more likely to reach for an apple or carrot, with 41 per cent eating five or more servings of fresh produce a day, while only 27 per cent of men would do the same.

Sixty-five per cent of Ki-

wis had two to three types of vegetables at dinner, while 14 per cent loaded dinner plates up with five or more different types of vegetables.

People in the upper North Island (including Waikato, Bay of Plenty and Northland and excluding Auckland) had the widest variety of vegetables at dinner compared to the rest of the country.

When a snack attack hits, 78 per cent of Kiwis chose fruit and vegetables to nibble on.

The survey, commissioned by 5+ A Day to find out about Kiwis’ eating habits, also found just over a third of New Zealanders ate the recommended five or more pieces of fruit and vegetables a day, with dinner being the meal where we eat the most fresh produce.

Giant sav recreated specially for TV show By cHris ToBiN A small piece of Oamaru history has been revisited in the town, although it could be described as big in some terms.

Long established Oamaru butchers Campbell’s Butchery made a saveloy this week that stretched longer than a cricket pitch - 27 metres to be precise.

Owner Tony Campbell said they had been asked by televi-

sion show There And Back to make a saveloy to remember an event that occurred in 1974.

“We weren’t trying to go for records; it wasn’t a competition,” Mr Campbell said of the 27m saveloy. “I think the longest sausage is 59km!”

Back in 1974 another Oamaru butcher, the late Alan Ross, of Alan H. Ross & Sons, made a 57ft (17.37m) long saveloy for a Bavarian beer fest which was

held in the town. It was a world record and television cameras came to Oamaru to film the beer fest.

Mr Ross’ son Graeme Ross, of Oamaru, helped make the saveloy also and he was interviewed for There and Back.

“I can remember making it,” he said of the saveloy. “It didn’t take too long and we loaded it on a truck for the beerfest.”

The show’s host Matt Gibb said they had got the idea for creating a saveloy after watching some archive footage from 1974.

“This clip stood out; we thought it was sort of quirky.”

The latest 27m long saveloy was made using 10.4m skins and filled them with 15kg of saveloy, all in a continuous line.

A worried father has spoken about the dangers of legal highs after his son was put on life support after having smoked a synthetic product.

Last Thursday, the 24-yearold Dunedin man smoked the legal high, Karma, and was later taken by ambulance to Dunedin Hospital in a serious condition.

His father, who did not want to be named, said his son did not know who or where he was, and had to be restrained by security guards.

“He was off the planet ... completely gone.”

His condition deteriorated to such an extent he was kept in ICU for three days on life support.

With a temperature near 40°C, his “whole body began shutting down at one stage”.

“It has affected him so badly and we realise we could have lost him,” he said.

His son was later transferred to a general ward before returning to his parents’ home “in a very sad state”.

The father was not surprised to read this week that Karma was one of five products pulled from New Zealand shelves after users reported adverse health effects.

The five brands had been previously assessed by the Ministry of Health, and in August were judged low risk enough to be sold to the public.

The other legal highs - AK47, Anarchy, Northern Lights Primo and Voodoo - appeared to contain the same active ingredient.

Karma, Anarchy and Voodoo were sold via a Christchurchbased company, Eversons International Ltd, which could not be contacted.

A spike of calls to the Dunedin-based National Poisons Centre led to the products being pulled.

While welcoming the removal of the product, the man’s father questioned why products had been sold as legal highs after they were later found to be harmful. “Someone has to take accountability.”

He and his wife had taken time off from their full-time jobs to look after their previously healthy son.

He questioned whether there was any benefit in keeping the remaining legal highs on the shelves.

“It has been horrible, horrible for all of us.”

Consultation on more permanent legal high regulations was expected to begin next month.

Online network had NZ links by martin Johnston Timing was crucial in the busting of an alleged online child sexual abuse network, New Zealand authorities say.

Six offenders were caught in the New Zealand operation codenamed Operation Hyper, media were told yesterday in Auckland.

Hyper also identified four children who had the potential to be harmed, and rescued a 6-year-old girl in the UK. “The operation required meticulous planning and execution to ensure enforcement activity did not jeopardise potential victim safety or alert suspect offenders who could warn others in their network,” said Customs Manager Border Operations Shane Panettiere.

“With greater global con-

nectivity, offenders think they can operate anonymously accessing and exchanging child sexual abuse material, but they will not go undetected.”

He said online child sexual abuse is a serious borderless crime, against which agencies join forces to actively share information and conduct investigations to protect children and target offenders.

Detective Senior Sergeant John Michael, head of Police’s Online Child Exploitation Across New Zealand unit, said Operation Hyper was a great example of domestic and international co-operation.

“A global taskforce is committed to identifying and protecting children in New Zealand and across the world from online sexual exploitation and sexual offending,” he said.

Internal Affairs’ team leader, Censorship Compliance Unit, Jon Peacock said it took a network to defeat a network.

“The agencies involved actively shared information and conducted investigations to target and arrest the offenders when the timing was right.”.

Andy Baker, the Deputy Director of the UK’s National Crime Agency, CEOP Command, said the internet knew no bounds, so international partnerships and relationships were crucial when tackling child sexual exploitation.

Operation Hyper began last June when a referral by Queensland police led to a Customs search warrant at the home of a 41-year-old man in central Auckland.

His young child was assessed by government agencies for

harm. Information gained as a result of this warrant also identified other offenders in New Zealand and the UK. Internal Affairs, police and Customs conducted simultaneous warrants on Auckland’s North Shore and in Levin, while UK police arrested a man in West Yorkshire.

