Stadium build gets under way BY SUSAN SANDYS
SUSAN.S@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
Construction of the $32.7 million EA Networks Centre pools and stadium project will begin next week. Successful tenderer Naylor Love plans to have workers on site as of Monday, establishing sheds and temporary power and water services. The first building stage of digging out the foundations is likely to begin later in the week. ACL has already been on site for several weeks undertaking earthworks to prepare the site. Ashburton District Council property office John Rooney said the project was on schedule, and was due for completion in January 2015. “It’s good to see the progress being made,” Mr Rooney said. The swimming complex and indoor sports stadium will encompass a huge 9000 square metres, and the building project has been contracted to
Naylor Love for $25.1 million, the biggest single contract ever let by the council. Mr Rooney said the building project would involve specialised work and a number of sub-contractors would be on site throughout. After digging out the foundations, excavating for the pools would have to be undertaken, and pipe work installed. Other specialised work would include metalwork in respect of the structural bones of the building. In approving the $25.1 million contract, the council committed $2.7 million above what it initially budgeted. Its original commitment set five years ago was $25 million, while the extra $5 million required for the $30 million project was to be raised in the community. However, successful tenderer Naylor Love was the cheapest of three tenders before the council, and also had the highest quality rating. More on stadium P8-9

Today is the last day dog owners have to get their dog registrations in, but news isn’t all bad for locals owners who have left it to the last minute, as reregistrations can be completed online on the Council website this year. All dogs over the age of three months are required to be registered, and late registrations will incur fines.
Hacker group Anonymous claims to have taken down more than a dozen National Party websites in protest against the GCSB spy bill. In a video posted to YouTube, Anonymous New Zealand said it strongly condemned the bill and had decided to take “direct action” by taking down 14 sites.

More pages, Hospitality staff offered vaccine more news HEALTH
BY MYLES HUME
MYLES.H@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
The Ashburton Trust is offering its 250 staff vaccinations to prevent the town’s hepatitis A epidemic from worsening. Canterbury medical officer of health Dr Alistair Humphrey said yesterday Ashburton hospitality businesses had a responsibility to ensure the rare virus did not infect more people, after another four cases were confirmed this week, taking the total to 17. He said if an infected food handler turned up to work “they had the potential to infect hundreds more”. Ashburton Trust chief executive Giles Beal said “it was obviously an issue” in Ashburton, so there was an obligation
for hospitality businesses to ensure they did not spread the virus. “We will be offering a vaccination to all our staff and I hope all the staff who handle food would be keen to have it done,” he said. He said the trust would cover the $99 cost for each vaccination of the 250 staff who wanted it. Hand sanitiser will also be more readily available for staff. Hepatitis A is passed on through contact with faeces, with poor hygiene – particularly after using the toilet or changing nappies – being the main contributor. Dr Humphrey said it was a positive move, as the vaccine acted “as an insurance policy”
SYMPTOMS
Early symptoms of hepatitis A can be mistaken for the flu. Some people, especially children, may have no symptoms at all. Common symptoms: ■ Jaundice ■ Fever ■ Anorexia ■ Nausea ■ Abdominal discomfort ■ Malaise ■ Dark urine for hospitality businesses. And he encouraged all food handlers in the district to vaccinate against the hepatitis A. “The big issue now is that this has grumbled on for more than three months and my
main concern is if a food handler gets sick and spreads it then there is the potential to infect hundreds. “It’s a critical point, I know I wouldn’t want to be the business owner who infected so many people.” Three preschools in Ashburton have held vaccination clinics since the outbreak, with about 300 people already receiving an injection. Although it was important food handlers took the advice onboard, Mr Humphrey said Mid Canterbury preschools and schools had been told to be vigilant with handwashing. He said the outbreak Ashburton was facing was rare, as health authorities generally dealt with “the odd case”.
CELEBRATION
Fireworks to light up Mt Hutt for 40th BY SUSAN SANDYS
SUSAN.S@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
Mt Hutt Ski Area turns 40 this coming weekend, and you are invited to the retro-themed party. A highlight will be a nighttime Fire and Ice Show on Saturday. Ski area manager James McKenzie said a 15-minute spectacular fireworks show, launched from the ski area’s basin, will be able to be seen from the plains. “That will be pretty amazing because the whole mountain will be lighting up,” manager James McKenzie said. “They (fireworks) are so big that they will be launching to a height over the summit, they will go hundreds and hundreds of metres into the sky.” The show will begin at 6.30pm and there will also be fire twirling, a flare ski demonstration, live music on the deck, and Huber’s Hut and Sky High Café will be open.
The evening will follow a day of activities on the mountain, including search and rescue dog display, rides with groomers, snowmobiles, husky dogs and Hagglunds, face painting and clown entertainment. On Sunday at 11am superstar boulder Rocky will be unveiled at his new home at Canterbury View, about six kilometres up the access road. Mr McKenzie said it had been decided to keep Rocky at the Canterbury View area, as the site was more accessible to the public than the ski area itself. Many people stopped at Canterbury View to take in the scenery across the Canterbury Plains and to take photos. Rocky will be blessed by members of the Hakatere Marae and there will be a book signing. Rocky’s original owner, Phil Johnson, will be at the unveiling.
Hagglunds will be in action on the mountain for the celebration this weekend.

We hope you are enjoying your new-look compact Guardian. You are holding the third edition of the new format and we hope you are getting used to the design and where you can find your favourite sections. If in doubt, please refer to the pointers at the bottom of the front page or the index on page 2. Today is another memorable day as we are presenting Mayor Angus McKay as another new columnist in our ever-growing gallery of highprofile contributors to the Opinion section. With more local voices and more local opinions, we hope we will trigger more local debate. On the local front, among the flood of positive comments, we have been a bit confused that a few readers still feel there was not enough local content in the Guardian. Just in case you do not have the opportunity to do so, I had a look at our neighbouring daily papers south and north of us, who both have substantially bigger newsrooms and I am pleased to report that our five Guardian reporters can hold their heads high. Yesterday alone, the Guardian produced over a dozen local general news stories and half a dozen sports stories (plus two pages of local sport results). That total does not even include the local columnists, our farming pages, the local heritage section, the local events calendar and the Your Place section. That number of local stories was more than our colleagues down south and nearly the same as our colleagues in Christchurch who work in a newsroom 10 times our size. But neither paper had any news from Ashburton. Thanks for your feedback though, good and bad, and we will try to do even better.

Frustration grows as BY MYLES HUME
MYLES.H@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
A power outage yesterday left Ashburton businesses in the dark for a second time this month, frustrating shopkeepers who say it is happening too often. About 7.30am, 100 Pipers owner Matt Harvey had bread in the oven and was preparing food for the day ahead when the power went out, leaving him and his employees in complete darkness for more than two hours with a bakery stand still to fill. “This isn’t good at all, we’ve got bread in the oven and all this other stuff to bake, we will be well behind for the day,” he said. “Last time it was understandable because it was windy, but this time there’s nothing that could have really caused it.” Mr Harvey was one of several business owners in the boundaries of Cass to West Street and Havelock to Kermode Street who were without power from 7.30am. EA Networks worked tirelessly to get the power back to affected customers by 10am. It was the second time businesses in the CBD had been without power this month after it was cut for 45 minutes on July 3 when gusty nor-west winds arced a power line across a guy wire holding a power pole, tripping a circuit. Mystery still surrounds what caused yesterday’s power outage as many businesses turned around their closed signs and waited for their shop lights to turn back on. Green Sushi owner Youngil Lee was visibly upset that he could not cook his rice and prepare food for his usual influx of lunchtime customers. He said he had been operating the business for seven months and was sick of constant power outages.

