Blacky the Wheelchair Cat is “paying it forward” and donating gifts to children to spread some Christmas cheer.

The winner of an online competition for Nilfisk – a video

montage set to the music of MC Hammer’s Can’t Touch This - Blacky has donated his monetary winnings and brought presents for Birthright Ashburton.

Owner Louise Hopkins said Blacky was the victim of a hit and run accident three years ago.

He suffered spinal nerve damage and can only drag his back legs.

The gifts, for boys and girls of all ages, would be placed under the Birthright Ashburton tree at Heartland Bank.

When Blacky had his accident, it was touch and go to his sur-

vival, she said.

But in the end, so many people helped fund a wheelchair for the five-year-old feline, who then became Blacky the Wheelchair Cat. He now has his own facebook page and has more than 8000

friends.

Ms Hopkins said in Blacky’s time of need people were there to help and now it was his time to repay the favour.

“Blacky doesn’t care what he has got, as long as he has food and is loved.”

Vanessa and Tracker are going great guns,” posted the happy father. Last Saturday, Prime sports anchor Andrew Mulligan and wife Emma had their first child, a son. The Crowd Goes Wild presenter said Cooper was three weeks early.

Warriors co-owner Eric Watson and partner Lisa Henrekson also announced the birth of a son, Aidan, last Sunday. Watson’s four children include a son from a previous relationship.

Remembering loved ones with special stars

The tree, in the Arcade until tomorrow, gives people a chance to remember loved ones by writing a message on a star.

Each star costs $2 and money raised will go to Palliative Care.

People bought the stars for a

variety of reasons, often it was to remember people who had died, others remembered family or friends unable to share Christmas.

It could be quite emotional for some and it was not unusual for people to buy their star and

take it away to write their message. The Remembrance stars will be sold until Christmas Eve between 10am to 4pm.

Outside those hours people can still buy a star from clothing store Chicago Joes, in the Arcade.

Cash injection for local anti-bullying campaign By myles Hume

A district-wide project to crackdown on bullies has been given another 12-month cash injection.

Think First project co-ordinator John Hobbs, who is leading an initiative to reduce bullying in Mid Canterbury, confirmed this week the Safer Ashburton initiative received funding to continue for another year.

“I think the amount of support we have been shown with the funding and the community shows people acknowledge there is a big issue here in our district,” he said.

Prior to Think First being established, Safer Ashburton conducted a scoping document, surveying 176 people between eight and 20, which found cyber bullying, brawling among teenage girls and Year nine bullying as major concerns.

Think First co-ordinator John Hobbs at the launch of the antibullying website earlier this year.

Mr Hobbs was then tasked with establishing a community action programme, dubbed Think First.

Since then, he has established a youth executive board to as-

sist with projects, created a website, Facebook page, produced bullying scenario videos and worked with 650 teens on anti-bullying workshops, among others.

“This funding should take us through to 2015 which is pretty exciting because we still have a lot of things planned for next year, and obviously the funding providers feel we are reaching their goals and our own.”

Mr Hobbs said for next year he was planning to produce a video “with a few famous faces”, a parents role model campaign and a free Facebook app.

“I believe we are making a difference, obviously things don’t change overnight, it’s more about the short term,” he said.

Ashburton College principal Grant McMillan said Mr Hobbs was really starting to get through to local teens.

“I think the challenge we have is to equip young people to deal with stuff they have never had to deal with before, so people like John who understand how to communicate well and being local really helps,” he said.

A girl has been flown to hospital in Blenheim after falling off the back of a quad bike. The Westpac Rescue Helicopter was sent to the incident in the Marlborough Sounds yesterday afternoon. The girl had been on the back of the quad bike when she fell off and suffered head injuries, the Life Flight Trust said. The helicopter was able to land nearby, and the injured girl was assessed and treated by the paramedic on board. She was then flown to the Wairau Hospital emergency department for further treatment.

Sleepless runner Ultra-distance runner Kim Allen has met her dual goals of breaking the world record for running without sleep and surpassing the 500 kilometre mark. She passed the previous women’s record of 486km shortly before 6pm yesterday at Auckland Domain, and reached the 500km goal just over two hours later. The 47-yearold started her quest at 6am on Thursday, and had slowed to a walk in the final laps. Supporter Michael Rodliffe said the 486km record passed with no fanfare, as they were saving celebration for the 500km mark. “We kept it quiet, we haven’t actually told her yet,” he said. “We didn’t want her to give her an excuse to stop. In two hours time when she’s finished the 500, we’ll celebrate.” - APNZ

Indecent exposure Police are looking for a man who exposed himself to two teenage girls as they walked through an Invercargill park yesterday.

Between 3-4pm the girls were walking through Queens Park when a man, who they thought to be about 30, indecently exposed himself to them. He was described as Caucasian, short, of medium build with short shaved dark brown hair. He was wearing a white t shirt, faded blue jeans and carrying a bag across his chest.

Ashburton man’s mystery injuries

Police are seeking information from members of the public after a man was found lying injured at Netherby in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Sergeant Bryan Ennis said the 26-year-old had been on his way home from a private function, and it was a mystery as to how he came to be lying on the footpath.

He was found by a passer-by about 2.30am, at the corner of Albert Street and Rapley Street.

He may have been lying there for about 45 minutes. He had a head injury and markings on his body.

He was taken by ambulance to Ashburton Hospital. He was discharged later in the day but remained “sore” from his injuries.

“There was definitely vehicles and people in the area at that time. Anybody who might be able to assist is asked to phone the police,” Mr Ennis said.

Ashburton police can be contacted on 307-8400.