As a result of these warrants another man living in the UK was identified, and in December, UK police arrested the 62-year-old, and rescued his grand-daughter from physical sexual abuse, which was also being filmed and distributed.

In New Zealand, Customs and police conducted a further search warrant at a Northland home and assessed of two young children living at the property.

In brief Close to drowning A pensioner was rushed to shore after a near drowning incident at sea yesterday morning off the coast of Maketu in the Bay of Plenty. The 70-year-old Papamoa man is believed to have suffered the bends. He was being treated at Tauranga Hospital. Emergency services were called to meet a boat bringing him in at 8.28am at Kaituna Cut.

Pollution warnings Hawke’s Bay’s District Health Board has issued pollution warnings for seven of the region’s recreational waterways. Medical Officer of Health, Dr Caroline McElnay, said on Wednesday that due to contamination, people should not swim at the sites ranging from Mahia to Ocean Beach - until further notice.

Monitoring by the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council identified high levels of E. coli and Enterococci in water samples taken on Monday, indicating excessive amounts of faecal matter in the water. - APNZ

Wandering cattle shot Several head of cattle have been shot over fears a motorist could be injured or killed in a collision with one of the wandering animals.

The cattle had been wandering onto SH47 between National Park and Turangi on Wednesday and causing vehicle accidents and near misses, the Ruapehu District Council (RDC) said.

Organised by Borough’s Home and School Committee the sale of secondhand goods drew a steady stream of parents and caregivers looking to kit out their children economically for the year.

A full range of clothing was for sale in the three-hour session – sunhats, jerseys, summer skirts, winter kilts, shoes and socks – all for good prices.

One mother was able to buy two school jerseys, slightly marked, for $20 – about half the cost of a new jersey.

Home and School chairperson Gael Franklin said secondhand uniforms were sold on behalf of the parents, three times a year – at the start of the year, at the end of term one and at the end of term three.

The uniforms were priced by the seller and all money returned to them.

The Home and School Committee only received money if the uniforms were donated to the committee and then sold.

$200m quake payout The Ministry of Education is to receive a $200 million payout from insurer Vero for quake damage to Christchurch schools allowing rebuilding to pick up pace, ministers said yesterday.

Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee said the settlement was one of the largest insurance payouts in New Zealand’s history. Late last year Mr Brownlee and Education Minister Hekia Parata announced a 10-year $1.137 billion programme to rebuild and renew 115 schools in greater Christchurch.

The Department of Conservation’s (DOC’s) five-year battle plan will double the amount of conservation land protected through the use of 1080.

Hailed as DOC’s largest-ever

species protection programme and dubbed the ‘Battle for our Birds’, it was unveiled by Conservation Minister Nick Smith.

“Our native birds are in decline and the kiwi will not exist in the wild for our grandchildren unless we do more to protect them,” Dr Smith said.

Farmers Against 1080 (FATE) spokeswoman Mary Molloy said she was appalled that Dr Smith had also claimed 1080 did not kill birds. DOC’s own records showed that between 2 and 80 per cent of specific bird species were killed by 1080 drops, she said. - APNZ

Fraudsters have fleeced thousands of dollars from Dunedin’s Chinese business community, police warn.

As part of the modus operandi, the scam artists have approached Dunedin takeaway shops with a business proposition, Detective Neville Aiken said. That business proposition involved supplying meal orders to employees working in factories, he said. At least two businesses within the city’s Chinese community had been fleeced of thousands of dollars, he said.

Gun sales boom in Canterbury

By Max Towle Applications for firearm licences in Canterbury have soared in the past five years, and are expected to rise even further.

There are now 33,500 firearm licence holders in Canterbury, 16 per cent of the national total.

Since 2009, the number of new firearms applications filed in Canterbury has risen by 31 per cent.

Final figures have not yet been determined, but so far police say that in 2013 there were 1350 first-time applications filed for

firearm licences - up from 1220 in 2012. They expect the 2013 number to increase when numbers are finally determined.

Of those applications, Canterbury police estimated that 99 per cent were accepted.

Police predict that could rise to 1650 applications per year by 2015.

Gun City owner David Tipple said there was a simple explanation for a boom in business.

“It’s because there’s more game to hunt,” he said.

“Right across Canterbury, where there’s a habitat, there’s

been an increase in deer and game and people want to pick up a gun and hunt.”

Mr Tipple said pest-control was also a reason for more guns being sold. He said semi-automatic rifles were customers’ gun of choice.

“They’re the biggest seller the .22 long rifles. Most people are interested in the militarystyle semi-automatics.”

Director of the University of Otago’s NZ Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies Kevin Clements found the numbers “disturbing”.

Women in quake rebuild

By Shelley RoBinSon In a bid to beef up resources for the Christchurch rebuild, women are being offered free training in trades.

With the rebuild of the city still yet to hit its peak and thousands of women left unemployed after the demise of the central city, Christchurch Institute of Technology has tapped into an underutilised resource by offering free training to women.

Estimates say between 35,000 to 45,000 workers will be required for the rebuild but at the moment we are in the low 20,000.

More than 130 women have already taken up the offer in carpentry, electrical engineering, welding, painting and decorating. CPIT predicts an overall enrolment of 500 women this year under the scheme.