Ashburton Guardian
s CBD shuts down again Cables give up the ghost BY GABRIELLE STUART GABRIELLE.S@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
The cause of the failure of 35-year-old cables at the root of power cuts yesterday remains a mystery, and specialist gear will arrive in Ashburton this morning for further tests of cables behind Burnett Street and Havelock Street. Staff at EA Networks in Ashburton were sent on an early morning quest yesterday, working against time to hunt down a cable responsible for power outages in the CBD. EA Networks operations manager Ken Stirling said it was unusual for underground cables to fail, as they were largely protected from the elements. He said the problem was identified early on as an underground cable between Moore Street and Havelock Street, but the bigger issue was locating the cable causing the problem,
which proved “rather tricky”. “The problem is in locating it, because the last thing we want to do is dig around too much and cause a bigger problem by disturbing other cables.” Power was restored shortly before 10am to the main area affected by the cuts, which stretched between Cass Street and the main road, from Havelock Street to Kermode Street. However there were wider short term cuts around the area, as EA Networks staff worked to fix the problem. Mr Stirling said that the fault was completely unrelated to power cuts earlier in the month, which were caused by wind damage to rural power lines. “These cables have been in the ground for some time and never caused an issue, so the next step is to replace them and look further into what caused them to fail.”
Below: Traffic lights at the intersection of East and Havelock Streets were not working during the power outage, with drivers controlling the intersection themselves. 300713-MH-015

HOUSING MARKET
WEBSITE DOWN
Investment ban no issue locally Key blasts hackers
BY MYLES HUME
MYLES.H@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
Plans to shut overseas investors out of the housing market has “some merit” a Mid Canterbury property expert says, but it won’t change much at a local level. Property Brokers Ashburton consultant and valuer Clark McLeod’s comments follow Labour Leader David Shearer’s plans to ban people who do not live in New Zealand from buying existing housing. Mr Shearer said exemptions would be given to Australians and offshore investors who were wanting to build new property. It is part of Labour’s plan to water down the hot housing market being spearheaded by Auckland. It would serve as an alternative to the Government’s plan to restrict low deposit home loans and raising the thresholds on KiwiSaver and first home buyer packages. Mr McLeod said he saw the Labour leader’s intentions, but predicted it would not cause waves in Mid Canterbury. “I think his policy does have
some merits, but it’s more applicable to the Auckland market and larger cities than the likes of Ashburton because we don’t see a significant number of overseas purchases,” he said. Prime Minister John Key said Labour’s policy was pointless, as overseas investors made up a small part of the market. However, Mr McLeod said if it took five per cent out of the market, then that lightened demand. “In Ashburton we noticed an affect when we went through a
growth phase, we had an influx of out-of-town people and it’s hard to substantiate what percentage of influence that was, but I would say about 10 per cent of buyers came directly because of the earthquake. “So the result today is we have a growth in values.” While some first home buyers in other parts of the country are struggling to compete as house prices soar, Mr McLeod said it was a different story in Ashburton where housing was affordable.
Prime Minister John Key has labelled the behaviour of hackers who shut down government ministers’ and MPs’ websites as juvenile. Mr Key said the Anonymous group were “obviously doing something that’s both illegal and inappropriate and trying to make their own political point, but they are getting their point wrong”. Mr Key said the Government would have to look at how secure the websites of its party members were. He did not believe the hackers’ actions would bolster the Government’s drive to make changes to laws governing the GCSB. “A lot has been said about the GCSB, but in the end I stand by what I’ve said the whole way through which is, this is a tightening up of the legislation, better oversight and actually GCSB legislation is necessary.” Anonymous sent a message via Youtube saying they had taken over 14 websites linked to the National Party as a protest against the GCSB Bill. - APNZ
The median Ashburton house price is estimated to be $280,000. Ray White Real Estate Ashburton principal owner Jill Quaid questioned Mr Shearer’s move, saying offshore buyers did not just purchase property to be rented to New Zealanders. “That’s not what’s happening in the Auckland market, up there parents from China are buying houses for their children that are in school and for people coming to New Zealand,” she said.
GRANT MONEY

Apply for cash, groups told Voting packs returned The Ashburton District Council has money to give away! Non-profit groups and organisations in the district can now apply for the annual Grant Scheme, School Holiday Programme Grant or the Biodiversity Grant scheme. “The council’s Annual Grant Scheme has a total of $50,000 available to community groups wanting to progress projects or new initiatives that benefit our
district,” community services officer Jo Naylor said. “Twenty-five community groups received funding last year for activities such as a repairs and maintenance of community halls and facilities, sports facilities development and the purchase of equipment.” A total of $5000 is also available for non-profit organisations and groups to fund their school holiday programmes for
children aged between five and 14 years. Last year five community groups benefited from this scheme. This council is also offering biodiversity grants up to $5000, for projects that help enhance or protect native biodiversity. All applications close 5pm, Wednesday, August 31. PAUL SUMMERFIELD PLUMBING LTD - BUSINESS PARTNER Paul & Fiona Summerfield, of Paul Summerfield Plumbing (2006) Ltd, have always been strong supporters of the new the EA Networks Centre.
Their family has always been very involved in sports to benefit from the Centre, especially swimming, and the next generation is coming along and sure to make full use of the wonderful new facilities. Having travelled all over New Zealand to aquatic centres while the family was competing, they saw how important well designed and run facilities are to a community, and the spin-off benefits to local businesses. Their 9 staff members will also benefit, as all are either still taking part in sports themselves, or have young families, who will be fortunate to use the Centre. Explains Fiona, “Our original intention was to offer a large discount on our tender for plumbing and drainage work done for the Centre’s construction, but a very heavy workload meant we were over-committed and unable to tender, so decided on a sponsorship package instead. We are delighted to be able to play our part in helping support the Centre”.
Jennian Homes HouseBuild Simply Outstanding! On 20 July the Jennian Homes HouseBuild went to auction, the combination of six months’ work, making possible a donation to the EA Networks Centre for $180,000. The HouseBuild, a modern three bedroom home in Ashburton’s Braebrook subdivision, allowed many local businesses to be involved, and the support throughout has been outstanding and inspiring. During the last several months, 36 businesses have worked tirelessly, supplying materials and labour at hugely discounted costs and often for free, to deliver a home for auction, with all profits going towards the EA Networks Centre. The project was initially suggested by Jennian Homes Mid Canterbury’s Director, Nigel Smith. The local Jennian franchise wanted to generate a significant contribution and what better way than working with the Jennian Homes Ashburton Swim Team. As the Team’s major sponsor for a number of years now, it made sense to work on a project together. As Nigel further explains, “We really wanted to do something substantial and we knew the Swim Team were looking for a way to contribute as well, especially as they will be regular users of the Centre. We had project managed a HouseBuild and auction before, for the Event Centre, and knew it was something Jennian, the Swim Team and many in the community could get involved in.” Chris Watson, Project Manager for Jennian Homes Mid Canterbury, sums it up so well: “When you achieve things like this and also know it’s for a great cause, everyone feels pretty good; the HouseBuild has been a true community project”.

TRAFFIC CONGESTION
Revamp for Walnut Ave roundabout Ashburton residents are invited to learn more about the proposed improvements on State Highway 1 at the intersection with Walnut Avenue at New Zealand Transport Agency information sessions next week. Increasing traffic volumes along the state highway and
Walnut Avenue are creating congestion at the intersection, causing queuing and impacting on safety for all road users. It is proposed to remove the roundabout at the intersection with West Street (State Highway 1) and install traffic lights, and longer term to also upgrade
the roundabout on Walnut Avenue at the intersection with East Street, probably replacing it with traffic lights. NZTA will host two drop-in sessions on Tuesday, from noon to 2.30pm and 5pm to 7.30pm, at the Domain Pavilion. Residents are invited to find out more
about what is happening and provide feedback. “This feedback is important to ensure we get the best solution for the two intersections,” the agency’s Christchurch area highway manager Colin Knaggs said. He said replacing the rounda-
bout with traffic lights will enable better control of traffic flows along the state highway and Walnut Avenue, as well as improving safety at the railway crossing and for pedestrians and cyclists. The work could begin in 2015 subject to consenting, land purchase and funding.