Investigation into worker’s death The family of a worker killed at the Port of Lyttelton on Saturday morning say he had only just begun work and was rebuilding his life after his marriage failed.

Warren Ritchie, 49, died after being struck in the chest by machinery while in the hold of a vessel berthed at the port.

His mother Helen Dungey, 68, said the family was struggling with the loss of a “caring and gentle man”.

“He had been hit very hard by the break-up with his wife, it broke his heart, and he had spent a year wallowing, really,” Ms Dungey said.

Unions have called for a review of health and safety at the Port of Lyttelton after Mr Ritchie’s death and another death last month of contractor Bill Frost.

Mr Ritchie’s late father Barry was also a waterfront worker, and he came from a long line of

hard workers from the Lyttelton area, Ms Dungey said.

“After he’d decided to get back to work, he went casual at the port for a while and he’d just been full time for a few months.

He’d got himself a room in Lyttelton and he was just getting on with things really.”

Ms Dungey said she had heard only a little of what had occurred in the accident. She said workmates were with him immediately afterwards and he hadn’t suffered.

“There’ll be a big investigation. I believe it’s a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. I’ve been talking with the Maritime Union, the port’s people and the health and safety ones. They’ve been all very good with the family.”

Power cut points to ceiling fire

The lights went out in a Burnett Street household on Friday night, and then the occupants smelt smoke.

Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade chief Alan Burgess said the occupants then did the right thing, by dialling 111, shortly before 10.15pm.

Firefighters found flames in the ceiling, around a light fitting.

Mr Burgess said there was damage to the ceiling in a half metre radius around the light fitting, and it was evident the fire had been burning for “some time”. He agreed it was fortunate the lights had gone out and the smoke was smelt prior

to the occupants going to bed.

“It’s a bit of a ‘who knows’ one, not sure what the outcome may have been,” Mr Burgess said.

He said it was unknown what had caused the fire, whether the light fitting had been faulty, installed incorrectly, or perhaps batts were holding in heat around it.

Papal honour for pair

Two Mid Canterbury women have been recognised for their service to the Catholic Church.

Pat Duncan and Maree O’Neill were awarded the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice medal.

In Latin it means ‘For Church and Pope’. They received it for outstanding contribution to their parishes in Ashburton and Rakaia, in the diocese of Christchurch.

Along with the medal they also received a diploma and insignia – a badge to wear on formal occasions.

Between them they have given more than 70 years of service to their respective parishes – Miss Duncan at St Ita’s Church in Rakaia and Mrs O’Neill at Holy Name Church in Ashburton.

They were nominated for the honour by Father Geoff Gray at Holy Name.

And their nominations went through scrutiny at each level to

ensure they deserved the papal medal. Both women were humble recipients.

“It’s a huge honour, it is an honour. It’s also a humbling experience because a lot of people do a lot of good work,” said Mrs O’Neill.

She said it was especially nice to be receiving it in this year of faith and under Pope Francis who was referred to as “the people’s Pope’.

He understood modern issues

and people related to him.

“I don’t know him, however I feel as though I do.”

Mrs O’Neill worked as parish secretary for 35 years. In her time she ran the office for five parish priests.

“They had different personalities but were all good to work for,” she said diplomatically.

Miss Duncan was also parish secretary, albeit as a volunteer.

She volunteered for more than 35 years at St Ita’s and was honoured, not only to be a recipient, but one from Rakaia.

“I am very, very honoured. I have found it extremely humbling...but felt it was an honour for the parish (given its size).”

The work both women did for their parishes was done with open heart and because of their faith, they never anticipated this sort of recognition.

“You don’t expect these things,” said Miss Duncan.

“What you do at the parish is part of your lifestyle,” said Mrs O’Neill.

Skip royals, Brown urged

By John Weekes Auckland councillor Dick Quax, an outspoken critic of Mayor Len Brown, has called on him to withdraw from hosting Prince William and wife Catherine early next year.

The couple and their baby George will visit New Zealand in April.

On Saturday, Quax said Brown should not be greeting the royals after his two-year extramarital affair with Bevan Chuang and a review that found he had accepted free hotel rooms and upgrades.

Toxic algal bloom alert Holidaymakers are being reminded to be on alert for toxic algal (cyanobacteria) blooms this summer.

Blooms of cyanobacteria are a health risk and can cause irritation of the skin, eyes, nose and mouth on contact with water or inhaling droplets and are particularly harmful to dogs.

Medical officer of health Ramon Pink said it is the time of year when toxic algal blooms can proliferate in recreational waterways.

“Environment Canterbury frequently monitors popular swimming sites but not all recreational waterways can be observed, so people need to look out themselves for these blooms whenever they go near any waterway – whether that is a river or a lake,” Dr Pink said.

If ingested toxins can create symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea, cramps, nausea, muscle tremors, fast breathing, twitching, paralysis and convulsions.

“Children and dogs are very susceptible to toxin exposure because they may ingest or play with the mats,” he says.

Dr Pink urges anyone experiencing a serious reaction with any of these symptoms, who may have been in contact with cyanobacteria, to seek medical attention urgently.

“If you, your child or your pet has come into contact with these mats, seek medical or veterinarian advice as soon as possible.”

In rivers the cyanobacteria is usually in a ‘benthic’ form. It grows on rocks and stones on the bottom of the river, forming a dense brown, green, black or purple growth, which can become detached and accumulate along edges of rivers.

Quax and fellow councillors Chris Darby, Linda Cooper and Bill Cashmore said they did not expect Brown to be mayor a year from now.

Arthur Anae, one of Brown’s biggest backers on the council,

expected him to stay until 2016, but added: “As for the next term, I’m pretty sure in his own mind he realises it would be a dumb thing to try and restand.”