CPIT is absorbing the fee, between $950 through to $2500 depending on the course, because it see it as a way of attacking both unemployment for women and providing more workers for the rebuild, said CPIT head of department for food, hospitality and trades, Karen Te Puke.

“Hospitality and retail sector were really affected in the earthquake and these were high areas of employment for females. Although some businesses have returned, it is no where near to the level of pre-earthquakes.

“The rebuild presents a great opportunity for these women to retrain in an area that has been very male orientated - there is absolutely no reason why a woman could not be an electrician, plumber, painter or builder,” she said.

The idea has received the nod of approval from the industry.

Said Miles Construction director Alastair Miles: “It’s a great move - the industry has definitely been lacking female participation. “ He said although women were involved in the industry it was typically not on site.

“We don’t currently have any women on-site but in saying that we have not had any CVs through from women - but it should absolutely be encouraged,” he said.

Council of Trade Unions Canterbury Rebuild and Recovery coordinator Paul Watson said an estimated 12,500 to 13,000 women lost jobs in the central city after February 22.

He welcomes the initiative from CPIT. “That is excellent - it’s exactly what we need. Too many women lost their jobs and were not entitled to receive an unemployment benefit because they had a partner who earned too much.

It’s been hard for them,” he said.

He said more initiatives like this are required to help the rebuild.

“That’s deeply worrying because those guns are the same kind that Jan Molenaar used in 2009,” he said.

“You don’t need to use a semiautomatic rifle in hunting.”

Prof Clements said semi-automatic weapons should not be available to the general public.

“Of course some people use them for recreational reasons, but semi-automatic guns have also become the criminal weapon of choice.”

Said Mr Tipple: “Semi-automatics are necessary in hunting. If you’re only going to get

a fleeting glimpse at an animal on the run, you’re going to want more than one shot.”

“Plus, there’s no recoil.”

A Canterbury police spokesman said they did not have a view on the number of semiautomatic weapons being sold.

“All firearms owners are required to comply with the provisions of firearms legislation and licensing, regardless of the type of firearm.”

The police firearms office would not provide information on how many guns were stolen in 2013.

Lorde ill before Auckland gig Lorde battled sickness to take the stage at Wednesday night’s triumphant homecoming gig in Auckland, according to social media.

Tweets indicated the 17-year-old double Grammy winner was late on stage at Silo Park because she was throwing up.

During her performance her manager Scott MacLachlan praised the singer on Twitter, saying: “Bravest girl in the world. If you only knew NZ.” Two of his followers asked for an explanation but there was no update.

About two hours later, a tweet from the Splore music festival account re-

vealed the singer had been sick before the show.

“Lorde was late on stage because she was vomiting. What a pro!” the tweet said.

The nearly sell-out crowd was nonethe-wiser, with her show receiving rave reviews.

Mr MacLachlan did not go into detail about what was wrong with Lorde, simply saying she had been unwell.

“These things happen and she’s had a busy three or four days, and also just got off a flight. She’s definitely feeling better. It was an incredible crowd and an incredible show.” - APNZ

Patience, respect needed Coen Lammers EDITOR

T

he cycling debate has raised its ugly head again and demonstrates how immature many motorists and cyclists in this country are.

The discussion flared this week when coroner Ian Smith suggested that hi-vis vests should be compulsory and to introduce a mandatory one-metre gap between vehicles and cyclists.

The Government’s negative response triggered an emotional public debate across the airwaves and websites. I followed the debate with special interest because I spend over 50,000km each year in my car but also try to get on my road bike two or three times a week.

It has struck me that both sides have adopted a rabid, aggressive, them-and-us approach to the debate. The language and abuse hurled at each other has been appalling and shows why many people using our roads should grow up a bit.

New Zealand roads are wider than most streets around the world but for some reason cyclists and motorists here are unable to co-exist like in other countries with significantly narrower roads and more traffic.

I knew something was wrong in this country, when biking along a wide Dunedin road back in 1990. A car pulled up beside me and I was shocked to hear the driver yelling that I should “get off MY f…ing road’’.

I thought that sentiment may have softened a bit over 24 years, but clearly many motorists still feel that cyclists are pests that need to be eradicated.

Many talkback callers refer to incidents when motorists have cut off a cyclist or bike riders ignoring the road rules. However, from my experience those instances are extremely rare and unhelpful to have a constructive debate.

Thankfully the majority of road users look out for each other, but until our national and local Government dot down a few more cycle lanes, anyone on a bike is vulnerable and needs to protect themselves.

Compulsory hi-vis vests seem heavy-handed, but smart cyclists make themselves visible, especially around twilight. A little respect and patience both ways would achieve a lot more than Government interference.

YOUR VIEW Council costs The ever evolving story of the Art Society’s new clubrooms continues to demonstrate loudly and clearly the costs to the district of a council, despite promises, that just does not listen.

It is loudly promoted along with the Sports Centre, foisted upon the ratepayers when all that was required and provisionally approved was a replacement for the community pool.

This in itself would have been of little concern had not the College proven to be so greedy.

What has compounded this folly was allowing the mayor to align himself and some friends to pursue this path and commit and spend large sums of money.

I would suggest even at this stage that our roads are a classic example of misspent funds, rated for, yet misappropriated to this private venture.

torships are there to be manipulated.

Their limited funding allows naming rights but no further financial commitment.

Fund raising itself was far from honest, a promised public $5 million was never cash in hand and the payment never confirmed.

Every step has been rushed and vital information kept from those who will be expected to pay for this white elephant.