A small Mid Canterbury school is set to feature on television screens across the world. Mayfield School provided the backdrop for the filming of a promotional video to celebrate the 100th anniversary of ag-
ricultural machinery giants Claas. “It’s a promotional video for their centenary which I heard was going to be shown across the world,” principal Greg Wilson said. The school was used as the filming location, after Claas
Ashburton’s Stacey Carr, the aunty of pupils Angus and Harry Carr, decided the small rural school would provide the perfect spot for the advert. The youngsters were filmed riding on small Claas machinery toys but the school’s Kapa haka group was one of the
main attractions for the producers, Mr Wilson said. Both Angus and Harry Carr also arrived at Mayfield School on Claas tractor. Mr Wilson said he did not know when the advert would go to air, but said he would be advised beforehand.
Michael Taylor wants to pass on two vital messages after fire gutted his family’s two-storey rented home. “Don’t leave anything like matches or lighters lying around and don’t do what I did and try to put the fire out yourself.” Mr Taylor, his partner, Justine Matenga, and their three children aged seven, five and three escaped the blaze that badly damaged their Aranui home on Saturday morning - alerted by a smoke alarm. But the family’s 18-monthold pet ridgeback-pit bull cross, Diesel, succumbed to smoke inhalation after being trapped in the upstairs master bedroom next to a children’s bedroom where the fire is believed to have started in a wardrobe. One of the children was believed to have been playing with matches. Mr Taylor said he also wasted precious time trying to fight the fire himself before calling the Fire Service. “I was running in and out, but I was only complicating things for myself.” He warned others to heed the Fire Service advice to “get out and stay out” when fire strikes.

HELPING THE POOR

In brief
Lending a hand in Cambodia’s slums
Medal stolen The theft of a Gallipoli veteran’s Anzac medal from his Greytown grave has outraged the former soldier’s family. Percy Pope’s commemorative medallion recognising his service to the country during long and bloody battles of World War I was chiselled off his headstone within the past two weeks.

A former street kid is part of a group travelling from Ashburton to the slums of Cambodia this year, to build homes for families living on the streets. Eddie Kohunui spent several of his younger years on the streets of South Auckland, so helping the homeless has always been an issue close to his heart. He was one of four locals who spent two weeks working in the slums of Cambodia last year, and they will be returning this year with more than double the manpower after sharing their stories with friends and family. “To house a family and buy them land over there costs just $800, and a whole family will live in a space the size of my lounge. We were able to present completed houses to those families, and came back with experiences that have changed us.” The four will return in September this year with a team of 10, and there will be no sitting back and relaxing on their two-week trip. After long days building in 33 degree humid heat last year, the team spent their evenings with children who were out on the streets hunting for recycling to sell, and gifted many of them soccer balls brought from home. Mr Kohunui said that the team was already halfway towards their $14,000 fundraising goal, and support from the community had been “awesome”. “Our local people in Ashburton are like a family, and they get behind anyone who needs help. People here really are awesome.” The slums of Cambodia aren’t the only place Mr Kohunui has seen children in need, and after his return he hopes to to help underprivileged children in Ashburton.

Eddie Kohunui and Nathan Kuru from Ashburton spent two weeks building homes in Cambodia with their partners last year, and hope to return this year with double the manpower.
Family members join party Eddie Kohunui’s daughter, 18-year-old Nikita Kohunui and his 17-year-old nephew, Wiari Peterson, plan to join him on the trip to Cambodia this year. And they’re not just along for the ride. Each Sunday the Ashburton College pupils have camped, rain or shine, outside The Warehouse Ashburton holding fundraising sausage sizzles to cover their costs on the trip. For Mr Kohunui and the returning team members, travelling back with their children this year had special significance. “It’s humbling for us because it’s our next generation, and the experience is going to change how they look at the world.
“Our kids here don’t know what’s happening outside their little world. “They see it on TV, but to them it’s just another ad, and we can’t blame them for that. “My daughter will be finishing her last year of school this year, and it’s a big wide world out there. She has some big decisions to make. “They’re going to come home thinking very differently, and I won’t be surprised if the Playstation gets chucked!” Local couple Nathan and Keri Kuru will also be returning to Cambodia with their children this year, as their son and his partner make the trip for the first time.
QUIZ TO RAISE FUNDS A quiz and games night will be held this weekend at the Ashburton New Life Church to raise funds for the team’s trip to Cambodia. The night will begin at 6.30pm on Saturday, August 3, and will include quizzes, games and an artwork auction, with nibbles provided. Teams of up to six people can register for the quiz by contacting Keri on 027 450 3821 or Rana on 027 724 5364. Costumes are optional on the night, with prizes for the best dressed team.
A final dispatch for New Zealand climber Marty Schmidt, who was killed along with his son Denali in an avalanche on K2, has been posted online. The 53-year-old and his 25-year-old son were reported missing on the mountain in the Karakoram Range which spans Pakistan, India and China. The pair were hoping to become the first father and son team to conquer K2.

TRAFFIC CONGESTION BY ERIN TASKER Many drivers still don’t know how to use the flush median on Tinwald’s main street correctly, a frustrated motorist says. The motorist, who did not wish to be named, vented her anger on social media last week after experiencing someone “tooting madly” at her after she pulled into the median to wait to join the northbound lane of traffic. The median is there to make it easier for motorists turning from eastern Tinwald into the northbound lane on a busy section of State Highway One. When there’s a gap in the southbound lane they can pull out into the median strip and wait for an opportunity to merge into the northbound lane. All too often though, northbound motorists think the turning motorist is pulling out in front of them and get angry. “Archibald Street is shocking for turning right onto,” she said. “You need to use the flush median. I sat for about three to four minutes, getting more and more frustrated, before I decided to use it.” She said she often didn’t use it be-
cause she liked to drive defensively and knew many drivers were still confused about how they worked. “It’s just so dangerous people not knowing how to use them properly because if someone does and uses one, they are in the middle of the road - not everyone drives perfectly on their side and the situation could easily turn nasty,” she said. Ashburton’s Highway Patrol sergeant Steve Burgerhout said a “reasonable proportion of the motoring public” did not understand the rules surrounding flush medians and others lacked confidence when it came to using them. “Flush medians are not for overtaking slow motorists, they are for turning off and on to roads,” he said. Ashburton District Council road safety co-ordinator Rachael Boyd agreed the problem was a lack of understanding. “It can be pretty scary when a car suddenly pulls out onto the road beside (you) as you are unsure of what that driver’s intentions are,” Mrs Boyd said. She said there was a wealth of information available on the New Zealand Transport Association’s website if people wanted to brush up on the road rules.

A flush median provides a place for vehicles that are turning right, or vehicles that have turned right onto the road from a side road or driveway. You can only drive onto the flush median to wait to move into a gap in the traffic flow after you have turned right, or slow down and wait before turning right.

WHEELIE BINS
Recycling bins gain traction BY GABRIELLE STUART GABRIELLE.S@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
Ashburton’s keyboard warriors are hitting Facebook to campaign for wheelie bins to be brought to the district. Likes on the Bring Wheelie Bins to Ashburton page have skyrocketed this week, rising from 80 likes on Sunday to over 700 yesterday. But while over 700 local residents are ready to hit like over the issue, it remains to be seen how many will feel strongly enough to put forward submissions when the system goes up for review later this year. The last Ashburton District Council review of the current kerbside collection system was held in 2011 and a change to wheelie bins was proposed, but the 44 submissions on the issue were split 50-50 between support and opposition for the change. Creator of the Bring Wheelie Bins to Ashburton Facebook page, Shawn Driscoll, said that after moving to Ashburton from Christchurch he found the local system “lousy”. “We find that we don’t recycle anywhere near as much as we did when we had the bins, they were just so much easier! In Ashburton grass clippings and garden trimmings cost to take to the dump and food scraps go in the rubbish, and the recycle bin is way too small so most of that goes in the rubbish too!” He said that another advantage of the wheelie bins was being able to put them out the night before, without having to worry about animals going through. A review of the current kerbside collection system is scheduled this year, and after the review has been held the council will put forward suggested options for public consultation and feedback. Dates for the review and public consultation have not yet been finalised, but will take place later this year.