Mayoral spokesman Dan Lambert said Brown was committed to seeing through his term.

He said the mayor was still in Auckland on Saturday and had not yet decided where to spend his Christmas holiday.

Some local politicians were convinced that Labour MP Phil Goff was considering a tilt at the mayoralty if Brown resigned but Goff dismissed the idea and blamed mischievous

right-wing councillors for the rumours.

Meanwhile, Brown critic councillor Cameron Brewer lamented a “ratepayer-funded smear campaign” after he was criticised for failing to make a formal declaration to the council over his MediaWorks junket to Queensland.

“This is all entirely predictable when you have a mayor fighting for his political survival and spin doctors out there running a strategy of interference and diversion on his behalf.”

Lambert dismissed the claim.

Shoppers out in force

Fire contained Firefighters have contained a large bush fire that came dangerously close to destroying the main power feed between the North and South Islands. A house and several out buildings were destroyed in the blaze at Port Underwood, 20km east of Picton, but fire crews managed to save a further five houses that were threatened by the 6 hectare blaze.

Two firefighters also suffered minor injuries, one from the Koromiko Rural Fire Force who was overcome by smoke and a Fire Service member who bruised his ribs and a kidney when he slipped and fell. The fire started at 3pm on Saturday when a tree came down across powerlines.

Vehicle crash A person was killed after the car they were driving crashed in Bay of Plenty on Saturday. Police said the vehicle rolled on Troutbeck Road, Galatea, south of Whakatane, shortly after 6pm. The sole occupant suffered serious injuries and was transported by rescue helicopter. They died from their injuries on their way to hospital.

The police serious crash unit was investigating.

Car dangles from cliff Two people had to be rescued from a vehicle that was left dangling off a cliff after it crashed off a rural Coromandel road on Saturday afternoon. Emergency services, including a Westpac rescue helicopter crew, were called to the crash on the gravel TapuCoroglen Road just before 5pm.

A Northern Fire Communications spokesperson said they found the vehicle “dangling off a cliff” 10 metres below the road and but held up by a tree. Two people were inside the vehicle.

Tamihere unrepentant East Street was much busier than usual for a Sunday yesterday as Christmas shoppers were out in force. Shops which do not usually open on a Sunday but did yesterday included Health 2000. Owner operator Bob McDonald said he thought trade might quieten down after lunch, but there were just as many people around and his turnover for the day was twice that of the Sunday leading up to Christmas Day last year. “There was certainly a lot more around than there has been on other years,” Mr McDonald said.

Alarm at cheap booze in sachets

By LynLey BiLBy Sachets of alcohol designed to be slipped discreetly into purses and pockets are being sold in liquor stores, alarming police and alcohol-watch groups.

Branded as “Cheeky” and “Sneaky”, the shots are easily concealed, palm-sized alcopops promoted as drinks to carry all the time.

Already banned by some retailers in Britain, they are the cheapest single drink on sale, at just $2.

Each Cheeky plastic pouch contains 25ml of flavoured liquor with a 20 per cent alcohol content and claims to pack

“more punch than your average RTD [ready-to-drink]”.

A rival Sneaky shot contains 21 per cent alcohol.

The Cheeky website emphasises the convenience of concealing the condom-like sachets in wallets and pockets and teases about hiding them in comfortable crevasses.

A social media campaign also pushes an “anytime, anywhere” message and says the shot may come in handy “while fishing at sea or a night out on the town”.

Cheeky part-owner Lewis Gyde said the product was a new way to carry portion-controlled shots of alcohol.

“It means, if you are going to the beach or on a fishing trip, rather than carrying around a six-pack, you can take one small can of Coke and a couple of sachets to drink.”

The sachets were intended to be diluted with mixers, he said.

Police alcohol harm prevention manager Inspector Ben Offner said he was “dismayed, to be honest. We’re exploring our options on how we can influence their availability”.

He said it was disturbing the product was clearly directed at young people and encouraging them to circumvent the law.

John Tamihere says he would happily ask his daughter the questions he controversially put to a woman named Amy at the height of the Roast Busters saga. On November 11, six days after Amy’s call to RadioLive, after public condemnation and advertising withdrawals, Tamihere and co-host Willie Jackson were pulled off air for the rest of the year. On air, Tamihere had asked Amy, among other things, how old she was when she first had sex, and whether underage girls who had sex with “Roast Busters” members did so consensually.

A group of rocketry students will have to wait to know whether they have broken a New Zealand record with their latest launch. The team from the University of Canterbury are yet to find the small supersonic rocket they launched from Kaitorete Spit on Banks Peninsula about 6pm yesterday. They hope to break the New Zealand altitude record for the specific class of motor the rocket uses, which stands at 1117 metres.

Big boy’s toy from Santa

By Russell Blackstock Luxury cars with eye-watering price tags are on Christmas shopping lists for New Zealand’s uber-rich.

Well-heeled drivers have splashed out $1.5 million each for three “hypercars” at New Zealand’s first McLaren dealership since it opened this month.

Auckland businessman Grant Baker this week went one better - ordering a top-of-the-range Ferrari costing $2.2m.

Baker - director of investment firm Business Bakery and a former co-owner of 42 Below with Geoff Ross - won’t see his black LaFerrari model until next Christmas.

“Only 500 are being made and you have to be invited to buy one,” he said. “It is a lot of money, but it will be worth even more straight after I get it - not that I’m buying it to sell. I have owned a few Ferraris but this is my dream car.”