Despite requests courtesy of your column no forward costs are available nor are any indications given of proposed entry fees and public usage fees given.

The Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin should be a warning, a classic example of a council led by the nose by some self- interest groups persuaded by incorrect costs and now, each year other costs come to light.

Another council that does not listen and never did and the consequences are expected to be carried and met by the very people who were ignored.

Road sealing I would like to comment on the council’s choice of trades people or company that is currently sealing our roads.

The East Street sealing hasn’t even had the road marking done and is already lifting and is a very uneven surface, not to mention Moore Street which is uneven and lifting.

Why are we playing rates to companies that are not efficient in their jobs. When will we achieve better standards from the decision makers.

Why our children need to fail Belinda Milnes

T

oday there’s a whole new language to describe overprotected, molly-coddled, cotton wool kids – and their parents.

Are you a “helicopter” parent, hovering over your child then swooping in to intervene at the first sign of trouble? Or a “lawnmower” parent, smoothing over every possible situation that could cause your child stress or discomfort?

Have you come across a “tea cup” child who is overprotected and emotionally fragile that they will crack at the first obstacle?

A recent story on over protected kids in the Huffington Post referred to an Australian study that found a staggering 90 per cent of school counsellors and child psychologists had seen incidents of over parenting.

It made me wonder how we’d compare here in New Zealand.

Would we be the same? Better?

Or even worse?

Resilience is so important in all aspects of modern life, from dealing with text bullying to managing at university or in the workplace.

But we all know how hard it is to sit back and watch your child fail. Instead, we need to teach our children how to assess risk and work out some harm minimisation strategies.

The Prime Minister’s Chief Science Advisor, (who is also a board member of the Families Commission), Professor Sir Peter Gluckman has explored the issue of resilience in young people.

He says that by not allowing children to learn about risks, we set adolescents up for a very tough transition to adulthood.

Resilience he says needs to be instilled in the first five years of life so children can cope with our ever-changing and increasingly complex world.

Today, despite adolescents maturing earlier, they are accepted as adults later than ever. He calls this ‘tightloose parenting’ where we overprotect the children, then

While we all want our children to succeed, we also need to let our kids experience failure. As it hard as it may be, kids need to learn how to cope with disappointment, setbacks and failure, to be resilient. This isn’t about encouraging failure but teaching kids how to bounce back when things go wrong - and the younger the better.

let teens run wild with few social constraints. In previous generations it was the other way around with ‘loose-tight’ parenting being the norm.

So what has changed? More protective parenting? Older parents having fewer children?

The increased complexity of today’s technological society?

Or our new awareness that the brain is not fully mature until 25 to 30 years of age? Compare that with the average age of a midshipman serving with Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar over 200 years ago – it was just 12 years old.

There’s a growing international school of thought that believes failure is good for our collective mental health. In the US and UK there is an increasing call for children to be encouraged to experience failure and learn how to deal with it.

Teachers, parents and academics are starting to explore ways for children and young people to take risks, to understand failure, learn judgement, and the importance of perseverance in success.

One innovative example is Wimbledon Girls’ High School, a top London school which has introduced Failure Week.

They were concerned that some students were over-reacting to failure, instead of seeing

it as a key component of future success.

They portray failure as acceptable and a normal part of life, by discussing how the students felt about failure, using famous people who had overcome failure, and other activities including asking parents and tutors to share tales of their own failures.

Closer to home, a Wellington principal made it clear that he would not accept the tide of notes from parents trying to excuse their primary-aged boys from the annual cross country.

Instead, at the end of the day, he told the boys that for some, this was their favourite day of the school year when they would shine. For many, this was the day they’d dread most. He told the boys that this is how life is – there will be days or weeks and periods when it’s not your day and you will struggle, but you will get through it.

I think we should tell our young people that: ■ Bill Gates’ first business failed?

■ Stephen King’s first novel was rejected 30 times?

■ Thomas Edison failed 1000 times before creating the lightbulb?

■ Vincent Van Gogh only sold one painting in his lifetime?

■ Jay-Z couldn’t get signed to any record labels?

■ Soichiro Honda started out making scooters while he was unemployed after being turned down for a job

How many of our kids would cope with such setbacks?

As a country we also need to be more accepting of failure.

It’s the other side of the innovation coin - not only trying new things but not being afraid to say when something isn’t working.

This is a very real problem for government agencies, who are encouraged to innovate and try new things, but face public criticism when they propose to stop funding an unsuccessful programme.

And this is where the Families Commission comes in, and its newly created Social Policy Monitoring and Evaluation Unit (SuPERU). The commission’s new role is to increase the use of evidence to improve the lives of New Zealanders, and our families and whanau.

This includes encouraging a robust and honest evaluation of the billions and billions of dollars spent on social programmes. We’ve just completed a review of relationship education in schools, and are completing work on effective parenting programmes.

We need to have a better understanding of which programmes work, when and why – and which don’t.

The real skill is to learn from the evidence and come back with a better, stronger idea, policy or programme. And that’s a strength we need to instil in our families, communities and our decision makers.

As the Irish writer Samuel Beckett said, “Try again, fail again, fail better”.

Or as I prefer, “Fail fast and learn quickly”.

Bieber charged with assault Justin Bieber was charged with assault for allegedly hitting a Toronto limousine driver several times in the back of the head last month, just hours after his attorney entered a separate not guilty plea in Florida to drunken-driving and other charges.

