Have a Meowy Christmas, says Blacky BY TONI WILLIAMS
TONI.W@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
Blacky the Wheelchair Cat is “paying it forward” and donating gifts to children to spread some Christmas cheer. The winner of an online competition for Nilfisk – a video
montage set to the music of MC Hammer’s Can’t Touch This - Blacky has donated his monetary winnings and brought presents for Birthright Ashburton. Owner Louise Hopkins said Blacky was the victim of a hit and run accident three years ago.
He suffered spinal nerve damage and can only drag his back legs. The gifts, for boys and girls of all ages, would be placed under the Birthright Ashburton tree at Heartland Bank. When Blacky had his accident, it was touch and go to his sur-
vival, she said. But in the end, so many people helped fund a wheelchair for the five-year-old feline, who then became Blacky the Wheelchair Cat. He now has his own facebook page and has more than 8000
friends. Ms Hopkins said in Blacky’s time of need people were there to help and now it was his time to repay the favour. “Blacky doesn’t care what he has got, as long as he has food and is loved.”