Luke Neuberger from McLaren’s Grey Lynn showroom in Auckland revealed the firm, led

by Sir Colin Giltrap, had been swamped with inquiries about high-end vehicles.

the top-end McLaren P1 models had already been sold and would be delivered to big-spending customers within weeks.

Neuberger said several other MP4-12C coupe and spider models - costing between $380,000 and $500,000 - had also been ordered.

“We have been overwhelmed with interest in the cars and McLaren’s New Zealand story,” he said. “This, combined with a competitive price structure, has resulted in several orders, including three sales of the P1 models, which cost around $1.5m each.

“We are already well ahead of what was expected and are very pleased with the response.”

About 3500 luxury McLaren cars are made each year. Countries are allocated limited numbers for sale, but Neuberger declined to say how many of the British-made vehicles will be imported for Kiwis.

Just 375 of the flagship McLaren P1 will roll off the production line. The hypercar has a 903hp hybrid gas-electric engine and is capable of a top speed of 449km/h. It can rocket from 0-100km/h in under three seconds.

NYC: An amazing, crazy place to live

N

ew York City is constantly throwing up surprises for Simon Martin and wife Alex.

Simon, who grew up in Ashburton, has been living in the city fondly known as the Big Apple in America, since earlier this year. Not surprisingly, he’s found that the town he grew up in and the city he now calls home, could not be any more different if they tried.

Simon and Alex have had amazing experiences, from simply spending time in Central Park and going to the US Open tennis, to watching the Red Sox beat the Yankees at Yankee Stadium, and seeing the Phantom of the Opera on Broadway.

“The best part of New York however is just being part of the city itself, which consistently throws up surprises in different parts of the city, and there is always something interesting going on no matter where or when you head out for a walk,” Simon said.

After finishing at Ashburton College Simon headed to Otago University and studied law and politics. It was there, at Carrington Hall, that he met his wife to be – Alex.

Simon and Alex lived in Wellington for six years, after completing their studies. Simon was working as a senior solicitor, specialising in employment law for Quigg Partners – a boutique corporate employment law firm.

Alex was working as the HR and travel manager at the Australian High Commission in Wellington when an opportunity in the Australian ConsulateGeneral in New York came up.

She applied for the HR manager position for the Consulate-General and the (connected) Permanent Mission to the United Nations.

“Within six weeks of her applying for the position we had packed up our house in Wellington and were on the way to the Big Apple,” Simon said.

Due to visa and legal restrictions, Simon knew that it would be pretty much impossible for him to practise law there.

“But it was too great an opportunity for Alex and an exciting adventure for us both to not take it up,” he said.

“Accommodation is extremely expensive in Manhattan for the type of housing you get. It is of course almost exclusively apartment style, with one-bedroom places being the most common.

“In-house laundry facilities are rare – we are lucky to have a laundromat just around the corner. You always get a pretty interesting cross section of society doing their laundry on the weekends and the conversations among locals folding their washing can be highly entertaining.”

because the Mission for the UN needed a protocol and liaison officer. Simon then became the office co-ordinator for the Mission.

Being the protocol and liaison officer meant that he was responsible for all accreditation of Australian diplomats and visitors to the United Nations, as well as the status of each diplomat’s visa and work authorisation.

“I’m essentially required to make sure that the mission keeps ticking over in an administrative sense while the diplomats do the important policy work. This includes managing

drivers, assisting with recruitment and training, regulatory compliance and monitoring workplace health and safety,” Simon said.

The work has given him an insight into how a diplomatic mission operates, as well as exposure to the UN. “A particular highlight was being present in the Security Council when it passed the resolution requiring the destruction of Syria’s chemical weapons stockpiles,” Simon said.

“Having access to the chamber to watch the business of the Security Council has been extremely interesting, especially

during Australia’s presidency of the council in September.”

There have been plenty of highlights, but also a few lowlights, living in New York City.

“The worst experiences I’ve had in New York have mostly related to dealing with some pretty aggressive and “direct” people.

“New Yorkers are famous for telling you what they think and compared to us quiet and reserved Kiwis they can be pretty intimidating sometimes.

“And there was the slightly scary moment when Alex and I were followed and yelled at by a rather upset individual with a

large stick for about four blocks.

He just didn’t like the look of us obviously.”

The couple live on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, just off Broadway and about five minutes’ walk from Central Park.

“I’m not sure if two places could possibly be any more different than New York and Ashburton,” Simon said.

“Living in New York City can test your patience sometimes, with just so many people (around five million) in such a small area. But, the amazing thing about New York is the diversity; not just the diversity of people and cultures, but also a huge diversity of ways to pass your time.

“There is just so much to see and the weekends are often quickly filled with adventures to different parts of Manhattan, such as Chelsea and the Meat Packing District, Soho, and the West Village.”

It’s a totally different style of living to anywhere in New Zealand.

“Most days, the subway is a pretty fantastic way to get around the city and reasonably pain free. We are lucky enough to be in an area that is pretty well serviced with trains coming by every four or so minutes.

“Like most other things in New York, it is always pretty crowded but you do get used to it. The different lines are a little like a labyrinth under the city, but again with time you become better at figuring out where to go and which stations to switch at.”

However, when summer hits, it can go really bad.

“The summer was a struggle especially, with one week in particular being consistently over 35°C and extremely high humidity. As you can imagine, it gets pretty nasty in an underground system that’s filled with so many people and operating trains.

“You do acquire a pretty good ‘subway face’, which is the blank expression you develop when you find yourself about 30cm from another person’s face, or armpit if you happen to be short.”

They’ve done some travelling around America and are planning a trip to Mexico.

The couple plan on returning to New Zealand, possibly late next year. “The chance to live in such an amazing and crazy city, in every sense of the word, was too great to pass up and I think we are better for it.