The baby-faced 19-year-old turned himself in to a Toronto police station yesterday evening, arriving amid a crush of media and screaming fans. He was charged with one count of assault and is scheduled to appear in court in Toronto on March 10.

Police allege Bieber was one of six people who were picked up by a limousine from a nightclub in the early morning hours of December 30, and there was an altercation while en route to a hotel.

Police said during the altercation one of the passengers hit the limo driver in the back of the head several times.

“The driver stopped the limousine, exited the vehicle and called police,” a statement said.

“The man who struck him left the scene before police arrived.”

Howard Weitzman, Bieber’s attorney in California, said his client is innocent and declined to comment on the allegations against Bieber or any potential defense, saying it was now a matter for the court to handle.

At least 250 million of the world’s 650 million primary school age children are unable to read, write or do basic mathematics, according to a report Wednesday commissioned by the UN education agency.

The report found that 130 million are in primary school but have not achieved the minimum benchmarks for learning, and almost 120 million have spent little or no time in a classroom including 57 million youngsters who are not attending school.

Passengers recover Passengers aboard a Caribbean cruise ship where almost 700 people fell ill recalled days of misery as it returned to its US home port yesterday, its trip cut short by what is suspected to be one of the largest norovirus outbreaks in the last 20 years.

Kim Waite, 50, of England was on the Royal Caribbean cruise to celebrate the end of her cancer treatments. She got severely ill.

“There were just hundreds of people being sick everywhere,” she said. “They were throwing up in buckets and bags — I started crying, I couldn’t believe it. I was in shock.” The ship was carrying 3050 passengers.

400 pythons found in home A schoolteacher was arrested yesterday after hundreds of living and dead pythons in plastic bins were found stacked floor to ceiling inside his stench-filled suburban California home.

As investigators wearing respirator masks carried the reptiles out of the house by the score and stacked them in the driveway, reporters and passers-by gagged at the smell.

Some held their noses or walked away from the fivebedroom home to get a breath of air.

“The smell alone — I feel like I need to take a shower for a week,” said police officer Anthony Bertagna. “They’re pretty much in all the bedrooms — everywhere.”

Officers said they found more than 400 snakes — at least 220 of them dead — as well as numerous mice and

rats, in the Santa Ana home of William Buchman, 53, after neighbours complained about the smell. He was arrested for investigation of neglect in the care of animals, Bertagna said.

Police said he was involved in a snake-breeding enterprise.

“House of Horrors: That’s the best way to describe it,” one officer said. “I mean there’s so many dead snakes ... ranging from dead for months to just dead.”

Suicide car bomb kills 2 in Afghanistan A suicide car bomber killed two police officers in eastern Afghanistan yestersday while policemen elsewhere in the same province foiled another suicide attack, officials said.

The car bomber targeted a police and intelligence compound in Nangarhar province’s Pachir Wagam district, said provincial spokesman Ahmad Zia Abdulzai.

In an emailed statement, the

Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, which also wounded three members of the Afghan security forces.

Insurgents in Afghanistan have intensified attacks recently in a campaign to regain territory as foreign forces prepare to leave the country at the end of 2014.

Also on Thursday in Nangarhar province, a would-be suicide bomber was shot by

officers as he tried to attack the home of a member of Afghanistan’s parliament in the city of Jalalabad, police said.

Provincial spokesman Hazrat Hussain Mashraqiwal said the bomber’s suicide vest detonated when he was shot.

Only the bomber was killed.

No one claimed responsibility for the botched attack, but the Taliban have in the past targeted prominent Afghans.

A rare snowstorm left thousands across the US South frozen in their tracks, with workers sleeping in their offices, students camping in their schools, and commuters abandoning cars along the highway to seek shelter in churches or even grocery stores.

Yesterday’s storm left icicles along Florida beaches and paralysed cities such as Atlanta, hub to major corporations and the world’s busiest airport. At least six people died in traffic accidents, and four people who were killed in a Mississippi fire blamed on a faulty heater.

Early obesity risk A new study of obesity finds that much of a child’s “weight fate” is set by age 5, and that nearly half of kids who became obese by the eighth grade were already overweight when they started kindergarten. The prevalence of weight problems has long been known — about a third of US kids are overweight or obese. But surprisingly little is known about which kids will develop obesity, and at what age. Researchers think there may be a window of opportunity to prevent it, and “we keep pushing our critical window earlier and earlier on,” said Solveig Cunningham, a scientist at Emory University.

Robber executed A Missouri man who killed a jeweller during a 1991 robbery was executed for the crime, marking the state’s third lethal injection in as many months. Herbert Smulls, 56, was executed by a lethal injection late Wednesday of pentobarbital at the state prison in Bonne Terre. He was convicted of killing Stephen Honickman and badly injuring his wife, Florence, during a robbery at their jewellry shop in suburban St. Louis on July 27, 1991.

An environmentally conscious Dunedin hairdresser is on the verge of signing an international contract for a hair product she dreamed up while making school lunches.

Director and colourist at Caversham hair salon Scott Base, Amanda Buckingham came up with the idea for a biodegradable alternative to aluminium hair dye foils after looking for ways to make her and her husband’s salon more environmentally friendly.

“I looked in the rubbish bins and I was like ‘man we use some tin foil’,” Ms Buckingham said.

After failing to find any alternatives on the market, she gained the inspiration while making school lunches for her children.

“I was making school lunches and I looked in the drawer and saw baking paper and I thought ‘I wonder what that would be like’.”