NEGATIVES
POSITIVES ■ Wheelie bins are easier to move, especially for elderly residents. ■ Bins can be stored outside, with lids that protect against wind and rain, and other elements ■ Animal proof. ■ A three-bin system would allow for organic waste to be collected. ■ Reduces illegal dumping of rubbish.
■ Higher costs to set up and operate. ■ Current user pays system encourages recycling and cutting down on waste. ■ Open bins provide accountability for people mixing rubbish in with recycling. ■ Recycling can no longer be sorted on the truck, so will have to be resorted. ■ Recycling reuse value is lower after it has been compacted and often contaminated.

ROAD CHAOS
A solution to ease the congestion and sometimes chaos on Christchurch roads has been unveiled. The Christchurch Transport Operations Centre was launched this week. It will be similar to the system already in operation in Auckland and Wellington where roads will be watched in real-time and traffic lights phased to meet demands. The city council, NZ Transport Agency and Environment Canterbury will be pooling their resources and working together under one roof managing highways and local roads as one network and better coordinating road works and closures. Blue Star Taxis general manager Bob Wilkinson applauded the solution saying taxis will be less expensive for passengers. “The traffic has been getting steadily worse and the trip times have taken longer,” he said. Bascik Transport managing director Tony Bascik said his drivers have been getting fatigued and have had to work longer hours than before the earthquakes.

world for a minute of simultaneous breastfeeding. Tandem feeding gets double points at the attempt, which is counted per child. Big Latch On began in New Zealand in 2005 with just 654 women taking part, but since then has grown to include women from over 170 countries. Last year 8862 children around the world were recorded breastfeeding simultaneously during the attempt, less
than 1000 away from the current simultaneous breastfeeding world record set in 2010. Ashburton coordinator Gena Orpwood said that they hoped to top the 12 women assembled locally for the attempt last year. Working with Plunket for the Big Latch On attempt opened possibilities for a valuable partnership, and she hoped the organisations would continue to work together in the future. “I think women see a lot of
mixed messages coming from different places, and that can be incredibly confusing for mums. It’s really important that we can come together to make sure we’re all saying the same thing and sending the same message.” The Big Latch On world record attempt will begin at 10am at the Ashburton Plunket Centre, 222 Cameron Street, and more information can be found on the Big Latch On Facebook page.

his is my first fortnightly column, which I will be sharing on alternate weeks with Council Chief Executive Brian Lester, and I would like to thank Coen and his team for inviting me to be part of the Ashburton Guardian’s new chapter. A recent BERL report on the performance of all districts in New Zealand, using a wide range of performance criteria, had Ashburton District second in the country. We have a fast-growing population, high levels of investment in our productive sectors and continue to add value locally to what we grow on the land. We have very low unemployment at about 1 per cent and economic growth, making us the second fastest growing district in New Zealand. This growth is based on production, not just a growing population. Success hasn’t come to this district by chance. It is down to the hard work, enterprise and innovation of the people who live here. And it is down to a willingness to adapt and to make the most of the opportunities that arise. A council can’t make success like this happen. It can do its best to smooth the way and it can support, but it is the people of this district that really make things happen. To keep pace with what is happening around us the council has had to look at itself and ask; have we got the recipe right? Area’s growth drives expansion By Michelle NelsoN
MICHELLE.N@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
Mid Canterbury’s agricultural prosperity is the driver behind PGG Wrightson’s move to open a new store in Ashburton on Monday. “We need to cater for the huge growth of our business in the recent past and projected future growth,” Mid Canterbury regional account manager for the rural servicing business Mark Hanrahan said. “Our business, providing services and support for local agriculture, depends on local farmers – when they do well, we do well.” “Business in Mid Canterbury right across our various divisions, including rural supplies, livestock, insurance, irrigation and pumping, real estate, seeds and grain, and support for the
process cropping sector through Fruitfed, is thriving and our new building reflects the confidence we have in the region’s on going prosperity. The new premises, which is neighbouring RX Plastics at 445 West St, will consolidate 55 staff who were previously working at the company’s Tancred Street, Tinwald and Dobson Street sites. “We are delighted to be able to bring everyone together in a modern, easily accessible site, where we will be able to provide our customers with a full range of products and services,” he said. The new site is four times larger than PGG Wrightson’s previous Tancred St premises, where the company’s local rural supplies retail operations have been located since 1951.

New Zealand’s lucrative reputation for high-quality dairy produce continues to get a battering from the Chinese media, despite efforts by this country’s government to reassure consumers in the world’s secondbiggest economy that Kiwi milk products are safe. In May China’s CCTV net-
work broadcast a series of highly critical news stories about NZ infant formula, which questioned manufacturing standards and claims some New Zealandmade brands were making in their Chinese marketing. This week, the China Daily reported that imported brands accounted for almost two-thirds of the 744 infant formula-related complaints received by the
China Consumers’ Association during the first half of this year. The article does not name any of the brands that received complaints, or which countries they were imported from. But New Zealand - which exports around $2b of dairy products to China a year, including around $200 million of infant formula - is mentioned repeatedly through the article. - NZH

Blasts rock Florida gas plant

In brief Face transplant Poland’s first face transplant patient was discharged from the hospital Tuesday, speaking with some effort at a press conference just 11 weeks after the extensive surgery that saved his life. The 33-year-old man said he owes his doctor “everything” following a skin-and-bone transplant on May 15, three weeks after losing his nose, upper jaw and cheeks in an accident at the brick factory where he worked. Doctors say it was the world’s fastest timeframe for such an operation. -AP

All the workers at the Florida propane gas plant rocked by massive explosions were accounted for after officials initially could not account for more than a dozen employees.
■ UNITED STATES Massive explosions rocked a central Florida propane gas plant, sending seven people to area hospitals. All of the workers at the plant were accounted for after officials initially could not account for more than a dozen employees. John Herrell of the Lake County Sheriff ’s Office said there were no fatalities despite massive blasts that ripped through the Blue Rhino propane plant.
Bieber drugs bust “At this point we have no fatalities being reported,” he said. “Management is comfortable saying all of those they knew were there have been accounted for.” One person injured in the explosion was listed in critical condition at University of Florida Health Shands Hospital. Two others were listed in critical condition at Orlando Regional Medical Centre and a spokeswoman there said a third patient was en
route, also listed as critical. Herrell said some others drove themselves to area hospitals. The Blue Rhino plant refilled propane tanks typically used for barbecues and other uses. Herrell said a crew of 24 to 26 people was working at the plant on an overnight shift when the explosions occurred around 11pm. Video footage on WESH-TV in Orlando showed fires burning through trucks used to trans-
port propane tanks, which were parked at the plant. The fire was sending plumes of smoke into the air hours after the blast. Emergency crews could also be seen massing nearby. Herrell said an evacuation zone was initially a 1.6-kilometre radius but had been reduced to an 800-metre radius. No injuries have been reported from residents in the neighbourhood and residents were later allowed to return to their homes. - AP

driver was recovered from the mangled wreckage, hours after the collision near the station at Granges-pres-Marnand, about 50 kilometres southwest of the capital, Bern. Emergency workers had to separate the front of the two
trains to reach the driver’s mangled cabin. The collision left the trains locked together, partly lifted off the tracks by the force of the collision. Of the 46 passengers on board the trains, 26 were taken to hospitals, none of them in
life-threatening condition. JeanChristophe Sauterel, a spokesman for Vaud canton (state) police, said the fire service will continue to comb the wreckage because authorities can’t yet rule out the possibility that someone may still be trapped inside. -AP
US border agents say they found marijuana on a bus with singer Justin Bieber’s tour as it crossed into Detroit from Windsor, Canada. US Customs and Border Protection spokesman Ken Hammond confirmed that the bus was stopped as it attempted to enter the US on the Ambassador Bridge. The singer was not on the bus at the time and performed later that night at Joe Louis Arena. -AP
Taliban escape Prison guards say they were totally overwhelmed when dozens of Taliban militants attacked their jail in north-west Pakistan, freeing over 250 prisoners. One of the policemen guarding the prison in the town of Dera Ismail Khan, Hidayat Ullah, said that he and several colleagues jumped into an armored vehicle at the main gate of the prison to fight back when the attack started. But Ullah says militants fired a mortar or rocket-propelled grenade at the vehicle, killing two policemen and wounding him and two others. -AP

Mid Canterbury farmer James Jarden snapped this phenomenal shot this week while bringing beef cows into the yard at Gawler Downs, Surrey Hill, near Mayfield. Metservice meteorologist Dan Corbett said this was produced by aircraft flying through the area. “This comes about because of the condensation trail from passing aircraft interacting with the Altocumulus cloud. The ice crystals from the contrail combine with the super cooled water droplets of the mid-level cloud and become a bigger and heavier layer of cloud,” he said. “This in turn sinks down below the original layer of cloud-like a ‘punch hole’ through the cloud layer.”