“It has given us a chance to experience a totally different style of living and be exposed to different cultures. But there is only so long you can live without the open spaces we love in New Zealand, although Central Park does have its charms.”

24 killed in Iraq attack

the evil minority, and pursue them everywhere until Iraq is purged of their wickedness,” he said. An increase in attacks by insurgents in recent months has raised the prospect of a return to the violence that pushed Iraq to the brink of civil war in 2006 and 2007.

According to UN estimates, 659 people were killed in Iraq attacks in November.

Gyrocopter crash A pilot and his passenger were checking fire damaged bushland when their gyrocopter crashed northeast of Melbourne, killing both. The bodies of the 51-yearold pilot from Melbourne, and a second unidentified man, were found in rugged terrain in Victoria’s Kinglake National Park about 7am yesterday. A police plane spotted the wreckage in dense bushland that has regenerated after bushfires. The men failed to return from what was to be a 15-minute flight from the Yarra Valley conference centre on the Melba Highway at Dixons Creek about 7.20pm.

Shooting victim dies A 17-year-old Colorado high school student who was shot in the face by a teenage gunman has died after eight days on life support, a local hospital said. Arapahoe High School student Karl Pierson, 18, shot Claire Davis point blank with a shotgun on December 13, before taking his own life, in a shocking rampage that officials said lasted 80 seconds. Officials said Pierson had been kicked-off the school’s debate team and apparently bore a grudge toward the team’s coach.

Chinese billionaire in crash A Chinese billionaire and a French vintner are missing, believed killed after their helicopter crashed into a river in southwest France.

There’s little hope of finding alive Lam Kok, a 46-yearold Chinese tea-and-property tycoon, his interpreter and winemaker James Gregoire after police early on Saturday recovered the body of Lam’s 12-year-old son from the back of the wrecked helicopter lying in seven metres of water in the Dordogne river.

The four had boarded the helicopter piloted by Gregoire on Friday to make a celebratory tour of a Bordeaux chateau and wine-growing estate that Lam had just bought from the Frenchman.

Lam’s wife had pulled out of the flight at the last minute, saying she was “scared of helicopters,” said an AFP photographer who witnessed its take-off.

The doomed flight took place after a lavish event marking Lam’s multi-million-euro purchase of the 65-hectare wine estate, Chateau de la Riviere.

After searches involving police divers and sniffer dogs, authorities were today to use a sonar to try and find the missing bodies.

Police reinforcements were also to add to the more than 100 officers already carrying out the search, a gendarme commander said.

Mangled parts of the chopper’s fuselage and a camera were retrieved from the crash site, the AFP photographer saw.

But police said strong currents were complicating the search for the three missing.

Parcels contaminated A man was killed and seven others injured in China after receiving parcels that had become contaminated with toxic chemicals, local media has reported. The unnamed man, from China’s eastern Shandong province, died after taking delivery of a box of shoes in late November which were tainted with methyl fluoroacetate, a highly toxic chemical, the Xinhua news agency said yesterday, citing the local post bureau. Body of UK doctor returned The body of a British doctor who died in Syrian custody has been handed over to his family and British officials in Lebanon as relatives said the regime killed him.

Human Rights Watch also piled the pressure on Syrian authorities yesterday, accusing the government of “wreaking disaster” in deadly air raids on second city Aleppo.

On the diplomatic front, peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi held talks with the foreign minister of Syria’s ally Iran, after negotiators failed to agree on a role for Tehran in a peace conference.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said Doctor Abbas Khan’s body was brought out of Syr-

ia and given to his family and British officials in Beirut.

“The British embassy in Lebanon is expected to rapidly fly the body to London,” a statement said.

Khan’s mother, Fatima, was at a Beirut hospital morgue to receive his remains and accused Syrian authorities of killing him.

Britain also holds Damascus responsible for the death of the 32-year-old orthopaedic surgeon. Khan, a volunteer with Human Aid UK, had travelled to Aleppo last year to help civilians when the regime arrested him.

Syria said this week that Khan had been found “hanging” in his cell, where he was being held for “unauthorised

activities,” and that he had committed suicide.

But his mother told the BBC that Syrian security authorities had killed him.

“He was so good to humanity. How could they kill a humanitarian aid worker? He did not treat any terrorists, he treated only women and children, he told me.”

While he was in detention, Syrian television had described Khan as a “terrorist,” the term it uses to brand its opponents.

Syria’s 33-month war has killed an estimated 126,000 people, and Human Rights Watch says air force bombing raids on Aleppo have left hundreds more dead in the past month.

A Mozambican Airlines captain had the “clear intention” to crash a plane that went down in Namibia killing 33 last month, according to a preliminary investigation.

Flight recorders showed flight TM470 went down on November 29 while Captain Herminio dos Santos Fernandes manipulated the Embraer 190’s autopilot in a way which “denotes a clear intention” to bring the plane down, said Mozambican Civil Aviation Institute (IACM) head Joao Abreu.

The plane went down in torrential rains in the swamps of Namibia’s Bwabwata National Park on November 29, killing its six crew and 27 passengers.

Artificial heart implant A 75-year-old man who last week became the first person to receive an artificial heart developed by French biomedical firm Carmat was progressing well, doctors say. The patient was “progressing and recuperating”, said surgeon Christian Latremouille, who was among the 16-strong team of doctors who performed the operation at the Georges Pompidou Hospital in Paris. Artificial hearts have already been in use for many years as a temporary fix for patients with chronic heart problems. - AFP

Time to reflect Coen Lammers EDITOR

W

hen you read this, my family has just started their Christmas holiday.