After two years of product development, with the help of Otago Polytechnic’s innovation workSpace, she settled on a product called “One Systema”, made from a bio-degradable paper product made from rock, with “One” coming from the Maori word for soil and sand as opposed to the number.

She is now on the verge of signing a potentially “multimillion-dollar” contract to license the product to either one or multiple international distribution companies.

She attributed her success to a determination to see things through and the “amazing” amount of expertise on hand in Dunedin, and the rest of New Zealand, to help develop the product and pitch it to the world.

“What it has proved is that New Zealand [and Dunedin] have the resources to be successful. We sometimes think we are not big enough to take on a global contract, but the

work we produce here is amazing.”

The journey to get One Systema to the market had taken her to Europe where she pitched the product last year.

She was now “100 per cent” certain it would reach salons hopefully by this spring - with negotiations well under way.

It was now just a case of the “big boys nutting it out”, she said.

“One of the things I was told when the Italians were testing it was that their product tester is one of the most [thorough] people you could ever meet . . . but he had nothing negative to say.”

Developing the product, which had been used in her salon for 16 months, was not about “getting rich”, but instead about reducing the carbon footprint of the hairdressing industry.

“The coolest thing about it is it’s non-tree felled, there are no chemicals used in its production and I can’t find anything like it.”

Research of the product had shown it took as little as about 3 per cent of the amount of energy to produce it compared to aluminium.

Once a contract was signed Ms Buckingham planned to continue working in her salon and had three other ideas for products she was keen to develop.

Otago Polytechnic innovation workSpace manager Eva Gluyas said the product had huge potential. “You cannot imagine how much aluminium foil gets saturated in hydrogen peroxide wrapped up in a ball... and put into the earth and how poisonous[ that is].”

New Zealand hairdressers on average went through 1000m of aluminium foil a month.

“It’s crazy. There is this huge environmental problem around hair dressing which no-one is talking about,” she said.

NZ dollar drops The New Zealand dollar dropped sharply yesterday after the Reserve Bank surprised some by keeping its official cash rate at 2.5 per cent.

While the prevailing view was that the bank would wait until March before firing its first monetary salvo in nearly three years, some participants had nevertheless priced in a 25 basis-point rate hike at yesterday’s rate review. When it didn’t eventuate, the Kiwi fell from US82.63c before the release to US81.82c soon after. Sealord in red Sealord, New Zealand’s secondlargest fishing company, sank into the red after crystallising a $46.9 million loss on the sale of its Argentinian unit last year and has since put its stake in North Island Mussels up for sale. The Nelson-based company made a net loss of $44.3 million in the 12 months ended September 30, compared to a profit of $3.5 million a year earlier, according to holding company Kura’s financial statements, lodged with the Companies Office. Sealord wrote off $37.1 million from the sale, and incurred a further $9.9 million in operating losses. Gross profit sank 23 per cent to $75.3 million, on a 6.1 per cent decline in revenue to $457.3 million.

Woolly shoes take off Tim Brown’s sockless woollen running shoe idea is one step closer to being a commercial reality after the start-up’s wildly successful crowd funding campaign. It took just over 24 hours for Brown’s fledgling company Three Over Seven to reach its $30,000 target on crowd funding site Kickstarter. So far, more than 290 people from around the world have backed the Wool Runners idea each pledging a small financial contribution and that figure could grow much higher by the end of the monthlong funding push. The former All Whites and Phoenix soccer player said the goal of hitting $30,000 was the breakeven point to get the shoes into production.

The shoes are made from midmicron New Zealand sheep wool, utilising a patent pending process comprising of knitting together wool fibres, melt-bond fibres, and multifilament yarn.

Ports of Auckland said it would spend $12 million on a new tug and two new straddle carriers for its container terminal. The tug and carriers were under construction and would be delivered later this year. Ports of Auckland said the investment would allow the port to handle bigger ships and to boost container handling speed and efficiency. “Container volumes are up, Auckland is growing fast, and this investment is all about handling that growth efficiently,” chief executive Tony Gibson said.

Ports of Auckland senior manager marine services, Allan D’Souza, said bigger ships were on the way, so the port needed a new tug to provide more power and manoeuvrability on the water.

New Zealand’s biggest toilet paper supplier expects a $60 million upgrade of its Bay of Plenty manufacturing facility to fight the competitive challenge posed by increased Asian imports.

SCA Hygiene Australasia’s expanded Kawerau plant was officially opened by Prime Minister John Key this week.

The company, whose brands include Purex and Handee, is a joint venture between Sweden’s SCA and Australia’s Pa-

cific Equity Partners and has a 30 per cent share of the local toilet tissue and paper towel market.

Its Kawerau expansion includes a 13,000sqm tissue conversion hall, a 55m long tissue winding machine and robotic packing and dispatch technology.

The upgrade had created 10 new jobs at the plant, which employed a total of 200 staff, said SCA Hygiene’s president, Peter Diplaris.

■ With some of the butter and juice from the cooked tomatoes, baste an ovenproof dish then gently remove the tomatoes from the pan and arrange, cut side down in the dish (fit them in as tightly as possible).

■ Spread the pesto over the pastry then cover the tomatoes with pastry folding back any excess pastry. Bake for 15-20 minutes until the pastry is puffed, golden and crunchy.

■ Loosen the edges and allow to cool for 10 minutes before plac-

ing a plate on top of the dish and turning out.

■ Mix together salad ingredients.