Hot beans
for a
cold winter’s night
By DANIEL NEMAN Toledo Blade
B
eans are an indispensable source of protein. Because they are so affordable and provide such a vital part of our nutrition, they are among the most widely consumed types of food on Earth. Some people even call them a magical fruit. At this time of year, when the air is crisp and chilled, when the bitter wind stings our faces, what is better and more comforting than to come home to a big pot of beans steaming on the stove? They’re warming, they’re hearty. There is nothing better to drive away the winter blues. On a couple of particularly cold days recently, we decided to explore beans in a variety of ways. We started out with a bean stew, flavoured with rosemary and garlic, and served atop farro, an age-old grain that in recent years has become trendy again. This particular recipe calls for dried beans, which need to simmer for two hours or so until they were soft. Only then could we begin to put together our meal. Once they were ready, into the beans went olive oil, garlic, an onion studded with a clove, and a bouquet garni of rosemary, thyme, and a bay leaf. We let that pot simmer away merrily while the flavours blended. Meanwhile, we prepared the farro. When the beans were done, we pureed half of them, stirred them back into the pot, and served it on top of the nutty-tasting farro. It was magic. For a meat-based entree, we roasted a chicken over a melange of chickpeas, lemons and carrots. It was quite
a healthy meal, except for the three tablespoons of butter that are rubbed into the chicken before cooking. That’s how to get the skin so crispy, which is one of the dish’s defining elements, but people watching their waistlines might want to eliminate that step. The chicken was flavoured with garam masala, a heady mixture of Indian spices. The beans and carrots on the bottom have both the garam masala and the lemons, an unexpected mixture that brought an exciting verve to the chickpeas and unified the dish into an exotic whole. CRISP ROASTED CHICKEN WITH CHICKPEAS 2 lemons 2 x 400g cans chickpeas, drained 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1-1/2 tablespoons garam masala 3 teaspoons salt 1-1/2 teaspoons pepper 1.5kg whole chicken, rinsed and patted dry 4 thyme sprigs 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened 450g carrots, peeled, trimmed, and cut into thick rounds For the gremolata: 3 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley 1/2 teaspoon finely grated lemon zest 1 small garlic clove, minced Preheat oven to 200 degrees Celsius. Quarter the lemons lengthwise and remove and discard any seeds. Thinly slice 6 of the
lemon quarters crosswise (you will get little triangles) and, in a bowl, toss them with the chickpeas, oil, 1/2 tablespoon garam masala, 1 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon pepper. Season the inside of the chicken cavity with 1 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon pepper. Fill the cavity with the remaining lemon wedges and thyme sprigs. Rub the outside of the chicken all over with the remaining 1 tablespoon garam masala, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1/2 teaspoon pepper. Rub the butter all over the skin. Scatter the carrots in the bottom of the largest roasting pan you have. Place a wire roasting rack over the carrots; arrange the chicken breast-side up, on the rack. Roast 30 minutes, stirring carrots occasionally. Scatter the chickpea mixture into the bottom of the roasting pan. Continue to roast until the chicken’s thigh juices run clear when pierced with a knife, 4560 minutes longer. Let the chicken rest 5 minutes before carving. Meanwhile, combine the parsley, lemon zest and garlic in a bowl. Spoon the carrot-chickpea mixture onto a platter; arrange the chicken on top. Sprinkle the gremolata over the dish and serve. HAM AND BEAN SOUP 3 tablespoons olive oil 2 celery stalks, diced 2 to 3 cloves garlic, minced 2 carrots, chopped into large chunks 1 large onion, diced
1 leftover ham bone or 2 ham hocks 2 x 450g can whole tomatoes and juice, broken up 10 cups water 2 cups chicken broth 1/2 teaspoon dried basil 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano 1 pinch red pepper flakes Pinch or two smoked hot paprika (or more to taste) Salt and freshly ground pepper 1 cheese rind, optional 450g can Cannellini beans, drained and rinsed 500g or more of pasta In a large stockpot, add about 3 tablespoons olive oil and saute the celery, garlic, carrots and onion. After a few minutes, add the ham bone or ham hocks and saute a few minutes more. Break up the canned tomatoes and add to pot with juices from the can. Let the tomatoes heat up, and add the water and broth. Add dried herbs, red pepper flakes, smoked hot paprika and salt and pepper to taste. Simmer soup for 1 to 2 hours on medium low. Add the cheese rind, if using, and canned beans. Continue to simmer for another hour. Remove bone, pick meat off, then add meat back into the soup. Season to taste. Cook the pasta according to package directions and drain. Add cooked pasta to soup. To serve, ladle soup into bowls and top with grated parmesan cheese, sauteed greens or favorite soup topping.
RED KIDNEY BEAN CURRY 1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil 1/4 cup chopped fresh ginger 1 medium onion, finely chopped 1 plum tomato, diced 3 cloves garlic, chopped 1 large green chili, chopped (optional) 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1 teaspoon ground coriander 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds 1/2 teaspoon ground tumeric 1/4 teaspoon cayenne tin of tomato puree 3 cups boiled red kidney beans or 30 ounces canned red kidney beans, undrained 1/2 cup chopped fresh coriander (or parsley, if you don’t like coriander) Heat oil in a deep sauce pan over medium heat for one minute. Add ginger, garlic, onion, green chili, and let sizzle for one minute. Add the tomato puree, salt and remaining spices and cook for an additional five minutes, stirring frequently. Add the kidney beans with water or canned red kidney beans (undrained) plus one additional cup of water, and tomatoes. Bring it to a boil, then reduce to medium heat and let cook uncovered for 10 minutes. Remove from heat. Garnish with coriander. Serve over rice or with naan. A dollop of plain yoghurt on top is nice.