As the year comes to an end we instinctively look ahead at the coming year and at times forget to reflect on the 12 months behind us.

The year 2013 has definitely been an eventful one for Mid Canterbury with plenty to celebrate, but just as many moments we’d rather forget.

The first memory, or should I say memories, that come to mind are the incredible number of extreme weather events.

It started with a bang when a twister ripped through Mayfield and continued with floods, devastating droughts, the big snow of June 20, until the surreal storm of September 10 literally blew the district away.

The damage to property ran in the millions and sadly, subsequent storms in October and last week added more pain for rural folk and townies.

There was also a lot of huffing and puffing before year’s mayoral election, but no-one could blow over incumbent Angus McKay. While the local elections have become a low-key affair and the campaign failed to capture the wider public, local politics continue to stir the emotions.

The attempt by the new council to overturn the decision on the second bridge failed but triggered an extraordinary reaction.

Sport again provided some of the brightest moments in the year as local athletes performed with merit around the country and the world. Mid Canterbury rugby had a stellar year, winning the Heartland Trophy, Methven man Braden Currie celebrated a Coast to Coast win, while Ricky May rewrote history, winning a seventh New Zealand Trotting Cup. Aside from all the big news stories, my lasting memories of 2013 are from the numerous public events that have demonstrated the wonderful community spirit and the changing multi-ethnic face of the district, which was confirmed in this year’s census.

So wherever you were born, and whatever your Christmas traditions are, I wish you all a wonderful festive season and a terrific 2014.

id PM Key really “drop the ball” and/ or “miss the bus”- as the late Neville Chamberlain once claimed Adolf Hitler to have done - over his choice of personnel to accompany him to South Africa for Nelson Mandela’s funeral?

His “failure” to invite antiapartheid activists John Minto and Trevor Richards to accompany him to the Republic flared quickly into the controversy of the hour. Now, with the Great Man safely returned to the land of his ancestors and the mourners equally safely repatriated to their countries of origin, a less febrile - albeit now purely academic - consideration of the issue can be thoughtfully debated.

From the start, it seems to have been a question of whether the New Zealand delegation should have comprised the Prime Minister, current leaders and two former holders of High Office, all in a purely national representative role or should there have been a distinctly “political” element including some for whom it was claimed had greatly assisted Mr Mandela’s long fight for racial equality in South Africa leading finally and gloriously to his becoming the first black president of the “Rainbow Republic.”

In that regard, the happenings at the Waikato/Springbok rugby match at Rugby Park, Hamilton in 1981 loom large.

That the vehemence of the protesters led to the abandonment of the game is seen in some quarters as a “watershed” in the battle to end apartheid and as such marks “the beginning of the end” of that pernicious doctrine.

Arrogant or realistic? However we assess the subsequent official demise of racial division in South Africa, it has to be said that despite the Herculean achievements of “Madiba”, as he was also known, that division remains wide in many parts of South Africa. The vi-

Len Brown. Elsewhere, it has not been a good week for Mayor Len Brown of “Super City” Auckland; “Super City” perhaps but not “Super Mayor”.

His off course shenanigans and their financial ramifications, that a $100,000 investigation have now laid bare - if you’ll pardon the expression - have led inevitably to strident calls for his resignation.

He cannot be sacked but the put-upon taxpayers of our largest city don’t fancy having

a laughing stock mayor for the next three years the butt of every kind of nod, nod, wink, wink and sly innuendo . . . and we can’t really blame them.

After all, our comparable officials are models of probity and decorum.

So ends 2013 with, as ever, controversy and contention and, I’m glad to say, the promise of much more to come in 2014!

With an election in the offing, we political pundits are more or less drooling at the prospect.

Before all that, Christmas and New Year. I wish you all very well for both.

QUICK MEAL

Chicken and mushroom casserole l½ Tbsp sesame oil 4 chicken thigh cutlets 1 tbsp finely chopped ginger 150g mushrooms, sliced or whole 3 tbsp soy sauce 3 tbsp Select oyster sauce 1 cup rice Steamed Asian greens eg pak choy, to serve 3 tbsp soy sauce ■ Heat the oil in a medium, nonstick frying pan. Remove skin from the chicken and brown on both sides ■ Add the ginger and sauté for 30 seconds. Add the mushrooms, soy sauce, oyster sauce, 2 cups water and rice.

■ Slowly bring to the boil then reduce the heat, cover and simmer for about 30 minutes or until the chicken is cooked through and the water has been absorbed.

■ Serve with steamed greens.

A warm welcome, ancient sites Amir Bibay headed to Jordan recently to get his Middle Eastern fix of ancient sites and specialty foods – he was not disappointed.

I

f you are keen on getting your Middle Eastern fix of ancient sites, sun, mint tea, and falafel, the Arab Spring may have challenged your travel plans. Although tourists have stayed largely safe in the Arab world in the past several years, the turmoil in Egypt, war in Syria and spill-over in Lebanon have kept some visitors away.

But fear not. Jordan is a world removed from the instability that has engulfed the region and Jordanians warmly welcome tourists year-round.

On a recent visit, my first to Jordan, I found myself falling in love with its tranquility and hospitality.

Jordan’s sites are spread out, but there’s a good road and transportation system, and not an overwhelming number of things to see. It’s easy to meet and talk with locals, many of whom speak English.

The serene capital, Amman, was originally built on seven hills on the ruins of ancient Philadelphia. The modern-day city has developed over a hundred years into a hip town full of young people and a regional hub for tech start-ups.