■ Slice baguette on an angle. Mix garlic with the butter. Spread on slices of baguette. Wrap bread in tin foil and place in preheated oven at 180°C for 10 minutes.

■ Serve the tart in wedges with a side of garlic bread, basil and pine nut salad.

Take care with passwords

While it may be tempting to use simple and easy-to-remember passwords for your numerous online accounts and webpages, you might want to think again after reading the list of last year’s top passwords.

Collated by technology website SplashData, the list of the top 25 most popular passwords shows that many of us take a relaxed approach to online security.

The list is made up of the most popular stolen passwords made public throughout 2013, including Photoshop-maker Adobe’s big leak last October, when 150 million users’ data was compromised.

Topping the list of popular passwords for the first time was the unoriginal “123456”. “password” previously had the honour of being top, but last year had to settle for second place.

In fifth place was “123abc” down one place on the previous year - while in seventh place was “111111”, up two places.

Other popular passwords included “monkey” at 17 and “trustno1” at 24 - down 12 places.

NetSafe Operations Manager Lee Chisholm said people needed to take more care to protect their online information, much of which was highly personal.

“Our advice is that people always use strong passwords and that means 15 characters, if the particular website you’re using can take 15 characters.”

She recommends using a mixture of upper-case and lowercase letters, as well as numbers and symbols.

A failure to use secure passwords made you vulnerable to cyber criminals, Ms Chisholm said.

“Their accounts are much less safe if they’re using a weak password.”

In brief Android dominates The Google Android system was used on 78.9 per cent of smartphones sold globally in 2013, a survey shows. The report by the research firm Strategy Analytics confirms the ascendancy of Android, which has extended its lead over Apple’s iOS, which is used on the iPhone. “There is little doubt that 2013 was the year of Android,” said Neil Mawston, analyst with the consultancy.

“However, Android’s annual growth rate slowed to 62 per cent in 2013, its lowest level in the platform’s history. “We expect Android’s growth to slow further in 2014 due to market saturation, and rivals like Mi.

Google sells Motorola Google says it’s signed a deal to sell its struggling smartphone unit Motorola to Chinese tech giant Lenovo for $US2.91 billion ($A3.33 billion). “Lenovo has the expertise and track record to scale Motorola Mobility into a major player within the Android ecosystem,” Google chief executive Larry Page said.

Even under Google, Motorola has failed to gain traction in a rapidly evolving smartphone market now dominated by South Korea’s Samsung and US-based Apple.

Eureka moment

Ms Chisholm said a common mistake was using the same password for multiple websites and accounts.

“If one account is breached or compromised then the people can go into all of the accounts that that person owns.”

She highlighted the recent problems with Telecom’s Yahoo!Xtra email service as a glaring example why people should take internet security seriously.

Earlier this month many Yahoo!Xtra customers reported suspicious emails, often with

“Hi” or “Hello” in the subject line, flooding their inboxes.

An investigation was unable to confirm the scale and source of the issue, but it was possible that unauthorised access of customer address information sourced via attacks in 2013 may have played a role.

“Clearly, if a whole lot of email addresses have been stolen if you like, or compromised, then using weak passwords means that those accounts are very easy to break into,” Ms Chisholm said.

In brief Double the cash There’ll be double the prize money on offer tonight for taking a one-handed catch at the cricket.

The final match of the Black Caps series in Wellington will see fans given two chances to grab a $100,000 one-handed Tui catch.

Until now, there could be only one catch per match. The beer company said giving fans two chances at the last match of the ODI series was a way to celebrate New Zealand’s series victory over the world champions India.

William Papesch, Tui Marketing Manager, said the Tui Catch a Million promotion had been a revelation for not only cricket fans but the game itself over the summer. “We’ve already seen two spectacular catches worthy of the $100,000 prize, and ideally we’d like to see a couple more,” he said.

“We hope this additional prize entices a few more to attend the game.”

Ko the major attraction at NZ Open Last year it was Ready, Steady, Ko. This time around the marketing slogan for the New Zealand Women’s Open is Here We Ko Again!.

This week’s three-day golf tournament at Clearwater in Christchurch, which has a purse of $334,000, is all about one person: Lydia Ko. The 16-year-old is arguably the most marketable player in the women’s game and the promoters have ran with it this week.

Ko’s image emblazoned on it and simply put she is the face of the operation.

Since graduating from her record-setting amateur days, the freshly-minted professional has made a smooth transition to the paid ranks.

She claimed a share of seventh in the first LPGA Tour event of the year in the Bahamas last weekend, while she also won for the first time as a professional at the Swinging Skirts tournament on the LPGA of Korea Tour in December.

Last year New Zealand hoped

Ko would win the national open and now there’s almost a sense of expectation she should be able to deliver more of the same this time around.

“It’s just playing my own game. I can’t control what somebody else does and there’s a lot of great competition out here and a lot of great players so I can’t come out here thinking I’m definitely going to win,” Ko said yesterday. “So I’m just going to try my best and, like I said, if somebody makes an eagle, that’s out of my control.”

Being something of a minor

celebrity has never bothered Ko, although she admitted there was even more scrutiny around her recently.

“The biggest thing is media attention. People want interviews and more interviews. Before, we said yes, yes, yes, I’ll do everything, but now we have to say no. It’s a kind no but you can’t please everybody. Sometimes I walk along and people stare at me and sometimes I think ‘what’s wrong’ but I think they’re just trying to figure it out whether it’s me.”