Simple steps towards relieving stress
T
he feeling of being overloaded with stress is not pleasant. The tightening of muscles, headaches, anxiety, sleeplessness, a racing heartbeat and blood pressure that feels way too high. With overloaded schedules, deadlines and everyday hassles, stress seems inevitable. About 77 per cent of adults suffer from the adverse effects of stress, and one in four copes with long-term stress by indulging in “comfort eating”, which adds more stress. The good and the bad When you encounter a physical or emotional threat, the autonomic nervous system releases the stress hormones adrenaline, norepinephrine and cortisol to prepare for a quick reaction. This could be a good thing when you are dealing with dangerous situations, giving presentations or playing competitive sports. A certain amount of stress helps keep you focused and performing at the top of your game. This type of stress (acute stress) is short-lived. However, when stress keeps hanging around and is all-consuming, it can develop into chronic stress and negatively affect almost every system in the body, including suppressing the immune system.
Exercise and stress relief Exercise helps in the production of the brain’s neurotransmitters, known as “feel-good” endorphins. For stress release, select an activity you enjoy and make it a priority, including it in your lifestyle three to five times a week. Suggested activities Cardio and strength training burn off accumulated stress hormones, and release muscle tension. Yoga calms your mind and body as you work through breathing, strength and flexibility exercises. Tai chi helps reduce stress while toning muscles, increasing flexibility and improving balance. Meditation helps clear information overload with a basic technique that involves sitting in a relaxed, comfortable position in a quiet environment, ignoring any thoughts that may drift in and out. Relaxation breathing is to breathe deeply from the abdomen, not the chest. You will inhale more oxygen. Stress-relieving poses Modified Triangle Pose: Opens up chest and stretches sides of back, legs and hips. Keeping hips forward, step out to the side with right leg, bending
into right knee. Leaning into the right side, rest right forearm on thigh while raising left arm over shoulder. Turning head, look up at left hand, holding for several deep breaths. Repeat on opposite side. Seated Side Stretch: Targets shoulders, sides of back and obliques. Sitting on a pillow in a comfortable cross-legged position, place right hand on floor beside the hip, slightly bending right elbow. Keeping buttocks on floor, extend left arm by the ear, leaning into the right side. Hold for four deep breaths. Downward-facing Dog: A total-body stretch that strengthens arms, wrists, lower back, hamstrings and calves. Begin on hands and knees with hands placed slightly in front of shoulders and knees beneath hips, toes tucked under. Contract abdominals to keep back from “sinking” and raise hips toward ceiling, making an inverted V. Press chest toward knees, keeping Meditation is a great stress reliever. eyes on your toes. In brief Horo stars for Manly Unwanted by NRL woodenspooners Parramatta, Justin Horo was preparing to spend 2013 playing park football in France and back-packing around Europe. Instead, he’s gearing up for his first ever finals appearance as an integral member of Manly’s high-quality back-row. It’s a career rebirth that says as much about Horo’s ability as the Eels’ questionable recruitment and retention policy - that a player of his ilk was not wanted by a club that is about to run last for the second year in a row. Eels fan will be given a stark reminder of what might have been on Saturday, when Horo returns to Parramatta Stadium for the first time since his departure from the club. - AAP
Two weeks for SBW Sonny Bill Williams will miss the next two games of the Sydney Roosters’ NRL minor premiership push after submitting an early guilty plea over his shoulder charge on Willie Mason. The superstar back-rower has copped a two-game ban for a careless high tackle on Newcastle forward and former teammate Mason on Sunday and will miss Friday night’s match against Penrith and Saturday week’s clash with Canberra. The Roosters are second on the ladder, two points behind neighbouring arch rivals South Sydney, with six rounds to go before the finals series. - AAP

RUGBY LEAGUE
Mateo revels in the odd BY MICHAEL BROWN Odd years seem to go well for Feleti Mateo and the Warriors second-rower will hope 2013 ends at least as favourably as the last couple. In 2009, Mateo was in the Parramatta side who won 11 of their last 12 games to storm into the grand final against Melbourne and in 2011 was part of a Warriors outfit who played on the same stage against Manly after winning nine of their last 12. On both occasions they lost the game that mattered most but getting there was a significant achievement. The Warriors of 2013 are on an impressive run of seven wins from their last eight, and are starting to gain traction on the NRL ladder after a dreadful start to the season. They sit in ninth, but on equal points with the eighth-placed Knights and only two points behind the Bulldogs in fifth, with six games remaining. Mateo doesn’t see any similarities between the seasons, other than the fact they are winning games. “In ‘09 we had Jarryd Hayne and everything he touched turned into gold,” he said. “For us, we have a different guy stepping up every week - Shaun [Johnson] is playing great, Kevin [Locke] is playing great
and our forwards are going forward. It’s a collective effort and that’s what is so pleasing about it. “The good thing about our little run is we are doing it quietly and not making too much noise. “We are doing what we need to do, nothing too flash and just working hard for each other. The way we are going now, we won’t lose through lack of effort.” Mateo has expended a fair bit of energy over the past few seasons. On Saturday he will play his 71st consecutive game for the Warriors - he hasn’t missed a match since joining the club at the start of 2011 - and 102nd in the NRL when he tackles Cronulla at Mt Smart Stadium. The last game Mateo was absent for was in 2009, when he was playing for the Eels as they beat the Warriors 40-4 at Parramatta Stadium. It’s a remarkable record, and his NRL run will overtake the 101 consecutive games Stacey Jones played for the Warriors between 1995 and 1999. Mateo’s Warriors run also surpasses the 70 in a row Micheal Luck played b e t we e n 2 0 0 6 a n d 2008,
but it is still short of the 92-straight games Simon Mannering played from 2006-09. “I have surprised myself a bit playing every week,” Mateo said. “I am never 100 per cent but credit to the physio and the way the club run the programme and recovery.” Unsurprisingly, Warriors coach Matt Elliott has stuck
with the same 17 who toppled Melbourne 30-22 last weekend. One of his biggest concerns, however, will be sorting out his right-sided defence which has been a weakness all season and which was badly exposed by the Storm. “We go from a really tough opponent in Melbourne to another one in the Sharks,” Elliott said. - APNZ
Mike Hussey says it would be a horrible feeling to be back in Australia’s dressing room as the tourists stumble from one Ashes loss to another. However the 79-Test veteran is confident new coach Darren Lehmann can provide captain Michael Clarke’s inexperienced lineup with some added confidence against England’s seasoned pros. Defeat in the third Test starting on Thursday in Manchester would equal Australia’s worst-ever losing run. “I feel for the guys,” Hussey said. “I know they’re very proud to be wearing the baggy green cap and I’m sure we’ll see a revival in the last few Test matches.” - AAP
Boult eyes up 2015 World Cup
Itinerary delights administrators
Del Potro eyes top four

Juan Martin del Potro, coming off an epic Wimbledon semi-final loss to world No.1 Novak Djokovic, says he is ready to close the gap on the world’s top tennis players. The seventhranked Argentine is the men’s top seed for this week’s ATP and WTA Washington Open, his first event since losing the longest semi-final in Wimbledon history 7-5 4-6 7-6 6-7 6-3 after four hours and 43 minutes. Del Potro, 24, is the only player since the 2005 Australian Open, outside of the star foursome, to win a grand slam singles crown. – AFP
Trent Boult was a toddler when the last cricket World Cup was played in New Zealand, and now he has 19 months to prove he should be involved in the next one on these shores at the start of 2015. The 24-year-old pace bowler is firmly established in New Zealand’s test side but is only on the periphery when it comes to the coloured clothing. He’s played eight one-dayers and three Twenty20 internationals but his numbers haven’t done a lot to set the pulse racing so he has it all in front of him to claim a place in New Zealand’s side for the 50-over global tournament. Boult was on hand with a collection of other Black Caps at the 2015 World Cup’s offi-

cial launch in Wellington yesterday, where the draw was announced and host cities and venues across New Zealand and Australia were also confirmed. New Zealand will play in Pool A alongside co-hosts Australia, England, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and two qualifiers who are yet to be decided. Pool B is made up of South Africa, India, the West Indies, Ireland, Zimbabwe, Pakistan and a qualifier. “It’s a big opportunity for me over these next 19 months to push my case and prove myself as a match-winner for the New Zealand cricket team,” Boult said. “It’s something I want to play in and I’ve grown up wanting to do. So I think it’s a massive opportunity and it’s awesome that it’s here on our home stage.” - APNZ
Four months ago Therese Walsh (pictured) was downplaying the prospect of New Zealand having an equal share in the 2015 Cricket World Cup. Getting a decent chunk of the blue riband matches would be a battle. Hosting a semifinal? Unlikely. So yesterday’s news on the venues for cup games has delighted New Zealand cricket administrators. A 50-50 split of pool games, using the same number of venues as Australia, and a semi-final at Eden Park are all reasons to celebrate. Walsh, who chairs the NZ arm of the World Cup organising committee, admits she
partly downplayed New Zealand’s prospects in March, but said the goalposts had also moved significantly in the intervening period. “I certainly didn’t want a strong expectation or be raising people’s hopes in terms of a semi-final. Until a couple of weeks ago we didn’t have a confirmed match schedule.” A range of hurdles were cleared and Walsh and her team have come up with an outstanding package in terms of New Zealand’s involvement in the tournament. Big winners out of yesterday? Nelson’s Saxton Oval, which made a strong late surge into the reckoning. The venue is being lined up for a game on either the West Indian or Indian visits next summer. - NZH