The capital’s most prominent sight is a Roman amphitheatre that’s right in the middle of Amman. On the grounds of the amphitheatre, do not miss the Folklore and Popular Traditions Museum where you can see displays of traditional dress from Jordan and Palestine and learn more about the cuisine

and ways of life of the nomadic Bedouins.

The Citadel on Amman’s highest hill is impressive, home to a Roman temple, Islamic palace, cistern and Byzantine church. From its vista you can get a full appreciation of the massive 2000-year-old amphitheatre a stone’s throw away.

What the capital lacks in ancient sights, it makes up for in food. In a short span of several days, and accompanied by local friends, I was able to feast on the country’s famed kebabs and mezze — small dishes — and even had pretty good sushi.

Whatever you do, do not miss a late-night meat fix from Reem on the 2nd Circle (roundabouts in old Amman are numbered).

Find the line of hungry Jordanians waiting outside this takeout shack for sandwiches ($1), and you’re in good hands.

The meat is marinated, grilled and topped with onions, tahini, tomatoes and salad for an unforgettable pita sandwich. The wait is long but worth it.

Jafra, also in the old city, combines a radical intellectual ambiance with a robust menu of traditional favourites. Photos of pro-Palestinian activist Edward Said, Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwich and Western left-wing celebrities adorn the walls, but the crowd is split between decidedly hip young Ammanis and middle-class families. Sit on the terrace to soak up the street atmosphere below you.

Merry Christmas

Outside Amman your travels could take you to ancient castles and Christian and Judaic sites or to wild natural reserves. But all paths will lead to Petra, an ancient city built in rose-red rock that remained largely undiscovered till the 19th century.

Petra was built by the Nabataeans, Arabs who controlled the region’s trade routes over 2000 years ago. The structures they left behind are so fascinating they were voted as one of the new Seven Wonders of the World in a global poll six years ago. This led to more visitors, so early morning is the best time to beat the crowds. To get to Petra, you can take a bus from Amman (three hours) or hire a car and a driver for about $120 a day.

Entering from the official gate, you pass through a tourist market in a street that descends into a wide valley where Petra’s architectural gems begin.

Walking through the winding Siq, a gorge formed when land movement split the massive rock mass, you come to appreciate the site’s enormity. You may even gasp out loud when you first glimpse the majestic “Treasury” building through the narrow gorge.

The Treasury is actually a burial building and not, as myth had it, a place where treasures were hidden. The intricate facade of the building is Petra’s most famous image, made even more famous by appearing in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

Continue along a wide and sunny route past the Theatre, High Place of Sacrifice, Royal Tombs and other structures.

The site’s undiscovered gem, at its highest point, is the Monastery, a first century BC building. There’s good reason few people make it there: It’s at the end of a 45-minute climb of 800 rocky steps. But it’s worth it.

Beyond the Monastery at that elevation is a spectacular view of the entire city of Petra and the colourful valley, Wadi Araba.

I ventured also to Jordan’s well-preserved Judeo-Christian sites, including Mount Nebo,

where Moses saw the promised land. A map there shows the distance to towns in Israel and the Palestinian Territories; Jerusalem is less than 48 kilometres away.

Close to Mount Nebo is the historically Christian town of Madaba, whose St. George’s Church houses an unusual floor map of the Middle East, done in colorful mosaics almost 1500 years ago. Another unique mosaic is the large and almostintact floor piece at the Church of Saint Lot and Saint Procopius in the nearby town of Khirbet al-Mukhayyat.

These mosaics were discovered in a family’s house when a cooking fire ruined the plaster hiding the original floor. The keeper of the church and son of that family holds the keys.

He’ll let you in and proudly explain that the house belonged to his Muslim family before they donated it to the government, which in turn made it into a church. He earns very little as the guardian of the site, according to my guide, and

appreciates a tip of a dinar.

Beyond all this, there’s the Dead Sea, along with more ancient Roman sites, Islamic castles and natural wonders — all beautiful and worth visiting.

But if you are tempted to simply lounge about with a glass of Jordanian shiraz and a water pipes, staring at the stars in Amman’s clear skies, go ahead. Enjoy it.

Anxious eyes go skyward

Deon makes the big time Ashburton College cricketer Deon Biggs has been selected into the Canterbury under 17s. After representing Mid Canterbury at the Canterbury regional under 17 tournament he was selected into one of the zonal teams for the tri-series where he was the highest wicket taker to gain selection to the Canterbury under 17s that will play in the National under 17 tournament in Napier on January 12-22. Biggs will be amongst familiar company with Mid Canterbury ex-pats Ryan Bell (captain) and James Southby also selected. Seven under 15 Mid Canterbury boys were also selected into a Southern Districts team to play against Metro and Canterbury Country teams in early January.

Liverpool goes top Liverpool took over at the top of the Premier League table yesterday, while Manchester City climbed to second place and Manchester United continued their revival. With Arsenal and Chelsea facing off at the Emirates Stadium overnight, Liverpool took advantage with a 3-1 win over Cardiff City that took them a point above Arsene Wenger’s side. Manchester City followed their lead by winning 4-2 at Fulham to move above Arsenal on goal difference. United, meanwhile, beat West Ham United 3-1 at Old Trafford to record a fourth consecutive victory in all competitions.

Sonny Bill to Counties?

The Blues have been dealt a significant blow even before the season has begun - experienced lock Culum Retallick has been ruled out of action for six months - while Sonny Bill Williams is said to be joining Counties. Williams is thought to be joining Counties as part of their ITM Cup squad next year, though it is not clear how much he will actually play for them. The connection with the Tana Umaga-coached team may also help Williams play sevens for Counties as part of his goal to make the 2016 Olympics with the national sevens team.