Minnows make cup Cricketing minnows the United Arab Emirates and Scotland secured berths yesterday at the 2015 World Cup after taking the top two spots at a qualification tournament in New Zealand. Both teams finished the round-robin phase of the International Cricket Council qualifying event on eight points after posting four wins and one loss, with the UAE’s superior run rate giving them the edge over Scotland. The results mean they will play in next year’s World Cup alongside superpowers of the game such as India and Australia.

Scotland featured in the World Cup in 1999 and 2007, while the UAE appeared in the tournament’s 1996 edition.

Plains Ladies Probus It was a cool but sunny morning for the first Probus meeting of the New Year held on the 27th January. There was a good attendance with 1 visitor being welcomed. Birthday wishes were given to all the members that have had and are having this month.

There were 20 apologies accepted and Pat the Treasurer reported that funds were holding up well. We wish Pat good health after her time in Hospital. Audrey read out a letter from Ross Gurney regarding setting up a New Zealand Centre. Several people have been contacted by Natalite our Almoner and wished them a speedy recovery. The Movie for next month is “THE BOOK THIEF” to be held on Wednesday 5th February at 11 am at the Regent Theatre.

Isla Jones was welcomed by Natalite and was made a new member to the club. 3 members: Joyce Chambers, Deb Ellery and Margaret Pearce all gave us interesting Profiles on their lives.

The raffle was drawn and Lyla Bain was the lucky winner. After we all got back to our seats again our speaker was Allison Early who gave us a very interesting speech with slides on her time teaching in Tonga.

She spent 2 years on a small Island called Lifuka which is very remote.

Saturday markets were a welcome place to buy fresh fruit. She had her own house and was able to grow her own vegetables and as well had hens for eggs. They had rain water to flush the toilets, the animals had to drink salty water. There is about 6000 people on the small Island, the power comes from Diesel generators.

She enjoyed teaching the children and there was always great entertainment when there was any functions being held.

Tinwald Rugby Club We held our meeting on Tuesday 15th January 2014, it looks like it is going to be another full on season and we are looking forward to the 2014 season and hope that all existing and any possible new members are training up for this to!!

Sport IPL contracts will steel Kiwi minds

BY ANDREW ALDERSON Any concern about complacency creeping into the New Zealand camp with an unassailable lead in the one-day international series against India can be eradicated using three capital letters - IPL. This is the last limited overs opportunity for the New Zealanders to showcase their talents with the Indian Premier League auction set down for February 12.

A number of New Zealand players have produced quality skite reels this series with the

footage beamed to the world’s biggest television audience, which includes IPL team owners.

Kane Williamson and Hamish Bennett are the only New Zealanders not on the auction list from today’s likely playing XI. Ross Taylor and Brendon McCullum’s reserve prices are highest at 200 Indian lakh [$388,000]; Corey Anderson, Kyle Mills, Nathan McCullum and Jesse Ryder are at 100 lakh [$194,000]; Martin Guptill and Tim Southee are at 50 lakh [$97,000].

The majority of the 18 New

Ross Taylor’s reserve price is $388,000 on the auction list.

Zealanders are at 30 lakh [$58,000].

There’s optimism more players might be selected due to the form of the current team and the fact New Zealanders Daniel Vettori (Bangalore), John Wright (Mumbai) and Stephen Fleming (Chennai) are coaches.

Their respective captains are Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni who are playing this series.

Nathan McCullum is exercising caution. “It could go against you. They don’t want to be seen to play favourites, plus they know our weaknesses as much

as our strengths.”

One player not on the auction list is Canterbury’s Matt Henry who was called up to train yesterday as cover for Southee and Anderson who are being monitored for injury niggles.

Henry’s unlikely to play but was rapt to be making cricket progress of his own.

The 22-year-old right-armer has 55 wickets at 22.70 in firstclass matches, 37 wickets at 19.24 and an economy rate of 5.17 in 50-over games, and 21 wickets at 30.90 in T20s.

Meanwhile, Martin Crowe and Andrew Jones’ place as New

Zealand cricket’s greatest combination at No3 and No4 across tests and one-day internationals is under threat from Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor, particularly in the shorter format.

Crowe and Jones batted together 28 times for 1803 runs at an average partnership of 64.39, including four century and six half-century stands. They set the test world record partnership of 467 against Sri Lanka, 23 years ago this Monday.

Taylor and Williamson have combined in 25 outings for 1181 runs at 53.68 with two century stands.

Pritchard Shield three-way adds spark to final round

Lauriston, Coldstream, Methven and the Tech Sharks all head into tomorrow’s final round of senior cricket’s Pritchard Shield with a chance to claim the trophy.

Lauriston and Methven are

tied on 16 points with Coldstream and the Sharks on 13, with the top two up against the bottom two.

Lauriston missed their chance to claim the trophy having lost their last two matches and now face the defending champion Tech Sharks.

The Bevan Stroud Memorial Challenge Trophy is also up for grabs after the Sharks reclaimed it off Allenton last week having lost it to Methven three weeks ago.

Methven host Coldstream and will be hoping to repeat their first encounter when they rolled

Coldstream for 70.

Coldstream will be full of confidence about spoiling the hosts’ chances coming off wins over the Sharks and Lauriston in the last two weeks in a run of three straight wins.

If either Lauriston or Methven win and the other loses they

claim the trophy but if they both win to finish tied, Methven hold the tie breaker having won their first round match and the second match being rained off.