Kiwis in the finals
Shield drought broken East Coast blindside flanker Brent Ingram yesterday became the first Coast player to score a try in a Ranfurly Shield challenge against Waikato at Ruatoria. No matter that the ITM Cup first division oufit scored 10 in the win in front of a crowd of 2000. The Coast have challenged for the Shield on six previous occasions - starting with 42-0 point loss to Wellington in 1953 - and their only points came in 1997 when Nigel Ormsby landed two penalties in a 115-3 defeat by Auckland in Ruatoria and two Mano Flutey penalties against Canterbury in 2002. - NZH
Clarke ‘should be at 3’ Former Test skipper Ian Chappell says Michael Clarke’s refusal to promote himself to No.3 for the third Ashes Test is crazy. The bold move won’t happen because captain Clarke is happier at No.5, despite the inexperience of his top six. “They need (David) Warner in the side but they don’t need him batting at six. He should be opening but I fear he won’t be,” Chappell said. - AAP

New Zealand’s Lauren Boyle on the starting blocks at the FINA Swimming World Championships in Barcelona, Spain. Lauren Boyle backed up her bronze medal in the 400m freestyle by qualifying for the 1500m final at the world championships in Barcelona yesterday, and Gareth Kean will also race for a medal in the final of the 100m backstroke. The 1.94cm Kean produced a strong performance from an outside lane to grab the final qualifying spot for today’s final, a session which will also feature Boyle who sliced 14 seconds off her her own national 1500m freestyle record to finish sixth fastest in the heats of the nonOlympic distance. Team-mate Matthew Stanley qualified 11th fastest for the semi-finals of the 200m freestyle but did not advance after finishing eighth in 1:48.35, which was slower than his heat swim.
Starting in lane one, Kean clocked 53.81s to finish fourth in the first semi-final, edging out short course world champion Radoslaw Kawecki of Poland by 1/100th of a second in what proved the battle for the last place in the final. He watched as only four swimmers bettered his time in the second semi-final to ensure he will start in the final. It was a good return to form for a swimmer who disappointed at last year’s Olympics. “It felt better and more in tune with racing again,” Kean said. “Going into that race in the side lane I knew I had nothing to lose and just go out there to better myself. “It is a bigger show tonight. There are more people in the stands and it makes everything a lot more exciting so the key is
to keep yourself grounded. You just have to go down and back in a lane so you don’t have to do anything else and just give it your all.” Also in the morning heats, Boyle clocked 16:02.90 to finish third behind 2011 world champion Lotte Friis of Denmark who was the fastest qualifier for the 1500m freestyle in 15:49.26. Boyle’s time was a tick under 14 seconds faster than her New Zealand record of 16:16.83 set at the New Zealand open championships in March. The 25-year-old set a solid schedule, not drawn into the blistering early pace of Friis who was well under the world record split in the early stages. The Kiwi went through the 400m in 4:12, the 800m in 8:30 and the 1200 in 12:48 in a controlled performance.
Friis was fastest overall, a shade ahead of 400m gold medallist Katie Ledecky (USA) with Chilean veteran Kristel Kobrich third fastest, with the trio the only swimmers under the 16-minute barrier. “It is not an event the girls swim very often so Lauren’s entry time was the national record from the trials,” Swimming New Zealand head coach David Lyles said. “To take 14 seconds off at any age and certainly with Lauren as being an elder swimmer, is a phenomenal effort. “Like the 400m, she was in an early heat and had to make sure of her qualification. She was in with the world record holder in Lotte Friis and had to put her foot down. She did that and I was very pleased with it.” - APNZ

Man United victorious in Hong Kong BY PETER STEBBINGS Manchester United saw off a spirited Kitchee 5-2 yesterday in Hong Kong to give David Moyes just his second victory as manager of the English Premier League champions. Danny Welbeck, Chris Smalling, Fabio Da Silva and substitute Adnan Januzaj put United 4-0 up after 49 minutes, Danny Welbeck: Goalscorer but they eased off and plucky
Kitchee scored two fine goals on a humid night in front of a sell-out 40,000 crowd at the Hong Kong Stadium and its “killer pitch”. United head home after chalking up two wins, two losses and one draw on their preseason tour. “I thought our players played very well on a difficult pitch and made it look like a good pitch,” said Moyes, who added he had
no updates on the Wayne Rooney transfer saga. Chelsea are after the England striker, 27, but United and Moyes continue to say the forward - said to be angry and confused - is not for sale. “I thought we played well and I thought it was an exciting game for the supporters to see as well,” added the former Everton boss, who took over from Alex Ferguson in July. - AFP
Wallabies coach Ewen McKenzie admits he’s keeping an eye on when Brumbies winger Henry Speight will become eligible for the Wallabies. Unfortunately for Fijian-born Speight, playing for Waikato in New Zealand’s National Provincial Championship (NPC) means he likely won’t be able to play for the Wallabies until the spring tour of Europe kicking off in November. The 25-year-old flyer has been Australia’s highest Super Rugby try-scorer over the past two seasons. - AAP
Another dope Former Tour de France sprint ace Erik Zabel has resigned from his position with the Professional Cycling Council following his doping admissions. The 43-yearold gave an interview published on the Sueddeutsche Zeitung website in which he admitted to using EPO between 1996 and 2004. The six-time Tour green jersey winner’s confession came a few days after a French government commission released the names of a number of cyclists whose retroactively tested samples from 1998 and 1999 had come up positive in 2004. – AFP
Striker dies in Qatar Ecuador striker Christian Benitez has died suddenly in Qatar at the age of 27. Speaking to Ecuadorian Gama TV, his agent Jose Chamorro said that Benitez, known as “Chucho”, had suffered a heart-attack. He had complained of abdominal pains and was transferred to a hospital, where he died on Monday, Chamorro said. Benitez, who was top scorer in the Mexican league last season with Club America, had just signed for Qatari outfit El-Jaish and had travelled to the club to undergo a medical before – AFP completing his move.

Sin Bin shows the way home
Craig Thornley gets Sin Bin home in the Qualifying Trot at the Chertsey Trotting Club’s trials yesterday. Sin Bin, a threeyear-old Pegasus Spur-Jo Anne gelding, held out a strong challenge from Ottawa (Carl Middleton), and recorded 3-12.7 for the 2400m journey, eventually winning by half a length, with Hellavahanover (Mark Jones) in third one and a quarter lengths back. Sin Bin covered the last 800 in 60.8, with the last 400 coming up in 29.6, a mile rate of 2-09.1. photo tetsuro mitomo 300713-tm-021

In brief Shield drought broken Christchurch City Council has welcomed news that it will host some ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 matches but says the city’s ability to host them is dependent on what decision is made by the Environment Court about the further redevelopment of Hagley Oval. The legal process around the park is ongoing. The city hasn’t hosted an international since the February 22, 2011 earthquake. Its last match was an ODI against Pakistan on January 29 that year. - APNZ
‘Black ops’ denied Essendon’s former high performance manager Dean Robinson has indicated the AFL club employed sports scientist Stephen Dank to run last year’s supplements program as a “black ops” operation. The assertion has been emphatically denied by the Bombers. Robinson was stood down by the Bombers in February when they asked ASADA and the AFL to investigate them and he resigned from the club last Friday. - AAP
Jackson out of WNBL The manager of Lauren Jackson says he is stunned the Canberra Capitals have failed to meet a contract deadline, ensuring the Opals superstar will not play in the upcoming WNBL season. But John Elliott said a disappointed Jackson would still honour a deal to play for the Capitals in the 2014-15 and 2015-16 WNBL seasons. After Jackson failed to play a game for Canberra this season due to a chronic hamstring injury, Elliott amended her Capitals contract in mid-June so his star charge could run out in 2013-14. - AAP
Rumours quashed Canberra fullback Anthony Milford has quashed rumours he’ll move back to Brisbane to join the Broncos next year despite suffering from homesickness. The 19-year-old sensation was linked to the Broncos last week after reports emerged the Brisbane junior wanted to move back home to be closer to his family. While Milford is contracted to the Raiders until the end of 2014, it was suggested a family illness get-out clause could allow him to switch clubs to Brisbane in 2014. However Milford has fronted the media to end the rumours. – AAP
Wiebe wins senior open Foul-mouthed American golfer Mark Wiebe won the Senior British Open after beating German great Bernhard Langer in an epic play-off at Royal Birkdale. Wiebe, infamous for his expletive tirade at a tournament in the US last year, made headlines for more positive reasons when he prevailed on the fifth extra hole. He and Langer had been unable to finish the tournament on schedule when bad light forced the play-off to be postponed after two halved holes. - AFP