Wizards down Celtics Trevor Ariza scored 27 points to help the Washington Wizards to a thrilling comeback win over the Boston Celtics yesterday. The Wizards won 106-99 but did not lead until the final three minutes, but Washington ended the game with a 22-7 spurt to dump the host Celtics, who lead the Atlantic division despite a 12-16 record. Boston had defeated Washington in their past seven meetings, but could not stretch the streak as John Wall produced 20 points, nine assists and six steals for the Wizards. In New York, Zach Randolph scored 25 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to power Memphis over the Knicks 95-87.- AFP

They’ve finally done it.

After weeks of despair and frustration, the Wellington Phoenix have registered their first win of the A-League season with a 1-0 defeat of Sydney FC at Westpac Stadium last night.

After six losses and four draws heading in to the game, Ernie Merrick’s side will have been given some much-needed confidence with the result.

The win was tinged with some disappointment though as striker Paul Ifill was carted off in the second half with what looked like a serious leg injury.

Wellington welcomed back midfielder Carlos Hernandez for the game after the Costa Rican international missed Thursday’s 1-0 loss to the Central Coast Mariners with a quadriceps injury. Hernandez has also

been the subject of recent speculation surrounding how happy he is at the club as he waits on his family to arrive from Costa Rica, but those concerns didn’t appear to be a factor as he suited up yesterday.

Coach Ernie Merrick also made a tough call by dropping the out-of-form Jeremy Brockie for the veteran Ifill after the latter had displayed good energy from the bench in recent weeks.

After enjoying a collection of decent chances during the first half an hour, the Phoenix finally broke the shackles via Stein Huysegems in the 33rd minute.

The former Belgian international had spurned a couple of earlier opportunities but didn’t need any further invitations as he linked nicely with Hernandez to round Sydney goalkeeper Vedran Janjetovic to collect his third goal of the season.

Swann adds to England woes England spinner Graeme Swann has announced his retirement from international cricket with immediate effect, saying it would be selfish for him to keep playing.

Swann, 34, said it was the right time to step aside and let England bring in some new blood with the Ashes gone after Australia made it 3-0 in Perth last week.

“Well, it’s quite simple. When I came out on this trip I half expected it to be my last tour for England,” said in Melbourne yesterday.

“I was desperately hoping to win the Ashes out here again, like we did in 201011 but with the Ashes gone now in those three Test matches ... I think to selfishly play just to experience another Boxing Day Test match, a Sydney Test match, would be wrong.

“It would be wrong for the team, it would be wrong for me.”

The off-spinner has been under pressure to keep his place in the England team after taking just seven wickets at an average of 80 in three Ashes Tests.

Swann exits the international arena having played 60 Tests since making his debut in 2008, taking 255 wickets at 29.96.

“With two games to go in Australia and then a fiercely competitive summer against Sri Lanka and India, I feel that it is a great time for someone else to strap themselves in and hopefully enjoy the ride as much as I have,” Swann said. “I don’t regret a single day of my career. Every high has been celebrated with verve and vigor and every low painfully accepted as a chance to learn and improve.”

England team director Andy Flower said Swann made an “outstanding contribution” to the team.

“His commitment, competitive spirit and sense of humour have been recognised and admired by team-mates and supporters alike and he has played a big part in England’s success over the last five years,” Flower said. “The dressing room will be a very different place without Graeme’s unique personality.” - AAP

Sport Rain the winner on the day

Players waiting on the weather to clear at the Lauriston Oval, but their wait was in vain as rain washed out the start of the second round in Mid Canterbury Senior cricket’s Pritchard Shield on Saturday. Top-of-the table Lauriston were due to host Methven while in the Ashburton Domain Allenton and Coldstream were supposed to clash next door to the Tech derby. Senior cricket resumes on January 11 with the seventh of 10 rounds which sees the side on top at the end of the round robin claim the shield, currently held by the Tech Sharks.

Black Caps claim rare series win

BY ANDREW ALDERSON Cricket has a way of creating appropriate quirks. Ross Taylor deserved to be at the wicket as Hamish Rutherford drove to the long off boundary to seal the victory in the third test against the West Indies at 1.45pm yesterday.

New Zealand won by eight wickets to take their first threetest series in eight seasons.

Rutherford finished 48 not

out and Taylor was unbeaten on two. Taylor finished on 866 runs for the calendar year at an average of 72.17, five runs short of equalling John R Reid’s record 871 runs across 24 innings in 1965.

He finished with 495 runs for the series, second only to Andrew Jones’ 513 in a three-test series against Sri Lanka in 1991.

Taylor, Trent Boult and Tim Southee will get deserved plaudits for their pivotal roles in the

series, but also spare a thought for Kane Williamson.

The No.3 was bowled by Veerasammy Permaul slogging to the legside after anchoring the final innings; six runs short of New Zealand’s required total.

Since a productive county period with Yorkshire, Williamson has had six innings for New Zealand against Bangladesh and the West Indies. The results: 114, 74, 62, 45, 58 and 56 - 409 runs at an average of 81.80.

Williamson anchored the hosts’ chase. He was supported

by Rutherford who, while he didn’t look as comfortable, got valuable time at the crease.

New Zealand were 89 for one off 32 overs at lunch before polishing off the 33 required runs 8.4 overs after the break.

Some may argue the New Zealanders could have forced the pace earlier, especially during a patient period of 34 balls between the 13th and 18th

overs where they did not score.

However, there was no need.

It’s not Twenty20.

Better to have a steady chase than a frenetic collapse - the 1993 shredding of the hosts for 93 chasing 127 to win against Pakistan’s Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis is an example.

Fortunately for New Zealand the visitors don’t possess anyone of that calibre in their attack.