Tall Blacks on winning roll A young New Zealand basketball side accounted for the Mississauga Power - a Toronto-based all-star outfit - 92-65 at the four-team tournament at Szenchen, China, yesterday. Ahead 39-33 at halftime, the Tall Blacks took command in the third quarter (27-14) then let their rookies close out the match. With several experienced performers unavailable for this Chinese tour, coach Nenad Vucinic has invested heavily in promising youngsters to help develop depth in the international programme. The playing line-up that closed out the game was an allrookie combination of guards Izayah Mauriohooho Le’afa (16 points) and Brook Ruscoe, forwards Reuben Te Rangi (19) and Jordan Ngatai, and centre Jack Salt (17). Salt has been starting in the middle, but came off the bench last night for 16 points and eight rebounds. Mauriohooho Le’afa started and logged 14 minutes at the point and Ruscoe hit a pair of three-pointers for eight points in a three-minute cameo.
After two wins, the Tall Blacks will look to extend their streak this morning against local Chinese Basketball League side Liaoning, who beat the Canadians by 18 points two nights ago. The eight-game China tour is being used as preparation for next month’s Oceania Championship home-and-away series against Australia. “Initially, I think we were a bit surprised by their physicality, but we did a good job of weathering the storm,” veteran forward Casey Frank said of their opposition. “The Canadians actually played pretty well together, better than you’d expect from an allstar team like that. “But during that third quarter, our senior leadership stretched the lead out to about 20, with Mika
CRICKET
Vukona doing a good job of setting the tone with his determination and athleticism. “We had all our young guys out on the court at the end, and it was a lot of fun for us older guys and the coaching staff to watch them dominate.”
Guard Corey Webster matched Salt’s output with 16 points to lead the Tall Blacks scoring for the fourth straight outing. Tom Abercrombie began to settle into the rotation after his late arrival to China, contributing 13 points, five rebounds and two blocks, and Vukona had nine points and 10 rebounds. New Zealand 92 (Corey Webster 16, Jack Salt 16, Tom Abercrombie 13, Casey Frank 11, Everard Bartlett 10, Mika Vukona 9, Brook Ruscoe 8, Reuben Te Rangi 7, Jordan Ngatai 2) Mississauga Power 65. - APNZ

Umpires influenced Wallabies seeking Bledisloe redemption by DRS system BY BEN HORNE There’s a growing belief that the controversial decision review system (DRS) is distorting the umpire’s view of what constitutes an lbw dismissal. Australian opener Chris Rogers knows one thing - as a cricketer, DRS has shown him to be a pretty poor judge. Rogers has copped two contentious lbw decisions from on-field umpires during the series, both going against him for different reasons. When tight lbw decisions are sent upstairs, more often than not replays show the ball hitting - even if it’s by the slimmest of margins. Rogers says the technology has in all likelihood started to influence umpires into thinking more balls are hitting the stumps. “Naturally, if you’re an umpire seeing more balls hit the stumps then it’s probably swaying your opinion,” he said.
“I think that DRS has changed a lot of people’s understanding of what’s going on. As a cricketer I’ve made a pretty poor umpire so far. This is the first time I’ve been involved with it. It’s a bit of a learning process, and you have to learn quickly. “But I don’t know, that’s their job. It’s the same for both sides and as a team we’ve got to try and use this review system better than we have.” At Trent Bridge Rogers challenged one that appeared to be going down leg, but hawk eye showed it clipping leg - enough for the umpire’s decision to stand. At Lord’s, he decided against challenging a Graeme Swann full toss that was given out, but replays showed was missing by some margin. DRS controversies have plagued the series so far particularly decisions to give Jonathan Trott out at Trent Bridge and Ashton Agar at Lord’s. - AAP
BY DARREN WALTON Wallabies stalwart Adam Ashley-Cooper says finally winning back the Bledisloe Cup would be ample compensation for losing a once-in-a-lifetime series against the British and Irish Lions. New coach Ewen McKenzie will assemble his 40-man training squad in Sydney on Monday ahead of Australia’s Bledisloe Cup and Rugby Championship opener against the world champion All Blacks at ANZ Stadium on August 17. Not one member of the squad has experienced trans-Tasman series success, with Australia last holding the coveted Cup in 2002, and Ashley-Cooper says it’s an enticing opportunity to bounce back from the deflating thirdTest loss to
the Lions. “The guys were a little flat post (Lions) campaign but it was easy to put it behind you and move on with what’s coming up next,” he said. “It would be ample compensation and it all would be forgotten once you claim that Bledisloe.” Even before entering camp, Ashley-Cooper says McKenzie already has the Wallabies on their toes, with no-one guaranteed a Test jumper in a new era for Australian rugby after five years with New Zealander Robbie Deans at the helm. McKenzie made it clear when he named his preliminary squad, which will be cut to 30 on August 9, that he was “not fixed on who will start” against the All Blacks. - AAP Ewen McKenzie

Trials win for Sin Bin The Steven McRae-trained three-year-old Sin Bin, with Craig Thornley at the helm, gets home to comfortably beat the qualifying time at the Chertsey Trotting Club’s trials yesterday. Carl Middleton challenged strongly down the straight with Ottawa, but Sin Bin held on to win by half a length at the post.

Ko aiming for Open history If her first practice round at the Home of Golf is anything to go by, Lydia Ko is in for an exciting week at the British Open which tees off on Thursday night. The world No 1 amateur, who has finished in the top-10 in seven professional events in 2013, continued her momentum in her first attempt at the most famous links in the world. “Played St Andrews Old Course for the first time! It was sooo fun! Shot -7! Was a great experience,” Ko posted on Facebook. The 16-year-old finished in a share of 17th and as the leading amateur at last
year’s British Open and is looking to become the youngest major winner in history. American Morgan Pressel was 18 years, 10 months and nine days old when she won the 2007 Kraft Nabisco Championship and Tom Morris was 17 when he won the 1868 British Open. She has finished as the low amateur in four of her five majors and was runner-up in the amateur honours in the 2013 US Open. “I am very excited for The Open,” Ko said. “It’s played at St Andrews and that’s why I’m more excited with the history and tradition at this
course. I am very lucky to get the opportunity.” Ko earns every opportunity she gets. She has never missed the cut in 22 professional events in a streak that dates back to the 2010 New Zealand women’s open and it’s a run that has seen her climb to a world ranking of 17. “The pot bunkers at St Andrews will be really tricky,” she said. “Links golf definitely makes it much more interesting. I like it. I am aiming for hopefully a better position than last year. It should be a fun week.” Two weeks ago Ko finished in a tie for seventh at the Marathon
Classic in Ohio on the LPGA Tour and was content with her performance. She is pleased with how she has played throughout 2013. “I had a cold, so I wasn’t at my best condition [in Ohio]. I just did the same as I do for every other round. It was nothing special. “My form is pretty good. Being top 10 in any tournament means it was a really good week.” World No 1 Inbee Park will attempt to become the first player, male or female, to win four major championships in one season. - APNZ
